BACKGROUND: Mesoporous‐nanostructured silica‐Prussian blue composite is a highly potential material for silver ions removal and recovery from wastewater. Intense interest has been shown in the use of Prussian blue (PB), one of the important coordinated materials and its analogues in removal of toxic and valuable ions. METHODS: The micro‐emulsion template method enables the synthesis of Prussian blue (PB) within silica pores, yielding a nanostructured mesoporous silica‐PB composite. This rapid synthesis technique allows for the direct fabrication of the composite from mixed precursor solutions within minutes. The resulting material is effective for selectively extracting silver ions from wastewater at a specific pH level. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: In summary, the synthesized SiO2‐Prussian blue composite was extensively analyzed using various techniques including XPS, HR‐TEM, SEM, STEM‐EDX elemental maps, TGA/TDA, and N2 adsorption/desorption measurements. The composite exhibited a BET surface area of 203 m2 g−1 and a total pore volume of approximately 0.283 cm3 g−1with mesopores centered around 20 nm. This mesoporous SiO2‐Prussian blue demonstrated significant effectiveness in removing silver ions, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 107.5 mg g−1. The Langmuir and Sips isotherms showed the best fit among various adsorption isotherm types, with R2 values exceeding 0.984. Additionally, kinetic analyses revealed that the pseudo‐second‐order model accurately described the adsorption of silver ions onto the synthesized adsorbent. The nano‐particles exhibit remarkable long‐term stability, maintaining good reproducibility even after five regeneration cycles. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

KSA is one of the rising Gulf regions with many industrial developments, including petrochemicals, mining, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals. These activities have a direct impact on the climate and water resources. A Gemini surfactant has been used for enabling the electrochemical detection of As(III) at the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. Monitoring of As(III) in the presence of Gemini surfactant compared either in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant or in the absence of any surfactant was studied. The results showed that the cyclic voltammetry (CV) response of 70 ppb of As(III) at bare ITO in the absence of any surfactant shows a background response. In contrast, 1 mM of CTAB showed a weak oxidation peak at 630 mV without any cathodic peak. On the other hand, the capability of monitoring As(III) species in the presence of Gemini surfactant in neutral pH showed high sensitivity with a low limit of detection of 0.88 ppb. The calibration plot was fit using a linear, exponential Langmuir model. Thus, the bare ITO electrode itself could not detect the As(III); while, the use of the Gemini surfactant enhances the electrochemical activity of ITO towards the As(III). The efficiency of this Gemini surfactant is higher than that of CTAB. The presented sensor showed high reversibility that could conduct without a decrease in the sensor activity. Furthermore, this sensor's selectivity was verified based on the detection of As(III) in the existence of a high concentration of various organic and inorganic interferences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here, we have reported a simple and one-step hydrothermal method for preparing a highly uniform sodium zirconosilicate mesoporous sorbent supported with vanadium oxide nanoparticles (VO2). The results showed the formation of NPs with a surface area of 73.21 m2/g and with a particle size ranged from 67 to 80 nm. Furthermore, the proposed fabricated composite has been used to significantly remove the cesium and strontium ions from the aqueous solution by a batch method. The phase and structural characteristics of the VO2/zirconosilicate nanocomposites were well studied by using XRD, SEM, HRTEM, and nitrogen adsorption techniques. The results showed that the cesium and strontium ions were efficiently adsorbed by mesoporous VO2/zirconosilicate ion exchanger at a natural and wide pH ranges. Various kinetic and isotherms models have been developed to highlight the adsorption process of cesium and strontium ions. The fabricated zeolitic materials exhibited an adsorption capacity of 30.5 and 22.2 mg g−1 for Cs(I) and Sr(II), respectively. The collected data showed that the synthesized VO2/zirconosilicate has the maximum potential to properly remove Cs(I) and Sr(II) from the aqueous media. A microporous VO2/zirconosilicate nanocomposite adsorbent has been designed for efficient removal of cesium and strontium from contaminated samples. The synthesized nanocomposite indicated a highly ability to remove Cs(I) and Sr(II) ions in ultra-dilute solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel nanocaptor (GO-HDX) was designed based on the graphene oxide nanosheets functionalized with hydroxamate moieties that enabled the selective removal and recovery of extremely radioactive uranyl ions from wastewater samples. The synthesized nanocaptor (GO-HDX) was well-characterized using elemental analysis, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The U(VI) removal from aqueous solution with GO-HDX was investigated in terms of essential factors (initial pH, contact time and temperature), adsorption isotherm and thermodynamics were examined. The UO22+ ions adsorption under the studied conditions was well-fitted to the Freundlich model as well as to the pseudo-first-order model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
