11. Zinc-pyrithione exerts diverse actions on human leukemia K562 cells : A preliminary study on hormetic action

Abstract

Zinc-pyrithione is widely used as a topical agent. It may be likely that zinc-pyrithione possesses unique cytotoxic action because zinc exerts diverse actions on process of cell death. In this study, we examined the cytotoxicity of zinc-pyrithione on human leukemia K562 cells in order to examine the possibility of hormetic action. Zinc-pyrithione at concentrations ranging from 0.3 μM to 3 μM induced diverse actions on K562 cells. The agent at 0.3 and 1 μM significantly inhibited spontaneous occurrence of cell death during 72 h incubation while it was not the case for 3 μM. Significant decrease in population of shrunken cells was observed when the concentrations of zinc-pyrithione were 0.3 and 1 μM. Cell growth was significantly inhibited by 1 and 3 μM zinc-pyrithione, but not by 0.3 μM. Although the inhibition of cell growth by zinc-pyrithione was concentration-dependent, the inhibition of spontaneous cell death was observed only at lower concentrations (0.3 and 1 μM) of zinc-pyrithione. Results suggest that zinc-pyrithione possesses diverse actions, including hormetic action, on proliferative cells.

Abstract

Aberrations on the short arm of chromosome 8 (8p) have been observed in various types of carcinoma including oral cancer. In this study, 47 samples of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) were examined in order to evaluate the role of 8p in the carcinogenesis of OSCC. By real-time quantitative RT-PCR analysis, mRNA expression of cathepsin B gene, mapped at 8p22, was investigated. Overexpression of mRNA expression of cathepsin B gene was revealed in OSCCs than normal tissues in 38 of 47 cases (80.9%). And values of mRNA were correlated to clinicopathological profiles; significant differences were found in differentiation (P=0.035), tumor size (P=0.006), regional neck metastasis (P=0.009) and TNM stage classification (P=0.001). The results imply that cathepsin B would play some roles in advance of OSCC and confirm the involvement of chromosome 8p22 region. The present study suggests that cathepsin B could be a target for molecular therapeutic approach.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify our live video transmission specifications in a real environment. We implemented a high-definition video transmitter that adjusts the video encoding rate according to the physical link status using a cross-layer rate control scheme. The transmitter will be used as reference equipment to practically evaluate the many simulated algorithms, because rate-control algorithms can be implemented in software regardless of the kind of physical layer. First, we explain the transmitter architecture, and then, report on our evaluation of the effectiveness of our cross-layer rate-control algorithm in comparison with a single application layer rate-control algorithm. We verified our algorithm can more quickly and accurately follow the link status than the single application layer rate-control algorithm using the implemented transmitter. Furthermore, we introduce an example in which the equipment can be easily used for other physical links because the reference equipment architecture abstracts the physical layer.

Abstract

Abstract: Oxidative reforming of methane was conducted at 650 C, 1MPa, and GHSV= 2,000,000Nml/(gh) using Ni/-Al2O3 catalyst. Dilution of catalyst bed with -Al2O3 prevented the formation of hot-spots in the catalyst bed. Element X (, P, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cd, Ce, Gd and Re) was added to Ni/-Al2O3, and the catalyst activities were experimentally observed to obtain training data of an artificial neural network (ANN). Then the physicochemical properties of element X and the observed values (CH4 conversion, H2 selectivity, or CO selectivity) of Ni–X/-Al2O3 catalyst were used for ANN training. After the training, the ANN was able to predict the catalytic performance of Ni–Z/-Al2O3 based on the physicochemical properties of element Z where Z is a possible additive other than X. In addition to La and Ce, Sc and Nd were predicted to promote the activity of Ni/-Al2O3. The experimentally observed activity of Ni–Sc/-Al2O3 was five times higher than that of unpromoted Ni/-Al2O3 catalyst. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the use of [18F]fiuorodeoxyglucose and positron emission tomography (FDG PETY for quantitative evaluation of glucose metabolism in skeletal muscle during walking. Ten young males underwent FDG PET twice during walks, which were done with or without an automated stride assistance system (SAS). Walk ratios were significantly increased by the SAS in seven subjects. Regional glucose metabolism in muscles between the crista iliaca and the planta was clearly visualized in all ten subjects. Glucose utilization increased significantly in the tibialis posterior and medial gastrocnemius muscles of the seven subjects in whom walk ratios were increased by the SAS. 44. Solvothermal Synthesis of ITO Nanoparticles Precisely Controlled in Size and Shape

Abstract

Highly crystalline cubic indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles with narrow size distribution were successfully prepared directly in one step from the mixed solution of indium and tin salts by the solvothermal method with lean ethylene glycol as a solvent. The addition of water must inhibit the formation of ITO crystals, but can strongly promote the formation of In(OH)3 and InOOH, including tin hydroxide. Since In(OH)3 and InOOH was not found in water-free EG system, the transformation of In(OH)3 and InOOH into In2O3 phase must be remarkably slow so that once formed indium hydroxides become final product in water-containing system. The as-prepared particles in BuOH as a solvent consist of irregular shaped nanoparticles of ITO and InOOH. In the solvothermal system with glycol as solvents, direct formation of ITO solid particles was observed starting from amorphous indium hydroxides, In(OH)3 and InOOH phases are not detected as intermediates. In addition, their size with the range from 15 to 40 nm was easily operated with changing conditions, such as aging period and sodium hydroxide concentration. X-ray diffraction measurement and high resolution transmission electron microscopic observation revealed that basically single-crystalline ITO nanoparticles were successfully obtained, and doped tin atoms were uniformly distributed in the nanoparticles.
