There is an ongoing debate in information systems (IS) about the different research paradigms among regional IS research communities (ISRCs). The Anglo-American ISRC tends to be more behaviorist, while the European, and especially the German-speaking, ISRC tends to be more constructivist. This results in marked disparities in use of research methodologies. Especially in empirical methods, the Germanspeaking ISRC seems to be not broadly enough positioned. However, empirical methods play a significant role when it comes to publications in high-ranking IS journals and are thus of particular importance. This study examines how the use of empirical methods in the German-speaking ISRC developed between 2010 and 2020 and to what extent this differs from the international ISRC. In this study, we conducted a literature analysis of journal articles of the German-speaking ISRC. We manually classified the used methodology and descriptively analyzed the results. Social movements outcomes has been analysed by different perspectives. Only recently social movements studies start to focus on the unanticipated consequences of social movements strategies and collective action. Talking about unanticipated consequences of social movements meets the need of deeper understanding social, political and cultural change and poses some important questions for social movements research. The article aims to outline some of these questions, also stressing on the reasons why social movements scholars paid little attention to the study of unanticipated consequences of social movements in the past; it also aims at proposing a new classification starting from the Weber's social action ideal type, with particular attention to the Merton's and Boudon's works. Finally, some methodological considerations will be made in order to better understand empirical issues around the topic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CAUSAL inference , *COMPARATIVE studies , *BOOLEAN algebra - Abstract
Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) is a relatively young method of causal inference that continues to diffuse across the social sciences. However, recent methodological research has found the conservative (QCA-CS) and the intermediate solution type (QCA-IS) of QCA to fail fundamental tests of correctness. Even under conditions otherwise ideal for causal discovery, both solution types frequently committed causal fallacies by presenting inferences that were in direct disagreement with the underlying data-generating structure to be discovered by QCA. None of these problems affected the parsimonious solution type (QCA-PS). These findings conflict with conventional wisdom in the QCA literature, which has it that QCA-CS uses empirical information only and that QCA-IS is preferable to both QCA-CS and QCA-PS. The present article resolves these contradictions. It shows that QCA-CS and QCA-IS systematically supplement empirical data with matching artificial data. These artificial data, however, regularly induce causal fallacies of severe magnitude. Researchers who employ QCA-CS or QCA-IS in empirical analyses thus always risk moving further away from the truth rather than closer to it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a highly relevant contribution, Santana et al. (2021) outlined the challenges for qualitative enquiries during the pandemic. We agree that overcoming these challenges is very important since qualitative research is vital for understanding both the impacts of COVID-19 on human communities around the globe and its significance for sustainable futures. However, we argue that a more fundamental approach is needed to address problems within scientific organisations, thinking and practices that directly affect qualitative research capabilities. Even if data analysis in Africa has allegedly allowed analysts to expand the boundaries of inquiry, social science research in the continent has been hindered by several problems. Some of these problems could be viewed as subcategories of the idols that Francis Bacon had identified. We show in the present article that bad data lead to bad analyses, which in turn lead to misleading interpretations and misleading interpretations lead to a type of knowledge that is distinctively different from real and objective knowledge. We conclude by recommending that to avoid most, if not all, of the research problems in Africa, social science researchers should realize that social phenomena are embedded in an infinite web of relations from which only true meaning can emerge. It follows that, to gain a proper appreciation of such network of relations, social phenomena must be approached at various levels from different perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The structural equation modelling (SEM) technique has been touted as a useful tool for tightening links between theoretical and empirical operations management (OM) research. Despite SEM's increasing prominence in the field, leading scholars continue to call for a deeper infusion of theory into empirical OM research. To strengthen ties between theory and analysis in OM research, this study evaluates previous OM applications of SEM and identifies specific ways we can use SEM to advance operations management theory. Through judicious use of SEM techniques, we believe that OM researchers have the opportunity to confirm and extend existing theoretical frameworks. Further, we offer guidance on how to operationalise measurement models such that researchers accurately depict the causality of a construct. To demonstrate how to advance theory, we use an illustrative example of SEM in an OM context based upon data gathered from a survey of over 200 respondents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose a typology of supply chain management strategies based on data from a large sample of US firms. The resulting typologies and their relationships with firm performance are tested. The result of set correlation analysis on the data revealed six distinct supply chain management typologies, and showed significant statistical relationships with performance. Additional analysis revealed that two of the typologies describe the ideas of velocity, variability, and visibility of supply chains. The paper also discusses the relationship between product life cycle and the supply chain management initiatives that comprise the strategy typologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ensuring the competitiveness of pedagogical universities and their graduates is one of the strategic tasks in the field of education and the country’s economy. Its achievement requires orientation of the basic educational programs and technologies for their implementation to the needs of the modern school. This necessitates a rethinking of approaches to organizing the training of future teachers, strengthening its practical orientation by expanding the area of responsibility of direct employers. The central issue of the article is the role and directions of implementing partnerships between the employer and the pedagogical university in preparing future teachers in the current educational situation. The purpose of this article is to identify promising areas of its development on the basis of an analysis of the existing regional experience in the training of teachers based on the implementation of social and professional partnerships. The study of the role and directions of the implementation of partnerships between the employer and the pedagogical university in the preparation of modern graduates – future teachers was carried out on the basis of the application of theoretical and empirical research methods. An analysis of the role of the employer in the training process was carried out on the basis of questionnaires and expert interviews. The main material was the pedagogical experience of teachers of the Institute of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of KSPU named after V.P. Astafiev, and employers – directors of educational institutions of secondary education of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Republic of Khakassia, as well as the results of a study of the problems of training future teachers. Based on empirical data, the article concludes that social and professional partnerships are a necessary part of the training of future teachers in accordance with modern requirements and standards. The role and directions of implementing partnerships between employers and a pedagogical university in the preparation of future teachers are detailed. The practical significance lies in the use of the results obtained in the system of higher pedagogical education in order to ensure high-quality training of graduates.

One of the crimes that are prone to happen to children is sexual crime. Sexual crimes committed against children will have a psychological impact on the child, in the form of mental and emotional state disorders, so that the child who is the victim should be given great attention to the suffering or loss experienced in the form of restitution from the perpetrator. The purpose of this research is to study and analyze how the fulfillment of restitution for child victims of sexual crimes and the extent to which law enforcers and victims influence the fulfillment of these restitution rights, so that empirical research methods are used to answer these problems. The results of this study indicate that the fulfillment of restitution rights for child victims of sexual crimes in the city of Makassar is not fulfilled. This is evidenced by only one case where the victim submitted a request for restitution and the victim did not get restitution from the perpetrator. Law enforcers and victims each have influence in fulfilling restitution rights. Even so, the role of the victim has a bigger influence, this is because even though the law enforcer should inform the victim about the right of restitution, it is the victim who decides whether to apply for restitution or not because restitution can only be obtained if the victim submits a request. not automatically accepted by the victim. How to cite item: Miftahul Jannah, S., Muchtar, S., Mirzana, H. Spain has traditionally been a dubbing country. Nevertheless, subtitled versions are becoming more visible nowadays. One of the reasons that explain the increasing presence of subtitled films may be the growing concentration of English-speaking people in some areas. But it is not the only factor that explains this often unnoticed transformation: the ease of access to subtitled versions of TV series on the Internet, and the habit of watching subtitled films in other contexts such as film festivals or cinema forums, might help to understand why audiences seem attracted to the subtitled versions of films. In any case, while there may be many surmises, there is little data to confirm them. This article analyses the results of an empirical study thought to provide some information about the reception of subtitled films within the context of a cinema forum held on a weekly basis in a specific Spanish area. The overall purpose of the work is to shed some light on both the audience's profile and its opinion about subtitling as an alternative way of watching foreign films in a dubbing country. The study is carried out through a survey that allows us to interpret the resulting conclusions from a sociological perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diversity in teams has become an important societal and economic issue which is studied in various scientific domains. In organizational sciences, particularly empirical research methods prevail. This paper proposes to explore agent-based computational economics as a research approach for workforce diversity more intensely due to its inherent properties like capturing heterogeneous interacting agents. For highlighting this, this paper presents an agent-based computational model based on the framework of NK fitness landscapes. In the simulations, artificial organizations search for superior levels of organizational performance with search being delegated to several and potentially diverse decision-making agents. The experiments control for the level of task complexity and reflects four different attributes of workplace diversity among agents: cognitive capabilities to (i) generate and (ii) evaluate new solutions, (iii) effort efficiency and (iv) commitment to the overall organizational objective. The results suggest that the effects of workforce diversity differ across task complexity and attributes of diversity. Diversity of commitment has the strongest impact which results from interactions among local maximizers and agents seeking to globally maximize with only local means. Moreover, the results point to nonlinear effects of multi-attributive diversity on organizational performance.

The author presents the concept of an exhibition dedicated to the tapestry art of ethnic Buryatia since its inception in the region, in the 1970s to the present day. For the first time, in one exhibition were presented the works of 15 authors, performed in different materials and directions. The purpose of the exhibition project is to show the creative achievements of artists, the variety of themes and plots that reflect the specifics of the region. During the preparation for the exhibition, both theoretical and empirical research methods were used: bibliographic sources were studied, meetings, conversations with authors were held in order to obtain a more complete and holistic idea of the concept of the works and the nature of creation. Combining rather disparate materials into a single exhibition concept is currently relevant for the development of modern decorative and applied art in Buryatia in the field of soft materials. As a result, the article presents a kind of artistic space of tapestry art, filled with an individual vision, united by the specifics of expressive means in the field of hand weaving.

The article is devoted to the consideration of the relevance and analysis of the formation of the professional competence of a foreign language teacher. This is due to the modern socio-cultural conditions, new educational standards, and the ever-increasing requirements for the process of teaching foreign languages. The term "professional competence" is considered using an integrated methodology, which includes theoretical and empirical research methods. The authors have concluded that the professional competence of a foreign language teacher is a complex of various skills and abilities facilitating effective cooperation between the teacher and students in certain professional situations. Furthermore, the authors see the solutions to these problems, the creation of a flexible and mobile system of advanced training and the search for more effective forms of interaction between educational institutions, methodological services, and professional associations of teachers for purposeful continuous pedagogical education of teachers of a foreign language.

Witness is a person who sees, hears, and directly experiences the occurrence of a criminal act. The information conveyed by the witness can assist the investigation process to the court to reveal the actual criminal suspect. Meanwhile, victim is a person experiencing the occurrence of a criminal act that causes harm materially or physically. This study uses empirical research methods which in this study the writer used research from primary data. The results of this study are witnesses and victims have priority in their statements during the investigation process of criminal cases both at the investigation stage and the court investigation stage. The implementation of protection as in the Act on Witness and Victim Protection in Batam City has not been fully effective because there are several rights of witnesses and/or victims that cannot be fulfilled by the Police since there are no special authority and special budget to provide protection for witnesses and/or victims in criminal cases in Batam city.

The search for necessary and sufficient causes of some outcome of interest, referred to as configurational comparative research, has long been one of the main preoccupations of evaluation scholars and practitioners. However, only the last three decades have witnessed the evolution of a set of formal methods that are sufficiently elaborate for this purpose. In this article, I provide a hands-on tutorial for qualitative comparative analysis (QCA)—currently the most popular configurational comparative method. In drawing on a recent evaluation of patient follow-through effectiveness in Lynch syndrome tumor-screening programs, I explain the search target of QCA, introduce its core concepts, guide readers through the procedural protocol of this method, and alert them to mistakes frequently made in QCA’s use. An annotated replication file for the QCApro extension package for R accompanies this tutorial. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, we articulate preliminary insights from two pilot studies. These studies contribute to an ongoing process of developing empirical, cross-disciplinary measures to understand the cognitive and learning effects of complex artistic practices – effects that we situate between theory of embodied concepts and conceptually calibrated physical attention and action. The stage of this process that we report on here was led by the cognitive performance studies scholar and dramaturge, Pil Hansen, and undertaken in collaboration with the experimental psychologist, Vina Goghari, and the behavioural economist, Robert Oxoby, assisted by four research assistants from Drama, Music, and Psychology at the University of Calgary. Our team set out to test the following hypothesis:Active participation in performance generating systems has a positive effect on advanced student performers’ working memory capacity, executive functions, and learning. Our results have implications, in particular, for understandings of embodied learning in the educational sector, however a perhaps more significant contribution is a better understanding of the measures and constructs needed to arrive at a more complex, yet operational concept of embodied learning and forward the experimental study of relationships between performing arts practices, cognition, and learning. In particular, the graphic documents of the NATO member state armed forces and those of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are different due to:requisites and requirements to them;scale and coordinate system of topographic maps;methods of applying an operational (tactical) situation;languages and abbreviations of the use of conditional signs, inscriptions of the actions of the troops;ways of transferring graphic information;levels of information details applied to graphic operational (combat) documents. The purpose of the article is to offer to a wide range of military experts to begin a discussion on the implementation of NATO standards while developing graphic operational (combat) documents in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The following empirical research methods were used in the article: observation, induction and generalization, verbal and comparative analyses. The main result of the study is the identification of the main problems in the implementation of NATO standards while developing operational (combat) documents in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and justifying proposals for their possible solutions and phased implementation. The scientific novelty of the article is determined by the fact that it was proposed, for the first time in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, to make holistic changes in the approaches to drawing graphic operative (combat) documents according to NATO standards. The practical significance of the research results is the development of proposals, implementation of which will bring the Armed Forces of Ukraine closer to NATO standards, in particular in the process of operational planning. Thus, the article outlines ways to NATO standards implementation related to the development of graphic operational (combat) documents in the Armed Forces of Ukraine during next 2-3 years. It is expected that in future, within the framework of Ukraine's integration into NATO, the ways to a full compatibility of operational (combat) documents of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the NATO member state armed forces will be studied.

Engineers are not usually confronted with empirical research methods during their education. Classical product developers thus lack knowledge and the intuition of what to consider when using methods in user studies. The problem is that user studies therefore miss potential development goals for optimized user-centered product design. To resolve these difficulties, a process approach and an in-depth guide have been developed. They provide knowledge, focused on psychology and social sciences about user studies along the ideally typical history of an empirical study in a structured, compact and comprehensible form. This enables product developers to more effectively and efficiently capture the needs of customers. At the same time, the effort required to implement user studies is reduced, errors are avoided and quality is increased. In the future, the process approach and the guide will be verified and validated.

In the light of writings of Pring, Brew, Barnett and Hammersley in the last decade, and in relation to the application of empirical research methods in education, this paper offers a critique to pragmatic view and a corrective to the Pring’s paradigmatic viewpoint and recognizes transcendental realism as an alternative theory to underpin the use of scientific educational research method. The argument is made that the deployment of scientific research methods needs to be underpinned by a philosophical theory that does not commit to that the absolute knowledge of the educational phenomena is possible. Further to this, by discussing false dualisms between quantitative and qualitative approaches, and between structure and agency in relation to transcendental realist viewpoint, the paper offers a new approach to scientific educational research method titled “paraquantitativism”.

The unavailability of civil courts to hear cases relating to Muslim family law and other related matters persuaded community leaders and religious scholars in the United Kingdom to establish several Sharīʿah councils. This article explores the role played by these councils in resolving matrimonial disputes, especially the process and procedure of issuing an Islamic divorce. Library and empirical research methods were employed. Three main uk Sharīʿah councils were visited wherein mediation and arbitration sessions, as well as monthly meetings, were observed to examine how disputes are handled and decisions made. The study leads to several findings. Mediation and arbitration are the main methods used in the process, and despite the relative success of Sharīʿah councils, they face challenges resulting from the dichotomy and overlapping jurisdictions of Islamic and English family law and the non-alignment of divorce issued by uk courts and religious divorce.

In empirical software engineering, benchmarks can be used for comparing different methods, techniques and tools. However, the recent ACM SIGSOFT Empirical Standards for Software Engineering Research do not include an explicit checklist for benchmarking. In this paper, we discuss benchmarks for software performance and scalability evaluation as example research areas in software engineering, relate benchmarks to some other empirical research methods, and discuss the requirements on benchmarks that may constitute the basis for a checklist of a benchmarking standard for empirical software engineering research., This is the author's version of the work. (1) Background: AI technology has been deeply applied to online shopping platforms to provide more accurate and personalized services for consumers. It is of great significance to study the different functional experiences of AI for consumers to improve the current application status of AI technology. (2) Method: Based on the “SOR” model, this study divides the AI technology experienced by the consumers of online shopping platforms into three dimensions: accuracy, insight, and interaction experience. The perceived value is taken as the mediating variable from the prospect of perceived utility value and perceived hedonic value. This article uses empirical research methods to analyze the effect of the three dimensions of online shopping AI experience to research the internal influence mechanism of consumers’ purchase intention. (3) Results: 1. The accuracy, insight, and interaction experience of AI marketing technology each have a significant positive impact on consumers’ perceived utility value and hedonic value, 2. Both the perceived utility value and perceived hedonic value obtained by an AI technology experience can promote the formation of consumers’ purchase intention, 3. The perceived hedonic value was better than perceived utility value at promoting the consumers’ purchase intention.

Being in a romantic relationship is characterized by a high degree of intimacy and affective involvement. Affective behavior indicates the emotional content in couple interactions and therefore promotes an understanding of the evolution of romantic relationships. When couples are also parents, their affective behavior reflects their romantic and coparental bonds. In this paper, we present an observation of parent couples’ affective behavior during a coparenting conflict discussion task to document whether and how much it improved during couple therapy. Two contrasting cases of affective behavior change are included. Observational coding of affective behavior within pre- and post-intervention coparenting conflict discussion tasks was carried out to compute means and CIs for each partner in both cases. In addition, the partners’ coparental and romantic satisfaction were evaluated through validated self-report questionnaires in pre- and post-intervention assessments; this helped document whether the partners’ coparental and romantic satisfaction were dissimilar between the two cases. Finally, a clinical analysis of both cases was realized with the contribution of the therapists to investigate possible differences within therapy sessions. Statistical analyses revealed negative means of affective behavior for couple A in the pre-intervention assessment and positive means in the post-intervention assessment. Partners from couple B had negative means of affective behavior in the pre- and post-intervention assessments. Results concerning coparental and romantic satisfaction differed: Couple A’s coparental satisfaction slightly increased and the romantic satisfaction somewhat decreased, whereas couple B’s coparental satisfaction remained stable and the romantic satisfaction slightly increased between the pre- and post-intervention assessments. The clinical analysis revealed that the interactional quality of couple A slightly improved within therapy sessions and that both partners succeeded in working together as coparents, notwithstanding their romantic distress. Couple B conveyed coparental distress and exhibited poor interactional quality throughout therapy sessions (e.g., repeated criticism and contempt). This study contributes to enriching the more traditional empirical research methods in the field of couple psychotherapy, as it takes into account microlevel affective changes within parent couples’ interactions in addition to self-reported data. Furthermore, the analysis of therapy sessions supports the importance of working with affective behavior in couple therapy.

Microfoundations have been one of the key themes in strategy research over the last decade or so. Fundamentally, microfoundations seek to understand collective (e.g., firm)-level constructs in terms of the actions and interactions of individuals. This chapter briefly discusses the nature of microfoundations, provides an exposition of the microfoundational currents in contemporary strategy thinking, and discusses the key challenges that need to be addressed to advance microfoundational research. Chief among these challenges are the development and application of proper empirical methods and developing models of decision-making that are particularly relevant in a strategy context. The latter task involves going beyond expected utility or bounded rationality models and developing models that can address genuine (“deep”) uncertainty.

Understanding the interdependency of organizations in a disaster is necessary to facilitate collaboration. Interdependencies in the utilities sector have traditionally focused upon the technical aspects of these dependencies. This research used empirical research methods that included an observational study of utility stakeholders during a real-time disaster. The study investigated the cultural challenges associated with the socio-cultural interdependencies that stakeholders from the utilities sector encountered when working in emergency management. Participants identified that a lack of legitimacy and trust created barriers to collaboration. The paper concludes with recommendations for the industry to address the potential cultural barriers encountered in a disaster.

Increasingly, firms are adopting two major supply chain management initiatives: to undertake external integration with supply chain partners and to implement inter-organizational information systems (IOSs). However, academic researchers have not adequately investigated effects of these types of initiatives. Using empirical data from 154 buyer–supplier dyads, we examined the direct and indirect effects (through external integration) of IOS usage on capabilities of buyer– supplier dyads. We found that external integration plays a mediating role in the relationship between IOS usage and capabilities of buyer– supplier dyad. This is the first study to investigate the effects of IOS usage and external integration on capabilities of buyer–supplier dyad.
