Abstract

In their 2012 report, the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology advocated "replacing standard science laboratory courses with discovery-based research courses"-a challenging proposition that presents practical and pedagogical difficulties. In this paper, we describe our collective experiences working with the Genomics Education Partnership, a nationwide faculty consortium that aims to provide undergraduates with a research experience in genomics through a scheduled course (a classroom-based undergraduate research experience, or CURE). We examine the common barriers encountered in implementing a CURE, program elements of most value to faculty, ways in which a shared core support system can help, and the incentives for and rewards of establishing a CURE on our diverse campuses. While some of the barriers and rewards are specific to a research project utilizing a genomics approach, other lessons learned should be broadly applicable. We find that a central system that supports a shared investigation can mitigate some shortfalls in campus infrastructure (such as time for new curriculum development, availability of IT services) and provides collegial support for change. Our findings should be useful for designing similar supportive programs to facilitate change in the way we teach science for undergraduates.

Abstract

There is widespread agreement that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics programs should provide undergraduates with research experience. Practical issues and limited resources, however, make this a challenge. We have developed a bioinformatics project that provides a course-based research experience for students at a diverse group of schools and offers the opportunity to tailor this experience to local curriculum and institution-specific student needs. We assessed both attitude and knowledge gains, looking for insights into how students respond given this wide range of curricular and institutional variables. While different approaches all appear to result in learning gains, we find that a significant investment of course time is required to enable students to show gains commensurate to a summer research experience. An alumni survey revealed that time spent on a research project is also a significant factor in the value former students assign to the experience one or more years later. We conclude: 1) implementation of a bioinformatics project within the biology curriculum provides a mechanism for successfully engaging large numbers of students in undergraduate research; 2) benefits to students are achievable at a wide variety of academic institutions; and 3) successful implementation of course-based research experiences requires significant investment of instructional time for students to gain full benefit.

39. Educating preschoolers about sun safety

Abstract

Objectives. This feasibility study examined whether a sun safety curriculum designed for and administered to preschoolers affects their cognition (knowledge, comprehension, application) regarding sun safety. Methods. Twelve classes of 4- to 5-year-olds were recruited from local preschools and randomly assigned to an intervention group or a control group. The intervention group received an investigator-developed sun safety curriculum; the control group did not. Children in both groups were tested at the beginning of the study about their cognition related to sun safety. They then received posttests 2 and 7 weeks following the pretest. Results. The curriculum had a significant effect on the knowledge (P = .01) and comprehension (P = .006) components of cognition. The application component of cognition was not significantly changed by the curriculum. Conclusions. A structured curriculum was found to be an efficacious means of enhancing knowledge and comprehension of sun safety in preschool children. At the preoperational developmental stage, however, children may not be able to apply such knowledge and comprehension. (Am J Public Health. 1995; 85:939--943), Preschool children seem to retain information about sun safety, but they cannot apply what they have learned to situations outside of what was taught. Six classes of four- to five-year-olds were randomly assigned to receive lessons in sun safety, and six classes formed a control group. All children were tested before presentation of the sun safety unit and at two and seven weeks afterwards. Children receiving instruction showed more knowledge of sun safety and comprehension of sun safety within the confines of what they had been taught, but they could not extrapolate their knowledge to new situations. The improvement persisted at the second posttest, although to a lesser degree. Results were not unexpected because the ability to apply knowledge to a new situation is not commonly found in this age group. The children were not observed so it is not known whether instruction changed actual behavior, for example, seeking shade.

The alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) repressor is only active in the goblet cells of the intestine in mice. The repressor element is located between -838 and -259 bp upstream from the AFP gene. Deletion of the repressor causes continued expression of AFP in goblet cells and enteroendocrine cells, but not in enterocytes.

Abstract

Studies of developmental outcome of neonatal intensive care unit graduates have generally been limited to the first 2 to 3 years of life, with outcome determined by psychometric tests. This study followed neonatal intensive care unit graduates born 1975 through 1983 (n = 457) into the public school system and compared their educational outcomes with those of newborn nursery graduates (n = 656). Outcomes were evaluated by placement in four academic categories: regular classroom, academic problems, speech/language impairment, and major impairment. Educational outcomes for children of both groups were essentially the same. Their placement in the four academic categories were equally affected by nonmedical variables, primarily income (below/above poverty level), race, and sex. Seventy percent of poverty-level children were in one of the three problem categories compared with 40% of children above poverty level. Neither neonatal intensive care unit treatment nor low birth weight were major predictors of educational outcome. The only clear-cut neonatal intensive care unit effect occurred among children born with sensory or physical impairments. Therefore, in order to reduce poor educational outcomes, follow-up and intervention programs should be targeted primarily to children with diagnosable handicaps and from minority, low-income families. Abstract

Staphylococcus aureusis the bacterium cultured most often from respiratory secretions of people with cystic fibrosis. Both meticillin-susceptible S aureusand meticillin-resistant S aureus(MRSA) can adapt to form slow-growing, antibiotic-resistant isolates known as small-colony variants that are not routinely identified by clinical laboratories. We aimed to determine the prevalence and clinical significance of S aureussmall-colony variants and their subtypes among children with cystic fibrosis.

Abstract

Background. Skin cancer affects more Americans than any other type of cancer. Children are prime targets for prevention education, because sun overexposure in early childhood may affect the development of skin cancer later in life. Preventive behaviors adopted early in life may be less resistant to change than those acquired in adulthood. Thus, there is a need to educate children at an early age about sun overexposure. Methods. This article describes the evolution of skin cancer prevention research at the Arizona Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute--designated comprehensive cancer center. Research focusing on children is highlighted. Results. From its roots in the Arizona Sun Awareness Project, an informal public skin cancer education program, skin cancer prevention research at the Arizona Cancer Center has produced two developmentally appropriate, age-based curricula aimed at teaching children about the benefits and dangers of the sun. The elementary school curriculum, Sunny Days, Healthy Ways, has undergone two tests of feasibility and is the intervention used in a large, randomized, experimental trial. The preschool curriculum, Be Sun Safe, has been tested in a randomized trial and was found to have a positive effect on preschoolers' knowledge and comprehension of sun safety. Conclusions. Educating children about skin cancer may be an important way of decreasing the incidence of skin cancer. Although informal skin cancer prevention education can be helpful, educational programs preferably should be research based and evaluated for effectiveness before public distribution. The Arizona Cancer Center experience can serve as a model for other programs.
