Abstract

Purpose: To study the treatment and outcomes of children with retinoblastoma (RB) with extraocular tumor extension (RB-EOE) and compare them with RB without extraocular tumor extension (RB-w/o-EOE). Design: Multicenter intercontinental collaborative prospective study from 2017 to 2020. RB-EOE cases included those with overt orbital tumor extension in treatment-naive patients. Cases with microscopic orbital extension detected postenucleation were excluded from the study. Participants: A total of 319 children with RB-EOE and 3116 children with RB-w/o-EOE. Intervention: Chemotherapy, enucleation, exenteration, radiotherapy. Main Outcome Measures: Systemic metastasis and death. Results: Of the 3435 RB patients included in this study, 309 (9%) were from low-income countries (LIC), 1448 (42%) from lower-middle income, 1012 (29%) from upper-middle income, and 666 (19%) patients from high-income countries. There was an inverse relationship between the percentage of RB-EOE and national income level, with 96 (31%) patients from LIC, 197 (6%) lower-middle income, 20 (2%) upper-middle income, and 6 (1%) patients from high-income countries (P = 0.0001). The outcomes were statistically significant for RB-EOE compared with RB-w/o-EOE: systemic metastasis (32% vs. 4% respectively; P = 0.0001) and metastasis-related death (63% vs. 6% respectively; P = 0.0001). Multimodal treatment was the most common form of treatment (n = 177; 54%) for RB-EOE, with most cases undergoing a combination of intravenous chemotherapy and enucleation (n = 97; 30%). Adjuvant external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) after surgery (enucleation/orbital exenteration) was given in only 68 (21%) cases. Kaplan–Meier analysis for systemic metastasis and metastasis-related death in RB-EOE was 28% and 57% at 1 year, 29% and 60% at 2 years, and 29% and 61% at 3 years, respectively. Abstract

Androgens represent the historical therapeutic backbone of bone marrow failure (BMF) syndromes. However, their role has rarely been analyzed in a prospective setting, and systematic and long-term data regarding their usage, effectiveness and toxicity in both acquired and inherited BMF are currently unavailable. Here, taking advantage of a unique disease-specific international dataset, we retrospectively analyzed the largest cohort so far of BMF patients who received androgens before or in the absence of an allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), re-evaluating their current use in these disorders. We identified 274 patients across 82 European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) affiliated centers: 193 with acquired (median age 32 years) and 81 with inherited (median age 8 years) BMF. With a median duration of androgen treatment of 5.6 and 20 months, respectively, complete and partial remission rates at 3 months were 6% and 29% in acquired and 8% and 29% in inherited disorders. Five-year overall survival and failure-free survival (FFS) were respectively 63% and 23% in acquired and 78% and 14% in inherited BMF. Androgen initiation after second-line treatments for acquired BMF, and after >12 months post diagnosis for inherited BMF were identified as factors associated with improved FFS in multivariable analysis. Androgen use was associated with a manageable incidence of organ-specific toxicity, and low rates of solid and hematologic malignancies. Sub-analysis of transplant-related outcomes after exposure to these compounds showed probabilities of survival and complications similar to other transplanted BMF cohorts. This study delivers a unique opportunity to track androgen use in BMF syndromes and represents the basis for general recommendations on this category of therapeutics on behalf of the Severe Aplastic Anemia Working Party of the EBMT.

3. SERUM TOTAL OXIDANT AND ANTIOXIDANT STATUS IN CHILDREN WITH CANCER

Abstract

Objective: Oxidative stress has a potential role in carcinogenesis. Antioxidant enzymes have neutralizing effect both on cancer initiation, and progression. We aimed to assess the oxidant and antioxidant levels of pediatric cancer patients and to compare the levels in healthy controls. Methodology: The study involved 105 pediatric cancer patients (40 undergoing chemotherapy, 65 survivors) and 40 healthy children. The serum total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) were measured. Results: The TOS and oxidative stress index were lower in pediatric cancer patients compared to the levels in the controls (3.73±1.35 vs. 4.21±1.72 µmol/L; p=0.08; 0.20±0.07 vs. 0.26±0.10; p=0.001, respectively). The mean serum TAS level was higher in patient groups compared to the level in the control (1.87±0.48 vs. 1.63±0.32 mmol/L, p=0.001). The TAS level of children with cancer in survivors was still found to be significantly higher compared to the levels in the control group (1.85±0.45 vs. 1.63±0.32 mmol/L, p=0.005). Radiotherapy, surgery, relapsed disease, presence of metastases and receiving enteral nutritional support caused no change in the TAS/TOS level. Conclusion: It has been revealed for the first time that the serum total antioxidant level increased during cancer treatment and didn't normalize after cessation of therapy for a long time.

Abstract

Loss-of-function mutations in magnesium transporter 1 (MAGT1) gene cause X-linked magnesium deficiency with Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) infection and neoplasm (X-MEN), a disease with quite diverse clinical and immunological consequences. The phenotypic characteristics of the initially described patients included CD4+ T cell lymphopenia, immune deficiency, EBV viremia, and EBV-related lymphoproliferative disease. To date, a total of 25 patients have been reported. The spectrum of the MAGT1 defect ranges from other viral infections (HSV, VZV, CMV, MCV) and sinopulmonary bacterial infections, autoimmune diseases, non-EBV driven lymphoproliferative disease, Castleman disease, HHV8+ Kaposi's sarcoma, vasculitis (Kawasaki) to glycosylation defects in new patients. Here, we report 2 patients from two different families with novel MAGT1 mutations and different clinical features. The first patient presented with B cell lymphoma and low IgM level without recurrent infections. The second patient presented with recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, Kawasaki-like disease, hypogammaglobulinemia, and T cell lymphopenia. X-MEN disease is the first phenotype identified due to MAGT1 mutation. The identification of new mutations and atypical presentations will clarify whether there is a relationship between the genotype and the phenotype and the characteristics of the disease.

Abstract

Microencapsulation is a promising method that has considerable effects on protection of probiotic viability. A variety of coating materials have been utilized to enhance the stability of probiotic microorganisms during the transition through gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this research was to determine optimum coating material combinations for probiotic microencapsulation against gastric conditions. Fructooligosaccharides, peptide, sodium alginate, gelatin and gellan gum were used as entrapment substances to microencapsulate Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus casei Shirota with extrusion technique. The response surface technique was applied to detect the optimum proportion of encapsulation substances against gastric condition. Microencapsulation protected probiotic cultures against stress factors such as simulated gastric juice and bile-salt solution. Optimum rate of encapsulation substances varied according to the type of probiotic bacteria. Test results showed that L. plantarum should be coated with 1.5% alginate, 0.92% gellan gum, 0.18% gelatin, 0.36% peptide and 1.31% fructooligosaccharides for highest protection. L. casei Shirota should also be coated with 2% alginate, 0.98% gellan gum, 0.51% gelatin, 0.86% peptide and 1.98% fructooligosaccharides for highest protection. This research concluded that microencapsulation with encapsulation materials at optimum concentration provided improved protection for the probiotics.

Abstract

Probiotic lactic acid bacteria and their biofilms have antagonistic activity against food spoilage organisms and pathogenic bacteria. Recently, researchers focused on the use of probiotic biofilms for inhibition of pathogenic bacteria. The aim of this research is to improve probiotic biofilms with optimal prebiotic concentration and to determine their inactivation effect on both planktonic cells and biofilm growth of Listeria monocytogenes. Biofilm formations were detected by using microplate method. Prebiotic ingredients were used to form biofilm with highest viable probiotic cell counts and optimal concentrations of prebiotic ingredients were determined according to the response surface method. Biofilm produced by Lactobacillus casei Shirota and Lactobacillus rhamnosus contained 9.46 and 9.66 log cfu/mL viable cell counts, respectively. Optimal prebiotic concentrations were found 3% casein peptone-0% fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) for biofilm formation with highest viable cell counts by L. casei Shirota and 1.5% casein peptone-1.5% FOS for biofilm formation with highest viable cell counts by L. rhamnosus. Probiotic biofilms exhibited inactivation against growth of L. monocytogenes and caused a reduction of 0.66- 2.01 log cfu/mL for planktonic L. monocytogenes and 0.40-1.69 log cfu/ml for L. monocytogenes biofilm. Planktonic cells of L. monocytogenes were observed to be more susceptible to probiotic biofilms than biofilm of L. monocytogenes. Biofilm of L. rhamnosus showed higher inhibition effect on L. monocytogenes growth than L. casei Shirota. These findings showed that biofilms of probiotic Lactobacillus strains used in this study may be excellent candidate for controlling of pathogenic bacteria.

Abstract

Introduction: Various perioperative problems occur in patients operated on brain tumors. While many studies focused on the long-term effects of surgery, few focused on the perioperative period. The aim of this study to evaluate clinical and laboratory features and determining the factors which are effecting the outcome in operated patients for brain tumors our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Methods: Patients who underwent intracranial tumor surgery in the PICU during the eight-year period were retrospectively screened. Results: Seventy-four patients were included in the study, mean age was 60 (1.5-192) months, and supratentorial tumors were detected in 41 (55.4%) patients. The median length of stay (LOS) in PICU of the patients was 5 (1-150) days. When supratentorial tumor localization, ventriculoperitoneal shunt presence, central venous catheter related bloodstream infection, ventilator-associated pneumonia and other infections were evaluated, a statistically significant difference was found between the two groups when patients’ LOS in the PICU is evaluated in 2 groups of more than 15 days (77%) and less than 15 days (23%). In the postoperative period, diabetes insipidus (DI) in 12 (16%), septicemia in 9 (12%), shunt infection in 8 (10%), hydrocephalus in 7 (9%), seizures in 5 (6%), cranial nerve palsy in 5 (6%) in patients. Conclusion: Neurological sequelae increased with younger age and were more common in patients with infratentorial tumors. While a relationship was found between delta sodium and DI in the postoperative first 4 days, without relationship was found with neurological sequelae.

Abstract

Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the urinary bladder is rare and presented as a high grade and an advanced stage tumor. A 79-year old man presented with macroscopic hematuria was carried out transurethral resection. Pathological examination revealed a tumor composed of epitelial and mesenchimal areas which were showed strong positivity with pancytokeratin and vimentin, respectively. We want to present this rare neoplasm of the bladder with clinic and pathologic findings.

Neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) gene rearrangements have been recently identified and developed as one of the biomarkers that have been utilized as new targets for cancer therapy. NTRK gene fusions have taken their place in individualized targeted therapy by being used as a predictive (diagnostic) biomarker as well as a treatment target. Selective inhibitors of NTRK fusion proteins have potent efficacy in the treatment of NTRK fusion-positive solid tumors. Detection of these fussions have become important since the finding of new drugs for which U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted approval are used on the treatment of patients who has NTRK fussions positive cansers. Clinical trials have shown that first generation tyrosine receptor kinase (TRK) inhibitors, larotrectinib (Vitrakvi, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceutical Inc, New Jersey, U.S.) and entrectinib (Rozlytrek, Genentech Inc, California, U.S.), have potent efficacy in the treatment of NTRK fusion positive cancers. In the future, with the increase in the number of comprehensive studies on these drugs further information will become available and beneficial.

Abstract

Background The prognosis is still poor for patients with a metastatic bone tumor and new treatment approaches (anti-VEGF and tyrosine kinase inhibitors vs) are therefore needed. Objectives The aim of our study was to evaluate how the primary and metastatic lesions of our patients with a bone tumor were affected by these treatments and to determine the importance of the 18F-FDG PET method. Patients and Methods Twenty metastatic bone tumor cases were included. Sorafenib and anti-VEGF were added to the standard treatment in cases with widespread metastatic disease at diagnosis or after neoadjuvant chemotherapy showing less than 90% tumor necrosis in the surgical sample. Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging was performed at diagnosis, the preoperative period following neoadjuvant chemotherapy, during postoperative follow-up, and when treatment was discontinued. Results The primary treatment region median SUVmax level decreased from 7.35 to 2.5 in the living patients (n = 16) while there was no significant decrease in the patients who succumbed to the disease (P < 0.001). Comparison of the pre- and post-treatment metastasis region median SUVmax levels in patients with metastatic involvement showed a decrease from 2.1 to 0 in the surviving patients but only from 4.8 to 3.2 in the deceased patients (P < 0.01). Survival results indicated that 28.6% of the patients receiving classical treatment only died while all the patients receiving additional sorafenib and anti-VEGF survived. Conclusions 18F-PET may be a useful technique before and during the follow-up of neoadjuvant treatment in pediatric metastatic bone tumor patients. The addition of sorafenib and anti-VEGF to classical treatment has a favorable contribution to the response and therefore the survival duration.

Abstract

In this study, the effect of microencapsulated L. rhamnosus was investigated on biogenic amine amounts in sucuk during the 6 months storage. Traditional and probiotic sucuk production were occurred with L. plantarum and L. rhamnosus. Probiotic sucuk was produced with free or microencapsulated L. rhamnosus. Microencapsulation protected survival of L. rhamnosus in sucuk. It was observed that biogenic amine amounts of sucuk increased with storage. Putrescine, cadaverine, histamine, tyramine and tryptamine were detected as the most abundant biogenic amines in sucuk. It was also determined that addition of L. rhamnosus plus L. plantarum were reduced effectively biogenic amine amounts in sucuk samples. Total biogenic amine amounts in sucuk without probiotic L. rhamnosus was found higher than in sucuk with probiotic L. rhamnosus. In conclusion, short storage period and the use of probiotic culture are recommended for the production of sucuk with low biogenic amine level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

16. ANTIBACTERIAL AND ANTI-ADHESIVE PROPERTIES OF BIOSURFACTANTS PRODUCED BY YEASTS FROM FOOD WASTE.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to produce biosurfactants by Yarrowia lipolytica, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Rhodotorula glutinis in different growth mediums and to evaluate antimicrobial and antiadhesive potential of these biosurfactants. Inhibition effect of biosurfactants were tested on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This study achieved the biosurfactant production at different amounts with a low-cost fermentative medium (frying oil waste and com maceration liquid) by yeast species. The biosurfactant production yield and inhibitory effect of these biosurfactants were found dependent on composition of growth medium, species of yeast and pathogenic bacteria. The most biomass yield was obtained by Y. lipolytica in medium containing food waste. All biosurfactants had a certain inhibitory activity against pathogens at concentrations of 5 mg/mL and 10 mg/mL. Additionally, biosurfactants (10 mg/mL) indicated antiadhesion effect against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, except E. coli. Despite the several advantages of biosurfactants, there is a few reports related to their use on food products and food processing. Abstract

Introduction TPOG-NBL 2003 national protocol was designed to improve treatment results of the high risk patients by adjunction of stem cell rescue with intensive multimodal therapy. Material and Methods High risk stratification was made according to COG criteria. Just before the third cycle of chemotherapy, patients without progression were allocated into two treatment groups non-randomly by physicians’ and/or parent’s choices guided to the center’s facility, toxicity and social-economical facility to attain the megatherapy. After an induction of 6 chemotherapy cycles, the protocol was divided into two arms which were designed to continue the intensive conventional chemotherapy (CCT), or initiate myeloablative therapy with autologous stem-cell rescue (ASCR). All patients were also given 13-cis-retinoic acid as maintenance therapy. Results Fifty-six percent (272 patients) of all neuroblastoma patients was evaluated as high risk. Response rate to induction chemotherapy was 81% (CR/VGPR: 32%, PR: 49%) in patients at the end of induction chemotherapy. Overall EFS and OS at 3-years were 36% and 45%, respectively. Intention-to-treat analysis documented post-induction (after the six cycles of induction chemotherapy) EFS of 46% in CCT arm (137 patients) and 37% in ASCR group (55 patients) (p= 0.037); whereas, OS was 59% and 43%, respectively (p=0.052). Thirty-one patients (11%) died of treatment-related complications. Conclusion Survival rates of high-risk neuroblastoma have improved over the last decade in Turkey. The main problems when managing these patients were an effective local control, early progression and death. Megatherapy has not augmented the therapeutic end point in our country’s circumstances. However; the better the supportive care and the higher the patients’ compliance is attained, the higher the survival rates might be obtained in Turkish neuroblastoma patients. Mezenterik lipomalar matür yağ hücrelerinin iyi huylu tümörleridir. Genellikle asemptomatik olmalarına rağmen, lokalizasyonlarına ve büyüklüğüne bağlı olarak klinik tablo oluştururlar. Çok nadir görülmelerine rağmen, çok büyümüş dev mezenterik lipomalar kısmi veya tam barsak tıkanıklığına neden olabilirler. Kısmı barsak tıkanıklığı oluşturan lipomalar aralıklı karın ağrısı ve karın şişliği gibi şikayetlere neden olurken, tam barsak tıkanıklığı gelişen olgular akut batın tab- losuyla karşımıza çıkarlar. Tedavileri etkilenmiş barsak bölümüyle bir- likte kitlenin eksize edilmesidir. Bu çalışmada dev mezenterik lipom nedeniyle barsak tıkanıklığı gelişmiş 2 yaşında bir kız olgu ve şu ana kadar ingilizce literatürde yayınlanmış 16 olgunun klinik özellikleri sunulmuştur., Mesenteric lipomas are benign tumors of mature fat cells. They are usually asymptomatic and create a clinical picture that depends on the localization and size of the lipoma. Although rare, unusually large mesenteric giant lipomas can cause partial or complete bowel obstruction. Lipomas resulting in partial bowel obstruction can present with symptoms such as intermittent abdominal pain and abdominal distention. With complete obstruction, a child can present with an acute abdomen. Treatment is the excision of the mass along with the affected portion of bowel. in this case study, a 2-year-old female presented with a bowel obstruction due to the presence of a giant mesenteric lipoma. Clinical features of 16 cases published in the English literature to date are presented.

Abstract

The current report describes a 23-month-old boy with paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma who was incidentally diagnosed as also having an isolated mediastinal cystic lymphangioma. The association of childhood rhabdomyosarcoma with various congenital anomalies and genetic alterations such as p53 mutations have been well known. However, mediastinal cystic lymphangioma has not been reported among the congenital anomalies diagnosed in rhabdomyosarcoma. Both rhabdomyosarcoma and lymphangioma originate from mesenchymal cells. This association may be coincidental or may point to a common genetic and/or developmental disorder of the mesencymal tissue.

22. Antibacterial Effect of Bacteriocinogenic Enterococci from Different Sources on Listeria monocytogenes

In this study, antimicrobial activity of partially purified enterocins and crude bacteriocins from Enterococcus isolates with different sources was investigated against Listeria monocytogenes by disk diffusion assay. Totally 70% of enterococcal isolates (Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium from food and clinical sources) were found as potential bacteriocinogenic strains. Both of food and clinical enterococcal isolates also exhibited antimicrobial properties against L. monocytogenes. Additionally, the present study detected that inhibitory activity was strain-specific. Both crude bacteriocins and partially purified enterocins from E. faecium isolates showed lower antimicrobial activity against L. monocytogenes than E.faecalis isolates. The inhibition diameters obtained withcrude enterocins and partially purified enterocins were respectively ranging from 12.33 mm to 13.25 mm and from 8.66 mm to 9.25 mm. Crude bacteriocins retained antibacterial activity after heat treatment except 120 oC and also remained functional at pH values between 3 and 11. Abstract

Angioleiomyoma is an uncommon type of leiomyoma of the uterus that originates from smooth muscle cells and contains thick-walled vessels. A 45-year-old woman with the complaint of lower abdominal pain was admitted to the hospital. In the operation a ruptured, bleeding uterine tumor was seen. She underwent total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. On pathologic examination of the specimen, the tumor was diagnosed as angioleiomyoma. Here, an unusual clinical presentation of uterine angioleiomyoma was reported.

Sucuk ve pastırma örneklerinden elde edilen laktik asit bakterisi izolatlarının tamamı vankomisin ve siprofloksasine dirençli bulunurken, kloramfenikol, eritromisin ve ampisiline karşı duyarlı bulunmuşlardır. Laktik asit bakterisi izolatlarının bazılarında ayrıca rifampisin, tetrasiklin, ve gentamisin direnci de saptanmıştır. Sucuk ve pastırma örneklerinde farklı direnç profillerinin gözlenmesi geleneksel et ürünlerindeki antibiyotik dirençliliği ile ilgili sistematik bir çalışma yapılması gerekliliğini ortaya koymuştur.

26. Vitamin D Levels and Deficiency Etiology in Cancer Patients with Vitamin D Deficiency at The Time of Diagnosis

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: An important relationship is believed to exist between the potential cancer risk and levels of vitamin D due to its regulatory role in cell differentiation and growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate vitamin D levels and the etiologic factors leading to its deficiency in children with a diagnosis of cancer. METHODS: We first checked the vitamin D levels of 110 pediatric cancer patients diagnosed between 2011 and 2013 and investigated relapse rates in children with low and normal vitamin D levels. In the second stage, we administered a survey to the families of 64 children with a vitamin D level ≤ 20 ng/ml to determine the possible etiological factors for the deficiency. RESULTS: The vitamin D deficiency rate in the 110 children diagnosed with cancer between 2011 and 2013 was 58%. There was a significant increase in relapse risk in children with vitamin D deficiency at the time of diagnosis. Evaluation of the epidemiological factors causing vitamin D deficiency revealed that the families' education and income levels were low and their living conditions were not suitable for an adequate supply of vitamin D. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Many studies have shown that vitamin D is protective against cancer and has beneficial prognostic effects. However, many families did not have sufficient information on the importance of vitamin D in childhood. We therefore believe it is important to take preventive measures against vitamin D deficiency during the treatment process of childhood cancers.

Abstract

In this study, it was investigated that the inhibition effect of some lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus NCC68, Lactobacillus casei Shirota, Lactobacillus rhamnosus (Ezal, commercial starter cultures)) which possessed with probiotic characteristics, against Bacillus cereus, Salmonella Enteritidis, Escherichia coli, Escherichia coli 0157:H7 ATCC 35150 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Besides, the inhibitory effect of probiotic cultures which used with meat and meat product additives that garlic extract over the antagonistic effects of sensitive pathogens were investigated in vitro. Consequently, the whole of lactic acid bacteria and garlic extract which were used in this study, showed inhibition effects against all selected pathogenic bacteria. Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 was determined as the most sensitive pathogenic bacteria while Bacillus cereus was the most resistant bacteria against lactic acid bacteria and garlic extract. There was a distinctive increase in inhibition effects were observed by used of a combination with lactic acid bacteria and garlic extract.

Çalışmamızda ticari probiyotik gıda örneklerinden Lactobacillus spp., Lactobacillus acidophilus ve Bifidobacterium spp. türleri izole edilmiş ve Kirby-Bauer Disk Difüzyon yöntemi ile antibiyotik dirençlilikleri analiz edilmiştir. Lactobacillus spp. izolatlarında vankomisin (%20), tetrasiklin (%20), ampisilin (%20), gentamisin (%20) ve siprofloksasine (%80) karşı direnç saptanırken, izolatların eritromisin (%100), kloramfenikol (%100) ve nitrofurantoin’e (%100) ise duyarlı oldukları bulunmuştur. Lactobacillus acidophilus izolatlarının ise gentamisin (%25) ve siprofloksasine (%75) karşı dirençli oldukları saptanırken, tüm L. acidophilus izolatlarının vankomisin, eritromisin, tetrasiklin, ampisilin, kloramfenikol, ripamfisin ve nitrofurantoin’e duyarlı oldukları bulunmuştur. Bifidobacterium spp. izolatının vankomisin, tetrasiklin, ampisilin ve siprofloksasin’e karşı dirençli olduğu, buna karşın eritromisin, gentamisin, kloramfenikol ve nitrofurantoin’e duyarlı olduğu bulunmuştur.

Abstract

Objective: The prognostic factors and a new childhood prognostic index after autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) in patients with relapsed/refractory Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) were evaluated. Materials and Methods: The prognostic factors of 61 patients who underwent AHSCT between January 1990 and December 2014 were evaluated. In addition, the Age-Adjusted International Prognostic Index and the Childhood International Prognostic Index (CIPI) were evaluated for their impact on prognosis. Results: The median age of the 61 patients was 14.8 years (minimummaximum: 5-20 years) at the time of AHSCT. There were single relapses in 28 patients, ≥2 relapses in eight patients, and refractory disease in 25 patients. The chemosensitivity/chemorefractory ratio was 36/25. Abstract

Patients who survive Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) are at increased risk of secondary neoplasms (SNs). A wide variety of SNs have been reported, including leukemias, non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, and solid tumors, specifically breast and thyroid cancers. Herein we report subsequent neoplasms in four patients with HL receiving chemoradiotherapy. It is interesting that three SNs, fibrosarcoma, thyroid carcinoma, and retrobulbar meningioma, were observed in the radiation area in one of our patients. A hypopharyngeal epithelioid malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor as an unusual secondary malignant neoplasm developed in another patient, while a benign thyroid nodule and invasive ductal breast carcinoma were observed at different times in the female patient. Follicular adenoma of the thyroid gland developed in one of our patients.

Abstract

Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common childhood malignant intraocular tumor. Although enucleation and external beam radiotherapy have been historically used, today the most commonly used eye-sparing approach is chemotherapy. Chemotherapy can be used in both intraocular and extraocular RB cases. Chemotherapeutic agents may be applied in different ways, including systemic, subconjunctival, intra-arterial and intravitreal routes. The main purposes of application of systemic therapy are to reduce the tumor size for local treatment (chemoreduction), or to reduce the risk of metastasis after enucleation surgery (adjuvant therapy). Intra-arterial chemotherapy with the current name “super-selective intra-arterial infusion therapy” could be applied as primary therapy in tumors confined to the retina or as a secondary method in tumor recurrence. The most important advantage of intra-arterial therapy is the prevention of systemic chemotherapy complications. Intravitreal chemotherapy is administered in the presence of persistent or recurrent vitreous seeding. The term “extraocular RB” includes orbital invasion and metastatic disease. Current treatment for orbital invasion is neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgical enucleation and adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy after surgery. In metastatic disease, regional lymph node involvement, distant metastases, and/or central nervous system (CNS) involvement may occur. Among them, CNS involvement has the worst prognosis, remaining at almost 100% mortality. In metastatic disease, high-dose salvage chemotherapy and autologous hematopoietic stem cell rescue therapy are the possible treatment options; radiotherapy could also be added to the protocol according to the side of involvement.

32. Antibiotic resistance of enterococci, coagulase negative staphylococci and Staphylococcus aureus isolated from chicken meat

Abstract

We determined the antibiotic resistance of enterococci, coagulase negative staphylococci, and Staphylococcus aureus isolated from chicken meat samples. The antibiotic resistance of the isolated strains was estimated by the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method (according to the NCCLS document M2-A9 suggestions). It was found that all strains of Enterococcus spp. were resistant to tetracycline, 75% of them were resistant to ciprofloxacin, and 50% of them were resistant to erythromycin, vancomycin, and chloramphenicol. Also all strains of S. aureus were resistant to tetracycline and 25% of S. aureus strains were resistant to erythromycin and chloramphenicol, whereas all strains of S. aureus were sensitive to teicoplanin and 25% of them were sensitive to vancomycin and ciprofloxacin. As for the isolate of coagulase negative staphylococci (CNS), 68.1% of them were resistant to erythromycin, 77.2% of them were resistant to tetracycline, 59% of them were resistant to vancomycin, 9% of them were resistant to teicoplanin, and 27.2% of them were resistant to both chloramphenicol and ciprofloxacin. As a result, it was found that most of the strains (all of S. aureus and Enterococcus spp., also 77.2% CNS) were resistant to tetracycline.

Abstract

WOS: 000375613200005, Eight samples of mature sourdough were collected from five provinces of Turkey. Lactic acid bacteria and yeasts were isolated and identified and used in different combinations to produce liquid sourdoughs. Microbiological and physicochemical characteristics of the experimental sourdoughs made with different flour types and dough yields were studied. The main lactic acid bacteria species identified were Lactobacillus (L.) sanfranciscensis, Pediococcus pentosaceus, L. plantarum, L. namurencis, L. rossiae, Leuconostoc mesenteroides and L. zymae. L. spicheri, L. paralimentarius, L. mindensis, L. farciminis, L. acetotolerans, L. casei, Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus durans were also found in sourdoughs at subdominant levels. Among yeasts, mainly Saccharomyces cerevisiae, but also Pichia guiliermondii and Torulaspora delbrueckii were the predominant species of yeasts identified in sourdoughs. Lactic acid bacteria and yeasts of liquid sourdoughs after fermentation were in the range of 9.61-9.89 log cfu/g and 6.55-7.36 log cfu/g, respectively. Various chemical parameters such as pH, total titratable acidity, lactic and acetic acids, ethanol and sugars were determined for liquid sourdoughs. Acidification and metabolite contents of these products were different, depending on the starter culture, flour type and dough yield. 34. Late effects of osteosarcoma and its treatment in pediatric patients: A single-center experience.

Abstract

Purpose: The success of osteosarcoma treatment strategies improved survival rates. The need of diagnosing and managing adverse effects is increasing. We aimed to investigate the outcomes and late results of pediatric osteosarcoma treatment in the survivors., Methods: Out of osteosarcoma patients (n=54), we assessed the long-term outcomes of survivors (n=39) diagnosed from 2002-2018. We compared the survivors' (n=39) health status (cardiac, renal, neurologic, psychiatric, physical limitations), pain, and psychosocial outcomes (education level, smoking history, and alcohol consumption, marital status, parenthood, health care services usage) with their siblings (n=77). The quality of life and overall survival of amputee and nonamputee survivors are also compared. We provided the retrospective data from the files and phone calls and used Kaplan Meier survival analysis, Ki-Kare, and t-test. Results The overall survival (OS) of children with osteosarcoma (n=54) who survived at 2 years and 5 years from the diagnosis was 90.7 and 77.8%, respectively. These patients achieved 2- year event-free survival (EFS) of 70.4% and 5-year EFS of 57.4%. Thirty-nine survivors of osteosarcoma were compared with 77 sibling controls. Osteosarcoma survivors were more likely than the sibling cohort to report adverse health status containing nephrotoxicity (5.1 vs 0%) (p=0.045), cardiotoxicity (10.3 vs 0%)(p<0.01), neurotoxicity (5.1 vs 1.7%) (p=0.045), activity limitations (64 vs 1.3%)(p<0.01) and pain (12.8 vs 0%) (p=0.002). Survivors' educational status (p=0.014), marital status (5.1 vs 32.5%)(p=0.001), employment (2.6 vs 28.6)(p < 0.001), parenthood (0 vs 29.9%)(p < 0.001) were negatively affected compared with the control group. The prevalence of smoking, alcohol use, psychiatric treatment, and deafness were similar. The amputees (n=9) had an OS rate of 55.6%, and the nonamputees (n=45) had 75.6%. We found similar quality of life results between them., Conclusion: Long-term survivors of pediatric osteosarcoma are at significant risk of chronic health conditions, physical limitations, and pain up to 16 years follow up. Follow-up clinics and clinical guidelines are required for the survivors of children with osteosarcoma.
