Purpose: In recent years a sub-group of minimalist runners have emerged who aim to perform physical exercise more naturally in an attempt to reduce running-related injuries. Here we aimed to determine the effect that running with minimalist footwear in a prolonged run has on foot-impact accelerations. Method: Seventeen runners ran with minimalist and conventional shoes (MS and CS, respectively) in two separate sessions; the participants had experience with both footwear types. We measured the length and frequency of each stride, as well as the tibial and head impact acceleration every 5 minutes during a prolonged run (30 minutes at 80% of each individual's maximum aerobic speed). Results: There were significant differences in the acceleration rate in the tibia (CS: 516.1 ± 238.47 G/s and MS: 786.6 ± 238.45 G/s; p = 0.009) and head (CS: 73.3 ± 23.65 G/s and MS: 120.7 ± 44.13 G/s; p = 0.000). Our data indicate that the type of footwear increased the stride frequency and decreased length and that the impact acceleration is increased with MS compared to CS (p < 0.05 in both cases). However, the effect of prolonged run was not significantly different between CS and MS (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The peak tibia acceleration and headtibia acceleration rate indicate that the use of MS may be related to a higher risk of injury. These differences remained independently of the runners' fatigue state.

The First-Person Shooter is a very popular genre in electronic sports (esports), where there are different aiming techniques such as Aim Flicking and Aim Tracking. Although the mouse grip is suggested as one of the most important factors in gaming performance, there is a lack of evidence on this topic. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to determine the performances of three types of mouse grips (palm grip, claw grip, and fingertip grip) in two different tasks (flicking and tracking tasks) by analyzing kinematic and scoring variables. Twenty-two participants performed the tasks on a computer with the same monitor and mouse, each using their preferred grip: palm grip, claw grip, and fingertip grip. The aim400kg was used to perform the tasks, and a camera system (Optitrack's Flex 3) was used to capture the mouse movement. The results from the flicking task indicated significant differences in the minimum cursor trajectory, with higher values observed in the claw grip compared to both the palm and fingertip grips. However, no significant differences were observed in the tracking task in terms of velocity, acceleration, or hand movement. Moreover, only high correlations were observed in the flicking task between Score and Reaction Time (r = −0.911) and between Score and Total Distance (r = 0.724). In conclusion, the mouse grip does not affect the Aim Flicking or Aim Tracking task performance. The purpose of this study was to determine if curved non-motorized treadmills can reproduce overground running better than motorized treadmills by analysing the differences in joint kinematics (hip, knee, and ankle) using SPM. Nineteen recreational runners completed three randomized running tests on these surfaces. Kinematic data from the hip, knee, and ankle joints were collected. Two-tailed SPM t-tests were performed to analyse time-continuous gait cycles in three anatomical planes of each joint. Higher within-subject variability was observed in the frontal and transverse planes during curved non-motorized treadmill running. SPM analysis showed more significant differences (p < 0.05) between curved non-motorized treadmill and overground than between motorized treadmill and overground, mainly in knee (from 12% to 30% and 93% to 99% of the gait cycle) and ankle (from 19% to 23% of the gait cycle) in the sagittal plane. Therefore, running on curved non-motorized treadmills is more biomechanically different compared to overground than motorized treadmills, and might not be the best strategy to replicate overground running in terms of joint kinematics during highly controlled research studies. However, they could be an interesting tool in rehabilitation or training environments since the changes observed in joint kinematics were likely not functionally relevant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim was to analyse the relationship between isokinetic strength, dynamic stability, muscular extensibility and impacts transmission during fatigued running. Low- and high-frequency impacts—related to body movements and the severity of impacts, respectively—were assessed in 17 male recreational runners, before and after a treadmill running fatigue protocol, using a triaxial accelerometry system. High-frequency impacts in the tibia were negatively correlated to the knee angle at which the quadriceps peak torque was reached (p = 0.014), and also to the extensibility of the hamstrings and soleus (p = 0.001 and p = 0.023, respectively). The increases of high-frequency impacts in tibia caused by fatigue were positively related to the knee angle at which the hamstrings peak torque was reached (p = 0.001) and to stability after landing (p = 0.007). The attenuation of high-frequency impacts was positively related to hamstrings/quadriceps ratio of strength (p = 0.010) and to stability (p = 0.006). Limiting possible deficits in hamstring and soleus range of motion, improving stability after landing, developing hamstring and quadriceps strength in elongated muscle range, and maintaining a balanced ratio of hamstring/quadriceps strength could help to reduce the injury risk in running. The response of female cyclists depending on the functional test duration has not been studied. This study aims to analyse the effect of modification of the duration of two different functional tests: Wingate (WAnT) and Functional Power Threshold (FTP) in female cyclists. Fourteen cyclists (27±8 years, 1,66±0,08 m, and 60,6±7,2 kg) performed 2 test days with a 24-hour break between days, varying the test duration (WAnT 20- or 30-sec, and FTP 8- or 10-min). Relative power output, cadence, heart rate, local oxygen saturation, lactate, and rating of perceived exertion were measured in each test. Time duration did not affect the power output outcomes in both tests (p>0,05). However, WAnT of 20 sec, compared with the test of 30 sec, resulted in a lower cadence decrease in the last 5 sec (p<0,01, ES=1,3), lower heart rate variables (peak, average and variation; p<0,01, ES>0,5), and higher execution inclination of local oxygen saturation (p<0,05 and ES=1,0). In conclusion, the time variations assessed do not alters power outcomes in female cyclists. However, higher acute fatigue can be observed in the WAnT of 30 sec, which suggests the use of the test of 20 sec to allow continue training afterwards. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to analyze the differences between clusters obtained by the acute fatigue effect following an ultra-endurance event on the internal and external load of cyclists. 26 volunteers participated in the study, divided into the experimental group (N = 18; height: 177 ± 8 cm; body mass: 78.6 ± 10.3 kg) and the control group (N = 8; height: 176 ± 10 cm; body mass: 78.0 ± 15.7 kg). The experimental group completed a 12 h non-stop cycling event. Jump height, lactate, plasma antioxidant capacity, pain perception and fatigue perception were measured before and after the event. Cyclists of the experimental group were classified taking into account their training characteristics (recreational vs. competitive) and conducting non-supervised Kmeans clustering. The differentiation of cyclists according to training characteristics resulted in a lower distance covered by recreational cyclists than competitive cyclists (279.4 ± 39.7 km vs. 371.0 ± 71.7 km; ES = 0.8; p < 0.01), although no differences were observed in the other variables between groups (p > 0.05). The clustering analysis resulted in two clusters. Cluster 2 suffered a greater jump height decrease (-3.3 ± 1.6 vs. 1.2 ± 0.8; ES = 0.8; p < 0.001) and increased pain and fatigue perception (ES = 0.5; p < 0.05) after the race than Cluster 1. In conclusion, countermovement jump and fatigue/pain perception can differentiate the fatigue produced by a cycling ultra-endurance event and therefore, these non-invasive measurements are useful in fatigue monitoring and recovery planning. Purpose: To investigate the effects of two different running footwear conditions (transition to minimalist footwear and conventional running footwear) on dynamic postural stability before and after 7 weeks of gait retraining program, and to evaluate the effect of fatigue on dynamic stability. Method: This randomized controlled clinical trial was carried out by 42 recreational male runners, who were randomly divided into two groups; Conventional Footwear Group (CFG) (n = 22) and Minimalist Footwear Group (MFG) (n = 20). Dynamic Postural Stability Index (DPSI), in a fatigued and non-fatigued state, were assessed before and after a gait retraining program. The gait retraining program consisted of three guided training sessions per week for 7 weeks. Training program was mainly focused on running technique and submaximal aerobic training with step-frequency exercises. Minimalist footwear was progressively introduced in the MFG. The CFG and MFG performed the same training exercises and a full body conditioning program. Fatigue was induced using a 30-minute running test at individual 85% of the maximal aerobic speed. Results: No differences in dynamic stability variables were found between MFG and CFG in any of the study condition. MFG and CFG showed better dynamic stability after the intervention program (CFG: 13.1% of change, DPSIpre = 0.3221 ± 0.04, DPSIpost = 0.2799 ± 0.04; p <.05; MFG: 6.7% of change, DPSIpre = 0.3117 ± 0.04, DPSIpost = 0.2907 ± 0.05). Finally, dynamic stability was significatively lower in both groups after fatigue protocol (p <.05). Conclusions: Following a 7-week gait retraining program, footwear did not affect the results, being the gait retraining program more relevant on improving dynamic stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
