Abstract

The Dark Energy Camera is a new imager with a 2.2-degree diameter field of view mounted at the prime focus of the Victor M. Blanco 4-meter telescope on Cerro Tololo near La Serena, Chile. The camera was designed and constructed by the Dark Energy Survey Collaboration, and meets or exceeds the stringent requirements designed for the wide-field and supernova surveys for which the collaboration uses it. The camera consists of a five element optical corrector, seven filters, a shutter with a 60 cm aperture, and a CCD focal plane of 250 micron thick fully-depleted CCDs cooled inside a vacuum Dewar. The 570 Mpixel focal plane comprises 62 2kx4k CCDs for imaging and 12 2kx2k CCDs for guiding and focus. The CCDs have 15 microns x15 microns pixels with a plate scale of 0.263 arc sec per pixel. A hexapod system provides state-of-the-art focus and alignment capability. The camera is read out in 20 seconds with 6-9 electrons readout noise. Abstract

Results are reported from a beam test of prototype silicon microstrip detectors and front-end electronics developed for use in the LHC detector ATLAS. The detector assemblies ("modules") were 12 cm long and were read out with binary electronics. Both irradiated and unirradiated modules were measured in a 1.56 T magnetic field for efficiency, noise occupancy, and position resolution as a function of bias voltage, binary hit threshold, and detector rotation angle with respect to the beam direction. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

The performance of the silicon strip detector prototypes developed for use in ATLAS at the LHC is reported. Baseline detector assemblies ("modules") of 12 cm length were read out with binary electronics at 40 MHz clock speed. For both irradiated and unirradiated modules, the tracking efficiency, noise occupancy, and position resolution were measured as a function of bias voltage, binary hit threshold, and detector rotation angle in a 1.56 T magnetic field. Measurements were also performed at a particle flux comparable to the one expected at the LHC. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

We report on the results from a beam test of a binary silicon strip system proposed for ATLAS. The data were collected during the H8 beam test at CERN in 1995 and at a beam test at KEK in 1996. The binary modules tested had been assembled from silicon micro-strip detectors of different layout and from front-end electronics chips of different architecture. The efficiency, noise occupancy, and position resolution were determined as a function of the threshold setting for various bias voltages and angles of incidence. Interstrip effects were also evaluated using a high resolution telescope. The performance of a prototype detector module irradiated to a fluence of 1.2×1014p/cm2 is also characterized.

Abstract

The binary modules tested had been assembled from silicon microstrip detectors of different layout and from front-end electronics chips of different architecture. The efficiency, noise occupancy and position resolution were determined as a function of the threshold setting for various bias voltages and angles of incidence for both irradiated and non-irradiated detectors. In particular, the high spatial resolution of the beam telescope allowed the evaluation of the performance as a function of the track location in between detector strips.

Abstract

We have irradiated an n-side silicon microstrip detector to an equivalent high energy fluence of 1 x [10.sup.15] p [cm.sup.-2] using 55 MeV protons. We determined the median pulse height to be 0.7 fC at a bias voltage of 180 V, and deduced a depletion region of about 80 [[micro]meter].

Abstract

A large area (60 mm x 60 mm) n-bulk and n-strip readout silicon strip detector prototype was fabricated for the ATLAS SCT detector. Detector modules with a strip length of 12 cm were made by butting two detectors. One of the 12 cm modules was irradiated with protons to a fluence of 1.2 x [10.sup.14] p/[cm.sup.2], and a beam test was carded out for the non-irradiated and the irradiated detector modules. Efficiency and noise occupancy were analyzed using the beam test data. High efficiency was obtained for both detectors in the bias voltages down to about half the full depletion voltage. Abstract

We present new results from a cryogenic detector instrumented to measure both the phonon and ionization signals. The detector is a 60 g Ge disk operated at 30 mK. We have made significant improvements in the electronics noise, threshold, and energy resolution of the device. The baseline FWHM, corresponding to the total system noise, is 1.55 keV in the phonon channel and 1.59 keV in the ionization channel. At 60 keV the FWHM are 1.9 keV and 1.7 keV in the phonon and ionization channels, respectively. We have demonstrated for the first time a discrimination between electron recoils and nuclear recoils at low energy.

Abstract

Prototype sensors for the ATLAS silicon pixel detector have been electrically characterized. The current and voltage characteristics, charge collection efficiencies, and resolutions have been examined. Devices were fabricated on oxygenated and standard detector-grade silicon wafers. Results from prototypes which examine p-stop and standard and moderated p-spray isolation are presented for a variety of geometrical options. Some of the comparisons relate unirradiated sensors with those that have received fluences relevant to LHC operation.

Abstract

We are preparing an experimental search for weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter using cryogenic germanium detectors. These detectors measure both the ionization and phonons produced by particle interactions in the substrate. The ionization measurement uses low drift fields, approximately equals 1 V/cm. The phonon measurement is made using neutron transmutation doped (NTD) germanium thermistors. Simultaneous detection of phonons and ionization allows us to discriminate between electron-recoil and nuclear-recoil events which gives a powerful method for isolating possible WIMP events (nuclear recoils) from background gamma ray events (electron recoils). Recent work on our understanding and optimization of these detectors will be presented.

Abstract

We report on progress in our understanding of the physics of of implanted contacts, amorphous layer structures and Schottky contacts on detectors based on the simultaneous ionization and phonon based at 20 mK. Loss of charge for events near the contacts limits the capabilities of these detectors for detecting dark matter, an effect which is minimized by use of amorphous blocking layers.

Abstract

The Ge and Si detectors developed by the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) II experiment rely on the simultaneous detection of athermal phonons and ionization produced by interactions in the crystal. The athermal phonons provide both the total energy deposited in an interaction and the information about the position of the interaction. We describe extracting this information from the pulse shapes in the four phonon sensors. We present the result of measurements made on a Si detector from the first CDMS II production batch. Abstract

We report on progress in our understanding of the physics of of implanted contacts, amorphous layer structures and Schottky contacts on detectors based on the simultaneous ionization and phonon based at 20 mK. Loss of charge for events near the contacts limits the capabilities of these detectors for detecting dark matter, an effect which is minimized by use of amorphous blocking layers. Abstract

The ZIP detectors deployed in the CDMS II experiment utilize phonon sensors comprising W Transition Edge Sensors (TESs). In order to ensure uniform collection of the athermal phonon signal the TESs are dispersed uniformly on one side of a 1 cm thick, 3 inch diameter, disk. Each quadrant contains 1036 TESs connected in parallel to one series-array SQUID amplifier. The initial superconducting transition temperatures of these TESs tend to be too high for our requirements, and substantial gradients make the operation of the detectors difficult. Hence our implementation of Fe-56 ion implantation, as reported at the previous LTD meeting, to reduce in a controlled manner the transition temperature. However, the successful implementation of this ion-implantation scheme requires accurate knowledge of the initial transition temperature of each TES in a given quadrant.
