This poster was presented at the UCSB EEMB research symposium in 2024.Seed predation by granivores limits plant survival and recruitment of new germinates, especially of rare species limited by small populations and increasing pressure from nonnative invasives. The relationship between granivores and native flora at the Dune Protected Area in Callandar, CA is currently shifting away from historic patterns; Nipomo  mesa lupine (L. nipomensis) and other dune stabilizing plant species have been impacted by the habitat-wide colonization by the invasive perennial veldt grass (Ehrharta calycina). Current veldt management practices prevent the use of herbicide to control the grass within a 15-foot buffer of extant lupine populations. Understanding how dense stands of veldt grass may support increased populations of L. nipomensis seed predators can inform the management of veldt grass and the recovery of the endangered lupine. This study assessed seed predation through low profile boxes baited with L. nipomensis seeds and camera traps capturing both video and still images to compare seed predation rates relative to dense stands of veldt grass. Conservation implications were further assessed by considering the role of cages (fencing) in reducing seed predation.  We found that increased proximity to veldt grass modestly increased seed predation, and that uncaged bait stations lost the most seeds (~70% loss rates compared to ~15% in caged plots). The most common seed predators captured on camera were Heermann’s kangaroo rats, Dipodomys heermanni (found outside of cages and away from veldt grass), Deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus (found outside of cages and adjacent to veldt grass), and California towhees (found within cages and away from veldt grass). Our results establish patterns of seed predation consistent with predicted results and emphasize potential vulnerability to seed predation in areas near veldt or areas unprotected by caging.

Arenaria paludicola is a critically endangered California wetland plant. Only one original population exists at Oso Flaco Lake in San Luis Obispo County, in additionto some out plantings that have been established. Current knowledge of the idealhabitat and conditions for Arenaria paludicola is limited, making it difficult to identify sites that would be ideal for new out plantings to preserve the species.This study investigates the ability of Arenaria paludicola to grow in five soil types to evaluate the viability of a natural seep site located on UC Santa Barbara’scampus as a location for planting a new population. In addition, the seep waterwas used on two replicates of the experiment to determine if the water itself issuitable for Arenaria paludicola. The soils that showed the most growth over the course of the study were coarse commercial sand mixed with compost andpotting mix, with the campus loam showing no growth, and the heavy clay andfine sand soils native to the site showing the least growth and most death. Inaddition, the seep site plantings uniformly declined in health and died, showingthe seep water is unsuitable. From this we can conclude that Arenaria paludicola prefers coarser sand and potting mix to finer grained sandy soils and clays, andthat the seep site is unlikely to support a population of Arenaria paludicola.

The decline of swallowtail butterflies in forest habitats, which was not a significant concern about two decades ago, has now garnered attention worldwide, leading to their designation as globally endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. A recent study conducted in the north bank landscape (NBL) of river Brahmaputra, specifically under the Bodoland Territorial Region in India, has shed light on the remarkable diversity of swallowtail butterfly species in the area. The study documented a total of 35 species representing eight different genera. Notably, three species are endemic to northeastern India, and 12 enjoy federal protection. The findings suggest that the studied landscape plays a crucial role in supporting larval host plants and adult resources of swallowtail butterflies along with the other abiotic factors. These butterflies depend on 25 plant species from six families as essential food sources. Unfortunately, these host plants, valued for their traditional medicinal properties, are being overexploited. Urgent conservation measures are imperative to safeguard the habitats of swallowtail butterflies and other wildlife in the NBL under Bodoland Territorial Region, as they face significant threats from practices such as agriculture, illegal tree felling, forest fires, and cattle farming. Leadbeater's possums (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri) are a critically endangered marsupial found in a restricted area of cold, wet forest in South‐Eastern Australia. The majority of Leadbeater's possums inhabit highland forest, with one outlying lowland population. In 2012, a breeding program was established for the lowland Leadbeater's possums when this genetically distinct population faced imminent extinction. Successful reproduction by highland Leadbeater's possums in the international zoo‐based population between 1970 and 2010 led to the widespread belief that the species bred readily in captivity. Lowland possums have not bred in the 2012–2021 contemporary captive conservation breeding program. This study reviewed the historic captive‐breeding data and found that of the 84% (162/194) that reached reproductive maturity; 37% of males (n = 30) and 39.5% of females (n = 32) bred, and this success was highly skewed towards a subset of highly fecund individuals (14% of females and 15% of males produced 75% and 80% of all offspring). Although lack of reproductive output in the captive lowland animals could be explained if age at mortality was lower than that of highlands possums, comparison of the longevity of highland and lowland animals had no significant difference. Conservation objectives that specify how captive breeding may support in situ recovery of wild populations are integral to the success of captive programs. A lack of reflective analysis of past husbandry records allowed misconceptions of success and approaches implemented in the management of the breeding program, reducing the benefits for the conservation of this high profile threatened species. This case study provides a lesson for the management of conservation breeding programs and illustrates the importance of well‐defined conservation objectives, integration of in situ and ex situ strategies, and the importance of objective, systematic and timely analysis of available evidence to inform management objectives and improve conservation outcomes in real time. Societal Impact Statement Summary Unraveling the genetic intricacies and evolutionary history of Asian Hickories through advanced genome sequencing gives valuable insights into their ecological adaptations. Understanding the impact of historical dynamics, climate fluctuations, and geographical barriers on Asian hickories not only contributes to scientific knowledge but also empowers policymakers with evidence‐based decisions and guides conservationists in their efforts to protect vulnerable species. The identification of potential habitats, especially for the endangered Carya kweichowensis, offers a promising avenue for targeted conservation efforts, aligning with global initiatives to preserve Earth's precious biodiversity, but also ensures the conservation of a vital genetic reservoir for nut‐bearing economic tree species.Biogeographic characteristics of disjunct distribution play a vital role in plant geography and the endangered mechanism. The whole genome resequencing provides an opportunity to study the genetic relationship, population diffusion, and floristic evolution of disjunctive‐distribution flora. Based on the SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) data generated by the whole genome deep resequencing of five EA (Eastern Asian) Carya species, we constructed the phylogenetic tree, genetic structure, and species distribution modeling to clarify the phylogenetic relationships and to predict the potential distribution area of EA Carya. Phylogenetic analysis of Carya revealed two distinct clades, separating EA Carya from NA (North America) Carya. C. kweichowensis, an endangered species, showed the lowest nucleotide diversity and the earliest divergence among studied EA Carya species. Species distribution modeling predicted suitable habitats for five EA Carya species, revealing the potential distribution of endangered C. kweichowensis. Importantly, minimal spatial overlap was observed among distribution regions of EA Carya species during different time periods. The uneven regional distribution of EA Carya is believed to be a consequence of Quaternary climate fluctuations, mountain barriers hindering species dispersal, and the limited cold tolerance of these trees. EA Carya highlights the significant role of climate and geological changes in their regional distribution and migration routes in Asia. We present a reference genome for the federally endangered Gaviota tarplant, Deinandra increscens subsp. villosa (Madiinae, Asteraceae), an annual herb endemic to the Central California coast. Generating PacBio HiFi, Oxford Nanopore Technologies, and Dovetail Omni-C data, we assembled a haploid consensus genome of 1.67 Gb as 28.7 K scaffolds with a scaffold N50 of 74.9 Mb. We annotated repeat content in 74.8% of the genome. Long terminal repeats (LTRs) covered 44.0% of the genome with Copia families predominant at 22.9% followed by Gypsy at 14.2%. Both Gypsy and Copia elements were common in ancestral peaks of LTRs, and the most abundant element was a Gypsy element containing nested Copia/Angela sequence similarity, reflecting a complex evolutionary history of repeat activity. Gene annotation produced 33,257 genes and 68,942 transcripts, of which 99% were functionally annotated. BUSCO scores for the annotated proteins were 96.0% complete of which 77.6% was single copy and 18.4% duplicates. Whole genome duplication synonymous mutation rates of Gaviota tarplant and sunflower (Helianthus annuus) shared peaks that correspond to the last Asteraceae polyploidization event and subsequent divergence from a common ancestor at ∼27 MYA. Regions of high-density tandem genes were identified, pointing to potentially important loci of environmental adaptation in this species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Characterizing genetically distinct populations of primates is important for protecting biodiversity and effectively allocating conservation resources. Skywalker gibbons (Hoolock tianxing) were first described in 2017, with the only confirmed population consisting of 150 individuals in Mt. Gaoligong, Yunnan Province, China. Based on river geography, the distribution of the skywalker gibbon has been hypothesized to extend into Myanmar between the N'Mai Kha and Ayeyarwaddy Rivers to the west, and the Salween River (named the Thanlwin River in Myanmar and Nujiang River in China) to the east. We conducted acoustic point-count sampling surveys, collected noninvasive samples for molecular mitochondrial cytochrome b gene identification, and took photographs for morphological identification at six sites in Kachin State and three sites in Shan State to determine the presence of skywalker gibbons in predicted suitable forest areas in Myanmar. We also conducted 50 semistructured interviews with members of communities surrounding gibbon range forests to understand potential threats. In Kachin State, we audio-recorded 23 gibbon groups with group densities ranging between 0.57 and 3.6 group/km2. In Shan State, we audio-recorded 21 gibbon groups with group densities ranging between 0.134 and 1.0 group/km2. Based on genetic data obtained from skin and saliva samples, the gibbons were identified as skywalker gibbons (99.54–100% identity). Although these findings increase the species' known population size and confirmed distribution, skywalker gibbons in Myanmar are threatened by local habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation. Most of the skywalker gibbon population in Myanmar exists outside protected areas. Therefore, the IUCN Red List status of the skywalker gibbon should remain as Endangered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work presents an efficient one-step procedure for in vitro propagation in Angelica glauca using rhizome buds and production of secondary metabolites. A maximum of 94% of buds were established in vitro on medium supplemented with 0.3 mg/L Benzyl adenine (BA) and 0.1 mg/L Gibberellic acid (GA3). After the fifth sub-culture, the proliferating shoots from the rhizome buds displayed the maximum proliferation (1:15), rooted on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L BA and 0.2 mg/L α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). After being transferred to pots with soil:cocopeat (1:1) for hardening, shoots with enlarged rhizomes demonstrated 60% survival after a month in the polyhouse. For secondary metabolite production, callus was induced from in vivo roots on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L Kinetin (Kin) and 2.0 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) under dark incubation and after 1 year its suspension culture showed the existence of 206 compounds. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis results revealed that extracts predominantly contain compounds from different classes such as esters, ethers, and N-heterocyclic pyrrolo pyridazine, fatty acids and mono and sesquiterpenes with varying concentrations. On elicitation with 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mM Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) the callus cultures depicted varying concentration of monoterpene such as d-limonene, trans and cis-ligustilide, a marker compound of A. glauca essential oil, fatty acids and ethers. Sucrose treatment at 1, 3 and 5% revealed the presence of various unsaturated fatty acids, hydrocarbon, ethers, sesquiterpenes β-farnesene, α-copaene, and carotenoid rhodopin. Addition of growth regulators (2,4-D and Kin) revealed the presence of furfural and its derivatives, benzoic acids and esters.Key message: This study reports a one-step in vitro propagation methodology from rhizome buds of A. glauca Edgew., and synthesis of bioactive compounds of pharmaceutical importance from root callus cell suspension cultures. Cook Inlet beluga (CIB), Delphinapterus leucas, have not recovered from subsistence overharvest despite conservation efforts initiated in 2000. Reasons for this lack of recovery are still unclear with anthropogenic noise identified as a high threat in this population's recovery plan. Baseline information on CIB habitat use and soundscape characterization is crucial in evaluating impacts from anthropogenic activities. Using passive acoustic monitoring, we documented the seasonality and foraging occurrence of CIB, together with killer whale (Orcinus orca), harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) and humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), for one year in Chinitna and Tuxedni bays and rivers, two historically important but recently overlooked areas of their critical habitat in western lower Cook Inlet, Alaska. This area's ecological interest converges with planned mining, marine renewable energy, offshore oil and gas production, and commercial shipping. Results revealed higher presence of harbor porpoise, killer whale, and humpback whale in Chinitna compared to Tuxedni but much lower CIB presence. CIB were not detected in Chinitna Bay but were in the river on 21 days September-February and one day in June. However, CIB were never detected feeding in Chinitna River. CIB acoustic crypsis and preferential use of very shallow habitat in Chinitna revealed a perceived predation risk from killer whales. In contrast, CIB were recorded foraging in both Tuxedni Bay and River and were detected September-April on 127 days making it an important winter foraging ground. Low levels of anthropogenic noise disturbance were quantified in both bays making them some of the most undisturbed sections of their critical habitat, but at the same time highly sensitive to further noise disturbance. Commercial shipping was the main noise source likely causing acoustic disturbance to CIB due to communication masking despite current low levels of temporal overlap with beluga presence. We recommend that applicable regulators consider restricting high sound producing anthropogenic activities in and adjacent to Tuxedni Bay from September 1st to May 15th when CIB are actively using this area. Managing future anthropogenic activities to minimize habitat degradation and acoustic disturbance in this winter foraging refuge will be a key component to support the recovery of this endangered population. On February 27, 2018, a female smoothback angelshark, Squatina oculata, was incidentally captured in a gill-net fishery off the Mudanya coast (southeastern Sea of Marmara). An opportunistic photographic record confirmed the emergence of S. oculata in the Sea of Marmara, where its status in the area is considered questionable because of its absence for many years in the region. The current opportunistic records are valuable data sources, which can provide complementary information to fill the knowledge gaps in the life histories of rare, rarely caught, or endangered sharks and rays. Grassland alvar is a rare plant community that occurs throughout North America and northern Europe, and may require control of encroaching vegetation to be maintained or restored. We evaluated the hypothesis that restoration techniques used to restore the alvar ecosystem do not lead to declines in small mammal abundance. More specifically, we used a Before-After Control-Impact (BACI) design to compare how two methods of vegetation control, prescribed burns and mechanical removal, affected small mammal populations. The restoration was conducted beginning in 2019 on Pelee Island, Ontario, Canada. Live trapping of small mammals and associated vegetation sampling were conducted before and after on treatment and control locations. The only small mammal species to be caught during the study was the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque, 1818)), which had an observed decrease across all treatment sites and the control site. Generalized linear mixed effects models demonstrated that the main effects of treatment and year best explained mouse abundance at the site level. Interannual variability appeared to explain more variation in mouse abundance than treatment effects. Our study did not provide strong evidence that the vegetation control measures we employed might limit white-footed mouse abundance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Objective] The prediction of the habitat area of the endangered species Eupatorus gracilicornis was made to provide a theoretical basis for its protection. [Method\ Based on geographical distribution records and environmental variable data, 27 effective distribution points and 19 environmental factors were utilized, with the help of ArcGIS simulating the E. gracilicornis adaptive distribution areas in China of RCP2.6 and RCP8.5 under the current and future climate conditions (2050s, 2070s), MaxEnt model was used and the dominant environmental factors affecting the distribution were screened out. [Result] The MaxEnt model was used to repeat 10 operations for 19 environmental factors, and the calculated AUC value was 0.986, indicating that MaxEnt model had high accuracy. Six environmental factors were selected by the knife cutting method in MaxEnt model and analyzed. Finally the top four environmental variables affecting the potential geographical distribution were temperature seasonality (BIO4, 53.7%), precipitation of the warmest quarter (BIO18, 13.5%), annual precipitation (BIO12, 12.2%) and isothermality (BIO3, 11.8%). The top four contributing rates of the dominant environmental variables affecting the potential geographical distribution of E. gracilicornis were temperature seasonality (BIO4, 53.7%), precipitation in the hottest quarter (BIO18, 13.5%), annual precipitation (BIO12, 12.2%), and isothermality (BIO3, 11.8%). Under the current climatic conditions, the high suitable areas of E. gracilicornis were mainly located in the southern part of Yunnan province, the southern part of Xizhang Autonomous Region, and the central part of Taiwan province. Under the 2050 RCP2.6 and 2070 RCP8.5 emission scenarios, the area of the high suitable area increased slightly in parts of Taiwan, Yunnan and Xizhang, but decreased under the other emission scenarios. [Conclusion] Temperature seasonality, precipitation of warmest quarter, annual precipitation, isothermality, min temperature of coldest month, temperature annual range are the main environmental factors affecting the potential distribution of E. gracilicornis in China. The prediction results of the suitable habitat of E. gracilicornis are generally consistent with the actual distribution in China. However, due to habitat loss, fragmentation, degradation and habitat destruction, the actual suitable distribution area of E. gracilicornis will be further reduced and fragmented in the future, and the living environment of the endangered species of E. gracilicornis will not be optimistic. This article discusses the decline of parasitic freshwater mussel populations and the need for conservation methods, particularly captive breeding, to reintroduce and protect these species. The focus is on the Depressed River Mussel (Pseudanodonta complanata), which is classified as vulnerable. The article presents a novel method for the long-term housing and husbandry of P. complanata, inspired by an outdoor mesocosm system used in Virginia, USA. The method involves creating a lake-like ecosystem with natural food sources for the mussels, reducing the reliance on nutrient-rich water or expensive custom food mixtures. The article also highlights the successful reproduction of P. complanata in captivity using this method and suggests further research to test its scalability and potential for juvenile mussel production. This article aims to answer why the tiger dance in Kerinci Regency, Jambi Province, has not developed widely despite being preserved for more than 30 years and becoming a popular dance in Jambi Province. Qualitative research methods were used to carry out this study. In-depth interviews and uninvolved observation of the artists’ activities were used to collect the data. The analysis focused on the development of the tiger dance and the preservation discourse created by the artists and residents of Pulau Tengah Village. This study discovered that the extinct Ngagoah Imo ritual was transformed into the tiger dance. The “tiger man” myth, which the Kerinci people still hold dear, forms the basis of the tiger ritual and dance. Initially, the tiger dance was not sacred but was made sacred due to encouragement from various parties. Because of its uniqueness, the tiger dance soon became popular in Jambi and became a cure for the longing of the Kerinci people for the Ngagoah Imo ritual. Realizing the potential of tiger dance as an economic resource and as Kerinci’s regional identity, the artists then created a discourse of property rights over tiger dance. They prohibited other villagers from learning or imitating it. This discourse is slowly making tiger dance endangered because it is only controlled by a small group of artists. Such a discourse on cultural property rights needs to be straightened out. Apart from being contrary to the dynamic character of Malay culture, it is also contrary to various principles of cultural preservation.

The post mortem exam is important in diagnosing and investigating wildlife diseases. It is even more important to monitor the population of species that are not easily observed in the wild, such as otters. Of the 13 otter species, 11 are endangered due to many factors, such as climate change, pollution, or urbanisation. The authors present a review of the patterns of mortality of free-ranging otters worldwide, aiming to improve the knowledge of otter mortality and the role of mortality studies in their conservation. The main cause of death in aquatic otters is vehicle collision; hence, sea otter deaths are associated with shark attacks and imprisonment in fishing gear. It is possible to conclude that humans and human activity play a significant role in the mortality of these animals. In the future, a more standardised analysis of otter carcasses is necessary to understand their threats and diseases and design significant measures to protect these species.

During October 2022, enteric redmouth disease (ERM) affected Chinese sturgeons at a farm in Hubei, China, causing mass mortality. Affected fish exhibited characteristic red mouth and intestinal inflammation. Investigation led to isolation of a prominent bacterial strain, zhx1, from the internal organs and intestines of affected fish. Artificial infection experiments confirmed the role of zhx1 as the pathogen responsible for the deaths. The primary pathologic manifestations consisted of degeneration, necrosis, and inflammatory reactions, resulting in multiple organ dysfunction and death. Whole-genome sequencing of the bacteria identified zhx1 as Yersinia ruckeri, which possesses 135 drug-resistance genes and 443 virulence factor-related genes. Drug-susceptibility testing of zhx1 demonstrated high sensitivity to chloramphenicol and florfenicol but varying degrees of resistance to 18 other antimicrobial drugs. Identifying the pathogenic bacteria associated with ERM in Chinese sturgeons establishes a theoretical foundation for the effective prevention and control of this disease.

Humans are biased in their preferences for animals, and this may impact the composition of zoological collections. We assessed which kinds of animals the public and zoo professionals want to preserve in zoos for the future and analyzed these lists for previously identified biases and agreement across surveyed groups. We also characterized agreement among the surveyed groups on the roles of zoos and the composition of animal collections. We surveyed people who live in the United States, members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and AZA zoo and aquarium directors. There was agreement among surveyed groups on the roles of zoos, though some differences existed. Zoo professionals and the public generally agreed on the emphasis on various categories of animals for zoo collections, though some differences were noted. We found evidence of bias towards mammals, charismatic megafauna, and felids across all surveyed groups. Agreement was high between AZA members and directors and moderate between zoo professionals and the public. These results indicate that these groups are generally in agreement about the roles of zoos, how they should compose their animal collections, and what animal species, in particular, should be kept in zoos for the future, allowing zoos to compose their collections to maximize delivery on their mission goals as well as address the preferences of the public.

Betta rubra, classified as endangered fish species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), has been successfully bred and raised in captivity for two generations under laboratory conditions. This study aimed to provide comprehensive information on the captive breeding of B. rubra, focusing on various parameters crucial for ex-situ conservation and domestication. The research involved breeding trials, embryo and larvae observation, first feeding experiments, larva and fry rearing trials, and the evaluation of growth and reproduction in two generations. The study revealed that the female B. rubra, with an average total length of 5.17 ± 0.15 cm and weight of 1.61 ± 0.06 g, produced an average of 73.67 ± 7.09 eggs, 34.33 ± 5.13 total larvae, and exhibited a hatching rate of 46.67 ± 5.77%. The embryogenesis process commenced on the day of spawning (dps) and continued until the eggs hatched at 6 dps. Larvae development and yolk absorption occurred from 0 to 6 days post-hatching (dph).The study also examined the impact of different initial feeding options, with chopped Tubifex resulting in the most significant increase (p < 0.05) in length. The growth pattern of B. rubra larvae showed slow initial growth during the first seven days, followed by a rapid exponential growth phase from day 8 to day 39. Two generations of B. rubra (G1 and G2) were successfully bred in captivity, with G2 showing a better tendency for growth in length and weight compared to G1. Notably, there were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in reproductive success between the wild-origin broodstock (G0), G1, or G2. This research contributes valuable insights into the captive breeding of B. rubra and its early life stages, offering critical information for the conservation and sustainable management of this endangered species. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects of domestication on behavior, physiology, and phenotypic diversity.

These results indicate that these groups are generally in agreement about the roles of zoos, how they should compose their animal collections, and what animal species, in particular, should be kept in zoos for the future, allowing zoos to compose their collections to maximize delivery on their mission goals as well as address the preferences of the public. Primates are among the most threatened taxa globally, therefore, there is a need to estimate and monitor their populations. Kashmir Gray Langur Semnopithecus ajax is an endangered species for which there is no population estimate. We used double‐observer method to estimate its population size in the Kashmir region of North‐Western Himalaya. We walked 1284 km across 31 survey blocks spanning all three divisions of Kashmir viz., North, Central, and South Kashmir, covering an area of 411 km2. We counted a minimum of 1367 individual langurs from 27 groups. The detection probability for observer 1 (0.719) and observer 2 (0.656) resulted in a population estimate of 1496 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1367–1899) across 30 groups (with a mean group size of 51), giving a density estimate of 3.64 (3.33–4.62) langurs/km². We found double‐observer surveys to be suitable for the population estimation of langurs, and we make recommendations on how to effectively conduct primate surveys, especially in mountainous ecosystems. Our records extend the species distribution range beyond stated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Our findings also highlight that the Kashmir Himalaya is a stronghold of the species, where conservation efforts should focus. The post mortem exam is important in diagnosing and investigating wildlife diseases. It is even more important to monitor the population of species that are not easily observed in the wild, such as otters. Of the 13 otter species, 11 are endangered due to many factors, such as climate change, pollution, or urbanisation. The authors present a review of the patterns of mortality of free-ranging otters worldwide, aiming to improve the knowledge of otter mortality and the role of mortality studies in their conservation. The main cause of death in aquatic otters is vehicle collision; hence, sea otter deaths are associated with shark attacks and imprisonment in fishing gear. It is possible to conclude that humans and human activity play a significant role in the mortality of these animals. In the future, a more standardised analysis of otter carcasses is necessary to understand their threats and diseases and design significant measures to protect these species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, the potential to locate endangered animals using scent trained detection dogs (conservation detection dogs) has gained attention. Among vertebrates, conservation detection dogs have demonstrated a remarkable capacity to detect the scent of endangered mammals, reptiles, and birds, but their use in detecting amphibians is only beginning to be explored. A lack of work in this area is surprising given that amphibians are declining faster than any other vertebrate taxa. Moreover, amphibians are generally small, highly cryptic and breed in complex habitats, making them difficult to locate for the purpose of monitoring or establishing conservation breeding programs. This study aimed to provide a preliminary investigation into whether conservation detection dogs can be imprinted on the scent of the critically endangered Baw Baw frog (Philoria frosti) under captive conditions, and then effectively trained to locate wild frogs in their complex natural habitat. Two conservation detection dogs were trained to identify and locate P. frosti scent under controlled conditions before assessing their ability to locate wild P. frosti. Both conservation detection dogs were effective at locating P. frosti scent under controlled conditions, and also demonstrated an ability to detect live frogs under natural conditions. From an applied perspective, our findings provide new evidence that conservation detection dogs are capable of learning to detect the scent of small, cryptic anuran species. They also indicate that detection dogs are capable of locating frogs in highly complex forest habitat, confirming their untapped potential to aid in the management of imperiled species that have previously proven difficult to detect, monitor, and protect. Summary: In the synopsis of Casearia Jacq. in West and Central Africa (Breteler 2008), only a single, poor collection (Adam 3972), identified as C. prismatocarpa Mast., was recorded from the mountains of Guinea. More recently, some other flowering and fruiting specimens of Casearia have been collected from the same region as Adam's specimen and together they represent a new species. It is illustrated and named herein as Casearia septandra, its distribution is mapped and conservation status assessed as Endangered, according to the IUCN criteria. Attention to habitat dynamics in subtropical mid-mountain forest plant communities containing endangered vegetation is critical for understanding the responses of ecosystems to global climate change and for their effective conservation. This study examines the species composition, structure, and interspecies competition within endemic and endangered Abies ziyuanensis (Abies ziyuanensis L.K.Fu and S.L.Mo) communities in China, comparing undisturbed and anthropogenically disturbed conditions. The survey recorded a total of 71 plant species across 39 families and 60 genera. PERMANOVA analysis highlighted significant disparities in species composition between the two forest community conditions. Communities impacted by anthropogenic disturbances showed a higher diversity of shrub and herbaceous species compared to those that were undisturbed, coupled with a significant increase in the number of Abies ziyuanensis seedlings, suggesting a greater potential for self-renewal. Nonetheless, the distribution of diameter class structures in these two community conditions indicates a declining trend in population numbers. In undisturbed Abies ziyuanensis communities, the Weighted Hegyi Competition Index (WCI) for Abies ziyuanensis was 6.04, below the average WCI of 12.24 for all trees within these communities. In contrast, within communities affected by anthropogenic disturbances, the WCI for Abies ziyuanensis reached 7.76, higher than the average WCI of 7.43 for all trees, indicating that Abies ziyuanensis in disturbed communities face heightened competitive pressure compared to undisturbed settings. These findings underscore that previous anthropogenic disturbances have altered the community composition, competition dynamics, growth environment, and succession trends of Abies ziyuanensis communities. It is often supposed that valuable organisms are more valuable if they are rare. Likewise if they belong to endangered species. I consider what kinds of value rarity and endangerment can add in such cases. I argue that individual organisms of a valuable species typically have instrumental value as means to the end of preserving their species. This progenitive value, I suggest, tends to increase exponentially with rarity. Endlings, for their part, typically have little progenitive value; however, I argue that they may nonetheless have persistence value because, merely by existing, they postpone the numerical extinction of their species. Finally, I propose that a sentient endling can have higher lifeworld value than it would have had were it not the last of its kind. This, I argue, is because when a sentient endling dies, very little of its lifeworld is preserved – and this, I suggest, can be a bad thing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plant cryobanks play a significant role in modern science and breeding. They contribute to the recovery of lost species, the emergence of new plant varieties, and help preserve and explore the diversity of the plant world. The IPPRAS Cryobank collection is constantly supplemented with new samples, while, at the same time, the stored samples are being monitored. In order to test seed germination, seeds of Allium and Veratrum species were thawed. Rare Allium species seeds, such as A. nutans, A. schoenoprasum, and A. victorialis were stored in liquid nitrogen for 17, 19, and 30 years, respectively. Long-term cryopreservation decreased germination rates for A. nutans from 96.55 to 50.00%, for A. schoenoprasum from 72.00 to 62.75%, and for A. victorialis from 90.00 to 83.05%. Seeds of a rare medicinal species, Veratrum lobelianum, were stored in liquid nitrogen for 18 years; the seed germination rate during this storage period has been significantly decreased from 75.00 to 14.81%. V. nigrum seeds were also collected and frozen in liquid nitrogen for 3 days. Short-term cryopreservation did not result in a statistically significant change in germination rates (from 79.71 to 82.69%). The seeds of an endangered ornamental species, Cypripedium calceolus, were collected and kept frozen for 3 days. After cryopreservation, the seeds were planted on three different media, as follows: ½ MS, MS with 10% coconut milk, and BM1. On ½ MS medium, 24.98% seeds formed protocorms, while on MS medium with 10% coconut milk, this number was 10.02%, and on BM1 medium, it was 15.02%, respectively; however, after 2.5 months, all of the protocorms died. Thus, it appears that the existing protocol for seed cryopreservation of C. calceolus needs further improvement. The size, weight, and free water content (WC) of six previously cryopreserved Stipa species and three Allium species were measured. For all the Allium and Stipa species studied, we found no correlation between seed size, WC, and cryotolerance. Fragmentation isolates individuals and restricts access to valuable habitat with severe consequences for populations, such as reduced gene flow, disruption of recolonization dynamics, reduced resiliency to disturbance, and changes in aquatic community structure. Translocations to mitigate the effects of fragmentation and habitat loss are common, but few are rigorously evaluated, particularly for fishes. Over six years, we translocated 1215 individuals of four species of imperiled fish isolated below a barrier on the San Juan River, Utah, USA, that restricts access to upstream habitat. We used re‐encounter data (both passive integrated transponder tag and telemetry detections and physical recaptures) collected between 2016 and 2023, to inform a spatially explicit multistate mark–recapture model that estimated survival and transition probabilities of translocated and non‐translocated individuals, both below and above the barrier. Individuals of all four species moved large (>200 km) distances upstream following translocation, with the maximum upstream encounter distance varying by species. Results from the multistate mark–recapture model suggested translocated fish survived at a higher rate compared with non‐translocated fish below the barrier for three of the four species. Above the barrier, translocated individuals survived at similar rates as non‐translocated fish for bluehead sucker (Catostomus discobolus) and flannelmouth sucker (Catostomus latipinnis), while survival rates of translocated endangered Colorado pikeminnow (Ptychocheilus lucius; mean, 95% CI: 0.75, 0.55–0.88) and endangered razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus; 0.86, 0.75–0.92) were higher relative to non‐translocated individuals (Colorado pikeminnow: 0.52, 0.51–0.54; razorback sucker: 0.75, 0.74–0.75). Transition probabilities from above the barrier to below the barrier were generally low for three of the four species (all upper 95% CI ≤ 0.23), but they were substantially higher for razorback sucker. Our results suggest translocation to mitigate fragmentation and habitat loss can have demographic benefits for large‐river fish species by allowing movements necessary to complete their life history in heterogeneous riverscapes. Further, given the costs or delays in providing engineered fish passage structures or in achieving dam removal, we suggest translocations may provide an alternative conservation strategy in fragmented river systems. Disease monitoring of amphibian assurance populations is an important buffer against ongoing global extinctions. This study documents a high incidence of neoplasia in a zoo-managed assurance population of Puerto Rican crested toads (Peltophryne lemur ; PRCTs). Over 5 years, neoplasia was diagnosed in 17/49 (35%) submitted adult PRCTs and was the cause of death or euthanasia in 13/17 (72%). Most toads were male (16/17; 94%) and 6 to 11-years-old (average 8.1 years). Notably, seven toads (41%) had multiple neoplasms. Of the 29 neoplasms identified, 17 (59%) were cutaneous or subcutaneous. The most common neoplasms included mast cell tumors (MCTs; 8/29; 28%), histiocytic sarcomas (6/29; 21%), lymphoma/leukemia (4/29; 14%), and squamous cell carcinomas (3/29; 10%). Distant metastases were documented in 6/8 (75%) toads with MCTs. Causes for neoplasia in this population were not determined though may include genetic or environmental factors. Continued investigations of managed endangered amphibians will help elucidate mechanisms of carcinogenesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change poses a significant threat to endemic and endangered montane bird species with limited elevation and temperature ranges. Understanding their responses to changes in climate is essential for informing conservation actions. This study focused on the montane dwelling Yellow‐throated Apalis (Apalis flavigularis) in Malawi, aiming to identify key factors affecting its distribution and predicting its potential distribution under different climate change scenarios. Using an ensemble species distribution modeling approach, we found that the mean temperature of the driest quarter (Bio9), mean temperature of the wettest quarter (Bio8), and precipitation seasonality (Bio15) were the most important variables that influenced the distribution of this species. Across future climate scenarios, the species' geographic range declined where range losses varied from 57.74% (2050 RCP 6.0) to 82.88% (2070 RCP 6.0). We estimate its current range size to be 549 km2 which is lower than some previous estimates of its spatial distribution. Moreover, our projections indicate that under future climate scenarios, the species will shift to higher elevations with a large proportion of suitable areas located outside forests, posing challenges for adaptation. Our results suggest that the species may be under greater threat than previously thought; hence, urgent conservation actions are required. We recommend reinforcing the protection of areas predicted to remain suitable under future climate scenarios and the development of a species conservation action plan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Isoëtes changxingensis, a new species from Zhejiang Province, China, is illustrated and described here. The new species morphologically resembles I. baodongii, but it differs from the latter by 44 chromosomes, megaspore 317 - 411 μm(mean=360 μm) [vs. 22, 390 - 510 μm(mean=450 μm)]. It is also similar to I. longpingii in terms of megaspore size, with the difference that I. changxingensis rhizome corms 3-lobed, leaves 2 - 3 mm wide at middle, megaspore echinate-cristate(vs. 2-lobed, 1 mm, tuberculate-cristate). This species is distinguished from I. sinensis by its smaller megaspore, different surface ornamentation, and leaf blade 20 - 60 cm [vs. 340 - 450 μm(mean=409 μm), cristate, 15 - 30 cm]. Lack of ecological knowledge is a major challenge for effective conservation of threatened plant species in Australia as disturbance events, such as wildfire, increase in frequency and magnitude. Rapid on‐ground surveys are increasingly important to inform recovery strategies for rare and threatened plants in response to extreme wildfire events, yet resources are rarely available to deploy time‐sensitive surveys. Here, we utilize a rapid on‐ground survey and monitoring program to document basic biological and ecological information for 21 rare and threatened plant species from the New England bioregion in northern New South Wales, which were affected by the catastrophic 2019–2020 megafires. Our results fill an important knowledge gap of ecology, population size, distribution and response to fire for these taxa, document for the first time a species distribution pattern within the Torrington State Conservation Area and reveal previously undocumented plant–insect interactions for nine species, including likely pollination of Persoonia terminalis ssp. terminalis and Monotaxis macrophylla by native bee (Hymenoptera) and fly (Diptera) species. Our findings reveal that two species (Cassinia heleniae and Hakea macrorrhyncha) have scarce distribution and low population sizes, despite neither having a conservation listing and their threat status should be urgently assessed. Simple rapid on‐ground surveys can be more cost effective for delivering long‐term conservation outcomes for rare and threatened taxa and we advocate that future funding and prioritisation processes must support the immediate delivery of such surveys in response to disturbance events. The purpose of this study was to assess the endemism and conservation status of tree species present in the Perak Tengah freshwater swamp forest. A total of 150 plots (20 m × 20 m) were established in the study area using a random sampling design. Approximately 3,364 tree individuals with diameter at breast height (dbh) of 10.0 cm and above were enumerated in all plots. In the study area, 58 species identified are new to Perak, 72 tree species are listed as endemic, and 194 species are listed in the Red List of Threatened Species by IUCN. Thus, it is crucial to preserve the ecology and lessen the impact of threats in the Perak Tengah freshwater swamp forest, which is home to numerous endemic and endangered species.

Abstract Effective conservation of endangered species depends on knowledge of their distributions, but species detection can often be challenging. An example of this is provided by the Critically Endangered Margaret River burrowing crayfish (Engaewa pseudoreducta), which is highly cryptic. Due to the burrowing habit of this crayfish, detection of this species currently requires a great deal of effort, the results are often non‐conclusive, and, as it involves manual excavation of their burrows, the habitat of this and other species is destroyed in the detection process. In response to these challenges, this study developed and optimized a species‐specific probe‐based qPCR assay targeting the 16S gene region to detect the target species from environmental samples. Three test substrates—chimney pellets (soil expelled by a crayfish as it digs its burrow), burrow scrapes (soil lining the inside of a burrow), and burrow water (water that is filling the burrow space)—were tested from 11 crayfish burrows thought to have been constructed by the target species to see if eDNA could be detected. DNA from the target species was successfully amplified from both chimney pellets (6/11 samples) and burrow scrapes (3/11 samples); however, E. pseudoreducta was not detected in any water samples. As previously stated, sampling techniques to confirm the presence of this species have relied on burrow excavation (resulting in habitat destruction) and were often not definitive; therefore, replacing the traditional survey method with a noninvasive eDNA‐based technique could be of enormous benefit to the management and conservation of this (and similar) species.

The corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum Becc.) is an endemic flora of Indonesia that is naturally found only in Sumatra. The status of A. titanum is endangered because of several factors: deforestation, tuber exploitation, long flowering time, and protogyne. Until now, there has been no research about the population and distribution of A. titanum in West Sumatra. This study aimed to obtain information about the population and distribution of A. titanum in West Sumatra, so this research is essential to learn. The research used roaming and snowball sampling methods in Solok Selatan and Sijunjung Regencies in September-October 2022. The research was conducted by recording the coordinates where A. titanum was discovered, marked using GPS, and collecting morphological characteristics. The results showed that exploration in the Solok Selatan District found 19 corpse flower individuals (18 species of A. titanum and one species of A. gigas). In contrast, exploration in Sijunjung Regency managed to found 25 species of A. titanum. The corpse flowers found were in vegetative, dormant, flowering, and fruiting phases. The results help record the number and distribution of A.titanum in West Sumatra. The ex-situ conservation program will use germplasm as propagation material in the future.

Cook Inlet beluga (CIB), Delphinapterus leucas, have not recovered from subsistence overharvest despite conservation efforts initiated in 2000. Reasons for this lack of recovery are still unclear with anthropogenic noise identified as a high threat in this population’s recovery plan. Baseline information on CIB habitat use and soundscape characterization is crucial in evaluating impacts from anthropogenic activities. Using passive acoustic monitoring, we documented the seasonality and foraging occurrence of CIB, together with killer whale (Orcinus orca), harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) and humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), for one year in Chinitna and Tuxedni bays and rivers, two historically important but recently overlooked areas of their critical habitat in western lower Cook Inlet, Alaska. This area’s ecological interest converges with planned mining, marine renewable energy, offshore oil and gas production, and commercial shipping. Results revealed higher presence of harbor porpoise, killer whale, and humpback whale in Chinitna compared to Tuxedni but much lower CIB presence. CIB were not detected in Chinitna Bay but were in the river on 21 days September-February and one day in June. However, CIB were never detected feeding in Chinitna River. CIB acoustic crypsis and preferential use of very shallow habitat in Chinitna revealed a perceived predation risk from killer whales. In contrast, CIB were recorded foraging in both Tuxedni Bay and River and were detected September-April on 127 days making it an important winter foraging ground. Low levels of anthropogenic noise disturbance were quantified in both bays making them some of the most undisturbed sections of their critical habitat, but at the same time highly sensitive to further noise disturbance. Commercial shipping was the main noise source likely causing acoustic disturbance to CIB due to communication masking despite current low levels of temporal overlap with beluga presence. We recommend that applicable regulators consider restricting high sound producing anthropogenic activities in and adjacent to Tuxedni Bay from September 1st to May 15th when CIB are actively using this area. Managing future anthropogenic activities to minimize habitat degradation and acoustic disturbance in this winter foraging refuge will be a key component to support the recovery of this endangered population.

AbstractAmmodendron bifolium, a rare deciduous shrub, is the only species of Ammodendron (Fabaceae) in China, which distributes in Huocheng county, Xinjiang. This study employed high-throughput sequencing technology to assemble the complete chloroplast genome sequence of A. bifolium. The entire length of chloroplast genome is 154,426 bp. It comprises 128 genes, which include 85 protein-coding genes, 35 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The A. bifolium chloroplast genome has a GC content of 36.41%. Phylogenetic analysis strongly supported that A. bifolium is sister to the members of the Sophora genus. This study will provide the genetic information data for further phylogenetic studies of Ammodendron.

Abstract The Houston toad (Bufo [= Anaxyrus] houstonensis) is an endangered amphibian with a small geographic range. Land-use changes have primarily driven decline in B. houstonensis with population supplementation predominant among efforts to reduce its current extinction risk. However, there has been historic uncertainty regarding the evolutionary and conservation significance of B. houstonensis. To this end, we used 1170 genome-wide nuclear DNA markers to examine phylogenetic relationships between our focal taxon, representatives of the Nearctic B. americanus group, and B. nebulifer, a sympatric Middle American species. Phylogenetic analyses indicate B. houstonensis is a taxon that is distinct from B. americanus. We corroborated such genetic distinctiveness with an admixture analysis that provided support for recent reproductive isolation between B. americanus and B. houstonensis. However, ABBA-BABA tests for ancient admixture indicated historic gene flow between Nearctic species while no signal of historic gene flow was detected between Nearctic and Middle-American species. We used an admixture analysis to recognize four Management Units (MU) based on observed genetic differentiation within B. houstonensis and recommend captive propagation, population supplementation, and habitat restoration efforts specific to each MU. Our results re-affirm the evolutionary novelty of an endangered relict.

Araucaria angustifolia is a notable tree species distributed in the Atlantic forest of central-eastern South America. It has been considered a critically endangered species. Due to competition from other land uses, including agriculture and Pinus plantations, A. angustifolia has lost distribution and plantation area. This study aims to investigate new co-products of A. angustifolia waste products that can be used to prevent agricultural diseases. Brown spot is the most common foliar disease of soybeans and is caused by Septoria glycines. In this work, we evaluated the antifungal activity of plant tissue-derived compounds against S. glycines. The ethyl acetate extract of A. angustifolia leaves showed antifungal activity and was analyzed by HPLC-PDA and GC-MS. The results show two compounds as the principal constituents of antifungal activity. Both compounds showed a base peak at m/z 79.08, but they could not be identified by comparison with GC-MS spectral libraries. However, peaks at m/z 91 and 119 indicate that both compounds may contain aromatic structures. As a result of this study, we found that A. angustifolia can be used to obtain reliable antifungal compounds against S. glycines.

• Aquilegia fragrans is an endangered medicinal herb native to Himalaya. • Seeds exhibited non deep simple morphophysiological dormancy. • Time, temperature and pre-treatments significantly affected seed germination. • Best seed germination was observed at −10 °C for 30 days treated with zeatin 30 ppm. • Our study has broad implications in biodiversity conservation and restoration. Insufficient investigation of seed germination studies of threatened plant species creates practical obstacles to their conservation efforts. Here, we investigate the seed germination of Aquilegia fragrans Benth.-an endangered medicinal plant species native to Himalaya. The effects of stratification conditions including time (10, 20, 30, and 40 days), temperature (−4, −10, and −20 °C), and hormone treatments (250 ppm GA 3 , 30 ppm BAP, and 30 ppm Zeatin) on germination of A. fragrans seeds collected from the alpine belt of Kashmir Himalaya were examined. Seeds of species exhibited non-deep simple morphophysiological dormancy (MPD). Seed germination showed significant differences among the various treatments. It was observed that the application of GA 3 , zeatin, and BAP significantly improved seed germination as compared with the control. The highest germination percentage (73 ± 1 %) along with maximum germination index (1.05 ± 0.05) was recorded in T30 (Seeds stratified for 30 days at −10 °C and treatment with Zeatin 30 ppm) followed by T19 (seeds stratified at −10 °C for 20 days and treatment with zeatin 30 ppm). The seed germination studies of A. fragrans have not been carried out before, and the information gathered in the present study may prove useful for the conservation of the target plant species. As populations of large whales recover from whaling, species that forage and breed in coastal waters, including the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), increasingly overlap with human activities. This represents a potential hazard in locations worldwide subject to intensive vessel traffic, including New York, Panama City and Brisbane.Historically, humpback whales were not considered part of San Francisco Bay's fauna, except for a few 'lost' whales that wandered into the estuary.An unprecedented influx of humpback whales into highly urbanized San Francisco Bay began in 2016. Research efforts in 2016–2018 from vessels and shore resulted in 496 photo‐identification records plus 319 visual sightings. Sixty‐one individuals were photo‐identified, of which 80% (n = 49) used the bay on multiple days (range = 2 to 39), and 34% (n = 21) were resighted in successive years.Whales photographed in San Francisco Bay were found to belong to distinct population segments listed as endangered and threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.Whales moved in and out of the bay seasonally (April–November). Habitat use patterns indicated movements farther into San Francisco Bay correlated positively with high tides.Humpback whales were visually observed lunge feeding on northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) at the surface. Analysis of dive patterns by three tagged whales confirmed subsurface feeding when surface feeding was not apparent.The use of San Francisco Bay and adjacent waters by recovering populations of humpback whales exacerbates the potential for collisions with vessels, entanglement in fishing gear, and harassment by recreational vessels. The present study was undertaken in order to assess the current status of ichthyofaunal diversity of one of Asia's largest freshwater lakes -- Wular, India. In this study the sampling was carried out every month at 5 different sites of Wular Lake which were selected on the basis of different ecological niches. A total of 738 fish species were collected during the entire study. The ichthyofaunal biodiversity observed in this study belonged to 2 orders, 2 families, 4 sub families and 6 genera. The carps viz. Cyprinus carpio (var. communis), Cyprinus carpio (var. specularis) and Carassius carassius contributed more than 82.52 % to the total catch by biomass and 50.79 % to the total catch by number. Shannon-Wiener diversity index showed maximum value (1.476) during summer and minimum value (1.195) during autumn. Similarly, Pielou's Evenness index and Simpson's dominance index also showed maximum values (0.856 and 0.645) in summer and minimum values (0.738 and 0.438) in autumn respectively. The study revealed that there was a drastic decline in the native Schizothorax due to encroachment, pollution and other anthropogenic disturbances. Many fish species that had been reported in the lake in the earlier studies were not reported in this study, indicating their disappearance from the lake. Keeping in view the progressively worse situation, there is an urgent need to take remedial steps to conserve the endangered native fish fauna of the lake in order to preserve its biodiversity from further degradation. Ammodendron bifolium, a rare deciduous shrub, is the only species of Ammodendron (Fabaceae) in China, which distributes in Huocheng county, Xinjiang. This study employed high-throughput sequencing technology to assemble the complete chloroplast genome sequence of A. bifolium. The entire length of chloroplast genome is 154,426 bp. It comprises 128 genes, which include 85 protein-coding genes, 35 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The A. bifolium chloroplast genome has a GC content of 36.41%. Phylogenetic analysis strongly supported that A. bifolium is sister to the members of the Sophora genus. The Houston toad (Bufo [= Anaxyrus] houstonensis) is an endangered amphibian with a small geographic range. Land-use changes have primarily driven decline in B. houstonensis with population supplementation predominant among efforts to reduce its current extinction risk. However, there has been historic uncertainty regarding the evolutionary and conservation significance of B. houstonensis. To this end, we used 1170 genome-wide nuclear DNA markers to examine phylogenetic relationships between our focal taxon, representatives of the Nearctic B. americanus group, and B. nebulifer, a sympatric Middle American species. Phylogenetic analyses indicate B. houstonensis is a taxon that is distinct from B. americanus. We corroborated such genetic distinctiveness with an admixture analysis that provided support for recent reproductive isolation between B. americanus and B. houstonensis. However, ABBA-BABA tests for ancient admixture indicated historic gene flow between Nearctic species while no signal of historic gene flow was detected between Nearctic and Middle-American species. We used an admixture analysis to recognize four Management Units (MU) based on observed genetic differentiation within B. houstonensis and recommend captive propagation, population supplementation, and habitat restoration efforts specific to each MU. Complexity of addressing cumulative effects that vary in space and time, especially for species occupying large ranges, makes conservation and recovery of populations difficult. In Alberta, declines of all three native stream trout species led to them being listed as species at risk. We developed a novel, semi‐quantitative cumulative effects modelling process to quantify threats using stressor‐response curves with a single common response scale, wherein inputs were determined for each population, and outputs were used to create population‐specific recovery action hypotheses to inform management. Using a case study of bull trout recovery in Rocky Creek, Alberta, we tested these hypotheses using a before–after control‐impacted design. Recovery actions positively affected bull trout, and the modelling approach provided insight into threats (sedimentation and angling effort) that most likely limited the population. Iridoid glycosides are monoterpenoids synthesized in several plant species known to exhibit a diverse range of pharmacological activities. They are used as important bioactive ingredients in many commercially available drug formulations and as lead compounds in pharmaceutical research. The genus Picrorhiza comprises two medicinally important herbs endemic to the Himalayan region viz. Picrorhiza kurrooa Royle and Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora Hong. The medicinal properties of these two species are mainly due to iridoid glycosides present in their root, rhizome, and leaves. Unregulated harvesting from the wild, habitat specificity, narrow distribution range, small population size and lack of organized cultivation led to the enrolling of these species in the endangered category by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). Therefore, there is a need for immediate biotechnological and molecular interventions. Such intercessions will open up new vistas for large-scale propagation, development of genomic/transcriptomic resources for understanding the biosynthetic pathway, the possibility of genetic/metabolic manipulations, and possible commercialization of iridoid glycosides. The current review article elucidates the phytochemistry and pharmacological importance of iridoid glycosides from the genus Picrorhiza. In addition, the role of biotechnological approaches and opportunities offered by next-generation sequencing technologies in overcoming challenges associated with the genetic engineering of these species are also discussed.
