Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical product that is widely used as a plastic precursor. It acts directly on the kidney mitochondria, causing renal dysfunction. N-acetylcysteine is effective in protecting the kidneys from chemical-induced damage. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. The aim of this study is to further evaluate and compare NAC and vitamin E to oppose the nephrotoxicity caused by BPA.Forty-two adult male rats were divided into 7 groups: control, BPA, NAC, vitamin E, BPA plus NAC, BPA plus vitamin E, and combined BPA, NAC and vitamin E. BPA, NAC, vitamin E were given orally at doses of 50 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, and 1000 mg/kg respectively, for 5 weeks.NAC and vitamin E groups showed improved kidney function tests and alleviated BPA-induced oxidative stress; increased GSH and decreased MDA, NO and iNOS levels. NAC and vitamin E significantly attenuated inflammation; decreased NF-κB and increased IL-4, and Nrf2, in addition there was alleviation of renal histopathology. To some extent, vitamin E administration showed significant improvement. Moreover, combined NAC and vitamin E treatment showed more significance than either NAC or vitamin E separate groups.This study determined the substantial protective effects of NAC and/or vitamin E in BPA-induced nephrotoxicity through modulation of Nrf2 with subsequent improvement of oxidative stress and inflammation. The alleviation was more significant in combined NAC and vitamin E treatment mainly through their synergistic effect on Nrf2.

The study was carried out to determine antibacterial resistance profiles of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates from clinical samples of patients during the duration, from January 2019 to July 2020 in five governmental and private medical laboratories of Aden governorate, Yemen. A total of 267 MRSA isolates were tested with a disc diffusion method from 4 clinical specimens. The isolates were examined for methicillin resistance using vancomycin, erythromycin, amikacin, and gentamicin. The results revealed a large number of MRSA isolates showed resistance to erythromycin (43.5%) and Vancomycin (28%). A lower number of MRSA isolates showed resistance to amikacin (6.25%), gentamicin (11.75%). A majority of MRSA isolates were from urine specimen (162) followed by (56) wounds, (34) pus, and (25) semen specimens. The highest proportion of MRSA isolates were obtained from Al-medina medical laboratory (31%) and Alborg laboratory (24%).

Treating drug-resistant cancer cells is a clinical challenge and it is also vital to screen for new cancer drugs. Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell clonal cancer that, despite many experimental therapeutics, remains incurable. In this study, two MM cell line lines U266 and RPMI 8226 were used to determine the impact of camel whey protein (CWP). The CWP IC50 was calculated by MTT examination, while the flow cytometry analysis was used to investigate the chemotaxis responses of MM cells in relation to CXCL12 and the pro-apoptotic effect of CHP. MM cells were treated with CWP and Western blot analysis was used to determine the underlying molecular mechanisms. Dose and time based on the impact of CWP on the cell viability of MM cells with IC50 of 50 μg/ml, without affecting the viability of normal healthy PBMCs. CWP reduced chemotaxis of MM cells significantly from the CXC chemokine ligand 12 (CXCL12). Using Western blot analysis, we found that CWP decreased the activation of AKT, mTOR, PLCβ3, NFαB and ERK, which was mechanistically mediated by CXCL12/CXCR4. In both U266 and RPMI 8226, CWP induced apoptosis by upregulating cytochrome C expression. In addition, CWP mediated the growth arrest of MM cells by robustly decreasing the expression of the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family members Bcl-2, Bcl-XL and Mcl-1. Conversely, the expression of pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 family members Bak, Bax and Bim was increased after treatment with CWP. Our data indicates CWP's therapeutic potential for MM cells.

During march – May 2020, chikungunya (CHIK), an arboviral infection, has spread throughout the all area of Aden and Lahj governorate, infecting thousands of people.The study investigated haematological parameters and Clinical features of CHIK virus infected patients attending outpatient clinic at Al-shafa and Algamaheer medical center, Aden and Lahj, Yemen. 50 selected patients within the age of 14- 60 years were involved in the study according to the clinical features. The most common feature of the CHIKV infection was arthralgia and high fever. Other clinical manifestations reported as, headache, joint pain, redness of joints , swelling of joints vomiting and Fatigue Blood samples were collected and analyzed using Sysmex automated haematology analyzer for CBC test.Results showed the emergence of lymphopenia (15.7 ± 6.18%) , neutrophils (73.8 ± 6.98%) and the complete white blood cell (WBC) counts was 4.8 ± 1.4 103/μL in patients. The platelets (PLT) counts ranged from 92-244 103/μL (mean: 160 ± 47.4x103/μL). The hemoglobin decreased in 30 % of cases and was about (10 ± 1.2 g/dl) in children. By day 5 of illness the neutrophil and lymphocyte count had recovered to normal range, but the arthralgia and joint pain was continued for weeks. In addition of Clinical features, the neutrophils and lymphopenia was the main hematological indices of CHIK, in lack of CHIK antigen detection

Propolis has several biological/pharmacological properties. The current study investigated the potential hepatoprotective benefits of propolis in CCl4-treated mice. Three groups of male BALB/c mice (n=15/group) were used in the current study: group I comprised the control mice, groups II was intraperitoneally injected with CCl4 (1.0 mL of 10% CCl4dissolved in olive oil/kg body weight, twice/week for six weeks) for inducing liver fibrosis, group III was treated with CCl4 as in group II and then supplemented orally with the ethanol-soluble derivative of propolis (100 mg/kg body weight/day) for additional four weeks. The antifibrotic effects of propolis were assessed by histological analysis, Western blotting, flow cytometry, and ELISA. The results indicated that the CCl4-treated mice exhibited histopathological alterations in the liver architecture with an increase in the numbers of Kupffer cells, a significant increase in the lymphocytes apoptosis and in the plasma nitric oxide, reactive oxygen species, C-reactive protein, and platelet derived growth factor levels, and a significant decrease in the plasma total glutathione level, as compared with the control group. The liver of CCl4-treated mice also exhibited a significant increase in the expression of collagen and survivin, upregulation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) phosphorylation, and downregulation of STAT5 phosphorylation. Interestingly, propolis abrogated significantly the hepatic collagen deposition, inflammatory signals, and oxidative stress, and improved the hepatic architecture in CCl4-treated mice nearly to the normal architecture observed in the control mice. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate the potential hepatoprotective effects of propolis in alleviating the liver fibrosis.

Background/aims Propolis is one of the most promising natural products, exhibiting not only therapeutic but also prophylactic actions. Propolis has several biological and pharmacological properties, including hepatoprotective activities. The present study aimed to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms of propolis against CCl4-mediated liver fibrosis. Methods Three groups of male BALB/c mice (n=15/ group) were used: group 1 comprised control mice; groups 2 and 3 were injected with CCl4 for the induction of liver fibrosis. Group 3 was then orally supplemented with propolis (100 mg/kg body weight) for four weeks. Different techniques were used to monitor the antifibrotic effects of propolis, including histopathological investigations using HE Western blotting; flow cytometry; and ELISA. Results We found that the induction of liver fibrosis by CCl4 was associated with a significant increase in hepatic collagen and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) expression. Moreover, CCl4-treated mice also exhibited histopathological alterations in the liver architecture. Additionally, the liver of CCl4-treated mice exhibited a marked increase in proinflammatory signals, such as increased expression of HSP70 and increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines and ROS. Mechanistically, the liver of CCl4-treated mice exhibited a significant increase in the phosphorylation of AKT and mTOR; upregulation of the expression of BAX and cytochrome C; downregulation of the expression of Bcl2; a significant elevation in the levels of TGF-β followed by increased phosphorylation of SMAD2; and a marked increase in the expression of P53 and iNOS. Interestingly, oral supplementation of CCl4-treated mice with propolis significantly abolished hepatic collagen deposition, abrogated inflammatory signals and oxidative stress, restored CCl4-mediated alterations in the signaling cascades, and hence repaired the hepatic architecture nearly to the normal architecture observed in the control mice. Conclusion Our findings revealed the therapeutic potential and the underlying mechanisms of propolis against liver fibrosis.

Background: The nursing discipline is growing, and higher education in nursing aims to prepare students to develop their capabilities to become independent professionals with a lifelong learning, enabling them to adapt their knowledge in relation to advances in both nursing theory and practice. Today learning is the essential issue in training and strong lever in dealing with the social challenges considered the product of learning and enhancing knowledge and skills. So one of the important and effective factors of the learning is the learning style. Learning styles are not individual’s abilities but the preference of a person in receiving information. Understanding students’ learning styles is important because if educational materials and teaching styles are in line with learning styles, this can enhance learning and promote academic achievement. Aims: The present study aims to determine bachelor nursing students’ learning styles and its relation to their learning and academic achievement. Design: The study used descriptive correctional study. Methods: The study was conducted at Faculty of Nursing at King Khalid University, Saudi Arabia. All nursing students, enrolled in the Faculty of Nursing from three levels of academic year, fourth, sixth, and eighth at the time of the study of the academic year 2018-2019 were included in the study (n= 117). Three tools were used for data collection namely; Learning Style Questionnaire (LSQ), The Revised two-factor Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F) and Retrospective Audit. Results: Based on the study findings of this study, it could be found that there was no significant relationship between overall learning style and approach of learning with nursing students’ achievement. While a significant relationship was proved between nursing student active/reflective learning style and nursing student achievement. The majority of the undergraduate nursing students at Faculty of Nursing, King Khalid University regards of their academic year showed Visual/Verbalis the most prefer learning style. Conclusions: It was concluded that learning is enhanced when active learning style and most nursing students preferred visual/verbal learning style. It is recommended to the developed further studies in other faculties of nursing in Saudi Arabia.

Purpose: This study was designed to demonstrate potential neuroprotective and autophagic activity of exenatide in rodent AD model. Experimental Approach: Thirty adult Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into 3 groups (10 rats each); Group 1; control normal group, Group 2; AD pathological group, Group 3; exenatide treated group. All drugs were given intraperitoneal (IP) for 42 days. Behavioral changes using Morris water maze test has been evaluated, gene expressions of beclin-1 and the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in the hippocampus were assessed. Examination of hippocampal tissue using hematoxylin & eosin (H&E) stain and ultrastructural analyses were also done. Data were analyzed by using the statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS). Key Results: Exenatide alleviated both behavioral and pathological changes compared to pathological group. Exenatide treated group was found to improve autophagic activity by increasing beclin-1 and decreasing mTOR gene expression. Exenatide treatment significantly prevented hippocampal neuronal degeneration demonstrated by H&E. Moreover, accumulation of autophagic vacuoles in ultrastructure study of hippocampus, alleviated in exenatide group compared to pathological group indicating enhanced autophagic activity by exenatide. Conclusion and Implications: The results of the present study clearly indicated exenatide might have beneficial effects on impaired cognitive performance and hippocampal neuronal viability in AD by increasing autophagic activity. Increased beclin-1 seems to be the initiating player in this disease modifying effect and this supports the assumption of a disease modifying activity of exenatide through the autophagic activity.
