HF radars measure ocean surface currents near coastlines with a spatial and temporal resolution that remains unmatched by other approaches. Most HF radars employ direction-finding techniques, which obtain the most accurate ocean surface current data when using measured, rather than idealized, antenna patterns. Simplifying and automating the antenna pattern measurement (APM) process would improve the utility of HF radar data, since idealized patterns are widely used. A method is presented for obtaining antenna pattern measurements for direction-finding HF radars from ships of opportunity. Positions obtained from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) are used to identify signals backscattered from ships in ocean current radar data. These signals and ship position data are then combined to determine the HF radar APM. Data screening methods are developed and shown to produce APMs with low error when compared with APMs obtained with shipboard transponder-based approaches. The analysis indicates that APMs can be reproduced when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the backscattered signal is greater than 11 dB. To investigate the possibility that oil and gas platforms may reduce recruitment of rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) to natural habitat, we simulated drift pathways (termed "trajectories" in our model) from an existing oil platform to nearshore habitat using current measurements from high-frequency (HF) radars. The trajectories originated at Platform Irene, located west of Point Conception, California, during two recruiting seasons for bocaccio (Sebastes paucispinis): May through August, 1999 and 2002. Given that pelagic juvenile bocaccio dwell near the surface, the trajectories estimate transport to habitat. We assumed that appropriate shallow water juvenile habitat exists inshore of the 50-m isobath. Results from 1999 indicated that 10% of the trajectories represent transport to habitat, whereas 76% represent transport across the offshore boundary. For 2002, 24% represent transport to habitat, and 69% represent transport across the offshore boundary. Remaining trajectories (14% and 7% for 1999 and 2002, respectively) exited the coverage area either northward or southward along isobaths. Deployments of actual drifters (with 1-m drogues) from a previous multiyear study provided measurements originating near Platform Irene from May through August. All but a few of the drifters moved offshore, as was also shown with the HF radar-derived trajectories. These results indicate that most juvenile bocaccio settling on the platform would otherwise have been transported offshore and perished in the absence of a platform. The performance of a network of five CODAR (Coastal Ocean Dynamics Application Radar) SeaSonde high-frequency (HF) radars, broadcasting near 13 MHz and using the Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm for direction finding, is described based on comparisons with an array of nine moorings in the Santa Barbara Channel and Santa Maria basin deployed between June 1997 and November 1999. Eight of the moorings carried vector-measuring current meters (VMCMs), the ninth had an upward-looking ADCP. Coverage areas of the HF radars and moorings included diverse flow and sea-state regimes. Measurement depths were ∼1 m for the HF radars, 5 m for the VMCMs, and 3.2 m for the ADCP bin nearest to the surface. Comparison of radial current components from 18 HF radar–mooring pairs yielded rms speed differences of 7–19 cm s-1 and correlation coefficients squared (r2) in the range of 0.39–0.77. Spectral analysis showed significant coherence for frequencies below 0.1 cph (periods longer than 10 h). At higher frequencies no significant coherence was found, and noise levels corresponding to 6 cm s-1 rms were evident in the radar data. Errors in the radar bearing determination were found in 10 out of 18 comparisons, with a typical magnitude of 5°–10°, and a maximum of 19°. The effects of bearing errors on total vector currents were evaluated using a simple flow field and measured bearing errors, showing up to 15% errors in computed flow speeds, and up to ∼9° errors in flow directions. High-frequency (HF) ocean radar has the potential to observe sea ice, but this application has not been thoroughly investigated. In this article, we explore sea ice observation with HF radar (HFR) and develop a corresponding signal processing procedure. We derived sea ice radial velocities from raw HFR data and determined angular positions using the MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm. Sea ice velocities were evaluated by comparison with measurements from moored acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) and a drifting buoy. The root-mean-square (rms) differences between the sea ice velocities obtained by HFR and the ADCPs decreased with increasing radar signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), implying that a high SNR was associated with accurate measurement of sea ice velocity. These results agree with previous validations of HFR ocean current observations. The sea ice pattern mapped by HFR is consistent with the simultaneous C-band microwave radar observations. In particular, the HFR captured the approach of the sea ice edge toward the coast. Sharp attenuation of the HF signal over high concentration sea ice resulted in missing and/or low-SNR data at ranges beyond the front edge of pack ice, in qualitative agreement with model estimates of attenuation. We characterize stratification patterns over diel, seasonal, and annual time scales in inshore and offshore regions of Lake Victoria, East Africa; determine conditions leading to horizontal exchanges; and, using surface energy budgets derived from local meteorological stations and two reanalysis products, address whether stratification depends on advective as opposed to local processes. The largest change in the surface energy budget occurred when winds intensified at the end of the long rains, with the wind's intensification, duration, and spatial extent dependent on El Niño-Southern Oscillation cycles. These winds flush inshore waters and cause cross-basin upwelling similar to that observed in the deep African Great Lakes. Wedderburn numbers indicated mixing and cross-basin within-thermocline transport. The internal wave-induced mixing and enhanced latent heat fluxes of -300 to -400 W m-2 contributed to the loss of seasonal stratification. Advection of cool water was required to balance the heat budget of northern offshore waters in the latter half of the southeast monsoon except in an El Niño year. Northern waters became weakly stratified after the southeast monsoon, with nocturnal winds contributing to heat transport and ventilation of the lower water column. Following the rainy season, downwelling by sustained southerly albeit low winds is a likely cause of the seasonal thermocline. Inshore waters are 0.2 -1.5°C warmer than those offshore, conditions conducive to horizontal convective circulation except during onshore winds. The seasonal cycle of stratification and inshore-offshore and cross-basin exchanges are moderated by differential heating, cooling, and basin-scale thermocline tilting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
