Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) graphene and graphene-related materials (GRMs) show great promise for future electronic devices. GRMs exhibit distinct properties under the influence of the substrate that serves as support through uneven compression/ elongation of GRMs surface atoms. Strain in GRM monolayers is the most common feature that alters the interatomic distances and band structure, providing a new degree of freedom that allows regulation of their electronic properties and introducing the field of straintronics. Having an all-optical and minimally invasive detection tool that rapidly probes strain in large areas of GRM monolayers, would be of great importance in the research and development of novel 2D devices. Here, we use Polarization-resolved Second Harmonic Generation (P-SHG) optical imaging to identify strain distribution, induced in a single layer of WS2 placed on a pre-patterned Si/SiO2 substrate with cylindrical wells. By fitting the P-SHG data pixel-by-pixel, we produce spatially resolved images of the crystal armchair direction. In regions where the WS2 monolayer conforms to the pattern topography, a distinct cross-shaped pattern is evident in the armchair image owing to strain. The presence of strain in these regions is independently confirmed using a combination of atomic force microscopy and Raman mapping.

Nanoscale-engineered surfaces induce regulated strain in atomic layers of 2D materials that could be useful for unprecedented photonics applications and for storing and processing quantum information. Nevertheless, these strained structures need to be investigated extensively. Here, we present texture-induced strain distribution in single-layer WS2 (1L-WS2) transferred over Si/SiO2 (285 nm) substrate. The detailed nanoscale landscapes and their optical detection are carried out through Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and optical spectroscopy. Remarkable differences have been observed in the WS2 sheet localized in the confined well and at the periphery of the cylindrical geometry of the capped engineered surface. Raman spectroscopy independently maps the whole landscape of the samples, and temperature-dependent helicity-resolved photoluminescence (PL) experiments (off-resonance excitation) show that suspended areas sustain circular polarization from 150 K up to 300 K, in contrast to supported (on un-patterned area of Si/SiO2) and strained 1L-WS2. Our study highlights the impact of the dielectric environment on the optical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials, providing valuable insights into the selection of appropriate substrates for implementing atomically thin materials in advanced optoelectronic devices.

Nanoliposomes are nano-sized vesicles that can be used as drug delivery carriers with the ability to encapsulate both hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds. Moreover, their lipid compositions facilitate their internalization by cells. However, the interaction between nanoliposomes and the membrane barrier of the human body is not well-known. If cellular tests and animal testing offer a solution, their lack of physiological relevance and ethical concerns make them unsuitable to properly mimic human body complexity. Microfluidics, which allows the environment of the human body to be imitated in a controlled way, can fulfil this role. However, existing models are missing the presence of something that would mimic a basal membrane, often consisting of a simple cell layer on a polymer membrane. In this study, we investigated the diffusion of nanoliposomes in a microfluidic system and found the optimal parameters to maximize their diffusion. Then, we incorporated a custom made GelMA with a controlled degree of substitution and studied the passage of fluorescently labeled nanoliposomes through this barrier. Our results show that highly substituted GelMA was more porous than lower substitution GelMA. Overall, our work lays the foundation for the incorporation of a hydrogel mimicking a basal membrane on a drug delivery microfluidic platform.

We herein present a simple, fast, low-temperature, post-glass melting fabrication protocol in which a photochromic silver cation based modified zone is incorporated within silver metaphosphate glass (AgPO3). The selection of AgPO3 glass is mainly based on its relative “soft” nature (Tg = 192 °C) that enables the integration of silver cations from the surface deposited AgCl layer, while being transparent in most of the visible range, and therefore suitable for smart photochromic window applications. The suggested synthesis procedure permits the controlled formation of a silver cation modified layer within the host glass matrix, while the characteristics of the layer itself can be adjusted correspondingly. Our findings reveal a direct relationship between the developed composite AgCl–AgPO3 glass photochromic response and the morphological features of the integrated layer, i.e., thickness and position. More importantly, the photochromic response time with various UV irradiation doses is also studied, where remarkable response times of several seconds are obtained. Processes and efforts to further enhance the photochromic performance by utilizing the presence of silver nanoparticles within the glass matrix are also presented and discussed.

Abstract We present polarization-sensitive gap surface plasmon metasurfaces fabricated with direct material processing using pulsed laser light, an alternative and versatile approach. In particular we imprint laser induced periodic surface structures on nanometer-thick Ni films, which are back-plated by a grounded dielectric layer with TiO2 and ZnO deposition followed by Au evaporation. The procedure results in a metal-insulator-metal type plasmonic metasurface with a corrugated top layer consisting of highly-ordered, sinusoidal shaped, periodic, thin, metallic nanowires. The metasurface sustains sharp, resonant gap surface plasmons and provides various opportunities for polarization control in reflection, which is here switched by the size and infiltrating material of the insulating cavity. The polarization control is associated with the polarization sensitive perfect absorption and leads to high extinction ratios in the near-IR and mid-IR spectral areas. Corresponding Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy measurements experimentally demonstrate that the fabrication approach produces metasurfaces with very well-defined, controllable, sharp resonances and polarization sensitive resonant absorption response which, depending on the insulating cavity size, impacts either the normal or the parallel to the nanowires polarization.

Despite that organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites have attracted enormous scientific attention for energy conversion applications over the recent years, the influence of temperature and the type of the employed hole transport layer (HTL) on the charge carrier dynamics and recombination processes in perovskite photovoltaic devices is still largely unexplored. In particular, significant knowledge is missing on how these crucial parameters for radiative and non-radiative recombinations, as well as for efficient charge extraction vary among different perovskite crystalline phases that are induced by temperature variation. Herein, we perform micro photoluminescence (μPL) and ultrafast time resolved transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) in Glass/Perovskite and two different Glass/ITO/HTL/Perovskite configurations at temperatures below room temperature, in order to probe the charge carrier dynamics of different perovskite crystalline phases, while considering also the effect of the employed HTL polymer. Namely, CH3NH3PbI3 films were deposited on Glass, PEDOT:PSS and PTAA polymers, and the developed Glass/CH3NH3PbI3 and Glass/ITO/HTL/CH3NH3PbI3 architectures were studied from 85 K up to 215 K in order to explore the charge extraction dynamics of the CH3NH3PbI3 orthorhombic and tetragonal crystalline phases. It is observed an unusual blueshift of the bandgap with temperature and the dual emission at temperature below of 100 K and also, that the charge carrier dynamics, as expressed by hole injection times and free carrier recombination rates, are strongly depended on the actual pervoskite crystal phase, as well as, from the selected hole transport material.

Highly-sensitive and stable ozone and hydrogen sensing elements were fabricated based on well-crystalline rounded cube-shaped CsPbBr3 microcrystals, synthesized by a facile solution process performed under ambient conditions. It is shown that such elements demonstrate enhanced room temperature gas sensing ability compared to the previously reported metal halide and oxide-based ones. Electrical measurements performed on these sensing components revealed high sensitivity to ultra-low ozone and hydrogen concentrations, namely 4 ppb and 1 ppm respectively, as well as a remarkable repeatability, even after a few months of storage in ambient conditions. Both ozone and hydrogen sensors were self-activated, as they did not require the use of UV or heating external stimuli to operate, and exhibited fast detection and short restoration times. All such attractive properties along with the simple fabrication process could provide an easy, efficient and low-cost technology for the realization of future gas sensing devices.

We present a novel approach for tailoring the laser induced surface topography upon femtosecond (fs) pulsed laser irradiation. The method employs spatially controlled double fs laser pulses to actively regulate the hydrodynamic microfluidic motion of the melted layer that gives rise to the structures formation. The pulse train used, in particular, consists of a previously unexplored spatiotemporal intensity combination including one pulse with Gaussian and another with periodically modulated intensity distribution created by Direct Laser Interference Patterning (DLIP). The interpulse delay is appropriately chosen to reveal the contribution of the microfluidic melt flow, while it is found that the sequence of the Gaussian and DLIP pulses remarkably influences the surface profile attained. Results also demonstrate that both the spatial intensity of the double pulse and the effective number of pulses per irradiation spot can further be modulated to control the formation of complex surface morphologies. The underlying physical processes behind the complex patterns’ generation were interpreted in terms of a multiscale model combining electron excitation with melt hydrodynamics. We believe that this work can constitute a significant step forward towards producing laser induced surface structures on demand by tailoring the melt microfluidic phenomena.

Whereas the axons of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) spontaneously regenerate after an injury, the occurring regeneration is rarely successful because axons are usually directed by inappropriate cues. Therefore, finding successful ways to guide neurite outgrowth, in vitro, is essential for neurogenesis. Microfluidic systems reflect more appropriately the in vivo environment of cells in tissues such as the normal fluid flow within the body, consistent nutrient delivery, effective waste removal, and mechanical stimulation due to fluid shear forces. At the same time, it has been well reported that topography affects neuronal outgrowth, orientation, and differentiation. In this review, we demonstrate how topography and microfluidic flow affect neuronal behavior, either separately or in synergy, and highlight the efficacy of microfluidic systems in promoting neuronal outgrowth.

Schwann cells (SCs), the glial cells of the peripheral nervous system (PNS), do not only form myelin sheaths thereby insulating the electrical signal propagated by the axons, but also play an essential role in the regeneration of injured axons. SCs are inextricably connected with their extracellular environment and the mechanical stimuli that are received determine their response during development, myelination and injuries. To this end, the mechanobiological response of SCs is being actively researched, as it can determine the suitability of fabricated scaffolds for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. There is growing evidence that SCs are sensitive to changes in the mechanical properties of the surrounding environment (such as the type of material, its elasticity and stiffness), different topographical features provided by the environment, as well as shear stress. In this review, we explore how different mechanical stimuli affect SC behaviour and highlight the importance of exploring many different avenues when designing scaffolds for the repair of PNS injuries.

In this study, we revealed a peculiar morphological feature of 50B11 nociceptive sensory neurons in in vitro culture related to the forskolin-induced differentiation of these cells growing upside-down on cover glass supports. Multi-photon non-linear microscopy was applied to monitor increased neurite arborization and elongation. Under live and unstained conditions, second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy could monitor microtubule organization inside the cells while also correlating with the detection of cellular multi-photon autofluorescence, probably derived from mitochondria metabolites. Although the differentiated cells of each compartment did not differ significantly in tubulin or multi-photon autofluorescence contents, the upturned neurons were more elongated, presenting a higher length/width cellular ratio and longer neurites, indicative of differentiated cells. SHG originating from the axons’ microtubules represented a proper tool to study neurons’ inverted culture in live conditions without exogenous staining. This work represents the first instance of examining neuronal cell lines growing and differentiated in an upside-down orientation, allowing a possible improvement of 50B11 as a model in physiology studies of sensory neurons in peripheric nervous system disease (e.g., Fabry disease, Friedreich ataxia, Charcot–Marie–Tooth, porphyria, type 1 diabetes, Guillain–Barré syndrome in children) and analgesic drug screening.

Abstract Degenerate minima in momentum space—valleys—provide an additional degree of freedom that can be used for information transport and storage. Notably, such minima naturally exist in the band structure of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). When these atomically thin crystals interact with intense laser light, the second harmonic generated (SHG) field inherits special characteristics that reflect not only the broken inversion symmetry in real space but also the valley anisotropy in reciprocal space. The latter is present whenever there exists a valley population imbalance (VPI) between the two valleys and affects the polarization state of the detected SHG. In this work, it is shown that the temperature-induced change of the SHG intensity dependence on the excitation field polarization is a fingerprint of VPI in TMDs. In particular, pixel-by-pixel VPI mapping based on polarization-resolved raster-scanning imaging microscopy was performed inside a cryostat to generate the SHG contrast in the presence of VPI from every point of a TMD flake. The generated contrast is marked by rotation of the SHG intensity polar diagrams at low temperatures and is attributed to the VPI-induced SHG.

The fabrication of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) over extended areas at high processing speeds requires the use of high repetition rate femtosecond lasers. It is known that industrially relevant materials such as steel experience heat accumulation when irradiated at repetition rates above some hundreds of kHz, and significant debris redeposition can take place. However, there are few studies on how the laser repetition rate influences both the debris deposition and the final LIPSS morphology. In this work, we present a study of fs laser-induced fabrication of low spatial frequency LIPSS (LSFL), with pulse repetition rates ranging from 10 kHz to 2 MHz on commercially available steel. The morphology of the laser-structured areas as well as the redeposited debris was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and µ-Raman spectroscopy. To identify repetition rate ranges where heat accumulation is present during the irradiations, we developed a simple heat accumulation model that solves the heat equation in 1 dimension implementing a Forward differencing in Time and Central differencing in Space (FTCS) scheme. Contact angle measurements with water demonstrated the influence of heat accumulation and debris on the functional wetting behavior. The findings are directly relevant for the processing of metals using high repetition rate femtosecond lasers, enabling the identification of optimum conditions in terms of desired morphology, functionality, and throughput.

Femtosecond direct laser writing is a well-established and robust technique for the fabrication of photonic structures. Herein, we report on the fabrication of buried waveguides in AgPO3 silver metaphosphate glasses, as well as, on the erase and re-writing of those structures, by means of a single femtosecond laser source. Based on the fabrication procedure, the developed waveguides can be erased and readily re-inscribed upon further femtosecond irradiation under controlled conditions. Namely, for the initial waveguide writing the employed laser irradiation power was 2 J/cm2 with a scanning speed of 5 mm/s and a repetition rate of 200 kHz. Upon enhancing the power to 16 J/cm2 while keeping constant the scanning speed and reducing the repetition rate to 25 kHz, the so formed patterns were readily erased. Then, upon using a laser power of 2 J/cm2 with a scanning speed of 1 mm/s and a repetition rate of 200 kHz the waveguide patterns were re-written inside the glass. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images at the cross-section of the processed glasses, combined with spatial Raman analysis revealed that the developed write/erase/re-write cycle, does not cause any structural modification to the phosphate network, rendering the fabrication process feasible for reversible optoelectronic applications. Namely, it is proposed that this non-ablative phenomenon lies on the local relaxation of the glass network caused by the heat deposited upon pulsed laser irradiation. The resulted waveguide patterns Our findings pave the way towards new photonic applications involving infinite cycles of write/erase/re-write processes without the need of intermediate steps of typical thermal annealing treatments.

Abstract The family of emerging low‐symmetry and structural in‐plane anisotropic two‐dimensional (2D) materials has been expanding rapidly in recent years. As an important emerging anisotropic 2D material, the black phosphorene analog group IVA–VI metal monochalcogenides (MMCs) have been surged recently due to their distinctive crystalline symmetries, exotic in‐plane anisotropic electronic and optical response, earth abundance, and environmentally friendly characteristics. In this article, the recent research advancements in the field of anisotropic 2D MMCs are reviewed. At first, the unique wavy crystal structures together with the optical and electronic properties of such materials are discussed. The Review continues with the various methods adopted for the synthesis of layered MMCs including micromechanical and liquid phase exfoliation as well as physical vapor deposition. The last part of the article focuses on the application of the structural anisotropic response of 2D MMCs in field effect transistors, photovoltaic cells nonlinear optics, and valleytronic devices. Besides presenting the significant research in the field of this emerging class of 2D materials, this Review also delineates the existing limitations and discusses emerging possibilities and future prospects.

Metal halide perovskites have been recently proposed as hopeful materials for energy storage applications. Besides, the quite important electrochemical characteristics of these materials, all the perovskite-based anodes are synthesized at high temperatures (90–150 °C) and with reaction durations of the order of tens of hours. In this work, it has been particularly shown that the direct growth of all-inorganic, metal halide microcrystals free of ligands, provides high-performance and stable electrodes for Li-air batteries. We describe a very simple and rapid method to synthesize well-crystalline and ultra-stable, at both ambient and aqueous conditions, CsPbBr3 microcubes, exhibiting prominent electrochemical performance. In particular, it is shown that during the successive scans in which the Li-ions intercalate and deintercalate, the microcubes-based anodes showed a high specific capacity of 549 mAh·g−1 and operation durability up to 1500 cycles. The large interfacial area between the perovskite electroactive material and the electrolyte along with the increase of the active sites on the exposed microcubes facets favor the Li-ions intercalation. It is concluded that the anodes presented here demonstrate the best electrochemical features among the nano- and microparticulate lead halide perovskite anodes used for Li-air batteries, to date.

The growth in novel synthesis methods and in the range of possible applications has led to the development of a large variety of manufactured nanomaterials (MNMs), which can, in principle, come into close contact with humans and be dispersed in the environment. The nanomaterials interact with the surrounding environment, this being either the proteins and/or cells in a biological medium or the matrix constituent in a dispersion or composite, and an interface is formed whose properties depend on the physicochemical interactions and on colloidal forces. The development of predictive relationships between the characteristics of individual MNMs and their potential practical use critically depends on how the key parameters of MNMs, such as the size, shape, surface chemistry, surface charge, surface coating, etc., affect the behavior in a test medium. This relationship between the biophysicochemical properties of the MNMs and their practical use is defined as their functionality; understanding this relationship is very important for the safe use of these nanomaterials. In this mini review, we attempt to identify the key parameters of nanomaterials and establish a relationship between these and the main MNM functionalities, which would play an important role in the safe design of MNMs; thus, reducing the possible health and environmental risks early on in the innovation process, when the functionality of a nanomaterial and its toxicity/safety will be taken into account in an integrated way. This review aims to contribute to a decision tree strategy for the optimum design of safe nanomaterials, by going beyond the compromise between functionality and safety.

Femtosecond laser induced changes on the topography of stainless steel with double pulses is investigated to reveal the role of parameters such as the fluence, the energy dose and the interpulse delay on the features of the produced patterns. Our results indicate that short pulse separation (Δτ = 5 ps) favors the formation of 2D Low Spatially Frequency Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LSFL) while longer interpulse delays (Δτ = 20 ps) lead to 2D High Spatially Frequency LIPSS (HSFL). The detailed investigation is complemented with an analysis of the produced surface patterns and characterization of their wetting and cell-adhesion properties. A correlation between the surface roughness and the contact angle is presented which confirms that topographies of variable roughness and complexity exhibit different wetting properties. Furthermore, our analysis indicates that patterns with different spatial characteristics demonstrate variable cell adhesion response which suggests that the methodology can be used as a strategy towards the fabrication of tailored surfaces for the development of functional implants.

Metal halide perovskite nanocrystals, an emerging class of materials for advanced photonic and optoelectronic applications, are mainly fabricated with colloidal chemistry routes. On the quest for new properties according to application needs, new perovskite systems of various morphologies and levels of doping and alloying have been developed, often also involving post-synthesis reactions. Recently, laser irradiation in liquids has been utilized as a fast method to synthesize or transform materials and interesting laser-induced transformations on nanocrystals were induced. These studies in general have been limited to small nanocrystals (~15 nm). In the case of halide perovskites, fragmentation or anion exchange have been observed in such laser-based processes, but no crystal structure transformations were actually observed or deliberately studied. Nanocrystals are more sensitive to light exposure compared to the corresponding bulk crystals. Additional factors, such as size, morphology, the presence of impurities, and others, can intricately affect the photon absorption and heat dissipation in nanocrystal suspensions during laser irradiation. All these factors can play an important role in the final morphologies and in the time required for these transformations to unfold. In the present work, we have employed a 513 nm femtosecond (fs) laser to induce different transformations in large nanocrystals, in which two phases coexist in the same particle (Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3 nanohexagons of ~100 nm), dispersed in dichlorobenzene. These transformations include: (i) the exfoliation of the primary nanohexagons and partial anion exchange; (ii) fragmentation in smaller nanocubes and partial anion exchange; (iii) side-by-side-oriented attachment, fusion, and formation of nanoplatelets and complete anion exchange; (iv) side-by-side attachment, fusion, and formation of nanosheets. Partial or complete Br-Cl anion exchange in the above transformations was triggered by the partial degradation of dichlorobenzene. In addition to the detailed analysis of the various nanocrystal morphologies observed in the various transformations, the structure–photoluminescence relationships for the different samples were analyzed and discussed.

The replication of complex structures found in nature represents an enormous challenge even for advanced fabrication techniques, such as laser processing. For certain applications, not only the surface topography needs to be mimicked, but often also a specific function of the structure. An alternative approach to laser direct writing of complex structures is the generation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS), which is based on directed self-organization of the material and allows fabrication of specific micro- and nanostructures over extended areas. In this work, we exploit this approach to fabricate complex biomimetic structures on the surface of steel 1.7131 formed upon irradiation with high repetition rate femtosecond laser pulses. In particular, the fabricated structures show similarities to the skin of certain reptiles and integument of insects. Different irradiation parameters are investigated to produce the desired structures, including laser repetition rate and laser fluence, paying special attention to the influence of the number of times the same area is rescanned with the laser. The latter parameter is identified to be crucial for controlling the morphology and size of specific structures. As an example for the functionality of the structures, we have chosen the surface wettability and studied its dependence on the laser processing parameters. Contact angle measurements of water drops placed on the surface reveal that a wide range of angles can be accessed by selecting the appropriate irradiation parameters, highlighting also here the prominent role of the number of scans.

The efficiency of light coupling to surface plasmon polariton (SPP) represents a very important issue in plasmonics and laser fabrication of topographies in various solids. To illustrate the role of pre-patterned surfaces and impact of laser polarisation in the excitation of electromagnetic modes and periodic pattern formation, Nickel surfaces are irradiated with femtosecond laser pulses of polarisation perpendicular or parallel to the orientation of the pre-pattern ridges. Experimental results indicate that for polarisation parallel to the ridges, laser induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) are formed perpendicularly to the pre-pattern with a frequency that is independent of the distance between the ridges and periodicities close to the wavelength of the excited SPP. By contrast, for polarisation perpendicular to the pre-pattern, the periodicities of the LIPSS are closely correlated to the distance between the ridges for pre-pattern distance larger than the laser wavelength. The experimental observations are interpreted through a multi-scale physical model in which the impact of the interference of the electromagnetic modes is revealed.

The surface plasmon resonance properties of highly regular laser-induced periodic surface structures (HR-LIPSSs) on Si, functionalized with Au nanoparticles (NPs), were investigated. In particular, the spectral dependencies of polarized light reflectance at various angles of incidence were measured and discussed. It is found that the deposition of Au NPs on such periodically textured substrates leads to significant enhancement of the plasmon resonance properties, compared to that measured on planar ones. This effect can be used to improve the efficiency of localized-plasmon-resonance-based sensors.

Ultrafast laser processing with the formation of periodic surface nanostructures on the 15×(Ti/Zr)/Si multilayers is studied in order to the improve cell response. A novel nanocomposite structure in the form of 15×(Ti/Zr)/Si multilayer thin films, with satisfying mechanical properties and moderate biocompatibility, was deposited by ion sputtering on an Si substrate. The multilayer 15×(Ti/Zr)/Si thin films were modified by femtosecond laser pulses in air to induce the following modifications: (i) mixing of components inside of the multilayer structures, (ii) the formation of an ultrathin oxide layer at the surfaces, and (iii) surface nano-texturing with the creation of laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS). The focus of this study was an examination of the novel Ti/Zr multilayer thin films in order to create a surface texture with suitable composition and structure for cell integration. Using the SEM and confocal microscopies of the laser-modified Ti/Zr surfaces with seeded cell culture (NIH 3T3 fibroblasts), it was found that cell adhesion and growth depend on the surface composition and morphological patterns. These results indicated a good proliferation of cells after two and four days with some tendency of the cell orientation along the LIPSSs.

Experimental results are presented on laser-assisted synthesis of composite nanoparticles of perovskite BaTiO3 with gold nanoparticles using the technique of laser ablation in water and aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide. Nanoparticles of BaTiO3 are generated by near IR laser radiation with pulse durations of 170 fs, 1 ps, and 200 ns. Nanoparticles of barium titanate BaTiO3 (BTO) have tetragonal structure for all used pulse durations. Two ways of synthesis are tested. In the first one a gold target is ablated in the colloidal solution of BaTiO3 nanoparticles. The second way consists of laser exposure of the mixture of colloidal solutions of nanoparticles of BaTiO3 and Au. Synthesized composite nanoparticles are characterized by optical spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-Ray diffractometry, and Transmission Electron Microscopy. Composite BaTiO3‑Au nanoparticles have the absorption band in the visible range of spectrum and demonstrate plasmonic luminescence.

The influence of material characteristics—i.e., type or surface texture—to wetting properties is nowadays increased by the implementation of ultrafast lasers for nanostructuring. In this account, we exposed multilayer thin metal film samples of different materials to a femtosecond laser beam at a 1030 nm wavelength. The interaction generated high-quality laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) of spatial periods between 740 and 790 nm and with maximal average corrugation height below 100 nm. The contact angle (CA) values of the water droplets on the surface were estimated and the values between unmodified and modified samples were compared. Even though the laser interaction changed both the surface morphology and the chemical composition, the wetting properties were predominantly influenced by the small change in morphology causing the increase in the contact angle of ~80%, which could not be explained classically. The influence of both surface corrugation and chemical composition to the wetting properties has been thoroughly investigated, discussed and explained. The presented results clearly confirm that femtosecond patterning can be used to mold wetting properties.

This study was aimed at the production and characterization of coated cotton textiles with luminescent ceramic nanophases doped with cationic Ir(III) tetrazole complexes. We confirmed that SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) do not affect the phosphorescent properties of the complexes that maintain their emission (610 and 490 nm). For the first time we transferred the luminescence feature from nanosol to textile surface, highlighting the advantages of using nanosilica as an encapsulating and stabilizing matrix. The optimized Ir@SiO2 suspensions were homogenously applied onto the cotton surface by dip-pad-dry-cure technique, as proved by the 2p-fluorescence microscope analysis. Once we verified the self-marker properties of the Ir(III) complex, we observed an excellent washing fastness of the coating with a very limited release. SiO2 in the washing water was quantified at maximum around 1.5 wt% and Ir below the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) detection limit of 1 ppm. A Franz cell test was used to evaluate any possible ex-vivo uptake of Ir@SiO2 nanoparticles across human skin tissues, showing that epidermis and dermis stop over 99% of Ir, implying a reduced impact on human health. The light-induced antimicrobial potential of the Ir@SiO2 were assessed toward both Gram(−) and Gram(+) bacteria. The results encouraged further developments of such functional textiles coated by self-markers and antibacterial active nanophases.

We report on a facile and rapid photo-induced process to conjugate graphene-based materials with metal-halide perovskite nanocrystals. We show that a small number of laser pulses is sufficient to decorate the 2-dimensional (2D) flakes with metal-halide nanocrystals without affecting their primary morphology. At the same time, the density of anchored nanocrystals could be finely tuned by the number of irradiation pulses. This facile and rapid room temperature method provides unique opportunities for the design and development of perovskite-2D nanoconjugates, exhibiting synergetic functionality by combining nanocrystals of different morphologies and chemical phases with various 2D materials.

This study describes the application of multi-walled carbon nanotubes that were nitrogen-doped during their synthesis (N-MWCNTs) in melt-mixed polypropylene (PP) composites. Different types of N-MWCNTs, synthesized using different methods, were used and compared. Four of the five MWCNT grades showed negative Seebeck coefficients (S), indicating n-type charge carrier behavior. All prepared composites (with a concentration between 2 and 7.5 wt% N-MWCNTs) also showed negative S values, which in most cases had a higher negative value than the corresponding nanotubes. The S values achieved were between 1.0 μV/K and −13.8 μV/K for the N-MWCNT buckypapers or powders and between −4.7 μV/K and −22.8 μV/K for the corresponding composites. With a higher content of N-MWCNTs, the increase in electrical conductivity led to increasing values of the power factor (PF) despite the unstable behavior of the Seebeck coefficient. The highest power factor was achieved with 4 wt% N-MWCNT, where a suitable combination of high electrical conductivity and acceptable Seebeck coefficient led to a PF value of 6.1 × 10−3 µW/(m·K2). First experiments have shown that transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) is a useful tool to study the carrier transfer process in CNTs in composites and to correlate it with the Seebeck coefficient.

The hydrodynamic mechanisms associated with the formation of femtosecond laser induced ripples on copper for two angles of incidence are reported. Laser pulse length used for this work is 35 fs. A revised two-temperature model is presented that comprises transient changes of optical characteristics during the irradiation with femtosecond pulses to model relaxation processes and thermal response in bulk copper. The theoretical model takes into account the fluid flow dynamics that result in ripple periods shorter than the wavelength of the surface plasmon polaritons. Theoretical and experimental results are reported for incident angles of 0° and 45° relative to the surface normal. There is agreement between the experimentally measured and the theoretically predicted ripple periodicity for 50 pulses at 0° incidence. By contrast, for 100 pulses at 0° incidence, and 50 and 100 pulses at 45° incidence, the experimentally measured ripples have a larger period than the one predicted by the model while the trends in period with increased incident angle, and increased fluence are in agreement between the experimental and the theoretical results.

We report on a novel single-step method to develop steel surfaces with permanent highly hydrophilic and anti-corrosive properties, without employing any chemical coating. It is based on the femtosecond (fs) laser processing in a saturated background gas atmosphere. It is particularly shown that the fs laser microstructuring of steel in the presence of ammonia gas gives rise to pseudoperiodic arrays of microcones exhibiting highly hydrophilic properties, which are stable over time. This is in contrast to the conventional fs laser processing of steel in air, which always provides surfaces with progressively increasing hydrophobicity following irradiation. More importantly, the surfaces subjected to fs laser treatment in ammonia exhibit remarkable anti-corrosion properties, contrary to those processed in air, as well as untreated ones. The combination of two functionalities, namely hydrophilicity and corrosion resistance, together with the facile processing performed directly onto the steel surface, without the need to deposit any coating, opens the way for the laser-based production of high-performance steel components for a variety of applications, including mechanical parts, fluidic components and consumer products.

Femtosecond (FS) laser-induced surface structuring is a robust, maskless, non-contact, and single-step process for producing micro- and nanoscale structures on a material’s surface, which remarkably alters the optical, chemical, wetting, and tribological properties of that material. Wettability control, in particular, is of high significance in various applications, including self-cleaning, anti-fouling, anti-icing, anti-corrosion, and, recently, oil–water separation. Due to growing energy demands and rapid industrialization, oil spill accidents and organic industrial discharges frequently take place. This poses an imminent threat to the environment and has adverse effects on the economy and the ecosystem. Oil–water separation and oil waste management require mechanically robust, durable, low-cost, and highly efficient oil–water manipulation systems. To address this challenge superhydrophobic–superoleophilic and superhydrophilic–underwater superoleophobic membrane filters have shown promising results. However, the recyclability and durability issues of such filters are limiting factors in their industrial application, as well as in their use in oil spill accidents. In this article, we review and discuss the recent progress in the application of FS laser surface structuring in producing durable and robust oil–water separation membrane filters. The wide variety of surface structures produced by FS laser nano- and micromachining are initially presented here, while the excellent wetting characteristics shown by specific femtosecond-induced structures are demonstrated. Subsequently, the working principles of oil–water separation membranes are elaborated, and the most recent advances in the topic are analyzed and discussed.

Cell responses depend on the stimuli received by the surrounding extracellular environment, which provides the cues required for adhesion, orientation, proliferation, and differentiation at the micro and the nano scales. In this study, discontinuous microcones on silicon (Si) and continuous microgrooves on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates were fabricated via ultrashort pulsed laser irradiation at various fluences, resulting in microstructures with different magnitudes of roughness and varying geometrical characteristics. The topographical models attained were specifically developed to imitate the guidance and alignment of Schwann cells for the oriented axonal regrowth that occurs in nerve regeneration. At the same time, positive replicas of the silicon microstructures were successfully reproduced via soft lithography on the biodegradable polymer poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA). The anisotropic continuous (PET) and discontinuous (PLGA replicas) microstructured polymeric substrates were assessed in terms of their influence on Schwann cell responses. It is shown that the micropatterned substrates enable control over cellular adhesion, proliferation, and orientation, and are thus useful to engineer cell alignment in vitro. This property is potentially useful in the fields of neural tissue engineering and for dynamic microenvironment systems that simulate in vivo conditions.
