Abstract

Due to fascinating physical properties powered by remarkable progress in chemical vapor deposition of high-quality epilayers, diamond thin films attract great attention for fabrication of nitrogen-vacancy-based solid-state spin systems capable of operating in ambient conditions. To date, diamond heteroepitaxy via bias-enhanced nucleation is an unavoidable method for reliable wafer-scale film manufacturing. In this work, we analyze the coalescence phenomena in nitrogen doped, heteroepitaxial diamond epilayers, with a particular focus on their specific role in the annihilation of macroscopic crystal irregularities such as grain boundaries, non-oriented grains, and twinned segments. Here, we also report on the growth mechanism for the "primary" crystal orientation along with a predominant formation of two different types of boundaries highlighting the {011}-type as a main source of the crystal lattice irregularities. Abstract

For the wafer-scale fabrication of diamond devices, the growth of diamond substrates by heteroepitaxial chemical vapor deposition is the most promising option currently available. However, the transfer of growth and also structuring processes from small homoepitaxial to larger heteroepitaxial samples is not straightforward and requires adaptation. In this study, we present an approach for the fabrication of functional microstructures including pyramids and mesas as well as more complex structures with hollow centers. The associated methods were previously demonstrated by homoepitaxial growth and are now evaluated on heteroepitaxially grown diamond films. After optimizing the growth procedures to ensure a sufficient quality of the bare diamond substrates, precursor structures for overgrowth were fabricated by e-beam lithography and plasma etching. In the overgrowth of nanopillars, a truncated pyramidal shape was achieved. The characterization with scanning electron microscopy revealed the growth of higher-index facets. Nevertheless, photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals localized doping on the sides of the microstructures. In addition, optically detected magnetic resonance reaches a contrast of 6 % of one preferred nitrogen vacancy orientation per facet and a transverse relaxation time T 2 ∗ of 96 ns. Abstract

Using three-dimensional simulations, we study the dynamics and final structure of merging solitonic cores predicted to form in ultra-light axion dark matter halos. The classical, Newtonian equations of motion of a self-gravitating scalar field are described by the Schr\"odinger-Poisson equations. We investigate mergers of ground state (boson star) configurations with varying mass ratios, relative phases, orbital angular momenta and initial separation with the primary goal to understand the mass loss of the emerging core by gravitational cooling. Previous results showing that the final density profiles have solitonic cores and NFW-like tails are confirmed. In binary mergers, the final core mass does not depend on initial phase difference or angular momentum and only depends on mass ratio, total initial mass, and total energy of the system. For non-zero angular momenta, the otherwise spherical cores become rotating ellipsoids. The results for mergers of multiple cores are qualitatively identical., Comment: 10 pages, 22 figures

Abstract

The gas in galaxy clusters is heated by shock compression through accretion (outer shocks) and mergers (inner shocks). These processes additionally produce turbulence. To analyse the relation between the thermal and turbulent energies of the gas under the influence of non-adiabatic processes, we performed numerical simulations of cosmic structure formation in a box of 152 Mpc comoving size with radiative cooling, UV background, and a subgrid scale model for numerically unresolved turbulence. By smoothing the gas velocities with an adaptive Kalman filter, we are able to estimate bulk flows toward cluster cores. This enables us to infer the velocity dispersion associated with the turbulent fluctuation relative to the bulk flow. For halos with masses above $10^{13}\,M_\odot$, we find that the turbulent velocity dispersions averaged over the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) and the intracluster medium (ICM) are approximately given by powers of the mean gas temperatures with exponents around 0.5, corresponding to a roughly linear relation between turbulent and thermal energies and transonic Mach numbers. However, turbulence is only weakly correlated with the halo mass. Since the power-law relation is stiffer for the WHIM, the turbulent Mach number tends to increase with the mean temperature of the WHIM. Abstract

Wafer‐scale heteroepitaxial diamond thin films demonstrate multiple advantages for a further development of integrated optical and quantum devices based on impurity–vacancy color centers. The main obstacle here is a high structural defect density characteristic for heteroepitaxial epilayers. In this work, technological methods of stress control, NV formation, and defect density reduction in diamond epilayers, which are based on principles of epitaxial lateral overgrowth (ELO) are reported on. Herein, material and quantum properties of NV‐doped diamond thin films obtained by patterned nucleation growth and by ELO of microstructured epilayers, are compared. It is demonstrated that a combination of both methods might have a significant potential for the wafer‐scale production of heteroepitaxial diamond for quantum devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In focus of this report are the mechanisms of formation, propagation, and interaction of growth defects in heteroepitaxial diamond films along with their impact on the optical emission properties of N- and Si-vacancy (NV and SiV) color centers. Here, we analyze and discuss the properties of incoherent grain boundaries (IGBs) and extended defects in a nitrogen- and boron-doped heterodiamond nucleated and grown on Ir(001) via bias-enhanced nucleation and chemical vapor deposition techniques. We show that the low-angle IGBs alter the structural and optical emission properties of NV and SiV complexes by subduing NV emission and supporting the formation of interstitial Si-vacancy complexes dominating in the faulted IGB regions. We also demonstrate that the IGB-confined threading dislocations are responsible for the vertical transport and incorporation of Si impurities in thick layers, leading to an enhanced SiV emission from the IGBs. Abstract

Classical numerical models for the global atmosphere, as used for numerical weather forecasting or climate research, have been developed for conventional central processing unit (CPU) architectures. This now hinders the employment of such models on current top performing supercomputers, which achieve their computing power with hybrid architectures, mostly using graphics processing units (GPUs). Thus also scientific applications of such models are restricted to the lesser computer power of CPUs. Here we present the development of a GPU enabled version of the ICON atmosphere model (ICON-A) motivated by a research project on the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), a global scale wind oscillation in the equatorial stratosphere that depends on a broad spectrum of atmospheric waves, which origins from tropical deep convection. Resolving the relevant scales, from a few km to the size of the globe, is a formidable computational problem, which can only be realized now on top performing supercomputers. This motivated porting ICON-A, in the specific configuration needed for the research project, in a first step to the GPU architecture of the Piz Daint computer at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, and in a second step to the Juwels-Booster computer at the Forschungszentrum Jülich. On Piz Daint the ported code achieves a single node GPU vs. CPU speed-up factor of 6.3, and now allows global experiments at a horizontal resolution of 5 km on 1024 computing nodes with 1 GPU per node with a turnover of 48 simulated days per day. On Juwels-Booster the more modern hardware in combination with an upgraded code base allows for simulations at the same resolution on 128 computing nodes with 4 GPUs per node and a turnover of 133 simulated days per day. Additionally, the code still remains functional on CPUs as it is demonstrated by additional experiments on the Levante compute system at the German Climate Computing Center. While the application shows good weak scaling making also higher resolved global simulations possible, the strong scaling on GPUs is relatively weak, which limits the options to increase turnover with more nodes. Abstract

In Fusionskraftwerken werden Tritium-Permeationsbarrieren benötigt. Oxidkeramik-Dünnschichten sind vielversprechende Kandidaten als Tritium-Permeationsbarrieren. In dieser Arbeit wird Yttriumoxid (Y\(_{2}\)O\(_{3}\)) untersucht, da Yttrium in Hinblick auf die Anwendung eine vorteilhaft kurze Abklingzeit aufweist. Die Y\(_{2}\)O\(_{3}\)-Dünnschichten werden mittels Magnetron Deponierung auf Substraten aufgebracht. Da die Mikrostruktur die Permeationsreduktion beeinflusst, werden mit verschiedenen Prozess-Parametern Y\(_{2}\)O\(_{3}\)-Dünnschichten mit drei unterschiedlichen Mikrostrukturen abgeschieden. Nach dem Tempern wird die kubische Phase aller Dünnschichten bestätigt und die Mikrostruktur wird analysiert. Die Permeationsreduktionsfaktoren der Dünnschichten werden mit druck-getriebenen Permeationsexperimenten untersucht. In Abhängigkeit der Mikrostruktur werden Permeationsreduktionsfaktoren zwischen 25 und 5000 identifiziert. Abstract

Low cost paper based immunoassays are receiving interest due to their fast performance and small amounts of biomolecules needed for developing an immunoassay complex. In this work aggregation-induced emissive (AIE) nanoparticles, obtained from a diastereoisomeric mixture of 1,2-di-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene (TPEDH) in a one-step top-down method, are characterized through Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Zeta potential. By measuring the Zeta potential before and after labeling the nanoparticles with antibodies we demonstrate that the colloidal system is stable in a wide pH-range. The AIE-active nanoparticles are deposited on chitosan and glutaraldehyde modified paper pads overcoming the common aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect. Analyte concentrations from 1000 ng and below are applied in a model immunocomplex using Goat anti-Rabbit IgG and Rabbit IgG. In the range of 7.81 ng–250 ng, linear trends with a high R2 are observed, which leads to a strong increase of the blue fluorescence from the TPEDH nanoparticles.

Abstract

Clouds and aerosols contribute the largest uncertainty to current estimates and interpretations of the Earth's changing energy budget. Here we use a new-generation large-domain large-eddy model, ICON-LEM, to simulate the response of clouds to realistic anthropogenic perturbations in aerosols serving as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). The novelty compared to previous studies is that (i) the LEM is run in weather prediction mode and with fully interactive land surface over a large domain, and (ii) a large range of data from various sources are used for the detection and attribution. The aerosol perturbation was chosen as peak-aerosol conditions over Europe in 1985, with more than five-fold more sulfate than in 2013. Observational data from various satellite and ground-based remote sensing instruments are used aiming at a detection and attribution of this response. The simulation was run for a selected day (2 May 2013) in which over the selected domain of central Europe a large variety of cloud regimes was present. It first is demonstrated, using satellite aerosol optical depth retrievals available for both 1985 and 2013, that the aerosol fields for the reference conditions and also for the perturbed ones, as well as the difference between the two, were consistent in the model and the satellite retrievals. In comparison to retrievals from ground-based lidar for 2013, CCN profiles for the reference conditions were consistent with the observations, while the ones for the 1985 conditions were not. Similarly, detection-and-attribution was successful for droplet number concentrations: the ones simulated for the 2013 conditions were consistent with satellite as well as new ground-based lidar retrievals, while the ones for the 1985 conditions were outside the observational range. For other cloud quantities, including cloud fraction, liquid water path, cloud-base altitude, and cloud lifetime, the aerosol response was small compared to their natural variability. Also, large uncertainties in satellite and ground-based observations make the detection-attribution difficult for these quantities. An exception to this is the fact that at large liquid water path, the control simulation matches the observations, while the perturbed one shows too large LWP. The model simulations allowed to quantify the radiative forcing due to aerosol-cloud interactions, as well as the adjustments to this forcing. The latter were small compared to the variability and showed overall a small positive radiative effect. The overall effective radiative forcing (ERF) due to aerosol-cloud interactions (ERFaci) in the simulation was dominated thus by the Twomey effect and yielded for this day, region, and aerosol perturbation -2.6 W m-2. Using general circulation models to scale this to a global-mean present-day vs. pre-industrial ERFaci yields a global ERFaci of -0.8 W m-2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

HEPiX Spring 2015 at Oxford University, HEPiX Spring 2015, Oxford, Oxford University, UK, 23 Mar 2015 - 27 Mar 2015 ; (2015)., Marionette Collective, also known as MCollective, is a framework for building server orchestration, monitoring, and parallel job execution. MCollective uses a modern "Publish Subscribe Middleware" for a scalable and fast execution environment. It is a powerful tool in combination with Puppet, due to the good integration. However it can be a challenging task to configure and deploy MCollective in a reliable and secure way. In this talk, we will give an overview of our DESY MCollective setup, the design decisions, intended use and encountered problems.

Abstract

In order to study the influence of turbulence on star formation, stellar feedback, and the mixing of metals into the intergalactic medium (IGM) in numerical experiments, we implemented a model for star formation and stellar feedback and employ it in cosmological large eddy simulations using a subgrid scale (SGS) turbulence model. We find that star formation decreases and the efficiency of feedback increases if only SGS terms related to the turbulent cascade and dissipation are incorporated into the equations of gas dynamics. This in turn leads to stronger outflows. Additional injection of turbulent energy by feedback, however, does not affect diagnostics like star formation rates (SFRs) or outflow radii significantly. We also show that turbulent diffusion of metal species does not necessarily lead to a higher enrichment in the IGM, while turbulent diffusion of internal energy results in a global SFR and stacked halo profiles that are almost indistinguishable from the case with no SGS model at all. Abstract

In July 2013 the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) held the first workshop to test extreme scaling on SuperMUC the 3 PFLOP/s system with 147456 Intel Sandy Bridge CPU cores. Groups from 15 international projects came to the LRZ with codes that had already shown scaling up to 4 islands (32768 cores). During the workshop the participants could test the scaling capabilities of their codes on the whole system. Application experts from the LRZ Intel and IBM were on site to resolve issues and assist in the performance optimization. New techniques like fast startup were successfully tested which helped to reduce the startup time by a factor of 2 3. At the end of the workshop 6 applications were successfully running on the full machine while the other 8 applications managed to run on half of the system. The LRZ is already planning a follow up workshop where the improvements and feedback from the experts will be tested. Abstract

The International Large Detector (ILD) is a concept for a detector at the International Linear Collider, ILC. The ILC will collide electrons and positrons at energies of initially 500 GeV, upgradeable to 1 TeV. The ILC has an ambitious physics program, which will extend and complement that of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A hallmark of physics at the ILC is precision. The clean initial state and the comparatively benign environment of a lepton collider are ideally suited to high precision measurements. To take full advantage of the physics potential of ILC places great demands on the detector performance. The design of ILD is driven by these requirements. Excellent calorimetry and tracking are combined to obtain the best possible overall event reconstruction, including the capability to reconstruct individual particles within jets for particle ow calorimetry. This requires excellent spatial resolution for all detector systems. A highly granular calorimeter system is combined with a central tracker which stresses redundancy and efficiency. In addition, efficient reconstruction of secondary vertices and excellent momentum resolution for charged particles are essential for an ILC detector. The interaction region of the ILC is designed to host two detectors, which can be moved into the beam position with a push-pull scheme. The mechanical design of ILD and the overall integration of subdetectors takes these operational condition s into account. Abstract

This study presents two areas of good governance and assesses their relevance for the World Bank's lending policy. First, the definitions and criteria of good governance of four multilateral organisations, namely the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations Development Program and the Development Assistance Committee of the OECD are outlined and discussed. A differentiation between a non-political core area and an associated political area of governance is introduced, and the different governance aspects are allocated to them. Building on these findings, the second part of this study analyses the importance of good governance and alternative factors as lending criteria for the World Bank. Several OLS regressions for three cross-sections between 1983 and 1997 show that the different aspects of good governance play only a subordinate role for the allocation of World Bank credits. Only countries reducing their excessive military potential are favoured by the World Bank shortly after the end of the Cold War. Instead, economic and other donor interests, such as length of colonial dependence, increasingly influence the Bank's credit lending policy over time. The results show little statistical evidence for an impact of recipient need considerations. As previous literature has shown, a negative relationship between population size of a country and the share and change of lending is also observed. Further, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund focus on the same developing countries, whereas the official development assistance of the U.S. is directed to different countries.

Abstract

In the face of its dramatic electoral defeats over the past few years, European social democracy must meet a number of challenges. It must carefully analyze its policies, clearly identify its successes and failures, open itself up both structurally and in terms of its program, and develop a future-oriented political alternative to neoliberalism, »soft» conservatism, and backward-looking populism alike. This process is already in full swing and in this article we aim to present the first interim report on the debate on the future of European social democracy. The analysis commences with a position statement, which seeks explanations of the disastrous election results and engages in some self-criticism. Apart from country-specific factors, seven theses constitute the point of departure: they range from the fulfillment of social democracy's original mission (the »Dahrendorf thesis»); through the diminishing room for party positioning; the loss of discursive hegemony; and the loss of the role of guarantor of social justice; to the alienation of the working class as social democracy's original base; the split of the electoral base into advocates and opponents of globalization; and the transformation of values. The second step in the process of analysis consists of learning lessons and the search for a new social democratic narrative and has already been addressed by social democratic parties, but also by associated foundations, academia, and think tanks. While the basic approaches and headings for a new narrative vary considerably at present, the themes which will have to be worked on — such as solidarity, democracy and a new socio-economic paradigm — tend to be the same. The new social democratic narrative should give convincing answers to the socio-economic, cultural, and political uncertainty that many perceive as a threat. Politics must be restored as an credible and tangible instrument for the positive transformation of social life. Social and economic security, societal recognition and cohesion, as well as democratic participation are not ends in themselves. Politics, society, and the economy are needed, instead, to contribute to people's satisfaction with their lives, self-realization, and happiness. The last and, certainly, most difficult step is the translation of the lessons learned into concrete political measures with the aim of regaining a societal majority in favor of social democratic policies. Decisive for political success in this respect is a party's overall state. Narrative, leadership, scope of action, performance record, partnerships, and strategies on Europe and globalization have to compose a harmonious picture. Abstract

The article examines social democracy and social democratic political parties in Europe. The loss of support among European voters for such parties and centrist political parties in general in the aftermath of the global financial crisis is considered. It is suggested that social democratic parties could better advance their platforms with voters by emphasizing that their end goal is an increase in individual and collective happiness.

Abstract

The article focuses on the failure of European social democratic parties in the European elections. It states that social democracy has lost in the European elections in 2009. It indicates that the SPD in Germany lost votes, showing its worst ever results in European elections, but it was able to sustain its number of seats in the European Parliament. It notes that majority of SPD that did not manage to add seats in the European elections are in opposition.
