Emilia sonchifolia is a herb with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and wound healing properties. The complete chloroplast genome (cp genome) of the genus Emilia was sequenced for the first time. The cp genome of E. sonchifolia is 151,474 bp in length. It contained a large single-copy (LSC) region (84,004 bp), and small single-copy (SSC) region (17,980 bp), and two inverted repeats (IRs, 24,745 bp). Phylogenetic analysis of 24 species was conducted. E. sonchifolia was found to be closely related to Pericallis hybrida and Dendrosenecio spp. The sequenced cp genome would be useful to understand the phylogeny and genomic studies of the genus Emilia.

Emilia is a widely distributed, mainly African, palaeotropical genus in the tribe Senecioneae (Asteraceae). It comprises 117 species, most of which are annual herbs. Bayesian and parsimony phylogenetic analyses were performed on 51 Emilia species along with closely related genera in the Senecioneae using nuclear ITS and plastid trnL‐trnF sequence data to address questions around the generic circumscription of Emilia, including the status of the similar genera Emiliella and Bafutia, assess Jeffrey's sectional classification of Emilia, and evaluate the distinctness of the morphologically similar species in the large‐headed Emilia coccinea complex. Both nuclear and plastid phylogenies reveal Emilia to be paraphyletic and polyphyletic, with Bafutia and Emiliella nested within Emilia, and Jeffrey's sectional classification is not supported. The phylogenies provide additional evidence that Emilia coccinea and E. caespitosa should be synonymised, as shown by published phenetic cluster and multivariate analyses. The necessary taxonomic changes are made in this manuscript. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Children's literature has a great influence in the world and in the lives of children by being a socialization feature, enabling children to interact with the environment in which they live, because literature is not neutral and it is always exercise on people some form of ideology. Monteiro Lobato (1882-1936), a pioneer of children's literature in Brazil, in his works uses methodologies to recognize the need to work with literature, so that we can, through literature, exercise the notion of choice by the child. Thus, Lobato works in playful way in Memórias de Emília, in which he uses the doll to expose a feature of language that Bakhtin calls as Polyphony. Using this phenomenon, it is possible to identify some of the ideological perspectives presents in the literature of Lobato who builds his narrative under ideological consciousness implied in the characters. Analyzing Memórias de Emília, the polyphonic process, that is, the multiple voices in the interior of the narrative, the various contents of our social context, that are linked in a discursive way through social reality, with discourses that diverge among themselves and weave dialogues with social interaction in the narrative, are realized and identified. After all, Memórias de Emília is a polyphonic novel because it is a story that presents several social voices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Achenes cylindrical to obscurely quadrangular, 2–2.2 mm long, densely hispid; ribs prominent, greyish brown to straw-coloured; pappus 3–4 mm long, erect or slightly radiating, barbellate, creamy silky white, persistent. Phenology:— Plants appear with the onset of rainy season, start blooming from June and complete their life cycle by September. Etymology: — The specific epithet is derived from the peculiar lateritic habitat of the new species, which is found along the western coast of Peninsular India. Taxonomic notes:— The new species is most similar to E. sonchifolia in some vegetative and floral characters and shares the same habitat with the latter. However, they differ in several characters (Table 1). Distribution and ecology:— Emilia lateritica is discovered only on lateritic plateaus of Kasaragod District of Kerala, South India. The species is found growing on shallow soils on rocks which are generally Nitrogen-deficient. The plants are growing in clusters along with grasses and other forbs including Utricularia malabarica Janarthanam & Henry (1989: 84), Polygala chinensis Linnaeus (1753: 704), Isachne veldkampii Bhat & Nagendran (1983: 258) and Eriocaulon madayiparense Swapna et al. (2012: 19). The allied species, E. sonchifolia is also found on these plateaus. It is quite larger and more robust than the new species and prefers to grow on deeper nutrient-rich soil. Other species of Emilia mostly prefer to grow on low to medium-altitude hills of Peninsular India. Additional specimen examined (paratype):— INDIA. Kerala: Kasaragod District, Posadi, 260 m, 12°64’1311” N, 75°04’2526” E, 26 July 2020, P . Biju & Josekutty 9432 (KFRI!). Conservation Status:— Lateritic plateaus on the Kerala and Konkan coasts of Peninsular India are often considered as neoendemic regions and harbour a large number of endemic species. The new species is found growing only in a few localities along the plateaus of Kasaragod District. The area is subject to laterite mining and rapid urbanization. The distribution of the species on other plateaus is not known and hence may be assessed as Data Deficient (DD) of IUCN (2019)., Published as part of Biju, Punnakot, Josekutty, Elayanithottathil Joseph, Prasad, Karuvankoodelu Subrahmanya, Kumar, Venugopalan Nair Saradamma Anil & Augustine, Jomy, 2022, Emilia lateritica (Asteraceae), a new species from lateritic plateaus of Northern Kerala, India, pp. 201-206 in Phytotaxa 556 (2) on pages 202-205, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.556.2.10, http://zenodo.org/record/6965813, {"references":["Candolle, A. Se realizó un estudio con el fin de determinar la estructura demográfica de Emilia sonchifolia (L.) DC en una finca cafetera del Municipio de Armenia, Quindío, Colombia, donde se recolectaron datos durante 4 semanas, en tres sitios: exterior, borde e interior del cultivo. ABSTRACT A research study was conducted to determine the demographic structure of Emilia sonchifolia L. in a coffee plantation in Armenia, Quindío, Colombia. Data were collected over a period of four weeks on three sites: inside, at the border and outside a coffee farm. A logistic population model was built to describe the population behavior of E. sonchifolia over time. Statiscally significant differences were found between: number of individuals per life stage in time, mortality rate, transition time from seedling to juvenile and from juvenile to adult; and number of leaves and branches. There was no evidence for statistically significant differences in population density or in number of inflorescences and fruits between study sites. In general, the observed behavior may be attributed to the r strategy used by this species. Finally, our results suggest the survival of the species is conditioned by the presence of all life stages at the beginning of each simulation based on the logistic model; so, a potential strategy for its controlling would require the removal during the juvenile stage. The considerations offer alternatives regarding weed population management.

- Abstract
Multi-year investigations on Cerambycidae and Vesperidae in central Emilia (Italy) are described. Short notes on the host plants and the phenology of the treated species are provided as well as a comparison of our findings with the literature produced by other entomologists since the 19th century. Some species, signaled in the recent checklist of Italian Cerambycidae, are not present here because they were not found in our research, although they could be identified in future investigations. The number of species reported in this work is 121, but considering also the quotations reported by Sama & Rapuzzi (2011), the total number amounts to 143 species. This is an updating of our previous work (2009). In this review, we have revised the nomenclature, updated the literature review, and updated the species, since their number is growing all the time thanks to the continuous research that has been carried out in the past few years. One of the most critical issues in a post-earthquake emergency is assessing the usability of buildings in order to recommence daily life in the stricken area while ensuring the safety of people returning to their houses. Generally, this is done by means of surveys based on usability forms filled out by expert technicians. Different countries adopt different forms, all that assess usability in terms of building damage. The Italian approach takes into account, in addition to the building's damage, the vulnerability of the building. In this study, the data collected through the widespread survey performed in the aftermath of the L'Aquila (Italy) 2009 earthquake was analysed, showing that some buildings were judged not usable despite having no or very little damage. The role of other causes, including vulnerability, in the determination of unusability are discussed. Finally, a practical case faced by the authors during the usability survey in Emilia (Italy) after the 2012 seismic sequence highlights the role of vulnerability in the usability outcome. EARTHQUAKES , *EARTHQUAKE zones , *INDUSTRIALIZATION , *COMPUTER software , *EARTHQUAKE resistant design - Abstract
North-eastern Italy is one of the most seismically active areas of Italy, being affected in the past by eight destructive earthquakes. This area is densely populated and heavily industrialized, hence its seismic monitoring is crucial for Civil Defense purposes. This task is managed by the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS), through its Centro Ricerche Sismologiche (CRS), that performs the automatic real-time locations through the Antelope® BRTT software package. An accurate choice of the Antelope® setting parameters is necessary to ensure the best performance of the real-time system, that means the most accurate location for the earthquakes with magnitude ML=2.5 (the alarm threshold), avoiding any false event. This goal was pursued by testing different parameters on a data set built with 295 earthquakes representative of the local seismicity. The tuned parameters were then validated on the earthquakes which occurred in the monitored area in 2011: all events with MML=2.5 were correctly detected and located with a median epicentral distance difference of 2 km with respect to the OGS catalogue. The OGS real-time system was tuned with these parameters that have been operating successfully since 2012. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper argues that the character of Emilia might be both read and cast as a black woman, and considers the interpretive and performative possibilities in such a move. First it considers the present-day uses of such a reading and discusses the ways that modern theatre practitioners have experimented with race in castingOthello. Then it suggests a sort of thought experiment: imagining a Jacobean performance tailored to the interests of the new royal family—specifically Anne's interest in black entertainers—a performance that in Emilia gives us possibly the first depictions of an African woman on the English stage and an exploration of the racial and gender dynamics in not one, buttwointerracial marriages. LIQUEFACTION (Physics) , *EARTHQUAKES , *SUBSOILS , *GEOTECHNICAL engineering , *DEFORMATIONS (Mechanics) - Abstract
On the 20th and 29th of May 2012, two earthquakes occurred in Emilia-Romagna region (Northern Italy) triggering extensive liquefaction of the subsoil units. The consequences of liquefaction have been observed and reported by several agencies in a widespread area. The most impressive liquefaction manifestations were documented in a zone 3–4 km-long and 1 km-wide, where the villages of Sant'Agostino, San Carlo and Mirabello are located. The existing post-earthquake reports and the availability of geotechnical data provided by in-situ tests consist the basic ingredients for a computation of the liquefaction potential parameters within this zone. In particular, the Liquefaction Potential Index ( LPI ) and Liquefaction Severity Number ( LSN ) indexes were evaluated and then correlated by considering liquefaction phenomena either observed on site or not. Thus, the existing classifications of the LPI and LSN were evaluated and compared with the observed liquefaction-induced deformations. The latter was applied and validated for the first time within a liquefiable area using post-earthquake data, after the development by Tonkin and Taylor (2013). The outcome of this study shows that a threshold value of LPI around 13 or 14 is better to be taken into account instead of 5 for discriminating sites where liquefaction surface evidences should be expected from the ‘non-liquefied’ ones. Moreover, from the correlation of the LSN values with the cases of liquefaction-induced ground disruption it is concluded that the proposed threshold value of 10 fits statistically well with our dataset. In addition, a preliminary correlation of LPI and LSN indicates a trend that could be useful in future studies for delineating sites likely to liquefaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

26. Workplace learning as a linchpin of Europe's lifelong learning policyAn examination of national policies with particular reference to people with long-term mental illness.

- Abstract
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which workplace learning forms a building block in national lifelong learning policies by obtaining evidence, first-hand, from mental health practitioners about their perceptions of their individual country's national lifelong learning policy and, in particular, its application to adults with long-term mental illness. Design/methodology/approach – Text analysis: review of relevant literature and European Union policy documents and survey questionnaire. Findings – It is evident that the use of workplace learning as a linchpin in national strategies for lifelong learning in Denmark and France is clear and empirically supported. Research limitations/implications – Comparative evidence of evaluations of impact and effectiveness of workplace lifelong learning provision in the two countries examined is patchy at best raising further questions about the "value" of investments in both workplace learning and lifelong learning in these countries. Practical implications – There is a risk that by focusing on jobs and workplace learning, the specific needs and desires of people with mental illness who, in the main, might want to engage in lifelong learning for reasons other than jobs and workplace learning, may end up being disadvantaged as their (non-economic) needs go unmet. Originality/value – Until now there has been little or no attempt to examine Europe's conception of lifelong learning policy and its application to a multiple disadvantaged group such as mental health service users. This is a major attempt to remedy current dearth of research in the area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
I can trace my ancestry back to a protoplasmal primordial atomic globule. Consequently, my family pride is something inconceivable The early modern Neapolitan aristocracy shared many characteristics with its Northern Italian and European counterparts. It acknowledged the superior political authority of a government that in turn recognized the aristocracy's predominant social role. It was the wealthiest group in society and the source of its wealth lay primarily in its landed patrimony, as was becoming increasingly true of most Northern Italian patriciates. Though it did not always reside in the capital, to a large extent the Neopolitan aristocracy shared in the urban culture and lifestyle common among Venetian or Florentine patricians. Finally, it occupied a preeminent share of the military and bureaucratic offices the early modern states needed to man. But the aristocracy of the kingdom of Naples was considerably different from the Venetian or Florentine patriciates, as well as from other Italian and Western European nobilities, in its feudal character. Although there were feudal lands, which endowed their owners with feudal rights and exemptions, in all the Italian states, in none of them were feudal institutions and powers so widespread, pervasive, and influential as in the three kingdoms among them — Naples, Sicily, and Sardinia. - Abstract
The unification of Italy makes increasingly possible, though not easy, those [statistical] studies to which the past opposed so many obstacles. The government itself participates in these researches and is anxious to communicate the results to the public. Reciprocally, the economic revolution, which necessarily follows every political revolution, is awakening all national forces and energies, and thus opening a new space to the spirit of enterprise which has been asleep for too long. These words from the Annuario di economia sociale e di statistica pel Regno d'ltalia, by two Piedmontese commentators, P. Duprat and A. Gicca, are indicative of the hopes shared by liberal sectors of public opinion in the early 1860s, after the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy. They express a still optimistic view of the future that awaited the new nation, and of its capability to mobilize “national forces and energies”, as well as of the possibilities offered by the new state institutions to the development of that most stately and national of all forms of knowledge, statistics. In the newly proclaimed Kingdom of Italy, the process of construction of a liberal order was to receive many benefits from the “social institution” of statistics – to use an expression recurrent in the vocabulary of the official and unofficial publications in those years. It is known that the newly established Direzione di Statistica (Directorate of Statistics) put a special effort into the immediate production of the basic statistics of the nation, namely the population census. 32. The acquisition of the language of politics.

Viroli, Maurizio
- Abstract
Even though the words “politics” and “political” were absent from the documents of popes, kings and feudal lords, the Middle Ages maintained some relics of the classical language of politics. Philosophers, erudites and theologians of the twelfth century knew of a science of politics and discussed political virtues. References to political science appear in the context of comprehensive classifications of sciences or encyclopedias, while political virtues were mentioned within broader analyses of the various types of moral virtues and their relative merits. Inserted in a new intellectual context, the words and idioms of the classical language of politics were almost unrecognizable, like pieces of a Greek or Roman temple disseminated within the stones of a gothic palace. It is only in the thirteenth century that the scattered ruins of the Athenian and Roman wisdom were elaborated to form a coherent and shared language of politics as art of the city and a recognizable image of the political man. The historical context of this renaissance was e experience of the free city-republics that flourished in the Regnum Italicum in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Although the language of politics that became conventional by the end of the thirteenth century was not the exclusive ideology of republican or popular governments, the main political challenge that stimulated its rebirth was the institution and the preservation of free cities against the threats of tyranny. Three major intellectual traditions cooperated in the work of reconstructing the language of politics: the tradition of the political virtues, Aristotelianism and Roman law. In the subsequent chapters, I shall try to interpret the contribution of each of them and illuminate their complex interplays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The flowering sequence duration, fruit production and percentage of fruit-set per capitulum of the three Emilia Cass species in Nigeria were investigated. There were similarities, differences and overlaps in the duration of the different stages of the flowering phase among the three species. Flowering of E. praetermissa, the allotetraploid hybrid of E. coccinea and E. sonchifolia, starts faster than of its parental species. Fruit production performance was found to be associated with a number of vegetative and reproductive characteristics of Emilia plants. Fruit production and percentage of fruit-set per capitulum were highest in E. praetermissa. E. coccinea achenes had a shorter post-pollination period on the plant. Fruit set and production of Emilia species are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research presents, from the theoretical concepts of the Discourse Analysis of French Line (AD), an interpretative look on the authorship in the works of the Sítio do Picapau Amarelo of Monteiro Lobato. We start from conceptions of authorship discussed by Bakhtin (1997), by Foucault (2001), Chartier (2012) and Eco (1986), in order to understand how the author-role in the figure of Monteiro Lobato, as author of his work making this a revolution in children's and youth literature in Brazil. We also seek to understand how, in the context of her narratives, the character Tia Nastácia assumes the role-author and creates her two texts, which also revolutionize the direction of the stories: Emília and Visconde de Sabugosa. In this perspective, we consider both the relation of the author and the one who constructs, controls, inaugurates and becomes responsible for the discourse (FOUCAULT, 2001), as we consider the relation author as a creative and productive principle of the hero. Based on the considerations on the concepts of text, utterance, discourse and meaning, discussed by Bakhtin (2003, 2014), Foucault (1996, 2001), Gregolin (1995) and Orlandi (2007), we intend to show, Lobato and his characters, as the role-author can be seen in the relationship between Tia Nastácia, Emília and Visconde de Sabugosa, and how this relationship reconfigures the image of the character Tia Nastácia in the work of Lobato. In the end, we also present a proposal of textual production with marks of authorship for the first years of Elementary School II, from the book Memórias da Emília (1936). - Abstract
Analysis of several populations in a large part of the distribution area of the genus Emilia in Brazil has revealed only two species: the diploid E. sonchifolia and the tetraploid E. fosbergii. The more widely reported E. coccinea was not found. They show a karyotype constancy in morphology and chromosome number (2n = 10 and 2n = 20, respectively), C-banding pattern and number of secondary constrictions. Some indications were found that E. fosbergii may be an allopolyploid and that its ancestors had different genome sizes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anthers are tetrasporangiate in Emilia sonchifolia and Notonia grandiflora and bisporangiate in Gynura nitida. The male archesporium consists of a single row of 6-8 hypodermal cells. Development of anther walls is according to the Dicotyledonous type. The tapetum corresponds to the periplasmodial type. Both tetrahedral and isobilateral pollen tetrads are produced. The pollen grains at the time of anther dehiscence are three-celled in G. nitida and E. sonchifolia; N. grandiflora is male sterile. All the three species have Polygonum type embryo sacs with variable antipodal cells. In G. nitida and E. sonchifolia fertilization is porogamous, endosperm development is of the cellular type, and embryo development closely follows that of Senecio vulgaris ( Souèges 1920a, b).
