This study determined the level of self-efficacy, communicative competence, leadership empowering behavior of administrators and teacher effectiveness of teachers in San Isidro North Davao Oriental Division. A descriptive correlational design was used in this study. A total of 75 teachers participated in this study. The respondents were selected through total enumeration since there were only a few teachers in the district. The survey questionnaire was utilized to gather data from the respondents. Mean was utilized to determine the level of self-efficacy, leadership empowering behavior, communicative competence and teacher effectiveness of teachers. Pearson product-moment correlation was used to investigate the relationship between variables. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the influence of self-efficacy, communicative competence and leadership empowering behavior on teacher effectiveness. Furthermore, the best fit model of teacher effectiveness was also investigated. Results revealed that levels of self-efficacy, leadership empowering behavior, communicative competence and teacher effectiveness are high. Moreover, self-efficacy, leadership empowering behavior and communicative competence were found to have a significant positive relationship with teacher effectiveness. Furthermore, both communicative competence and leadership empowering behavior significantly influence teacher effectiveness. Hence, the best fit model illustrates that 28 percent of the variance of teacher effectiveness is explained by the combined influence of communicative competence and leadership behavior. Small, isolated, and/or peripheral populations are expected to harbour low levels of genetic variation and may therefore have reduced adaptability to environmental change, including climate warming. In the Arctic, global warming has already caused vegetation change across the region and is acting as a significant stressor on Arctic biodiversity. Many of the rare plants in the Arctic are relicts from early Holocene warm periods, but their ability to benefit from the current warming is dependent on the viability of their populations. We therefore examined Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) data from regional red listed vascular plant species in the High Arctic archipelago of Svalbard and reference populations from the main distribution area of: 1) Botrychium lunaria, 2) Carex capillaris ssp. fuscidula, 3) Comastoma tenellum, 4) Kobresia simpliciuscula ssp. subholarctica, 5) Ranunculus wilanderi, 6) Sibbaldia procumbens and 7) Tofieldia pusilla In addition, we gathered population size data in Svalbard. The Svalbard populations had low genetic diversity and distinctiveness and few or no private markers compared to populations outside the archipelago. This is similar to observations in other rare species in Svalbard and the genetic depletion may be due to an initial founder effect and/or a genetic bottleneck caused by late Holocene cooling. There seems to be limited gene flow from other areas and the Svalbard populations should therefore be considered as demographically independent management units. Overall, these management units have small and/or few populations and are therefore prone to stochastic events which may further increase vulnerability to inbreeding depression, loss of genetic variation, and reduced evolutionary potential. Our results support theory predicting lower levels of genetic diversity in small, isolated and/or peripheral populations and may be of importance for management of other rare plant species in the Arctic., (Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Annals of Botany Company.)

Hybridization is frequent in the large and ecologically significant genus Carex (Cyperaceae). In four important sections of the northern regions (Ceratocystis, Glareosae, Phacocystis and Vesicariae), the frequent occurrence of hybrids often renders the identification of "pure" species and hybrids difficult. In this study we address the origins and taxonomic rank of two taxa of section Vesicariae: Carex rostrata var. borealis and C. stenolepis. The origin and taxonomic status of C. stenolepis has been the subject of substantial debate over the years, whereas C. rostrata var. borealis has received very little attention in the years since its first description in the 19th century. By performing an extensive sampling of relevant taxa from a broad distribution range, and analyzing data from fifteen microsatellite loci developed specifically for our study together with pollen stainability measures, we resolve the hybrid origins of C. rostrata var. borealis and C. stenolepis and provide new insights into this taxonomically challenging group of sedges. Our results are in accordance with previous findings suggesting that C. stenolepis is a hybrid between C. vesicaria and C. saxatilis. They are also in accordance with a previous proposition that C. rostrata var. borealis is a hybrid between C. rostrata and C. rotundata, and furthermore suggest that both hybrids are the result of multiple, recent (i.e., postglacial) hybridization events. We found little evidence for successful sexual reproduction within C. rostrata var. borealis and C. stenolepis, but conclude that the common and recurrent, largely predictable occurrence of these taxa justifies accepting both hybrids as hybrid species with binomial names. Long-distance dispersal (LDD) processes influence the founder effect on islands. We use genetic data for 25 Atlantic species and similarities among regional floras to analyse colonization, and test whether the genetic founder effect on five islands is associated with dispersal distance, island size and species traits. Most species colonized postglacially via multiple dispersal events from several source regions situated 280 to >3000 km away, and often not from the closest ones. A strong founder effect was observed for insect-pollinated mixed maters, and it increased with dispersal distance and decreased with island size in accordance with the theory of island biogeography. Only a minor founder effect was observed for wind-pollinated outcrossing species. Colonization patterns were largely congruent, indicating that despite the importance of stochasticity, LDD is mainly determined by common factors, probably dispersal vectors. Although it is generally agreed that the Arctic flora is among the youngest and least diverse on Earth, the processes that shaped it are poorly understood. Here we present 50 thousand years (kyr) of Arctic vegetation history, derived from the first large-scale ancient DNA metabarcoding study of circumpolar plant diversity. For this interval we also explore nematode diversity as a proxy for modelling vegetation cover and soil quality, and diets of herbivorous megafaunal mammals, many of which became extinct around 10 kyr bp (before present). For much of the period investigated, Arctic vegetation consisted of dry steppe-tundra dominated by forbs (non-graminoid herbaceous vascular plants). During the Last Glacial Maximum (25-15 kyr bp), diversity declined markedly, although forbs remained dominant. Much changed after 10 kyr bp, with the appearance of moist tundra dominated by woody plants and graminoids. Our analyses indicate that both graminoids and forbs would have featured in megafaunal diets. As such, our findings question the predominance of a Late Quaternary graminoid-dominated Arctic mammoth steppe.

Phylogenetic relationships and biogeography of the genus Cerastium were studied using sequences of three noncoding plastid DNA regions (trnL intron, trnL-trnF spacer, and psbA-trnH spacer). A total of 57 Cerastium taxa was analyzed using two species of the putative sister genus Stellaria as outgroups. Maximum parsimony analyses identified four clades that largely corresponded to previously recognized infrageneric groups. The results suggest an Old World origin and at least two migration events into North America from the Old World. The first event possibly took place across the Bering land bridge during the Miocene. Subsequent colonization of South America occurred after the North and South American continents joined during the Pliocene. A more recent migration event into North America probably across the northern Atlantic took place during the Quaternary, resulting in the current circumpolar distribution of the Arctic species. Molecular clock dating of major biogeographic events was internally consistent on the phylogenetic trees. The arctic high-polyploid species form a polytomy together with some boreal and temperate species of the C. tomentosum group and the C. arvense group. Lack of genetic variation among the arctic species probably indicates a recent origin. The annual life form is shown to be of polyphyletic origin.

We used a combined molecular and morphological approach to unravel variation in the autogamous Festuca brachyphylla polyploid complex in the arctic archipelago of Svalbard. Forty populations were analyzed for random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs) and 46 morphological characters. Eighteen RAPD multilocus phenotypes were observed in the 86 plants analyzed, based on 30 polymorphic markers. Multivariate analyses of the RAPD data revealed four distinct groups of multilocus phenotypes; in contrast, the variation was more or less continuous in multivariate analyses of the morphological data. However, we identified several individual morphological characters that unambiguously discriminated among the four groups of RAPD multilocus phenotypes. Analysis of type material suggests that the four groups in Svalbard can be referred to Festuca baffinensis, F. brachyphylla, F. hyperborea, and F. edlundiae. This study shows that concerted analysis of molecules and morphology is a powerful tool in low-level taxonomy.

We developed a combined molecular and morphological approach to unravel complex variation at low taxonomic levels, exemplified by some arctic members of Potentilla. Twenty-one populations from Svalbard were analyzed for random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs) and 64 morphological characters to test the hypotheses that (1) the P. nivea complex (section Niveae) consists of three taxa (P. chamissonis, P. insularis, and P. nivea), (2) three "eco-morphotypes" in P. pulchella (section Multifidae) should be considered different taxa, and (3) P. insularis originated as an intersectional hybrid (Niveae × Multifidae). Twenty-two RAPD multilocus phenotypes were observed in the 136 plants analyzed based on 35 markers. Three fairly distinct groups of RAPD phenotypes were identified in the P. nivea complex based on multivariate analyses and an analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA; 77.6% among-group variation). The variation within the P. nivea complex was more or less continuous in multivariate analyses of the morphological data. We identified, however, several individual morphological characters that separated unambiguously among the three groups of RAPD phenotypes, revealing that these groups correspond to the previously hypothesized taxa. Many identical RAPD multilocus phenotypes were observed in the "eco-morphotypes" of P. pulchella, suggesting that its conspicuous morphological variation is caused by plasticity or by genetic variation at a small number of loci. The hypothesis of the hybrid origin of P. insularis was not supported by the RAPD data. Overall, very little RAPD variation was observed within populations of the four taxa (2.1-16.7% in AMOVA analyses; average genotypic diversity, D, was 0.10-0.30). We conclude that detailed, concerted analysis of molecules and morphology is a powerful tool in low-level taxonomy.
