To compare in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) rates and patient outcomes during the first COVID-19 wave in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2020 with the same period in previous years. A retrospective, multicentre cohort study of 154 UK hospitals that participate in the National Cardiac Arrest Audit and have intensive care units participating in the Case Mix Programme national audit of intensive care. Hospital burden of COVID-19 was defined by the number of patients with confirmed SARS-CoV2 infection admitted to critical care per 10,000 hospital admissions. 16,474 patients with IHCA where a resuscitation team attended were included. Patients admitted to hospital during 2020 were younger, more often male, and of non-white ethnicity compared with 2016-2019. A decreasing trend in IHCA rates between 2016 and 2019 was reversed in 2020. Hospitals with higher burden of COVID-19 had the greatest difference in IHCA rates (21.8 per 10,000 admissions in April 2020 vs 14.9 per 10,000 in April 2019). The proportions of patients achieving ROSC ≥ 20 min and surviving to hospital discharge were lower in 2020 compared with 2016-19 (46.2% vs 51.2%; and 21.9% vs 22.9%, respectively). The existence of correlated disorder in molecular frameworks is an obvious mechanism by which unusual cooperative phenomena might be realised. We show that the use of local-symmetry lowering approaches can allow ostensibly high-symmetry framework structures to harbour exotic disordered states often studied in the context of spin lattice models. These states exhibit strongly cooperative behaviour that might be exploited in anomalous mechanical, host/guest, and information storage behaviour. Our contribution focuses in particular on the concepts of (i) combinatorial mechanics, (ii) adaptive flexibility, and (iii) error-correcting data storage in framework materials.

The thermal expansion of NH4TcO4 and NH4ReO4 between 97 and 500 K has been established using variable temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Both oxides display a tetragonal scheelite-type structure over the temperature range. The observed anomalous thermal expansion is associated with disorder in the orientation of the NH4 groups and the presence of anisotropic, equatorial and axial, interactions between the H atoms and the BO4 tetrahedra. The importance of the hydrogen interactions was verified by a study of the isostructural compound NaReO4 over a similar temperature range. The differences in the details of the Negative Thermal Expansion (NTE) behaviour of NH4TcO4 and NH4ReO4 is a consequence of differences in the H BO4 interactions due to changes in the B O bond lengths within the BO4 groups. Both ammonium salts decompose when heated above ∼500 K.

The ultrahigh porosity and varied functionalities of porous metal–organic frameworks make them excellent candidates for applications that range widely from gas storage and separation to catalysis and sensing. An interesting feature of some frameworks is the ability to open their pores to a specific guest, enabling highly selective separation. A prerequisite for this is bistability of the host structure, which enables the framework to breathe, that is, to switch between two stability minima in response to its environment. Here we describe a porous framework DUT-8(Ni)—which consists of nickel paddle wheel clusters and carboxylate linkers—that adopts a configurationally degenerate family of disordered states in the presence of specific guests. This disorder originates from the nonlinear linkers arranging the clusters in closed loops of different local symmetries that in turn propagate as complex tilings. Solvent exchange stimulates the formation of distinct disordered frameworks, as demonstrated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and diffraction techniques. Guest exchange was shown to stimulate repeatable switching transitions between distinct disorder states. Some flexible metal–organic frameworks are known to exhibit an adaptive behaviour as they convert between two stable forms in response to their environment. Now, a metal–organic framework based on nonlinear linkers has been shown to adopt a much more complex family of degenerate disordered configurations, which can be reversibly interconverted through guest exchange.

Control over the spatial distribution of components in metal–organic frameworks has potential to unlock improved performance and new behaviour in separations, sensing and catalysis. We report an unprecedented single-step synthesis of multi-component metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles based on the canonical ZIF-8 (Zn) system and its Cd analogue, which form with a core–shell structure whose internal interface can be systematically tuned. We use scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy and a new composition gradient model to fit high-resolution X-ray diffraction data to show how core–shell composition and interface characteristics are intricately controlled by synthesis temperature and reaction composition. Particle formation is investigated by in situ X-ray diffraction, which reveals that the spatial distribution of components evolves with time and is determined by the interplay of phase stability, crystallisation kinetics and diffusion. This work opens up new possibilities for the control and characterisation of functionality, component distribution and interfaces in MOF-based materials., Core–shell metal–organic framework nanoparticles have been synthesised in which the internal interface and distribution of components is found to be highly tunable using simple variations in reaction conditions.

By tuning the tolerance factor, \(t\), of the Ruddlesden–Popper oxide Ca\(_2\)MnO\(_4\) through isovalent substitutions, we show that the uniaxial coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE) of these systems can be systematically changed through large negative to positive values. Highresolution X-ray diffraction measurements show that the magnitude of uniaxial negative thermal expansion (NTE) increases as \(t\) decreases across the stability window of the NTE phase. Transitions to phases with positive thermal expansion (PTE) are found to occur at both the high-\(t\) and low-\(t\) limits of stability. First-principles calculations demonstrate that reducing \(t\) enhances the contribution to thermal expansion from the lowest frequency phonons, which have the character of octahedral tilts and have negative mode Gruneisen parameter components along the NTE axis. By tuning \(t\) to the lower edge of the NTE phase stability window, we are hence able to maximise the amplitudes of these vibrations and thereby maximise NTE with a CLTE of -8.1 ppm/K at 125 K. We also illustrate, at the other end of the phase diagram, that an enhancement in compliance of these materials associated with the rotational instability provides another mechanism by which NTE could be yet further enhanced in this and related systems.

We used hydroacoustics and video data collected contemporaneously at three standing and two toppled oil and gas platforms located ∼130 km off the coast of Louisiana. Stereo-video and GoPro® cameras were used to profile the water column to estimate the number, length, and species composition of fishes present on the platforms. Hydroacoustics were used to determine the spatial distribution, both in distance and depth, of relative fish biomass, or mean volume backscatter, within 500 m of the center of each site. Mean volume backscatter (MVBS, SV) was highest near the structure, then declined rapidly with distance. We estimated that background-noise level was obtained at ∼100 m from the structures. Fish MVBS was highest in the lower water column (>60 m depth), compared to 0–30 m and 30–60 m depth zones. Fish communities differed among depth layers, seasonally, and between structure types (standing/toppled), though red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) was the dominant species present at both structure types. Coupled video sampling revealed that MVBS changed little seasonally, but different species contributed to community structure seasonally and among layers in the water column. This study is one of several studies to use video data combined with acoustics to describe species contribution to acoustic biomass at standing and toppled platforms. We contend that integrating these non-destructive sampling methods is an important step in understanding the efficacy of artificial structures as ecological valuable habitat.

Background Patients with relapsed CNS malignancies or DIPG face terrible prognoses. We hypothesized that T cells specific for 3 tumor-associated antigens (TAA), WT1, PRAME and survivin, would be safe and elicit anti-tumor immunity. Methods Patients (n=18) received autologous tumor antigen-associated T cells (TAAT) (up to 8x107/m2) for newly diagnosed DIPG (Group A) or recurrent CNS malignancies (Group B) on a Phase I dose-escalation study (NCT03652545) and were monitored for safety and response. Results/Discussion 16/18 patients who received TAAT completed the 45-day safety monitoring phase with no dose-limiting toxicities. Adverse events were minimal despite multiple pretreatments in Group B. Infused cells were predominantly CD3+ T cells (median 96%; range: 87–99%), with CD4+ and CD8+ comprising 16% (range: 5–87%) and 40% (range: 4–67%) respectively. Specificity for 1–3 TAAs was demonstrated in 11/18 TAAT by a-IFN-γ ELISPOT. Dose escalation is complete, and clinical and immunologic response assessments are ongoing. Plasma cytokine and proteomic analyses demonstrated dynamic post-infusion immune cytokine and protein responses. Consistent with an infusion-mediated immune response all patients in Grp A showed increased T cell effector, inflammatory and immune-stimulatory cytokines IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-2, IL-5, IL-7, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12p70, IL-17A and GM-CSF at Weeks 1 and 2 post-infusion (n = 6). The structure of TcO2 between 25 and 1000 °C has been determined in-situ using powder diffraction methods and is found to remain monoclinic in space group P21/c. The thermal expansion in TcO2 is highly anisotropic with negative thermal ex-pansion of the b-axis observed above 700 °C. We report the synthesis and structural characterisation of three mixed-metal formate perovskite families [C(NH$_2$)$_3$]M$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$(HCOO)$_3$ (M = Mn, Zn, Mg). Using a combination of infrared spectroscopy, non-negative matrix factorization, and reverse Monte Carlo refinement, we show that the Mn- and Zn-containing compounds support compositional nanodomains resembling the polar nanoregions of conventional relaxor ferroelectrics. We report the complete genome sequences of the eight human astrovirus Oxford prototype strains. These sequences share 94.9% to 99.9% nucleotide identity with open reading frame 2 (ORF2) genes of astrovirus genomes previously deposited in GenBank and include the first complete genome of human astrovirus type 7.

Infused cells were predominantly CD3+ T cells (median 96%; range: 87–99%), with CD4+ and CD8+ comprising 16% (range: 5–87%) and 40% (range: 4–67%) of the CD3+ cells, respectively. TAAT with specificity for 1–3 TAAs, at varying frequencies, was demonstrated in 8/9 TAAT by anti-IFN-γ ELISPOT. Plasma cytokine profiles demonstrated infusion-related immune cytokine responses. In summary, TAAT are safe and may elicit anti-tumor responses in vivo. To confirm TAAT-driven effects, we are evaluating plasma proteomic profiles for immune-response signatures and assessing unique T cell receptor rearrangements of infused TAAT. Response assessment and dose escalation are ongoing.

A combination of S-XRD and NPD demonstrate the structure of Ba 2 Y 0.879 UO 6+x to be monoclinic in space group I 2/ m . That the U is hexavalent is evident from the U L 2 -edge XANES measurements. This appears to be a rare example of a double perovskite containing vacancies at the octahedral B -sites and interstitial oxygen defects, which combine to stabilise hexavalent U and appears to be a consequence of the preparation of the sample in air. The Y vacancies, coupled with anion disorder, results in a distortion of the B O 6 octahedra.

The current study investigated the influence of a play-based curriculum on the development of pretend play skills and oral language in children attending their first year of formal schooling. In this quasi-experimental design, two groups of children were followed longitudinally across the first 6 months of their first year at school. The children in the experimental group were attending a school with a play-based curriculum; the children in the control group were attending schools following a traditional curriculum. A total of 54 children (Time 1 Mage = 5;6, range: 4;10–6;2 years) completed standardised measures of pretend play and narrative language skills upon school entry and again 6 months later. The results showed that the children in the play-based group significantly improved on all measures, whereas the children in the traditional group did not. A subset of the sample of children ( N = 28, Time 1 Mage = 5;7, range: 5;2 – 6;1) also completed additional measures of vocabulary and grammar knowledge, and a test of non-verbal IQ. The results suggested that, in addition to improving play skills and narrative language ability, the play-based curriculum also had a positive influence on the acquisition of grammar.

The structure and magnetic properties of the mixed technetium-ruthenium perovskites SrTcxRu1-xO3 (x ​= ​0.25 and 0.5) have been investigated using variable temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and DFT calculations. Both oxides are isostructural with SrRuO3 and SrTcO3, and there is no evidence of long-range cation order. Magnetostriction is observed along the c-axis for both oxides. The inverse susceptibility and DFT calculations suggest a cation-disordered ferrimagnetic ground state for SrTc0.5Ru0.5O3.

We study the structural and thermomechanical effectsof cation substitution in the compositional family ofmetal–organic frameworks Zn1􀀀xCdx(mIm)2 (HmIm = 2-methylimidazole). We find complete miscibility for allcompositions x, with evidence of inhomogeneous distributions of Cd and Zn that in turn affect framework aperture characteristics. Using variable-temperature X-ray powder diffraction measurements, we show that Cd substitution drives a threefold reduction in the magnitude of thermal expansion behaviour. We interpret this effect in terms of an increased density of negative thermal expansion modes in the more flexible Cd-rich frameworks.

We report the synthesis and structural characterisation of the molecular framework copper(I) hexacyanocobaltate(III), Cu3[Co(CN)6], which we find to be isostructural to H3[Co(CN)6] and the colossal negative thermal expansion material Ag3[Co(CN)6]. Using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction measurements, we find strong positive and negative thermal expansion behaviour respectively perpendicular and parallel to the trigonal crystal axis: α a = 25.4 ( 5 ) M K − 1 and α c = − 43.5 ( 8 ) M K − 1 . These opposing effects collectively result in a volume expansivity α V = 7.4 ( 11 ) M K − 1 that is remarkably small for an anisotropic molecular framework. This thermal response is discussed in the context of the behaviour of the analogous H- and Ag-containing systems. We make use of density-functional theory with many-body dispersion interactions (DFT + MBD) to demonstrate that Cu+…Cu+ metallophilic (‘cuprophilic’) interactions are significantly weaker in Cu3[Co(CN)6] than Ag+…Ag+ interactions in Ag3[Co(CN)6], but that this lowering of energy scale counterintuitively translates to a more moderate—rather than enhanced—degree of structural flexibility. The same conclusion is drawn from consideration of a simple GULP model, which we also present here. Our results demonstrate that strong interactions can actually be exploited in the design of ultra-responsive materials if those interactions are set up to act in tension.

The crystal structures of the series of ordered double perovskites Ba(2-x)Sr(x)YIrO6 (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) were refined using a combination of high-resolution synchrotron X-ray and high-intensity neutron diffraction data. The materials displayed a sequence of structures Fm3m(a(0)a(0)a(0)) (x = 0.6)--> I4/m(a(0)a(0)c(-)) (x = 1.0)--> I2/m(a(-)a(-)c(0)) (x = 1.4)--> P2(1)/n(a(-)a(-)c(+)) associated with increased tilting of the corner-sharing octahedra induced by increasing amount of the smaller Sr cation present. A similar sequence of transitions was induced by heating selected samples. Magnetic susceptibility measurements between 2 and 300 K showed no evidence for long-range magnetic ordering, an observation that was supported by neutron diffraction measurements, and rather strong spin-orbit coupling results in a Jeff = 0 ground state.

The high temperature structural behaviour of the uranium perovskites Ba2CaUO6 and BaSrCaUO6 has been investigated using a combination of synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction. Ba2CaUO6 undergoes a complex sequence of structures associated with the progressive loss of cooperative octahedral tilting: P21/n → I2/m → I2/m → I4/m → Fm3[combining macron]m. The observation of the intermediate tetragonal structure, I4/m, in this, contrasts with the previously reported rhombohedral R3[combining macron] intermediate formed by the Ba2SrUO6 oxide. The importance of π-bonding in determining the structural sequence is discussed.

The structure of TcO

Atomic scale modelling suggests that excess oxygen can be accommodated in the group II perovskite zirconates by the formation of peroxide ion defects. This is unprecedented given the lack of charge compensating defects required for standard excess oxygen accommodation. The solution energy of O2 was predicted to be close to zero for BaZrO3, accommodating the peroxide ion defect more easily than in SrZrO3 or CaZrO3. This was experimentally examined by exposing SrZrO3 and BaZrO3 to hydrogen peroxide solution and then carrying out Raman spectroscopy measurements to look for a peak indicative of peroxide ions. A peak was observed at ∼1000 cm−1 in both compositions, suggesting the theoretically predicted peroxide ion is present.

The structure of one of the oxides proposed to be present in the grey phase of irradiated mixed oxide fuel, the double perovskite Ba 2 SrUO 6 has been investigated from room temperature to 1300 K using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction methods. The divalent strontium and hexavalent uranium are found to be fully ordered in the double-perovskite arrangement of alternating octahedra sharing corner oxygen atoms. At room temperature Ba 2 SrUO 6 adopts a monoclinic structure in space group P 2 1 / n . Heating to above 900 K induces a first order transition to a rhombohedral structure, and further heating to above 1200 K results in a continuous transition to a cubic structure. The sequence of structures is associated with the progressive loss of cooperative tilting of the corner sharing SrO 6 and UO 6 octahedra.

We study the compositional dependence of molecular orientation (multipolar) and orbital (quadrupolar) order in the family of perovskite-like metal–organic frameworks [C(NH2)3]CuxCd1–x(HCOO)3. On increasing the fraction x of Jahn-Teller-active Cu2+, we observe first an orbital disorder/order transition and then a multipolar reorientation transition, each occurring at distinct critical compositions xo = 0.45(5) and xm = 0.55(5). We attribute these transitions to a combination of size, charge distribution, and percolation effects. The transitions we observe establish the accessibility in for-mate perovskites of novel structural degrees of freedom beyond the familiar dipolar terms responsible for (an-ti)ferroelectric order. We discuss the symmetry implica-tions of cooperative quadrupolar and multipolar states for the design of relaxor-like hybrid perovskites.

The levels of physical activity and knowledge about postures and practices in carpentry students have not been extensively investigated. This study will inform occupational health practitioners about carpentry students’ physical activity levels and workplace practices, so that back care and injury prevention education can be included in the curriculum. Data were collected from 51 participants using a questionnaire that asked about levels of physical activity and knowledge and practice for injury prevention. On average 6.4 hours of physical activity was performed weekly outside of work and/or study hours by 86% of participants. Most participants identified components of a safe lifting technique (‘bend knees’ 76%; ‘back straight’ 45%). They reported that heavy loads were frequently lifted (51% often/always lifted weights of 20–30kg independently and 69% rarely using the assistance of a co-worker or lifting device). Although participants had a basic knowledge of common lifting strategies for back care and injury prevention, weights lifted independently were frequently over the deemed safe lifting level. The findings indicate that carpentry students have a basic knowledge of injury prevention and lifting techniques but do not necessarily implement their knowledge into practice.

We study mechanical flexibility and its link to optical properties in the dense metal–organic framework silver(I) dicyanamide, Ag[N(CN)2]. We show that the system exhibits polymorph-independent anomalous thermal expansion behaviour and find a linear variation in the relative intensity of emission bands with temperature, indicative of thermochromism in the Ag-centered luminescence.

The ordered double perovskites Ba2-xSrxYIrO6 (x = 0—2) are prepared by calcination of stoichiometric mixtures of BaCO3, SrCO3, Y2O3, and Ir in air (alumina crucible, staged heating at 650—850 °C, 12 h per stage) followed by staged sintering in air at 1050—1350 °C (72 h per stage).

Two Ce3+ containing double perovskites Ba2CeMO6 (M = Nb and Ta) have been prepared through the use of mildly reducing conditions, and the Ce valence state has been shown to be +3 through Ce L-edge X-ray absorption measurements. Both oxides adopt a monoclinic structure in I2/m at room temperature and undergo two phase transitions upon heating, a discontinuous I2/m → R3 and a continuous R3 → Fm3m transition. Analysis of the first order I2/m → R3 transitions is impeded by the complex peak shapes and diffuse scattering evident in the synchrotron powder diffraction data because of domain wall effects.

Aim and Method A comparison study of four six-year-old children attending a school with a play-based curriculum and a school with a traditionally structured classroom from low socioeconomic areas was conducted in Victoria, Australia. Children's play, language and social skills were measured in February and again in August. At baseline assessment there was a combined sample of 31 children (mean age 5.5 years, SD 0.35 years; 13 females and 18 males). At follow-up there was a combined sample of 26 children (mean age 5.9 years, SD 0.35 years; 10 females, 16 males). Results There was no significant difference between the school groups in play, language, social skills, age and sex at baseline assessment. Compared to norms on a standardised assessment, all the children were beginning school with delayed play ability. At follow-up assessment, children at the play-based curriculum school had made significant gains in all areas assessed ( p values ranged from 0.000 to 0.05). Children at the school with the traditional structured classroom had made significant positive gains in use of symbols in play ( p < 0.05) and semantic language ( p < 0.05). At follow-up, there were significant differences between schools in elaborate play ( p < 0.000), semantic language ( p < 0.000), narrative language ( p < 0.01) and social connection ( p < 0.01), with children in the play-based curriculum school having significantly higher scores in play, narrative language and language and lower scores in social disconnection. Implications Children from low SES areas begin school at risk of failure as skills in play, language and social skills are delayed. The school experience increases children's skills, with children in the play-based curriculum showing significant improvements in all areas assessed. It is argued that a play-based curriculum meets children's developmental and learning needs more effectively. More research is needed to replicate these results.

The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) released new fluid guidelines following data suggesting 20% of patients receiving fluids suffer adversely (2013). This quality improvement group assessed fluid prescribing in a tertiary teaching centre and introduced a new fluid- prescribing chart to align practice with NICE recommendations. Notes and corresponding fluid prescription charts were reviewed for evidence of (1) indication, (2) co-morbidities, and (3) further management as surrogate markers of safe prescribing in accordance with NICE. Overall, the data showed practice fell short and prompted a redesign of the Trust fluid prescription chart. Three different variations of the chart were issued consecutively using a PDSA method (plan, do, study, act) over a 6-month period. They all included indication, co-morbidities and further management plans as constant design features. Suggestions from interested parties were incorporated and an educational programme was implemented to promote awareness. Prior to our intervention, an indication for fluids was documented in 26% of notes, it took an average of 4.6 minutes to find co-morbidities, and further management plans were rarely documented. Following the new prescription chart, an indication was recorded in 72% of cases, co-morbidities noted on 63% of charts with 93.1% accuracy, and further management documented in 100% of cases. The new fluid prescription chart encourages prescribers to incorporate NICE recommendations when prescribing fluids. The new fluid prescription design has since been rolled out Trust wide.

TcL3-edge XANES spectra have been collected on powder samples of SrTcO3(octahedral Tc4+) and NH4TcO4(tetrahedral Tc7+) immobilized in an epoxy resin. Features in the TcL3-edge XANES spectra are compared with the pre-edge feature of the TcK-edge as well as other 4dtransition metalL3-edges. Evidence of crystal field splitting is obvious in the TcL3-edge, which is sensitive to the coordination number and oxidation state of the Tc cation. The TcL3absorption edge energy difference between SrTcO3(Tc4+) and NH4TcO4(Tc7+) shows that the energy shift at the TcL3-edge is an effective tool for studying changes in the oxidation states of technetium compounds. The TcL3-edge spectra are compared with those obtained from Mo and Ru oxide standards with various oxidation states and coordination environments. Most importantly, fitting the TcL3-edge to component peaks can provide direct evidence of crystal field splitting that cannot be obtained from the TcK-edge.
