Objective. To describe and analyze the experiences of adolescent women with a history of pregnancy and identify the barriers to acceptance and continuity of post obstetric event contraception (POEC). Materials and methods. Secondary analysis of the qualitative component of two mixed studies in three entities with high, medium, and low proportion of adolescent pregnancy in México. Thirty semi-structured interviews with adolescent mothers were analyzed under the principles of grounded theory. Results. The barriers identified were the lack of agency and empowerment of adolescent mothers to plan a subsequent pregnancy; influence of the partner and family; and institutional obstacles such as partial counseling, poor follow-up, technical failure of the contraceptive method, presence of side effects, and shortages. Conclusions. The POEC strategy should consider the specific needs and barriers of this population to design and implement more effective interventions to extend the intergestational period beyond adolescence.
