We present near-IR JH spectra of the central regions of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1569 using the Florida Image Slicer for Infrared Cosmology and Astrophysics (FISICA). The dust-penetrating properties and available spectral features of the near-IR, combined with the integral field unit (IFU) capability to take spectra of a field, make FISICA an ideal tool for this work. We use the prominent [He I] (1.083\mu m) and Pa\beta (1.282 \mu m) lines to probe the dense star forming regions as well as characterize the general star forming environment around the super star clusters (SSCs) in NGC 1569. We find [He I] coincident with CO clouds to the north and west of the SSCs, which provides the first, conclusive evidence for embedded star clusters here., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the MNRAS

Accurate photometric redshifts are calculated for nearly 200,000 galaxies to a 4.5 micron flux limit of ~13 uJy in the 8.5 deg^2 Spitzer/IRAC Shallow survey. Using a hybrid photometric redshift algorithm incorporating both neural-net and template-fitting techniques, calibrated with over 15,000 spectroscopic redshifts, a redshift accuracy of \sigma = 0.06(1+z) is achieved for 95% of galaxies at 01) galaxy clusters. We present one such spectroscopically confirmed cluster at =1.24, ISCS J1434.5+3427. We present results from a near-infrared spectroscopic study of candidate brown dwarfs and low mass stars in the young cluster NGC 2024. Using FLAMINGOS on the KPNO 2.1m and 4m telescopes, we have obtained spectra of ~70 new members of the cluster and classified them via the prominent J and H band water absorption features. Derived spectral types range from ~M1 to later than M8 with typical classification errors of 0.5-1 subclasses. By combining these spectral types with JHK photometry, we place these objects on the H-R diagram and use pre-main sequence evolutionary models to infer masses and ages. The mean age for this low mass population of NGC 2024 is 0.5 Myr and derived masses range from ~0.7-0.02 solar masses with 23 objects falling below the hydrogen-burning limit. The logarithmic mass function rises to a peak at ~0.2 solar masses before turning over and declining into the substellar regime. There is a possible secondary peak at ~0.035 solar masses however the errors are also consistent with a flat IMF in this region. The ratio of brown dwarfs to stars is similar to that found in the Trapezium but roughly twice the ratio found in IC 348, leading us to conclude that the substellar IMF in young clusters may be dependent on the local star forming environment., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present wide-field near-infrared (JHK) images of the young, 2 Myr IC 348 cluster taken with FLAMINGOS. We use these new data to construct an infrared census of sources, which is sensitive enough to detect a 10 Mjup brown dwarf seen through an extinction of Av=7mag. We examine the cluster's structure and relationship to the molecular cloud and construct the cluster's K band luminosity function. Using our model luminosity function algorithm, we derive the cluster's initial mass function throughout the stellar and substellar regimes and find that the IC 348 IMF is very similar to that found for the Trapezium Cluster with both cluster IMFs having a mode between 0.2 - 0.08 Msun. In particular we find that, similar to our results for the Trapezium, brown dwarfs constitute only 1 in 4 of the sources in the IC 348 cluster. We show that a modest secondary peak forms in the substellar IC 348 KLF, corresponding to the same mass range responsible for a similar KLF peak found in the Trapezium. We interpret this KLF peak as either evidence for a corresponding secondary IMF peak at the deuterium burning limit, or as arising from a feature in the substellar mass-luminosity relation that is not predicted by current theoretical models. Lastly, we find that IC 348 displays radial variations of its sub-solar (0.5 - 0.08 Msun) IMF on a parsec scale. Whatever mechanism that is breaking the universality of the IMF on small spatial scales in IC 348 does not appear to be acting upon the brown dwarf population, whose relative size does not vary with distance from the cluster center., Comment: 53 pages, 20 figures, AASTeX5.0. We present a multi-wavelength study of RX J0848+4456, a cluster of galaxies discovered through X-ray emission in the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey. Our observations consist of WFPC2 imaging, optical spectra, and X-ray data collected with the Chandra observatory. We find that RX J0848+4456 consists of an X-ray emitting cluster of galaxies at a redshift of z=0.570 and a group at slightly lower redshift, z=0.543, with little X-ray emission. This lower redshift system, however, is a gravitational lens, with the lensed galaxy an unusual AGN or star-forming system at z=3.356. The cluster has an X-ray temperature of kT = 3.6 +/- 0.4 keV, a bolometric luminosity of 1.0e44 +/- 0.3e44 erg/s and a velocity dispersion of 670 +/- 50 km/s. These values all agree with the low redshift correlations for clusters of galaxies, implying a relaxed system with the ICM in equilibrium with the dark matter potential. The lower redshift group of galaxies at z=0.543 has, at most 1/5, more likely 1/10, of the X-ray luminosity of RX J0848+4456. Despite being a gravitational lens, this is a low mass system, with an X-ray temperature of kT = 2.3 +0.5 -0.4 keV and a velocity dispersion of only 430 +/- 20 km/s. We present a study of the galaxy population in the cluster RXJ0848+4453 at z=1.27, using deep HST NICMOS and WFPC2 images. We morphologically classify all galaxies to K_s=20.6 that are covered by the HST imaging, and determine photometric redshifts using deep ground based BRIzJK_s photometry. Of 22 likely cluster members with morphological classifications, eleven (50%) are classified as early-type galaxies, nine (41%) as spiral galaxies, and two (9%) as ``merger/peculiar''. At HST resolution the second brightest cluster galaxy is resolved into a spectacular merger between three red galaxies of similar luminosity, separated from each other by ~6 kpc, with an integrated magnitude K=17.6 (~3 L* at z=1.27). The two most luminous early-type galaxies also show evidence for recent or ongoing interactions. Mergers and interactions between galaxies are possible because RXJ0848+4453 is not yet relaxed. The fraction of early-type galaxies in our sample is similar to that in clusters at 0.5

Recent results on the incidence of red galaxies in a > 100 square arcminute field galaxy survey to K=20 and a K=22 survey of the Hubble Deep Field are presented. We argue that a simple photometric redshift indicator, based on J-K color and supported by spectroscopic results obtained with Keck, gives a reliable lower limit of ~25% for the fraction of z>1 galaxies in the 100 square arcminute survey. This fraction is substantially higher than found in previous smaller samples, and is at least as consistent with predictions for pure luminosity evolution as with those for hierarchical models. We present $K$-band luminosity functions for galaxies in a heterogeneous sample of 38 clusters at $0.1 < z < 1$. Using infrared-selected galaxy samples which generally reach 2 magnitudes fainter than the characteristic galaxy luminosity $L^*$, we fit Schechter functions to background-corrected cluster galaxy counts to determine $K^*$ as a function of redshift. Because of the magnitude limit of our data, the faint-end slope $\alpha$ is fixed at -0.9 in the fitting process. We find that $K^*(z)$ departs from no-evolution predictions at $z > 0.4$, and is consistent with the behavior of a simple, passive luminosity evolution model in which galaxies form all their stars in a single burst at $z_f = 2 (3)$ in an $H_0 = 65 km/s Mpc^{-1}, \Omega_M = 0.3, \Omega_{\Lambda}=0.7 (0)$ universe. This differs from the flat or negative infrared luminosity evolution which has been reported for high redshift field galaxy samples. We find that the observed evolution appears to be insensitive to cluster X-ray luminosity or optical richness, implying little variation in the evolutionary history of galaxies over the range of environmental densities spanned by our cluster sample. These results support and extend previous analyses based on the color evolution of high redshift cluster E/S0 galaxies, indicating not only that their stellar populations formed at high redshift, but that the assembly of the galaxies themselves was largely complete by $z \approx 1$, and that subsequent evolution down to the present epoch was primarily passive., Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures; accepted by the Astronomical Journal (August 1999 issue)

We report the detection, both in line and continuum emission, of a galaxy responsible for a damped Ly-alpha absorption (DLA) system at z=3.15 projected 2.3 arcsec from QSO 2233+131. The star formation rate implied by both the Ly-alpha and restframe far-UV continuum is approximately 7 M_sun / yr. The galaxy also shows no sign of an active nucleus and has blue colors, both consistent with it being observed early in its star formation history. The Ly-alpha emission is offset approximately 200 km/s from the DLA velocity, which could be explained as the rotational signature of a disk galaxy. We also report on the progress of an ongoing near-infrared narrow-band search with the Keck telescope for line emission from a population of primeval galaxies at high redshift. We have found several promising candidates which are being followed up with optical spectroscopy. The spectral energy distribution of the proto-galaxy candidate MS1512-cB58 at $z =2.72$ discovered by Yee et al. (1996) is presented. Photometry in seven bands ranging from $g$ to $K$$'$ (1300--6000 \AA~rest wavelength) are fitted with population synthesis models from Bruzual \& Charlot (1993). The data confirm a very young age for this galaxy, in agreement with ages estimated from preliminary \CIV~P-Cygni profile modeling. Single-burst models with ages greater than about 20 Myr can be discarded at the 99\% confidence level, and continuous star formation models with ages greater than about 35 Myr can be discarded at the 95\% confidence level. The spectral energy distribution is most consistent with a continuous star formation model of about 10--20 Myr, with reddening of $E(B-V)\sim 0.3$. No evidence for an older population of stars is seen, but the possibility of an older population with as much as 90\% of the galaxy mass cannot be ruled out. Galaxies believed to be responsible for damped Ly-alpha absorption (DLA) systems in the spectra of high-redshift quasars represent a viable population of progenitors of normal disk galaxies. They appear to contain a substantial fraction of the baryons known to exist in normal galaxies today. Here we report on the detection of an object, designated DLA 2233+131, responsible for a previously known DLA system at z(abs)=3.150 in the spectrum of a quasar 2233+131 [z(QSO)=3.295]. This is the first unambiguous detection of a DLA galaxy, in both emission line and stellar continuum. Its properties correspond closely to what may be expected from a young disk galaxy in the early stages of formation, with no sign of an active nucleus. We discuss the optical polarization properties of X-ray selected BL Lacertae objects (XSBLs) as determined from three years of monitoring 37 BL Lac objects and candidates. The observed objects include a complete X-ray flux limited sample drawn from the EMS Survey. The majority of the XSBLs classi- fied solely on the appearance of their spectra are members of the class of BL~Lacs since they possess intrinsically polarized and variable continua. The duty cycle of polarized emission from XSBLs is 40\%. The majority of XSBLs ($\approx 85$\%) have preferred polarization position angles on time scales as long as three years. This reflects stability in the geometry of the region emitting the polarized optical emission. We discuss the observed spectral dependence of the degree of polarization and some of the possible mechanisms for producing the observed characteristics. While dilution of the polarized emission by the host galaxy starlight is present in some objects, we demon- strate that the average polarization properties derived from our observations are not drastically affected by this effect.
