Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a critical engine that powers a range of technology solutions. It is rapidly playing a vital role in supply chain and operations management. In this paper, we present a research agenda of how researchers and practitioners alike can study the potential adoption of AI-powered tools for benefits in the supply chain. We draw on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology and suggest directions for research that leverage a mixed-methods research approach. Because these technologies are in a nascent stage and evolving rapidly, a mixed-methods approach will allow for a careful examination of potential features and how their adoption can be fostered, with specific benefits in mind. OBJECTIVE: Currently, diagnosis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea relies on a multimodal approach, increasing costs and ultimately delaying diagnosis. In the United States and internationally, the crux of such a diagnosis relies on confirmation testing (via biomarkers) and localization (e.g., imaging). Biomarker testing may require analysis at an outside facility, resulting in delays diagnosis and treatment. In addition, specialized imaging may be nonspecific and often requires an active leak for diagnosis. There remains a clear need for innovative new technology. METHODS: A comprehensive review was conducted on both foundational and innovative scholarly articles regarding current and emerging diagnosis modalities for CSF. RESULTS: Current modalities in CSF rhinorrhea diagnosis and localization include laboratory tests (namely, B2T immunofixation), imaging (CT and/or MRI) with or without intrathecal administration, and surgical exploration. Each of these modalities carry flaws, risks, and benefits, ultimately contributing to delays in diagnosis and morbidity. Promising emerging technologies include lateral flow immunoassays (LFI) and biologically functionalized field-effect transistors (BioFET). Nevertheless, these carry some drawbacks of their own, and require further validation. CONCLUSION: CSF rhinorrhea remains a challenging diagnosis, requiring a multimodal approach to differentiate from nonpathologic causes of rhinorrhea. Current methods in diagnosis are imperfect, as the ideal test would be a readily accessible, inexpensive, rapid, highly accurate point-of-care test without the need for excess fluid or specialized processing. This systematic literature review synthesises the literature on human centric IN 4.0 and IN 5.0 while exploring driving forces behind the transition from technocentric IN 4.0 to value centric IN 5.0 using the principles of the multiple level perspective (MLP). Works that discuss contextual, regime and niche level factors which impact on the transition were explored. The Covid- 19 pandemic and Climate change are identified as key contextual, 'Landscape', factors impacting the transition while Trust, Mass personalisation and Autonomy are highlighted as key Regime factors. In terms of Niche innovations, Advanced Extended reality technologies, Cobots/ Advanced Robotics, and Advanced AI are often connected with landscape or regime issues. Drawing on MLP theory, the study demonstrates that the transition from IN 4.0 towards IN 5.0 is occurring through a reconfiguration pattern. The world's growing population and evolving food habits have created a need for alternative plant protein sources, with pulses playing a crucial role as healthy staple foods. Dry beans are high-protein pulses rich in essential amino acids like lysine and bioactive peptides. They have gathered attention for their nutritional quality and potential health benefits concerning metabolic syndrome. This review highlights dry bean proteins' nutritional quality, health benefits, and limitations, focusing on recent eco-friendly emerging technologies for their obtaining and functionalization. Antinutritional factors (ANFs) in bean proteins can affect their in vitro protein digestibility (IVPD), and lectins have been identified as potential allergens. Recently, eco-friendly emerging technologies such as ultrasound, microwaves, subcritical fluids, high-hydrostatic pressure, enzyme technology, and dry fractionation methods have been explored for extracting and functionalizing dry bean proteins. These technologies have shown promise in reducing ANFs, improving IVPD, and modifying allergen epitopes. Additionally, they enhance the techno-functional properties of bean proteins, making them more soluble, emulsifying, foaming, and gel-forming, with enhanced water and oil-holding capacities. By utilizing emerging innovative technologies, protein recovery from dry beans and the development of protein isolates can meet the demand for alternative protein sources while being eco-friendly, safe, and efficient. HIGHLIGHTS: Dry beans are a source of lysine-rich proteins and high-quality AA for the diet. Physical treatments can reduce the ANFs of beans and increase protein digestibility. Eco-friendly technologies can treat, modify, extract, and separate bean proteins. Conformational changes with protein unfolding improve WHC, EA, and solubility. In the food industry, despite the widespread use of interventions such as preservatives and thermal and non-thermal processing technologies to improve food safety, incidences of foodborne disease continue to happen worldwide, prompting the search for alternative strategies. Bacteriophages, commonly known as phages, have emerged as a promising alternative for controlling pathogenic bacteria in food. This review emphasizes the potential applications of phages in biological sciences, food processing, and preservation, with a particular focus on their role as biocontrol agents for improving food quality and preservation. By shedding light on recent developments and future possibilities, this review highlights the significance of phages in the food industry. Additionally, it addresses crucial aspects such as regulatory status and safety concerns surrounding the use of bacteriophages. The inclusion of up-to-date literature further underscores the relevance of phage-based strategies in reducing foodborne pathogenic bacteria's presence in both food and the production environment. As we look ahead, new phage products are likely to be targeted against emerging foodborne pathogens. Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament of the cervical spine (C-OPLL) is a degenerative disorder that leads to the narrowing of the spinal canal and compression of both the spinal cord and nerve roots. This condition is more prevalent in East Asian populations, with marked regional variations in incidence. Symptoms include neck pain, restricted movement, limb numbness, and motor impairment. In severe cases, surgery may be required. Surgical strategies for C-OPLL can be divided into anterior and posterior approaches, each offering distinct advantages and limitations. Anterior approaches, such as anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF), anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), anterior floating method and vertebral body sliding osteotomy (VBSO), provide the benefit of direct decompression but are technically demanding and carry a higher risk of complications. In contrast, posterior approaches, including laminectomy (with or without instrumented fusion) and laminoplasty (LAMP), offer indirect decompression but may increase the risk of cervical kyphosis. In recent years, innovative techniques like anterior cervical ossified posterior longitudinal ligament en bloc resection (ACOE), anterior controllable antedisplacement and fusion (ACAF), and minimally invasive endoscopic spine surgery have been developed to reduce complications and enhance surgical outcomes. Selecting the appropriate surgical technique requires a thorough assessment of factors such as the severity of the lesion, cervical alignment, and the surgeon's experience. This narrative review examines the differences between these surgical options, discusses their respective advantages and disadvantages, and provides updated insights and recommendations. Horticultural products such as fruits, vegetables, and tea offer a range of important nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and lipids. However, the present yield and quality do not meet the requirements of the rapid population growth associated with global climate change, the decline in horticultural practitioners, poor automation, and epidemic diseases such as COVID-19. In this context, smart horticulture is expected to greatly improve the land output rates, resource-use efficiency, and productivity, all of which should facilitate the sustainable development of the horticulture industry. Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things, and cloud computing, play an important role. This paper reviews past developments and current challenges, offering future perspectives for horticultural chain management. We expect that the horticulture industry would benefit from integration with smart technologies. This requires the use of novel solutions to build a new advanced system encompassing smart breeding, smart cultivation, smart transportation, and smart sales. Finally, a new development approach combining precise perception, smart operation, and smart control should be instituted in the horticulture industry. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are expected to play an essential role in future healthcare systems for saving resources, improving treatment quality and enhancing patient safety. Governments worldwide are preparing for such a future by developing strategies and policies. Drawing on concepts and perspectives from Science and Technology Studies (STS), this article explores how government policies set the agenda for introducing AI in healthcare, using the Norwegian National Health and Hospital Plan 2020–2023 (NHSP) as an example. The article further investigates how the formal expectations included in the NHSP are met with informal anticipations expressed by actors working closer to clinical practices involved in an inquiry process initiated by the policy. Taking a qualitative approach, the article explores what characterises formal expectations of AI in healthcare and how these expectations are contested. The study finds that there are tensions between the different assumptions and that crucial issues concerning the future usage of AI are not yet on the Norwegian Government's agenda. Pairing the forces of the formal expectations with the ambiguous concept of AI, the current chasm between AI development and deployment, and the uncertainties constituted by the contesting elements, the article concludes by introducing a paradox of inevitability. The article explores the use of artificial intelligence tools, specifically ChatGPT‐4 and Google Lens, in dermatological diagnosis. A study compared the diagnostic capabilities of these tools with clinical diagnoses made by dermatologists, showing that ChatGPT‐4 had a higher overall accuracy of 70.15% compared to Google Lens's 45.35%. While ChatGPT‐4 performed better in certain conditions like acne vulgaris and psoriasis, both tools faced challenges with conditions like pityriasis rosea. The study suggests that integrating advanced AI technologies like ChatGPT‐4 could enhance dermatological diagnostic processes, especially in resource‐limited settings, while highlighting the need for further refinement of tools like Google Lens. This article introduces an innovative non‐volatile associative memory (AM) that leverages spintronic synapses, employing magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ) in conjunction with neurons constructed using carbon nanotube field‐effect transistors (CNTFETs). Our proposed design represents a significant advancement in area optimization and outperforms prior designs. We adopt MTJ‐based spintronic devices due to their remarkable attributes, including dependable reconfigurability and nonvolatility. Simultaneously, CNTFETs effectively address the longstanding limitations traditionally associated with MOSFETs. In this work, our proposed design undergoes rigorous simulations that account for process variations. The results demonstrate that our AM system closely approximates its ideal mathematical model, even with significant process variations. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of Tunnel Magnetoresistance (TMR) on the performance of our proposed AM system. Our investigations reveal that, even with a TMR as low as 100%, our design matches and often surpasses the performance of its counterparts operating with a TMR of 300%. This achievement holds profound significance from a fabrication standpoint, as fabricating MTJs with high TMR values can be intricate and costly. Overall, our novel AM system represents a significant breakthrough in emerging technologies, harnessing the unique strengths of spintronic synapses and advanced carbon nanotube transistors while robustly addressing challenges in performance and variability. Not all relevant data come in structured formats. We created this teaching case to introduce students to an important data analysis technique that can be used on unstructured data: text analytics. This case focuses on why MD&A disclosures may provide auditors, regulators, and investors with decision-relevant information during the global pandemic. There are a wide variety of tools that can be used to introduce accounting students to text analytics. In the Teaching Notes, we provide instructions for Alteryx, a technology that offers a low-code solution to text analytics. Low-code solutions allow faculty and students to focus on critical thinking and applying text analytics to accounting. The learning objectives are (1) expand students' understanding of text analytics in an accounting setting, (2) develop students' skills necessary for performing text analytics, and (3) expand students' critical thinking skills as they apply text analytics in accounting or business contexts. Conventional ultrasound (US) has been used to incorporate active components into packaging material, but in-pack sonication and its effect on food quality and shelf-life need further exploration. This study aims to examine how US treatment conditions and packaging materials affect aged chicken breast's shelf-life, microbiological, sensory, and physicochemical characteristics, including peroxide value (PV), free fatty acids (FFA), cooking loss (CL), and muscle fiber index (MFI). Samples were sonicated either without packaging (WP) or packed inside low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The results were then compared with untreated and conventionally treated samples. Response surface methodology (RSM) optimized the specific energy consumption (SEC), acoustic power, and product characteristics based on sonication power (4.4, 35.5, and 66.0 W) and time (10, 20, and 30 min). The quality attributes of optimally processed samples were then assessed during 60 days of -18 °C frozen storage. The optimal sonication conditions were identified as 15.46 min of 66 W, corresponding to 5.16 kJ/kg SEC and 17.03 W acoustic power. In-pack sonication was superior to conventional sonication in terms of product quality attributes. Optimized in-pack sonication reduced PV, FFA, and total bacteria count by 15.0, 17.6, and 37.4% but increased CL, MFI, and shelf-life by 4.1, 107.8, and 64.2%, respectively. The proposed in-pack ultrasonics approach could contribute to achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) and sustainable food production, considering the low energy consumption and food waste reduction through delaying food spoilage. The ubiquitous presence of electronic devices demands robust hardware security mechanisms to safeguard sensitive information from threats. This paper presents a physical unclonable function (PUF) circuit based on magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM). The circuit utilizes inherent characteristics arising from fabrication variations, specifically magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) cell resistance, to produce corresponding outputs for applied challenges. In contrast to Arbiter PUF, the proposed effectively satisfies the strict avalanche criterion (SAC). Additionally, the grid-like structure of the proposed circuit preserves its resistance against machine learning-based modeling attacks. Various machine learning (ML) attacks employing multilayer perceptron (MLP), linear regression (LR), and support vector machine (SVM) networks are simulated for two-array and four-array architectures. The MLP-attack prediction accuracy was 53.61% for a two-array circuit and 49.87% for a four-array circuit, showcasing robust performance even under the worst-case process variations. In addition, deep learning-based modeling attacks in considerable high dimensions utilizing multiple networks such as convolutional neural network (CNN), recurrent neural network (RNN), MLP, and Larq are used with the accuracy of 50.31%, 50.25%, 50.31%, and 50.31%, respectively. The efficiency of the proposed circuit at the layout level is also investigated for simplified two-array architecture. The simulation results indicate that the proposed circuit offers intra and inter-hamming distance (HD) with a mean of 0.98% and 49.96%, respectively, and a mean diffuseness of 49.09%. Smart factories act as focal points to the process of Industry 4.0, and for this reason they pose distinct issues in terms of their applicability within manufacturing organizations. The purpose of this research is to establish the challenges and approaches regarding implementation of smart factories, and it will be based on the manufacturing sector only; results will then be used to analyze and verify for a German firm. The study assesses 47 performance variables placed under nine main groups with the support of the BWM. The application of this approach enables the author to classify the barriers and group them by means of the gathered data and the reference to the other experts' opinions from the case study. Main discoveries highlighted the existence of significant challenges such as connectivity, technology, and program complexity; the need for a flexible software solution; and a stable structure for IT support. New pairs of environmental considerations, such as electronic waste and energy, emerged as important issues, together with ethical issues needed for the safety of society and its employees and the management of information. Implications for theory highlight the necessity of elevating the status of challenges and incorporating applicable factors to improve the appreciation of subjects like e-waste and ethical SCM as priorities. Application-based research suggests conceptual frameworks for smart manufacturing system definition and functioning, with a strong focus on the strategic approach to prioritization and flexibility. Shortcomings are likely to involve the use of consultant advice and the fact that the conclusions are industry-specific. The further study about this subject could be done from a cross-industry perspective, as well as employing integration of new advanced technologies such as blockchain and AI to take the industrial sector to new frontiers of digitalization. Compared to traditional lower-limb prostheses (LLPs), intelligent LLPs are more versatile devices with emerging technologies, such as microcontrollers and user-controlled interfaces (UCIs). As emerging technologies allow a higher level of automation and more involvement from wearers in the LLP setting adjustments, the previous framework established to study human factors elements that affect wearer-LLP interaction may not be sufficient to understand the new elements (e.g., transparency) and dynamics in this interaction. In addition, the increased complexity of interaction amplifies the limitations of the traditional evaluation approaches of wearer-LLP interaction. Therefore, to ensure wearer acceptance and adoption, from a human factors perspective, we propose a new framework to introduce elements and usability requirements for the wearer-LLP interaction. This paper organizes human factors elements that appear with the development of intelligent LLP technologies into three aspects: wearer, device, and task by using a classic model of the human-machine systems. By adopting Nielsen's five usability requirements, we introduce learnability, efficiency, memorability, use error, and satisfaction into the evaluation of wearer-LLP interaction. We identify two types of wearer-LLP interaction. The first type, direct interaction, occurs when the wearer continuously interacts with the intelligent LLP (primarily when the LLP is in action); the second type, indirect interaction, occurs when the wearer initiates communication with the LLP usually through a UCI to address the current or foreseeable challenges. For each type of interaction, we highlight new elements, such as device transparency and prior knowledge of the wearer with the UCI. In addition, we redefine the usability goals of two types of wearer-LLP interaction with Nelson's five usability requirements and review methods to evaluate the interaction. Researchers and designers for intelligent LLPs should consider the new device elements that may additionally influence wearers' acceptance and the need to interpret findings within the constraints of the specific wearer and task characteristics. The proposed framework can also be used to organize literature and identify gaps for future directions. By adopting the holistic usability requirements, findings across empirical studies can be more comparable. The rollout of electric vehicles and photovoltaic panels is essential to mitigate climate change. However, they depend on technology‐critical elements (TCEs), which can be harmful to human health and whose use is rapidly expanding, while recycling is lacking. While mining has received substantial attention, in‐use dissipation in urban areas has so far not been assessed, for example, corrosion and abrasion of vehicle components and weather‐related effects affecting thin‐film photovoltaic panels. Therefore, the question arises to which extent TCEs dissipate during use and which potential non‐occupational human health impacts could occur. We assessed the available information on urban in‐use dissipation and human health concerns and conducted exploratory modeling of in‐use technology stocks, in‐ and outflows, and in‐use dissipation of neodymium, dysprosium, lanthanum, praseodymium, cerium, gallium, germanium, and tellurium contained in 21 vehicle and renewable energy technologies, for Vienna, Austria. In prospective scenarios, TCE dynamics in a trend‐continuation vis à vis official city policy plans and a more ambitious transition scenario were then assessed. We find that electrifying the vehicle fleet without demand‐reduction is the main driver of TCE consumption, effectively doubling cumulative end‐of‐life outflows to 3,073 [2,452–3,966] t and cumulative in‐use dissipation to 9.3 [5.2–15.7] t by the year 2060. Sufficiency‐based measures could reduce demand and in‐use dissipation well below levels with continued trends, thus highlighting the need to combine decarbonization with demand‐reducing measures. These results help assess potential future in‐use dissipation dynamics and inform discussions about potential public health hazards associated with exposure to TCEs accumulating in the urban environment. This commentary discusses the advantages and benefits of Pillar 2 of the Australia-United Kingdom-United States of America Arrangement for small states such as New Zealand. The commentary focuses on four issues: (1) the potential vision for a future Pillar 2; (2) the advantages of early membership of Pillar 2; (3) implications of commercially-driven emerging technologies and products; (4) the push factor of China's technology dominance strategy. A debate is underway in New Zealand over whether the nation should join AUKUS Pillar 2 that involves collaborating and sharing of advanced emerging technologies. Most of the commentary has been critical, yet rarely do New Zealand's domestic critics acknowledge the potential benefits or strategic reasoning underlying the New Zealand's government's decision to consider the pact. This article offers a rejoinder to insert balance into the discourse. It argues that the advanced technologies involved in Pillar 2 will be critical in future conflicts, and that New Zealand needs them if it is to remain interoperable with like-minded militaries. It may also act as an economic accelerator for New Zealand's budding tech industry, and future-proof New Zealand's access to advanced technologies in a bifurcating global technology ecosystem. AUKUS is also part of a region-wide geostrategic re-balancing initiative in response to China's military buildup – it may strengthen deterrence against potential Chinese aggression. The article also considers the issue of New Zealand's perceived trade dependency on China and how this is a factor in Wellington's deliberations, and then challenges the critique that New Zealand does not have relevant capabilities or expertise to benefit the AUKUS members. Against the backdrop of the increasing copper demand in a low-carbon economy, this work statistically forecasted the distribution of China's copper tailings for the first time, and then characterized them as finely crushed and low-grade mining solid wastes containing copper mainly in the form of chalcopyrite, bornite, covelline, enargite and chalcocite based on available research data. China is the globally leading refined copper producer and consumer, where the typical commercial-scale bioleaching of copper tailings is conducted in the Dexing, Zijinshan and Jinchuan mining regions. And these leaching processes were compared in this study. Widely used chemolithoautotrophic and mesophilic bacteria are Acidithiobacillus, Leptospirillum, Acidiphilium, Alicyclobacillus and Thiobacillus with varied metal resistance. They can be used to treat copper sulfide tailings such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, enargite, chalcocite, bornite and covellite under sufficient dissolved oxygen from 1.5 to 4.1 mg/L and pH values ranging from 0.5 to 7.2. Moderate thermophiles (Acidithiobacillus caldus, Acidimicrobium, Acidiplasma, Ferroplasma and Sulfobacillus) and extreme thermophilic archaea (Acidianus, Metallosphaera, Sulfurococcus and Sulfolobus) are dominant in leaching systems with operating temperatures higher than 40 °C. However, these species are vulnerable to high pulp density and heavy metals. Heterotrophic Acidiphilium multivorum, Ferrimicrobium, Thermoplasma and fungi use organic carbon as energy to treat copper oxides (malachite, chrysocolla and azurite) and weathered sulfides (bornite, chalcocite, digenite and covellite) under a wide pH range and high pulp density. We also compared autotrophs in a planktonic state or biofilm to treat different metal sulfides using various sulfur-cycling enzymes involved in the polysulfide or thiosulfate pathways against fungi that produce various organic acids to chelate copper from oxides. Finally, we recommended a bioinformatic analysis of functional genes involved in Fe/S oxidization and C/N metabolism, as well as advanced representation that can create new possibilities for the development of high-efficiency leaching microorganisms and insight into the mechanisms of bioleaching desired metals from complex and low-grade copper tailings. Carrots are root vegetables rich in nutrients and antioxidants. Phytochemicals present in them need to be preserved at an appropriate level for human health. Therefore, novel processing techniques have been utilized to maintain the nutritional composition, functional properties, and phytochemical profile of carrots. Furthermore, emerging technologies in carrot processing are also being developed to meet specific consumer demands for safe, wholesome, and minimally processed products. These novel procedures also result in environmentally friendly, sustainable food production methods that consume less energy and water while overcoming the drawbacks of conventional food processing methods. This review seeks to explain the fundamental concepts behind these emerging technologies as well as the current state of knowledge about their effects on biological cells, enzymes, and food components. The discussions on current and new applications will focus on the links between process, structure, function, and recent developments in carrot processing. The primary discoveries in the review paper are centered around the minimal processing of carrots using innovative technologies to satisfy consumer preferences while preserving their fundamental functional quality. While these methods involve mild heat treatment that impacts carrot vegetative cells, they result in increased availability of bioactive components and improvements in texture, flavor, carotenoids, total phenolic content, and more. Additionally, significant key findings include the elimination of microbes and enzymatic inactivation, which extend the shelf life of both raw and processed carrot products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explores the impact of adopting emerging Industry 4.0 technologies on firm growth by analysing a panel dataset of Korean manufacturing firms. It finds that the impact differs depending on the types of technology implementation (including purpose and applications) and corporate entrepreneurship. Emerging technologies are leading the fourth industrial revolution, bringing profound changes to modern life. However, the contagion of public risk perceptions pertaining to these technologies may result in new social stability risks according to the social amplification of risk framework (SARF). As such, understanding the formation and contagion mechanisms behind public risk perceptions of emerging technologies is critical to promoting their increased receptivity. Based on an evolutionary game theoretical approach to complex networks, this paper constructs a social contagion model of the risk perception of emerging technologies and uses simulations to analyze the influence of factors such as individual cognition and social environment. Results indicate the following: (1) the rate of risk perception contagion gradually increases with the level of individual risk perception and trust in communicators; (2) the risk perception contagion rate gradually decreases as the level of risk governance participation increases; and (3) comparing different social networks, kinship networks have a greater effect than social media networks on risk perception contagion. This study investigates the in vitro digestion of vacuum-impregnated yam bean snacks enriched with Pediococcus acidilactici and mango seed polyphenols, focusing on bacterial survival and polyphenol bioaccessibility. The snacks were prepared by vacuum impregnation (VI) with solutions containing either mango seed extract, P. acidilactici, or a combination of both, followed by dehydration. The antimicrobial activity of the treatments was assessed against pathogens, revealing limited effectiveness, likely due to insufficient concentrations of mango seed extract and the intrinsic resistance of the bacteria. VI of mango seed extract improved the total soluble phenols (TSP) content up to 400% and maintained the initial probiotic concentration (106 cell/mL). In vitro digestion was performed to simulate gastrointestinal conditions, measuring the stability of TSP and the survival of P. acidilactici. The results indicated that the viability of P. acidilactici fluctuated throughout the digestion process (106 to 104 log UFC/g), the polyphenols showed varying degrees of bioaccessibility (11 to 30%), and the TSP content in the intestinal fraction ranged from 1.95 to 6.54 mg GAE/g. The study highlights the potential of VI for incorporating functional components into plant-based snacks, though further optimization is necessary to enhance the stability of P. acidilactici and the effectiveness of the bioactive ingredients. Apple waste (APW) is the residual product after apple processing, including apple peel, apple core, apple seed, and other components. A large quantity of APW produced is abandoned annually, leading to serious resource waste and environmental pollution. APW is rich in natural active compounds, such as pectin, polyphenols, fatty acids, and dietary fiber, which has a good use value. This paper reviewed the current research on recovering active components from APW. The traditional extraction methods (acid, alkali, physical, enzyme, etc.) and the novel extraction methods (SWE, UAE, MAE, RFAE, etc.) for the recovery of pectin, polyphenols, apple seed oil, apple seed protein, and dietary fiber from APW were systematically summarized. The basic principles, advantages, and disadvantages of different extraction methods were introduced. The requirements of different extraction methods on extraction conditions and the effects of different extraction methods on the yield, quality, and functional activity of extracted products were analyzed. The challenges and future study direction of APW extraction have prospected. This paper aims to provide a reference for other researchers interested in APW extraction, improve the utilization rate of APW and extend the value chain of the apple industry. In this study, we aim to broaden the landscape of emerging technologies applicable to the fashion sector (ETF) through the use of grey literature. While overlooked, the grey literature has merit in providing a rich outlook from otherwise commercially published literature. To investigate this evidence, a total of 698 grey documents from the year 2012 to 2023 found in the Scopus database were screened and analyzed using VosViewer. The results of the bibliometric analysis are used to map potential trajectories of emerging technologies that can be used in the fashion industry. In recent years, propelled by societal transformations and technological advancements, emerging technologies founded upon diverse disciplines such as financial and information technology have rapidly evolved. Identifying the trends associated with these emerging technologies and extracting their salient topics is crucial in order to accurately grasp the developmental trajectory of these tools and for their efficient utilization. In this study, we chronologically categorize information derived from five types of multi-source data, including journal articles, patent inventions, and industry reports, into distinct periods. We employ the LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) topic model to identify emerging technological themes within these periods and utilize a dual-index theme lifecycle analysis method to construct a hotspot theme distribution map, thereby facilitating the extraction of significant themes. Through empirical research on blockchain financial technology, we ultimately identify 22 thematic areas of blockchain finance and extracted eight prominent themes, including financial technology, cross-border payments, digital invoices, supply chain finance, and decentralization. By analyzing these themes alongside their respective popularity levels, we validate that the methods above can be used to effectively identify emerging technological hotspots and illuminate their developmental directions. Metabolomics aims for comprehensive characterization and measurement of small molecule metabolites (<1700 Da) in complex biological matrices. This study sought to assess the current understanding and usage of metabolomics in laboratory medicine globally and evaluate the perception of its promise and future implementation. A survey was conducted by the IFCC metabolomics working group that queried 400 professionals from 79 countries. Participants provided insights into their experience levels, knowledge, and usage of metabolomics approaches, along with detailing the applications and methodologies employed. Findings revealed a varying level of experience among respondents, with varying degrees of familiarity and utilization of metabolomics techniques. Targeted approaches dominated the field, particularly liquid chromatography coupled to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, with untargeted methods also receiving significant usage. Applications spanned clinical research, epidemiological studies, clinical diagnostics, patient monitoring, and prognostics across various medical domains, including metabolic diseases, endocrinology, oncology, cardiometabolic risk, neurodegeneration and clinical toxicology. Despite optimism for the future of clinical metabolomics, challenges such as technical complexity, standardization issues, and financial constraints remain significant hurdles. The manufacturing sector, energy sector, and mobility businesses can all benefit from the use of emerging technology. A crucial part of modernizing industries is utilizing emerging technologies. This research aimed to examine how the Global South can adopt and maximize emerging technology opportunities. The research was qualitative in nature, and the focus was on economies in the Global South. Random sampling to select 40 economies from the four continents that fall under the Global South which were Africa, Asia and the Pacific, the Arab Region, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Research articles on the subject matter were collected from Google Scholar and other online repositories. Document analysis was used under the data analysis section. This research aimed to examine how the Global South can adopt and maximize emerging technology opportunities. The research findings described challenges, such as poor technological policies, high prices, and taxation, a lack of financial resources, a lack of information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure and limited experts, digital illiteracy, and how illicit financial flows adversely affect the Global South's ability to tap into emerging technologies. In terms of policy recommendations, it was suggested that the Global South needs to design and implement robust ICT policies, mobilize financial resources, and invest in research and development. This study investigated the English teachers' perceptions of the role of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) practices in basic education in Kerala, India, focusing on language proficiency, research and reflective practice, teacher beliefs and integrated approach to CPD, pedagogical skills, and emerging technologies. The study employed the convergent parallel research method and collected data from 142 teachers. The analysis revealed that the majority of the teachers agree that CPD enhances their confidence in language use necessary for effective ESL teaching, while the classroom observations confirmed a prevalent use of local language in classroom discourse. Moreover, 65.5% of the teachers engage actively in research due to CPD, covering areas like language skills enhancement, classroom environment improvements, and technology use. Reflective practices revealed that most teachers give constructive feedback, but only a few utilize multiple assessments to gauge student performance. A significant finding is that 52.8% regularly reflect on their teaching strategies, reinforcing selfimprovement and student-centered teaching approaches. More than 80% of the respondents agree that they integrate different professional development practices as a result of CPD programs, while actual classroom practices often isolate language skills such as reading and speaking. Pedagogical improvement through CPD was evident, but a notable number of teachers still disagreed on CPD's significant role in student language development. Emerging technologies remain underutilized, with half of the participants lacking confidence in using them, parallel with the observation data indicating minimal multimedia tool preparation. These findings underscore the need for tailored and contextualized programs focusing on comprehensive technology integration, enhanced research skills, and continuous reflective practices to foster effective ESL teaching in Kerala's basic education sector. This research proposes an efficient alternative for dehydrating cassava bagasse to address the inherent challenges in the handling, transportation, storage, and preservation of this agro–industrial residue generated in cassava starch production plants. This residue is characterized by high moisture retention, considerable volume, and hydrophilic nature, complicating conventional drying methods. This study evaluates the impact of emerging ultrasound (US) and pulsed electric field (PEF) technologies prior to convective drying to enhance the dehydration efficiency of cassava bagasse, aiming at its valorization and contributing to the sustainability of the cassava starch industry. The findings reveal that pretreatment with ultrasound (US) and pulsed electric fields (PEF) significantly reduces the drying time of cassava bagasse compared to convective drying alone. With probe ultrasound at 26 kHz for 30 min, the drying time is reduced by 72% (3.83 h vs. 14.0 h); with bath ultrasound at 37 kHz for 30 min, it is reduced by 56.0% (6.16 h vs. 14.0 h); and with PEF at 7.5 kV/cm for 30 min, it is reduced by 52.4% (6.66 h vs. 14.0 h). These emerging technologies increased the effective diffusivity and modified the molecular structure of the bagasse, thereby improving mass transfer and drying process efficiency. These results are particularly useful for developing more efficient and sustainable strategies for drying agricultural by-products, with direct implications for the post-industrial treatment of agro–industrial residues with high water content. The paper presents the results of a survey conducted among a total of 155 industrial engineering students from a Romanian public university to assess their awareness and concern about the facts and challenges imposed by the ongoing digital transformation. The study is based on a statistical analysis of the answers obtained from a questionnaire that contained closed-ended questions with predefined answers and open-ended questions where the respondents could express a personal point of view. Understanding the students' needs and expectations, as well as the impact of the digital transition on their professional training and integration in a sustainable economy, will serve as a background upon which the quality of study programs can be improved by implementing appropriate measures. The results highlighted the necessity to supplement the curriculum with specialized courses in emerging technologies, to intensify students' counseling on the digital transition, to upgrade the university's infrastructure with equipment and software in the field of emerging technologies, to assist students with insufficient resources, and to stimulate women to participate in skilling, upskilling, and reskilling programs in STEM fields. This study presents the development of a comprehensive model for evaluating the level of readiness of buildings for digital transformation during the pre-construction phase. The proposed model utilizes structural equation modeling (SEM) and includes a full list of key factors for achieving success. This tool is designed to support industry stakeholders in assessing operational efficiency in terms of digital transformation readiness in the pre-construction phase (DTRPC) and analyze the effectiveness and limitations of DTRPC across various management levels. Key success factors were identified through interviews with experts and a review of the relevant literature. These variables were then validated through two rounds of the 8 Delphi technique, which included the input of 13 highly qualified experts. Finally, an online questionnaire was disseminated to industry professionals, who assessed the factors' relative levels of significance. Questionnaire responses were collected from a sample of 300 individuals from different professional fields. SEM was then used to quantitatively analyze the relationships between the various components of the DTRPC success factors. The goal was to determine the impact of each construct on the overall level of readiness. The model underwent a thorough evaluation to determine its strength and stability across several parameters, including accuracy, conformity to multivariate normalcy, and reliability and validity. A hypothesis analysis was also conducted. The collected data were used to develop the proposed DTRPC model, consisting of 30 essential performance indicators grouped into four categories. The use of SEM uncovered a significant correlation between the operational indicators of these critical factors and the construct groups, as well as the influence of effective DTRPC constructs on overall project performance. This research expands the current knowledge by identifying important indications for evaluating the success of the DTRPC model and using them to create a comprehensive global SEM that can be used as a tool for measuring readiness at the pre-construction stage. Fruits and vegetables (F&V) are living tissues that continue to respire after picking, and while this can be controlled by freezing, for the conservation of its components, maintaining its sensory quality. This review aims (i) to review the use of novel combined technologies used in the F&V freezing process, (ii) to evaluate its unconventional variants to obtain high-quality frozen products, including different aspects that influence this thermal process. The basic principles and uses of new technologies (i.e., ultrasound, magnetic fields, high pressure, microwaves, osmotic dehydration, isochoric freezing and cryogenic freezing and unconventional processes) are described. Moreover, was evaluated the impact of each technology on the control of the formation and growth of ice crystals, and its impact on the microstructure and quality characteristics of F&V, as well as their proposed mathematical models. It is concluded that new technologies combined with freezing have a positive and promising effect on process optimization, since their application can minimize the negative effects of traditional freezing methods. Emerging technological advances hold potential to assist the long-term care (LTC) workforce in caring for an aging population in the home and LTC settings. Technology may alter workforce needs and mitigate rising workforce demand. This study identified and assessed emerging technologies that may assist, replace, and/or support recruitment and retention of the LTC workforce and identified barriers and facilitators to their implementation. We identified a variety of technologies with applications for LTC, created a taxonomy of technology types and functions across LTC settings, and conducted semi-structured interviews with a sample of company leaders to assess perceived impact of their products and services on the LTC workforce. Thematic analysis of those interviews found that technology is not currently positioned to replace the LTC workforce but may facilitate work and support worker recruitment and retention. More rigorous evaluation of technologies in LTC and financing mechanisms are needed to support widespread adoption.

Abstract Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament of the cervical spine (C-OPLL) is a degenerative disorder that leads to the narrowing of the spinal canal and compression of both the spinal cord and nerve roots. This condition is more prevalent in East Asian populations, with marked regional variations in incidence. Symptoms include neck pain, restricted movement, limb numbness, and motor impairment. In severe cases, surgery may be required. Surgical strategies for C-OPLL can be divided into anterior and posterior approaches, each offering distinct advantages and limitations. Anterior approaches, such as anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF), anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), anterior floating method and vertebral body sliding osteotomy (VBSO), provide the benefit of direct decompression but are technically demanding and carry a higher risk of complications. In contrast, posterior approaches, including laminectomy (with or without instrumented fusion) and laminoplasty (LAMP), offer indirect decompression but may increase the risk of cervical kyphosis. In recent years, innovative techniques like anterior cervical ossified posterior longitudinal ligament en bloc resection (ACOE), anterior controllable antedisplacement and fusion (ACAF), and minimally invasive endoscopic spine surgery have been developed to reduce complications and enhance surgical outcomes. Selecting the appropriate surgical technique requires a thorough assessment of factors such as the severity of the lesion, cervical alignment, and the surgeon’s experience. This narrative review examines the differences between these surgical options, discusses their respective advantages and disadvantages, and provides updated insights and recommendations.

Abstract Compared to traditional lower-limb prostheses (LLPs), intelligent LLPs are more versatile devices with emerging technologies, such as microcontrollers and user-controlled interfaces (UCIs). As emerging technologies allow a higher level of automation and more involvement from wearers in the LLP setting adjustments, the previous framework established to study human factors elements that affect wearer-LLP interaction may not be sufficient to understand the new elements (e.g., transparency) and dynamics in this interaction. In addition, the increased complexity of interaction amplifies the limitations of the traditional evaluation approaches of wearer-LLP interaction. Therefore, to ensure wearer acceptance and adoption, from a human factors perspective, we propose a new framework to introduce elements and usability requirements for the wearer-LLP interaction. This paper organizes human factors elements that appear with the development of intelligent LLP technologies into three aspects: wearer, device, and task by using a classic model of the human-machine systems. By adopting Nielsen’s five usability requirements, we introduce learnability, efficiency, memorability, use error, and satisfaction into the evaluation of wearer-LLP interaction. We identify two types of wearer-LLP interaction. The first type, direct interaction, occurs when the wearer continuously interacts with the intelligent LLP (primarily when the LLP is in action); the second type, indirect interaction, occurs when the wearer initiates communication with the LLP usually through a UCI to address the current or foreseeable challenges. For each type of interaction, we highlight new elements, such as device transparency and prior knowledge of the wearer with the UCI. In addition, we redefine the usability goals of two types of wearer-LLP interaction with Nelson’s five usability requirements and review methods to evaluate the interaction. Researchers and designers for intelligent LLPs should consider the new device elements that may additionally influence wearers’ acceptance and the need to interpret findings within the constraints of the specific wearer and task characteristics. The proposed framework can also be used to organize literature and identify gaps for future directions. By adopting the holistic usability requirements, findings across empirical studies can be more comparable. At the end of this paper, we discuss research trends and future directions in the human factors design of intelligent LLPs.

Although South African higher education institutions experienced a surge in technology use since apartheid, the COVID-19 pandemic prompted adjustments to technology policies and the adoption of emerging technologies, impacting academics’ teaching roles, research initiatives, and community services due to unfamiliarity with online learning technologies and potential shifts in future roles. This study employs a qualitative interpretivist single-case study to explore academics’ perceived attitudes toward the influence of emerging technologies on their future roles and professional identities. Using Ajzen’s theory of planned behaviour as a lens, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 academics purposively selected based on their technology usage. Thematic analysis of the data reveals three inductive themes. The study highlights academic attitudes toward emerging technology, focussing on embracing innovative technologies to improve efficiency and continuous professional development. The study also reveals academics’ apprehensions about their potential replacement by artificial intelligence and robots. However, academics recognise the irreplaceable human essence of critical thinking abilities and empathy in education. Despite challenges, academics acknowledge the positive impact of technology tools like Turnitin on research integrity and academic practices. The recommendations made included integrating technology-focused courses into academic programmes, prioritising research funding for projects exploring supportive emerging technologies, establishing mechanisms to evaluate technology integration initiatives, and collecting feedback for informed decision-making by policymakers and higher education stakeholders. This study contributes to scholarship on academics’ perspectives on their acceptance of and uncertainties about the impact of ongoing emerging technologies on their future roles and professional identities.

Abstract The ubiquitous presence of electronic devices demands robust hardware security mechanisms to safeguard sensitive information from threats. This paper presents a physical unclonable function (PUF) circuit based on magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM). The circuit utilizes inherent characteristics arising from fabrication variations, specifically magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) cell resistance, to produce corresponding outputs for applied challenges. In contrast to Arbiter PUF, the proposed effectively satisfies the strict avalanche criterion (SAC). Additionally, the grid-like structure of the proposed circuit preserves its resistance against machine learning-based modeling attacks. Various machine learning (ML) attacks employing multilayer perceptron (MLP), linear regression (LR), and support vector machine (SVM) networks are simulated for two-array and four-array architectures. The MLP-attack prediction accuracy was 53.61% for a two-array circuit and 49.87% for a four-array circuit, showcasing robust performance even under the worst-case process variations. In addition, deep learning-based modeling attacks in considerable high dimensions utilizing multiple networks such as convolutional neural network (CNN), recurrent neural network (RNN), MLP, and Larq are used with the accuracy of 50.31%, 50.25%, 50.31%, and 50.31%, respectively. The efficiency of the proposed circuit at the layout level is also investigated for simplified two-array architecture. The simulation results indicate that the proposed circuit offers intra and inter-hamming distance (HD) with a mean of 0.98% and 49.96%, respectively, and a mean diffuseness of 49.09%.

The effects of ultrasound (US) on probiotics, as health-promoting microbes, have attracted the attention of researchers in fermentation and healthy food production. This paper aims to review recent advances in the application of the US for enhancing probiotic cells' activity, elaborate on the mechanisms involved, explain how probiotic-related industries can benefit from this emerging food processing technology, and discuss the perspective of this innovative approach. Data showed that US could enhance fermentation, which is increasingly used to enrich agri-food products with probiotics. Among the probiotics, recent studies focused on Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactococcus lactis, Lactobacillus casei, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Bifidobacteria. These bacteria proliferated in the log phase when treated with US at relatively low-intensities. Also, this non-thermal technology increased extracellular enzymes, mainly β-galactosidase, and effectively extracted antioxidants and bioactive compounds such as phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanins. Accordingly, better functional and physicochemical properties of prebiotic-based foods (e.g., fermented dairy products) can be expected after ultrasonication at appropriate conditions. Besides, the US improved fermentation efficiency by reducing the production time, making probiotics more viable with lower lactose content, more oligosaccharide, and reduced unpleasant taste. Also, US can enhance the rheological characteristics of probiotic-based food by altering the acidity. Optimizing US settings is suggested to preserve probiotics viability to achieve high-quality food production and contribute to food nutrition improvement and sustainable food manufacturing. Thus, in recent years, there has been much research about the recovery of phenolic compounds from food waste. Emerging technologies such as ultrasound, microwave, high hydrostatic pressure, supercritical fluid, pressurized liquid, and pulsed electric field have been accepted as alternative extraction techniques to conventional extraction techniques because of increasing extraction yield and reducing hazardous chemicals, time, and energy. This comprehensive review aims to analyze the ongoing research on applying emerging techniques in the valorization of food waste based on recent research. Also, this gives general extraction mechanisms of these techniques and compares them with each other. The findings discussed through this comprehensive review may be a valuable tool for industry to integrate economical and efficient extraction methods, converting food waste to a high-added value functional product.
