Meridional heat transport induced by oceanic mesoscale eddies (EHT) plays a significant role in the heat budget of the Southern Ocean (SO) but the decadal trends in EHT and its associated mechanisms are still obscure. Here, this scientific issue is investigated by combining concurrent satellite observations and Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean, Phase II (ECCO2) reanalysis data over the 24 years between 1993 and 2016. The results reveal that the surface EHTs from both satellite and ECCO2 data consistently show decadal poleward increasing trends in the SO, particularly in the latitude band of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). In terms of average in the ACC band, the ECCO2-derived EHT over the upper 1000 m has a linear trend of 1.1 × 10−2 PW decade−1 or 16% per decade compared with its time-mean value of 0.07 PW. Diagnostic analysis based on "mixing length" theory suggests that the decadal strengthening of eddy kinetic energy (EKE) is the dominant mechanism for the increase in EHT in the SO. By performing an energy budget analysis, we further find that the decadal increase in EKE is mainly caused by the strengthened baroclinic instability of large-scale circulation that converts more available potential energy to EKE. For the strengthened baroclinic instability in the SO, it is attributed to the increasing large-scale wind stress work on the large-scale circulation corresponding to the positive phase of the Southern Annular Mode between 1993 and 2016. The decadal trends in EHT identified here may help understand decadal variations of heat storage and sea ice extent in the SO. Satellite observations reveal that decreasing surface albedo in both polar regions is increasing the absorption of solar radiation, but the disposition of this absorbed energy is fundamentally different. Fluxes of absorbed solar radiation, emitted thermal radiation, and net energy imbalances are assessed for both polar regions for the last 21 years in the Clouds and Earth's Radiant Energy System record. Arctic absorbed solar radiation is increasing at 0.98 ± 0.69 W m−2 decade−1, consistent with the anticipated response to sea ice loss. However, Arctic thermal emission is responding at a similar rate of 0.94 ± 0.55 W m−2 decade−1. This is surprising since the radiative impact of ice loss would be expected to favor increasing solar absorption. We find however, that clouds substantially mask trends in Arctic solar absorption relative to clear sky while having only a modest impact on thermal emission trends. As a result, the Arctic net radiation imbalance has not changed over the period. Furthermore, variability of absorbed solar radiation explains two-thirds of the variability in annual thermal emission suggesting that Arctic thermal fluxes rapidly adjust to offset changes in solar absorption and re-establish equilibrium. Conversely, Antarctic thermal emission is not responding to the increasing (although not yet statistically significant) solar absorption of 0.59 ± 0.64 W m−2 decade−1 with less than a third of the annual thermal variability explained by accumulated solar absorption. The Arctic is undergoing rapid adjustment to increasing solar absorption resulting in no change to the net energy deficit, while increasing Antarctic solar absorption represents additional energy input into the Earth system. Significance Statement: The polar regions of Earth are undergoing ice loss through ongoing global warming, reducing the ice cover and decreasing solar reflectivity, which would be expected to warm these regions. We use satellite observations to measure the trends in solar absorption and emitted thermal radiation over the Arctic and Antarctic for the last two decades. Arctic thermal emission is increasing at a compensating rate to solar absorption with a close relationship between these processes. Conversely, Antarctic thermal emission is not responding to solar absorption demonstrating that Antarctic surface temperatures are not significantly influenced by the region's reflectivity. The surface sensible heat flux induced by precipitation (QP) is a consequence of the temperature difference between the surface and the rain droplets. Despite its seemingly negligible nature, QP is frequently omitted from both meteorological and climatological models. Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge the numerous occasions in which the instantaneous values of QP can be significant, particularly during extreme precipitation events. This study undertakes a comprehensive assessment of QP across the contiguous United States (CONUS) utilizing high-resolution reanalysis, observational data, and numerical modeling to examine the influence of QP on precipitation and the surface energy budget. The findings indicate that the spatial distribution of QP climatology is analogous to that of precipitation, with magnitudes ranging from 2 to 3 W m−2 predominantly over the Midwest and Southeast regions. A seasonal analysis of QP reveals that the highest values occurring during the June–August (JJA) period, averaging 3.18 W m−2. Peak QP values of approximately 4 W m−2 are observed during JJA over the Great Plains region. We hypothesize that the QP during an extreme precipitation event would be nonnegligible and have a significant impact on the local weather. To test this conjecture, we perform high-resolution simulations with and without QP during an extreme precipitation event over the Chicago Metropolitan Area (CMA). The results show that the QP may be a dominant factor compared to other components of surface heat flux during the zenith of precipitation hours. Interactions between large-scale waves and the Hadley cell are examined using a linear two-layer model on an f plane. A linear meridional moisture gradient determines the strength of the idealized Hadley cell. The trade winds are in thermal wind balance with a weak temperature gradient (WTG). The mean meridional moisture gradient is unstable to synoptic-scale (horizontal scale of ∼1000 km) moisture modes that are advected westward by the trade winds, reminiscent of oceanic tropical depression–like waves. Meridional moisture advection causes the moisture modes to grow from "moisture-vortex instability" (MVI), resulting in a poleward eddy moisture flux that flattens the zonal-mean meridional moisture gradient, thereby weakening the Hadley cell. The amplification of waves at the expense of the zonal-mean meridional moisture gradient implies a downscale latent energy cascade. The eddy moisture flux is opposed by a regeneration of the meridional moisture gradient by the Hadley cell. These Hadley cell–moisture mode interactions are reminiscent of quasigeostrophic interactions, except that wave activity is due to column moisture variance rather than potential vorticity variance. The interactions can result in predator–prey cycles in moisture mode activity and Hadley cell strength that are akin to ITCZ breakdown. It is proposed that moisture modes are the tropical analog to midlatitude baroclinic waves. MVI is analogous to baroclinic instability, stirring latent energy in the same way that dry baroclinic eddies stir sensible heat. These results indicate that moisture modes stabilize the Hadley cell and may be as important as the latter in global energy transport. Significance Statement: The tropics are characterized by steady circulations such as the Hadley cell as well as a menagerie of tropical weather systems. Despite progress in our understanding of both, little is known about how the mean circulations and the weather systems interact with one another. Here we show that tropical waves can grow by extracting moisture from the Hadley cell, thereby weakening it. They also transport moisture to higher latitudes. Our results challenge the notion that the Hadley cell is the sole transporter of energy out of the tropics and instead favor a view where tropical waves are also essential for the global energy balance. Two global atmospheric circulation datasets (ERA5 and NCEP FNL) with horizontal resolutions of 0.25° × 0.25° are investigated in terms of kinetic energy (KE) spectra at 200 hPa (roughly between 11 and 12 km). The horizontal KE (HKE) in NCEP FNL is larger and flatter than that in ERA5 at subsynoptic scales and mesoscales. Restoring the energy of this wavenumber range to the physical space shows that the HKE in NCEP FNL is larger than that in ERA5 over most areas but smaller mainly in the Indo-Pacific warm pool. The spectral budgets show that at these scales, the positive contribution from net vertical flux in ERA5 is stronger than that in NCEP FNL, while the negative contribution from available potential energy (APE) conversion is smaller; assuming that the atmosphere is in a quasi-stationary state, more dissipation is found in ERA5 than in NCEP FNL, which should be responsible for the HKE spectrum in ERA5 to be steeper and weaker than that in NCEP FNL. Our formulation shows that the APE conversion and net vertical flux are related to the pressure vertical velocity (PVV). The APE conversion and net vertical flux differences between the two datasets, like the PVV difference, are mainly from the tropical region. At large scales, the vertical motion in ERA5 is larger than that in NCEP FNL. The amplitude differences of the PVV spectra between two datasets are consistent with those of the large-scale precipitation spectra associated with microphysics parameterizations. These results support that vertical motion is a key dynamical factor explaining energy discrepancies at mesoscales. Significance Statement: The atmospheric kinetic energy spectrum reflects energy distribution characteristics in atmospheric motion at different scales. According to the Helmholtz decomposition, the horizontal wind field can be decomposed into two parts: rotational wind field and divergent wind field. We explore the dynamical causes of the atmospheric energy spectra differences among different datasets from the perspective of rotational and divergent components of motion. Our results reveal that the differences in energy spectra and their energy budget at scales below a few hundred kilometers are relatively significant in tropical regions and are closely related to vertical motion. Between 15 and 19 March 2022, East Antarctica experienced an exceptional heat wave with widespread 30°–40°C temperature anomalies across the ice sheet. In Part I, we assessed the meteorological drivers that generated an intense atmospheric river (AR) that caused these record-shattering temperature anomalies. Here, we continue our large collaborative study by analyzing the widespread and diverse impacts driven by the AR landfall. These impacts included widespread rain and surface melt that was recorded along coastal areas, but this was outweighed by widespread high snowfall accumulations resulting in a largely positive surface mass balance contribution to the East Antarctic region. An analysis of the surface energy budget indicated that widespread downward longwave radiation anomalies caused by large cloud-liquid water contents along with some scattered solar radiation produced intense surface warming. Isotope measurements of the moisture were highly elevated, likely imprinting a strong signal for past climate reconstructions. The AR event attenuated cosmic ray measurements at Concordia, something previously never observed. Last, an extratropical cyclone west of the AR landfall likely triggered the final collapse of the critically unstable Conger Ice Shelf while further reducing an already record low sea ice extent. Significance Statement: Using our diverse collective expertise, we explored the impacts from the March 2022 heat wave and atmospheric river across East Antarctica. One key takeaway is that the Antarctic cryosphere is highly sensitive to meteorological extremes originating from the midlatitudes and subtropics. Despite the large positive temperature anomalies driven from strong downward longwave radiation, this event led to huge amounts of snowfall across the Antarctic interior desert. The isotopes in this snow of warm airmass origin will likely be detectable in future ice cores and potentially distort past climate reconstructions. Even measurements of space activity were affected. Motivated by the observation that the interannual variability of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is associated with the ensemble emergence of individual NAO events occurring on the intraseasonal time scale, one naturally wonders how the intraseasonal processes cause the interannual variability and what the dynamics are underlying the multiscale interaction. Using a novel time-dependent and spatially localized multiscale energetics formalism, this study investigates the dynamical sources for the NAO events with different phases and interannual regimes. For the positive-phase events (NAO+), the intraseasonal-scale kinetic energy (K1) over the North Atlantic sector is significantly enhanced for NAO+ occurring in the negative NAO winter regime (NW), compared to those in the positive winter regime (PW). It is caused by the enhanced inverse cascading from synoptic transients and reduced energy dispersion during the life cycle of NAO+ in NW. For the negative-phase events (NAO−), K1 is significantly larger during the early and decay stages of NAO− in NW than that in PW, whereas the reverse occurs in the peak stage. Inverse cascading and baroclinic energy conversion are primary drivers in the formation of the excessive K1 during the early stage of NAO− in NW, whereas only the latter contributes to the larger K1 during the decay stage of NAO− in NW compared to that in PW. The barotropic transfer from the mean flow, inverse cascading, and baroclinic energy conversion are all responsible for the strengthened K1 in the peak stage of NAO− in PW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Total solar eclipses (TSEs) are impressive astronomical events that have attracted people's curiosity since ancient times. Their abrupt alterations to the radiation balance have stimulated studies on "eclipse meteorology," most of them documenting events in the Northern Hemisphere while only one TSE (23 November 2003) has been described over Antarctica. On 4 December 2021--just a few days before the austral summer solstice--the moon blocked the sun over the austral high latitudes, with the path of totality arching from the Weddell Sea to the Amundsen Sea, thus producing a ~2-min central TSE. In this work we present high-resolution meteorological observations from Union Glacier Camp (80°S, 83°W), the only location with a working station under totality, and South Pole station. These observations were complemented with meteorological records from 37 surface stations across Antarctica. Notably, the largest cooling (~5°C) was observed over the East Antarctic dome, where obscurity was ~85% while many sectors experienced insignificant temperature changes. This heterogenous cooling distribution, at odds with the seemingly homogeneous land surface of Antarctica, is partially captured by a simple radiative model. To further diagnose the effect of the eclipse on the surface meteorology, we ran multiple pairs of simulations (eclipse enabled and disabled) using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model. The overall pattern and magnitude of the simulated cooling agree well with the observations and reveal that, in addition to the solar radiation deficit and cloud cover, low-level winds and the height of the planetary boundary layer are key determinants of the temperature changes and their spatial variability. The third edition of the CM SAF Cloud, Albedo and Surface Radiation dataset from AVHRR data (CLARA-A3) contains for the first time the top-of-atmosphere products reflected solar flux (RSF) and outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), which are presented and validated using CERES, HIRS, and ERA5 reference data. The products feature an unprecedented resolution (0.25°) and time span (4 decades) and offer synergy and compatibility with other CLARA-A3 products. The RSF is relatively stable; its bias with respect to (w.r.t.) ERA5 remains mostly within ±2 W m−2. Deviations are predominantly caused by absence of either morning or afternoon satellite, mostly during the first decade. The radiative impact of the Pinatubo volcanic eruption is estimated at 3 W m−2. The OLR is stable w.r.t. ERA5 and HIRS, except during 1979–80. OLR regional uncertainty w.r.t. HIRS is quantified by the mean absolute bias (MAB) and correlates with observation density and time (satellite orbital configuration), which is optimal during 2002–16, with monthly and daily MAB of approximately 1.5 and 3.5 W m−2, respectively. Daily OLR uncertainty is higher (MAB +40%) during periods with only morning or only afternoon observations (1979–87). During the CERES era (2000–20), the OLR uncertainties w.r.t. CERES-EBAF, CERES-SYN, and HIRS are very similar. The RSF uncertainty achieves optimal results during 2002–16 with a monthly MAB w.r.t. CERES-EBAF of ∼2 W m−2 and a daily MAB w.r.t. CERES-SYN of ∼5 W m−2, and it is more sensitive to orbital configuration than is OLR. Arctic warm extremes and anomalous sea ice melting have been linked to episodic injections of warm and moist air from midlatitudes, as well as airmass transformations inside the Arctic. However, the relative importance of remote and local processes for such events remains unclear. Here, we focus on events with extreme positive daily-mean surface energy budget (SEB) anomalies over Arctic sea ice in ERA5 data during extended winters (November–March during 1979–2020). Kinematic backward trajectories from the tropospheric column collocated with the SEB anomalies show that near-surface air is of Arctic origin, whereas air farther aloft is transported poleward from the midlatitudes and ascends. Despite the different origin of the air, the entire tropospheric column shows pronounced potential temperature anomalies (on the order of 10 K) building up along air-parcel trajectories over 2–4 days. Quantifying the contributions of horizontal and vertical transport as well as diabatic processes to the generation of these potential temperature anomalies emphasizes the relevance of horizontal advection across the climatological potential temperature gradient for the generation of the anomalies at all levels. Anomalies aloft are further enhanced by latent heating and those near the surface by subsidence, respectively. Surface heat fluxes over subpolar and polar oceans are key for warming and moistening the near-surface air of predominantly Arctic origin and maintaining a positive potential temperature anomaly, which due to its proximity to the surface unfolds the strongest impact on the SEB. The moist static energy (MSE) budget is widely used to understand moist atmospheric thermodynamics. However, the budget is not exact, and the accuracy of the approximations that yield it has not been examined rigorously in the context of large-scale tropical motions (horizontal scales ≥ 1000 km). A scale analysis shows that these approximations are most accurate in systems whose latent energy anomalies are considerably larger than the geopotential and kinetic energy anomalies. This condition is satisfied in systems that exhibit phase speeds and horizontal winds on the order of 10 m s-1 or less. Results from a power spectral analysis of data from the DYNAMO field campaign and ERA5 qualitatively agree with the scaling, although they indicate that the neglected terms are smaller than what the scaling suggests. A linear regression analysis of the MJO events that occurred during DYNAMO yields results that support these findings. It is suggested that the MSE budget is accurate in the tropics because motions within these latitudes are constrained to exhibit small fluctuations in geopotential and kinetic energy as a result of weak temperature gradient (WTG) balance. In the tropics, the absorbed solar radiation is larger than the outgoing longwave radiation, while the opposite is true at high latitudes. This basic fact implies a poleward energy transport (PET) in both hemispheres, which is accomplished by the atmosphere and oceans. The magnitude of PET is determined by the top of atmosphere gradient in the net radiation flux, and small changes to this quantity must change the total PET in the absence of changes in heat uptake. We analyze a large ensemble of 50 historic climate simulations from the CESM LENS2 project and find a significant PET anomaly in the latter half of the twentieth century. The temporal evolution of this anomaly—with a rapid increase after 1950, a peak near 1975, and a rapid decrease in the 1990s—mirrors the historic trend of sulfur dioxide (SO2, a significant aerosol predecessor) emissions from Europe and North America. This anomaly also appears in an analysis of the PET calculated from ERA5 reanalyses and from the CESM2 Single Forcing Large Ensemble. Consistent with previous studies, we find that historic SO2 emissions from Europe and North America brightened clouds, which reflected additional solar radiation back to space in the midlatitudes: this shortwave anomaly increased the meridional gradient in the net TOA radiation flux and induced an anomalous northward energy transport. Finally, our results suggest that cryosphere processes become an additional important factor in setting the PET anomaly during the first years of the twenty-first century by contributing to the difference in absorbed solar radiation between hemispheres alongside cloud radiative effects. significance statement: In this study, we analyze a large group of climate model simulations from 1850 to 2014 and find that this historical pollution changed the way that heat was transported from the tropics to Earth's poles. We also find this change in heat transport when we analyzed an atmospheric reanalysis, which is a historical dataset that combines many meteorological observations into a best estimate of the past climate state. This extra reflection of sunlight from polluted clouds cooled the Northern Hemisphere, and we hypothesize that this cooling caused more heat transport out of the tropics. Last, we find that similar pollution emitted from China and India in more recent decades has not led to a change in Earth's heat transport because of counteracting changes in snow and ice in the Northern Hemisphere. This paper estimates a two-component energy balance model as a linear state-space system (EBM-SS model) using historical data. It is a joint model for the temperature in the mixed layer, the temperature in the deep ocean layer, and radiative forcing. The EBM-SS model allows for the modeling of nonstationarity in forcing and the incorporation of multiple data sources for the unobserved processes. We estimate the EBM-SS model using historical datasets at the global level for the period 1955–2020 by maximum likelihood. We show in the empirical estimation and in simulations that using multiple data sources for the unobserved processes reduces parameter estimation uncertainty. When fitting the EBM-SS model to six observational global mean surface temperature (GMST) anomaly series, the GMST projections under representative concentration pathway scenarios are comparable to those from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project models. The results show that a simple statistical climate model estimated on the historical period can produce GMST projections compatible with output from large-scale Earth system models. Significance Statement: We develop a statistical model to understand Earth's energy balance and how it impacts temperature across the planet's surface and deep oceans. Unlike previous approaches, ours is fully statistical. This means that we use maximum likelihood to calculate the estimates and evaluate the level of uncertainty in the model's parameters. By applying the model to historical data from 1955 to 2020, we are able to make predictions about the average global surface temperature that are consistent with those from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. The radiative forcing of carbon dioxide (CO2) at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) has a rich spatial structure and has implications for large-scale climate changes, such as poleward energy transport and tropical circulation change. Beyond the TOA, additional CO2 increases downwelling longwave at the surface, and this change in flux is the surface CO2 forcing. Here we thoroughly evaluate the spatiotemporal variation of the instantaneous, longwave CO2 radiative forcing at both the TOA and surface. The instantaneous forcing is calculated with a radiative transfer model using ERA5 reanalysis fields. Multivariate regression models show that the broadband forcing at the TOA and surface are well predicted by local temperatures, humidity, and cloud radiative effects. The difference between the TOA and surface forcing, the atmospheric forcing, can be either positive or negative and is mostly controlled by the column water vapor, with little explicit dependence on the surface temperature. The role of local variables on the TOA forcing is also assessed by partitioning the change in radiative flux to the component emitted by the surface versus that emitted by the atmosphere. In cold, dry regions, the surface and atmospheric contribution partially cancel out, leading to locally weak or even negative TOA forcing. In contrast, in the warm, moist regions, the surface and atmospheric components strengthen each other, resulting in overall larger TOA forcing. The relative contributions of surface and atmosphere to the TOA forcing depend on the optical thickness in the current climate, which in turn is controlled by the column water vapor. The climate responses to Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) fluctuations are investigated in a hierarchy of sensitivity experiments. We modify the baroclinic component of the North Atlantic Ocean currents online in an atmosphere–ocean general circulation model to reproduce typical AMOC multidecadal variability found in a preindustrial control simulation in the same model. An analogous experiment is also conducted using a slab-ocean experiment. The responses to a strong AMOC include a widespread warming in the Northern Hemisphere and a northward shift of the intertropical convergence zone over the Atlantic Ocean. The driving mechanism of climate responses is then investigated with the changes in the energy flows in the ocean and atmosphere. The large-scale atmospheric changes in the tropics are organized by an anomalous cross-equatorial Hadley circulation transporting energy southward and moisture and heat northward. Changes in the Indo-Pacific Ocean circulation and heat transport, driven by the wind stress associated with the abnormal Hadley cell, damp the atmospheric responses. The lack of Indo-Pacific transport and ocean heat storage leads to amplified atmospheric changes in the slab-ocean experiments, which are further amplified by a positive feedback due to the interhemispheric antisymmetric changes in low cloud cover. Eurasian spring snowmelt plays an important role in the subsequent climate and hydrological cycle, however, the understanding of snowmelt itself and its causes remains insufficient. This study explored the basic characteristics of spring snowmelt in the eastern Europe–western Siberia (EEWS) region by classifying snowmelt anomalies into two categories based on the different factors that dominate spring snowmelt, and then investigated the associated atmospheric circulation anomalies and local physical processes. The first category of anomalous snowmelt (category 1) is controlled by both the initial snow mass and the later snowmelt process, while the second category of anomalous snowmelt (category 2) is mainly linked to the later snowmelt process. Specifically, category 1 is characterized by an anomalous trough in EEWS in winter, where water vapor transported and converged, accompanied by anomalous upward motion, which promotes snowfall and snow accumulation, providing initial conditions conducive to snowmelt. In April, this region is controlled by an anomalous ridge, with significant warm advection anomalies and subsidence promoting surface warming, thereby accelerating snow melting. In contrast, the winter circulation anomalies are insignificant in category 2, while the anomalous ridge in April is stronger than in category 1, accompanied by more intense snowmelt processes. In addition, from the surface energy balance perspective, atmospheric downward sensible heat transport is an important factor influencing the anomalous snowmelt in category 1, while shortwave radiation plays a secondary role. Conversely, the snowmelt in category 2 is dominated by shortwave radiation forcing, but the sensible heat effect is slightly weaker. Significance Statement: Eurasian spring snowmelt significantly impacts the subsequent climate and hydrological cycle, but the understanding of snowmelt itself and its causes is still inadequate. The purpose of this study is to explore the monthly evolution of atmospheric circulation associated with anomalous snowmelt and its local physical processes associated by categorizing them based on snowmelt characteristics. Category 1 is jointly affected by winter snow accumulation and later warming, while category 2 is dominated by strong snowmelt process in late spring. The extreme precipitation (EP) in the early and late rainy seasons in Southern China is investigated from the perspective of moist static energy (MSE). At the synoptic time scale, the EP is accompanied by the charge–discharge paradigm of the vertically integrated MSE (hMSEi); the positive hMSEi anomaly reaches the peak one day before EP and decreases quickly during the event. The charge–discharge paradigm of hMSEi is dominated by the horizontal and vertical advection, respectively. However, synoptic systems responsible for the hMSEi charge in the early and late rainy seasons are different due to the different horizontal distributions of climatological MSE in the lower troposphere caused by the northward migration of solar radiation and the monsoon system. At the interannual time scale, more EP in the early (late) rainy season is associated with the higher seasonal-mean hMSEi that can be caused by the anomalous anticyclone (cyclone) in the western North Pacific induced by the SST anomalies in the tropical Indian Ocean and central North Pacific (the tropical Pacific). The multimodel ensemble mean of CMIP6 models reproduces well the observed hMSEi–EP relationship in both the historical and Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 5–8.5 (SSP5–8.5) runs. Moreover, the mean state of hMSEi increases in the SSP5–8.5 compared to historical runs along with more frequent occurrence of EP events. Recent studies suggest that the eddy kinetic energy is localized in the lee of significant topographic features in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). Here we explore the importance of the local dynamics quantitatively using the outputs from the realistic ocean general circulation model hindcast with the aid of the modified Lorentz energy cycle. Results confirm the importance of energy transfer among reservoirs in the downstream region of standing meanders, showing that the major five standing meanders are responsible for more than 70% of the kinetic energy transfer to eddies and dissipation over the Antarctic Circumpolar Current region. The eddy kinetic energy is generated in the upper 3000-m depth downstream of the standing meanders and transported due to the vertical energy redistribution governed by the vertical pressure flux toward the deeper layer where the eddy energy is dissipated. Moreover, we also calculate the work done by the Ekman transport to confirm that the wind energy input works as the dominant energy source for the baroclinic energy pathway. The advantage of this quantity against the vertical mean density flux is that it is independent of the reference states defined arbitrarily. It is shown that the westerlies can supply sufficient energy locally to initiate baroclinic instability in the Indian and Pacific sectors of the ACC, whereas the nonlocal process is important in the Atlantic sector. Our results suggest that the five narrow regions associated with significant topography play key roles in the energy balance of the ACC region. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to understand the eddy–mean flow interactions in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current from the energetic viewpoint. Our results show that the five narrow regions called "hotspots" in our study are responsible for the energy transfer from the mean flow to eddies. The atmospheric circulation response to global warming is an important problem that is theoretically still not well understood. This is a particular issue since climate model simulations provide uncertain, and at times contradictory, projections of future climate. In particular, it is still unclear how a warmer and moister atmosphere will affect midlatitude eddies and their associated poleward transport of heat and moisture. Here we perform a trend analysis of three main components of the global circulation}the zonal-mean state, eddies, and the net energy input into the atmosphere}and examine how they relate in terms of a moist static energy budget for the JRA-55 reanalysis data. A particular emphasis is made on understanding the contribution of moisture to circulation trends. The observed trends are very different between the hemispheres. In the Southern Hemisphere there is an overall strengthening and during boreal summer, also a poleward shifting, of the jet stream, the eddies, and the meridional diabatic heating gradients. Correspondingly, we find an overall strengthening of the meridional gradients of the net atmospheric energy input. In the Northern Hemisphere, the trend patterns are more complex, with the dominant signal being a clear boreal winter Arctic amplification of positive trends in lower-tropospheric temperature and moisture, as well as a significant weakening of both bandpass and low-pass eddy heat and moisture fluxes. Consistently, surface latent and sensible heat fluxes, upward and downward longwave radiation, and longwave cloud radiative fluxes at high latitudes show significant trends. We estimate ocean heat content (OHC) change in the upper 2000 m in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) from 1950 to 2020 to improve understanding of regional warming. Our estimates are based on 192 890 temperature profiles from the World Ocean Database. Warming occurs at all depths and in most regions except for a small region at northeastern GOM between 200 and 600 m. GOM OHC in the upper 2000 m increases at a rate of 0.38 ± 0.13 ZJ decade−1 between 1970 and 2020, which is equivalent to 1.21 ± 0.41 terawatts (TW). The GOM sea surface temperature (SST) increased ∼1.0° ± 0.25°C between 1970 and 2020, equivalent to a warming rate of 0.19° ± 0.05°C decade−1. Although SST in the GOM increases at a rate approximately twice that for the global ocean, the full-depth ocean heat storage rate in the GOM (0.86 ± 0.26 W m−2) applied to the entire GOM surface is comparable to that for the global ocean (0.82–1.11 W m−2). The upper-1000-m layer accounts for approximately 80%–90% of the total warming and variations in the upper 2000 m in the GOM. The Loop Current advective net heat flux is estimated to be 40.7 ± 6.3 TW through the GOM. A heat budget analysis shows the difference between the advective heat flux and the ocean heat storage rate (1.76 ± 1.36 TW, 1992–2017) can be roughly balanced with the annual net surface heat flux from ECCO (−37.9 TW). When quadrupling the atmospheric CO2 concentration in relation to preindustrial levels, most global climate models show an initially strong net radiative feedback that significantly reduces the energy imbalance during the first two decades after the quadrupling. Afterward, the net radiative feedback weakens, needing more surface warming than before to reduce the remaining energy imbalance. Such weakening radiative feedback has its origin in the tropical oceanic stratiform cloud cover, linked to an evolving spatial warming pattern. In the classic linearized energy balance framework, such variation is represented by an additional term in the planetary budget equation. This additional term is usually interpreted as an ad hoc emulation of the cloud feedback change, leaving unexplained the relationship between this term and the spatial warming pattern. I use a simple nonlinearized energy balance framework to justify that there is a physical interpretation of this term: the evolution of the spatial pattern of warming is explained by changes in the ocean's circulation and energy uptake. Therefore, the global effective thermal capacity of the system also changes, leading to the additional term. In reality, the clouds respond to what occurs in the ocean, changing their radiative effect. In the equation, the term is now a concrete representation of the ocean's role. Additionally, I derive for the first time an explicit mathematical expression of the net radiative feedback and its temporal evolution in the linearized energy balance framework. This mathematical expression supports the new proposed interpretation. As a corollary, it justifies the 20-yr time scale used to study the variation of the net radiative feedback. Significance Statement: Linearized energy balance models have helped the study of Earth's radiative response. However, the present linear models are at the edge of usefulness to get more insights. In this work, I justify that part of the nonlinearity in the radiative response can be explained without peculiar atmospheric radiative feedback mechanisms or a nonlinearity in the radiative response. Instead, the concept of an evolving thermal capacity recovers the ocean's role in redistributing the energy, changing the spatial warming pattern, and, finally, altering the atmospheric feedback mechanisms. This paper investigates the surface-layer processes associated with the morning transition from nighttime downslope winds to daytime upslope winds over a semi-isolated massif. It provides an insight into the characteristics of the transition and its connection with the processes controlling the erosion of the temperature inversion at the foot of the slope. First, a criterion for the identification of days prone to the development of purely thermally driven slope winds is proposed and adopted to select five representative case studies. Then, the mechanisms leading to different patterns of erosion of the nocturnal temperature inversion at the foot of the slope are analyzed. Three main patterns of erosion are identified: the first is connected to the growth of the convective boundary layer at the surface, the second is connected to the descent of the inversion top, and the third is a combination of the previous two. The first pattern is linked to the initiation of the morning transition through surface heating, and the second pattern is connected to the top-down dilution mechanism and so to mixing with the above air. The discriminating factor in the determination of the erosion pattern is identified in the partitioning of turbulent sensible heat flux at the surface. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to improve our understanding of the thermally driven slope circulations with a focus on the unsteady processes associated with the morning transition and the erosion patterns of the nocturnal temperature inversion, so far in the literature less investigated and understood than the evening transition. The boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO), which consists of a 10–30-day component and a 30–90-day component, is vigorous over the East Asian and the western North Pacific (WNP) monsoon regions where synoptic-scale eddies are also active. In this study, we systematically compare and diagnose the modulating effects of the 10–30- and 30–90-day BSISO modes on the development and maintenance of the WNP synoptic-scale eddies in terms of eddy energetics. During the developing phase of the synoptic eddies, the eddies tend to grow faster under the background conditions associated with the 10–30-day BSISO mode, compared with that associated with the 30–90-day mode, indicating the importance of the 10–30-day mode in eddy development. In contrast, the 30–90-day BSISO mode shows a larger contribution to the maintenance of the synoptic eddy intensity after the eddies reach their maximum amplitude. On the basis of the diagnoses of the eddy kinetic energy (EKE) budget equation, we find that the positive EKE advection induced by the 10–30-day flow is the leading process resulting in the increased EKE for eddy development. However, the 30–90-day circulation anomalies provide long-lasting favorable conditions (relative to those of the 10–30-day anomalies) to maintain the eddy intensity by generating a positive barotropic energy conversion from 30- to 90-day kinetic energy to EKE. These results not only advance our understanding of multiscale interactions over the WNP but also help toward better monitoring and prediction of synoptic-scale eddies, including tropical cyclones, using the background BSISO information. The low-level Somali jet is the primary mechanism of moisture transport for the South Asian monsoon. It precedes monsoon onset over India and shares its key characteristic features such as rapid intensification and slower retreat during seasonal evolution. This study analyzes the kinetic energy (KE) budget of Somali jet region using high-spatiotemporal-resolution reanalysis (ERA5) to explain these key features. The KE budget reveals that in the Southern Hemisphere, the easterly flow that ultimately feeds the jet exhibits a conventional Ekman balance, with KE generation balanced by frictional dissipation. A unique "advective balance"—balance between KE generation in the northward flow and its advection emerges as the jet begins to form near the equatorial region. The fully formed Somali jet exhibits a three-way balance between KE generation, its advection, and dissipation. A nondimensional parameter–boundary layer local Rossby number (Ro) characterizes the transitions across these regimes. The large-Ro regime describes an advective balance under which KE-generating meridional winds become proportional to meridional pressure gradients yielding a nonlinear (quadratic) dependence of KE generation on pressure gradients. This nonlinear relation explains rapid onset of the jet as well as the asymmetry between rapid onset and slower retreat, leading us to propose a simple model for approximating the seasonal evolution of kinetic energy in the Somali jet given the evolution of pressure gradients. In summary, this work shows that Somali jet onset is closely tied to the seasonal evolution of Ro in the region where the advective boundary layer appears. Significance Statement: The Somali jet is an important feature of the South Asian monsoon, contributing significantly to enhanced rainfall over the region. We study the dynamics of this jet by focusing on its kinetic energy (KE). Maintenance of the jet at different regions corresponds to different kinds of balances in the kinetic energy budget. A dimensionless parameter characterizes these different regimes of KE balance, which are captured at sufficiently high resolution. The rapid intensification of the jet can be explained as a nonlinear response of KE generation to the seasonal evolution of the north–south pressure gradient. To study the multiscale interactions between rotational and divergent components of atmospheric motion, a new formulation of spectral budget of rotational kinetic energy (RKE) and divergent kinetic energy (DKE) based on the primitive equations in the pressure coordinate is derived, with four main characteristics: 1) horizontal kinetic energy (HKE) spectral transfer is exactly divided into spectral transfer of RKE and DKE, 2) the exact spectral conversion term between DKE and RKE is constructed, 3) the Coriolis term is considered, and 4) both the baroclinic conversion from available potential energy (APE) and the vertical flux of HKE act only on DKE. With this new formulation, outputs from ERA5 global reanalysis are investigated. At planetary scales, HKE spectral transfer, mainly attributed to β effect, is dominated by downscale DKE transfer. At synoptic scales, it is dominated by an upscale transfer of RKE energized by conversion of DKE mainly due to the Coriolis effect. The ultimate source of DKE in the upper troposphere is conversion of APE, while in the stratosphere it is the vertical flux. At mesoscales, the spectral transfers of RKE and DKE are both downscale, and conversion from RKE to DKE exists at sub-800-km scales in the upper troposphere, which is mainly attributed to the contribution from relative vorticity. At different heights, the intersection scales of RKE and DKE spectra are affected by the scales of positive peaks of the local spectral conversion from DKE to RKE around total wavenumber 10. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to explore more physical insights on the dynamics underlying the atmospheric energy spectra from the perspective of rotational and divergent components of motion. We derive a new formulation of the spectral rotational and divergent kinetic energy budget in the pressure coordinate for the global atmosphere, with application to ERA5 global reanalysis. Our results reveal the differences of spectral energy budget between rotational and divergent motions at different heights and scales. This new formulation provides a good tool for revealing the multiscale cascade and interaction between atmospheric rotational and divergent motions. Energy exchanges between large-scale ocean currents and mesoscale eddies play an important role in setting the large-scale ocean circulation but are not fully captured in models. To better understand and quantify the ocean energy cycle, we apply along-isopycnal spatial filtering to output from an isopycnal 1/32° primitive equation model with idealized Atlantic and Southern Ocean geometry and topography. We diagnose the energy cycle in two frameworks: 1) a non-thickness-weighted framework, resulting in a Lorenz-like energy cycle, and 2) a thickness-weighted framework, resulting in the Bleck energy cycle. This paper shows that framework 2 is more useful for studying energy pathways when an isopycnal average is used. Next, we investigate the Bleck cycle as a function of filter scale. Baroclinic conversion generates mesoscale eddy kinetic energy over a wide range of scales and peaks near the deformation scale at high latitudes but below the deformation scale at low latitudes. Away from topography, an inverse cascade transfers kinetic energy from the mesoscales to larger scales. The upscale energy transfer peaks near the energy-containing scale at high latitudes but below the deformation scale at low latitudes. Regions downstream of topography are characterized by a downscale kinetic energy transfer, in which mesoscale eddies are generated through barotropic instability. The scale- and flow-dependent energy pathways diagnosed in this paper provide a basis for evaluating and developing scale- and flow-aware mesoscale eddy parameterizations. Significance Statement: Blowing winds provide a major energy source for the large-scale ocean circulation. A substantial fraction of this energy is converted to smaller-scale eddies, which swirl through the ocean as sea cyclones. Ocean turbulence causes these eddies to transfer part of their energy back to the large-scale ocean currents. This ocean energy cycle is not fully simulated in numerical models, but it plays an important role in transporting heat, carbon, and nutrients throughout the world's oceans. The dynamically adaptive WAVETRISK-OCEAN global model is used to solve one- and two-layer shallow water ocean models of wind-driven western boundary current (WBC) turbulence. When the submesoscale is resolved, both the one-layer simulation and the barotropic mode of the two-layer simulations have an energy spectrum with a power law of −3, while the baroclinic mode has a power law of −5/3 to −2 for a Munk boundary layer. This is consistent with the theoretical prediction for the power laws of the barotropic and baroclinic (buoyancy variance) cascades in surface quasigeostrophic turbulence. The baroclinic mode has about 20% of the energy of the barotropic mode in this case. When a Munk–Stommel boundary layer dominates, both the baroclinic and barotropic modes have a power law of −3. Local energy spectrum analysis reveals that the midlatitude and equatorial jets have different energy spectra and contribute differently to the global energy spectrum. We have therefore shown that adding a single baroclinic mode qualitatively changes WBC turbulence, introducing an energy spectrum component typical of what occurs in stratified three-dimensional ocean flows. This suggests that the first baroclinic mode may be primarily responsible for the submesoscale turbulence energy spectrum of the oceans. Adding more vertical layers, and therefore more baroclinic modes, could strengthen the first baroclinic mode, producing a dual cascade spectrum (−5/3, −3) or (−3, −5/3) similar to that predicted by quasigeostrophic and surface quasigeostrophic models, respectively. Significance Statement: This research investigates how wind energy is transferred from the largest ocean scales (thousands of kilometers) to the small turbulence scales (a few kilometers or less). We do this by using an idealized model that includes the simplest representation of density stratification. Our main finding is that this simple model captures an essential feature of the energy transfer process. A model for tropical cyclone (TC) potential size (PS), which is capable of predicting the equilibrium outer radius of a TC solely from environmental parameters, is proposed. The model combines an updated Carnot cycle model with a physical model for the wind profile, which serve as energetic and dynamic constraints, respectively, on the minimum pressure. Physically, the Carnot cycle model defines how much the surface pressure can be dropped energetically, and the wind profile model defines how large the steady-state storm needs to be to yield that pressure drop for a given maximum wind speed. The model yields an intrinsic length scale VCarnot/f, with f the Coriolis parameter, VCarnot similar to the potential intensity Vp, but without a dependence on the surface exchange coefficients of enthalpy Ck and momentum Cd. Analytic tests with the theory varying outflow temperature, sea surface temperature (SST), and f demonstrate that the model predictions are qualitatively consistent with the Vp/f scaling for outer size found in past work. The model also predicts a weak dependence of outer size on Cd, Ck, and horizontal mixing length lh of turbulence, consistent with numerical simulation results. Idealized numerical simulation experiments with varied tropopause temperature, SST, f, Cd, Ck, and lh show that the model performs well in predicting the simulated outer radius. The VCarnot/f scaling also better captures the dependence of simulated TC size on SST than Vp/f. The midlatitude poleward atmospheric energy transport increases in radiatively forced simulations of warmed climates across a range of models from comprehensive coupled general circulation models (GCMs) to idealized aquaplanet moist GCMs to diffusive moist energy balance models. These increases have been rationalized from two perspectives. The energetic (or radiative) perspective takes the atmospheric energy budget and decomposes energy flux changes (radiative forcing, feedbacks, or surface fluxes) to determine the energy transport changes required by the budget. The diffusive perspective takes the net effect of atmospheric macroturbulence to be a diffusive energy transport down-gradient, so transport changes can arise from changes in mean energy gradients or turbulent diffusivity. Here, we compare these perspectives in idealized moist, gray-radiation GCM simulations over a wide range of climates. The energetic perspective has a dominant role for radiative forcing in this GCM, with cancellation between the temperature feedback components that account for the GCM's nonmonotonic energy transport changes in response to warming. Comprehensive CMIP5 simulations have similarities in the Northern Hemisphere to the idealized GCM, although a comprehensive GCM over several CO2 doublings has a distinctly different feedback evolution structure. The diffusive perspective requires a non-constant diffusivity to account for the idealized GCM-simulated changes, with important roles for the eddy velocity, dry static stability, and horizontal energy gradients. Beyond diagnostic analysis, GCM-independent a priori theories for components of the temperature feedback are presented that account for changes without knowledge of a perturbed climate state, suggesting that the energetic perspective is the more parsimonious one. The vertical profile of clear-sky radiative cooling places important constraints on the vertical structure of convection and associated clouds. Simple theory using the cooling-to-space approximation is presented to indicate that the cooling rate in the upper troposphere should increase with surface temperature. The theory predicts how the cooling rate depends on lapse rate in an atmosphere where relative humidity remains approximately a fixed function of temperature. Radiative cooling rate is insensitive to relative humidity because of cancellation between the emission and transmission of radiation by water vapor. This theory is tested with one-dimensional radiative transfer calculations and radiative–convective equilibrium simulations. For climate simulations that produce an approximately moist adiabatic lapse rate, the radiative cooling profile becomes increasingly top-heavy with increasing surface temperature. If the temperature profile warms more slowly than a moist adiabatic profile in midtroposphere, then the cooling rate in the upper troposphere is reduced and that in the lower troposphere is increased. The diurnal variations of surface and air temperature are closely related, but their different responses to evaporative conditions can inform us about land–atmosphere interactions. Here, we evaluate the responses of the diurnal ranges in surface (ΔTs) and air (ΔTa) temperature to evaporative fraction at 160 FLUXNET sites and in the ERA5 reanalysis. We show that the sensitivity of ΔTs to evaporative fraction depends on vegetation type, whereas ΔTa does not. On days with low evaporative fraction, ΔTs in FLUXNET is enhanced by up to ∼20 K (∼30 K in ERA5) in short vegetation, but only by up to ∼10 K (∼10 K in ERA5) in forests. Note that ΔTa responds rather similarly to evaporative fraction irrespective of vegetation type (∼5 K in FLUXNET, ∼10 K in ERA5). We find a systematic bias in ERA5's ΔT response to evaporative conditions, showing a stronger sensitivity to evaporative fraction than in FLUXNET. We then demonstrate with a simple atmospheric boundary layer (SABL) model that the weak response of ΔTa to evaporative fraction can be explained by greater boundary layer growth under dry conditions, which increases the heat storage capacity and reduces the response of air temperature to evaporative fraction. Additionally, using a simplified surface energy balance (SSEB) model we show that ΔTs mainly responds to solar radiation, evaporative fraction, and aerodynamic conductance. We conclude that the dominant patterns of diurnal temperature variations can be explained by fundamental physical concepts, which should help us to better understand the main controls of land–atmosphere interactions. Significance Statement: Generally, air temperature is used more widely than the surface temperature, and often they are assumed to be equivalent. However, we show that their responses to changes in vegetation type and evaporative conditions are quite different. Using FLUXNET observations, ERA5 reanalysis, and two simple physical models, we found that these responses are much stronger in surface temperature, especially in short vegetation, and relatively weaker in air temperature. Despite being measured just 2 m above the surface, air temperature carries lesser imprints of evaporation and vegetation than the surface temperature because of boundary layer dynamics. These findings suggest the importance of coupled land–atmosphere processes in shaping surface and air temperature differently and provide insights on their distinctive responses to global changes. The main energy source for the intensification of a tropical cyclone (TC) is widely accepted to be the transfer of energy from the ocean to the atmosphere via surface fluxes. The pathway through which these surface fluxes lead to an increase in the kinetic energy of the cyclone has typically been interpreted either in terms of total potential energy or dry available potential energy (APE), or through the entropy-based heat engine viewpoint. Here, we use the local theory of APE to construct a budget of moist APE for an idealized axisymmetric simulation of a tropical cyclone. This is the first full budget of local moist APE budget for an atmospheric model. In the local moist APE framework, latent surface heat fluxes are the dominant generator of moist APE, which is then converted into kinetic energy via buoyancy fluxes. In the core region of the TC, the inward transport of APE by the secondary circulation is more important than its local production. The APE viewpoint describes spatially and temporally varying efficiencies; these may be useful in understanding how changes in efficiency influence TC development, and have a maximum that can be linked to the Carnot efficiency featuring in potential intensity theory. This paper examines the processes that drive Arctic anomalous surface warming and sea ice loss during winter-season tropospheric energy flux events, synoptic periods of increased tropospheric energy flux convergence (Ftrop), using the NASA MERRA-2 reanalysis. During an event, a poleward anomaly in Ftrop initially increases the sensible and latent energy of the Arctic troposphere; as the warm and moist troposphere loses heat, the anomalous energy source is balanced by a flux upward across the tropopause and a downward net surface flux. A new metric for the Arctic surface heating efficiency (Etrop) is defined, which measures the fraction of the energy source that reaches the surface. Composites of high-, medium-, and low-efficiency events help identify key physical factors, including the vertical structure of Ftrop and Arctic surface preconditioning. In high-efficiency events (Etrop ≥ 0.63), a bottom-heavy poleward Ftrop occurs in the presence of an anomalously warm and unstratified Arctic—a consequence of decreased sea ice—resulting in increased vertical mixing, enhanced near-surface warming and moistening, and further sea ice loss. Smaller Etrop, and thus weaker surface impacts, are found in events with anomalously large initial sea ice extent and more vertically uniform Ftrop. These differences in Etrop are manifested primarily through turbulent heat fluxes rather than downward longwave radiation. The frequency of high-efficiency events has increased from the period 1980–99 to the period 2000–19, contributing to Arctic surface warming and sea ice decline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Including the ocean surface current in the calculation of wind stress is known to damp mesoscale eddies through a negative wind power input and have potential ramifications for eddy longevity. Here, we study the spindown of a baroclinic anticyclonic eddy subject to absolute (no ocean surface current) and relative (including ocean surface current) wind stress forcing by employing an idealized high-resolution numerical model. Results from this study demonstrate that relative wind stress dissipates surface mean kinetic energy (MKE) and also generates additional vertical motions throughout the whole water column via Ekman pumping. Wind stress curl–induced Ekman pumping generates additional baroclinic conversion (mean potential to mean kinetic energy) that is found to offset the damping of surface MKE by increasing deep MKE. A scaling analysis of relative wind stress–induced baroclinic conversion and relative wind stress damping confirms these numerical findings, showing that additional energy conversion counteracts relative wind stress damping. What is more, wind stress curl–induced Ekman pumping is found to modify surface potential vorticity gradients that lead to an earlier destabilization of the eddy. Moist static energy (MSE) budgets and gross moist stability (GMS) have been widely used as a diagnostic tool to study the evolution of moisture and convection at different time scales. However, use of GMS is limited at shorter time scales because many points in the tropics have close-to-zero large-scale vertical motion at a given time. This is particularly true in the case of convective life cycles, which have been shown to exist with noise-like ubiquity throughout the tropics at intraseasonal time scales. This study proposes a novel phase angle–based framework as a process-level diagnostic tool to study the MSE budgets during these cycles. Using the GMS phase plane, a phase angle parameter is defined, which converts the unbound GMS into a finite ranged variable. The study finds that the convective life cycles are closely linked to evolution of moisture and effectively behave as moisture recharge–discharge cycles. Convective cycles in different datasets are studied using TOGA COARE, a mix of different satellite products and ERA-Interim. Analysis of the MSE budget reveals that the cyclic behavior is a result of transitions between wet and dry equilibrium states and is similar across different regions. Further, vertical and horizontal advection of MSE are found to act as the primary drivers behind this variability. In contrast, nonlinearities in the radiative and surface flux feedbacks are found to resist the convective evolution. A linearized model consistent with moisture mode dynamics is able to replicate the recharge–discharge cycle variability in TOGA COARE data. Significance Statement: In the tropics, variability of moisture and rainfall are closely linked to each other. Through this study we aim to better understand the evolution of moisture in observed daily time series data. We present a novel phase angle–based diagnostic tool to represent and study the energy budget of the system at this time resolution. Our results suggest that similar processes and mechanisms are relevant across different regions and at different scales in the tropics with moisture dynamics being important for these processes. The increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere create an increase in Earth's thermal energy, which is mainly stored in the ocean. Quantification of the rate of increase in ocean heat content (OHC) is vital for understanding the current and future climate of Earth. Linear trend lines have been frequently used to quantify long-term rates of change, but are inappropriate because they cannot capture nonlinearity in trends, have large start- and end-point sensitivity, and the assumption of linearity is nonphysical. Here observed and model-based linear regressions with higher-order polynomial (quadratic), piecewise linear, and locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (LOWESS) are compared. Piecewise linear and LOWESS perform best in depicting multidecadal trends. It is shown that linear rates are valid for up to about 15-yr segments (i.e., it is valid to compute linear rates within a 15-yr time window). Using the recommended methods, ocean warming for the upper 2000 m increases from about 0 to 0.06 ± 0.08 W m−2 for 1958–73 to 0.58 ± 0.08 W m−2 for 2003–18, indicating an acceleration of ocean warming that happens in all four ocean basins and from near the sea surface to 2000 m. There is consistency between multimodel-mean historically forced climate models and observations, which implies that the contribution of internal variability is small for global 0–2000 m OHC. Notable increases of OHC in the upper ocean (i.e., 0–300 m) after about 1980 and the deeper ocean (300–2000 m) after the late 1980s are also evident. This study suggests alternative methods to those currently used to estimate ocean warming rates to provide a more accurate quantification of long-term Earth's energy changes. Significance Statement: Quantifying long-term rates of change is needed to understand the time evolution of ocean warming and to assess the changing ocean and Earth's energy budgets. Recent estimates of the global warming rates suggest that approximately 9% of Earth's excess heat has been cumulated in the deep and abyssal oceans (below 2000-m depth) during the last two decades. Such estimates assume stationary trends deducted as long-term rates. To reassess the deep ocean warming and potentially shed light on its interannual variability, we formulate the balance between Earth's energy imbalance (EEI), the steric sea level, and the ocean heat content (OHC), at yearly time scales during the 2003–18 period, as a variational problem. The solution is achieved through variational minimization, merging observational data from top-of-atmosphere EEI, inferred from Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES), steric sea level estimates from altimetry minus gravimetry, and upper-ocean heat content estimates from in situ platforms (mostly Argo floats). Global ocean reanalyses provide background-error covariances for the OHC analysis. The analysis indicates a 2000-m–bottom warming of 0.08 ± 0.04 W m−2 for the period 2003–18, equal to 13% of the total ocean warming (0.62 ± 0.08 W m−2), slightly larger than previous estimates but consistent within the error bars. The analysis provides a fully consistent optimized solution also for the steric sea level and EEI. Moreover, the simultaneous use of the different heat budget observing networks is able to decrease the analysis uncertainty with respect to the observational one, for all observation types and especially for the 0–700-m OHC and steric sea level (more than 12% reduction). The sensitivity of the analysis to the choice of the background time series proved insignificant. Significance Statement: Several observing networks provide complementary information about the temporal evolution of the global energy budget. Here, satellite observations of Earth's energy imbalance (EEI) and steric sea level and in situ–derived estimates of ocean heat content anomalies are combined in a variational analysis framework, with the goal of assessing the deep ocean warming. The optimized solution accounts for the uncertainty of the different observing networks. Furthermore, it provides fully consistent analyses of global ocean heat content, steric sea level, and EEI, which show smaller uncertainty than the original observed time series. This study uses the ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis and observationally constrained top-of-the-atmosphere radiative fluxes to infer net surface energy fluxes covering 1985–2018, which can be further adjusted to match the observed mean land heat uptake. Various diagnostics are applied to provide error estimates of inferred fluxes on different spatial scales. For this purpose, adjusted as well as unadjusted inferred surface fluxes are compared with other commonly used flux products. On a regional scale, the oceanic energy budget of the North Atlantic between the RAPID array at 26.5°N and moorings located farther north (e.g., at the Greenland–Scotland Ridge) is evaluated. On the station scale, a comprehensive comparison of inferred and buoy-based fluxes is presented. Results indicate that global land and ocean averages of unadjusted inferred surface fluxes agree with the observed heat uptake to within 1 W m−2, while satellite-derived and model-based fluxes show large global mean biases. Furthermore, the oceanic energy budget of the North Atlantic is closed to within 2.7 (−0.2) W m−2 for the period 2005–09 when unadjusted (adjusted) inferred surface fluxes are employed. Indirect estimates of the 2004–16 mean oceanic heat transport at 26.5°N are 1.09 PW (1.17 PW with adjusted fluxes), which agrees well with observed RAPID transports. On the station scale, inferred fluxes exhibit a mean bias of −20.1 W m−2 when using buoy-based fluxes as reference, which confirms expectations that biases increase from global to local scales. However, buoy-based fluxes as reference are debatable, and are likely positively biased, suggesting that the station-scale bias of inferred fluxes is more likely on the order of −10 W m−2. Tropical climate response to greenhouse warming is to first order symmetric about the equator but climate models disagree on the degree of latitudinal asymmetry of the tropical change. Intermodel spread in equatorial asymmetry of tropical climate response is investigated by using 37 models from phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). In the simple simulation with CO2 increase at 1% per year but without aerosol forcing, this study finds that intermodel spread in tropical asymmetry is tied to that in the extratropical surface heat flux change related to the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and Southern Ocean sea ice concentration (SIC). AMOC or Southern Ocean SIC change alters net energy flux at the top of the atmosphere and sea surface in one hemisphere and may induce interhemispheric atmospheric energy transport. The negative feedback of the shallow meridional overturning circulation in the tropics and the positive low cloud feedback in the subtropics are also identified. During El Niño events, a strong tropics-wide warming of the free troposphere is observed (of order 1 K at 300 hPa). This warming plays an important role for the teleconnection processes associated with El Niño but it remains unclear what initiates this warming. Since convective quasi-equilibrium only holds in regions of deep convection, the strong free-tropospheric warming implies that the warmest surface waters (where atmospheric deep convection occurs) must warm during El Niño. We analyze the evolution of the oceanic mixed layer heat budget over El Niño events as function of sea surface temperature (SST). Data from the ERA5 and an unforced simulation of a coupled climate model both confirm that SSTs during an El Niño event increase at the high end of the SST distribution. The data show that this is due to an anomalous heat flux from the atmosphere into the ocean caused by a decrease in evaporation due anomalously weak lowlevel winds (i.e., relative to the wind speed observed in the domain of deep convection in the climatological base state). It is hypothesized that the more zonally symmetric circulation during El Niño is responsible for the weakening of low-level winds. The result of a substantial heat flux into the ocean in the domain of atmospheric deep convection (the opposite of the canonical heat flux out of the ocean into the atmosphere observed in the cold eastern Pacific) caused by a decrease in low-level wind speed implies that the prominent tropospheric warming results from mechanical forcing. For the Community Atmosphere Model version 6 (CAM6), an adjustment is needed to conserve dry air mass. This adjustment exposes an inconsistency in how CAM6's energy budget incorporates water—in CAM6 water in the vapor phase has energy, but condensed phases of water do not. When water vapor condenses, only its latent energy is retained in the model, while its remaining internal, potential, and kinetic energy are lost. A global fixer is used in the default CAM6 model to maintain global energy conservation, but locally the energy tendency associated with water changing phase violates the divergence theorem. This error in energy tendency is intrinsically tied to the water vapor tendency, and reaches its highest values in regions of heavy rainfall, where the error can be as high as 40 W m−2 annually averaged. Several possible changes are outlined within this manuscript that would allow CAM6 to satisfy the divergence theorem locally. These fall into one of two categories: 1) modifying the surface flux to balance the local atmospheric energy tendency and 2) modifying the local atmospheric tendency to balance the surface plus top-of-atmosphere energy fluxes. To gauge which aspects of the simulated climate are most sensitive to this error, the simplest possible change—where condensed water still does not carry energy and a local energy fixer is used in place of the global one—is implemented within CAM6. Comparing this experiment with the default configuration of CAM6 reveals precipitation, particularly its variability, to be highly sensitive to the energy budget formulation. Significance Statement: This study examines and explains spurious regional sources and sinks of energy in a widely used climate model. These energy errors result from not tracking energy associated with water after it transitions from the vapor phase to either liquid or ice. Instead, the model used a global fixer to offset the energy tendency related to the energy sources and sinks associated with condensed water species. We replace this global fixer with a local one to examine the model sensitivity to the regional energy error and find a large sensitivity in the simulated hydrologic cycle. This work suggests that the underlying thermodynamic assumptions in the model should be revisited to build confidence in the model-simulated regional-scale water and energy cycles. To overcome challenges with observing ocean heat content (OHC) over the entire ocean, we propose a novel approach that exploits the abundance of satellite data, including data from modern satellite geomagnetic surveys such as Swarm. The method considers a novel combination of conventional in situ (temperature and pressure) as well as satellite (altimetry and gravimetry) data with estimates of ocean electrical conductance (depth-integrated conductivity), which can potentially be obtained from magnetic observations (by satellite, land, seafloor, ocean, and airborne magnetometers). To demonstrate the potential benefit of the proposed method, we sample model output of an ocean state estimate to reflect existing observations and train a machine learning algorithm [Generalized Additive Model (GAM)] on these samples. We then calculate OHC everywhere using information potentially derivable from various global satellite coverage—including magnetic observations—to gauge the GAM's goodness of fit on a global scale. Inclusion of in situ observations of OHC in the upper 2000 m from Argo-like floats and conductance data each reduce the root-mean-square error by an order of magnitude. Retraining the GAM with recent ship-based hydrographic data attains a smaller RMSE in polar oceans than training the GAM only once on all available historical ship-based hydrographic data; the opposite is true elsewhere. The GAM more accurately calculates OHC anomalies throughout the water column than below 2000 m and can detect global OHC anomalies over multiyear time scales, even when considering hypothetical measurement errors. Our method could complement existing methods and its accuracy could be improved through careful ship-based campaign planning. Significance Statement: The purpose of this manuscript is to demonstrate the potential for practical implementation of a remote monitoring method for ocean heat content (OHC) anomalies. To do this, we sample data from a reanalysis product primarily because of the dearth of observations below 2000 m depth that can be used for validation and the fact that full-depth-integrated electrical seawater conductivity data products derived from satellite magnetometry are not yet available. We evaluate multiple factors related to the accuracy of OHC anomaly estimation and find that, even with hypothetical measurement errors, our method can be used to monitor OHC anomalies on multiyear time scales. Western boundary currents are hotspots of mesoscale variability and eddy–topography interactions, which channel energy toward smaller scales and eventually down to dissipation. Here, we assess the main mesoscale eddies energy sinks in the Agulhas Current region from a regional numerical simulation. We derive an eddy kinetic energy ( EKE ¯ ) budget in the framework of the vertical modes. It accounts for energy transfers between energy reservoirs and vertical modes, including transfers channeled by topography. The variability is dominated by mesoscale eddies (barotropic and first baroclinic modes) in the path of intense mean currents. Eddy–topography interactions result in a major mesoscale eddy energy sink, along three different energy routes, with comparable importance: transfers toward bottom-intensified time-mean currents, generation of higher baroclinic modes, and bottom friction. The generation of higher baroclinic modes takes different forms in the Northern Agulhas Current, where it corresponds to nonlinear transfers to smaller vertical eddies on the slope, and in the Southern Agulhas Current, where it is dominated by a (linear) generation of internal gravity waves over topography. Away from the shelf, mesoscale eddies gain energy by an inverse vertical turbulent cascade. However, the Agulhas Current region remains a net source of mesoscale eddy energy due to the strong generation of eddies, modulated by the topography, especially in the Southern Agulhas Current. It shows that the local generation of mesoscale eddies dominates the net EKE ¯ budget, contrary to the paradigm of mesoscale eddies decay upon western boundaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Energy balance and lapse rate regimes qualitatively characterize the low, middle, and high latitudes of Earth's modern climate. Currently we do not have a complete quantitative understanding of the spatiotemporal structure of energy balance regimes [e.g., radiative convective equilibrium (RCE) and radiative advective equilibrium (RAE)] and their connection to lapse rate regimes (moist adiabat and surface inversion). Here we use the vertically integrated moist static energy budget to define a nondimensional number that quantifies where and when RCE and RAE are approximately satisfied in Earth's modern climate. We find RCE exists year-round in the tropics and in the northern midlatitudes during summertime. RAE exists year-round over Antarctica and in the Arctic with the exception of early summer. We show that lapse rates in RCE and RAE are consistent with moist adiabatic and surface inversion lapse rates, respectively. We use idealized models (energy balance and aquaplanet) to test the following hypotheses: 1) RCE occurs during midlatitude summer for land-like (small heat capacity) surface conditions, and 2) sea ice is necessary for the existence of annual-mean RAE over a polar ocean, such as the Arctic. Consistent with point 1, an aquaplanet configured with a shallow mixed layer transitions to RCE in the midlatitudes during summertime whereas it does not for a deep mixed layer. Furthermore, we confirm point 2 using mechanism-denial aquaplanet experiments with and without thermodynamic sea ice. Finally, we show energy balance regimes of the modern climate provide a useful guide to the vertical structure of the warming response in the annual mean, and seasonally over the tropics and the southern high latitudes. The Namib Turbulence Experiment (NamTEX) was a multinational micrometeorological campaign conducted in the central Namib Desert to investigate three-dimensional surface layer turbulence and the spatiotemporal patterns of heat transfer between the subsurface, surface, and atmosphere. The Namib provides an ideal location for fundamental research that revisits some key assumptions in micrometeorology that are implicitly included in the parameterizations describing energy exchange in weather forecasting and climate models: homogenous flat surfaces, no vegetation, little moisture, and cloud-free skies create a strong and consistent diurnal forcing, resulting in a wide range of atmospheric stabilities. A novel combination of instruments was used to simultaneously measure variables and processes relevant to heat transfer: a 3-km fiber-optic distributed temperature sensor (DTS) was suspended in a pseudo-three-dimensional array within a 300 m × 300 m domain to provide vertical cross sections of air temperature fluctuations. Aerial and ground-based thermal imagers recorded high-resolution surface temperature fluctuations within the domain and revealed the spatial thermal imprint of atmospheric structures responsible for heat exchange. High-resolution soil temperature and moisture profiles together with heat flux plates provided information on near-surface soil dynamics. Turbulent heat exchange was measured with a vertical array of five eddy-covariance point measurements on a 21-m mast, as well as by collocated small- and large-aperture scintillometers. This contribution first details the scientific goals and experimental setup of the NamTEX campaign. Then, using a typical day, we demonstrate (i) the coupling of surface layer, surface, and soil temperatures using high-frequency temperature measurements, (ii) differences in spatial and temporal standard deviations of the horizontal temperature field using spatially distributed measurements, and (iii) horizontal anisotropy of the turbulent temperature field. Moist static energy (MSE) in the atmospheric boundary layer (BL) is one of the essential parameters determining convective activity over tropical oceanic areas. It is thus important to quantitatively understand BL MSE budget processes and their variability. Among these processes, only few studies have evaluated contributions of entrainment across the BL top and convective downdraft. This study aims to estimate these contributions by analyzing upper-air and surface meteorological observations obtained using research vessel Mirai over the tropical western Pacific in June 2008. Daily mean downward mass fluxes due to the two processes are calculated using BL dry static energy and moisture budget equations under the BL quasi-equilibrium approximation. Estimated mass fluxes are consistent with convective activity observed by a shipborne weather radar and a ceilometer. This study further examines how the mass fluxes and budget processes are modulated when a convectively active phase of boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation arrives at the observation area in the second half of the month. It is found that, while the contribution of the entrainment does not change significantly, the convective downdraft mass flux and the resultant BL MSE export increase 5 times and 3 times, respectively, in the convectively active period compared with those in the preactive period. Furthermore, ∼1/4 of the increase in the convective downdraft mass flux is attributable to the increase in MSE of convective downdraft air associated with midtropospheric moistening. Land–atmosphere interactions play an important role in the changes of extreme climates, especially in hot spots of land–atmosphere coupling. One of the linkages in land–atmosphere interactions is the coupling between air temperature and surface energy fluxes associated with soil moisture variability, vegetation change, and human water/land management. However, existing studies on the coupling between hot extreme and surface energy fluxes are mainly based on the parameterized solution of climate model, which might not dynamically reflect all changes in the surface energy partitioning due to the effects of vegetation physiological control and human water/land management. In this study, for the first time, we used daily weather observations to identify hot spots where the daily hot extreme (i.e., the 99th percentile of maximum temperature, Tq99th) rises faster than local mean temperature (Tmean) during 1975–2017. Furthermore, we analyzed the relationship between the trends in temperature hot extreme relative to local average (ΔTq99th/ΔTmean) and the trends in evaporative fraction (ΔEF), i.e., the ratio of latent heat flux to surface available energy, using long-term latent and sensible heat fluxes, which are informed by atmospheric boundary layer theory, machine learning, and ground-based observations of flux towers and weather stations. Hot spots of increase in ΔTq99th/ΔTmean are identified to be Europe, southwestern North America, northeast Asia, and southern Africa. The detected significant negative correlations between ΔEF and ΔTq99th/ΔTmean suggested that the hot spot regions are typically affected by annual/summer surface dryness. Our observation-driven findings have great implications in providing realistic observational evidence for the extreme climate change accelerated by surface energy partitioning. One of the proposed mechanisms to explain the multidecadal variability observed in sea surface temperature of the North Atlantic Ocean consists of a large-scale low-frequency internal mode spontaneously developing because of the large-scale baroclinic instability of the time-mean circulation. Even though this mode has been extensively studied in terms of the buoyancy variance budget, its energetic properties remain poorly known. Here we perform the full mechanical energy budget including available potential energy (APE) and kinetic energy (KE) of this internal mode and decompose the budget into three frequency bands: mean, low frequency (LF) associated with the large-scale mode, and high frequency (HF) associated with mesoscale eddy turbulence. This decomposition allows us to diagnose the energy fluxes between the different reservoirs and to understand the sources and sinks. Because of the large scale of the mode, most of its energy is contained in the APE. In our configuration, the only source of LF APE is the transfer from mean APE to LF APE that is attributed to the large-scale baroclinic instability. In return the sinks of LF APE are the parameterized diffusion, the flux toward HF APE, and, to a much lesser extent, the flux toward LF KE. The presence of an additional wind stress component weakens multidecadal oscillations and modifies the energy fluxes between the different energy reservoirs. The KE transfer appears to only have a minor influence on the multidecadal mode relative to the other energy sources involving APE, in all experiments. Storm-track activity over the North Pacific (NP) climatologically exhibits a clear minimum in midwinter, when the westerly jet speed sharply maximizes. This counterintuitive phenomenon, referred to as the "midwinter minimum (MWM)," has been investigated from various perspectives, but the mechanisms are still to be unrevealed. Toward better understanding of this phenomenon, the present study delineates the detailed seasonal evolution of climatological-mean Eulerian statistics and energetics of migratory eddies along the NP storm track over 60 years. As a comprehensive investigation of the mechanisms for the MWM, this study has revealed that the net eddy conversion/generation rate normalized by the eddy total energy, which is independent of eddy amplitude, is indeed reduced in midwinter. The reduction from early winter occurs mainly due to the decreased effectiveness of the baroclinic energy conversion through seasonally weakened temperature fluctuations and the resultant poleward eddy heat flux. The reduced net normalized conversion/generation rate in midwinter is also found to arise in part from the seasonally enhanced kinetic energy conversion from eddies into the strongly diffluent Pacific jet around its exit. The seasonality of the net energy influx also contributes especially to the spring recovery of the net normalized conversion/generation rate. The midwinter reduction in the normalized rates of both the net energy conversion/generation and baroclinic energy conversion was more pronounced in the period before the late 1980s, during which the MWM of the storm-track activity was climatologically more prominent. Several urban canopy models now incorporate urban vegetation to represent local urban cooling related to natural soil and plant evapotranspiration. Nevertheless, little is known about the realism of simulating these processes and turbulent exchanges within the urban canopy. Here, the coupled modeling of thermal and hydrological exchanges was investigated for a lawn located in an urban environment and for which soil temperature and water content measurements were available. The ISBA diffusive (ISBA-DF) surface–vegetation–atmosphere transfer model is inline coupled to the Town Energy Balance urban canopy model to model mixed urban environments. For the present case study, ISBA-DF was applied to the lawn and first evaluated in its default configuration. Particular attention was then paid to the parameterization of turbulent exchanges above the lawn and to the description of soil characteristics. The results highlighted the importance of taking into account local roughness related to surrounding obstacles for computing the turbulent exchanges over the lawn and simulating realistic surface and soil temperatures. The soil nature and texture vertical heterogeneity are also key properties for simulating the soil water content evolution and water exchanges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
