Lithium-sulfur (Li–S) battery is one of the most promising candidates for the next generation energy storage systems. However, several barriers, including polysulfide shuttle effect, the slow solid-solid surface reaction pathway in the lower discharge plateau, and corrosion of Li anode still limit its practical applications, especially under the lean electrolyte condition required for high energy density. Here, we propose a solution-mediated sulfur reduction pathway to improve the capacity and reversibility of the sulfur cathode. With this method, a high coulombic efficiency (99%) and stable cycle life over 100 cycles were achieved under application-relevant conditions (S loading: 6.2 mg cm−2; electrolyte to sulfur ratio: 3 mLE gs−1; sulfur weight ratio: 72 wt%). This result is enabled by a specially designed Li2S4-rich electrolyte, in which Li2S is formed through a chemical disproportionation reaction instead of electrochemical routes. A single diglyme solvent was used to obtain electrolytes with the optimum range of Li2S4 concentration. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirms the solution pathway in a practical Li–S cell. This solution pathway not only introduces a new electrolyte regime for practical Li–S batteries, but also provides a new perspective for bypassing the inefficient surface pathway for other electrochemical processes.

Conventional electrolytes made by mixing simple Mg2+ salts and aprotic solvents, analogous to those in Li-ion batteries, are incompatible with Mg anodes because Mg metal readily reacts with such electrolytes, producing a passivation layer that blocks Mg2+ transport. Here, we report that, through tuning a conventional electrolyte - Mg(TFSI)2 (TFSI- is N(SO2CF3)2-) - with an Mg(BH4)2 cosalt, highly reversible Mg plating/stripping with a high Coulombic efficiency is achieved by neutralizing the first solvation shell of Mg cationic clusters between Mg2+ and TFSI- and enhanced reductive stability of free TFSI-. A critical adsorption step between Mg0 atoms and active Mg cation clusters involving BH4- anions is identified to be the key enabler for reversible Mg plating/stripping through analysis of the distribution of relaxation times (DRT) from operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), operando electrochemical X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

To enable next-generation high-energy-density lithium (Li)-metal batteries (LMBs), an electrolyte that has simultaneous high Li-metal Coulombic efficiency (CE) and high anodic stability on cathodes is of significant importance. Sulfones are known for strong resistance against oxidation, yet their application in LMBs is restricted because of their poor compatibility with Li-metal anodes, high viscosity, and poor wettability. Here, we demonstrate that a high Li CE over 98% can be achieved in concentrated sulfone-based electrolytes. Furthermore, the viscosity and wettability issues of sulfones are resolved by the addition of a fluorinated ether, 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether, to form a localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE), which not only provides further improvement in Li CE (98.8%) but also remains anodically stable with high-voltage cathodes, suppresses Al corrosion, and enables LMBs to operate in a wide temperature range. As a result, significantly improved cycling performance of LMBs has been realized with sulfone-based LHCE. For high-voltage rechargeable lithium (Li)-metal batteries (LMBs), electrolytes with good stabilities on both the highly oxidative cathodes and the highly reductive Li-metal anodes are urgently desired. Sulfones have excellent oxidative stability, yet their high viscosity, poor wettability, and, in particular, incompatibility with Li anodes greatly hinder their applications in LMBs. Here, we demonstrate that a high Li Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 98.2% during repeated Li plating and stripping cycles can be realized in concentrated lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI)-tetramethylene sulfone electrolyte. More importantly, the localized high-concentration electrolyte, formed by the dilution of the high-concentration electrolyte with a non-solvating fluorinated ether, 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether, solves the viscosity and wettability issues, further improves Li CE (98.8%), and improves the high-voltage (4.9 V) performance of LMBs with effective Al protection. High-voltage batteries with Li-metal anodes can offer desirable high energy densities. Despite their excellent oxidative stability, sulfones have various limitations to be useful in Li-metal batteries, in particular their instability with Li metal. Here, we achieved a high Li Coulombic efficiency of nearly 99% in a sulfone-based localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE) with the addition of a non-solvating co-solvent. In addition, this co-solvent is highly beneficial for realizing stable battery cycling up to 4.9 V.

Incorporation of pollutants, e.g., heavy metals, or critical elements, e.g., lithium, as impurities in mineral phases can significantly affect their mobility or sequestration in the environment. Even when present at low concentrations, impurities can alter the solubility and reactivity of the host mineral. In this study, we investigate the incorporation of trace amounts of iron (Fe 3+ ) and chromium (Cr 3+ ) during the crystal growth of the aluminum (Al 3+ ) hydroxide, gibbsite, a major component of bauxite ores, an important soil mineral, and a dominant mineral phase in stored radioactive wastes. Using a comprehensive suite of analytical techniques, we show that both Cr 3+ and Fe 3+ can be incorporated into the gibbsite lattice during coprecipitation by replacing Al 3+ in octahedral sites. These small amounts are consistent with limited to no structural isomorphism shared between Al 3+ and Cr 3+ /Fe 3+ hydroxide precipitates, nor room temperature miscibility of their isostructural M 2 O 3 oxide forms, in contrast with oxyhydroxide forms where Al 3+ and Fe 3+ share similar structural topologies. Despite the limited uptake of Cr 3+ /Fe 3+ , we show that these impurities have significant implications for gibbsite dissolution behavior. The limited uptake of Cr 3+ /Fe 3+ (e.g. 0.43% Cr 3+ and 0.4% Fe 3+ ), we show that these impurities have significant implications for gibbsite dissolution behavior and subsequent reactivity in complex environments.

Cobalt recovery from low-grade mafic and ultramafic ores could be economically viable if combined with CO 2 storage under low-water conditions, but the impact of Co on metal silicate carbonation and the fate of Co during the carbonation reaction must be understood. In this study, in situ infrared spectroscopy was used to investigate the carbonation of Co-doped forsterite ((Mg,Co) 2 SiO 4 ) in thin water films in humidified supercritical CO 2 at 50 °C and 90 bar. Rates of carbonation of Co-doped forsterite to Co-rich magnesite ((Mg,Co)CO 3 ) increased with water film thickness but were at least 10 times smaller than previously measured for pure forsterite at similar conditions. We suggest that the smaller rates are due to thermodynamic drivers that cause water films on Co-doped forsterite to be much less oversaturated with respect to Co-doped magnesite, compared to the pure minerals.

Sodium (Na)-metal batteries (SMBs) are considered one of the most promising candidates for the large-scale energy storage market owing to their high theoretical capacity (1,166 mAh g -1 ) and the abundance of Na raw material. However, the limited stability of electrolytes still hindered the application of SMBs. Herein, sulfolane (Sul) and vinylene carbonate (VC) are identified as effective dual additives that can largely stabilize propylene carbonate (PC)-based electrolytes, prevent dendrite growth, and extend the cycle life of SMBs. The cycling stability of the Na/NaNi 0.68 Mn 0.22 Co 0.1 O 2 (NaNMC) cell with this dual-additive electrolyte is remarkably enhanced, with a capacity retention of 94% and a Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.9% over 600 cycles at a 5 C (750 mA g -1 ) rate. The superior cycling performance of the cells can be attributed to the homogenous, dense, and thin hybrid solid electrolyte interphase consisting of F- and S-containing species on the surface of both the Na metal anode and the NaNMC cathode by adding dual additives. Such unique interphases can effectively facilitate Na-ion transport kinetics and avoid electrolyte depletion during repeated cycling at a very high rate of 5 C. Polyolefin separators are the most common separators used in rechargeable lithium (Li)-ion batteries. However, the influence of different polyolefin separators on the performance of Li metal batteries (LMBs) has not been well studied. By performing particle injection simulations on the reconstructed three-dimensional pores of different polyethylene separators, it is revealed that the pore structure of the separator has a significant impact on the ion flux distribution, the Li deposition behavior, and consequently, the cycle life of LMBs. It is also discovered that the homogeneity factor of Li-ion toward Li metal electrode is positively correlated to the longevity and reproducibility of LMBs. Protonation of oxide cathodes triggers surface transition metal dissolution and accelerates the performance degradation of Li-ion batteries. While strategies are developed to improve cathode material surface stability, little is known about the effects of protonation on bulk phase transitions in these cathode materials or their sodium-ion battery counterparts. Here, using NaNiO 2 in electrolytes with different proton-generating levels as model systems, a holistic picture of the effect of incorporated protons is presented. Protonation of lattice oxygens stimulate transition metal migration to the alkaline layer and accelerates layered-rock-salt phase transition, which leads to bulk structure disintegration and anisotropic surface reconstruction layers formation. A cathode that undergoes severe protonation reactions attains a porous architecture corresponding to its multifold performance fade. This work reveals that interactions between electrolyte and cathode that result in protonation can dominate the structural reversibility/stability of bulk cathodes, and the insight sheds light for the development of future batteries., (© 2023 Battelle Memorial Institute. Fe-N-C single-atom catalysts (SACs) exhibit excellent peroxidase (POD)-like catalytic activity, owing to their well-defined isolated iron active sites on the carbon substrate, which effectively mimic the structure of natural peroxidase's active center. To further meet the requirements of diverse biosensing applications, SAC POD-like activity still needs to be continuously enhanced. Herein, a phosphorus (P) heteroatom is introduced to boost the POD-like activity of Fe-N-C SACs. A 1D carbon nanowire (FeNCP/NW) catalyst with enriched Fe-N 4 active sites is designed and synthesized, and P atoms are doped in the carbon matrix to affect the Fe center through long-range interaction. The experimental results show that the P-doping process can boost the POD-like activity more than the non-P-doped one, with excellent selectivity and stability. The mechanism analysis results show that the introduction of P into SAC can greatly enhance POD-like activity initially, but its effect becomes insignificant with increasing amount of P. As a proof of concept, FeNCP/NW is employed in an enzyme cascade platform for highly sensitive colorimetric detection of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine., (© 2023 The Authors. Proton transfer is critically important to many electrocatalytic reactions, and directed proton delivery could open new avenues for the design of electrocatalysts. However, although this approach has been successful in molecular electrocatalysis, proton transfer has not received the same attention in heterogeneous electrocatalyst design. Here, we report that a metal oxide proton relay can be built within heterogeneous electrocatalyst architectures and improves the kinetics of electrochemical hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions. The volcano-type relationship between activity enhancement and p K a of amine additives confirms this improvement; we observe maximum rate enhancement when the p K a of a proton relay matches the pH of the electrolyte solution. Density-functional-theory-based reactivity studies reveal a decreased proton transfer energy barrier with a metal oxide proton relay. These findings demonstrate the possibility of controlling the proton delivery and enhancing the reaction kinetics by tuning the chemical properties and structures at heterogeneous interfaces.

The solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) critically governs the performance of rechargeable batteries. An ideal SEI is expected to be electrically insulative to prevent persistently parasitic reactions between the electrode and the electrolyte and ionically conductive to facilitate Faradaic reactions of the electrode. However, the true nature of the electrical properties of the SEI remains hitherto unclear due to the lack of a direct characterization method. Here we use in situ bias transmission electron microscopy to directly measure the electrical properties of SEIs formed on copper and lithium substrates. We reveal that SEIs show a voltage-dependent differential conductance. A higher rate of differential conductance induces a thicker SEI with an intricate topographic feature, leading to an inferior Coulombic efficiency and cycling stability in Li∣∣Cu and Li∣∣LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 cells. Our work provides insight into the targeted design of the SEI with desired characteristics towards better battery performance.

Anisotropic and efficient transport of ions under external stimuli governs the operation and failure mechanisms of energy-conversion systems and microelectronics devices. However, fundamental understanding of ion hopping processes is impeded by the lack of atomically precise materials and probes that allow for the monitoring and control at the appropriate time- and length- scales. In this work, using in-situ transmission electron microscopy, we directly show that oxygen ion migration in vacancy ordered, semiconducting SrFeO 2.5 epitaxial thin films can be guided to proceed through two distinctly different diffusion pathways, each resulting in different polymorphs of SrFeO 2.75 with different ground electronic properties before reaching a fully oxidized, metallic SrFeO 3 phase. The diffusion steps and reaction intermediates are revealed by means of ab-initio calculations. The principles of controlling oxygen diffusion pathways and reaction intermediates demonstrated here may advance the rational design of structurally ordered oxides for tailored applications and provide insights for developing devices with multiple states of regulation., (© 2023. The quality of the solid-electrolyte interphase is crucial for the performance of most battery chemistries, but its formation dynamics during operation are not well understood due to a lack of reliable operando characterization techniques. Herein, we report a dynamic, non-invasive, operando reflection interference microscope to enable the real-time imaging of the solid-electrolyte interphase during its formation and evolution processes with high sensitivity. The stratified structure of the solid-electrolyte interphase formed during four distinct steps includes the emergence of a permanent inner inorganic layer enriched in LiF, a transient assembly of an interfacial electrified double layer and a consequent emergence of a temporary outer organic-rich layer whose presence is reversible with electrochemical cycling. Reflection interference microscope imaging reveals an inverse correlation between the thicknesses of two interphasial subcomponents, implying that the permanent inorganic-rich inner layer dictates the organic-rich outer layer formation and lithium nucleation. The real-time visualization of solid-electrolyte interphase dynamics provides a powerful tool for the rational design of battery interphases., (© 2023. Single atoms of platinum group metals on CeO 2 represent a potential approach to lower precious metal requirements for automobile exhaust treatment catalysts. Here we show the dynamic evolution of two types of single-atom Pt (Pt 1 ) on CeO 2 , i.e., adsorbed Pt 1 in Pt/CeO 2 and square planar Pt 1 in Pt AT CeO 2 , fabricated at 500 °C and by atom-trapping method at 800 °C, respectively. Adsorbed Pt 1 in Pt/CeO 2 is mobile with the in situ formation of few-atom Pt clusters during CO oxidation, contributing to high reactivity with near-zero reaction order in CO. In contrast, square planar Pt 1 in Pt AT CeO 2 is strongly anchored to the support during CO oxidation leading to relatively low reactivity with a positive reaction order in CO. Reduction of both Pt/CeO 2 and Pt AT CeO 2 in CO transforms Pt 1 to Pt nanoparticles. However, both catalysts retain the memory of their initial Pt 1 state after reoxidative treatments, which illustrates the importance of the initial single-atom structure in practical applications., (© 2023. Localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) based on five different types of solvents were systematically studied and compared in lithium (Li)-ion batteries (LIBs). The unique solvation structure of LHCEs promotes the participation of Li salt in forming solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on graphite (Gr) anode, which enables solvents previously considered incompatible with Gr to achieve reversible lithiation/delithiation. However, the long cyclability of LIBs is still subject to the intrinsic properties of the solvent species in LHCEs. Such issue can be readily resolved by introducing a small amount of additive into LHCEs. The synergetic decompositions of Li salt, solvating solvent and additive yield effective SEIs and cathode electrolyte interphases (CEIs) in most of the studied LHCEs. Atom trapping leads to catalysts with atomically dispersed Ru 1 O 5 sites on (100) facets of ceria, as identified by spectroscopy and DFT calculations. This is a new class of ceria-based materials with Ru properties drastically different from the known M/ceria materials. They show excellent activity in catalytic NO oxidation, a critical step that requires use of large loadings of expensive noble metals in diesel aftertreatment systems. Ru 1 /CeO 2 is stable during continuous cycling, ramping, and cooling as well as the presence of moisture. Furthermore, Ru 1 /CeO 2 shows very high NO x storage properties due to formation of stable Ru-NO complexes as well as a high spill-over rate of NO x onto CeO 2 . Only ∼0.05 wt % of Ru is required for excellent NO x storage. Ru 1 O 5 sites exhibit much higher stability during calcination in air/steam up to 750 °C in contrast to RuO 2 nanoparticles. We clarify the location of Ru(II) ions on the ceria surface and experimentally identify the mechanism of NO storage and oxidation using DFT calculations and in situ DRIFTS/mass spectroscopy. Moreover, we show excellent reactivity of Ru 1 /CeO 2 for NO reduction by CO at low temperatures: only 0.1-0.5 wt % of Ru is sufficient to achieve high activity. Modulation-excitation in situ infrared and XPS measurements reveal the individual elementary steps of NO reduction by CO on an atomically dispersed Ru ceria catalyst, highlighting unique properties of Ru 1 /CeO 2 and its propensity to form oxygen vacancies/Ce +3 sites that are critical for NO reduction, even at low Ru loadings. Our study highlights the applicability of novel ceria-based single-atom catalysts to NO and CO abatement.

In beam-based ionization methods, the substrate plays an important role on the desorption mechanism of molecules from surfaces. Both the specific orientation that a molecule adopts at a surface and the strength of the molecule-surface interaction can greatly influence desorption processes, which in turn will affect the ion yield and the degree of in-source fragmentation of a molecule. In the beam-based method of secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), in-source fragmentation can be significant and molecule specific due to the hard ionization method of using a primary ion beam for molecule desorption. To investigate the role of the substrate on orientation and in-source fragmentation, we have used atomistic simulations-molecular dynamics in combination with density functional theory calculations-to explore the desorption of a sphingolipid (palmitoylsphingomyelin) from a model surface (gold). We then compare SIMS data from this model system to our modeling findings. Using this approach, we found that the combined adsorption and binding energy of certain bonds associated with the headgroup fragments (C 3 H 8 N + , C 5 H 12 N + , C 5 H 14 NO + , and C 5 H 15 PNO 4 + ) was a good predictor for fragment intensities (as indicated by relative ion yields). This is the first example where atomistic simulations have been applied in beam-based ionization of lipids, and it presents a new approach to study biointerfacial lipid ordering effects on SIMS imaging.

Silicon is a high-capacity material for the anode of a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. One of the fundamental challenges for using Si in anodes is capacity fading, which has been revealed to be partially associated with the interfacial instability between the Si and liquid electrolyte due to the large volume swing of Si upon charging and discharging. Smart nanoscale design concepts, either presynthesized or formed in situ, have led to the mitigation of the detrimental factors associated with the volume swing of Si. However, it has never been clear how the chemical state of Si evolves and contributes to the capacity fading upon battery cycling. Here, we use cryo-electron energy loss spectroscopy to directly monitor, at a subnanometer scale, the chemical evolution of Si upon battery cycling. We discover that during the cycling process Si particles are progressively oxidized to form SiO 2 , which is initiated from the particle surface and gradually penetrates toward the interior of the particle, directly contributing to the capacity fading. Possible mechanisms of Si oxidation are postulated. We further show how the cycling stability can be improved by an electrolyte additive to form an effective passivation layer, representatively, even a small concentration of fluoroethylene carbonate causes the formation of an LiF layer on the Si nanoparticle surface that prevents Si oxidation and improves cycling stability. The present work unveils Si oxidation as a previously unrecognized factor that contributes to capacity fading, therefore providing insight into the design of anodes with Si-based materials.

Soil fungi facilitate the translocation of inorganic nutrients from soil minerals to other microorganisms and plants. This ability is particularly advantageous in impoverished soils because fungal mycelial networks can bridge otherwise spatially disconnected and inaccessible nutrient hot spots. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying fungal mineral weathering and transport through soil remains poorly understood primarily due to the lack of a platform for spatially resolved analysis of biotic-driven mineral weathering. Here, we addressed this knowledge gap by demonstrating a mineral-doped soil micromodel platform where mineral weathering mechanisms can be studied. We directly visualize acquisition and transport of inorganic nutrients from minerals through fungal hyphae in the micromodel using a multimodal imaging approach. We found that Fusarium sp. strain DS 682, a representative of common saprotrophic soil fungus, exhibited a mechanosensory response (thigmotropism) around obstacles and through pore spaces (~12 μm) in the presence of minerals. The fungus incorporated and translocated potassium (K) from K-rich mineral interfaces, as evidenced by visualization of mineral-derived nutrient transport and unique K chemical moieties following fungus-induced mineral weathering. Specific membrane transport proteins were expressed in the fungus in the presence of minerals, including those involved in oxidative phosphorylation pathways and the transmembrane transport of small-molecular-weight organic acids. This study establishes the significance of a spatial visualization platform for investigating microbial induced mineral weathering at microbially relevant scales. Moreover, we demonstrate the importance of fungal biology and nutrient translocation in maintaining fungal growth under water and carbon limitations in a reduced-complexity soil-like microenvironment. IMPORTANCE Fungal species are foundational members of soil microbiomes, where their contributions in accessing and transporting vital nutrients is key for community resilience. To date, the molecular mechanisms underlying fungal mineral weathering and nutrient translocation in low-nutrient environments remain poorly resolved due to the lack of a platform for spatial analysis of biotic weathering processes. Here, we addressed this knowledge gap by developing a mineral-doped soil micromodel platform. We demonstrate the function of this platform by directly probing fungal growth using spatially resolved optical and chemical imaging methodologies. We found the presence of minerals was required for fungal thigmotropism around obstacles and through soil-like pore spaces, and this was related to fungal transport of potassium (K) and corresponding K speciation from K-rich minerals. These findings provide new evidence and visualization into hyphal transport of mineral-derived nutrients under nutrient and water stresses.

Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) represents one of the most promising directions for high-energy-density lithium (Li)-sulfur batteries. However, the practical application of Li||SPAN is currently limited by the insufficient chemical/electrochemical stability of electrode/electrolyte interphase (EEI). Here, a pinned EEI layer is designed for stabilizing a SPAN cathode by regulating the EEI formation mechanism in an advanced LiFSI/ether/fluorinated-ether electrolyte. Computational simulations and experimental investigations reveal that, benefiting from the nonsolvating nature, the fluorinated-ether can not only act as a protective shield to prevent the Li polysulfides dissolution but also, more importantly, endow a diffusion-controlled EEI formation process. It promotes the formation of a uniform, protective, and conductive EEI layer pinning into SPAN surface region, enabling the high loading Li||SPAN batteries with superior cycling stability, wide temperature performance, and high-rate capability. This design strategy opens an avenue for exploring advanced electrolytes for Li||SPAN batteries and guides the interface design for broad types of battery systems.

Point-of-care (POC) detection of herbicides is of great importance due to their impact on the environment and potential risks to human health. Here, we design a single-atomic site catalyst (SASC) with excellent peroxidase-like (POD-like) catalytic activity, which enhances the detection performance of corresponding lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA). The iron single-atomic site catalyst (Fe-SASC) is synthesized from hemin-doped ZIF-8, creating active sites that mimic the Fe active center coordination environment of natural enzyme and their functions. Due to its atomically dispersed iron active sites that result in maximum utilization of active metal atoms, the Fe-SASC exhibits superior POD-like activity, which has great potential to replace its natural counterparts. Also, the catalytic mechanism of Fe-SASC is systematically investigated. Utilizing its outstanding catalytic activity, the Fe-SASC is used as label to construct LFIA (Fe-SASC-LFIA) for herbicide detection. The 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is selected as a target here, since it is a commonly used herbicide as well as a biomarker for herbicide exposure evaluation. A linear detection range of 1-250 ng/mL with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.82 ng/mL has been achieved. Meanwhile, excellent specificity and selectivity towards 2,4-D have been obtained. The all-solid-state battery (ASSB) is a promising next-generation energy storage technology for both consumer electronics and electric vehicles because of its high energy density and improved safety. Sulfide solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) have merits of low density, high ionic conductivity, and favorable mechanical properties compared to oxide ceramic and polymer materials. However, mass production and processing of sulfide SSEs remain a grand challenge because of their poor moisture stability. Here, we report a reversible surface coating strategy for enhancing the moisture stability of sulfide SSEs using amphipathic organic molecules. An ultrathin layer of 1-bromopentane is coated on the sulfide SSE surface (e.g., Li 7 P 2 S 8 Br 0.5 I 0.5 ) via Van der Waals force. 1-Bromopentane has more negative adsorption energy with SSEs than H 2 O based on first-principles calculations, thereby enhancing the moisture stability of SSEs because the hydrophobic long-chain alkyl tail of 1-bromopentane repels water molecules. Moreover, this amphipathic molecular layer has a negligible effect on ionic conductivity and can be removed reversibly by heating at low temperatures (e.g., 160 °C). This finding opens a new pathway for the surface engineering of moisture-sensitive SSEs and other energy materials, thereby speeding up their deployment in ASSBs.

We present a novel anode interface modification on the β″-alumina solid-state electrolyte that improves the wetting behavior of molten sodium in battery applications. Heat treating a simple slurry, composed only of water, acetone, carbon black, and lead acetate, formed a porous carbon network decorated with PbO x (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) nanoparticles between 10 and 50 nm. Extensive performance analysis, through impedance spectroscopy and symmetric cycling, shows a stable, low-resistance interface for close to 6000 cycles. Furthermore, an intermediate temperature Na-S cell with a modified β″-alumina solid-state electrolyte could achieve an average stable cycling capacity as high as 509 mA h/g. This modification drastically decreases the amount of Pb content to approximately 3% in the anode interface (6 wt % or 0.4 mol %) and could further eliminate the need for toxic Pb altogether by replacing it with environmentally benign Sn. Overall, in situ reduction of oxide nanoparticles created a high-performance anode interface, further enabling large-scale applications of liquid metal anodes with solid-state electrolytes.

Despite cobalt (Co)-free/nickel (Ni)-rich layered oxides being considered as one of the promising cathode materials due to their high specific capacity, their highly reactive surface still hinders practical application. Herein, a polyimide/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PI/PVP, denoted as PP) coating layer is demonstrated as dual protection for the LiNi 0.96 Mg 0.02 Ti 0.02 O 2 (NMT) cathode material to suppress surface contamination against moist air and to prevent unwanted interfacial side reactions during cycling. The PP-coated NMT (PP@NMT) preserves a relatively clean surface with the bare generation of lithium residues, structural degradation, and gas evolution even after exposure to air with ∼30% humidity for 2 weeks compared to the bare NMT. In addition, the exposed PP@NMT significantly enhances the electrochemical performance of graphite||NMT cells by preventing byproducts and structural distortion. Moreover, the exposed PP@NMT achieves a high capacity retention of 86.7% after 500 cycles using an advanced localized high-concentration electrolyte. This work demonstrates promising protection of Co-free/Ni-rich layered cathodes for their practical usage even after exposure to moist air.

A single-atom Pt 1 /CeO 2 catalyst formed by atom trapping (AT, 800 °C in air) shows excellent thermal stability but is inactive for CO oxidation at low temperatures owing to over-stabilization of Pt 2+ in a highly symmetric square-planar Pt 1 O 4 coordination environment. Reductive activation to form Pt nanoparticles (NPs) results in enhanced activity; however, the NPs are easily oxidized, leading to drastic activity loss. Herein we show that tailoring the local environment of isolated Pt 2+ by thermal-shock (TS) synthesis leads to a highly active and thermally stable Pt 1 /CeO 2 catalyst. Ultrafast shockwaves (>1200 °C) in an inert atmosphere induced surface reconstruction of CeO 2 to generate Pt single atoms in an asymmetric Pt 1 O 4 configuration. Owing to this unique coordination, Pt 1 δ+ in a partially reduced state dynamically evolves during CO oxidation, resulting in exceptional low-temperature performance. We developed a new approach to attach particles onto a conductive layer as a working electrode (WE) in a microfluidic electrochemical cell with three electrodes. Nafion, an efficient proton transfer molecule, is used to form a thin protection layer to secure particle electrodes. Spin coating is used to develop a thin and even layer of Nafion membrane. The effects of Nafion (5 wt% 20 wt%) and spinning rates were evaluated using multiple sets of replicates. The electrochemical performance of various devices was demonstrated. Additionally, the electrochemical performance of the devices is used to select and optimize fabrication conditions. The results show that a higher spinning rate and a lower Nafion concentration (5 wt%) induce a better performance, using cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) particles as a testing model. The WE surfaces were characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy-focused ion beam (SEM-FIB), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The comparison between the pristine and corroded WE surfaces shows that Nafion is redistributed after potential is applied. Our results verify that Nafion membrane offers a reliable means to secure particles onto electrodes. Furthermore, the electrochemical performance is reliable and reproducible. Thus, this approach provides a new way to study more complex and challenging particles, such as uranium oxide, in the future.

Perfluorobutyric acid (PFBA) is one type of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and is widely used as an industrial compound. The removal of PFBA has attracted considerable scientific interests in recent decades because it causes environmental pollution and human diseases. Currently, the adsorption method has been used commonly to remove PFASs from wastewater. However, it is usually limited by the inevitable "secondary waste" produced in this treatment process. In this work, PFBA can be effectively removed by synergistic electrical switching ion exchange (ESIX) and a new type of nanostructured ion exchanger. Herein, the nanostructured ion exchanger has been designed and synthesized by coating a polypyrrole (PPy)@Fe 2 O 3 nanoneedle on carbon cloth (PPy@Fe 2 O 3 NN-CC). Results show that the PPy@Fe 2 O 3 NN-CC nanocomposite enhances ion exchange speed and efficiency, which ensures its high adsorption capacity and rapid regeneration property, thereby reducing secondary waste. Moreover, ESIX based on the PPy@Fe 2 O 3 NN-CC nanocomposite has high selectivity for adsorption of PFBA over other common anions in water, such as Cl - , SO 4 2- , and NO 3 - .

Iron-carbide-based catalysts have been explored in the selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenol, aiming at elucidating the role of active site and alkali metal. Complementary characterization such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with electron energy loss spectroscopy, together with catalytic evaluations revealed a rapid structural reconstruction of iron carbide (Fe 3 C) catalysts, leading to a stable defective graphene-covered metallic Fe active phase (G@Fe) under reaction conditions. Further studies using different alkali metals (i. e., Na, K, and Cs) revealed that alkali metals showed negligible effect on the phase transformation of Fe 3 C. However, the reconstructed G@Fe doped with alkali metals inhibited the tautomerization, a facile reaction pathway to saturation of the aromatic ring, leading to enhanced selectivity to arene. The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed millions of lives worldwide, sickened many more, and has resulted in severe socioeconomic consequences. As society returns to normal, understanding the spread and persistence of SARS CoV-2 on commonplace surfaces can help to mitigate future outbreaks of coronaviruses and other pathogens. We hypothesize that such an understanding can be aided by studying the binding and interaction of viral proteins with nonbiological surfaces. Here, we propose a methodology for investigating the adhesion of the SARS CoV-2 spike glycoprotein on common inorganic surfaces such as aluminum, copper, iron, silica, and ceria oxides as well as metallic gold. Quantitative adhesion was obtained from the analysis of measured forces at the nanoscale using an atomic force microscope operated under ambient conditions. Without imposing further constraints on the measurement conditions, our preliminary findings suggest that spike glycoproteins interact with similar adhesion forces across the majority of the metal oxides tested with the exception to gold, for which attraction forces ∼10 times stronger than all other materials studied were observed. Ferritin, which was used as a reference protein, was found to exhibit similar adhesion forces as SARS CoV-2 spike protein. This study results show that glycoprotein adhesion forces for similar ambient humidity, tip shape, and contact surface are nonspecific to the properties of metal oxide surfaces, which are expected to be covered by a thin water film. The findings suggest that under ambient conditions, glycoprotein adhesion to metal oxides is primarily controlled by the water capillary forces, and they depend on the surface tension of the liquid water. We discuss further strategies warranted to decipher the intricate nanoscale forces for improved quantification of the adhesion.

The criticality of cobalt (Co) has been motivating the quest for Co-free positive electrode materials for building lithium (Li)-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the LIBs based on Co-free positive electrode materials usually suffer from relatively fast capacity decay when coupled with conventional LiPF 6 -organocarbonate electrolytes. To address this issue, a 1,2-dimethoxyethane-based localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE) was developed and evaluated in a Co-free Li-ion cell chemistry (graphite||LiNi 0.96 Mg 0.02 Ti 0.02 O 2 ). Extraordinary capacity retentions were achieved with the LHCE in coin cells (95.3%), single-layer pouch cells (79.4%), and high-capacity loading double-layer pouch cells (70.9%) after being operated within the voltage range of 2.5-4.4 V for 500 charge/discharge cycles. The capacity retentions of counterpart cells using the LiPF 6 -based conventional electrolyte only reached 61.1, 57.2, and 59.8%, respectively. Mechanistic studies reveal that the superior electrode/electrolyte interphases formed by the LHCE and the intrinsic chemical stability of the LHCE account for the excellent electrochemical performance in the Co-free Li-ion cells.

Lithium (Li)-magnesium (Mg) alloy with limited Mg amount, which can also be called Mg-doped Li (Li-Mg), has been considered as a potential alternative anode for high energy density rechargeable Li metal batteries. However, the optimum doping-content of Mg in Li-Mg anode and the mechanism of the improved performance are not well understood. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used to investigate the effect of Mg amount in Li-Mg anode. The Li-Mg with about 5 wt. % Mg (abbreviated as Li-Mg5) has the lowest absorption energy of Li, thus all the surface area can be "controlled" by Mg atoms, leading to the smooth and continuous deposition of Li on the surface around the Mg center. A localized high concentration electrolyte enables Li-Mg5 to exhibit the best cycling stability in Li metal batteries with high-loading cathode and lean electrolyte under 4.4 V high-voltage, which is approaching the demand of practical application. This electrolyte also helps generate an inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interphase, which leads to smooth, compact and less corrosion layer on the Li-Mg5 surface. The lithium (Li) metal polymer battery (LMPB) is a promising candidate for solid-state batteries with high safety. However, high voltage stability of such a battery has been hindered by the use of polyethylene oxide (PEO), which oxidizes at a potential lower than 4 V versus Li. Herein, we adopt the polymer-in-salt electrolyte (PISE) strategy to circumvent the disadvantage of the PEO-lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) system with EO/Li ≤ 8 through a dry ball-milling process to avoid the contamination of the residual solvent. The obtained solid-state PISEs exhibit distinctly different morphologies and coordination structures which lead to significant improvement in oxidative stability. P(EO) 1 LiFSI has a low melting temperature, a high ionic conductivity at 60 °C, and an oxidative stability of ∼4.5 V versus Li/Li + . With an effective interphase rich in inorganic species and a good stability of the hybrid polymer electrolyte toward Li metal, the LMPB constructed with Li||LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 can retain 74.4% of capacity after 186 cycles at 60 °C under the cutoff charge voltage of 4.3 V. The findings offer a promising pathway toward high-voltage stable polymer electrolytes for high-energy-density and safe LMPBs.

Despite being an effective flame retardant, trimethyl phosphate (TMP a ) is generally considered as an unqualified solvent for fabricating electrolytes used in graphite (Gr)-based lithium-ion batteries as it readily leads to Gr exfoliation and cell failure. In this work, by adopting the unique solvation structure of localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE) to TMP a and tuning the composition of the solvation sheaths via electrolyte additives, excellent electrochemical performance can be achieved with TMP a -based electrolytes in Gr∥LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 cells. After 500 charge/discharge cycles within the voltage range of 2.5-4.4 V, the batteries containing the TMP a -based LHCE with a proper additive can achieve a capacity retention of 85.4 %, being significantly higher than cells using a LiPF 6 -organocarbonates baseline electrolyte (75.2 %). Carbon-based single-atom catalysts (CSACs) have recently received extensive attention in catalysis research. However, the preparation process of CSACs involves a high-temperature treatment, during which metal atoms are mobile and aggregated into nanoparticles, detrimental to the catalytic performance. Herein, an ion-imprinting derived strategy is proposed to synthesize CSACs, in which isolated metal-nitrogen-carbon (Me-N 4 -C x ) moiety covalently binds oxygen atoms in Si-based molecular sieve frameworks. Such a feature makes Me-N 4 -C x moiety well protected/confined during the heat treatment, resulting in the final material enriched with single-atom metal active sites. As a proof of concept, a single-atom Fe-N-C catalyst is synthesized by using this ion-imprinting derived strategy. Electrolyte is very critical to the performance of the high-voltage lithium (Li) metal battery (LMB), which is one of the most attractive candidates for the next-generation high-density energy-storage systems. Electrolyte formulation and structure determine the physical properties of the electrolytes and their interfacial chemistries on the electrode surfaces. Localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) outperform state-of-the-art carbonate electrolytes in many aspects in LMBs due to their unique solvation structures. Types of fluorinated cosolvents used in LHCEs are investigated here in searching for the most suitable diluent for high-concentration electrolytes (HCEs). Nonsolvating solvents (including fluorinated ethers, fluorinated borate, and fluorinated orthoformate) added in HCEs enable the formation of LHCEs with high-concentration solvation structures. However, low-solvating fluorinated carbonate will coordinate with Li + ions and form a second solvation shell or a pseudo-LHCE which diminishes the benefits of LHCE. In addition, it is evident that the diluent has significant influence on the electrode/electrolyte interphases (EEIs) beyond retaining the high-concentration solvation structures. Diluent molecules surrounding the high-concentration clusters could accelerate or decelerate the anion decomposition through coparticipation of diluent decomposition in the EEI formation. The varied interphase features lead to significantly different battery performance. This study points out the importance of diluents and their synergetic effects with the conductive salt and the solvating solvent in designing LHCEs. Reducing the operating temperature of conventional molten sodium-sulfur batteries (∼350 °C) is critical to create safe and cost-effective large-scale storage devices. By raising the surface treatment temperature of lead acetate trihydrate, the sodium wettability on β''-Al2O3 improved significantly at 120 °C. The low temperature Na-S cell can reach a capacity as high as 520.2 mA h g-1 and stable cycling over 1000 cycles.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high-nickel (Ni) content LiNi x Mn y Co z O 2 ( x + y + z = 1) (NMC with Ni ≥ 0.6) cathodes operated at high charge voltages have been considered as one of the most promising candidates for addressing the challenge of increasing energy density demand. Conventional LiPF 6 -organocarbonate electrolytes exhibit incompatibility with such cell chemistries under certain testing conditions because of the instability of electrode/electrolyte interphases. In response to this challenge, ether-based electrolytes with finely tuned structure and composition of solvation sheaths were developed and evaluated in graphite (Gr)∥NMC811 cell chemistry in 2.5-4.4 V, despite ethers being conventionally considered to be unfavorable electrolyte solvents for LIBs because of their anodic instability above 4.0 V and cointercalation into Gr electrodes. The functional ether-based electrolytes in this work enable both excellent cycle life and high rate capability of Gr∥NMC811 cells. Mechanistic studies reveal that the unique structure and composition of the solvation sheath of the functional ether electrolytes are the main reasons behind their excellent anodic stability and effective protection of the Gr electrode and, consequently, the extraordinary cell performances when operated at high charge cutoff voltages. This work also provides a feasible approach in developing highly stable functional electrolytes for high-energy density LIBs.

High-energy-density batteries with a LiCoO 2 (LCO) cathode are of significant importance to the energy-storage market, especially for portable electronics. However, their development is greatly limited by the inferior performance under high voltages and challenging temperatures. Here, highly stable lithium (Li) metal batteries with LCO cathode, through the design of in situ formed, stable electrode/electrolyte interphases on both the Li anode and the LCO cathode, with an advanced electrolyte, are reported. The LCO cathode can deliver a high specific capacity of ≈190 mAh g -1 and show greatly improved cell performances under a high charge voltage of 4.5 V (even up to 4.55 V) and a wide temperature range from -30 to 55 °C. This work points out a promising approach for developing Li||LCO batteries for practical applications. Functional electrolyte is the key to stabilize the highly reductive lithium (Li) metal anode and the high-voltage cathode for long-life, high-energy-density rechargeable Li metal batteries (LMBs). However, fundamental mechanisms on the interactions between reactive electrodes and electrolytes are still not well understood. Recently localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) are emerging as a promising electrolyte design strategy for LMBs. Here, we use LHCEs as an ideal platform to investigate the fundamental correlation between the reactive characteristics of the inner solvation sheath on electrode surfaces due to their unique solvation structures. The effects of a series of LHCEs with model electrolyte solvents (carbonate, sulfone, phosphate, and ether) on the stability of high-voltage LMBs are systematically studied. The stabilities of electrodes in different LHCEs indicate the intrinsic synergistic effects between the salt and the solvent when they coexist on electrode surfaces. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal an intriguing general rule that the strong interactions between the salt and the solvent in the inner solvation sheath promote their intermolecular proton/charge transfer reactions, which dictates the properties of the electrode/electrolyte interphases and thus the battery performances., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interest.

Creating new functionality in materials containing transition metals is predicated on the ability to control the associated charge states. For a given transition metal, there is an upper limit on valence that is not exceeded under normal conditions. Here, it is demonstrated that this limit of 3+ for Ni and Fe can be exceeded via synthesis of (SrNiO 3 ) m /(LaFeO 3 ) n superlattices by tuning n and m. The Goldschmidt tolerance constraints are lifted, and SrNi 4+ O 3 with holes on adjacent O anions is stabilized as a perovskite at the single-unit-cell level (m = 1). Holding m = 1, spectroscopy reveals that the n = 1 superlattice contains Ni 3+ and Fe 4+ , whereas Ni 4+ and Fe 3+ are observed in the n = 5 superlattice. It is revealed that the B-site cation valences can be tuned by controlling the magnitude of the FeO 6 octahedral rotations, which, in turn, determine the energy balance between Ni 3+ /Fe 4+ and Ni 4+ /Fe 3+ , thus controlling emergent electrical properties such as the band alignment and resulting hole confinement. Although most studies of organic matter (OM) stabilization in soils have focused on adsorption to aluminosilicate and iron-oxide minerals due to their strong interactions with organic nucleophiles, stabilization within alkaline soils has been empirically correlated with exchangeable Ca. Yet the extent of competing processes within natural soils remains unclear because of inadequate characterization of soil mineralogy and OM distribution within the soil in relation to minerals, particularly in C poor alkaline soils. In this study, we employed bulk and surface-sensitive spectroscopic methods including X-ray diffraction, 57 Fe-Mössbauer, and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods to investigate the minerology and soil organic C and N distribution on individual fine particles within an alkaline soil. Microscopy and XPS analyses demonstrated preferential sorption of Ca-containing OM onto surfaces of Fe-oxides and calcite. This result was unexpected given that the bulk combined amounts of quartz and Fe-containing feldspars of the soil constitute ~90% of total minerals and the surface atomic composition was largely Fe and Al (>10% combined) compared to Ca (4.2%). Soil sorption experiments were conducted with two siderophores, pyoverdine and enterobactin, to evaluate the adsorption of organic molecules with functional groups that strongly and preferentially bind Fe. A greater fraction of pyoverdine was adsorbed compared to enterobactin, which is smaller, less polar, and has a lower aqueous solubility. Using NanoSIMS to map the distribution of isotopically-labeled siderophores, we observed correlations with Ca and Fe, along with strong isotopic dilution with native C, indicating associations with OM coatings rather than with bare mineral surfaces. The incorporation of relatively minor impurity metals onto metal (oxy)hydroxides can strongly impact solubility. In complex highly alkaline multicomponent radioactive tank wastes such as those at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, tests indicate that the surface area-normalized dissolution rate of boehmite (γ-AlOOH) nanomaterials is at least an order of magnitude lower than that predicted for the pure phase. Here, we examine the dissolution kinetics of boehmite coated by adsorbed Cr(III), which adheres at saturation coverages as sparse chemisorbed monolayer clusters. Using 40 nm boehmite nanoplates as a model system, temperature-dependent dissolution rates of pure versus Cr(III)-adsorbed boehmite showed that the initial rate for the latter is consistently several times lower, with an apparent activation energy 16 kJ·mol -1 higher. Although the surface coverage is only around 50%, solution analysis coupled to multimethod solids characterization reveal a phyicochemical armoring effect by adsorbed Cr(III) that substantially reduces the number of dissolution-active sites on particle surfaces. Such findings could help improve kinetics models of boehmite and/or metal ion adsorbed boehmite nanomaterials, ultimately providing a stronger foundation for the development of more robust complex radioactive liquid waste processing strategies.

Development of inexpensive sulfur-free catalysts for selective hydrogenolysis of the C-O bond in phenolics ( i.e. , selective removal of oxygen without aromatic ring saturation) under liquid-phase conditions is highly challenging. Here, we report an efficient approach to engineer earth-abundant Fe catalysts with a graphene overlayer and alkali metal ( i.e. , Cs), which produces arenes with 100% selectivity from liquid-phase hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenolics with high durability. In particular, we report that a thin (a few layers) surface graphene overlayer can be engineered on metallic Fe particles (G@Fe) by a controlled surface reaction of a carbonaceous compound, which prevents the iron surface from oxidation by hydroxyls or water produced during HDO reaction. More importantly, further tailoring the surface electronic properties of G@Fe with the addition of cesium, creating a Cs-G@Fe composite catalyst in contrast to a deactivated Cs@Fe one, promotes the selective C-O bond cleavage by inhibiting the tautomerization, a pathway that is very facile under liquid-phase conditions.
