The demand for organic fruits and vegetables (F&V) is growing worldwide, creating market opportunities for developing countries as major suppliers. However, most export-oriented developing countries such as Chile have an undeveloped domestic market for organic products. This article identifies the segments of potential consumers of organic F&V in Central Chile using an exploratory CHAID model. A questionnaire was administered by surveying a random sample of 425 F&V consumers in central Chile. The results of the CHAID model suggest two segments of potential consumers of organic F&V. Both groups show awareness of the concept of organic food. Additionally, the first segment perceives organic agriculture to have ethical benefits to the society and considers organic F&V as healthy and nutritious; this group has a probability of over 80% to consume organic F&V. The second segment shows less awareness of the ethical benefits to society and its probability of consuming organic F&V depends on family income level. We discuss major implications for further studies on organic consumers. La demanda por frutas y verduras (F&V) orgánicas está creciendo alrededor del mundo, creando oportunidades de mercado para los países en desarrollo como principales proveedores. Sin embargo, la mayoría de los países en vías de desarrollo orientados a la exportación, tales como Chile, tienen un mercado interno no desarrollado para los productos orgánicos. Este artículo identifica los segmentos de potenciales consumidores de frutas y verduras orgánicas en el centro de Chile, utilizando un modelo CHAID exploratorio. Se aplicó un cuestionario a una muestra aleatoria de 425 compradores de frutas y verduras. Los resultados del modelo CHAID sugieren dos segmentos de potenciales consumidores de frutas y verduras orgánicas. Ambos grupos demuestran conocimiento del concepto de alimento orgánico. Adicionalmente, el primer segmento percibe que la agricultura orgánica entrega beneficios éticos a la sociedad y considera que F&V orgánicas son saludables y nutritivos; este grupo tiene una probabilidad de más de 80% de consumir F&V orgánicas. El segundo segmento demuestra menos conciencia de los beneficios éticos a la sociedad y su probabilidad de consumir F&V orgánicas, depende del nivel de ingreso familiar. Cereal grain yields have increased worldwide during the 20th century as a consequence of plant breeding, improved cultural practices and intensive use of inputs. However, there is evidence that there are differences in yield pattern evolution across countries and cereals. The purpose of this study was to compare trends in the yields of the most commonly produced cereals in Chile, namely wheat, oat, barley, maize and rice, to identify similarities in trends across crops and to estimate long-term growth rates in the yields and their changes over time. Data for wheat, barley, oat, rice and maize yields between 1929 and 2009 were obtained from the Chilean Oficina de Estudios y Políticas Agrarias (ODEPA). A first-order autoregressive (AR1) model with trend was applied to a time series analysis of yield data to estimate the relative rates of yield increase and short-run adjustments to yield progress. There was a break in the time series for wheat, barley and oat in approximately 1980. Following this break, the yields exhibited notable increases, with these three cereals reaching similar yields (4.4-4.7 ton ha-1 in the last decade). The long-term relative rate of yield was approximately 0.6-1% before the break (approximately 1980) and slightly less after the break. Rice yields decreased from the thirties to the sixties and have increased since then. The maize yield was very low before the sixties (< 2 t ha-1) but has since increased steadily, reaching an average of 10.8 t ha-1 in the last decade. Economic and agronomic changes that have taken place in the country explain the break observed in the cereal yield trends. La producción de cereales de grano ha aumentado en todo el mundo durante el siglo 20, como consecuencia del mejoramiento genético de plantas, mejores prácticas de manejo y el uso intensivo de insumos. Sin embargo, hay evidencia de que existen diferencias en la evolución de los rendimientos entre países y especies de cereales. El objetivo de este artículo fue comparar las tendencias en los rendimientos de los cereales más importantes en Chile, es decir, trigo, avena, cebada, maíz y arroz,identificar las similitudes en las tendencias de los distintos cultivos y estimar las tasas de crecimiento de largo plazo de los rendimientos y los cambios en tiempo. Los datos correspondientes a trigo, cebada, avena, arroz y maíz entre 1929 y 2009 se obtuvieron de la Oficina Chilena de Estudios y Políticas Agrarias (ODEPA). El modelo de autorregresión de primer orden (AR1) fue utilizado para las series temporales de rendimiento de grano por hectárea, con el fin de estimar las tasas relativas de incremento de la producción y los ajustes de corto plazo en el progreso del rendimiento. Se encontró un quiebre en las series temporales para el trigo, la cebada y la avena en torno a 1980. Después de esto, los rendimientos mostraron fuertes incrementos, alcanzando los tres cereales rendimientos similares (4.4-4.7 t ha-1 en la última década). La tasa relativa a largo plazo de rendimiento fue de aproximadamente 0.6-1%% antes del quiebre (alrededor de 1980) y luego disminuyó ligeramente. La producción de arroz disminuyó de los años treinta a los años sesenta y luego se incrementó hasta el presente. En el maíz, el rendimiento fue muy bajo antes de los años sesenta (< 2 t ha-1), pero aumentó en forma constante hasta el presente, alcanzando un promedio de 10,8 t ha-1 en la última década. Los cambios económicos que se producen en el país pueden explicar los quiebres que se observan en las tendencias de los cereales.

El comercio internacional de fruta fresca está regulado por distintos estándares y normativas, algunos de carácter obligatorio fiscalizados por entidades públicas, y otros de carácter voluntario desarrollados por cadenas de distribución de alimento mundial, como GlobalGap. En Chile, desde el año 2000 existen iniciativas de apoyo a la certificación de estándares privados de Buenas Prácticas Agrícolas (BPA) para facilitar el acceso a mercados más exigentes y competitivos. Este estudio de casos busca estimar costos de cumplimiento de BPA y su variabilidad, identificar beneficios y desventajas de la certificación. Se encuestaron 26 productores exportadores de fruta fresca de la zona central de Chile (Región de O'Higgins y del Maule), 12 certificados con estándares privados de BPA y 14 no certificados, pero que cumplen con el DS No 594 relacionado con condiciones sanitarias y ambientales básicas en los lugares de trabajo. A partir de los resultados, se determina que el costo de cumplimiento de BPA tiende a ser mayor en productor no certificado ($ 308.095) que en certificado ($166.105); la diferencia está marcada por el costo de implementación e influenciada por el tamaño predial. La principal ventaja al adoptar protocolos privados de BPA es acceder a más y mejores mercados (> 78%), pero además entregan seguridad a trabajadores agrícolas y consumidores finales. Los productores consideran como principal desventaja el incremento en los costos de producción (58,3% certificado y 42,9% no certificado). International commerce of fresh fruit is regulated by different standards and norms, some of which are obligatory and controlled by public entities and others which are voluntary, developed by global food distribution chains such as GlobalGap. In Chile, since the year 2000 there have been initiatives to support the certification of private GAP standards to facilitate access to the most competitive and demanding markets. This case study estimates the costs of GAP compliance and their variability, and identifies the benefits and disadvantages of certification. Twenty six fresh fruit exporters from the central zone of Chile (O'Higgins and Maule Regions) were interviewed, 12 certified by private GAP standards and 14 not certified but who comply with Chilean sanitary decree DS N° 594, related to the basic safety and environmental standards in the workplace. The results show that the cost of GAP compliance tends to be greater for non-certified producers ($ 308,095 Chilean pesos) than for certified producers ($ 166,105); the difference is produced by the implementation cost, and influenced by the size of the orchard. The main advantage to adopting private GAP protocols is the access to more and better markets (> 78%); however they also provide security for agricultural workers and final consumers. Producers consider the main disadvantage to be the increase in production costs (58.3% certified and 42.9% not certified).

This study aims to weigh the influence of observable traits on live cattle prices, i.e., the percent impact on the final price of various physical characteristics. These characteristics are those that commonly are published in auction catalogues, as is the case of: average lot weight, lot size, age, breed and corporal condition. In addition, the influence of seasonality and business cycles were also explored. Using the data collected from the records of El Tattersall S.A., a hedonic price function was fitted. The results showed that the most influential variables with respect to the price of beef cattle, in decreasing order, are as follows: 'condition', 'breed', 'quarter of sale' and 'year', which are followed far behind by 'lot size' and 'average weight'. The market pays a premium for Red Friesians, Crossbreds and Herefords and punishes the price of Holstein Friesians. Additionally, higher prices are paid in the last two quarters of the year than in the first two, and the third quarter is preferable to the fourth. Finally, the average lot weight and lot size are variables that have a positive, but small, influence on the price of cattle. El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar la influencia sobre el precio de características observables en el ganado en pié. Estas características son aquellas que normalmente se publican en los catálogos de los remates, como son: peso promedio del lote, tamaño del lote, edad, raza y condición corporal. También se evaluó la influencia de la estacionalidad y del ciclo ganadero, en el precio. Usando datos de El Tattersall S.A se ajustó una función hedónica de precios. Los resultados mostraron que las variables que más influyen en el precio son, en orden decreciente: 'condición corporal', 'raza', 'trimestre en que se hace la venta' y 'año'; en mucho menor escala, también influyen 'tamaño del lote' y 'peso promedio del lote'. El mercado paga una prima por Overos Colorados, híbridos y Hereford y también castiga el precio del ganado Holstein Friesian. Los precios son más altos en últimos dos trimestres del año respecto de los dos primeros, y el Tercer Trimestre paga mejores precios que el Cuarto. El peso promedio y el tamaño del lote tienen muy poca influencia sobre el precio.

Increasing awareness of food safety issues has brought a boost in sanitary and phytosanitary regulations and standards. Although is likely that these regulations have increased health and welfare in the countries that impose them, they may also have an important effect in exporting countries, affecting especially small producers in developing countries. Other papers have found that individual quantitative measures of regulatory stringency have an impact on trade, but none has looked into broader SPS regulation stringency indicators. Through a survey that asked Chilean fresh fruit exporters to evaluate the stringency for 16 countries and four fresh fruits, we create and index that incorporates several aspects of SPS regulation. Our estimations suggest that, on average, quality standards and packaging and labeling issues are considered the most stringent. We also estimate a gravity model and find that SPS regulatory stringency, measured by this broad index, has negative and significant effect on traded volume

Risk in the agricultural sector has multiple dimensions or factors and prioritization of these can support decision making. On the other hand, knowing the importance of these risk factors for distinct agricultural activities and how they vary according to geographic zone constitutes relevant information for agricultural development. The objective of this study was to prioritize risk factors that are highly relevant for farmers in Central South Chile. The multi-criteria Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) methodology was used to define a decision structure with four risk factors or criteria: climate, price and direct cost variability, human factor, and commercialization. In general, results obtained showed that there are no important imbalances in the weightings of different risk factors. Price and cost variability was the most important factor (0.30) whereas climate was the least important (0.20). It also confirmed that there are spatial differences in the weightings obtained for the distinct risk factors which determine distinct risk levels for the respective agricultural activities according to geographic region. El riesgo en el sector agrícola tiene múltiples dimensiones o factores y la priorización de éstas puede apoyar la toma de decisiones. Por otra parte, resulta relevante conocer la importancia que tienen estos factores de riesgo para distintos rubros agrícolas y como varían según zona geográfica, pues es información valiosa para el diseño de políticas de desarrollo agrícola. El objetivo de este estudio fue priorizar factores de riesgo que son altamente relevantes para los agricultores del centro sur de Chile. Se utilizó la metodología multicriterio Proceso Analítico Jerárquico (AHP) para definir la estructura de decisión con cuatro factores de riesgo o criterios: clima, variabilidad de precios y costos, factor humano y comercialización. En general, los resultados obtenidos muestran que no existen importantes desequilibrios en las ponderaciones para diferentes factores de riesgo. La variabilidad de precios y costos fue el factor de mayor importancia (0,30) mientras que el clima fue el menos importante (0,20). También se confirmó que existen diferencias espaciales en las ponderaciones obtenidas para los distintos factores de riesgo, lo cual determina distintos niveles de riesgo para los respectivos rubros agrícolas según la región geográfica.

This research investigates the spatial market integration of the Chilean wheat market in relation with its most representative international markets by using a vector error correction model (VECM) and how a price support policy, as a price band, affect it. The international market was characterized by two relevant wheat prices: PAN from Argentina and Hard Red Winter from the United States. The spatial market integration level, expressed in the error correction term (ECT), allowed concluding that there is a high integration degree among these markets with a variable influence of the price band mechanism mainly related with its estimation methodology. Moreover, this paper showed that Chile can be seen as price taker as long as the speed of its adjustment to international shocks, being these reactions faster than in the United States and Argentina. Finally, the results validated the "Law of the One Price", which assumes price equalization across all local markets in the long run. peerReviewed
