Objective: This teaching case describes the trajectory of internationalization of a Brazilian manufacturer of electric motors: WEG. The study proposes to reach the following objectives: (a) understand the company's process of internationalization from the perspective of international business theories; (b) analyze why the path of internationalization trailed by WEG Automation business unit occurred sequentially to that of WEG Motors; and, (c) reveal if the network of WEG Motors generated positive externalities to the internationalization of WEG Automation. Method: A real case gives the foundation for a teaching case built over primary and secondary data. Primary data was obtained through semi structured interviews with the director and managers of WEG Automation, carried during late 2016. Interviews were transcribed and jointly used with secondary data, acquired from institutional information available at WEG's website and documents. Moreover, interviewers performed direct observations during long visits to the company. Relevance/originality: Examining the actions of a firm's internationalization process is valuable in the context of emerging multinational companies, particularly when considering different units feed on internal and external competences during the process, corroborating aspects of the behavioral approach of the Uppsala Models. Theoretical / Methodological Contributions: Applying the theoretical lenses of International Business, such as the Network and Uppsala Models to explain the actions of a Global firm's internationalization process and, more specifically, to compare the processes of two of its business units - WMO (motors) and WAU (automation). Social / management contributions: This teaching case is recommended for both undergraduate and post-graduate courses in the Administration, Foreign Trade, and International Management fields, for discussions in themes such as: Internationalization of firms, International Business, Internationalization Theories, and Emerging Markets. Using the case helps improving students' analytical competences regarding the reality of an emerging market firm that becomes a global player. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knowledge is at the core of the process models of internationalization, although the impact absorptive capacity has on the internationalization is still unclear. Based on an evolutionary approach to international expansion and learning by a firm, the purpose of this study is to describe the role of absorptive capacity (AC) for the internationalization process of emerging multinational companies. A qualitative study, descriptive and longitudinal, was conducted based on a case study of the biggest cement company of South America. Our findings identified the previous knowledge about internationalization and the new knowledge that was acquired and assimilated on a needbasis case as key factors of international competition. This study showed that even a mature company, leader in its home market, with experience in competition with the main international players, needed to acquire new knowledge about internationalization. The assimilation of knowledge was hampered by the prior knowledge structure and new routines were created before the external direct investment materialized. After the acquisition in the foreign market, the adaptation of routines created in the domestic market was developed. We identify that there are relationships among the elements of absorptive capacity (acquisition, assimilation, transformation, exploitation) and that these affect the internationalization process of emerging market firms. The continuing emergence of Asia as a critically important continent for the foreseeable future has renewed interest in understanding theory and practice in this region. This special issue was designed to shed light on human resource management (HRM) issues in this region, and to help guide future research in and on this region. In this introductory article, we first analyze the growth of HRM scholarship in Asia, by examining the research published over the last twenty-five years. We then describe the genesis of this special issue, and summarize the key themes emerging from the review articles in the issue. These include: psychological contract; work-life interface; corporate social responsibility; multinational corporations and their subsidiaries; the challenges of global talent management; convergence-divergence; state socialism to post-state socialism; and incorporating the context. We further offer suggestions for future research by proposing critical topics and emerging themes, including: employee voice; diversity and inclusion; employee well-being and resilience; preparing and responding to crises; and green human resource management. We conclude by offering theoretical perspectives and highlighting key recent developments which are likely to impact future practice, and should be addressed by scholars., Highlights • This paper analyzes the growth of HRM scholarship in Asia, by examining the research published over the last 25 years. • We provide a summary of the key themes emerging from the review articles in the special issue collection. • We also offer several suggestions for future research that remain under-explored in the Asian context.

PurposeThe aim of this work is to investigate the key factors that lead to a successful deal in the case of acquisitions of Western companies by multinationals from emerging countries (EMNCs).Design/methodology/approachThis study adopts a qualitative paradigm and uses a case study method as a tool of analysis. The case concerns Fondalmec, an Italian unlisted medium-sized joint stock company. The company was acquired in 2007 by the Indian multinational Endurance. Primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews and integrated with secondary data retrieved from relevant documents such as annual reports prepared before and after the acquisition.FindingsResearch findings show that EMNCs have some country-specific characteristics, which should be adequately assessed and realigned to the characteristics of the host country and targets’ resources during both the evaluation phase and the integration process.Research limitations/implicationsThe research limitation is attributed to there being only one case study analysis.Practical implicationsThe study recommends examining the country of origin of the acquirer and suggests EMNCs’ managers to prefer a “light-touch” integration of Western target companies to gain access to their intangible assets and achieve success.Originality/valueThis work differs from much of the existing literature on mergers and acquisitions because it focuses on EMNCs and analyses the target company together with the buyer and their post-operative development strategy. Furthermore, it is one of the few empirical research studies on non-listed companies, which are often overlooked given the greater difficulty of accessing data.

This paper aims at contrasting the impact of the internal and external network on the reverse knowledge transfer process in foreign subsidiaries in Brazil and Brazilian subsidiaries abroad. With regard to foreign subsidiaries, one hundred seventy-two companies were obtained, and as to the database pertinent to subsidiaries of Brazilian firms, the sample acquired consisted of seventy-eight Brazilian subsidiaries abroad. The results show the impact of the network for both types of multinationals, however, the same does not occur with integration.
