A process-based knowledge of the sorption mechanisms in soils is a prerequisite for the prediction of radionuclide transport in soils, plant availability, and leaching risk into groundwater. The present study combined batch sorption experiments of Cs+ and Sr2+ in agricultural soils of differing soil texture with numerical experiments using PHREEQC to identify key processes of sorption at different temperatures. Sorption was simulated for both radionuclides using cation exchange models. In addition, surface complexation was integrated into the reaction network for Sr2+. Our geochemical simulations identified cation exchange on illite as the dominant sorption process for Cs+. Selection of the site types in Cs+ sorption was mainly driven by Cs+ concentration. At low Cs+ concentrations the highly selective frayed edge sites dominated sorption behavior, while less affine site types on illite constituted the major sorption partners at high concentrations. We identified undefined cation exchange as the dominant sorption process for Sr2+, followed by surface complexation on organic matter. These process-based analyses were the basis for field-scale simulations to predict the leaching risk of Cs and Sr radionuclides in agricultural soils under humid climate conditions. For both soils and radionuclides, the distribution coefficients (Kd) varied distinctly with time in shallow layers due to changes in temperature, saturation, and the prevailing dominant sorption processes. During a 3-yr-simulation period, 137Cs+ migrated to depths of 3.6 cm (silty loam) and 7.6 cm (sandy loam), while 90Sr2+ migrated to depths of 15.6 cm (silty loam) and 23.6 cm (sandy loam) due to competitive sorption of infiltrating Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions reducing 90Sr2+ sorption and displacing 90Sr2+ from its exchange sites.

Quellfähige Tone spielen eine bedeutende Rolle bei aktuellen Konzepten zur Endlagerung hoch-radioaktiver Abfälle in kristallinem Wirtsgestein. Zum Schutz vor dem Austritt radioaktiver Substanzen wurden Multi-Barrieren-Konzepte entwickelt. Die Barrieren bestehen aus einem Kupferkanister, aus kompaktiertem Bentonit als Verfüllmaterial (die Geotechnische Barriere) sowie dem Wirtsgestein. Durch Korrosion der Kupferkanister oder Radiolyse kann bei hoch-radioaktiven Abfällen Wasserstoff entstehen. Durch die in diesem Konzept vorgesehene Aufstättigung des Verfüllmaterials mit Kluftwasser wird seine Permeabilität stark reduziert, so dass sich Wasserstoffgas in dem Raum zwischen Kanister und der Geotechnischen Barierre aufstauen kann. Durch diese Gasansammlung kann der Eindringdruck des Verfüllmaterials überschritten werden, und es kommt dann zu einer Migration der Gase durch die Geotechnische Barriere. Zur Untersuchung der thermischen und hydraulischen Eigenschaften des Verfüllmaterials unter Bedingungen, die in untertätigen Endlagern für radioaktiven Abfall herrschen, wurden verschiedene Laborexperimente konzipiert. Alle Experimente wurde mit Natrium- (SPV Volclay) oder Kalzium-Bentonit (Calcigel), der mit Gesteinsmehl vermischt wurde, unter Verwendung von Wässern aus dem Felslabor Äspö durchgeführt. Kapillardruckkurven wurden für alle Sättigungsbereiche mit einer Kapillardruckmessdose und einem Thermohygrometer bestimmt. Hydraulische Säulenexperimente wurden mit einem speziell angefertigten Permeameter durchgeführt. Unter Anwendung der Darcy-Gleichung konnte die Permeabilität berechnet werden. Die thermischen und nicht-isothermalen Drainage Experimente wurden mit Hilfe inverser Modellierung mit dem Computerprogramm iTOUGH2 ausgewertet. Die thermischen Experimente wurden bis zur konstanten Temperaturverteilung durchgeführt. Für alle Zeitpunkte und an allen Messpunkten entsprach die simulierte Temperaturverteilung sehr gut den Messdaten. Die invers geschätzte gesättigte thermische Leitfähigkeit und gesättigte spezifische Wärmekapazität waren konsistent mit Ergebnissen aus empirischen Gleichungen. Anhand von nicht-isothermalen Drainage Experimenten wurden Drücke, Temperaturen und die drainierte Wassermenge gemessen. Mit Hilfe des automatisierten Kalibrierungsverfahrens im iTOUGH2 wurden die gesättigte Permeabilität, die thermische Leitfähigkeit, spezifische Wärmekapazität und der Gaseindringdruck der Bentonit/Gesteinsmehl-Mischung geschätzt. Diese Inversion ergab den gleichen Parametersatz zur Beschreibung der Kapillardruck–Sättigungsbeziehung wie die Messung mit der Kapillardruckmessdose und dem Thermohygrometer. Das nicht-isothermale Drainage Experiment diente des weitern zum Codevergleich zwischen TOUGH2 und RockFlow/RockMech sowie zur Validierung von RockFlow/RockMech. Anhand unterschiedlichster experimenteller, numerischer und analytischer Verfahren konnten konsistente Materialparameter für das Verfüllmaterial bestimmt werden. Diese Materialparameter können nun als Basis zur Simulation weiterer thermisch-hydraulisch gekoppelter Prozesse in untertägigen Deponien für radioaktive Abfälle dienen. Die neu entwickelten Experimente in Kombination mit inverser Modellierung erlauben somit die Bestimmung von Materialparametern die für thermisch-hydraulische Prozesse unter Endlagerbedingungen von ausschlaggebender Bedeutung sind. Swelling clays play a major role in current concepts for the underground disposal of high-level nuclear waste in deep geological formations. In one of the multi-barrier concepts for preventing the escape of radioactive substances from a high-level nuclear waste repository, the barrier consists of a copper container, compacted bentonite as buffer and backfill (the geotechnical barrier), and the repository host rock. Corrosion of the copper canister and radiolysis both produce hydrogen. When the buffer and backfill are saturated with water and the permeability of the bentonite is reduced by swelling, any hydrogen that is produced can accumulate in the space between the container and the geotechnical barrier. This will result in pressures exceeding the entry pressure of the buffer and backfill, and passage of gas through the geotechnical barrier. An experimental program was developed to investigate the thermal and hydraulic properties of the buffer and backfill under conditions expected to exist in a permanent repository for radioactive waste. All experiments were conducted with mixtures containing sodium- (SPV Volclay) or calcium-bentonite (Calcigel) and crushed rock, and we used water from the Äspö test site. Water retention curves were measured from low to high saturation using a pressure cell and a thermohygrometer. Hydraulic column experiments were carried out with a specially designed permeameter and Darcy’s law was applied to determine the permeability. The thermal and non-isothermal drainage laboratory experiments were analyzed with inverse modeling techniques using iTOUGH2. The thermal experiments were conducted until a time-invariant temperature distribution was reached. The simulated temperature distribution matched the measured data very well at all locations along the column and for all times. The inversely estimated thermal conductivity and specific heat were consistent with the predictions of the empirical relationships. Pressure, temperature and the drained water volume were measured with non-isothermal drainage experiments and jointly inverted to estimate absolute permeability, thermal conductivity, specific heat, and capillary strength parameters of the bentonite/crushed rock mixtures. Consistent capillary pressure curves were obtained with the inversion of transient data and the direct pressure cell method. One of the non-isothermal drainage experiments was treated as a benchmark between TOUGH2 and RockFlow/RockMech. The simulation of the experiment served also a validation for RockFlow/RockMech. The parameters estimated using different experimental, numerical, and analytical procedures were consistent with one another, providing backfill material properties useful for the simulation of gas- and heat-generating nuclear waste repositories. The newly developed experimental setup in combination with inverse modeling allows the identification of key parameters governing hydraulic and thermal processes under repository conditions.

Die deutsche Energiewende erfordert nicht nur eine Transformation der Energieproduktion, sondern gleichzeitig ein Aus- und Umbau des Stromnetzes. Ein zunehmender Anteil der Stromtrassen soll dabei unterhalb der Erde verlaufen. Der Trassenbau erfolgt zumeist über die offene Bauweise (OB), die deutlich zeit- und kostenintensiver als der Bau von Freileitungen ist. Eine kostengünstigere und umweltfreundlichere Alternative zur OB ist auf niedrigen Spannungsebenen die Kabelpflugtechnologie (KPT). Ziel dieser Forschungsarbeit besteht in der Beurteilung dieser Technologie als Alternative zur OB auf der 380-kV-Höchstspannungsebene. Den Bewertungsrahmen bilden die Kabelbettanforderungen der offenen Bauweise, die auch vom Kabelpflug erfüllt sein müssen: 1. korrekte Bodentiefen und Abstände der Schutzrohre, Warn- und Schutzbänder, 2. keine Hohlräume, 3. Mindestverdichtung von 80 % zum Referenzboden und 4. Wärmeleitfähigkeiten bei feuchten und trockenen Bodenbedingungen von jeweils 1,0 W m–1 K–1 und 0,4 W m–1 K–1. Diese Anforderungen dienen dem Zweck, während des Betriebs der Stromkabel die Leitertemperaturen, TL, unterhalb einer kritischen Temperatur, Tk = 90°C, zu halten, um Kabelschäden zu verhindern. Zwei Arbeitspakete bestanden dabei in dieser Forschungsarbeit: (i) Feld- und Laboruntersuchungen, um die Auswirkung des Kabelpflugs auf den Boden zu bestimmen, und (ii) numerische Simulationen mit der Software Delphin 6, um die thermische Auswirkung der erfassten Standortbedingungen auf TL zu prognostizieren. Der 1. Prototyp des Kabelpflugs kam 2019 an zwei Standorten, Aurachtal und Wartjenstedt, zum Einsatz. Die Kabelbettanforderungen 1–4 wurden in keinem Profil alle erfüllt. Um eine bessere Bodenverdichtung zu erzielen und die Bildung von Hohlräumen zu unterbinden, wurde zwischen 2019 und 2020 der starre Kabelpflug in einen mobilen Kabelpflug umgebaut. Der 2. Prototyp kam dann 2020 auf der gleichen Trasse in Wartjenstedt zum Einsatz. Durch die Modifikationen konnten Anforderung 1 und 2 erfüllt werden. Zur Überprüfung von Anforderung 3 und 4 wurden die Laboruntersuchungen herangezogen. Mit Hilfe der Wärmeleitfähigkeitsmessung wurde für vier ausgewählte und im Labor selbst gepackte Substrate die λ(θ)-Beziehung ermittelt (Sand: Sl3; Schluff: Ut3; Ton: Lt3; Lehm: Slu). Durch die Messungen ließ sich für jede Bodenart eine Mindesttrockenrohdichte (ρB,min) ermitteln, ab der Kabelbettanforderung 4 erfüllt ist (Lt3: 1,64 g cm–3; Sl3, Slu, Ut3: 1,50 g cm–3). Der Verdichtungsgrad von mindestens 80 % und das Erzielen von ρB,min wurde nur von den lehmigen Profilen erfüllt. Im Jahr 2021 kamen in Aurachtal zuletzt die zwei speziellen Kabelpflugtechniken „Wasserzufuhr“ und „Vibration“ zum Einsatz (Sand, St2), die beide Potenzial zur Verbesserung der Verdichtung aufzeigen. Die Untersuchung von zwei flüssigen Verfüllmaterialien, DrillMix 160 und Cable Cem F 0,4 des Unternehmens HeidelbergCement AG, sollte Aufschluss darüber geben, ob das Einbringen eines der beiden Substrate während des Kabelpflugeinsatzes Hohlräume vermeiden und Verdichtungen erhöhen könnte. Während das Cable Cem F 0,4 den thermischen Kabelbettanforderungen entsprach, wurde bei beiden Substraten während des Austrocknens ein irreversibles Schrumpfen festgestellt. Eine dauerhafte Lösung bietet daher keines der beiden Produkte. Die im Feld und Labor erfassten Eigenschaften der vier Bodenarten wurden in den numerischen Modellierungen berücksichtigt. Zielgröße stellte für die Bewertung TL und Tk dar. Insgesamt ergab sich hinsichtlich TL die Reihenfolge TL,Sand < TL,Schluff < TL,Lehm < TL,Ton mit einer Differenz in TL,median zwischen Sand und Ton von 5,6°C. Neben der Bodenart zeigt sich auch, dass ρB einen relevanten Einfluss auf TL hat. Dabei nahm TL beim Schluff um 0,7°C, beim Ton um 0,6°C und beim Lehm um 0,5°C mit einer Zunahme von ρB um 0,10 g cm–3 ab. Beim Sand wurde ein vernachlässigbarer Effekt ermittelt. TL-Ergebnisse der Kabelpflugszenarien einer Bodenart lagen bis ρB-Werten von 2,0 g cm–3 über denen der OB (Schluff: 1,9 g cm–3). Bei den Kabelpflugszenarien mit ρB = ρB,min betrug für die vier Bodenarten TL der KPT mindestens 103 % (Sand) und höchstens 106 % (Schluff, Ton, Lehm) von TL der OB. Keine der durchgeführten Szenarien ergab dabei TL > Tk. Die Modellierung bei kompletter Austrocknung unterstrich jedoch, dass ρB,min erfüllt sein muss, damit Tk nicht überschritten wird. Die in dieser Forschungsarbeit untersuchten Bodenarten konnten in drei Eignungsklassen für die KPT eingeordnet werden (geeignet, eingeschränkt geeignet, weniger geeignet). Bei Klasse I handelt es sich um nicht bindige Böden und bindige Böden mit breiten Korngrößenverteilungen (Sand, Sl3 und Lehm, Slu). Es bestehen hohe λ(θ)-Werte, während ρB,min im Feld bereits erzielt wird (Lehm) oder erwartet werden kann erzielt zu werden (Sand). Die KPT eignet sich an diesen Standorten. Spezielle Kabelpflugtechniken oder weitere Kabelpflugoptimierungen sind nicht erforderlich. Bei Klasse II handelt es sich um (i) bindige Böden mit mittleren ρB,min-Werten (Schluff, Ut3) und (ii) nicht-bindige Böden mit engen Korngrößenverteilungen in der Sandfraktion mit hohen ρB,min-Werten (Sand, St2). Die erforderlichen ρB,min wurden im Feld nicht (Schluff) bzw. mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit nicht (Sand) erzielt. Für den Sand steht eine Bestimmung von ρB,min noch aus. Die KPT eignet sich eingeschränkt an diesen Standorten. Ein Einsatz des Kabelpflugs unter möglichst trockenen Bodenbedingungen könnte u. U. das Erzielen von ρB,min ohne die speziellen Kabelpflugtechniken ermöglichen, wenn dadurch die Ausrollgrenze der Substrate unterschritten wird. Die Kabelpflugtechniken „Wasserzufuhr“ und „Vibration“ sind in ihrer Verdichtungswirkung noch zu bewerten. Eine Eignung der Klasse II ist zukünftig denkbar. Bei Klasse III handelt es sich um sehr bindige Böden (Ton, Lt3). Diese Böden zeichnen sich aufgrund der Mineralogie durch geringe λ(θ)-Beziehungen aus. Im Feld wird ρB,min nicht erreicht. Aufgrund von möglichem Schrumpfungsverhalten kann u. U. kein dauerhafter Kontakt zwischen Schutzrohr und Bodenmatrix garantiert werden. Die KPT eignet sich weniger an diesen Standorten. Eine Unterschreitung der Ausrollgrenze ist unter den Klimabedingungen Mitteldeutschlands auch nicht nach Trockenperioden zu erwarten. Eine Verbesserung durch den jahreszeitlich bedingten Einsatz des Kabelpflugs sowie durch die Kabelpflugtechniken „Wasserzufuhr“ und „Vibration“ ist daher kritisch zu beurteilen. Das Grundproblem schlechter thermischer Eigenschaften und des möglichen Schrumpfungsverhaltens kann auch nicht durch weitere Optimierungen behoben werden. Die Bestimmung der Eignung aller Bodenarten für die KPT und für den Einsatz der speziellen Kabelpflugtechniken zur Nachverdichtung erfordert weitere Forschungsarbeiten und Kabelpflugeinsätze. Angesichts dieser Ergebnisse kann die KPT auch auf der 380-kV-Spannungsebene unter Erfüllung der erforderlichen Kabelbettanforderungen einen positiven Beitrag zur Energiewende leisten. Weitere Forschungsschwerpunkte lassen sich aus dieser Arbeit ableiten, auf deren Grundlage weitere Optimierungen der KPT und der Modellierungen möglich sind. Zukünftig ist dabei eine stärkere Kooperation zwischen Bodenphysik, Elektrotechnik und Maschinenbau gefordert., The German energy transition requires not only a transformation of energy production but also a simultaneous expansion and reconstruction of the electricity grid. It is assumed that an increasing proportion of the new power lines will run underground. In the past, most of the underground lines were built using the open-cut construction method, which is significantly more time-consuming and cost-intensive than the construction of overhead lines. At low voltage levels, cable-laying plough technology (CLPT) already offers a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate CLPT at the 380 kV extra-high voltage level as an alternative cable-laying method. The evaluation framework is based on the open-cut construction cable bed requirements, which the CLPT also must fulfill. The requirements consist of: 1st) correct soil depths and positions of the cable conduits, warning and protective stripes, 2nd) no air cavities, 3rd) minimum soil compaction of 80 % to the reference soil and 4th) thermal conductivities under wet and dry soil conditions of 1.0 W m–1 K–1 and 0.4 W m–1 K–1, respectively. The purpose of these requirements is to mainain conductor temperatures (TL) below a critical temperature (Tk = 90°C) during power cable operation to prevent cable damage. Two work packages formed the basis for this research: (i) field observations and laboratory tests to determine the effects of the cable plough on soil properties, and (ii) numerical simulations using Delphin 6 software to predict the thermal impact of the identified soil properties on TL. The cable plough manufacturer deployed the 1st prototype at the two investigation sites of this research work, Aurachtal and Wartjenstedt, in 2019. No profile met all cable bed requirements 1 to 4. To achieve better soil compaction and prevent air cavity formation, the manufacturer converted the rigid prototype into a mobile one between 2019 and 2020. Subsequently, the manufacturer deployed the 2nd prototype on the same route in Wartjenstedt in 2020, where the cable plough met requirements 1 and 2. Laboratory investigations were conducted to evaluate requirements 3 and 4. Four substrates found on-site (sand: Sl3; silt: Ut3; clay: Lt3; loam: Slu) were packed in the laboratory with specified bulk densities to determine λ(θ) relationships using thermal conductivity measurements. The measurements allowed to determine a minimum dry bulk density (ρB,min) for each soil texture, above which cable bed requirement 4 is fulfilled (Lt3: 1.64 g cm–3; Sl3, Slu, Ut3: 1.50 g cm–3). Only the loamy profiles of the study sites met the minimum compaction of at least 80 % and ρB,min. In Aurachtal 2021, the manufacturer deployed two individual cable plough functions, “water injection“ and “vibration“, in sandy soils (St2) both showing potential to improve bulk density. In the laboratory, two liquid backfill materials (DrillMix 160 and Cable Cem F 0,4, HeidelbergCement AG) were also tested to determine whether the introduction of these products during the cable ploughing could avoid air cavities and increase the bulk density. While the Cable Cem F 0,4 met the thermal cable bed requirements, both substrates were found to irreversibly shrink during the drying process. Therefore, neither product provides a permanent solution. The thermal conductivity measurements of the four soil textures were taken into account in the numerical simulations. The target values for the evaluation of the simulations were TL and Tk. Regarding TL, we determined the following soil texture order: TL,sand < TL,silt < TL,loam < TL,clay. The difference in TL,median between sand and clay accounted for 5.6°C. Besides soil texture, dry bulk density also impacts TL. An increase in dry bulk density by 0.10 g cm–3 decreases TL by 0.7°C for silt, by 0.6°C for clay, and by 0.5°C for loam. The effects for sand were negligible. Model scenarios representing the cable plough profile calculated higher values for TL, up to bulk densities of 2.0 g cm–3, than open-cut construction scenarios for all soil textures (1.9 g cm–3 for silt). For cable plough scenarios with ρB = ρB,min, the CLPT scenarios for the four soil textures computed minimum 103 % (sand) and maximum 106 % (silt, clay, loam) of the TL-values for the open-cut method. None of the scenarios resulted in TL > Tk. However, simulations with completely desiccated soils underlined that ρB,min must be met for TL values < Tk. Investigated soil textures of this research study (Sl3, St2, Slu, Ut3 and Lt3) could be divided into three different applicability classes regarding CLPT. Class I contains non-cohesive soils and cohesive soils with broad grain size distributions (sand, Sl3 and loam, Slu). These soils have large λ(θ) relations, while ρB,min is obtained on site (loam) or can be expected to be met (sand). The CLPT is applicable at these soil sites, while additional cable plough functions or further cable plough optimisations are not required. Class II contains (i) cohesive soils with medium ρB,min values (silt, Ut3) and (ii) non-cohesive soils with narrow particle size distributions in the sand fraction with high ρB,min values (sand, St2). In the field, ρB,min values were not met (silt) or not met with high probability (sand). Laboratory determination of ρB,min has yet to be accomplished for the sand. The CLPT is only to a limited extent suitable at these soil sites. Without further cable plough optimisations, ρB,min may be achieved if the cable plough is used seasonally under very dry soil conditions. The extent of dryness is required to let the soil´s water content fall below its plastic limit. The additional functions “water injection“ and “vibration“ still need to be evaluated for their compaction potential. The suitability of Class II for CLPT is conceivable in the future. Class III contains very cohesive soils (clay, Lt3). Mineralogically, these soils have low λ(θ) relations. In the field, ρB,min is not achieved. Permanent contact between conduits and soil matrix might possibly not be guaranteed, as these soils are potentially prone to swelling and shrinkage dynamics. CLPT is less suitable at these locations. Under the climatic conditions of central Germany, falling below the plastic limits of clays is unlikely, even after dry periods. Therefore, the increase of bulk densities by seasonal use of the cable plough or the additional functions “water injection“ and “vibration“ must be critically assessed. The basic problem of poor thermal properties and potential shrinkage behaviour cannot be remedied by further optimisation. Determination of the suitability of each soil texture for CLPT and for the application of additional cable plough functions requires future research studies and cable plough deployments. Ultimately, CLPT can positively contribute to the energy transition even at the 380 kV level if necessary cable bed requirements are met. Further research topics can expand on this research work for further optimisation of CLPT and of modelling the respective research questions. These topics require greater cooperation between soil physicists, electrical engineers and mechanical engineers.

Groundwater recharge and contamination are important aspects of groundwater resource management. Groundwater systems are typically constrained by the availability of field observations. Therefore, mathematical models are developed by hydrologists and hydrogeologists to provide a reliable description of the groundwater system for quantitative analysis and uncertainty forecast. However, many current mathematical models are unable to solve emerging issues, such as colloid transport, colloid-facilitated contaminant transport, and stream-aquifer interaction, under varying physicochemical conditions. For example, these issues can be transient flow rate, presence of multiple solutes with competitive sorption, aquifer heterogeneity of porosity, permeability, and spatially and temporally variable streambed hydraulic conductivity. Therefore, this thesis concerns three specific important topics (colloid transport, colloid-facilitated contaminant transport, and stream-aquifer interaction) to develop the corresponding numerical methods and approaches while answering the following important questions: (1) What are the behaviors and mechanisms of silver nanoparticle (AgNP) transport in soil under variable flow and ionic strength (IS)? (2) What is the impact of manure composition on the transport of three sulfonamides, i.e. sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamethoxypyridazine (SMPD), and sulfamoxole (SMOX), in soils? (3) How do transient streambed permeability and aquifer heterogeneity influence stream-aquifer interaction? Regarding each question, three individual numerical models are developed. (1) For colloid transport, the conventional colloid filtration theory, Derjaguin−Landau−Verwey−Overbeek (DLVO) theory, and the colloid release theory are fully integrated to simulate and analyze the AgNP transport under variable flow and IS. (2) A comprehensive colloid-facilitated contaminant transport model is developed based on the general advection-dispersion equation to simulate the manure-derived colloid facilitated sulfonamides transport. The model incorporates the potential competitive sorption of sulfonamides with immobile manure colloids on soil surface, and sulfonamides with sulfonamides on soil surface and mobile manure colloids. (3) A variably saturated groundwater flow model is developed to simulate the stream-aquifer interaction under alternative losing and gaining conditions. The model integrates the temporally variable streambed permeability that is calculated from the inversion of stream stage and groundwater tables, and the spatially heterogeneous aquifer permeability fields that are implemented using multiple-point geostatistics. The key findings from each topic are: (1) Flow interruption can dramatically decrease AgNP transport in soil. Evaporation during flow interruption results in an increased electrical conductivity of the soil solution, leading to a totally reduced mobility of AgNP. The reduction of ionic strength after flow interruption slightly enhances AgNP mobility. Soil colloids might facilitate the transport of AgNP given the strongly increased Al and Fe concentrations in the effluent. The model results reveal that the attachment at the air-water interface (AWI) during flow interruption is the key process of AgNP retention under variably saturated conditions. (2) Manure colloids from fattening pigs with low C/N ratio, high SUVA280nm and protein C can facilitate the transport of SMOX, while manure colloids from sows, farrows and weaners have little effects on SMOX transport. In contrast, only retardation is observed for SDZ and SMPD when manure colloids are present. The model results demonstrate that mobile colloids act as carriers for SMOX, while immobile colloids block SMOX from sorbing on the soil. The low affinity of SMOX to immobile colloids promotes SMOX’s colloid-facilitated transport. Conversely, the high affinity of SDZ and SMPD to sorb on all types of immobile colloids retard their transport. Thus, manure properties play a fundamental role in increasing the leaching risk of hydrophobic sulfonamides. (3) Stream-aquifer exchange flux during infiltration periods was constrained by aquifer permeability. During exfiltration, exchange flux is constrained by the reduced streambed permeability. The two dimensional probability distribution of the infiltration path in the aquifer reveals that such pathways and the associated prediction of the extent of the contaminant plume are highly dependent on aquifer heterogeneity. Grundwasserneubildung und -verunreinigung sind wichtige Themen im Management von Grundwasserressourcen. Die Charakterisierung von Grundwassersystemen ist normalerweise durch fehlende Feldbeobachtungen eingeschränkt. So werden mathematische Modelle von Hydrologen und Hydrogeologen entwickelt, um eine zuverlässige Beschreibung des Grundwassersystems für die quantitative Analyse und die Unsicherheitsprognose zu liefern. Viele derzeitige mathematische Modelle reichen nicht aus um die auftretenden Probleme wie Kolloidtransport, Schadstofftransport mittels Kolloiden und Fluss-Grundwasser-Interaktion, unter unterschiedlich komplexen physikochemischen Bedingungen darzustellen. Herausforderungen können zum Beispiel entstehen durch transiente Flussraten, Vorhandensein von mehreren gelösten Stoffen mit kompetitiver Sorption oder Aquifer-Heterogenität der Porosität, Permeabilität und räumlich und zeitlich veränderliche hydraulische Strömungsleitfähigkeit sein. Daher werden in dieser Arbeit drei spezielle Themen (Kolloidtransport, Schadstofftransport mittels Kolloiden und Fluss-Grundwasser-Wechselwirkung) zur Entwicklung der entsprechenden numerischen Methoden und Ansätze für breitere Anwendungen behandelt, wobei die folgenden Fragen beantwortet werden: (1) Was sind die Verhalten und Mechanismen des Transports von Silbernanopartikeln (AgNP) im Boden unter variabler Strömung und Ionenstärke? (2) Was ist die Auswirkung der Dungzusammensetzung auf den Sulfonamidtransport (im speziellen Sulfadiazin (SDZ), Sulfamethoxypyridazin (SMPD) und Sulfamoxol (SMOX)) in Böden? (3) Wie beeinflussen transiente Permeabilität und Aquifer-Heterogenität die Fluss-Grundwasser-Interaktion? Zu jeder Fragestellung werden drei individuelle numerische Modelle entwickelt. (1) Für den Kolloidtransport sind die konventionelle Kolloidfiltrations-theorie, die Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) Theorie und die Kolloidfreisetzungstheorie (colloid release theory) vollständig integriert, um den AgNP-Transport unter variabler Strömung und Ionenstärke zu simulieren und zu analysieren. (2) Ein umfassendes Modell für den Transport von Schadstoffen durch Kolloide wird auf der Basis der allgemeinen Advektions-Dispersions-Gleichung zur Simulation des Sulfonamidtransports durch Kolloide entwickelt, wobei die potentielle kompetitive Sorption von Sulfonamiden mit immobilen Dungkolloiden an der Bodenoberfläche und Sulfonamiden berücksichtigt wird. (3) Ein Grundwasserströmungsmodell, welches die Wechselwirkungen von Oberflächen- und Grundwasser als auch zeitlich variable Flussbettpermeabilität berücksichtigt, wird entwickelt, um die Fluss-Grundwasser-Wechselwirkung unter variierenden Zu- und Abflüssen zu simulieren. Die variable Flussbettpermeablität wird aus der Inversion von Flutwellenantworten und dem räumlich heterogenen Aquifer berechnet, mittels Permeabilitätsfeldern, die mithilfe von Mehrpunkt-Geostatistik implementiert werden. Die wichtigsten Ergebnisse zu jedem Thema sind: (1) Strömungs-unterbrechung kann den AgNP-Transport im Boden drastisch verringern. Die Verdunstung während der Strömungsunterbrechung führt zu einer erhöhten elektrischen Leitfähigkeit der Bodenlösung, was zu einer vollständig reduzierten Beweglichkeit von AgNP führt. Die Verringerung der Ionenstärke nach einer Strömungsunterbrechung verbessert die AgNP-Mobilität geringfügig. Bodenkolloide könnten angesichts der stark erhöhten Al- und Fe-Konzentrationen im Abwasser den Transport von AgNP erleichtern. Die Modellergebnisse zeigen, dass die Sorption an der Luft-Wasser-Grenzfläche (AWI) während der Strömungsunterbrechung der Schlüsselprozess der AgNP-Retention unter variabel gesättigten Bedingungen ist. (2) Dungkolloide von Mastschweinen mit niedrigem C/N-Verhältnis, hohem SUVA280nm und Protein C können den Transport von SMOX erleichtern, während Dungkolloide von Sauen und Ferkeln wenig Einfluss auf den SMOX-Transport haben. Im Gegensatz dazu werden für SDZ und SMPD nur Verzögerungen im Transport beobachtet, wenn Dungkolloide vorhanden sind. Die Modellergebnisse zeigen, dass mobile Kolloide als Träger für SMOX fungieren, während unbewegliche Kolloide SMOX daran hindern, auf dem Boden zu sorbieren. Die geringe Affinität von SMOX zu unbeweglichen Kolloiden fördert den Kolloidtransport von SMOX. Umgekehrt verzögert die hohe Affinität von SDZ und SMPD an allen Arten von unbeweglichen Kolloiden zu sorbieren ihren Transport. Somit spielen die Gülleeigenschaften eine fundamentale Rolle bei der Erhöhung des Auswaschungsrisikos von hydrophoben Sulfonamiden. (3) Fluss-Grundwasser-Austauschraten während der Infiltrationsperioden wurden durch die Aquiferpermeabilität eingeschränkt. Während der Exfiltration wird der Austausch durch die reduzierte Flussbettpermeabilität eingeschränkt. Die 2-dimensionale Wahrscheinlichkeitsverteilung des Infiltrationsweges im Aquifer zeigt, dass solche Pfade und die damit verbundene Vorhersage der Ausbreitung der Schadstofffahne stark von der Aquiferheterogenität abhängen.
