Biodegradable plastic is often perceived as a possible solution for microplastic (MP) pollution. Photodegradation is an important transformation pathway of biodegradable MPs in aquatic environments. However, the influence mechanisms of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from different sources on photodegradation of biodegradable MPs are poorly understood. This study explored the role of naturally and pyrogenically sourced DOM in the photodegradation of polylactic acid (PLA) MPs. The aromatics of natural DOM (NDOM) were higher than those of biochar-sourced DOM (BDOM) and showed a stronger improvement in PLA-MPs degradation, as evidenced by particle size reduction, crystallinity increase and polymerization decrease, breakage of surface morphology, and increase in oxygen-containing functional groups on MPs’ surface (O/C increase: 65.1% for NDOM; 34.9% for BDOM). Reactive oxygen species analysis showed that the excited triplet states of DOM (3DOM*) generated by NDOM produced more •OH and 1O2 than that of BDOM, accelerating PLA-MPs photodegradation. Such photodegradation processes were further enhanced through the sorption of DOM by PLA-MPs, in which non-aromatic components were preferentially sorbed, causing the enrichment of aromatics in the solution, leading to more 3DOM* formation. This study improves the understanding of the migration and transformation of biodegradable MPs with the presence of DOM. Graphical Abstract

Plastic pollution in natural waters and the continuous breakdown of plastic debris under environmental conditions has resulted in increased numbers of micro- and nano-sized plastic particles in the aquatic environment. Moreso, plastics are persistent in nature and could stay in the environment for thousands of years without completely degrading. Hence, researchers believe that the smaller sized particles will continue to break down to even smaller nano-sized plastics (i.e., nanoplastics). While many of the previous studies have focused on their short-time impacts, the long-term impacts of nanoplastics is not yet well understood. This study investigated the sublethal effects of dialyzed 20 nm and 200 nm carboxylated polystyrene nanoplastics to Daphnia magna. The study followed the OECD 211 protocol for 21-day chronic exposures. Separate groups of D. magna were exposed to 50 mg/L of both particle sizes and 0.1 mg/L of the 20 nm particles. Comparison of the results between the 50 mg/L for both particle sizes allows the use of particle mass concentration as a dose metric. Also, the particle numbers in the 50 mg/L 200 nm and 0.1 mg/L 20 nm treatments were comparable. Hence, comparison of their results allows the use of particle number as a dose metric. Overall, chronic exposure to both sizes of polystyrene nanoplastics showed sublethal effects such as growth, molting and reproduction of Daphnia magna, including at the 0.1 mg/L concentration of the 20 nm nanoplastics. The results of the comparison showed similar trends in most of the measured endpoints regardless of whether the results were compared using the mass concentration or particle counts as dose metrics. Microplastics (MPs) become ubiquitous contaminants in Marine Protected Areas (MPA) that have been planned as a conservation strategy. The present study provides a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, abundance, and distribution of MPs potentially affecting MPA worldwide. Data on MP occurrence and levels in sediment and biota samples were collected from recent peer-reviewed literature and screened using a GIS-based approach overlapping MP records with MPA boundaries. MPs were found in 186 MPAs, with levels ranging from 0 to 9187.5 items/kg in sediment and up to 17,461.9 items/kg in organisms. Peaked MPs concentrations occurred within multiple-use areas, and no-take MPAs were also affected. About half of MP levels found within MPA fell into the higher concentration quartiles, suggesting potential impacts on these areas. In general, benthic species were likely more affected than pelagic ones due to the higher concentrations of MP reported in the tissues of benthic species. Alarmingly, MPs were found in tissues of two threatened species on the IUCN Red List. The findings denote urgent concerns about the effectiveness of the global system of protected areas and their proposed conservation goals.

Exposure to micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) is inevitable due to their omnipresence in the environment. A growing body of studies has advanced our understanding of the potential toxicity of MNPs but knowledge gaps still exist regarding the adverse effects of MNPs on the cardiovascular system and underlying mechanisms, particularly in humans. Here, we reviewed up-to-date data published in the past 10 years on MNP-driven cardiovascular toxicity and mechanisms. Forty-six articles concerning ADME (absorption, distribution, and aggregation behaviors) and toxicity of MNPs in the circulatory system of animals and human cells were analyzed and summarized. The results showed that MNPs affected cardiac functions and caused toxicity on (micro)vascular sites. Direct cardiac toxicity of MNPs included abnormal heart rate, cardiac function impairment, pericardial edema, and myocardial fibrosis. On (micro)vascular sites, MNPs induced hemolysis, thrombosis, blood coagulation, and vascular endothelial damage. The main mechanisms included oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, pyroptosis, and interaction between MNPs and multiple cellular components. Cardiovascular toxicity was determined by the properties (type, size, surface, and structure) of MNPs, exposure dose and duration, protein presence, the life stage, sex, and species of the tested organisms, as well as the interaction with other environmental contamination. The limited quantitative information on MNPs' ADME and the lack of guidelines for MNP cardiotoxicity testing makes risk assessment on cardiac health impossible. Furthermore, the future directions of cardiovascular research on MNPs are recommended to enable more realistic health risk assessment.

Nanoplastic (NP) has become a global environmental concern due to its potentially wide distribution and unknown impacts on organisms. Many laboratory studies have reported the short-term toxicity of NPs but their long-term effects are unclear. Here, the chronic hepatoxic effects of NPs (diameter 100 nm; 0, 10, and 104 items/L) in medaka (Oryzias latipes) were evaluated after three-month exposure by investigating the alterations in enzymatic biomarkers (digestion, oxidative status, and immunity) and histopathology in the liver. The trypsin and chymotrypsin activities of digestive enzymes were induced at a low concentration of NPs (10 items/L) but inhibited at high concentration (104 items/L); only the amylase activity was significantly decreased in all NP-treated medaka. Oxidative stress was also induced by NP exposure, which was indicated by the responsive superoxide dismutase and catalase. Lysozyme was significantly reduced after exposure to a high concentration of NPs, while alkaline phosphatase was significantly induced at a low concentration. Exposure to NPs also caused liver damage (e.g., congestion and dilated sinusoids). Taken together, our findings show that chronic exposure to NPs at low particle concentrations can impair the liver health of medaka by affecting liver enzymatic functions and causing histological damage. This implies potentially long-term threats of NPs to aquatic organisms, which call for more long-term aquatic toxicological studies on various species using low environmental concentrations.

Microplastics could accumulate and enrich antibiotics in the aquatic environment. Despite this, the joint effects of microplastics and antibiotics on aquatic organisms are not clear. Here, we investigated the changes of microbial interactions in both gill and gut of marine medaka exposed to polystyrene microbeads (PS) and/or tetracycline for 30 days by using co-occurrence network analysis based on 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequences. We found that the single and combined effects of PS and tetracycline were more profound on the gut than on the gill microbiome. SourceTracker analysis showed that the relative contributions from the gill microbiome to the gut microbiome increased under combined exposure. Moreover, the combined exposure reduced the complexity and stability of the gut microbial network more than those induced by any single exposure, suggesting the synergistic effects of PS and tetracycline on the gut microbiome. The PS and tetracycline combined exposure also caused a shift in the keystone taxa of the gut microbial network. However, no similar pattern was found for gill microbial networks. Furthermore, single and combined exposure to PS and/or tetracycline altered the associations between the gut network taxa and indicator liver metabolites. Altogether, these findings enhanced our understanding of the hazards of the co-occurring environmental microplastics and antibiotics to the fish commensal microbiome.

Microplastics (MPs) are widely detected in wetlands as emerging pollutants of global concern. Co-occurrence of MPs and trace metals in wetlands is common and the vector effects of MPs on other environmental pollutants have been increasingly reported. However, the interaction of different MPs and trace metals under environmentally realistic conditions is not well understood. Here, we investigated the adsorption capacity of MPs for metals under simulated conditions of Poyang Lake wetlands in Jiang Xi, China, a Ramsar site of international importance for conservation and sustainable use. ICP-MS was used to quantify the amount of adsorbed metals onto different types of MPs. SEM-EDS and micro-FTIR were used to examine the morphological and chemical characteristics of MPs before and after metal adsorption. The influence of internal (polymer types and particle sizes of MPs) and external factors (water pH values, organic matters, ion strength, and sediment) on metal adsorption was systematically investigated. Metal adsorption equilibrium was most achieved at 72 h. The adsorption capacity of MP types to metal ions tended to decrease as PP PE PS, and the amount of adsorbed metals decreased as Cu Pb Cd. Antibiotic residues in the aquatic environment have been shown to induce significant adverse effects on the early-life stage development of aquatic organisms, though the underlying molecular mechanisms of these effects have not been well characterized. In this study, we performed global mRNA-miRNA sequencing, canonical pathway analyses, morphological, physiological, immunohistochemical, and behavioral analyses to comprehensively assess the cross-generational cardiotoxicity and mechanisms of antibiotic mixtures in zebrafish. Following parental treatment to 1 and 100 μg/L antibiotic mixtures (15 of the most commonly detected antibiotics) for 150 days, all 15 assessed antibiotics were detected in the F1 eggs, indicating the cross-generational transfer of antibiotics. Global mRNA-miRNA sequencing functional analysis predicted cardiotoxicity in the F1 generation by using the F1 whole fish. Consistent with canonical pathway analyses, significant cardiotoxicity was observed in F1 larvae, as well as the apoptosis of cardiac cells. Furthermore, let-7a-5p regulated the cardiac hypertrophy signaling pathway, suggesting mechanisms of miRNA of let-7 family mediating cross-generational cardiotoxicity of antibiotics in zebrafish. This study lays some groundwork for developing interventions to prevent parental exposure to environmental pollutants such as antibiotics from adversely affecting offspring development.

Microplastics and nanoplastics are emerging contaminants in aquatic and terrestrial environments. Due to the challenges in detecting these small plastics in complex soil matrices, data about their abundance in terrestrial environments are scarce and our knowledge of their impacts on terrestrial organisms is severely lacking. Here, we introduced a well-established terrestrial model organism - the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) - to study the chronic adverse effects of model micro- and nanoplastics. The toxicity of model dialyzed polystyrene spheres (1 μm and 20 nm) was assessedviadietary exposures to a wide range of concentrations (0.01 to 100 ppm). In a first experiment, flies were exposed from larval to adult stage for 13 days. Uptake of both particle sizes in the gastrointestinal tract of larvae was observed, with depuration times of 1 and 24 h for 20 nm and 1 μm particles, respectively. In adults, only 1 μm particles accumulated to detectable levels and nano computed tomography imaging revealed intestinal damage. Both micro- and nanoplastics significantly affected locomotion while mortality, development, and fertility were not significantly affected. A second 8 day experiment focused on the daily behavior of adults exposed to micro- and nanoplastics. We observed no effect on circadian rhythms but an increase in daily activity after micro- and nanoplastic exposure at 50 ppm, likely in response to a reduction in nutrient absorption due to the change in diet or intestinal damage. Overall, dietary exposures to clean spherical polystyrene micro- and nanoplastics caused low toxicity but significant sublethal effects in the fruit fly. This study establishes a baseline understanding of the impacts of model micro- and nanoplastic exposure to the fruit fly and motivates the need for further work focusing on naturally weathered plastic debris.

Nanoplastics (NPs

The extensive and increasing global use of antibiotics results in the ubiquitous presence of antibiotics in the environment, which has made them “pseudo persistent organic contaminants.” Despite numerous studies showing wide adverse effects of antibiotics on organisms, the chronic environmental risk of their exposure is unknown, and the molecular and cellular mechanisms of antibiotic toxicity remain unclear. Here, we systematically quantified transgenerational immune disturbances after chronic parental exposure to environmental levels of a common antibiotic, chlortetracycline (CTC), using zebrafish as a model. CTC strongly reduced the antibacterial activities of fish offspring by transgenerational immunosuppression. Both innate and adaptive immunities of the offspring were suppressed, showing significant perturbation of macrophages and neutrophils, expression of immune-related genes, and other immune functions. Moreover, these CTC-induced immune effects were either prevented or alleviated by the supplementation with PDTC, an antagonist of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), uncovering a seminal role of NF-κB in CTC immunotoxicity. Our results provide the evidence in fish that CTC at environmentally relevant concentrations can be transmitted over multiple generations and weaken the immune defense of offspring, raising concerns on the population hazards and ecological risk of antibiotics in the natural environment.

Ocean acidification may increase the risk of disease outbreaks that would challenge the future persistence of marine organisms if their immune system and capacity to produce vital structures for survival (e.g., byssus threads produced by bivalves) are compromised by acidified seawater. These potential adverse effects may be exacerbated by microplastic pollution, which is forecast to co-occur with ocean acidification in the future. Thus, we evaluated the impact of ocean acidification and microplastics on the health of a mussel species (Mytilus coruscus) by assessing its physiological performance, immunity and byssus properties. We found that ocean acidification and microplastics not only reduced hemocyte concentration and viability due to elevated oxidative stress, but also undermined phagocytic activity of hemocytes due to lowered energy budget of mussels, which was in turn caused by the reduced feeding performance and energy assimilation. Byssus quality (strength and extensibility) and production were also reduced by ocean acidification and microplastics. To increase the chance of survival with these stressors, the mussels prioritized the synthesis of some byssus proteins (Mfp-4 and Mfp-5) to help maintain adhesion to substrata. Nevertheless, our findings suggest that co-occurrence of ocean acidification and microplastic pollution would increase the susceptibility of bivalves to infectious diseases and dislodgement risk, thereby threatening their survival and undermining their ecological contributions to the community.

The immunosuppressive effects of antibiotics and the potential associations with the intestinal microbiota of the host have been increasingly recognized in recent years. However, the detailed underlying mechanisms of immune interference of antibiotics in environmental organisms remain unclear, particularly at the early life stage of high sensitivity. To better understand the gut microbiome and immune function interactions, the vertebrate model, zebrafish, was treated with environmentally relevant concentrations of a frequently detected antibiotic, enrofloxacin (ENR), ranging from 0.01 to 100 μg/L. 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing indicated diminished diversity, richness, and evenness of intestinal flora following ENR treatment. Twenty-two taxa of gut bacteria including Rickettsiales, Pseudomonadales, and Flavobacteriales were significantly correlated with immunosuppressive biomarkers, including a significant decrease in the abundance of macrophages and neutrophils. To validate the immunomodulatory effects due to altered intestinal microbial populations, zebrafish reared under sterile and non-sterile husbandry conditions were compared after ENR treatment. A significant inhibitory effect was induced by ENR treatment under non-sterile conditions, while the number of macrophages and neutrophils, as well as biomarkers of immunosuppressive effects, were significantly salved in zebrafish under sterile conditions, confirming for the first time that immunosuppression by ENR was closely mediated through alterations of the intestinal microbiome in fish.

Despite the relatively rich literature on the omnipresence of microplastics in marine environments, the current status and ecological impacts of microplastics on global Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are still unknown. Their ubiquitous occurrence, increasing volume, and ecotoxicological effects have made microplastic an emerging marine pollutant. Given the critical conservation roles of MPAs that aim to protect vulnerable marine species, biodiversity, and resources, it is essential to have a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, abundance, distribution, and characteristics of microplastics in MPAs including their buffer zones. Here, extensive data were collected and screened based on 1565 peer-reviewed literature from 2017 to 2020, and a GIS-based approach was applied to improve the outcomes by considering boundary limits. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present in crude oil are known to impair visual development in fish. However, the underlying mechanism of PAH-induced toxicity to the visual system of fish is not understood. Embryonic zebrafish (Danio rerio) at 4 h post fertilization were exposed to weathered crude oil and assessed for visual function using an optokinetic response, with subsequent samples taken for immunohistochemistry and gene expression analysis. Cardiotoxicity was also assessed by measuring the heart rate, stroke volume, and cardiac output, as cardiac performance has been proposed to be a contributing factor to eye-associated malformations following oil exposure. Larvae exposed to the highest concentrations of crude oil (89.8 μg/L) exhibited an increased occurrence of bradycardia, though no changes in stroke volume or cardiac output were observed. However, genes important in eye development and phototransduction were downregulated in oil-exposed larvae, with an increased occurrence of cellular apoptosis, reduced neuronal connection, and reduced optokinetic behavioral response in zebrafish larvae.

Artificial athletic turf containing crumb rubber (CR) from shredded tires is a growing environmental and public health concern. However, the associated health risk is unknown due to the lack of toxicity data for higher vertebrates. We evaluated the toxic effects of CR in a developing amniote vertebrate embryo. CR water leachate was administered to fertilized chicken eggs via different exposure routes, i.e., coating by dropping CR leachate on the eggshell; dipping the eggs into CR leachate; microinjecting CR leachate into the air cell or yolk. After 3 or 7 d of incubation, embryonic morphology, organ development, physiology, and molecular pathways were measured. The results showed that CR leachate injected into the yolk caused mild to severe developmental malformations, reduced growth, and specifically impaired the development of the brain and cardiovascular system, which were associated with gene dysregulation in aryl hydrocarbon receptor, stress-response, and thyroid hormone pathways. The observed systematic effects were probably due to a complex mixture of toxic chemicals leaching from CR, such as metals (e.g., Zn, Cr, Pb) and amines (e.g., benzothiazole). This study points to a need to closely examine the potential regulation of the use of CR on playgrounds and artificial fields.

Smoked cigarettes are the most prevalent form of litter worldwide, often finding their way into oceans and inland waterways. Cigarette smoke contains more than 4000 individual chemicals, some of them carcinogenic or otherwise toxic. We examined the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), estrogen receptor (ER), and p53 response pathways of smoked cigarette leachate in vitro. Both seawater and freshwater leachates of smoked cigarettes were tested. Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity were negligible at 100 smoked cigarettes/L, while statistically significant AhR, ER, and p53 responses were observed in the extracts of both leachates, suggesting a potential risk to human health through exposure to cigarette litter in the environment. Microplastic pollution is a major threat to the marine environment attracting attention from scientific and public communities. Although we have sufficient evidence that microplastic is ubiquitous in all ecosystems, the question of the harmfulness of microplastic exposure is still under debate. Filter feeders like bivalves are commonly exposed to microplastics in water and sediments and thus can serve as excellent biological indicators for microplastic pollution. A relatively rich toxicological literature has been focusing on microplastic effects on bivalves but we have yet to reach an agreement on the toxic effects and mechanisms of microplastics. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis and bibliometrics analysis of the microplastic studies in bivalves. The bibliometric analysis (used to evaluate the general research trends) showed that the investigation of microplastic distribution in the marine environment and the molecular mechanisms of microplastic toxicity are the two major hot spots of research. Based on analyses of ecologically and environmentally relevant microplastics concentrations, particle sizes and polymer types, we discuss the physiological effects of microplastics on bivalves, and the severity and direction of the effects at the cellular, tissue, organ and organismal levels. The meta-analysis results show that microplastics can induce time-dependent oxidative stress in bivalves. Generally, the activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased during short-term exposure but declined after long-term exposure to microplastics. Non-linear response of GPx, GST and SOD enzymes to MP exposure over time indicate that these enzymes are not good biomarkers of MPs effects in marine bivalves. The tissue glutathione levels and catalase (CAT activity) showed an increase during both short- and long term MP exposures and thus can be used as oxidative stress biomarkers of sublethal MPs effects in marine bivalves.

Recently, there has been increasing global concerns about the ecological impact of micro- and nano-sized polystyrene particles in marine environments. However, the potential threats of polystyrene nanoparticles to primary producers in freshwater systems remain unclear. Here, we explore the metabolite profiles and signaling pathways of freshwater cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus in response to short-term (48 h) amino-modified polystyrene nanoparticle (PS-NH2; 50 nm) exposure. We demonstrate that the positively charged PS-NH2 were acutely toxic to S. elongatus with an EC50 of 3.81 μg mL−1. Non-targeted metabolomics analyses suggested oxidative stress and membrane destruction as the main causes of PS-NH2 toxicity. Furthermore, disruption of glutathione metabolism and damage to membrane integrity were confirmed using two engineered strains of S. elongatus. These results provide new insights into polystyrene nanoparticles' impact on primary producers, improving the understanding of the toxic mechanisms of polystyrene nanoparticles in the freshwater primary producers.

The ubiquity of microplastics in aquatic and terrestrial environments and related ecological impacts have gained global attention. Microplastics have been detected in table salt, drinking water, and air, posing inevitable human exposure risk. However, rigorous analytical methods for detection and characterization of microplastics remain scarce. Knowledge about the potential adverse effects on human health via dietary and respiratory exposures is also limited. To address these issues, we reviewed 46 publications concerning abundances, potential sources, and analytical methods of microplastics in table salt, drinking water, and air. We also summarized probable translocation and accumulation pathways of microplastics within human body. Human body burdens of microplastics through table salt, drinking water, and inhalation were estimated to be (0-7.3)×104, (0-4.7)×103, and (0-3.0)×107 items per person per year, respectively. The intake of microplastics via inhalation, especially via indoor air, was much higher than those via other exposure routes. Moreover, microplastics in the air impose threats to both respiratory and digestive systems through breathing and ingestion. Given the life-time inevitable exposure to microplastics, we urgently call for a better understanding of the potential hazards of microplastics to human health.

This study investigated the significant influence of HCO3- on the degradation of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) during nitrate photolysis at 254 nm for water reuse applications. Contributions from UV, reactive nitrogen species (RNS), hydroxyl radical (•OH), and CO3•- to the CEC decomposition in UV/NO3- in the presence and absence of HCO3- were investigated. In addition, possible transformation products and degradation pathways of triclosan, diclofenac, bisphenol A, and estrone in UV/NO3-/HCO3- were proposed based on the mass (MS) and MS2 spectra. Significant reduction in the cytotoxicity of bisphenol A was observed after the treatment with UV/NO3-/HCO3-.

Studies evaluating sub-lethal responses of fish following exposure to irgarol are limited. Moreover, impacts of climate change on fish endocrinology may also contribute to the sublethal toxicity of irgarol. We assessed the effects of irgarol on thyroid endpoints in juveniles of Menidia beryllina under two different treatments of salinity (10 and 20 parts per thousand) and two temperatures (10 and 20 degrees C). Condition factor coefficients (K) of animals were significantly affected by 0.1 to 10 mu g/L of irgarol at the higher temperature. Levels of T3 were changed in whole body homogenates from both temperatures at 10%0 following exposure to 1 to 10 mu g/L T4 levels were altered only at 10 degrees C when animals were treated with 1 to 10 mu g/L (10 parts per thousand), and in 0.1 and 10 mu g/L (20 parts per thousand). Increased transcripts of deiodinase enzymes at 10 degrees C may be impacted by salinity and alter thyroid hormone homeostasis. Impact on gene expression of thyroid (alpha and beta) and growth hormone receptors were also determined. Previous studies showed that continuous exposure to ammonia nitrogen (AN) contributed to regional losses of benthic invertebrate diversity in China. Yet, the overall ecological risk of AN to aquatic organisms in major riverine systems of China has not been appropriately studied. Our research then investigated temporal (seasonally/yearly) and spatial distributions of AN and un-ionized ammonia (NH3) in major Chinese river basins using historic data generated between 2007 and 2014, and developed risk assessment criteria. Our results showed that the highest average AN concentrations occurred during winter (0.82–2.76 mg/L) and the lowest during summer (0.36–0.78 mg/L). NH3 exhibited the opposite trend with the highest average concentrations mostly observed during spring (15.13–92.84 μg/L) and the lowest concentrations mainly during winter (10.53–45.43 μg/L). Both AN and NH3 concentrations steadily increased and reached maximum levels in 2008 (AN: 1.22 mg/L and NH3: 50.65 μg/L), and then decreased. Temporal trends showed that the Yellow, Hai, and Huai river basins had the highest AN and NH3 concentrations. Subsequently, conventional (hazard quotients) and probabilistic (joint probability curves) methods were applied to assess the hazards and risks posed by AN and NH3. The results showed that the probability of exceeding the acute toxicity threshold for 5% of species (exposed to AN or NH3) was less than 13.3% and gradually decreased over time. To protect aquatic organisms, an acute criterion of 51.4 μg NH3/L and a chronic criterion of 1.14 mg AN/L at pH = 7.5, 20 °C were developed and are recommended for future risk assessment studies.

Crude oil is known to induce developmental defects in teleost fish exposed during early life stages (ELSs). While most studies in recent years have focused on cardiac endpoints, evidence from whole-animal transcriptomic analyses and studies with individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) indicate that the developing kidney (i.e., pronephros) is also at risk. Considering the role of the pronephros in osmoregulation, and the common observance of edema in oil-exposed ELS fish, surprisingly little is known regarding the effects of oil exposure on pronephros development and function. Using zebrafish (Danio rerio) ELSs, we assessed the transcriptional and morphological responses to two dilutions of high-energy water accommodated fractions (HEWAF) of oil from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill using a combination of qPCR and whole-mount in situ hybridization (WM-ISH) of candidate genes involved in pronephros development and function, and immunohistochemistry (WM-IHC). To assess potential functional impacts on the pronephros, three 24 h osmotic challenges (2 hypo-osmotic, 1 near isoosmotic) were implemented at two developmental time points (48 and 96 h post fertilization; hpf) following exposure to HEWAF. Changes in transcript expression level and location specific to different regions of the pronephros were observed by qPCR and WM-ISH. Further, pronephros morphology was altered in crude oil exposed larvae, characterized by failed glomerulus and neck segment formation, and straightening of the pronephric tubules. The osmotic challenges at 96 hpf greatly exacerbated edema in both HEWAF-exposed groups regardless of osmolarity. By contrast, larvae at 48 hpf exhibited no edema prior to the osmotic challenge, but previous HEWAF exposure elicited a concentration-response increase in edema at hypo-osmotic conditions that appeared to have been largely alleviated under near isoosmotic conditions. In summary, ELS HEWAF exposure impaired proper pronephros development in zebrafish, which coupled with cardiotoxic effects, most likely reduced or inhibited pronephros fluid clearance capacity and increased edema formation.

Micro(nano)plastics are emerging environmental contaminants of concern. The prevalence of micro(nano)plastics in soils has aroused increasing interest regarding their potential effects on soil biota including terrestrial plants. With the rapid increase in published studies on plant uptake and impacts of micro(nano)plastics, a review summarizing the current research progress and highlighting future needs is warranted. A growing body of evidence indicates that many terrestrial plants can potentially take up micro(nano)plastics via roots and translocate them to aboveground portions via the vascular system, primarily driven by the transpiration stream. Exposure to micro(nano)plastics can cause a variety of effects on the biometrical, biochemical, and physiological parameters of terrestrial plants, but the specific effects vary considerably as a function of plastic properties, plant species, and experimental conditions. The presence of micro(nano)plastics can also affect the bioavailability of other associated toxicants to terrestrial plants. Based on analysis of the available literature, this review identifies current knowledge gaps and suggests prospective lines for further research.
