Advanced manufacturing industries use technology to improve products and/or processes. The advanced manufacturing cluster contains 18 industries: support activities for mining; petroleum and coal products manufacturing; plastics products manufacturing; glass and glass product manufacturing; other nonmetallic mineral product manufacturing; iron and steel mills and ferroalloy manufacturing; steel product manufacturing; from processed steel; nonferrous metal (except aluminum) production and processing; foundries; forging and stamping; boiler, tank, and shipping container manufacturing; machine shops, turned product, and screw, nut and bolt manufacturing; other fabricated metal product manufacturing; industrial machinery manufacturing; other general purpose machinery manufacturing; electric lighting equipment manufacturing; household appliance manufacturing; and electrical equipment manufacturing. In 2016, the advanced manufacturing cluster made up 4.5 percent of Ohio's total private employment.

The financial services cluster includes business establishments engaged in financial transactions and/or facilitating financial transactions. Financial transactions involve the creation, liquidation or change in ownership of financial asset. The financial services cluster covers nine industries: depository credit intermediation; nondepository credit intermediation; activities related to credit intermediation; securities and commodity contracts brokerage; securities and commodity exchanges other financial investment activities; insurance carriers; insurance and employee benefits funds; and other investment pools and funds. In 2015, the financial services cluster accounted for 3.5 percent of total Ohio's total private employment.

The information technology cluster consists of six industries responsible for the design, development, support and management of hardware, software, multimedia and systems integration services (computer peripheral equipment manufacturing; semiconductor and other electronic component manufacturing; software publishers; data processing, hosting, and related services; other information services; and, computer systems design and related services). In 2015, the information technology cluster accounted for 1.8 percent of total Ohio employment.

The automotive industry cluster is comprised of four industries that are involved in the production of equipment for transporting people and goods (motor vehicle manufacturing; motor vehicle parts manufacturing; engine, turbine, and power transmission equipment manufacturing; and motor vehicle body and trailer manufacturing). In 2014, the automotive cluster employed 2.0 percent of Ohio's total employment.

Testimony concerning the economic effects of HB 2444. "The Kansas economy will see boosts in real income, population and consumption from lower food sales tax. Those benefits will then be overcome by the increased costs (taxes) to businesses. Kansas businesses will take time to adapt to higher production cost environment. Businesses will see falling investment, falling exports to national and global markets, and falling job growth. Eventually Kansas consumers will be worse off than current economic trajectory due to falling income, jobs, and supply of goods/services. With slower growth in income, consumption and business activity, dynamic economic effects will put downward pressure on revenues collected."

The polymers and chemicals industry cluster is comprised of 7 manufacturing industries that are involved in the production of a variety of products, including pesticides, fertilizer, paints and coatings, soap, and rubber. In 2014, this industry cluster employed more than 51,000 workers. During the 2007 to 2009 recession, employment declined 13 percent, compared to Ohio total employment declining 6.8 percent. Overall, the polymers and chemicals cluster is expected to decline by another 5,600 jobs from 2012 to 2022.

The aerospace and aviation cluster consists of five industries responsible for manufacturing aerospace equipment, air transportation and satellite telecommunications (Electronic instrument manufacturing, Aerospace product and parts manufacturing, Scheduled air transportation, Nonscheduled air transportation, and Satellite telecommunications). In 2013, the aerospace and aviation industry cluster's employment of more than 36,500 accounted for 0.7 percent of total Ohio employment.

Food processing is the processing of raw materials into food products and drinks for human or animal consumption. The food processing industry cluster is composed of 10 separate industries. In 2013, the food processing cluster employed more than 63,930 workers, about 1.5 percent of Ohio's total employment

This study adds two new components to the Regional Land Use Allocation Decision Analysis Tool, which was developed for ODOT in 2013. This tool uses information on infrastructure availability (accessibility, sewer, water services), current land-use policies where available, and environmental constraints to allocate regional and county forecasts of population and employment to 40 acre cells in each metropolitan region of Ohio. This information is then used in subsequent transportation models to estimate the number of auto trips, trip distances and the resulting VMT. This study adds two critical components to this model: vehicle choice and a better understanding of the impacts of declines in population and employment. The outputs of the revised land-allocation tool provide population and employment distribution to forecast auto trips, vehicle type distribution and trip distances at the TAZ level for each future scenario.

"The best pathway to the middle class is through a postsecondary education, but not everyone goes directly from high school to college. Are those who enter the workforce directly from high school doomed to work minimum wage jobs? In Career Clusters, we examine which sectors of the labor market afford individuals the best route to a middle class income. Using forecasts, we identify the most promising clusters for job seekers with a high school diploma or less, middle skills such as a certificate or Associate's degree, and those with Bachelor's degrees or better. Here are several key highlights from the report: While jobs for workers with high school diplomas are in decline, they still exist. Jobs for middle skill workers (jobs for workers with some college, a certificate, or an Associate's degree) will make up 29 percent of the workforce by 2018. Manufacturing will continue to decline in total employment, but retiring Baby Boomers will create 2 million job openings. The gender gap in wages varies greatly from cluster to cluster. For example, the gap in Architecture and Construction is $2,000; in Health Science, it is $69,000. ..."--Resource home page.
