BACKGROUND: Young adults have historically high levels of cannabis use at a time which coincides with emotional and cognitive development. Age of regular onset of cannabis use and sex at birth are hypothesized to influence the relationship between cannabis use and cognition. Here we investigated past 6-month cannabis use in relation to emotional and executive functioning. We further considered age of onset and sex in subgroup analyses. METHOD: Young adults (N = 225; ages 16-22) completed a substance use interview and cognitive battery, including the Emotional Word-Emotional Face Stroop and NIH toolbox executive functioning tasks. Linear regressions examined relationships between past 6-month cannabis use episodes and performance. Subgroup analyses investigated whether age of onset or sex impacted relationships. RESULTS: After correcting for multiple comparisons, greater past 6-month cannabis use episodes were related to poorer Emotional Stroop Congruent Accuracy (p = .0004, FDR-p = .002) and List Sorting Working Memory (p = .02, FDR-p = .10) performance. Younger age of regular use onset marginally related to lower Emotional Stroop Congruent Accuracy performance (p = .03, FDR-p = .13). There were no cannabis use by sex interactions on cognition. CONCLUSIONS: Consistent with prior findings, results suggest small reductions in cannabis-related performance in processing speed during emotional Stroop and working memory tasks. Age of onset was modestly related to Stroop performance, but not sex. Longitudinal studies which detail patterns of cannabis and other substance use are needed to better assess brain-behavior relationships and other factors (e.g., age of onset of regular use, sex) which could influence cannabis-related impairments in cognitive functioning.

Background: Understanding the determinants of global quality of life in cancer patients is crucial for improving their overall well-being. While correlations between various factors and quality of life have been established, the causal relationships remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to identify the causal factors influencing global quality of life in cancer patients and compare them with known correlative factors. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire data, alongside demographic and disease-related features, collected from new cancer patients during their initial visit to an oncology outpatient clinic. Correlations with global quality of life were identified using univariate and multivariate regression analyses. Causal inference analysis was performed using two approaches. First, we employed the Dowhy Python library for causal analysis, incorporating prior information and manual characterization of an acyclic graph. Second, we utilized the Linear Non-Gaussian Acyclic Model (LiNGAM) machine learning algorithm from the Lingam Python library, which automatically generated an acyclic graph without prior information. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results: Multivariate analysis of 469 new admissions revealed that disease stage, role functioning, emotional functioning, social functioning, fatigue, pain and diarrhea were linked with global quality of life. The most influential direct causal factors were emotional functioning, social functioning, and physical functioning, while the most influential indirect factors were physical functioning, emotional functioning, and fatigue. Additionally, the most prominent total causal factors were identified as type of cancer (diagnosis), cancer stage, and sex, with total causal effect ratios of -9.47, -4.67, and − 1.48, respectively. The LiNGAM algorithm identified type of cancer (diagnosis), nausea and vomiting and social functioning as significant, with total causal effect ratios of -9.47, -0.42, and 0.42, respectively. Conclusions: This study identified that causal factors for global quality of life in new cancer patients are distinct from correlative factors. Understanding these causal relationships could provide valuable insights into the complex dynamics of quality of life in cancer patients and guide targeted interventions to improve their well-being. Introduction: Emotional functioning in older adults is influenced by normal aging and cognitive impairment, likely heterogeneous across positive versus negative aspects of emotional functioning. Little is known about positive emotional experiences at the early stages of cognitive impairment. Methods: We assessed different aspects of emotional functioning among 448 participants aged 65+ (Normal Control (NC) = 276, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) = 103, and mild dementia of the Alzheimer type (mild DAT) = 69) and tested moderators. Results: Compared to NC, older adults with MCI and mild DAT have maintained many positive aspects of emotional functioning, despite higher levels of negative affect, sadness, and loneliness. Among the oldest-old, the mild DAT group experienced higher fear and lower self-efficacy. Discussion: Older adults at early stages of cognitive impairment can experience positive aspects of emotional functioning, such as positive affect, purpose, and life satisfaction, all of which are important buildable psychological resources for coping. A diagnosis of breast cancer implies an emotional burden on the patient's personal and family functioning, especially in traditional societies. Along with the physical and emotional difficulties that are inherent to cancer, there is also a tendency in Arab society to keep the disease a secret. The present study examined the impact of sharing information about the mother's illness on the emotional and educational scholastic functioning of children of Arab Israeli women with breast cancer. The sample included 39 Arab women with breast cancer, their school aged children and their children's teachers, who answered self-report questionnaires. Findings indicated that mothers and children who shared information related to the illness reported more perceived social support, children's higher academic achievements, fewer emotional and behavioral problems, and higher pro-social behaviors than children and mothers who did not share information regarding the illness. This study underscores the role of sharing information about breast-cancer illness among Arab mothers, on the emotional and scholastic functioning of their children. Further research is needed to provide a way to facilitate the information-sharing process in the community, and to prevent the negative 'ripple effect' of concealing the mother's illness in Arab society. INTRODUCTION: High social-emotional functioning, including emotion regulation and nonviolent conflict resolution, constitute developmental competencies of adolescence that promote health and well-being. We used prospective longitudinal data from a predominantly Latinx population to understand how family context and social environment risk factors for violence related to patterns of social-emotional functioning during the transition between middle school and high school. METHODS: We prospectively interviewed 599 8th graders every 6 months for 2 years. We used trajectory models to explore longitudinal patterns of emotion regulation and nonviolent problem solving and multinomial regression to distinguish how these groups were associated with family context, partner and peer gang involvement, and neighborhood social disorder. RESULTS: Youth reporting lower neighborhood disorder in 8th grade were more likely to be in the high emotion regulation trajectory group. Youth without exposure to gangs through peers and partners in 8th grade were more likely to be in the high nonviolent problem-solving skills trajectory group. Family cohesion was associated with being in the high trajectory groups for both emotional regulation and problem-solving skills. CONCLUSION: Emotion regulation and nonviolent problem-solving skills had different associations with the social environment risk factors for violence examined, indicating that mechanisms of influence and strategies for intervention may vary. The association between problem-solving skills and exposure to gangs through peers and partners shows that social norms may be important targets of change. Additionally, interventions with parents that build family cohesion during adolescence may buffer environmental exposures that shape adolescents ability to practice protective social-emotional behaviors.

COVID-19 has been considered a possible cause of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or similar conditions. However, what specific disease symptoms may contribute most to prolonged PTSD-like symptoms in COVID-19 survivors is unclear. The study aimed to present the factor structure of COVID-19 symptoms and identify which symptoms of COVID-19 best explain the subsequent presence of PTSD-like symptoms in mild COVID-19 survivors. COVID-positive adults (n = 341) completed online self-report scales at the baseline assessment (T1) and after approximately 4 months (T2), including The Patient Health Questionnaire Anxiety-Depression Scale; The Scale of Psychosocial Experience Related to COVID-19, The Primary Care PTSD Screen for DSM-5; and self-designed questionnaires evaluating the severity of COVID-related medical and neurocognitive symptoms and pre-pandemic variables. Exploratory factor analysis revealed five factors of COVID-19 symptoms: flu-like, respiratory, cold, neurological, and neurocognitive. Hierarchical logistic regression showed that besides selected control variables (anxiety and depression, presence of PTSD-like symptoms, COVID-related stigma in T1), neurocognitive symptoms of COVID-19 in T1 but not other symptoms of the disease were a significant predictor of the presence of PTSD-like symptom in T2. Findings suggest a need for a comprehensive neurocognitive assessment of people diagnosed with COVID-19 and prompt interventions targeting the prevention of potential risks for long-term PTSD-like states at the community level. ObjectivesAbdominal pain, emergency department visits, and hospitalizations impact lives of children with acute recurrent pancreatitis (ARP) and chronic pancreatitis (CP). Data on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in this population, however, remains limited. We aimed to evaluate HRQOL in children with ARP or CP; and test biopsychosocial risk factors associated with low HRQOL.MethodsData were acquired from the INternational Study Group of Pediatric Pancreatitis: In search for a cuRE registry. Baseline demographic and clinical questionnaires, the Child Health Questionnaire (measures HRQOL) and Child Behavior Checklist (measures emotional and behavioral functioning) were completed at enrollment.ResultsThe sample included 368 children (54.3% girls, mean age = 12.7years, standard deviation [SD] = 3.3); 65.2% had ARP and 34.8% with CP. Low physical HRQOL (M = 38.5, SD = 16.0) was demonstrated while psychosocial HRQOL (M = 49.5, SD = 10.2) was in the normative range. Nearly two years into the pandemic, a large body of data has emerged on how COVID-19-positive patients function with the viral infection. It is now known that the virus targets the central nervous system(CNS). As a result, in addition to the expected common health complaints, patients display cognitive and emotional problems. Cognitive deficits should be expected particularly in patients who have arrived at an intensive care unit as a result of respiratory failure, in patients suffering from comorbid neurodegenerative diseases and re - spiratory conditions, as well as in the elderly. However, these may also occur in patients with moderate to mild symptoms as well as in those of a younger age. The cognitive impairment has an unknown profile. Given the hypothesised hippocampal vulnerability to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, one might expect particular difficulties with memory, attention, information processing, and executive functions. With varying neuropsychological and emotional problems, convalescents in trying to return to their social, family and professional life require professional psychological assistance. The role of neuropsychologists is here crucial. Indeed, many patients will require a detailed, multifaceted neuropsychological diagnosis that will form the basis for subsequent neuropsychological rehabilitation. Purpose: To provide an overview of the effects of pediatric stroke on emotional and social functioning in childhood. Methods: A literature review was completed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews. A systematic search of studies on internalizing problems and social functioning after pediatric stroke in PsycInfo, PsycArticles, and PubMed databases was conducted from inception to November 2021. A total of 583 studies were identified, and 32 met the inclusion criteria. Results: The review suggests that children after stroke are at risk of developing internalizing problems and a wide range of social difficulties. Internalizing problems are often associated with environmental factors such as family functioning and parents' mental health. In addition, a higher risk of developing psychosocial problems is associated with lower cognitive functioning and severe neurological impairment. Conclusions: The assessment of psychological well-being and social functioning after pediatric stroke is helpful to provide adequate support to children and their families. Over the last four decades, Georgetown University psychiatrist Murray Bowen has developed a new theory of human emotional functioning and behavior called family systems theory, which views the family as a naturally occurring system. The theory not only provides new insights into human behavior, but it can contribute to bridging the compartmentalization of knowledge that exists in medicine and the life sciences. Since the theory has roots in the insights of Darwin and Freud, the story of its development begins more than a century ago. The publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859 had emotional reverberations that lasted well into the twentieth century. With the brilliant insight of evolution by natural selection, Charles Darwin presented a plausible mechanism for man's evolutionary descent from the lower animals. In an 1872 publication, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, Darwin showed that certain human emotions were also inherited in an evolutionary sense. Human beings demonstrate behaviors that are similar to emotional behaviors that serve the survival of subhuman species. In recent years, a great deal of research in fields such as ethology, sociobiology and comparative neuroanatomy has supported Darwin's assertions about emotional functioning in man and animals. Abstract Background A breast cancer diagnosis can threaten every aspect of a woman’s wellbeing, including her mental health. With the growing number of breast cancer survivors, studies addressing mental health in this population are of increasing importance now more than ever. Therefore, the current study investigated trends in emotional functioning and psychosocial wellbeing of breast cancer survivors, and the demographic and treatment characteristics that may influence these trends. Methods Prospectively collected data of women treated for breast cancer at the Erasmus MC were analyzed in this study using a cohort study design. Emotional functioning was measured using the EORTC-QLQ-C30, while psychosocial wellbeing was measured using the BREAST-Q. Type of surgery, age, family status and employment status of study participants were retrieved, and multilevel analyses were performed to identify trends in emotional functioning and psychosocial wellbeing and to determine the relationship between aforementioned characteristics and these outcomes. Results Three hundred thirty-four cancer survivors were analyzed. Psychosocial wellbeing declined, but emotional functioning showed a steady improvement over time. Women who underwent breast reconstruction showed a steeper increase in their emotional functioning, and women with no partner or children showed a marginal decline in psychosocial wellbeing between baseline and 12 months after surgery. Conclusions These findings can be utilized by healthcare teams to identify breast cancer patients at risk for emotional problems and to provide adequate psychological support to those women who need help dealing with their emotions and self-concept in order to optimize clinical treatment.

The aim of the work was to examine the quality of life in the domain of physical, emotional, social and school functioning of students with developmental disabilities who attend inclusive classes. The sample consisted of 80 respondents attending regular schools in the territory of the Republic of Serbia. The structure of the sample consisted of students with developmental disabilities (N-40) and students with regular development (N-40) of both sexes, aged 11 to 16 years. It was used for research purposes The PedsQLTM 4.0 Generic Core Scale. The obtained results showed that the quality of life of all students included in the sample is at an average level. The results confirmed the positive effects of inclusive education, especially in the domain of social functioning of students with disabilities. However, the results indicate that the school environment and the concept of education require permanent improvement in order to raise the quality of life of all students to a higher level.

Background: Cancer and its treatment can have substantial impact on patients' emotional functioning. Several patient‐reported outcome measures (PROMs) assessing emotional functioning are available, but differences in content limit the comparability of results. To better understand conceptual (dis)similarities, we conducted a content comparison of commonly used PROMs. Methods: We included emotional functioning items, scales, and item banks from the EORTC CAT Core, EORTC QLQ‐C30, FACT‐G, Hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), SF‐36, PRO‐CTCAE, and PROMIS (item banks for anxiety, depression, and anger). Item content was linked to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) and a hierarchical framework established for PROMIS. Single items could be coded with more than one ICF category but were solely assigned to one facet within the PROMIS framework. Results: The measures comprise 132 unique items covering the ICF components 'Body functions' (136/153 codings, 88.9%) and 'Activities and participation' (15/153, 9.8%). Most ICF codings (112/153, 73.2%) referred to the third‐level category 'b1528 Emotional functions, other specified'. According to the PROMIS framework 48.5% of the items assessed depression (64/132 items), followed by anxiety (41/132, 31.1%) and anger (26/132, 19.7%). The EORTC measures covered depression, anxiety, and anger in a single measure, while the PROMIS inventory provides separate item banks for these concepts. The FACT‐G, SF‐36, PRO‐CTCAE and HADS covered depression and anxiety, but not anger. Conclusion: Our results provide an in‐depth conceptual understanding of selected PROMs and important qualitative information going beyond psychometric evidence. This study examined the executive function (EF) of children with a history of arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) and preserved intellectual abilities, with reference to age at stroke onset, lesion characteristics, language, and motor functioning. In addition, the associations between EF and emotional and behavioral functioning were investigated. A battery of standardized neuropsychological tests was administered to children with previous AIS aged 7–12 in order to assess EF, including inhibition, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and attention. Parents rated questionnaires regarding real-life emotional and behavioral functioning. Finally, clinical and neuroradiological data were also gathered. Thirty patients were enrolled. Eight children fall in the lower end of the normative range or below in more than half of the EF measures, with working memory, inhibition and cognitive flexibility equally impaired, and attention relatively better preserved. Larger lesion size and language deficits were significantly associated with higher EF impairment. Emotional and behavioral functioning was lower in children with weaker EF. Children with a history of AIS, even those with preserved intellectual functioning, have a high risk of showing poor EF, mostly regardless of clinical features or functional impairment. EF difficulties are in turn associated with emotional and behavioral problems. Therefore, a standardized evaluation of EF in this population is mandatory as part of the follow-up, in order to ensure an early intervention and prevent related difficulties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Excessive Facebook use affects users' everyday social, health, and emotional functioning. The main aim of the study was to investigate the relations between Facebook intrusion, emotional functioning (three aspects of emotional intelligence, the tendency to ruminate, and the tendency to experience anxiety), and health problems (somatic symptoms, social dysfunction, and anxiety/insomnia). The participants were 1396 high school and university or college students; 71% of them were women. The authors used the Facebook Intrusion Scale, the Emotional Intelligence Scale (INTE), the Rumination Questionnaire, the Trait Anxiety Inventory (X-2), and the General Health Questionnaire. They found that the examined aspects of emotional functioning—rumination, trait anxiety, and emotional intelligence—were related to Facebook intrusion. They also established that anxiety, rumination, and emotional intelligence exerted a significant indirect effect on health problems: anxiety/insomnia via Facebook intrusion. This is an observational exploratory study assessing self-concept and its association with depression, anxiety, satisfaction with life, and quality of life 6 months after experiencing a traumatic brain injury. Participants were 33 patients who suffered a traumatic brain injury 6 months before the assessment. Objective: How patients and their partners cope with advanced cancer as a couple, may impact their emotional functioning (EF). The aim of this study was to assess dyadic coping (DC) of couples confronted with advanced cancer and its association with EF. Methods: Actor‐partner interdependence models were used to analyze baseline data of 566 couples facing advanced cancer participating in an observational study on quality of care and life. Measures included the DC Inventory and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer quality of life questionnaire (EOQLQ‐C30). Results: Negative DC (mean 86–88) was most often used and common DC (both mean 66) was least often used. We found small to moderate interdependence (r = 0.27−0.56) between patients' and partners' DC perceptions. Compared to partners, patients were more satisfied with their DC (p < 0.001). Partners' satisfaction with DC was positively associated with their own (B = 0.40, p < 0.001) and patients' (B = 0.23, p = 0.04) EF. We found positive actor (patients B = 0.37 B = 0.13, p = 0.04) and partner (both B = 0.17, p < 0.05) associations for negative DC in patients and partners. Partners' supportive DC was negatively associated with patients (B = −0.31, p = 0.03) and partners' EF (B = −0.34, p = 0.003). Conclusions: This study highlight the importance of DC (especially from the partners' perspective) for EF in advanced cancer but also identifies differences in the experience of patients and their partners. Future research is needed to understand the mechanisms of such relations and the common and unique support options that may facilitate adjustment in patients with advanced cancer and their partners. Adolescents with persisting post-concussive symptoms often report high levels of emotional distress, which can impact their daily functioning. The associations between modifiable factors, such as perceptions of recovery, and emotional distress have not been investigated in this age group.Objective: To evaluate perceptions about recovery duration (e.g., "my symptoms will last a long time", "my symptoms will be permanent rather than temporary") and its associations with emotional distress and functioning in children and adolescents with a slower post-concussive recovery.Methods: Participants (N = 49, 69% girls, 11-17 years old, M = 15.8 years old, SD = 1.8) were recruited from a concussion clinic on average 7.7 months after injury (SD = 2.5). Measures included the Illness Perception Questionnaire Revised (perceived duration of symptoms only) to evaluate recovery expectations, the Health and Behavior Inventory (self and parent reports) to evaluate current post-concussive symptoms (cognitive and somatic symptoms), the emotional distress subscale of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ-self-report), and the emotional functioning subscale of the Pediatric Quality of Life Questionnaire (PedsQL-self-report).Results: Regression analyses (linear models with all covariates entered at once) suggested that greater expectations for symptom persistence were significantly associated with higher emotional distress on both SDQ and PedsQL subscales, after controlling for post-concussive symptom severity and other confounds. Emotional distress/functioning was not associated with perceptions of symptom duration reported by parents, severity of post-concussive symptoms (self- and parent reports), age, number of concussions, time since injury, or a history of mental health concern or diagnosis (parent-reported).Conclusions: This study suggests that pessimistic attitudes for recovery duration may be more strongly associated with emotional distress than current post-concussive symptom severity or a history of mental health concern or diagnosis. Aim: We aimed to examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between sleep and work-related impaired cognitive and emotional functioning in police employees. Methods: This study included 410 participants (52% men) employed in a police district in Norway at baseline, of which 50% also participated in the study at 6 months later follow-up. The questionnaires included items measuring work schedule, sleep length, insomnia, as well as impaired cognitive and emotional functioning at work. Results: The results showed that insomnia was related to impaired work-related emotional functioning measured at baseline, and to impaired cognitive functioning measured at both baseline and follow-up. Sleep length and rotating shift work were not associated with future decline in cognitive or emotional functioning. Conclusion: Our study indicates that the relationship between insomnia and emotional functioning at work may be transient, whereas insomnia can be related to both immediate and future impaired cognitive functioning. Replication of the findings in larger samples is advised. The findings call for an emphasis on the prevention and treatment of sleep problems among police employees as a mean of maintaining and improving cognitive and emotional functioning at work, and thereby reducing the risk for impaired performance and negative health and safety outcomes.

Present study was carried out to investigate the relationship between emotional functioning and family functioning of middleaged mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, a mixed method approach was used in the second phase of study to explore factors contributing to family conflict and family cohesion. A purposive sample of 100 middle-aged mothers (age ranged between 40-45 years) was approached for this study. The participants were given the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (Cooper & Pertrides, 2010) for measuring emotional functioning and Covid-19 Household Environment Scale (Behar-Zusman et al., 2020) for measuring family functioning. The results revealed a significant positive correlation between emotional functioning, family cohesion, and a significant negative correlation between emotional functioning and family conflict. Moreover, it was observed that family functioning of mothers living in nuclear family system was better than those living in joint family system. The qualitative phase of the study revealed that factors related to finances, household work, limited resources, relationship deterioration etc. contributed to family conflict. While factors of increase quality time, emotional responsiveness, communication, and communal problem solving, contributed to family cohesion. Background: Screening glioma patients regularly for possible mood disorders may facilitate early identification and referral of patients at risk. This study evaluated if the EORTC QLQ‐C30 Emotional Functioning (EF) scale could be used as an initial screening measure to identify patients possibly having a mood disorder. Methods: EORTC QLQ‐C30 EF and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) scores were collected as part of a study assessing the impact of timing of patient‐reported outcome assessments on actual health‐related quality of life outcomes (N = 99). Spearman correlations and Mann‐Whitney U tests were used to determine the association between the EF and HADS (sub)scales. Receiver Operating Characteristic analyses were performed to determine optimal cut‐off EF scores to identify patients possibly having a mood disorder (i.e. HADS subscale score ≥8 points). Results: EF and HADS (sub)scales correlated moderately (HADS‐A: r = −0.65; HADS‐D: r = −0.52). Significant EF score differences were found between patients with HADS ≥8 versus <8 points (HADS‐A: mean difference (MD) = 32 and HADS‐D: MD = 23). The EF scale had excellent (HADS‐A; AUC = 0.88) and borderline excellent (HADS‐D; AUC = 0.78) distinguishing capabilities. A statistically optimal (EF score <80) and a most inclusive (sensitivity of 100%, corresponding to an EF score <97) EF cut‐off score correctly identified 88.0% and 96.0% of patients with a possible mood disorder, respectively. Conclusion: EORTC QLQ‐C30 EF scale seems to be an appropriate screening measure to identify glioma patients possibly having a mood disorder in need of further assessment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The sudden emergence of COVID-19 has led to the confinement of people in homes around the world. In Croatia as well, people were in self-isolation and stayed at home. Since confinement conditions may greatly affect physical and mental health, we investigated the scope of physical activity (PA), well-being and quality of life. A total of 580 adults were surveyed online about PA and health-related quality of life during the lockdown in Croatia. The results have shown that men are more involved in vigorous-intensity PA and have better physical and mental health in almost all domains. When comparing respondents regarding categories of PA, participants with high levels of PA function better physically, have fewer role limitations due to emotional problems and have higher levels of emotional well-being, vitality, and general health. Males, participants with lower BMI, fewer role limitations due to emotional problems, greater vitality and better social functioning have better physical health. Participants who consider that their PA is adequate and engage more in PA, who have fewer role limitations due to physical health, less physical pain, and better general health have better mental health. The results provide insights into the physical and mental components of health during the pandemic. This supports the premise that physical and mental health are highly dependent, and that there is a need to promote the importance of PA, especially for women and those who are less physically active in pandemic times.

Purpose: Breast cancer involves complicated emotional processes. One of the factors that impacts the psychological symptoms and decreases QoL is the side effects of treatment. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of the main medical treatment (chemotherapy or hormone therapy) on the three domains of quality of life. For this, coping strategies were considered as psychological variables that mediate the relationship based on high or low alexithymia as a moderating variable. Methods: This study had a cross-sectional design. The participant sample comprised 129 women with breast cancer in early stage (I to III) (63 receiving chemotherapy and 66 hormone therapy) and were evaluated from September 2015 to September 2019. Physical, emotional and social functioning were measured by the Quality of Life Questionnaire for cancer patients (EORTC-QLQ-C30), coping strategies were measured by Mental Adjustment to Cancer Questionnaire (MAC) and alexithymia was evaluated by the Alexithymia Toronto Scale (TAS-20). Results: Treatment had a significant negative effect on physical domain in both patients receiving chemotherapy and hormone therapy. Moderated mediation analysis show that this relationship was significant when it was mediated by helplessness. Furthermore, this model is only significant when there are high levels of alexithymia. No significant effect direct was found on emotional and social functioning of quality of life. Conclusions: Results confirmed that coping based on helplessness and stable emotional variables such as alexithymia can have an effect, mediator or moderator, respectively, in the decrease of the physical functionality of women with breast cancer. Our findings highlight the need to include psychological therapy to help patients alleviate their psychological state because it can affect their physical condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A sub-sample also participated in a third assessment (T3-December 2020). Participants completed questionnaires assessing their emotional and psychological functioning (i.e., positive and negative affect, perceived social and emotional loneliness, resilience) along with memory tasks (Backward Digit Span task and words list recall). Results: Although individuals reported less positive and more negative emotions during the lockdown than at T2, results showed that older adults displayed overall fewer negative emotions and greater resilience than young adults. The latter were those who reported feeling more emotionally lonely when compared to their older counterpart during the lockdown than afterward. Older adults' advantage in emotional and psychological functioning was also confirmed 7 months after the national lockdown. Only age-related differences in favor of young adults for the memory tasks were found. The measures of interest were also susceptible to mood and/or concerns of COVID-19 effects. Discussion: These findings further highlight the age-related advantage of older adults managing the emotional and psychological experience even when facing an unexpected, prolonged, and unpredictable, stressful life event such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Children with traumatic brain injury (TBI) requiring neurocritical care are at risk for neurocognitive, emotional, physical, and psychosocial difficulties, collectively known as Post-Intensive Care Syndrome. Our study assessed parent-reported emotional functioning and identified risk factors for emotional sequelae in the acute recovery phase. Fifty-three children between 5 and 18 years old hospitalized for TBI were assessed 1-month following discharge. Relevant injury-, child-, and family-specific variables were collected. Emotional functioning was assessed using PROMIS Parent Proxy Report Short Forms for Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms. We used Chi-square tests to evaluate differences between children with and without elevations in anxiety and depressive symptoms. Logistic regression determined predictors of elevations in symptoms among significant variables. Parents frequently endorsed moderate or worse anxiety (45.2%) and depressive (32.1%) symptoms among children. Mechanism of injury and elevated parent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms were associated with elevated anxiety and depressive symptoms, while direct family involvement in the accident/injury was associated only with elevated anxiety symptoms. Results from logistic regression indicated that only elevated parent PTSD symptoms were a significant predictor for child anxiety and depressive symptoms. Anxiety and depressive symptoms are prevalent in the acute recovery phase of TBI. Consistent with previous research, elevations in anxiety and depressive symptoms were more related to psychosocial factors than injury severity. High levels of parent PTSD symptoms and their relationship with children's internalizing symptoms highlight the need for mental health treatment for TBI patients and their families. Some individuals exposed to early life stress show evidence of enhanced systemic inflammation and are at greater risk for psychopathology. In the current study, caregivers and their offspring (0–17 years) were recruited at a pediatric clinic visit at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Mothers and seven-year-old children from the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) prospective birth cohort were used as a replication cohort. Caregivers perceived stress was measured to determine potential intergenerational effects on the children's functioning and inflammation levels. Children's emotional functioning in the UCSF cohort was evaluated using the Pediatric Quality of Life (PedsQL) inventory. Child emotional and behavioral functioning was measured using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) in GUSTO. Saliva was collected from the children and salivary levels of IL-6, IL-1β, IL-8 and TNF-α were measured using an electrochemiluminescent cytokine multiplex panel. Child IL-6, IL-1β, IL-8 cytokine levels were clustered into low, average, and high cytokine cluster groups using hierarchical cluster analysis. We did not find that salivary cytokine clusters were significantly associated with children's emotional or behavioral function. However, cytokine clusters did significantly moderate the association between increased caregiver perceived stress and reduced child emotional functioning (UCSF cohort) and increased Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity (ADH) problems (GUSTO cohort, uncorrected Cohen's F2 = 0.02). Using a cytokine clustering technique may be useful in identifying those children exposed to increased caregiver perceived stress that are at risk of emotional and attention deficit hyperactivity problems. The aim of this study was to explore effectiveness of Positive Intelligence training on the Emotional Intelligence of employees. In a semi-experimental design with a pre-test post-test paradigm about 80 employees filled the emotional intelligence Tests and 30 individuals with lower score in EI were selected after checking the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Subjects divided to equal experimental and control groups randomly (n=15). Subjects of the experimental group were received 6 sessions of 120 minutes group training of positive intelligence, while no intervention administered on the control group except the simple meeting with the examiner. Participants of both groups were completed again the EI questionnaires afterwards. Data extracted and analyzed by a MANCOVA statistical analysis. Results were shown significantly differences between two groups in the EI total scores and its 4 sub-components. The positive intelligence training program could successfully improve the emotional intelligence of employees of the Securities and Exchange Organization and is then recommended for employees of this organization.

Methods Five hundred and forty‐four participants (85.1% female; mean age 21, SD = 4.3) completed the Eating Attitudes Test, Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, Social Phobia Inventory, Revised Social Anhedonia Scale, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, and the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Task. Results One hundred and sixty‐four participants scored over the EAT‐26 clinical cutoff, and a two‐way multivariate analysis of covariance found a medium‐sized, statistically significant main effect of group on social–emotional functioning (F(5, 530) = 6.204, p ≤ .001, Wilks' Λ = 0.945, d = 0.48.), suggesting that individuals with significant ED symptoms found it more challenging to notice, label, and regulate emotions in themselves and recognize emotions in others. Gender did not significantly impact social–emotional functioning (F(10, 1,060) = 0.556, p = .850, Wilks' Λ = 0.990), and there was no significant group by gender interaction (F(10, 1,060) = 0.688, p = .737, Wilks' Λ = 0.987). Conclusion These data suggest that the social–emotional difficulties, particularly with emotion recognition and regulation, present in clinical samples are also evident in young people of all genders with significant disordered eating. Future work could aim to recruit an even more gender‐diverse community sample to further elucidate social–emotional functioning in individuals in the community with significant disordered eating.

Objective: This study is a meta-analysis that considers the association between dyadic coping and emotional functioning, and between dyadic coping and the quality of the relationship as perceived by cancer patients and their life partners.Methods: A systematic search was conducted in the electronic databases PsycINFO, PubMed, ScienceDirect and those peer-reviewed cross-sectional and longitudinal studies published up until April 2020 that investigated these relationships were selected.Results: A total of 1,168 studies were identified, of which 10 met the inclusion criteria (N = 1,727 couples). These evidenced statistically significant positive relationships between common dyadic coping and emotional functioning and between common dyadic coping and the quality of the relationship as perceived by patients and their partners. There was also a statistically significant positive association between stress communication (by oneself), supportive dyadic coping (by oneself and by partner), and the quality of the relationship. In addition, a statistically significant negative association was found between negative dyadic coping (by oneself and by partner) and the quality of the relationship as perceived by patients' partners and also between negative dyadic coping (by oneself) and the quality of the relationship as perceived by patients.Conclusions: The results suggest the existence of a significant association between dyadic coping and emotional functioning and between dyadic coping and the quality of the relationship as perceived by members of couples facing cancer. However, these results must be interpreted with caution due to the small number of studies included in the analysis. Clinically, an understanding of the existence of such relationships is helpful for the implementation, and study of the effectiveness of, interventions aimed at improving dyadic coping in order to improve both quality of life and quality of relationship in couples where there is an oncological diagnosis.

Purpose: To improve our understanding of the behavioral, social, and emotional functioning of children and adolescents with Pompe disease. Method: Parents/guardians of 21 children (age 5-18y) with infantile (IPD) or late-onset (LOPD) Pompe disease on long-term enzyme replacement therapy completed three standardized checklists regarding their child's behavior: the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), Conners 3 Parent (Conners-3), Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-2 (BRIEF2), and a survey of their child's educational services. Results: Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the findings for each behavior checklist. Age standard scores from each checklist were reported for the IPD (n = 17, 9 females, mean age = 9y, 4 mo; SD = 3y, 8mo) and LOPD (n = 4, 1 female; mean = 11y, 2mo; SD = 2y, 1mo) groups. The majority of children with Pompe exhibited age-appropriate behavior and emotional functioning on these standardized checklists. However, negative mood symptoms, learning problems, decreased participation in structured social activities, and attentional difficulties were more frequently reported in children with IPD in comparison to same-aged peers. Parents of children with LOPD reported fewer problematic behaviors but endorsed negative mood symptoms and difficulties with peer relations. Most children received accommodations in regular education classrooms at school. Conclusions: These standardized behavior checklists are useful screening tools for the early identification and treatment of behavior, emotional, and social concerns in children with Pompe disease.

Chronic illness is a strong stressor, and its occurrence in human life forces the individual to make adaptive changes. The aim of the study was to evaluate the reactions, behaviors, and emotional states of a person in the face of systemic connective tissue disease and ways of coping with this difficult situation. The method of choice was an individual case study. The subject was a 41-year-old patient, diagnosed with diffuse systemic sclerosis (dSSc) 8 years previously. The patient was characterized by lowered self-esteem, the presence of depressive symptoms, low level of hope for success, a reduced sense of competence, a tendency to use stress coping strategies focused on emotions and dominance of anxiety and tension. Emotional stress coping strategies, low level of hope for success, and non-acceptance attitude predispose the person suffering from systemic sclerosis (SSc) to exhibit depressive symptoms.

Though comprehensive, the NIHTB-EB’s 17 scales may be unwieldy for users aiming to capture more global indices of emotional functioning. Methods: NIHTB-EB was administered to 1,036 English-speaking and 408 Spanish-speaking adults as a part of the NIH Toolbox norming project. We examined the factor structure of the NIHTB-EB in English- and Spanish-speaking adults and developed factor analysis-based summary scores. Census-weighted norms were presented for English speakers, and sample-weighted norms were presented for Spanish speakers. Results: Exploratory factor analysis for both English- and Spanish-speaking cohorts resulted in the same 3-factor solution: 1) negative affect, 2) social satisfaction, and 3) psychological well-being. Confirmatory factor analysis supported similar factor structures for English- and Spanish-speaking cohorts. Model fit indices fell within the acceptable/good range, and our final solution was optimal compared to other solutions. Conclusion: Summary scores based upon the normative samples appear to be psychometrically supported and should be applied to clinical samples to further validate the factor structures and investigate rates of problematic emotions in medical and psychiatric populations. Mental health issues are reaching epidemic proportions among our youth. Understanding factors associated with emotional and physical functioning are critical to developing effective interventions and preventive strategies. Despite evidence of the association of cognitive fusion and emotional and physical health among adults, little is known about how this is associated with emotional and physical well-being in emerging adulthood. The purpose of this study was to examine how cognitive fusion is associated with different domains of health after controlling for psychosocial variables. A sample of 353 undergraduate students completed measures on sleep, stress (Perceived Stress Scale- 14), domains of health (Medical Outcomes Study Short Form Survey), the five facets of dispositional mindfulness (Five Facet Mindfulness Scale), social support (Lubben Social Network Scale), and cognitive fusion (Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire). Using step-wise hierarchal multiple regression, we examined the variance accounted for by health behaviors and psychosocial variables in various domains of health (emotional, physical, social, general health, fatigue/energy, pain and limitations from physical/emotional functioning). After controlling for psychosocial variables and sleep, cognitive fusion was a significant predictor of six out of eight domains of health. In the domains of physical functioning and general health, facets of mindfulness (nonjudging and awareness, respectively) emerged as significant factors. This study suggests that cognitive fusion plays an important role in some areas of health for emerging adults, even more so than other established predictors. Among emerging adults, it appears that thoughts play a key role in well-being and cognitive defusion techniques may be useful to enhance health among this population. • Cognitive fusion was a significant predictor for emotional and social functioning. • Cognitive fusion was not a significant predictor for physical functioning. • Cognitive fusion was a predictor for role limitations due to physical functioning. Aim: This study aims to describe health-related quality of life (HRQL), identify factors associated with HRQL physical and mental health domains, and explore the association between perceived social supports and HRQL among cancer palliative patients in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study is applied. The validated European Organization for Cancer Research and Treatment, the EORTC QLQ-15 palliative care scale and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) have been used. A convenience sample of (N=301) palliative cancer patients was collected from two main regional cancer centers in Riyadh. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. Results: Results indicate that overall quality of life showed a significant positive correlation with perceived family and friend support, sub-factors of perceived social support. Regression analysis showed that the overall model experienced 69.0% of the variance for global health statutes with F (4, 7) = 7.149 P < 0.001. Physical functioning, emotional functioning, and family support were found to be significant predictors of global health status. Family and Friend support were found to be significant positive predictors of emotional functioning. Conclusions: The inpatient and outpatient treatment can vary at different stages and in different areas, family and friend support has been highlighted as necessary in this context. Physical and emotional factors have been demonstrated in older age (geriatric) patients as they may have debilitating diseases that can limit their functioning hence support the case for more palliative care.
