2. Connecting Computational Thinking in Everyday Reasoning and Programming for Elementary School Students

Abstract

Computational thinking (CT) has been advocated as an essential problem solving skill students need to develop. Emphasizing on CT applied in both programming and everyday contexts, we developed a humanoid robotics curriculum and a computerized assessment instrument. We implemented the curriculum with six classes of 125 fifth graders. Quantitative methods were used to compare students' performance from pretest to posttest. Learning analytics techniques were applied to examine students' problem solving processes. The results showed that students' CT performance improved in both programming and everyday reasoning contexts and that the curriculum benefited students with varied initial performance. The study shed light on how to connect and assess CT in everyday reasoning and programming contexts.

8. A hop testing alternative for functional performance following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Abstract

The purpose of this work was to provide a simple method to determine reactive strength during the 6-meter timed hop test (6mTH) and evaluate its association with isokinetic peak torque in patients following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Twenty-nine ACLR patients who were at least four months from surgery were included in this analysis. Participants were brought into the laboratory on one occasion to complete functional testing. Quadriceps and hamstring isokinetic testing was completed bilaterally at 60, 180, and 300 deg∙s-1, using extension peak torque from each speed as the outcome measure. The 6mTH was completed bilaterally using a marker-based motion capture system, and reactive strength ratio (RSR) was calculated from the vertical velocity of the pelvis during the test. An adjustment in RSR was made using the velocity of the 6mTH test to account for different strategies employed across participants. Repeated measures correlations were used to determine associations among isokinetic and hop testing variables. A two-way mixed analysis of variance was used to determine differences in isokinetic and hop testing variables between operated and non-operated legs and across male and female participants. Moderate positive associations were found between RSR (and adjusted RSR) and isokinetic peak torque at all speeds (r =.527 to.577). Mean comparisons showed significant main effects for leg and sex. Patients showed significant deficits in their operated versus non-operated legs in all isokinetic and hop testing variables, yet only isokinetic peak torque and timed hop time showed significant differences across male and female groups. Preliminary results are promising but further development is needed to validate other accessible technologies available to calculate reactive strength during functional testing after ACLR. Pending these developments, the effects of movement strategies, demographics, and levels of participation on RSR can then be explored to translate this simple method to clinical environments. 9. Linking Elementary Students' Problem-Solving Process to Computational Thinking

Abstract

In the core of computational thinking (CT) practices is problem-solving. However, there is little research on connecting CT with problem solving processes. We developed a computer-based assessment on CT that can log students' problem-solving processes and administered it to a group of fifth graders as a pre- and post- measure of a robotics curriculum. In light of our CT framework, we identified certain measures from collected problem-solving process data for each question analyzed and applied basic statistic analysis, clustering algorithms, and visualization techniques to find patterns. We found that students took different patterns in solving a problem even if their total scores were similar. These patterns prove promising in obtaining a better understanding of a student's CT.

Abstract

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is one of the most common knee injuries among adolescent athletes. Majority of the ACL injuries occur due to pivoting, sudden deceleration, and direction change without contact with any player. Preventive interventions can reduce risks of the ACL injury, thus developing a clinician friendly biomechanical assessment tool to identify athletes with such risk factors is crucial. In this study, the authors investigated the concurrent validity of a commercially available depth sensor, Microsoft Kinect, as a cost-effective alternative to the gold-standard 3-dimensional motion analysis systems in noncontact ACL screening for adolescent athletes during side-cut maneuvers. Study participants performed 45° side-cut maneuvers while collecting data from both systems concurrently. The sagittal and frontal plane kinematics were analyzed during the full stance phase and the first 20% of the stance (early deceleration). Absolute agreement (range: ICC =.767–.989) and consistency (range: ICC =.799–.992) were excellent for all measures except early deceleration frontal plane hip angle, which displayed good absolute agreement (ICC =.643) and consistency (ICC =.625). Findings showed that the Kinect has the potential to be an effective clinical assessment tool for sagittal and frontal plane trunk, hip, and knee kinematics during the side-cut maneuvers.
