Higher wave heights and currents can greatly increase erosion rates. If the coastal region is exposed to long‐term erosion without protective measures, the coastline will irreversibly retreat landwards and endanger coastal assets. One of the solutions is to make use of the natural coastal vegetation, which can both stabilise the soil and contribute to wave attenuation. One of the most important plants for ecosystem services is the Elymus due to its ability to stabilise upper salt marshes and prevent erosion. In order to better predict the fluid‐plant interaction and wave attenuation by vegetation, an experimental characterization has been carried out on Elymus species in this study to determine the bending flexibility and material stiffness of the plants. For this purpose, three‐point and two‐point bending tests were performed on different sections of Elymus collected in March, Jun and September to investigate the seasonal changes in the tissue‐related mechanical behaviour. Based on the structural properties obtained from histological studies of the cross‐sections, the non‐linear material behaviour of Elymus was unravelled from the experimentally measured bending behaviour using the inverse finite element method. The results of these experiments revealed some surprising differences in the flexibility of the stems at different seasons. Furthermore, by comparing the data from the tissue samples and the simulations, valuable insight is gained into how the morphology and mechanical behaviour of plants change throughout the year. The experimental and numerical results obtained will help to predict how plants interact with the fluid and how wave attenuation relates to different vegetation conditions, for example, plant density, stiffness and dimensions. Epichloë fungal endophytes hold promise in sustainable agriculture by fortifying cool-season grasses such as Elymus spp. against various stresses. Elymus spp. are widely distributed in Northwest China with a high incidence of endophyte infections. In this study, we identified 20 Epichloë endophytic fungal strains carried by five Elymus spp. from five areas of Northwest China and systematically characterized their morphology, molecular phylogeny, mating type, and alkaloid diversity for the first time. The morphological characterization underscores strain diversity, with variable colony textures and growth rates. A phylogenetic analysis confirms all strains are E. bromicola, emphasizing their taxonomic status. Alkaloid-encoding gene profiling delineates distinct alkaloid synthesis capabilities among the strains, which are crucial for host adaptability and resistance. A mating-type analysis reveals uniformity (mtAC) across the Epichloë strains, simplifying breeding strategies. Notably, the Epichloë strains exhibit diverse alkaloid synthesis gene profiles, impacting host interactions. We represent a comparative analysis of GBSS1 gene fragment sequences for a number of species related to Elymus caninus: Elymus prokudinii, Elymus viridiglumis, Elymus goloskokovii, as well as a number of morphologically deviating biotypes, inhabiting Russia and Kazakhstan. Microevolutionary relationships between species were assessed from dendrograms derived from sequences of exons and introns. In all taxa, the St subgenome was represented by St2 variants, rather typical of the North American ancestral line of Pseudoroegneria spicata than of the Asian line descending from Pseudoroegneria strigosa. All putative relatives of E. caninus had H1 subgenome variants linked around the Asian diploid carrier of the H genome from Hordeum jubatum and were divided into two subclades. One of them (H1‐1) contained most of the closely related E. caninus clones, including Elymus uralensis. Another subclade (H1‐2) consisted of five variants phylogenetically related to Elymus mutabilis. We have also studied reproductive relationships between species E. goloskokovii, E. prokudinii, and E. viridiglumis and the degree of their integration into the E. caninus complex. Biotypes included in sexual hybridization formed a single recombination gene pool, within which slight differences in reproductive compatibility were observed. A comprehensive study of microevolutionary differentiation of taxa showed the expediency of taxonomic revision. A hybridological study of biotypes of species close to Elymus caninus: E. prokudinii, E. viridiglumis, E. goloskokovii, as well as a number of morphologically deviant biotypes in Russia and Kazakhstan, was carried out. The objectives were to study the levels of reproductive relationships and the degree of integration of the species E. goloskokovii, E. prokudinii, and E. viridiglumis into the E. caninus complex. Our estimates of the seed fertility of natural parental biotypes were within 60–90 %. Among the combinations of crossing in F1, the highest seed setting was found in the hybrids formed by parental pairs from close habitats, regardless of the taxonomic rank of biotypes. The highest fertility values (55.6 and 46.1 %) were found in combinations involving E. caninus, E. viridiglumis and E. goloskokovii. It has been concluded that the biotypes of these species included in sexual hybridization form a single recombination gene pool, within which slight differences in reproductive compatibility are observed. The nature of the inheritance of the diagnostic features of lemmas“presence of trichomes” and“length of awns”, according to the digenic and monogenic type, respectively, is shown. The high seed fertility of the created hybrids and the presence of intermediate forms in the F2 generation according to distinctive features indicate the possibility of interspecific introgression when species grow together in natural populations. Thus, the assessment of the inheritance of diagnostic characters makes it possible to classify E. goloskokovii, E. prokudinii, and E. viridiglumis as intraspecific taxa of E. caninus s. l. Data were obtained on the morphological and reproductive properties of interspecific hybrids with the participation of the species E. mutabilis as a possible donor in the speciation of taxa close to E. caninus. In cross combinations of E. caninus × E. mutabilis and E. mutabilis × E. caninus, lower values of seed fertility of hybrids in the F1 and F2 generations were noted compared to hybrids between the species E. caninus, E. goloskokovii, E. prokudinii and E. viridiglumis. Nevertheless, on the basis of chorological and morphological criteria, we concluded that E. caninus and E. mutabilis are independent species.

• Elymus scabrifolius reproduces sexually and its embryo sacs are of Polygonum type. • This species has a mixed and mainly autogamous reproductive system. • Self-pollination occurs between the florets of the same inflorescence, or between the inflorescences of the same plant by geitonogamy. • All the evaluated populations have high fertility rate. Elymus scabrifolius is a perennial forage species valued as a plant genetic resource for degraded areas and for crop improvement, being a source of salt-tolerant related genes. In this study, we determined the breeding system of this species by analyzing seed set under different pollination treatments, phenology, floral traits, and embryological development in four Argentine populations. The results indicate that E. scabrifolius has a mixed, sexual, and mainly autogamous reproductive system. Plants from all populations produced high seed percentages, with significant differences among them. Self-pollination occurred fundamentally between the chasmogamous florets of the same plant by geitonogamy. This mode of selfing results from the flowering synchrony and the architecture of inflorescences. Self-pollination by cleistogamy had low rates and was observed in only two populations. This information may be useful to estimate the potential utility of this species as a phytogenetic resource, and to design efficient collection and conservation programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Roegneria yenchiana sp. nov. (Triticeae) is a new species collected from Shangri‐la of Yunnan Province in China based on morphological, cytological, and molecular data. It is morphologically characterized by one spikelet per node, rectangular glums, awns flanked by two short mucros in lemmas, distinguished from other species of Roegneria. The genomic in situ hybridization results indicate that R. yenchiana is an allotetraploid, and its genomic constitution is StY. Phylogenetic analyses based on multiple loci suggested that R. yenchiana is closely related to Pseudoroegneria and Roegneria, and the Pseudoroegneria served as the maternal donors during its polyploid speciation. In a greenhouse experiment, the effects of soil microorganisms and extracts of Achnatherum inebrians on the seed germination and seedling growth of Elymus nutans were studied. The results showed that both the extracts from aboveground and belowground parts of A. inebrians significantly inhibited the germination rate, germination potential, germination index, vigor index, seedling height, root length, and fresh weight of E. nutans, but increased malondialdehyde content, catalase, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activity of E. nutans seedlings (p < 0.05). The allelopathy of aqueous extracts of the aboveground parts of A. inebrians was stronger than that of the precipitates. Aqueous extracts of the aboveground parts of A. inebrians decreased seed germination rate, germination potential, germination index, vigor index, seedling length, root length, and seedling fresh weight by 10.45%-74.63%, 24.18%-32.50%, 19.03%-73.36%, 37.83%-88.41%, 21.42%-53.14%, 2.65%-40.21%, and 20.45%-61.36%, respectively, and malondialdehyde content, peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase activity increased by 8.09%-62.24%, 27.83%-86.47%, 22.90%-93.17%, and 11.15%-75.91%, respectively. The above indexes were higher in live soil than in sterilized soil. Soil microorganisms increased the allelopathy of A. inebrians. The seed germination rate, germination potential, germination index, vigor index, seedling length, and seedling fresh weight of E. nutans planted in live soil decreased by 8.22%-48.48%, 10.00%-51.85%, 8.19%-53.26%, 16.43%-60.03%, 12.91%-28.81%, and 9.09%-22.86% compared with sterilized soil, respectively. Malondialdehyde content, peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase activity of E. nutans planted in live soil increased by 53.91%-81.06%, 15.71%-57.34%, 33.33%-86.31%, and 9.78%-52.51% compared with sterilized soil, respectively. The existence of soil microorganisms enhanced the allelopathy of the secondary metabolites of A. inebrians. A combination of microorganisms and aqueous extracts from the aboveground parts of A. inebrians had the strongest allelopathic effect on E. nutans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The system of the family Poaceae is dynamically changing due to the progress of phylogenetic research. Consequently, nomenclature of some taxa should be adjusted accordingly. In the Plants of the World Online (POWO) and some other authoritative online sources, some genera and nothogenera are accepted in rather wide circumscriptions; for example, ×Agroelymus E.G. Camus ex A. Camus (including ×Agrotrigia Tzvelev and ×Elymopyrum Cugnac), ×Elyleymus B.R. Baum (with synonyms ×Leymotrigia Tzvelev and ×Leymotrix Kharkev. & Prob.), and Elymus L. (including Elytrigia Desv. and ×Elymotrigia Hyl.). However, Pseudoroegneria (Nevski) Á. Löve and Kengyilia C. Yen & J.L. Yang are now commonly recognized as separate genera. If we accept these taxonomic concepts, several nomenclatural combinations are needed. Thus, some of them are proposed here. I propose a new nothogenus ×Kengdoroegneria Olshanskyi for intergeneric hybrids between species of Kengyilia C. Yen & J.L. Yang and Pseudoroegneria (Nevski) Á. Löve. Also, nine nomenclatural combinations in ×Agroelymus, ×Elyleymus, Elymus, and ×Kengdoroegneria are validated.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization is a powerful tool that enables plant researchers to perform systematic, evolutionary, and population studies of wheat wild relatives as well as to characterize alien introgression into the wheat genome. This retrospective review reflects on progress made in the development of methods for creating new chromosomal markers since the launch of this cytogenetic satellite instrument to the present day. DNA probes based on satellite repeats have been widely used for chromosome analysis, especially for "classical" wheat probes (pSc119.2 and Afa family) and "universal" repeats (45S rDNA, 5S rDNA, and microsatellites). The rapid development of new-generation sequencing and bioinformatical tools, and the application of oligo- and multioligonucleotides has resulted in an explosion in the discovery of new genome- and chromosome-specific chromosome markers. Owing to modern technologies, new chromosomal markers are appearing at an unprecedented velocity. The present review describes the specifics of localization when employing commonly used vs. newly developed probes for chromosomes in J, E, V, St, Y, and P genomes and their diploid and polyploid carriers Agropyron, Dasypyrum, Thinopyrum, Pseudoroegneria, Elymus, Roegneria, and Kengyilia. Particular attention is paid to the specificity of probes, which determines their applicability for the detection of alien introgression to enhance the genetic diversity of wheat through wide hybridization. The information from the reviewed articles is summarized into the TRepeT database, which may be useful for studying the cytogenetics of Triticeae. The review describes the trends in the development of technology used in establishing chromosomal markers that can be used for prediction and foresight in the field of molecular biology and in methods of cytogenetic analysis. Background and objectives The germination and establishment of plants resistant to drought is one of the most important and effective aspects of rangeland improvement. Investigating changes in rangeland species' morphological and physiological characteristics under different pretreatments under laboratory, greenhouse, and field conditions is necessary. As a result, elite and promising species can be selected, and improvement efforts can be evaluated favorably. Methodology This study investigated the effect of different pretreatments on the germination and establishment of Sanguisorba minor and Elymus hispidus under drought stress. In this regard, the effect of priming treatments with distilled water, polyethylene glycol, potassium nitrate, and silver nanoparticles was studied to improve germination characteristics and establishment of species under agricultural capacity. The experiment was conducted as a factorial in a randomized complete block design in four replications. To conduct the research, 168 pots were used, and ten seeds were planted in each pot. The measured attributes included the percentage and velocity of seedling appearance from the soil, establishment and survival, length and weight of root and stem, vigor, proline, carotenoid, soluble sugar, total chlorophyll, catalase, and superoxide dismutase enzymes. After sampling the studied traits in the greenhouse and obtaining the results in the laboratory, variance and data analysis in SPSS software. A comparison of mean data with Duncan's multiple range tests at a 5% level for the studied traits was performed on both species. Results The results showed that drought stress significantly differs in characteristics, such as the dry weight of aerial parts or the length of plant roots. The mutual effects of priming and stress were significant on the traits of emergence from the soil, speed of emergence, establishment, survival, and dry weight of aerial parts. Still, it affected several other traits as well. The application of silver nanoparticles had positive or negative effects on seeds' vegetative characteristics, and seedlings grown from the seeds of the studied plants did not show significant changes to characteristics such as plant root length under different priming treatments at a specific moisture level. Some characteristics, including ability, had significant changes due to humidity levels varying up to 20 percent. The positive effects of polyethylene treatment and the negative effects of high nanoparticle concentration were evident. Applying polyethylene glycol and potassium nitrate in E. hispidus and polyethylene glycol and silver nanoparticles at a concentration of 30 mg/l in S. minor showed the highest positive effects on plant resistance under drought stress. Application of silver nanoparticles at concentrations of 60 and 90 mg/L showed negative effects on the vegetative and physiological characteristics of the two studied species. Conclusion drought stress caused negative effects on the structural characteristics of the studied species, and using hydropriming treatments, potassium nitrate, polyethylene glycol, and silver nanoparticles (with a concentration of 30 mg/liter) reduced stress adverse effects. The reason for this is mainly the changes in the physiological factors, such as the amount of proline, catalase, and superoxide dismutase enzymes, and the application of various pretreatments causes positive changes in pretreatment factors and increases the species' drought resistance. The results related to the effect of different pretreatments on the germination of the mentioned species under laboratory and field conditions also confirm this issue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aphids are major pests of cereal and pasture grasses throughout the world, vectoring disease and reducing plant production. There are few control options other than insecticides. Epichloë endophytes that produce loline alkaloids in their hosts provide a possible mechanism of control, with both meadow fescue and tall fescue naturally infected with loline-producing endophytes showing a resistance to Rhopalosiphum padi. We screened Elymus spp. naturally infected with endophytes that produced loline alkaloids at concentrations known to affect aphids on fescue but found no effect on these insects infesting Elymus. A synthetic loline-producing endophyte association with rye also had no effect on the aphids. After hypothesizing that the lolines were being translocated in the xylem in Elymus and rye rather than the phloem, we tested the rye and meadow fescue infected with loline-producing endophytes against a xylem feeding spittlebug. The endophyte in rye inhibited the feeding of the insect and reduced its survival, whereas the endophyte-infected meadow fescue had no effect on the spittlebug but reduced the number of aphids. Lolines applied to the potting medium of endophyte-free and endophyte-infected rye, ryegrass, and tall fescue resulted in a decrease in the aphid populations on the endophyte-free pasture grasses relative to the untreated controls but had no effect on aphid numbers on the rye. We tentatively conclude that lolines, produced in both natural and synthetic association with Elymus and rye, are partitioned in the xylem rather than the phloem, where they are inaccessible to aphids. Elymus breviaristatus, a rare grass species with excellent resistance and ecological importance, is narrowly distributed on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. Populations of E. breviaristatus are declining due to habitat fragmentation, and thus far, characteristics of genetic differentiation and adaptive responses to climate change remain poorly understood in this species. Here, we explored the genetic structure of 18 natural populations (269 individuals) in the transition zone between Tibet and the Hengduan Mountains using 15 expressed sequence tag (EST)-SSR primer pairs and identified possible barriers to gene flow that might have caused genetic discontinuities. Additional analyses were performed to identify the environmental factors affecting genetic diversity and to test whether the patterns of genetic variation among populations were more consistent with the isolation by distance (IBD) or isolation by environment (IBE) model. Multiple measures of genetic diversity revealed that intra-population genetic variation was low, while inter-population genetic variation was high. Clustering, structure, and principal coordinate analyses identified three genetic groups: (a) Eastern Qamdo, (b) Nagqu and Western Qamdo, and (c) Lhasa and Nyingchi. A clear physical barrier to gene flow was formed by the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon and the Tanggula Mountains. We found that both IBD and IBE contributed to the observed patterns of genetic variation, and the IBE model played a leading role. In addition, precipitation-related variables, soil phosphorus content and soil K:P ratio significantly affected population genetic variation. Overall, our results emphasized the genetic fragility of E. breviaristatus populations and showed that this species requires attention, as future climate changes and human activities may further threaten its survival. In addition, the genetic differences among E. breviaristatus populations should be considered when formulating conservation measures for E. breviaristatus populations in the study area.

Elymus scabrifolius es una gramínea perenne nativa de Sudamérica con gran potencial como recurso forrajero para ambientes con limitantes edáficas. En el presente trabajo se analizó la utilización de caracteres morfológicos y marcadores moleculares AFLP para la identificación genotípica de seis accesiones, un cultivar comercial y siete híbridos artificiales de esta especie. Ambos tipos de marcadores permitieron diferenciar a los materiales analizados en los respectivos dendrogramas, aunque las relaciones entre materiales variaron según el tipo de marcador. El Análisis de Componentes Principales permitió identificar las variables más relevantes para la diferenciación morfológica. Los híbridos se diferenciaron morfológicamente de ambos parentales, excepto un híbrido que se agrupó con su material paterno. Aunque en el análisis de los marcadores AFLP los híbridos se agruparon con uno de sus parentales, se pudo corroborar su origen híbrido mediante el registro de bandas paternas y polimórficas entre parentales. Se concluye que las metodologías empleadas para caracterizar los materiales analizados de E. scabrifolius serían de gran utilidad para el manejo eficiente de colecciones de germoplasma como así también para su utilización en programas de mejoramiento genético.

Invasive weeds threaten the biodiversity and forage productivity of grasslands worldwide. However, management of these weeds is constrained by the practical difficulty of detecting small-scale infestations across large landscapes and by limits in understanding of landscape-scale invasion dynamics, including mechanisms that enable patches to expand, contract, or remain stable. While high-end hyperspectral remote sensing systems can effectively map vegetation cover, these systems are currently too costly and limited in availability for most land managers. We demonstrate application of a more accessible and cost-effective remote sensing approach, based on simple aerial imagery, for quantifying weed cover dynamics over time. In California annual grasslands, the target communities of interest include invasive weedy grasses (Aegilops triuncialis and Elymus caput-medusae) and desirable forage grass species (primarily Avena spp. and Bromus spp.). Detecting invasion of annual grasses into an annual-dominated community is particularly challenging, but we were able to consistently characterize these two communities based on their phenological differences in peak growth and senescence using maximum likelihood supervised classification of imagery acquired twice per year (in mid- and end-of season). This approach permitted us to map weed-dominated cover at a 1-m scale (correctly detecting 93% of weed patches across the landscape) and to evaluate weed cover change over time. We found that weed cover was more pervasive and persistent in management units that had no significant grazing for several years than in those that were grazed, whereas forage cover was more abundant and stable in the grazed units. This application demonstrates the power of this method for assessing fine-scale vegetation transitions across heterogeneous landscapes. It thus provides means for small-scale early detection of invasive species and for testing fundamental questions about landscape dynamics.

Genome size variation and hybridization occur frequently within or between plant species under diverse environmental conditions, which enrich species diversification and drive the evolutionary process. Elymus L. is the largest genus in Triticeae with five recognized basic genomes (St, H, P, W, and Y). However, the data on population cytogenetics of Elymus species are sparse, especially whether genome hybridization and chromosomal structure can be affected by altitude are still unknown. In order to explore the relationship between genome sizes, we studied interspecific hybridization and altitude of Elymus species at population genetic and cytological levels. Twenty-seven populations at nine different altitudes (2,800–4,300 m) of three Elymus species, namely, hexaploid E. nutans (StHY, 2n = 6x = 42), tetraploid E. burchan-buddae (StY, 2n = 4x = 28), and E. sibiricus (StH, 2n = 4x = 28), were sampled from the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP) to estimate whether intraspecific variation could affect the genomic relationships by genomic in situ hybridization (GISH), and quantify the genome size of Elymus among different altitude ecological groups by flow cytometry. The genome size of E. nutans, E. burchan-buddae, and E. sibiricus varied from 12.38 to 22.33, 8.81 to 18.93, and 11.46 to 20.96 pg/2C with the averages of 19.59, 12.39, and 16.85 pg/2C, respectively. The curve regression analysis revealed a strong correlation between altitude and nuclear DNA content in three Elymus species. In addition, the chromosomes of the St and Y genomes demonstrated higher polymorphism than that of the H genome. Larger genome size variations occurred in the mid-altitude populations (3,900–4,300 m) compared with other-altitude populations, suggesting a notable altitudinal pattern in genome size variation, which shaped genome evolution by altitude. This result supports our former hypothesis that genetic richness center at medium altitude is useful and valuable for species adaptation to highland environmental conditions, germplasm utilization, and conservation.

A greenhouse experiment was conducted with five Elymus grass species: Elymus dahuricus Turcz., Elymus cylindricus Franchet, Elymus breviaristatus Keng f., Elymus nutans Griseb., and Elymus sibiricus L., measuring N2O emissions from sheep urine-affected soil, and a biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) assay was performed on root exudates of these five species. The abundances of amoA gene of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea and nirK and nirS denitrification genes were measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The mean total emissions over 6 weeks varied significantly among the Elymus species and ranged from 0.34 to 0.94 kg N2O-N·ha−1 in the urine treatment. The highest emissions were observed from Elymus breviaristatus while the lowest emissions were observed in Elymus sibiricus. All the Elymus grass species were capable of exuding BNI compounds and the highest BNI capacity was observed in Elymus sibiricus. The nirS gene abundance response to urine addition was significantly greater than other genes and varied significantly depending on Elymus species. The BNI % and nirS gene abundance were negatively and positively, respectively, related to total N2O-N emissions during the first 2 weeks after urine addition when emissions were apparent. The genus Elymus L. in the tribe Triticeae (Poaceae) includes economically and ecologically important forage grasses. The genus contains the pivotal St genome from Pseudoroegneria in combination with other genomes in the tribe. Many Elymus species are tetraploids containing the StY genomes. It is thought that polyploidization characterizes the speciation of the genus in which the Y is considered as another key genome. Based on data from cytological, genome in situ hybridization, and molecular studies, we hypothesized an endo‐allopolyploidy origin of the StY‐genome species from the autotetraploid Pseudoroegneria species. To test this hypothesis, we amplified, cloned, and sequenced five single‐copy nuclear genes (i.e., alcohol dehydrogenase 1–3, Adh1–Adh3, RNA polymerase II, Rpb2; and Waxy) from Elymus, Pseudoroegneria, and Hordeum species. The phylogenetic trees constructed based on the sequencing analyses of all genes indicated that diploid and autotetraploid Pseudoroegneria species were closely related, although with considerable genetic variation in tetraploids. In addition, the StY‐genome Elymus species tended to have a close relationship with the diploid and autotetraploid Pseudoroegneria species, although different phylogenetic relationships among the gene trees were detected. These results indicated that the StY‐genome species may have an autotetraploid origin and experienced recurrent hybridization. The complex St genomes in Pseudoroegneria in the polyploid state may gain more opportunities for within‐species differentiation and recurrent hybridization. The genus ElymusL., together with wheat, rye, and barley, belongs to the tribe Triticeae. Apart from its economic value, this tribe is characterized by abundance of polyploid taxa formed in the course of remote hybridization. Single-copy nuclear genes are convenient markers for identification of source genomes incorporated into polyploids. In the present work, a CAPS-marker is developed to distinguish basic St, H, and Y genomes comprising polyploid genomes of Asiatic species of the genus Elymus. The test is based on electrophoretic analysis of restriction patterns of a PCR-amplified fragment of the gene coding for beta-amylase. There are about 50 Elymusspecies in Russia, and most of them are supposed to possess one of three haplome combinations, StH, StY and StHY. Boreal StH-genomic species endemic for Russia are the least studied. On the basis of nucleotide sequences from public databases, TaqI restrictase was selected, as it produced patterns of restriction fragments specific for St, H, and Y haplomes easily recognizable in agarose gel. A sample of 68 accessions belonging to 32 species was analyzed. In 15 species, the earlier known genomic constitutions were confirmed, but in E. kamojithis assay failed to reveal the presence of H genome. This unusual H genome was suggested to originate from a different Hordeum species. In 16 species, genomic constitutions were identified for the first time. Fifteen accessions from Asian Russia possessed the genomic constitution StStHH, and E. amurensis, phylogenetically close to the StY-genomic species E. ciliaris, had the genomic constitution StStYY. It is inferred that the center of species diversity of the StH-genomic group is shifted to the north as compared to the center of origin of StY-genomic species, confined to China.

Aphids are major pests of cereal and pasture grasses throughout the world, vectoring disease and reducing plant production. There are few control options other than insecticides. Epichloë endophytes that produce loline alkaloids in their hosts provide a possible mechanism of control, with both meadow fescue and tall fescue naturally infected with loline-producing endophytes showing a resistance to Rhopalosiphum padi. We screened Elymus spp. naturally infected with endophytes that produced loline alkaloids at concentrations known to affect aphids on fescue but found no effect on these insects infesting Elymus. A synthetic loline-producing endophyte association with rye also had no effect on the aphids. After hypothesizing that the lolines were being translocated in the xylem in Elymus and rye rather than the phloem, we tested the rye and meadow fescue infected with loline-producing endophytes against a xylem feeding spittlebug. The endophyte in rye inhibited the feeding of the insect and reduced its survival, whereas the endophyte-infected meadow fescue had no effect on the spittlebug but reduced the number of aphids. Lolines applied to the potting medium of endophyte-free and endophyte-infected rye, ryegrass, and tall fescue resulted in a decrease in the aphid populations on the endophyte-free pasture grasses relative to the untreated controls but had no effect on aphid numbers on the rye. We tentatively conclude that lolines, produced in both natural and synthetic association with Elymus and rye, are partitioned in the xylem rather than the phloem, where they are inaccessible to aphids.

Fifty-three species of perennial grasses in the genus Elymus L. (Poaceae), which are widespread in Russia, are generally assumed to have three haplome combinations: StH, StY and StHY. The StH-genome species, endemic to Russia, remain the least studied. R. Mason-Gamer and co-authors have previously shown in a series of studies that a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the low-copy gene waxy (GBSS1) sequences significantly complements cytogenetic data on the genomic constitution and evolutionary relationships among both North American and Asian species of the genus Elymus. To determine the species’ genomic constitution and to evaluate the level of phylogenetic differentiation, we examined the GBSS1 gene in 18 species of Elymus from Siberia and the Russian Far East, including the fol- lowing 14 endemics: E. charkeviczii, E. jacutensis, E. kamczadalorum, E. komarovii, E. kronokensis, E. lenensis, E. macrourus, E. margaritae, E. subfibrosus, E. sajanensis, E. transbaicalensis, E. peschkovae, E. uralensis, and E. viridiglumis.PCR amplification products of GBSS1 gene fragments (including exons 9–14) were cloned and 6–8 clones per accession were sequenced. It appears that all the species studied have St and H subgenomic gene variations. The most significant differences between the subgenomic variants St and H were found in intron 13. The H subgenome contains a 21-bp-long deletion in intron 13 in all Elymus genotypes, probably derived from a common ancestor of the H and P genomes. Instead of this deletion, all St subgenomes have a relatively conservative sequence similar to that of the genus Pseudoroegneria, whose ancestor is considered to be the donor of the modern St subgenome for all Elymus species. Cluster phylogenetic analysis revealed differentiation in St and H subgenome sequences into two evolutionary variants: St1 vs. St2 and H1 vs. H2, respectively. Variants of the St and H subgenomes were found homologous to various modern species of the ancestral genera Pseudoroegneria and Hordeum: St1 to P. strigosa, St2 to P. spicata, H1 to H. jubatum, and H2 to H. californicum. The details of the relationships between Russian and North American species of the genus, as well as a number of microevolutionary interconnections in the group of boreal endemic species of Siberia and the Russian Far East were revealed. The new results obtained here are essential for the development of a phylogenetically oriented taxonomic system for the genus Elymus.

The root endophyte community of the grass species Elymus repens was investigated using both a culture-dependent approach and a direct amplicon sequencing method across five sites and from individual plants. There was much heterogeneity across the five sites and among individual plants. Focusing on one site, 349 OTUs were identified by direct amplicon sequencing but only 66 OTUs were cultured. The two approaches shared ten OTUs and the majority of cultured endophytes do not overlap with the amplicon dataset. Media influenced the cultured species richness and without the inclusion of 2% MEA and full-strength MEA, approximately half of the unique OTUs would not have been isolated using only PDA. Combining both culture-dependent and -independent methods for the most accurate determination of root fungal species richness is therefore recommended. High inter-plant variation in fungal species richness was demonstrated, which highlights the need to rethink the scale at which we describe endophyte communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Elymus nutans and E. sibiricus are two important forage grasses of the genus Elymus. But they are difficult to grow for commercial seed production due to serious seed shattering. We conducted a comparative transcriptome analysis of abscission zone to find possible transcription changes associated with seed shattering, explore candidate genes involved in seed shattering and identify candidate gene-based EST-SSR markers for germplasm evaluation. Results cDNA libraries from abscission zone (AZ) and non-abscission zone (NAZ) tissues of E. nutans were constructed and sequenced. A total of 111,667 unigenes were annotated and 7644 differentially expressed transcripts (DETs) were predicted, corresponding to 6936 up-regulated in AZ and 708 down-regulated in NAZ. We identified 489 candidate genes related to transcription factor, cell wall hydrolysis or modification, hydrolase activity, phytohormone signaling and response, lignin biosynthesis, and signal transduction or protein turnover. Eleven similar candidate genes involved in polygalacturonase activity, hydrolase activity, and mitogen-activated protein kinase were up-regulated in the abscission zone of the two Elymus species, suggesting these genes may have specific function for abscission zone development and seed shattering. A total of 67 polymorphic EST-SSR markers were developed and characterized based on the sequences of these candidate genes. Fourteen polymorphic EST-SSR primers were finally used to study genetic diversity in 48 E. nutans genotypes with contrasting seed shattering habit. The dendrogram based on molecular data showed that most accessions with similar seed shattering degree tended to group together. Conclusions The expression data generated from this study provides an important resource for future molecular biological research. Many DETs were associated with abscission zone development, and EST-SSR loci related to candidate genes may have potential application in identifying trait-associated markers in E. nutans in the future.

Hybridization, polyploidization, and crop‐to‐wild gene transfer within the agriculturally important tribe Triticeae are well explored experimentally, but the true consequences of both phenomena under natural conditions remain understudied. The present paper reports on an investigation of three species of couch grasses (Elymus hispidus, E. repens, and E. caninus) examining the ploidy levels and absolute genome sizes (1081 plants from 302 natural populations in Central Europe, verified by chromosome counts) and their morphological delimitation. In the present study, the hexaploid level prevailed in E. hispidus and E. repens whereas E. caninus was exclusively tetraploid. Introgressive hybridization between hexaploid species, unidirectionally shifted towards E. hispidus, was indicated by a continual pattern of genome size values. We did not find any evidence for heteroploid hybridization involving tetraploid E. caninus; however, we detected minority cytotypes among both E. caninus plants (hexaploid) and E. repens–E. hispidus hybrids (heptaploid and nonaploid) suggesting the formation of unreduced gametes. Morphometric results (367 plants, redundancy analysis, principal component analysis, and correlation analysis) mirrored the continual homoploid pattern of absolute genome size (including the unidirectional shift), and a significant correlation between absolute genome size and morphology was confirmed. Moreover, morphometric analyses detected additional characteristics for the delimitation of the Elymus taxa under study. Considering the crossability of E. hispidus with Triticum aestivum (bread wheat), the revealed extent of introgressive hybridization has implications for assessing the potential risk of gene flow between crops and troublesome weeds. Spatial arrangement is a key factor in maintaining community yield and stability via regulating component intra-/interspecific competition in an alpine climate environment. A 2-yr field trial was conducted on the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau, including cross row (S&#95;C), double row (S&#95;D), single row (S&#95;R), broadcast (M&#95;B), dependent row (M&#95;D) and independent row (M&#95;I). Our results showed that S&#95;C could avoid intraspecific competition by reasonable spatial arrangement, which favored the dominant component growth (1st year: leaf; 2nd year: stem and reproductive organ). For mixed communities, RII (relative interaction intensity) implied that interspecific competition also embodied on dominant component, and higher Elymus nutans component advantages seriously limited Onobrychis viciifolia's components growth in the 2nd year. More details displayed that E. nutans in M&#95;B or M&#95;D produced the maximum system yield via increasing leaf investment at the initial stages and stem investment after July 2019. Besides, M&#95;I possessed lower component numbers than M&#95;B and M&#95;D in the unit area. PCA analysis revealed that component numbers or biomasses changed synchronously, besides the E. nutans of S&#95;C, M&#95;B, and M&#95;D presented significant discrepancies compared to other treatments in September 2019, which verified the effect of sowing patterns on component growth (P < 0.05), but O. viciifolia in different sowing patterns was similar in the 2nd year. Considering the adaptability and production for the environment of the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau, S&#95;C is recommended for the promoted effect on component biomasses. M&#95;B and M&#95;D, with the merit of spacing utilization as well as higher resistance to variation in seasonal growth conditions via optimizing interspecific relationships for mixed communities, are adapted for increasing yield via component harvesting. Background: The genus Pseudoroegneria (Nevski) Löve (Triticeae, Poaceae), whose genome symbol was designed as "St", accounts for more than 60% of perennial Triticeae species. The diploid species Psudoroegneria libanotica (2n = 14) contains the most ancient St genome, exhibited strong drought resistance, and was morphologically covered by cuticular wax on the aerial part. Therefore, the St-genome sequencing data could provide fundamental information for studies of genome evolution and reveal its mechanisms of cuticular wax and drought resistance., Results: In this study, we reported the chromosome-level genome assembly for the St genome of Pse. libanotica, with a total size of 2.99 Gb. 46,369 protein-coding genes annotated and 71.62% was repeat sequences. Comparative analyses revealed that the genus Pseudoroegneria diverged during the middle and late Miocene. During this period, unique genes, gene family expansion, and contraction in Pse. libanotica were enriched in biotic and abiotic stresses, such as fatty acid biosynthesis which may greatly contribute to its drought adaption. Furthermore, we investigated genes associated with the cuticular wax formation and water deficit and found a new Kcs gene evm.TU.CTG175.54. It plays a critical role in the very long chain fatty acid (VLCFA) elongation from C18 to C26 in Pse. libanotica. The function needs more evidence to be verified., Conclusions: We sequenced and assembled the St genome in Triticeae and discovered a new KCS gene that plays a role in wax extension to cope with drought. Soil erosion leads to soil degradation and depletion of land resources, posing a significant threat to industrial production and ecological sustainability. In high-altitude regions, rill erosion is the main form of soil erosion in mining areas, however, our understanding of morphology and developmental characteristics of rills and the mechanisms influencing them remains limited. In this study, data were collected from 96 rill plots across two gold mines in the eastern Tibetan Plateau according to vegetation restoration modes (natural restoration (CK) and planted with Elymus dahuricus (ED), Medicago sativa (MS), and multi-plant mixed (Avena fatua L. + Elymus dahuricus + Medicago sativa + Oxytropis coerulea, MM)) and restoration periods (1 year, 3 years, 4 years, and 6 years). We investigated the variations of 7 indicators that can reveal rill morphological and developmental characteristics across different restoration modes and restoration periods, and utilized a partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) to analyze the effects of 15 indicators from topography, soil, and vegetation on rill erosion modulus (REM). The results indicated that artificial vegetation restoration effectively restrained rill development, notably by decreasing the frequency of wider (>15 cm) and deeper (>10 cm) rills when compared to CK plots. Planting MM and ED exhibited greater efficacy in controlling rill erosion than planting MS. However, the effectiveness of planting ED in controlling rill erosion gradually weakened with time, while MM consistently maintained a strong inhibitory effect. Topographic features, soil texture, and vegetation significantly influenced the REM through direct or indirect effects. A hybridological study of biotypes of species close to Elymus caninus: E. prokudinii, E. viridiglumis, E. goloskokovii, as well as a number of morphologically deviant biotypes in Russia and Kazakhstan, was carried out. The objectives were to study the levels of reproductive relationships and the degree of integration of the species E. goloskokovii, E. prokudinii, and E. viridiglumis into the E. caninus complex. Our estimates of the seed fertility of natural parental biotypes were within 60-90 %. Among the combinations of crossing in F1, the highest seed setting was found in the hybrids formed by parental pairs from close habitats, regardless of the taxonomic rank of biotypes. The highest fertility values (55.6 and 46.1 %) were found in combinations involving E. caninus, E. viridiglumis and E. goloskokovii. It has been concluded that the biotypes of these species included in sexual hybridization form a single recombination gene pool, within which slight differences in reproductive compatibility are observed. The nature of the inheritance of the diagnostic features of lemmas "presence of trichomes" and "length of awns", according to the digenic and monogenic type, respectively, is shown. The high seed fertility of the created hybrids and the presence of intermediate forms in the F2 generation according to distinctive features indicate the possibility of interspecific introgression when species grow together in natural populations. Thus, the assessment of the inheritance of diagnostic characters makes it possible to classify E. goloskokovii, E. prokudinii, and E. viridiglumis as intraspecific taxa of E. caninus s. l. Data were obtained on the morphological and reproductive properties of interspecific hybrids with the participation of the species E. mutabilis as a possible donor in the speciation of taxa close to E. caninus. In cross combinations of E. caninus × E. mutabilis and E. mutabilis × E. caninus, lower values of seed fertility of hybrids in the F1 and F2 generations were noted compared to hybrids between the species E. caninus, E. goloskokovii, E. prokudinii and E. viridiglumis. The successful introduction of the C4 pathway into C3 crops would increase photosynthetic rates and crop productivity. However, our poor understanding of how Kranz leaf anatomy develops poses a great obstacle. In particular, the origin, development, and genetics of bundle sheath (BS) cells in C4 plants are key points to elucidate. Here we report that Elymus tsukushiensis, a common C3 grass of the subfamily Pooideae, contains chloroplasts in the mestome sheath (MS) cells of the leaf, unlike most MS cells of C3 grasses. The chloroplasts are smaller than those of mesophyll cells. Immunogold localization showed that the chloroplasts and mitochondria of MS cells, respectively, accumulate ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase and a photorespiratory enzyme, glycine decarboxylase, as in mesophyll cells. Thus, we suggest that the MS cells have weak photosynthetic and photorespiratory functions. This finding provides an insight into the development and evolution of C4-type BS cells in leaves of C3 grasses.

All Elymus L. species are allopolyploids, whereas primary diploids are not part of this genus (with 2n = 14, x = 7). Widespread in Russia are mainly the species with genomic formulae StH, StY and StHY. According to the nomenclature system of Triticeae genomes, in the Russian Federation there are 53 species of Elymus with genomic constitutions StH, StY (2n = 4x = 28) and StHY (2n = 6x = 42). Environmentally damaging invasive plants can also serve as reservoir hosts for agricultural pathogens. Microstegium vimineum is an invasive C4 annual grass that is present throughout the midwestern and eastern United States. It can reach high densities in disturbed areas such as crop-forest interfaces, which creates the potential for pathogen spillover from M. vimineum to agricultural crops and native plants. A previous study that surveyed disease on M. vimineum found a large-spored Bipolaris species that was widespread on M. vimineum and also isolated from co-occurring native grasses. Here, we report that the large-spored fungus isolated from M. vimineum and the native grass Elymus virginicus is Drechslera gigantea, based on comparison with published descriptions of morphological traits, and establish that D. gigantea is a pathogen of M. vimineum and E. virginicus. We review the phylogenetic placement and taxonomic history of D. gigantea and propose that it be reassigned to the genus Bipolaris as Bipolaris gigantea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An Ethnobotanical Study of the Genus Elymus: Grains of domesticated grasses (Poaceae) have long been a global food source and constitute the bulk of calories in the human diet. While most contemporary grass domesticates consumed by humans are annual plants, there are over 7000 perennial grass species that remain largely unexplored for domestication purposes. Documenting ethnobotanical uses of wild perennial grasses could aid in the evaluation of candidate species for de novo crop development. In this study, we 1) provide an ethnobotanical survey of the perennial grass genus Elymus; and 2) investigate floret size variation in Elymus species used by people. We identified at least 21 taxa with recorded nutritional, medicinal, and/or material uses and at least 25 different indigenous communities associated with a use. The most common ethnobotanical use of Elymus in this survey is as forage, though at least 12 species are consumed by humans. Elymus species used for food warrant pre-breeding and future analyses to assess potential utility in perennial agricultural systems. We found average floret area does not differ significantly across geographic regions and among documented ethnobotanical uses, with the exception of species used for medicine in North America. A variety of Elymus species show promise for continued human use, and standing morphological variation in the genus should be further explored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To detect the genomic constitutions and investigate the evolutionary relationships between Campeiostachys Drobov and Elymus L. species, we have cloned and analyzed 271 5S nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences from 27 accessions of these species, mostly of Chinese origin. We identified Long H1, Short S1, and Long Y1 unit classes in nine Campeiostachys or Elymus species. The identification of the three orthologous unit classes was confirmed by the neighbor‐joining tree of each unit class from PAUP and the phylogeny tree of three unit classes from MrBayes. The results suggested that these Elymus species comprise StYH haplomes and should be included in Campeiostachys. The phylogeny tree showed a clear separation between the S1 unit class and Y1 unit class. However, Y1 unit class sequences formed a sister clade to the S1 unit class, implying that although the St and Y haplomes might have some affinity, they are distinct from one another. The phylogeny tree also indicated that the five species in sect. Turczaninovia (C. dahurica var. cylindrica, C. dahurica var. dahurica, C. dahurica var. tangutorum, E. purpuraristatus, and E. dahuricus Turcz. ex Griseb. var. violeus C. P. Wang & H. L. Yang) might share a more recent common ancestor, whereas the four species in sect. Elymus (C. nutans, E. breviaristatus (Keng) Keng ex Keng f., E. sinosubmuticus (Keng) Keng f., and E. atratus (Nevski) Hand.‐Mazz.) share a close relationship. By identifying only one type of unit class for each haplome, we propose that the 5S nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences of species within Campeiostachys might have undergone haplome‐specific concerted evolution. Currently three species are recognized in Russia within the genus Elymus subsection Pendulini, namely, E. pendulinus, E. brachypodioides and E. vernicosus. The degree and quality of lemma and stem node vestitures and ecology are considered important characters for species delineation. In Primorsky krai and Altai Republic we have found a number of mixed populations in which there is visually continuous variation in lemmas vestitures from being completely glabrous to densely puberulent or pilose. Additionally, there are a number of populations in Primorsky krai in which individuals having either smooth or pilous stem nodes grow together. A study of polymorphism of ISSR markers among selective accessions of three species from different locations was carried out together with the reference species E. ciliaris and E. gmelinii. The consensus dendrogramm constructed by results of ISSR markers has shown no taxon specific patterns in accessions of the subsection Pendulini. Hybrids between the individuals of different species of the subsection in six cross combinations have been created. All F1 plants had normally developed open anthers, seed fertility (SF) ranged from 8 % to 89 % in different combinations. In F2 populations no sterile individuals or increase of SF up to normal values were observed. Hence, three taxa form a unified recombination gene pool. The diagnostic characters were found to be controlled by one pair of alternative alleles for glabrous vs. hairy stem nodes, and by one or two pairs of alleles in different cross combinations for glabrous vs. hairy lemmas. These characters can be considered as normal inter- and/or intra-population variation. Therefore, E. brachypodioides and E. vernicosus need to be relegated to infraspecific rank within Elymus pendulinus s. l. as varieties.

Importance: On the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), feed shortages are common due to cold environmental conditions and the short growing season of crops. Therefore, effective preservation, such as the ensiling of local forage, is becoming increasingly important to balance the seasonal imbalance between the forage supply and the nutritional needs of domestic animals in this area. However, the structure of the microbial community of the forage, which is influenced by climatic conditions such as altitude differences, has a major impact on the fermentation quality and microbial succession of the ensiled forage. Therefore, we investigated microbial community dynamics, co-occurrence, functional shifts, and natural fermentation profiles of Elymus nutans silage as a function of altitudinal gradients. Results show that silage from Chenduo at higher elevations has better fermentation quality and higher abundance of Lacticaseibacillus and Levilactobacillus than ensiled forage from other regions. Cd pollution is a global environmental problem. However, the response mechanism of the alpine plant Pelagia under Cd stress remains unclear. Therefore, in this study, a native plant( Elymus nutans Griseb.) of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau was used as the material to quantify plant height, leaf number, length of leaf, crown width, root number, biomass, Dry weight malondialdehyde (MDA), free proline, superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate enzyme (APX), catalase (CAT) and chlorophyll contents under different Cd concentrations. The results showed that the growth of Elymus nutans Griseb. was a phenomenon of "low concentration promotes growth, high concentration inhibited growth" under Cd treatment. It meant that 10 mg·L -1  Cd promoted the growth of leaf number, plant height, crown width and tiller number, while 40 mg·L -1  Cd inhibited the growth of root number and biomass of Elymus nutans Griseb. compare with the control. The MDA content, free proline content, SOD activity, APX activity and CAT activity of Elymus nutans Griseb. was increased with the increase of Cd treatment concentration to resist the oxidative damage caused by Cd to the body. At the same time, the accumulation of chlorophyll A, chlorophyll B and chlorophyll AB was decreased with the increase of Cd stress concentration. In addition, the carotenoid content did not change much between the control group and the treatment group, indicating that Cd treatment had little effect on it. The results could provide a reference for the mechanism of heavy metal resistance and the selection and improvement of Cd -resistant varieties of Elymus nutans Griseb.

Alkalinity regulation and nutrient accumulation are critical factors in the construction of plant and microbial communities and soil formation in bauxite residue, and are extremely important for sustainable vegetation restoration in bauxite residue disposal areas. However, the establishment and succession of microbial communities driven by plant colonization-mediated improvements in the physicochemical properties of bauxite residues remain poorly understood. Thus, in this study, we determined the saline-alkali properties and dissolved organic matter (DOM) components under plant growth conditions and explored the microbial community diversity and structure using Illumina high-throughput sequencing. The planting of Elymus dahuricus (E. dahuricus) in the bauxite residue resulted in a significant decrease in total alkalinity (TA), exchangeable Na, and electrical conductivity (EC) as well as the release of more tryptophan-like protein compounds and low-molecular-weight humic substances associated with biological activities into the bauxite residue substrate. Taxonomical analysis revealed an initial-stage bacterial and fungal community dominated by alkaline-tolerant Actinobacteriota, Firmicutes, and Ascomycota, and an increase in the relative abundances of the phyla Bacteroidota, Cyanobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Gemmatimonadota. The biological activities of phylum Actinobacteriota, Bacteroidota, and Gemmatimonadota were significantly associated with protein-like and UVA-like humic substances. As eutrophic bacteria, Proteobacteria participate in the transformation of humic substances and can not only utilize small molecules of organic matter and convert them into humic substances but also promote the gradual conversion of humic acids into simple molecular compounds. Our results suggest that plant roots secrete organic matter and microbial metabolites as the main biogenic organic matter that participates in the establishment and succession of the microbial community in bauxite residues. Herbivory creates conflicts between a plant's need to allocate resources for growth and defense. It is not yet clear how plants rebalance resource utilization between growth and defense in response to increasing grazing intensity. We measured characteristics of the primary and secondary metabolism of Leymus chinensis at five levels of grazing intensity (control, light, moderate, heavy and extremely heavy). Furthermore, we evaluated hormone signaling by quantifying the impact of key hormones on plant growth and defense. Under light grazing intensity, indole‐3‐acetic acid and jasmonates appeared to promote the growth of L. chinensis through a high photosynthetic rate, high water‐use efficiency and high soluble protein contents, whereas abscisic acid decreased these properties. Under moderate grazing intensity, L. chinensis had a low photosynthetic capacity but greater production of secondary metabolites (tannins, total flavonoids and total phenols), possibly induced by salicylic acid. When the grazing pressure further intensified, L. chinensis translocated more carbohydrates to its roots in order to survive and regrow. Leymus chinensis therefore exhibited a trade‐off between growth and defense in order to survive and reproduce under herbivory. Many restoration projects use seeds to found new populations, and understanding phenotypic traits associated with seedling establishment in disturbed and invaded communities is important for restoration efforts world‐wide. Focusing on the perennial grass Elymus elymoides, a native species common to sagebrush steppe communities in the Western United States, we asked if seed and seedling traits could predict field establishment.We collected seeds from 34 populations from the western Great Basin. In greenhouse studies, we measured variation in seed and seedling characteristics of wild populations and one cultivar. We also quantified abiotic conditions at the collection location and asked if these characteristics predicted survival and other fitness metrics at five planting sites. Planting sites were all near‐monocultures of the invasive annual grass Bromus tectorum, and all sites experienced similar, below‐average precipitation during the experiment.Phenotypic traits were strongly correlated with performance across all sites, with remarkably high predictive power. Seeds from populations with longer roots, larger seeds and earlier emergence were significantly more likely to survive the first growing season (R2 = 0.66, p < 0.0001). In contrast, while some abiotic variables at the collection location (e.g. 30‐year average summer precipitation and fall minimum temperatures) were associated with field performance at some sites, abiotic variables explained less variation in performance than traits (average R2 = 0.22). Despite the low predictive power of abiotic variables, populations that performed best at each field site were from locations with climate variables similar to planting sites.Synthesis and applications. The best seed sources for restoration of Elymus elymoides in invaded sites were populations with longer roots, larger seeds and earlier emergence. Vertically transmitted microbes are common in macro‐organisms and can enhance host defense against environmental stress. Because vertical transmission couples host and symbiont lineages, symbionts may become specialized to host species or genotypes. Specialization and contrasting reproductive modes of symbiotic partners could create incompatibilities between inherited symbionts and novel host genotypes when hosts outcross or hybridize. Such incompatibilities could manifest as failed colonization or poor symbiont growth in host offspring that are genetically dissimilar from their maternal host. Moreover, outcrossing between host species could influence both host and symbiont reproductive performance. We tested these hypotheses by manipulating outcrossing between populations and species of two grasses, Elymus virginicus and E. canadensis, that host vertically transmitted fungal endophytes (genus Epichloё). In both greenhouse and field settings, we found that host–symbiont compatibility was robust to variation in host genetic background, spanning within‐population, between‐population and between‐species crosses. Symbiont transmission into the F1 generation was generally high and weakly affected by host outcrossing. Furthermore, endophytes grew equally well in planta regardless of host genetic background and transmitted at high frequencies into the F2 generation. However, outcrossing, especially inter‐specific hybridization, reduced reproductive fitness of the host, and thereby the symbiont. Our results challenge the hypothesis that host genetic recombination, which typically exceeds that of symbionts, is a disruptive force in heritable symbioses. Thickspike wheatgrass (Elymus lanceolatus [Scribn. & J.G. Sm.] Gould) is an important native perennial grass species used for rangeland revegetation in North America. Plant breeding efforts relying on space‐plant evaluations have resulted in limited improvement in this species. The purpose of this study was to characterize the performance of thickspike wheatgrass half‐sib families under space‐plant and sward plot evaluations, estimate the correlation between measured traits in both evaluation settings, and determine the validity of selecting thickspike wheatgrass for rangeland revegetation in the nontarget environment space‐plant plots. The study included 50 thickspike wheatgrass half‐sib families and five commercial cultivars and experimental populations which were evaluated over 3 years in space‐plant and sward plot evaluations at a field site in Box Elder County, Utah, USA. Collected data included stand percentage, flag leaf height, and herbage dry mass. Narrow‐sense heritability estimates were low to moderate (h2 < 0.60) and Spearman and genetic correlation estimates among traits were also generally low to moderate. Overall, there was little evidence to suggest the use space‐plant evaluations in thickspike wheatgrass improvement programmes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: Characteristics of a strain Pediococcus pentosaceus Q6 isolated from Elymus nutans growing on the Tibetan plateau and its effects on E. nutans silage fermentation stored at low temperature were investigated. Methods and Results: Sugar fermentation pattern and growth profiles of the strain Q6 and its reference strain APP were characterized. The strain Q6 and APP were inoculated to E. nutans at ensiling respectively; and ensiled at different temperatures (10, 15 and 25°C) for 30, 60 and 90 days. The results indicated that Q6 could grow at pH 3·0 and at 4°C. In contrast to APP, Q6 could ferment mannitol, saccharose, sorbitol and rhamnose. Lower pH in Q6‐treated silages fermented for 60 days at 10 and 15°C was found compared with the control and APP‐treated groups. For the silages that were stored at 10 or 15°C, the greatest lactic acid content were detected in Q6‐inoculated silages ensiled for 30 and 60 days respectively. There were no differences in pH and lactic acid content between Q6‐ and APP‐treated silages ensiled at 10 and 15°C for 90 days respectively. Conclusions: Inoculation of the strain P. pentosaceus Q6 could improve fermentation quality of ensiled E. nutans at the early stage of ensiling stored at low temperature (10 or 15°C). Significance and Impact of the Study: The selection of P. pentosaceus inoculants for improving silage quality at low temperature, which provides a candidate strain to make high‐quality silage in regions with frigid climate. In this study, we review the classification of two species, Elymus hispanicus and E. marginatus, which are restricted to highly valuable and sensitive Mediterranean ecosystems. The genomic composition of the two species is analysed by in situ hybridization. In addition, lodicule morphology and foliar anatomy of both species are compared with those of E. caninus, E. repens, E. sibiricus (i.e., the type species of Elymus s.s.) and Pseudoroegneria strigosa (i.e., the type species of Pseudoroegneria). The genomic formula 2n = 8x = 56; HStStSt is proposed for E. hispanicus and 2n = 4x = 28; StSt for E. marginatus. In this latter species, the absence of the ribosomal genes in one of the two St genomes suggests that diploidization may have occurred during the evolution of the species. Regarding foliar anatomy, E. hispanicus, E. caninus, E. repens, and E. sibiricus shared several characteristics, but the leaf blades of E. marginatus proved anatomically more similar to those of Ps. strigosa. The data compiled support the contention that: (i) E. hispanicus belongs to Elymus s.s.; (ii) E. marginatus should be transferred to Pseudoroegneria; and (iii) the morphology of the lodicules should be carefully reconsidered for appropriately describing the boundaries between Elymus s.s. and Pseudoroegneria.
