This paper presents some results of research aimed at defining a parametric tool for modelling complex decorative apparatuses of domes based on geometric rules definition and building techniques. MaTiDo, Majolica Tiles on Domes, is an adaptive tool that allows a user to place “fish scale” on revolution domes and oval or elliptical ones, on domes with ribs and domes without ribs. MaTiDo can be used to reproduce the look of the real domes and virtually reconstruct domes modified or destroyed. These ideal models are suitable for different uses, for Cultural Heritage dissemination or in HBIM process. The main geometric problem to address is how to evenly distribute on doubly curvature surfaces flat tiles that are all the same size. MaTiDo is being developed for colour automatic distribution on tiles in order to generate different decorative patterns on extrados dome surfaces.

Reality-based tools for architectural surveys allow the acquisition of multiple integrated data (morphological, material, colorimetric). The number and heterogeneity of the acquired data represent an advantage for information gathering; yet, at the same time, this calls for new considerations regarding big data management and output. Following these premises, this article presents the first results of an ongoing research activity aimed to the definition and testing of parametric tools (VPL for interoperability – BIM/H-BIM) for RGB-based, semi-automated thematic representations of the conservation state of architectural façades. Specifically, the contribution proposes an algorithmic generative definition for decay phenomena mapping. This was experimented on the façades of the Church of the Archconfraternity of Santa Maria delle Grazie e Sant’Andrea Apostolo (Naples, Italy), surveyed through digital terrestrial photogrammetry and thermographic cameras. Orthophotos and thermographic mosaics constitute the types of RGB mapping used to validate the designed tool. This process is aimed to the visualization/modeling of data related to complex phenomena and to the rapid production of graphs for documentary and preventive purposes.

[EN] The technological approach of the second digital era promotes voxel, volumetric pixel (picture element) as the most suitable tool for the management and communication of complex architectural shapes. The process of voxellisation disturbs and fragments the fluid and abstract image of the liquid architecture characterizing the first digital age. From figured to built architecture, this process manipulates architectural image looking for an optimized technological solution. The most recent artistic and architectural experiments, produced by generative and computational digital tools, testify a technically advanced design approach. Therefore, the goal of this contribution is to reflect about the visual impact that visual immediacy and economic-constructive optimization, both as expression of contemporary society, determines on the representation of architectual complexity., [ES] La actividad de investigación dedicada a la gestión y comunicación de formas arquitectónicas complejas favorece al voxel, volumetric pixel (picture element), como principal herramienta tecnológica que caracteriza la producción física y virtual de la segunda era digital. El proceso de voxelización distorsiona y fragmenta la imagen fluida y abstracta de la arquitectura líquida que caracteriza la primera era digital. Desde la arquitectura calculada a la construida, el proceso de voxelización manipula la imagen del proyecto para encontrar una solución tecnológicamente más accesible. Las imágenes de los experimentos artísticos y arquitectónicos más recientes, resultado de herramientas digitales generativas y computacionales consolidadas, testifican un enfoque de diseño caracterizado por un tecnicismo avanzado.Por lo tanto, esta comunicación nos invita a reflexionar sobre el impacto visual de la necesidad actual de inmediatez resolutiva y optimización económica constructiva, expresiones de la sociedad contemporánea, que son determinantes en la figuración del concepto de complejidad arquitectónica.

This research work into Evolutionary Computing field aims at improving a dataset of algorithmic gen-erative definitions able to return an optimized ‘semi–ideal’ curve that best fits a generic reality–based profile, starting from some of its points. This paper shows GAs_Genetic Algorithms applications especially with regards to study, interpretation and definition of generic polycentric curves. Current VPL tools (Galapagos–Rhino, McNeel) allow to test Evolutionary Theories for problem solving and decision makingin architectural research field. According to a human driven approach, an operator defines GENOME, FUNCTION and FITNESS to drive the Evolutionary Solver towards optimized solutions. Some case studies from Historical/Existent Architectural Heritage are used to show how GAs can simplify the digitalization process and big data interpretation.

The principle of customization is based on the concept of modularity, which consists in the repetition of a module without changing size or shape of the single element. Therefore, this concept expands with introduction of smaller sub-modules to obtain the so called ``complex modularity''. According to this research framework our paper focuses on a customization system for designing an ergonomic bench that can be adaptable to different people (kids, adults, elders) and different use, sitting, semi-sitting and lying position. Our goal is to design a parametric ``configurator'', able to modify modules shape in relation to ergonomics specific needs and to combine them in relation to a specific context.

I siti ex-estrattivi rappresentano una delle maggiori sfide per le politiche di rigenerazione territoriale in Europa e nel mondo, definiti spesso, nelle loro connotazioni spazio-tipologiche, con accezioni che ne lasciano generalmente intendere qualità negative quali epi-sodici spazi frammentari e, talvolta, degradati, non evidenziando il loro valore di ‘paesaggi culturali’. Nonostante un preliminare e non esaustivo contesto normativo di riferimento nazionale e regionale, il tema della valorizzazione di tali ambiti necessita di maggiore attenzione da parte della comunità scientifica, soprattutto nel rispetto dell’attuale scenario internazionale. Nello specifico, per la sua numerosa concentrazione di aree estrattive, peculiare attenzione merita la realtà territoriale della regione Campania, con la messa a punto di un sistema informativo aperto da cui desumere una rappresentazione sinottica dello stato di fatto che integri l’identità storico-culturale con la dimensione figurativa e percettiva dei luoghi. Mining sites represent one of the greatest challenges for territorial regeneration policies in Europe and in the world, often defined, in their spatial-typological connotations, with meanings that generally suggest negative qualities such as episodic fragmented and, at times, degraded spaces, not highlighting their value as ‘cultural landscapes’. Despite a preliminary and non-exhaustive national and regional regulatory framework, the issue of enhancing these areas needs greater attention from the scientific community, especially in respect of the current international scenario. Specifically, due to its numerous concentration of mining areas, the territorial reality of the Campania region deserves particular attention, with the development of an open information system from which to derive a synoptic representation of the state of affairs that integrates the historical-cultural identity with the figurative and perceptive dimension of places.

This chapter shows some results of academic research and didactic activities about innovative design and productive processes based on modeling and digital fabrication integrated strategies. The results of these experiments are customizable lamps prototypes. Digital modeling is based on algorithmic-generative visual scripting approach and geometric theories to manage primitive or complex shapes and patterns to optimize digital manufacturing. The following paragraphs and sub-paragraphs describe a prototypes collection designed, manufactured, and assembled by students on their first experience in VPL and digital prototyping. Lamp prototypes are made using additive and subtractive techniques according to different shaping approaches. The main goal of this academic approach is to collaborate in design and architectural geometry research field: the main goal is to support training and entrepreneurial activities of students aimed at management of complex data systems according to new potential of digital tools for advanced shaping, new manufacturing processes, and ecological strategies.

Il contributo analizza, interpreta e restituisce due casi studio emblematici appartenenti al patrimonio storico-architettonico, parte di un gruppo di cinque architetture geograficamente e temporalmente contestualizzate nella ‘Napoli tra le due Guerre’, classificate secondo cinque categorie: edifici non realizzati, ricostruiti, trasformati, demoliti e inaccessibili. L’analisi critica delle fonti disponibili ha consentito la costruzione di modelli 3D finalizzati a sperimentare sistemi di rappresentazione e di fruizione interattiva (VR) simulando un viaggio nel tempo. Obiettivo del contributo è quello di mettere a confronto metodi, tecniche e tecnologie, consolidati e sperimentali, per individuare nuove possibili applicazioni nel campo della ‘gamification’ applicata al patrimonio storico architettonico realizzato e di progetto.

L’utilizzo delle tecnologie digitali per la documentazione e la valorizzazione dei Beni Culturali ha avuto un forte impulso nell’ultimo decennio soprattutto per l’ampia diffusione di strumenti per la modella- zione e la realizzazione di immagini immersive e dei dispositivi che consentono la fruizione interattiva a distanza attraverso l’utilizzo della rete. Sempre più numerose sono le sperimentazioni di sistemi integrati multimediali di realtà virtuale, applicazioni immersive, realtà aumentata, Serious Games, etc. che hanno come obiettivo la digitalizzazione eo la ricostruzione virtuale, di manufatti e contesti, e la definizione di strategie in grado di coinvolgere gli utenti stimolando comportamenti attivi. Il contributo si colloca in questo ambito e mostra gli avanzamenti di una ricerca in progress finalizzata allo sviluppo di artefatti cognitivi interattivi web-based, fruibili in situ e/o in remoto, con l’obiettivo di trasferire contenuti culturali e stimolare la fruizione partecipata del patrimonio utilizzando modalità ‘pseudo-ludiche’ (gamification). A scopo esemplificativo, si riportano alcune applicazioni realizzate per la Torre del Partito Nazionale Fascista di Luigi Cosenza (progetto mai realizzato) e per l’Arena Flegrea di Giulio De Luca (edificio demolito e ricostruito), che hanno consentito di affrontare tematiche relative alle diverse possibili esigenze comunicative, di valutare le potenzialità degli strumenti e di sperimentarne la flessibilità.

Starting from funicular models, chain models and hanging membranes, the role of 3D physical models in optimized shape research is the basis of form-finding strategies. Advances in structural optimized shape design derive from the wide spread of special digital form-finding tools. The goal of this paper is to test and evaluate interdisciplinary approaches based on computational tools useful in the form finding of efficient structural systems. This work is aimed at designing an inverse hanging shape subdivided into polygonal voussoirs (Voronoi patterns) by relaxing a planar discrete and elastic system, loaded at each point and anchored along its boundary. The workflow involves shaping, discretization (from pre-shaped paneling to digital stereotomy) and structural analysis carried out using two modeling approaches, finite element and rigid block modeling, using an in-house software tool, LiABlock_3D (MATLAB®), to check the stress state and to evaluate the equilibrium stability of the final shell.

The contribution is part of an interdisciplinary research that aims to address the problems of knowledge, interpretation and documentation of vulnerable structures such as the brick Renaissance domes in Campania (XV-XVI century). The goal is to analyze the relationship between Survey, Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) and 3D parametric models based on geometric rules from Treaties to study and to manage Cultural Heritage. HBIM is generally based on scan-to-BIM process that allows to generate 3D model from point cloud. The reverse modeling process, from a point cloud to parametric geometric model, poses a series of issues at the center of cultural debate that currently takes place around HBIM. The experimentation underway is part of this research field with the aim of using the parametric approach as a tool able to introduce an additional methodology for big data interpretation. Currently we can identify two different approaches for the construction of a HBIM system: building a simplified model by identifying the shape grammar or building the geometric components from survey without using pre-compiled objects libraries, following the scan to BIM logic. In our research we are going to identify an "hybrid" methodology. Generally the process is based on the knowledge and critical abilities of individual scholars, the idea is to increase the efficiency of the system through collaborative workflow forms that allow to optimize the processes through effective knowledge management actions. We are going to use procedural modeling techniques to generate HBIM domes library.

I disturbi ASD sono sindromi neuro comportamentali complessi; viaggiare, stare in posti affollati, fare una visita medica, approcciare un coetaneo, andare all’Università, sono solo alcuni esempi che possono generare condizioni di ansia e che, spesso, dis_connettono il soggetto dalla vita reale. L’obiettivo della ricerca è quello di sperimentare l’utilizzo di tecnologie innovative per favorire gli scambi relazionali e funzionali tra persone con autismo e persone neuro tipiche, per favorire l’autonomia individuale delle persone con autismo, nella gestione del quotidiano e nella comunicazione sociale, soprattutto nell’età evolutiva e adulta. Nell’ambito di un progetto di ricerca è in corso di sperimentazione la realizzazione di un’app che sarà realizzata da un team multidisciplinare composto da esperti, neuropsichiatri, psicologi clinici, informatici e architetti. L’app simula spazi e situazioni, ‘semplifica’ la visualizzazione degli ambienti e ‘personalizza’, con diversi livelli di complessità e interattività, adattandosi ad utenti con differenti livelli di abilità intellettiva e linguistica. Nell’ambito delle nostre specifiche competenze sono oggetto di studio le diverse modalità di semplificazione dello spazio simulato e le diverse modalità di interazione, dal semplice video (livello 0), alle panoramiche 360° (livelli 1 e 2), fino alla sperimentazione dell’utilizzo della VR e l’utilizzo di wearable technology.

Geometric understanding allows us to solve many problems in manufacturing complex surfaces and geometric rules can lead the project from theory to practice (Pottmann in Architectural geometry. Kindle edn, 2015). Digital fabrication technologies are evolving and becoming more and more widespread. Knowledge of fabrication methods available and parametric design tools, based on geometry, are changing the designer way to think. Advances in this field promote experimental use of new materials but also innovative use of traditional materials, such as wood. Our research in the field of non-developable surfaces fabrication move from “paneling” to “kerfing”, or “kerf bending”. This subtractive manufacturing technique consists in transforming a rigid material in a flexible one and the problem to solve is how to cut the flat shape to obtain the 3D design surface. This is a quite simple question to solve for a developable surface, but it is a very complex problems for a double curvature surface manufacturing. The aims of our research are: analyzing the relationship between the curvature of surfaces and kerfing techniques; testing different ways to optimize the design of cutting patterns to bend a rigid materials; testing different ways to manufacture 3D surface from 2D panel. We are manufacturing some prototypes that are made up of pieces of developable helicoid and hyperbolic paraboloid.

Contemporary architecture is considered a dynamic system, capable of adapting to different needs, from environmental to functional ones. The term 'Adaptable Architecture' describes an architecture from which specific components can be changed in relation to external stimuli. This change could be executed by the building system itself, transformed manually or it could be any other ability to be transformed by external forces (Leliveld et al.2017). Adaptability concept is therefore linked to motion and to recent advances in kinetic architecture. In our research we are studying the rules that we can use to design a kinetic architecture using origami. Parametric design allows us to digitally simulate the movement of origami structures, we are testing algorithmic modeling to generate doubly curvature surfaces starting from a designed surface and not from the process. Our main goal is to study the relationship between geometry, motion and shape. We are interested, in particular, in complex surface manufacture using origami technique to design a kinetic and reactive ceiling.

The complexity of contemporary forms can be investigated from different points of view. The technological aspect is very important because it is closely linked to the current tools of computational design and digital fabrication, now based on the logic of visual scripting and, therefore, more accessible to a wide range of users. From the past to the present, the architect is called to deepen the basic theoretical contents of the creation and communication of architecture and to optimize the problems that affect the feasibility of the architecture, developing and disseminating new solutions in the professional field as in teaching and research fields. More specifically, in a Ph.D. thesis research developed in the of Ph.D. course of study in Architectural Techonology and Architectural and Environmental Representation at the DiArc—Department of Architecture, University Federico II, Naples (Italy), the topic of the discretization and paneling of complex surfaces was developed to systematize the basic and advanced principles that are capable of supporting the elaboration of possible solutions and innovative approaches to this constructive, economic and aesthetic problem. Concretely, thanks to the collaboration developed during a workshop sponsored by the research center Medaarch—Mediterranean Academy of Architecture—Mediterranean FabLab (Cava de’ Tirreni, Salerno, Italy), the object of the experiment was the physical construction of a pavilion standing discretized in planar hexagonal panels. Therefore, this experience demonstrates how the cooperation between academia, research centers and specialized local companies throughout the territory is important because it allows to strengthen and integrate the expertise of all those involved and encourages the development of multidisciplinary approaches. So, this experience is the stimulus and the outcome of a specific search path developed by the Ph.D. thesis research, as well as an important opportunity to realize the content of current advanced research conducted within the research field of Architectural Geometry, with important consequences in Sciences of Representation’s disciplinary field and, more specifically, of the Applications of Descriptive Geometry. In addition, these experiences represent an important source of inspiration useful to start an innovative and challenging educational offer, organizing equipped laboratories inside universities and specific first level courses. Therefore, to demonstrate and deepen these reflections, it is interesting to show results, theoretical and practical, of the research experience and teaching reflections between theory and practice.

Gli attuali strumenti dell’ICT (Infomation and Communication Technology) per la digitalizzazione del patrimonio costruito, offrono notevoli opportunità utili alla conoscenza e alla comunicazione dello stesso e delle sue specificità. La trasposizione della realtà in ambiente digitale, attraverso la costruzione di modelli mimetici, oltre che metricamente coerenti, consente di indagarla e rappresentarla secondo più punti di vista e con diversi livelli di approfondimento. L'ambiente digitale, infatti, permette di elaborare immagini con la possibilità di derivare informazioni che molto spesso vanno oltre la realtà, rendendo visibili aspetti non immediatamente percepibili nella fruizione diretta. Il presente contributo fa riferimento alle metodologie ed alle procedure legate all’utilizzo di tecnologie di ultima generazione per l'acquisizione dei dati, al fine di realizzare sistemi di comunicazione digitale che, sfruttando l'immediatezza e la sintesi del dato visivo, siano in grado di fornire dati informativi di diversa natura sulla conoscenza del bene. In particolare, si intende presentare un'esperienza di ricerca condotta sul patrimonio architettonico della città di Napoli finalizzata alla realizzazione di un progetto di conoscenza e di comunicazione delle chiese a pianta ovata con riferimento ad alcuni campioni esemplificativi. Le operazioni di rilievo, basate su tecnologie no-contact, e di analisi della documentazione esistente, hanno consentito di rinvenire la configurazione spaziale dei temi di studio e di individuarne e verificarne le matrici geometriche. La nuvola di punti, ottenuta mediante rilievi image-based e range-based, è stata opportunamente processata ed elaborata per un’adeguata gestione dei file nelle fasi di restituzione del dato rilevato. Queste operazioni hanno consentito di visualizzare la nuvola secondo differenti layout, dando luogo a modelli informativi omologohi al reale. Nella reinterpretazione dei dati è stata operata una modellazione in ambiente BIM (Building Information Modeling), conformando un modello Heritage- BIM, al cui interno sono confluite tutte le informazioni inerenti il manufatto e predisponendo un sistema info-grafico fondamentale per la rappresentazione e la comunicazione del dato reale. La versatilità del modello H-BIM ha consentito di rielaborare le informazioni rispetto agli obiettivi e alle finalità della comunicazione, oltre che al target di utenti. Sulla base di tale rielaborazione, integrata con rilievi fotografici ed opportuni approfondimente, è possibile fruire ed esplorare virtualmente lo spazio, indagandone le specificità attraverso la consultazione di un archivio digitale interattivo.
