Prolonged thrombocytopenia following HCT is associated with a significant risk of morbidity and mortality, yet no universally recognized treatment protocol exists for such a complication. First-generation thrombopoietin receptor (TpoR) agonists as well as second-generation agents are known for their role in enhancing platelet production, and their use is expanding across various thrombocytopenic conditions. Therefore, we conducted this comprehensive review of the literature to provide an updated evaluation of the use of TpoR agonists and explore their efficacy and safety in the treatment of extended post-HCT thrombocytopenia. The literature search was conducted using PubMed database from 1996 through December 2023, using a predefined strategy with medical subject headings terms. We identified 64 reports on the utility of TpoR agonists, five of them were randomized controlled trials and the rest were retrospective observational studies and case series, with a total number of 1730 patients. Second-generation TpoR agonists appear more convenient than subcutaneous recombinant human thrombopoietin (rhTpo) as they can be orally administered and exhibit similar efficacy in platelet recovery, as indicated by recent trial results. Among these agents, avatrombopag, unlike eltrombopag, does not require any dietary restrictions, which could be more favorable for patients. However, eltrombopag remains the most extensively studied agent. TpoR agonists had promising effects in the treatment of post-HCT thrombocytopenia with a good safety profile so far, highlighting the potential benefit of their use.Keywords: hematopoietic cell transplantation, thrombocytopenia, thrombopoietin receptor agonists, recombinant human thrombopoietin, romiplostim, eltrombopag

The purpose of this paper is to examine the bidirectional relationship between two sets of variables, higher education and training (eight indicators) and innovation (seven indicators), using the canonical correlation analysis (CCA). The study utilises data published by the World Economic Forum Reports for seven years (2012-2018) for a sample of 12 countries in the MENA area. CCA is used to analyse the relationship between the two sets of variables. It helps in the evaluation of the interchangeable relationships between the two sets of multiple variates. More in-depth analysis of the nature of such a relationship between the two sets of variables is provided through redundancy analysis to identify the percentage of the variance in each set that is interpreted by the other set, and the commonality analysis to determine the variance of canonical function that is due to unique or standard variables. Canonical analysis shows the causality between the two endogenous sets of variables. Also, the findings suggest that technology alone is not an antidote, while other factors might have a significant impact on innovation. Commonality analysis shows that the role of quality of management school in explaining the variation in canonical function of innovation in common with "quality of education system", "quality of math and science", "internet access", "training availability" and "staff training produce".

Abstract The present study evaluated the use of green-synthesized selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), using the microalgae Pediastrum boryanum as a diet additive in aquaculture to improve the growth performance, health, and immune response of Nile tilapia. Nile tilapia were fed different concentrations of green SeNPs (79.26 nm) as follows: 0, 0.75, and 1.5 mg/kg of SeNPs for 8 weeks. Following the trial, growth performance, biochemical indices, antioxidant and pro-inflammatory cytokine-related genes, and tissue histological examinations were performed. The study showed that SeNPs significantly improved (P 0.05). Abstract Background Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a multisystem genetic disorder that commonly involves skin, nerves, and skeletal system with increased neoplastic predisposition. This disease has been rarely associated with multiple congenital anomalies. Herein, we describe an Egyptian child with NF1 and coexistent bilateral congenital glaucoma, giant congenital melanocytic nevi (GCMN), alopecia, and hypospadias. Case presentation A 2.5-year-old boy presented with developmental delay, back swelling, and multiple congenital anomalies. His father and two sisters were known to have NF1. The child was diagnosed with bilateral primary congenital glaucoma at the age of 3.5 months and underwent trabeculectomy with mitomycin C therapy. Examination at the age of 5 months revealed marked hypotonia, multiple GCMN, scanty café-au-lait macules, left upper eyelid plexiform neuroma and trichomegaly, hypertrichosis of left eyebrow, hypertelorism, depressed nasal bridge, left frontal scalp alopecia, and distal penile hypospadias. At the age of 8 months, brain imaging depicted a markedly dilated left lateral ventricle, and he underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery. The child developed back swelling at the age of 2.5 years, and a spinal magnetic resonance image showed bilateral multiple spinal neurofibromas in the paraspinal region with intraspinal extensions. A whole exome sequencing identified a heterozygous missense variant NM_001042492.3:c.1466A > G (NP_001035957.1:p.Tyr489Cys) in NF1 gene. Conclusions The present case report adds to the knowledge of the phenotypic spectrum and variability of NF1 by reporting the association of multiple unusual congenital anomalies. Importantly, such congenital anomalies could be the first presenting features in patients with NF1 since cafe´-au-lait macules and other typical diagnostic criteria may not be apparent in the neonatal period and early infancy. Accordingly, NF1 should be considered in newborns with congenital glaucoma, GCMN, scalp alopecia, and hypospadias.

The increasing global awareness of environmental sustainability and the urgent need to reduce plastic waste have driven significant interest in the valorization of agricultural by-products. This study explores the potential of fruit and vegetable waste and by-products valorization using green and novel technology such as supercritical, microwave, ultrasound, high hydrostatic pressure and cold plasma technology for developing sustainable food packaging solutions. By utilizing components such as pectin from citrus peels, starch from potato skins, and fibers from banana peels, innovative biodegradable and compostable packaging materials can be produced. These materials not only reduce reliance on petroleum-based plastics but also enhance the circular economy by repurposing waste that would otherwise contribute to environmental pollution. The research highlights various processing methods, including extraction, blending with biopolymers, and composite formation, to convert by-products into films, coatings, and moulded packaging. The resulting products exhibit desirable properties such as biodegradability, flexibility, mechanical strength, and, in some cases, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, which can extend the shelf life of food products. Moreover, nanotechnology application in fruits and vegetables-based packaging is also discussed. Despite the promising benefits, challenges such as cost, scalability, and consumer acceptance remain. Addressing these issues through continued research, supportive policies, and industry collaboration is crucial for the widespread adoption of these sustainable packaging solutions. This study underscores the potential of agricultural by-products in creating eco-friendly food packaging, contributing to waste reduction and environmental sustainability.

Abstract Background Hyoid bone is attached to the mandible, tongue, larynx, temporal bone, and cervical spine via different types of muscles or ligaments. The tongue, mandible, and hyoid system play a crucial role in swallowing function. This within subject study aimed to evaluate the impact of mandibular implant overdentures on the displacement of the hyoid bones during the swallowing process. Methods Twenty five healthy edentulous subjects were selected for participating in the study. New complete dentures were constructed for all the participants. Subsequently two dental implants were inserted in the canine regions of the participant’s mandibular arch. In order to retain the mandibular prosthesis in place, ball attachments were incorporated into the mandibular dentures to convert them into implant overdentures. Using 10 ml of thin liquid bolus, videofluoroscopy swallowing examination was performed in three different oral conditions: without complete dentures (WCD), with complete denture (CDs), and with a mandibular implant overdenture (IODs). ANOVA with Bonferroni test was used to analyze the data in order to determine how the hyoid displacement varied throughout different oral conditions. Results Compared to complete dentures, mandibular implant overdentures showed a significant decrease (P 0.05) between the two oral circumstances in terms of superior hyoid displacement or duration for hyoid maximum elevation (DOHME). There is no penetration or aspiration for both complete denture and implant overdenture oral conditions. Conclusion Implant retained overdentures have a positive effect on hyoid displacement during swallowing of thin liquid bolus consistency relative to conventional complete dentures. Abstract Nasally colonized staphylococci carry antibiotic resistance genes and may lead to serious opportunistic infections. We are investigating nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococci other than S. aureus (SOSA) among young volunteers in Egypt to determine their risk potential. Nasal swabs collected over 1 week in June 2019 from 196 volunteers were cultured for staphylococcus isolation. The participants were interviewed to assess sex, age, general health, hospitalization and personal hygiene habits. Identification was carried out using biochemical tests and VITEK 2 automated system. Disc diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration tests were performed to determine antibiotic susceptibility. Screening for macrolide resistance genes (ermA, ermB, ermC, ermT and msrA) was performed using polymerase chain reaction. Thirty four S. aureus and 69 SOSA were obtained. Multi-drug resistance (MDR) was detected among most staphylococcal species, ranging from 30.77% among S. hominis to 50% among S. epidermidis. Phenotypic resistance to all tested antibiotics, except for linezolid, was observed. Susceptibility to rifampicin, vancomycin and teicoplanin was highest. ermB showed the highest prevalence among all species (79.41% and 94.2% among S. aureus and SOSA, respectively), and constitutive macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLSB) resistance was equally observed in S. aureus and SOSA (11.11% and 16.22%, respectively), whereas inducible MLSB resistance was more often found in S. aureus (77.78% and 43.24%, respectively). The species or resistance level of the carried isolates were not significantly associated with previous hospitalization or underlying diseases. Although over all colonization and carriage of resistance genes are within normal ranges, the increased carriage of MDR S. aureus is alarming. Also, the fact that many macrolide resitance genes were detected should be a warning sign, particularly in case of MLSB inducible phenotype. More in depth analysis using whole genome sequencing would give a better insight into the MDR staphylococci in the community in Egypt.

Heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) is a pivotal molecular chaperone with multifaceted roles in cellular health and disease. Herein, we explore how HSP90 orchestrates cellular stress responses, particularly through its partnership with heat shock factor 1 (HSF-1). PU-H71, a selective inhibitor of HSP90, demonstrates significant potential in cancer therapy by targeting a wide array of oncogenic pathways. By inducing the degradation of multiple client proteins, PU-H71 disrupts critical signaling pathways such as MAPK, PI3K/Akt, JAK/STAT, EGFR, and mTOR, which are essential for cancer cell survival, proliferation, and metastasis. We examined its impact on combating triple-negative breast cancer and enhancing the effectiveness of carbon-ion beam therapy, offering new avenues for cancer treatment. Furthermore, the dual inhibition of HSP90A and HSP90B1 by PU-H71 proves highly effective in the context of myeloma, providing fresh hope for patients with this challenging malignancy. We delve into its potential to induce apoptosis in B-cell lymphomas that rely on Bcl6 for survival, highlighting its relevance in the realm of hematologic cancers. Shifting our focus to hepatocellular carcinoma, we explore innovative approaches to chemotherapy. Moreover, the current review elucidates the potential capacity of PU-H71 to suppress glial cell activation paving the way for developing novel therapeutic strategies for neuroinflammatory disorders. Additionally, the present report also suggests the promising role of PU-H71 in JAK2-dependent myeloproliferative neoplasms. Eventually, our report sheds more light on the multiple functions of HSP90 protein as well as the potential therapeutic benefit of its selective inhibitor PU-H71 in the context of an array of diseases, laying the foundations for the development of novel therapeutic approaches that could achieve better treatment outcomes.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a debilitating chronic disease marked by persistent inflammation and intestinal fibrosis. Despite the availability of various treatments, many patients fail to achieve long-term remission, underscoring a significant unmet therapeutic need. BMS-477118, a reversible inhibitor of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4), has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in preclinical and clinical studies with minimal adverse effects compared to other antidiabetic agents. However, the potential benefits of BMS-477118 in chronic UC have not yet been explored. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of BMS-477118 in rats subjected to chronic dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) administration. Our findings indicate that BMS-477118 activates the interconnected positive feedback loop involving AMPK, SIRT1, and FOXO3a, improving histological appearance in injured rat colons. BMS-477118 also reduced fibrotic changes associated with the chronic nature of the animal model, alleviated macroscopic damage and disease severity, and improved the colon weight-to-length ratio. Additionally, BMS-477118 prevented DSS-induced weight loss and enhanced tight junction proteins. These effects, in conjunction with reduced oxidative stress and its potential anti-inflammatory, antiapoptotic, and autophagy-inducing properties, fostered prolonged survival in rats with chronic UC. To conclude, BMS-477118 has the potential to activate the AMPK/SIRT1/FOXO3a signaling pathway in inflamed colons. These results suggest that the AMPK/SIRT1/FOXO3a pathway could be a new therapeutic target for UC. Further research is mandatory to explore the therapeutic possibilities of this pathway. Additionally, continued studies on the therapeutic potential of BMS-477118 and other DPP4 inhibitors are promising for creating new treatments for various conditions, including UC in diabetic patients.

IntroductionLiver fibrosis is a significant global health burden that lacks effective therapies. It can progress to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Aberrant hedgehog pathway activation is a key driver of fibrogenesis and cancer, making hedgehog inhibitors potential antifibrotic and anticancer agents.MethodsWe evaluated simvastatin and STA-9090, alone and combined, in rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD) and exposed to diethylnitrosamine and thioacetamide (DENA/TAA). Simvastatin inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, depleting cellular cholesterol required for Sonic hedgehog (Shh) modification and signaling. STA-9090 directly inhibits HSP90 chaperone interactions essential for Shh function. We hypothesized combining these drugs may provide liver protective effects through complementary targeting of the hedgehog pathway. Endpoints assessed included liver function tests, oxidative stress markers, histopathology, extracellular matrix proteins, inflammatory cytokines, and hedgehog signaling components.ResultsHFD and DENA/TAA caused aberrant hedgehog activation, contributing to fibrotic alterations with elevated liver enzymes, oxidative stress, dyslipidemia, inflammation, and collagen deposition. Monotherapies with simvastatin or STA-9090 improved these parameters, while the combination treatment provided further enhancements, including improved survival, near-normal liver histology, and compelling hedgehog pathway suppression.DiscussionOur findings demonstrate the enhanced protective potential of combined HMG CoA reductase and HSP90 inhibition in rats fed a HFD and exposed to DENA and TAA. This preclinical study could help translate hedgehog-targeted therapies to clinical evaluation for treating this major unmet need.

Abstract Background Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) have gained interest due to their availability, efficiency, and their cost-effectiveness. Betaine is an essential methyl donor and takes part in various physiological activities inside the body; it is found to have protective and curative effects against various liver diseases. The present study aimed to evaluate the hepatotoxic effect of CuO-NPs on adult male albino rats and the ability of betaine to alleviate such hepatotoxicity. Methods Forty adult male albino Wister rats were grouped into 4 groups (10 rats/group): group I a negative control, group II (CuO-NPs) injected with CuO-NPs intra peritoneal by insulin needle (0.5 mg/kg/day), group III (betaine + CuO-NPs) administered betaine orally by gavage needle (250 mg/kg/day 1 h before CuO-NPs) and CuO-NPs (0.5 mg/kg/day) finally, group IV (betaine) administered betaine orally by gavage needle (250 mg/kg/day) for consecutive 28 days. Blood and liver samples were gathered and processed for biochemical, molecular, histopathological, and immunohistochemical investigations. Results Group II displayed a marked rise in alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Furthermore, there is an excessive upregulation of the inflammatory biomarkers interleukin1 beta (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). On the other hand, substantial reduction in glutathione (GSH) levels and significant downregulation at glutathione peroxidase (GPx) mRNA gene expression. Regarding the histopathological deviations, there were severe congestion, dilatation and hyalinization of blood vessels, steatosis, hydropic degeneration, hepatocytic necrosis, increased binucleation, degenerated bile ducts, hyperplasia of ducts epithelial lining, and inflammatory cells infiltration. Immunohistochemically, there was a pronounced immunoreactivity toward IL-1β. Luckily, the pre-administration of betaine was able to mitigate these changes. MDA was dramatically reduced, resulting in the downregulation of IL-1β and TNF-α. Additionally, there was a considerable rise in GSH levels and an upregulation of GPx. Histopathological deviations were substantially improved as diminished dilatation, hyalinization and congestion of blood vessels, hepatocytes, and bile ducts are normal to some extent. In addition, IL-1β immunohistochemical analysis revealed marked decreased intensity. Conclusion Betaine can effectively reduce the hepatotoxicity caused by CuO-NPs via its antioxidant properties and its ability to stimulate the cell redox system.

Abstract Previous findings indicated that the laser photobiomodulation is more effective than the control or placebo in preserving the alveolar socket. This study aimed to compare two different lasers regarding their effectiveness in aiding alveolar socket preservation. Twenty extraction sockets were selected then divided into two equal groups. Group A was exposed to 650 nm Diode laser, and Group B to 810 nm Diode laser following the same protocol and parameters after a standard alveolar socket preservation procedure with collagen plug. Radiographic analysis with cone beam computed tomography was done to compare the alveolar bone surface area immediately after extraction and three months post-operatively, while bone samples collected before implant drilling were histologically examined for newly formed bone evaluation and histomorphometric analysis in terms of percentage of new bone surface area, percentage of unmineralized bone and finally, immunohistochemical analysis of Osteocalcin reaction surface area as well as optical density. Radiographically, infrared (810 nm) Diode effect on alveolar bone surface area has significantly exceeded the red laser, while histologically, red (650 nm) Diode has demonstrated statistical significance regarding all parameters; newly formed bone surface area percentage, unmineralized bone area percentage and finally Osteocalcin bone marker reaction surface area percentage and optical density. Under the specified conditions and laser parameters, photobiomodulation using the 810 nm Diode got the upper hand radiographically, yet histologically, the red 650 nm Diode managed to dominate all histological parameters when both employed as an adjunct to alveolar socket preservation procedures.

Abstract Novel nanocomposite sorbent was produced by depositing nanostructured water treatment residual (nWTR) onto zeolite (Ze) using high-energy ball milling process. The physicochemical properties of nanocomposite (Ze-nWTR) prior and after Cd adsorption were analyzed by SEM–EDX, FTIR, BET and XRD. A batch study of cadmium adsorption (Ze-nWTR) was performed at various process parameters (sorbent dose, contact time, solution pH, competing ions, initial concentration and temperature). The obtained data were fitted to various equilibrium and kinetics models. The Langmuir and power function models successfully described Cd adsorption equilibrium and kinetic processes, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity (q max) value of Cd by Ze-nWTR nanocomposite (147 mgg−1) was 3 and 5.9 times higher than those of nWTR and zeolite sorbents, respectively. Increasing temperature from 287 to 307 K has resulted in increasing the maximum Cd adsorption capacity (q max) of the nanocomposite from 147.9 to 270 mgg−1. The calculated thermodynamics parameters suggested physical and chemical attraction between Cd and Ze-nWTR and the association of dissociative mechanism in Cd(II) sorption process. The excellent reusability and Cd removal ability of Ze-nWTR nanocomposite (98%) from industrial wastewater confirm its potential as promising adsorbent for wastewater treatment applications.

Abstract Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising approach for the controlled release of nutrients, particularly phosphorus and potassium. These essential plant nutrients are often applied in excess, leading to environmental pollution and loss of efficiency in crop production. Innovative economic and highly efficient fertilizers are urgently needed to achieve the targeted crop production worldwide in the presence of limited land and water resources. Therefore, in this study, novel, eco-friendly, cost-effective and enhanced efficiency nano-enabled fertilizers, NEF (nWTF1and nWTF2) were synthesized by impregnation of nanostructured water treatment residuals (nWTR) with (KH2PO4 + MgO) at 1:1 and 3:1 (w/w) ratios respectively using a planetary ball mill. The nWTR, nWTF1 and nWTF2 were extensively characterized. The water retention behavior and the sustained release of nutrients from the fabricated nano-enabled fertilizers (nWTF1 and nWTF2) in distilled water and sandy soil were investigated and monitored over time. The water retention capacity of the soil treated with nWTF2 after 26 days was 9.3 times higher than that of soil treated with conventional fertilizer. In addition, the nWTF2 exhibited lower release rates of P, K and Mg nutrients for longer release periods in comparison with the conventional fertilizers. This is a significant advantage over traditional fertilizers, which release nutrients quickly and can lead to leaching and nutrient loss. The main interaction mechanisms of PO4–K–Mg ions with nWTR surface were suggested. The results of the kinetics study revealed that power function was the best suitable model to describe the kinetics of P, K and Mg release data from NEF in water and soil. The produced NEF were applied to Zea maize plants and compared to commercial chemical fertilizer control plants. The obtained results revealed that the nano-enabled fertilizers (nWTF1 and nWTF2) significantly promoted growth, and P content compared with the commercial chemical fertilizer treated plants. The present work demonstrated the power of nano enabled fertilizers as efficient and sustained release nano-fertilizers for sustainable agriculture and pollution free environment.

BackgroundCerebrovascular diseases of the brain are usually defined by transient ischemic attacks and strokes. However, they can also cause brain injuries without neurological events. Silent brain infarcts (SBI) and leukoaraiosis are symptoms of both vascular and neurological abnormalities. This study aims to investigate the association between SBI, leukoaraiosis, and middle-aged patients with ischemic stroke.MethodsA single-center retrospective study of 50 middle-aged, ischemic stroke patients were studied from November 2022 and May 2023. The patients were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of leukoaraiosis. History taking, physical examination, brain CT scan, and MRI were all part of the diagnostic process. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) was also assessed through various factors. The statistical analysis included descriptive statistics, logistic regression analysis, and chi-square test.ResultsOut of the cohort comprising 50 patients, characterized by a mean age of 52.26 years (SD 5.29), 32 were male, constituting 64% of the sample. Among these patients, 26 individuals exhibited leukoaraiosis, with 17 of them (65.4%) also presenting with SBI. Moreover, within this cohort, 22 patients were diagnosed with MetS, representing 84.6% of those affected. The Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed a strong and independent association between leukoaraiosis and SBI. Individuals with leukoaraiosis were nearly five times more likely to have SBI compared to those without leukoaraiosis.ConclusionThe study highlights leukoaraiosis as a significant risk factor for SBI, alongside MetS. Advanced imaging techniques have facilitated their detection, revealing a higher prevalence among stroke patients, particularly associated with age and hypertension. Further research is needed to fully understand their complex relationship and develop better management strategies for cerebrovascular diseases, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Study Region: Central Rift Valley (CRV) region, Ethiopia. Study Focus: The study aims to investigate the spatiotemporal change in lake water surface extents over 35 years (1986–2020) and identify potential causes. Three alternative multispectral water indices—Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Automatic Water Extraction Index (AWEI), and Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI)—derived from Landsat sensors (TM, ETM+, OLI) were utilized to extract and analyze the lake surface area. The Mann-Kendall correlation was applied to examine whether hydro-meteorological and anthropogenic variables are possible causes for changes. New Hydrological Insights for the Region: MNDWI outperforms other indices with over 96 % accuracy in mapping lake surface area. Abstract Unlike other growth stages of wheat, very few studies on drought tolerance have been done at the seedling stage, and this is due to the complexity and sensitivity of this stage to drought stress resulting from climate change. As a result, the drought tolerance of wheat seedlings is poorly understood and very few genes associated with drought tolerance at this stage were identified. To address this challenge, a set of 172 spring wheat genotypes representing 20 different countries was evaluated under drought stress at the seedling stage. Drought stress was applied on all tested genotypes by water withholding for 13 days. Two types of traits, namely morphological and physiological traits were scored on the leaves of all tested genotypes. Genome‐wide association study (GWAS) is one of the effective genetic analysis methods that was used to identify target single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and candidate genes for later use in marker‐assisted selection. The tested plant materials were genotyped using 25k Infinium iSelect array (25K) (herein after it will be identified as 25K) (for 172 genotypes) and genotyping‐by‐sequencing (GBS) (for 103 genotypes), respectively. The results of genotyping revealed 21,093 25K and 11,362 GBS‐SNPs, which were used to perform GWAS analysis for all scored traits. The results of GWAS revealed that 131 and 55 significant SNPs were controlling morphological and physiological traits, respectively. Moreover, a total of eight and seven SNP markers were found to be associated with more than one morphological and physiological trait under drought stress, respectively. Remarkably, 10 significant SNPs found in this study were previously reported for their association with drought tolerance in wheat. Out of the 10 validated SNP markers, four SNPs were associated with drought at the seedling stage, while the remaining six SNPs were associated with drought stress at the reproductive stage. Moreover, the results of gene enrichment revealed 18 and six pathways as highly significant biological and molecular pathways, respectively. The selection based on drought‐tolerant alleles revealed 15 genotypes with the highest number of different drought‐tolerant alleles. These genotypes can be used as candidate parents in future breeding programs to produce highly drought‐tolerant genotypes with high genetic diversity. Our findings in this study provide novel markers and useful information on the genetic basis of drought tolerance at early growth stages.

Abstract Despite the high prevalence of primary headaches, the role of food in modifying clinical characteristics among migraine patients is often overlooked. The aim is to detect the correlation between adopting unhealthy dietary habits and migraine severity and identify foods that have a greater chance of triggering specific subtypes of migraine. The present study was a cross-sectional analytical study that was conducted at Kasralainy Hospital, Cairo University, headache clinic at Alexandria University Hospital, and Al-Azhar University Hospitals from January to June 2020. We included 124 patients fulfilling the ICHD-3 criteria for migraine. A full clinical profile for migraine headaches was reported using a headache sheet applied to the Al-Azhar University headache unit. A nutritionist obtained data collected about dietary habits using many reliable scales and questionnaires such as food frequently sheets questionnaire. Logistic regression and Pearson correlation coefficients have been used to identify foods that are more likely to be associated with increased clinical features of migraine. Our participants reported that the fried meat, fried chicken, processed meats, fava beans, falafel, aged cheese “Pottery salted cheese” and “Rummy cheese”, salted-full fatty cheese “Damietta cheese”, citrus fruits, tea, coffee, soft drinks, nuts, pickles, chocolate, canned foods, sauces, ice cream, smoked herring, in addition to the stored food in the refrigerator for many days were significantly associated with the diagnosis of chronic migraine CM compared to episodic migraine (EM). Margarine, pickles, and smoked herring were significantly associated with the diagnosis of migraine with aura (MA) compared to migraine without aura (MO). Adopting unhealthy eating habits was a more prevalent dietary consumption pattern among people with chronic migraines compared to those with episodic migraine.

Background: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is detected in 40% of patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). During latency, EBV induces epigenetic alterations to the host genome and decreases the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins. The present study aimed to evaluate the expression levels of mRNA molecules and the end product of proteins for the JAK/STAT and NF-κB pathways, and their association with clinicopathological and prognostic parameters in patients with EBV-positive and -negative classical Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL).Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted from 2017 to 2022 at the Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig University Hospital (Zagazig, Egypt). Biopsy samples of 64 patients with CHL were divided into EBV-positive and EBV-negative groups. Abstract Development of nano-enabled fertilizers from green waste is one of the effective options to enhance global agricultural productions and minimize environmental pollution. In this study, novel, eco-friendly and cost-effective nano- enabled fertilizers (NEF) were synthesized using the planetary ball milling procedure. The NEF (nDPF1and nDPF2) were prepared by impregnation of nanostructured date palm pits (nDPP) with (KH2PO4 + MgO) at 1:1 and 3:1 (w/w) ratios respectively. The nDPP, nDPF1 and nDPF2 were extensively characterized. The produced nano-fertilizers enhanced soil water retention capacity with nDPF2 being the most effective. The water retention capacity of nDPF2 treated soil was 5.6 times higher than that of soil treated with conventional fertilizers. In addition, the nDPF2 exhibited superior sustained lower release rates of P, K and Mg nutrients for longer release periods in comparison with the conventional fertilizers. For instance, P cumulative release percentages from conventional fertilizers, nDPF1 and nDPF2 in soil reached 22.41%, 10.82 and 8.9% respectively within 384 h. Findings from FTIR and XPS analyses suggested that hydrogen bonding and ligand exchange were the main interaction mechanisms of PO4-K-Mg ions with nDPP surface. The released kinetics data of the NEF revealed that power function was the best suitable model to describe the kinetics of P, K and Mg release data from NEF in water and soil. Pot study ascertained that the nano-enabled fertilizers (nDPF1 and nDPF2) significantly promoted biomass production and nutrient uptake of maize plants as compared to commercial fertilizer treated plants. The present work demonstrated the potential of NEF to increase nutrients uptake efficiency, mitigate moisture retention problem in arid soils and reduce nutrients loss through leaching and safeguard the environment. Abstract Continuum robots are complex structures that require sophisticated modeling and control methods to achieve accurate position and motion tracking along desired trajectories. They are highly coupled, nonlinear systems with multiple degrees of freedom that pose a significant challenge for conventional approaches. In this paper, we propose a system dynamic model based on the Euler–Lagrange formulation with the assumption of piecewise constant curvature (PCC), where we accounts for the elasticity and gravity effects of the continuum robot. We also develop and apply a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to optimize the parameters of our developed controllers: an inverse dynamic proportional integral derivative (PID) controller and an inverse dynamic fuzzy logic controller (FLC), where we use the integral time of absolute error (ITAE) as the objective function for the PSO algorithm. We validate our proposed model and optimized controllers through different designed trajectories, simulated using our developed unique animated MATLAB simulation. The results show that the PSO-PID controller improves the rise time, overshoot percentage, and settling time by 16.3%, 31.1%, and 64.9%, respectively, compared to the PID controller without PSO. The PSO-FLC controller shows the best performance among all controllers, with a settling time of 0.7 s and a rise time of 0.4 s, leading to the highest level of precision in trajectory tracking. The ITAE error for the PSO-FLC controller is 11.4% and 29.9% lower than that of the PSO-PID and FLC controllers, respectively.

It is the best to clarify the physical finding, detect a high-risk infant and monitoring DDH to be observed or treated Objectives:Ultrasound has provided increased accuracy in comparison to the clinical and radiographic examinations which has been the accepted techniques for evaluating the hip in the first year of life Patients and methods: The current study was aretrospective study conducted at qena university hospitalfrom 2019 to 2020.ultrasound machine used to obtain alpha angle , assessment of structural anatomy and hip joint stability. Results: right leg affection is represented in 25% for clinically suspected analyzed cases. Left leg represent 30% , both legs represent 40% . Conclusion: Ultrasonographic techniques include static assessment of morphologic features of the hip, as popularized in Europe by Graf and a dynamic evaluation, as developed by Harcke that assesses the hip for stability of the femoral head in the socket, as well as static anatomy. the use of ultrasonography is recommended as an adjunct to the clinical evaluation. It is the technique of choice for extract a physical finding,detect a high-risk infant and monitoring DDH to be observed or treated.

This research aims at determining and analysing the causes and consequences of desertification in the middle zone of Wadi Fatimah using satellite images, climatic data, and topographic maps. The climatic parameters such as temperature, rainfall, and global reference evapotranspiration (ET0) indicated common severe arid conditions in the study area. The CORONA images acquired in 1967 and 1979 along with the topographic map of 1971 helped define the initial morphologic features and anthropogenic regimes. Analysing the various spatial datasets implied that the inappropriate management of water resources has resulted in changes in the anthropogenic regimes in the middle zone of Wadi Fatimah. These changes have triggered a chain of desertification processes such as degradation of the vegetation biomass and wind activities. These processes have transformed 15.3 km2 of agricultural farms into abandoned lands. Nineteen km2 of bushes have disappeared as well. The degradation of both agricultural and natural vegetation has exposed soils to intense wind erosion that detaches, transports and deposits sand in areas of low elevations. Accordingly, sand accumulations have massively expanded from 16.4 km2, as monitored by 1967 CORONA images, to 40.8 km2, as monitored by SPOT in 2013. This research emphasises that the middle zone of Wadi Fatimah has been experiencing remarkable changes in its morphologic and environmental characteristics in response to serious desertification processes. These processes are strongly linked to many anthropogenic interventions. It became a necessity, then, to redefine, study and assess the various anthropogenic parameters and their relative roles in desertification processes to combat desertification hazards and enhance sustainable environmental context in the middle zone of Wadi Fatimah.

Panicum maximum is planted extensively in tropical and subtropical areas, due to its high-quality forage and high biomass yield. This study aims to assess the varied metabolic dynamics of P. maximum subject to different pollution-related wastewater levels, thus providing information for sustainable agriculture and soil restoration. We analyzed the primary and secondary metabolites in P. maximum subject to two different types of polluted wastewater (WW), compared to a control group. The alterations observed in the metabolite profiles were affected by several factors, including nutrient imbalances and oxidative stress induced by heavy metal accumulation. Initially, the increased nutrient availability stemming from wastewater treatment promoted plant growth; however, this positive effect was later diminished by the adverse impacts of heavy metals, which generated oxidative stress, resulting in metabolic disturbances and a decrease in the plant biomass. Importantly, the substantial increase in antioxidant enzymes, related to primary (e.g., sugars) and secondary metabolites (e.g., phenolics and flavonoids), underscores plants’ adaptive strategies to cope with stress. The increased biosynthesis of flavonoids and phenolic compounds is a protective mechanism against oxidative stress, which also improves the antimicrobial activity, following the activation of key biosynthetic pathways involved in their synthesis. These complex interactions among diverse metabolites suggest that plants exposed to polluted wastewater use various biochemical strategies to increase both their survival and defenses against pathogens. Collectively, these findings emphasize the significance of understanding how wastewater management practices can affect plant health, metabolic responses, and the broader implications for food safety and ecosystem stability.

The development of a photocathode based on a Pb(ii)-iodide/poly(1H-pyrrole) porous spherical (PbI2/P1HP PS) nanocomposite has been successfully achieved in the efficient production of H2 gas from Red Sea water. The distinguishable spherical and porous shapes of these nanocomposites are characterized by a minimum surface measuring approximately 25 nm. This structural configuration, coupled with the nanocomposite’s substantial light absorbance, results in a modest bandgap of 2.4 eV. This turns the nanocomposite into a highly promising candidate for renewable energy applications, particularly for H2 gas generation from natural sources like Red Sea water. The economic viability of the PbI2/P1HP PS nanocomposite, relying on a glass substrate, mass production, and straightforward fabrication techniques, adds to its promising profile for H2 gas evolution. The photocathode exhibits significant potential for H2 gas production, with a notable current density (J ph) value of 1.0 mA·cm−2 in a three-electrode cell configuration. The IPCE reaches 3.1%, reflecting the successful evolution of 24 µmol·h−1 10 cm2 of the photocathode. Importantly, the use of natural Red Sea water as an electrolyte underscores a key feature for H2 gas production: utilizing freely available natural resources. This aspect holds considerable promise for industrial applications, emphasizing the environmentally sustainable nature of the photocathode.

Water deficit is a critical obstacle that devastatingly impacts rice production, particularly in arid regions under current climatic fluctuations. Accordingly, it is decisive to reinforce the drought tolerance of rice by employing sustainable approaches to enhance global food security. The present study aimed at exploring the effect of exogenous application using different biostimulants on physiological, morphological, and yield attributes of diverse rice genotypes under water deficit and well-watered conditions in 2-year field trial. Three diverse rice genotypes (IRAT-112, Giza-178, and IR-64) were evaluated under well-watered (14400 m3/ha in total for the entire season) and water deficit (9170 m3/ha) conditions and were exogenously sprayed by nano-silicon, potassium sulfate, or proline. The results showed that drought stress substantially decreased all studied photosynthetic pigments, growth traits, and yield attributes compared to well-watered conditions. In contrast, antioxidant enzyme activities and osmoprotectants were considerably increased compared with those under well-watered conditions. However, the foliar application of nano-silicon, potassium sulfate, and proline substantially mitigated the deleterious effects of drought stress and markedly enhanced photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant enzyme activities, growth parameters, and yield contributing traits compared to untreated stressed control. Among the assessed treatments, foliar spray with nano-silicon or proline was more effective in promoting drought tolerance. The exogenous application of proline improved chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids by 21.4, 19.6 and 21.0% followed by nano-silicon treatment, which enhanced chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids by 21.1, 17.6 and 9.5% compared to untreated control. Besides, the application of proline demonstrated a superior improvement in the content of proline by 52.5% compared with the untreated control. Moreover, nano-silicon exhibited the maximum enhancement of catalase and peroxidase activity compared to the other treatments. The positive impacts of applied exogenously nano-silicon or proline significantly increased panicle length, number of panicles/plant, number of grains/panicle, fertility percentage, 1000-grain weight, panicle weight, and grain yield, compared to untreated plants under water deficit conditions. In addition, the physiological and agronomic performance of evaluated rice genotypes significantly contrasted under drought conditions. The genotype Giza-178 displayed the best performance under water deficit conditions compared with the other genotypes. Consequently, the integration of applied exogenously nano-silicon or proline with tolerant rice genotype as Giza-178 is an efficient approach to ameliorating drought tolerance and achieving agricultural sustainability under water-scarce conditions in arid environments.

Liver fibrosis is a disease with a great global health and economic burden. Existing data highlights itraconazole (ITRCZ) as a potentially effective anti-fibrotic therapy. However, ITRCZ effect is hindered by several limitations, such as poor solubility and bioavailability. This study aimed to formulate and optimize chitosan nanoparticles (Cht NPs) loaded with ITRCZ as a new strategy for managing liver fibrosis. ITRCZ-Cht NPs were optimized utilizing a developed 22 full factorial design. The optimized formula (F3) underwent comprehensive in vitro and in vivo characterization. In vitro assessments revealed that F3 exhibited an entrapment efficiency of 89.65% ± 0.57%, a 169.6 ± 1.77 nm particle size, and a zeta potential of +15.93 ± 0.21 mV. Furthermore, in vitro release studies indicated that the release of ITRCZ from F3 adhered closely to the first-order model, demonstrating a significant enhancement (p-value < 0.05) in cumulative release compared to plain ITRCZ suspension. This formula increased primary hepatocyte survival and decreased LDH activity in vitro. The in vivo evaluation of F3 in a rat model of liver fibrosis revealed improved liver function and structure. ITRCZ-Cht NPs displayed potent antifibrotic effects as revealed by the downregulation of TGF-β, PDGF-BB, and TIMP-1 as well as decreased hydroxyproline content and α-SMA immunoexpression. Anti-inflammatory potential was evident by reduced TNF-α and p65 nuclear translocation. These effects were likely ascribed to the modulation of Hedgehog components SMO, GLI1, and GLI2. These findings theorize ITRCZ-Cht NPs as a promising formulation for treating liver fibrosis. However, further investigations are deemed necessary.

The orexins, also referred to as hypocretins, are neuropeptides that originate from the lateral hypothalamus (LH) region of the brain. They are composed of two small peptides, orexin-A, and orexin-B, which are broadly distributed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. Orexins are recognized to regulate diverse functions, involving energy homeostasis, the sleep-wake cycle, stress responses, and reward-seeking behaviors. Additionally, it is suggested that orexin-A deficiency is linked to sleepiness and narcolepsy. The orexins bind to their respective receptors, the orexin receptor type 1 (OX1R) and type 2 (OX2R), and activate different signaling pathways, which results in the mediation of various physiological functions. Orexin receptors are widely expressed in different parts of the body, including the skin, muscles, lungs, and bone marrow. The expression levels of orexins and their receptors play a crucial role in apoptosis, which makes them a potential target for clinical treatment of various disorders. This article delves into the significance of orexins and orexin receptors in the process of apoptosis, highlighting their expression levels and their potential contributions to different diseases. The article offers an overview of the existing understanding of the orexin/receptor system and how it influences the regulation of apoptosis.

Climate change directly affects crop yields, which would cause more future food security crises. Ensemble global climate models (GCMs) combined with crop growth models are an effective method to project such impacts. In the current study, five criteria were used to pick out ten GCMs. Three types of efficiency criteria, namely root-mean-squared error (RMSE), Pearson’s correlation coefficient (R), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE), and bias (BISA) between predicted and observed temperature and precipitation, were used to evaluate and select the better-performing of the GCMs for the baseline period (1981–2010). Then, AquaCrop-GIS, driven by the downscaled projected climate data from the selected GCMs, was used to predict rice yields in the Nile River Delta (NRD) region under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) scenarios (SSP2–4.5 and SSP5–8.5) and four prediction periods (2021–2099). Four statistical indicators, namely, prediction error (Pe), normalized RMSE (RMSEn), index of agreement (Dindex), and coefficient of determination (R2), were used to evaluate the performance of AquaCrop-GIS. Our results showed that five GCMs, including the BCC-CSM2-MR, CMCC-ESM2, INM-CM5–0, MRI-ESM2–0, and UKESM1–0-LL, had better performances in simulating temperature and precipitation (0.81 ≤ RMSE ≤ 4.77, 0.30 ≤ NSE ≤ 0.97, and 0.57 ≤ R ≤ 0.99). In addition, AquaCrop-GIS showed excellent accuracy in simulating rice yields and predicted that, without CO2 effects, rice yields would increase by 2.19% and 4.23% under SSP2–4.5 and by 0.72% and 0.30% under SSP5–8.5 during the 2030s and 2050s, respectively. However, in the 2070s and 2090s, rice yields would decline by 7.20% and 9.0% under SSP2–4.5 and by 23.34% and 34.24% under SSP5–8.5 during the 2070s and 2090s, respectively. With CO2 effects, rice yields would rise by 14.49%, 24.97%, 15.96%, and 16.93% under SSP2–4.5 and by 14.33%, 26.22%, 8.06%, and 1.61% under SSP5–8.5 during the 2030s, 2050s, 2070s, and 2090s, respectively. Regardless of uncertainties and limitations, our findings are beneficial for farmers and policymakers to develop appropriate management strategies to improve rice yields in Egypt.

Background: Bronchial asthma is a persistent inflammatory respiratory condition that restricts the passage of air and causes hyperresponsiveness. Chronic asthma can be classified into three categories: mild, moderate, and severe. Remodeling took place as the extracellular matrix accumulated in the walls of the airways. Inflammation occurs as a result of the damage caused by matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) to basement membrane type IV collagen. The severity of asthma may be associated with miR-196a2. The objective of our study was to investigate the underlying mechanisms and clinical relevance of miR-196a2 and MMP-2 serum levels in relation to the severity of asthma. Methods: This study recruited 85 controls and 95 asthmatics classified as mild, moderate, or severe. Expression of miR-196a2 was measured by quantitative reverse transcriptase PCR. Using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), MMP-2, IL-6, and total immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels in the serum of asthmatics of various grades were compared to a control group. MMP-2's diagnostic and prognostic potential was determined using ROC curve analysis. This study also measured blood Eosinophils and PFTs. We examined MMP-2's connections with IgE, blood Eosinophils, and PFTs. Results: The current investigation found that miR-196a2 expression was significantly higher in the control group than in asthmatic patients as a whole. The study found that severe asthmatics had higher MMP-2, IL-6, and IgE serum levels than healthy controls. We identified the MMP-2 serum concentration cutoff with great sensitivity and specificity. Significant relationships between MMP-2 serum level and miR-196a2 expression in the patient group with severe asthmatics were found. The MMP-2, IL-6, and IgE serum levels were considerably higher in mild, moderate, and severe asthmatics than controls. The miR-196a2 expression and MMP-2 serum concentration correlated positively with IgE and blood eosinophils % and negatively with all lung function tests in the asthmatic patient group.Conclusion: the study revealed that the elevated miR-196a2 expression and serum concentration of MMP-2, IL-6, and IgE associated with elevated blood eosinophils % is associated with pathophysiology and degree of asthma severity. The miR-196a2 expression and MMP-2 serum concentration have a promising diagnostic and prognostic ability in bronchial asthma.

Researchers are depending more than ever on remote sensing techniques to monitor and assess the agricultural water status, as well as to estimate crop water usage or crop actual evapotranspiration. In the current work, normal and stressed baselines for irrigated wheat genotypes were developed in an arid part of the Sohag governorate, Egypt, using infrared thermometry in conjunction with weather parameters. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design in the normal and drought stress conditions based on three replicates using ten bread wheat genotypes (G1–G10), including five accessions, under drought stress. A standard Class-A-Pan in the experimental field provided the daily evaporation measurements (mm/day), which was multiplied by a pan factor of 0.8 and 0.4 for normal and stressed conditions, respectively. The relationship between the vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and canopy-air temperature differences (Tc − Ta) was plotted under upper (fully stressed) and lower baseline (normal) equations. Accordingly, the crop water stress indexes (CWSIs) for the stressed and normal baselines for wheat genotypes were developed. Additionally, the intercept (b) and the slope (a) of the lower baseline equation were computed for different genotypes. The results indicate that, before applying irrigation water, the CWSI values were high in both growing seasons and under all irrigation regimes. After that, the CWSI values declined. G10 underwent stress treatment, which produced the greatest CWSI (0.975). Conversely, the G6 condition that received well-watered irrigation yielded the lowest result (−0.007). When compared to a well-watered one, the CWSI values indicated a trend toward rising stress. There existed an inverse link between the CWSI and grain yield (GY); that is, a lower CWSI resulted in better plant water conditions and a higher GY. Under standard conditions, the wheat’s highest GY was recorded in G2, 8.36 Ton/ha and a WCSI of 0.481. In contrast, the CWSI result for the stress treatment was 0.883, indicating a minimum GY of 5.25 Ton/ha. The Water Use Efficiency (WUE) results demonstrated that the stress irrigation regime produced a greater WUE value than the usual one. This study makes a significant contribution by investigating the techniques that would allow CWSI to be used to estimate irrigation requirements, in addition to determining the irrigation time.

Abstract Background Opioids, defined as medicines that stimulate opioid receptors, are primarily used in the treatment of moderate to severe pain. They induce central nervous system (CNS) adverse effects. This study aimed to assess the effect of opioids on brain electrical activity, the effect of opioids on cognitive functions, and corroborate whether there was any correlation between changes in brain electrical activity and cognitive functions that may do in opioid addicts. Methods This cross-sectional case–control study was performed on 80 cases (divided into two groups 40 cases with tramadol use disorders and 40 cases with heroin use disorders) and 40 age-/sex-matched healthy control. All subjects were subordinated to neuropsychiatric evaluation, assessment of opioid use complaint through history from the case and his relatives, substance monitoring in urine, medicine abuse screening test (DAST), electroencephalography (EEG), and cognitive assessment by Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA). Results Opioid dependence convinced global cognitive function impairment, specific cognitive disciplines impairment that included visual-conceptual, visual-motor tracking, visual-constructional skills, language function, attention, memory, and orientation. Additionally, affection of the brain’s electrical activities with significant changes compared with control. Comparison of cognitive impairment substantiated by lower cognitive scores in relation to abnormal EEG changes among studied case groups revealed significant differences. Conclusions Opioid abusers had a significant impairment of cognitive functions and EEG changes with a significant correlation between changes in brain electrical activity and impairment of cognitive functions.

Abstract Background Essential tremor (ET) is a prevalent movement disorder that may be linked to neurodegenerative changes. It is marked by a mix of motor and non-motor symptoms, which include disturbances in the autonomic nervous system. Aim of the study: We aimed to assess autonomic dysfunction in individuals with essential tremor. Thirty patients with essential tremor (Group 1) and 30 age and sex-matched healthy subjects as the control group (Group 2) were recruited. Comprehensive medical and neurological examinations were conducted on all participants, followed by electrophysiological assessments of autonomic function, including heart rate variability (HRV) tests (E/I ratio, Valsalva ratio, 30:15 ratio), adrenergic tests (blood pressure responses to active standing and sustained hand grip), and sympathetic skin response (SSR) tests. Finally, the results of these tests were classified according to the Ewing classification of autonomic failure. Results: The study revealed significant differences between ET patients and the control group. Heart rate variability tests showed a marked difference between the groups. Adrenergic tests, measuring sympathetic innervation, also displayed a significant difference. The sudomotor function test exhibited noteworthy differences in onset latencies and amplitudes in the palm and sole, with ET patients showing prolonged onset latencies and decreased amplitudes. Moreover, the study found a significant correlation between disease severity and autonomic function test results and the Ewing score. Conclusion: The study highlights the presence of autonomic dysfunction in essential tremor patients, with disease severity being associated with the level of autonomic affection, as evidenced by various autonomic function tests and the Ewing score.

Background: Articaine has been used as a local anesthetic for dental procedures, but studies about articaine used as a local anesthetic for regional block after thoracic surgeries are limited.Aim of the Study: Our study compares the postoperative analgesic efficacy of articaine 2% and bupivacaine 0.25% through erector spinae block for after thoracic surgeries.Patients and Methods: All patients were divided into two groups. Group I [20 patients] [erector spinae block with bupivacine 0.25%] was performed before extubation with an injection of 30 ml of 0.25% bupivacine. Group II [20 patients] [erector spinae block with articaine 2%] was performed before extubation with an injection of 30 ml of articaine 2%.Results: As regard the visual analogue scale at 8 h and 12 h, postoperatively, there was significant variance among the 2 groups [p value=0.045, p value=0.002]. Also, with regard to first-rescue analgesia and the total dose of morphine, there was significant variance among the 2 groups [p value=0.006, p value=0.02].Conclusion: Articaine is a reliable local anesthetic agent when compared to bupivacaine for regional block after thoracic surgeries.

The concept of competitive advantage serves as a guiding principle for establishments within the food processing industry as they strive to attain high quality standards. The pursuit of a competitive economy aligns with Egypt's Vision 2030, aimed at fostering economic growth through digital transformation. Developing strategies to enhance the competitive edge of food sector products is of paramount importance. The findings revealed that the average value of food industry products reached approximately 12.99 billion Egyptian pounds between 2000 and 2020, constituting about 1.36% of the domestic product. This sector exhibited an annual growth rate of 3.90%. Furthermore, the performance of the food sector is positively influenced by effective leadership and superior quality. Among the factors analyzed, motivation and technology, followed by responsiveness, accounted for about 32.16%, 14.28%, and 13.68% of the positive impact, respectively. Strategic planning and leadership accomplishments were also identified as positive contributors. Innovation, development, and strategic orientation explained around 26.90%, 19.62%, and 14.74% of the impact, respectively. Operational management practices play a favorable role in enhancing production flexibility and managing uncertainties. They contribute approximately 22.85%, 21.19%, and 20.28% of the overall effect. Supply chain management was another area with a positive influence. Contracting, followed by supply flexibility and electronic supply, exhibited impacts of roughly 27.72%, 22.11%, and 12.39%, respectively. Effective management of marketing services showcased positive effects as well. The foremost impact came from marketing services, marketing flexibility, and marketing strategies, contributing around 23.17%, 20.43%, and 17.99%, respectively.

Abstract Background The susceptibility of pests and natural enemies to conventional insecticides is a critical element in judging the success of integrated pest management programs implementing biological control as a tactic. In this study, the susceptibility of the cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to an organophosphorus insecticide (chlorpyrifos) and the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana was evaluated through field applications during two successive sugar beet seasons. The populations of the coccinellid, chrysopid, and formicid predators were estimated to indicate pesticide risk assessment strategy. The root and sugar yields were compared during the whole experiment to emphasize the impact of both control strategies on the pre-harvest loss in this strategic crop. Results Results indicated that over the course of the two seasons of the investigation, chlorpyrifos significantly reduced the population density of S. littoralis and its associated predators. It showed a detrimental effect on S. littoralis larval population than untreated areas, causing an overall reduction of 97 and 92% during the 1st and 2nd seasons, respectively. The biopesticide based on entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana caused an overall reduction of S. littoralis, reaching 96 and 65% during the 1st and 2nd seasons, respectively. Meanwhile, B. bassiana slightly affects the population of predators compared to insecticide-free areas, so it was recommended for application in sugar beet fields without providing considerable risk to the associated insect predators. The sugar beetroot production and its sugar content increased significantly in both treatments during the two growing seasons compared to non-treated plots. Conclusion Chlorpyrifos is not recommended for pest control; instead, B. bassiana is considered an effective biopesticide in the Egyptian sugar beet fields infested with S. littoralis as part of an integrated pest management program. Their effect was direct through reducing pest population and indirectly increasing the sugar beetroot production and increasing its total sugar content. Hence, both the sugar beetroot quality and quantity were improved favoring the microbial agent over the chemical insecticide in application for mitigating the chemical hazards toward the associated predators.

Abstract The identification and prognosis of the potential for developing Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) in healthy individuals is a vital aspect of disease management. Accessing the comprehensive health data on CVD currently available within hospital databases holds significant potential for the early detection and diagnosis of CVD, thereby positively impacting disease outcomes. Therefore, the incorporation of machine learning methods holds significant promise in the advancement of clinical practice for the management of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs). By providing a means to develop evidence-based clinical guidelines and management algorithms, these techniques can eliminate the need for costly and extensive clinical and laboratory investigations, reducing the associated financial burden on patients and the healthcare system. In order to optimize early prediction and intervention for CVDs, this study proposes the development of novel, robust, effective, and efficient machine learning algorithms, specifically designed for the automatic selection of key features and the detection of early-stage heart disease. The proposed Catboost model yields an F1-score of about 92.3% and an average accuracy of 90.94%. Therefore, Compared to many other existing state-of-art approaches, it successfully achieved and maximized classification performance with higher percentages of accuracy and precision.

Eyelid evaluation was recorded, including laterality, previous surgical technique used, possible trichiasis etiology, abnormality of the lid margin, tarsal plate consistency (shrinkage or loosening), skin fold overhanging, laxity of the pretarsal skin, margin reflex distance 1 (MRD1), lagophthalmos, and lid retraction. The success rate was assessed at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months postoperative.Results: The success rate was 97.2% in the third month, which decreased significantly to 92.3% in the 6th month and 90.2% in the 9th month (P = 0.01, and 0.001 respectively). In the 9th month, we had fourteen failed cases. All of them were submitted for a second intervention. Three underwent electrolysis, four cases underwent re-internal bulb extirpation, four cases underwent the same procedure, and three cases underwent epilation. The success of the failed cases after the second intervention was significantly associated with the type of reintervention (P = 0.03), in which all of them succeed except two cases that underwent epilation. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the mean recurrence time in our study was 6.8 months (95% CI = 5.8– 7.7 months).Conclusion: This study showed the combination of ALR with blepharoplasty, suprasternal fixation, and cauterization or internal bulb extirpation of posteriorly located lashes procedure resulted in a high success rate in patients with any form of UCE with no increase in incidence or degree of lagophthalmos associated with UCE.Keywords: anterior lamellar recession, ALR, blepharoplasty, cicatricial entropion, suprasternal fixation

The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of family upbringing methods on the formation of health awareness in children by examining the correlation between family upbringing methods and dimensions of health awareness. The research adopts a correlational methodology and includes the development of a scale for family upbringing methods consisting of 20 items distributed among four styles and a scale for health awareness consisting of 15 items distributed among three dimensions. These scales are applied to a random sample of 80 male and female respondents. One of the key findings of the research is the lack of a statistically significant correlation between authoritarian, democratic, and neglectful family upbringing styles and the level of health awareness in children. However, there was a statistically significant relationship between the overprotective style of upbringing and the level of health awareness in children who are subjected to it. The results also showed no statistically significant differences in the sample's responses based on variables such as gender, age, and birth order within the family. Abstract Background Emergence of multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, coupled with the pathogen’s versatile virulence factors, lead to high morbidity and mortality rates. The current study investigated the potential association between the antibiotic resistance and the production of virulence factors among P. aeruginosa clinical isolates collected from Alexandria Main University Hospital in Egypt. We also evaluated the potential of the phenotypic detection of virulence factors to reflect virulence as detected by virulence genes presence. The role of alginate in the formation of biofilms and the effect of ambroxol, a mucolytic agent, on the inhibition of biofilm formation were investigated. Results A multi-drug resistant phenotype was detected among 79.8% of the isolates. The most predominant virulence factor was biofilm formation (89.4%), while DNase was least detected (10.6%). Pigment production was significantly associated with ceftazidime susceptibility, phospholipase C production was significantly linked to sensitivity to cefepime, and DNase production was significantly associated with intermediate resistance to meropenem. Among the tested virulence genes, lasB and algD showed the highest prevalence rates (93.3% and 91.3%, respectively), while toxA and plcN were the least detected ones (46.2% and 53.8%, respectively). Significant association of toxA with ceftazidime susceptibility, exoS with ceftazidime and aztreonam susceptibility, and plcH with piperacillin-tazobactam susceptibility was observed. There was a significant correlation between alkaline protease production and the detection of algD, lasB, exoS, plcH and plcN; pigment production and the presence of algD, lasB, toxA and exoS; and gelatinase production and the existence of lasB, exoS and plcH. Ambroxol showed a high anti-biofilm activity (5% to 92%). Quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction showed that alginate was not an essential matrix component in P. aeruginosa biofilms. Conclusions High virulence coupled with the isolates’ multi-drug resistance to commonly used antimicrobials would increase morbidity and mortality rates among P. aeruginosa infections. Ambroxol that displayed anti-biofilm action could be suggested as an alternative treatment option, yet in vivo studies are required to confirm these findings. We recommend active surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and virulence determinant prevalence for better understanding of coregulatory mechanisms.

Abstract Aerobic rice cultivation progresses water productivity, and it can save almost 50% of irrigation water compared to lowland rice with the appropriate development of genotypes and management practices. Two field trials were conducted during 2020, and 2021 seasons to determine the validation of different rice varieties under aerobic cultivation based on their plant defense system, physio-morphological traits, stress indices, grain yield, and water productivity. The experiments were designed in a split-plot design with four replications. Two planting methods, transplanting and aerobic cultivation, were denoted as the main plots, and ten rice genotypes were distributed in the subplots. The results revealed that the planting method varied significantly in all measured parameters. The transplanting method with well watering had the highest value of all measured parameters except leaf rolling, membrane stability index, antioxidant, proline, and the number of unfilled grains. EHR1, Giza179 and GZ9399 as well as A22 genotypes a chief more antioxidant defense system that operated under aerobic conditions. Giza179, EHR1, GZ9399, and Giza178 showed high cell membrane stability and subsequently high validation under such conditions, and also showed efficiency in decreasing water consumption and improving water use efficiency. In conclusion, this study proves that Giza179, EHR1, GZ9399, Giza178, and A22 are valid genotypes for aerobic conditions.

Background: This study assessed the potential cost-effectiveness of high (80–100%) vs low (21–35%) fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) at preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) after abdominal surgery in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Methods: Decision-analytic models were constructed using best available evidence sourced from unbundled data of an ongoing pilot trial assessing the effectiveness of high FiO2, published literature, and a cost survey in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Effectiveness was measured as percentage of SSIs at 30 days after surgery, a healthcare perspective was adopted, and costs were reported in US dollars ($). Results: High FiO2 may be cost-effective (cheaper and effective). In Nigeria, the average cost for high FiO2 was $216 compared with $222 for low FiO2 leading to a −$6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: −$13 to −$1) difference in costs. In India, the average cost for high FiO2 was $184 compared with $195 for low FiO2 leading to a −$11 (95% CI: −$15 to −$6) difference in costs. In South Africa, the average cost for high FiO2 was $1164 compared with $1257 for low FiO2 leading to a −$93 (95% CI: −$132 to −$65) difference in costs. The high FiO2 arm had few SSIs, 7.33% compared with 8.38% for low FiO2, leading to a −1.05 (95% CI: −1.14 to −0.90) percentage point reduction in SSIs. Conclusion: High FiO2 could be cost-effective at preventing SSIs in the three countries but further data from large clinical trials are required to confirm this.

Abstract Nannochloropsis oculata (N. oculata) is a marine microalga containing bioactive compounds and a high omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (ω-3 PUFAs). Therefore, it is very promising for nutraceutical and the functional food industry applications. Three groups of Nile tilapia (forty-five fish/group) were fed on basal diets or diets containing 5% (N5) or 10% (N10) of the microalga N. oculata for seven weeks. Fish growth performance, proximate composition, and lipid (fatty acids/ FAs and lipoproteins) profile were estimated. In addition, the expression pattern of some lipid metabolism and immune-relevant genes were assessed. An enhancement in whole body crude protein and growth indices of Nile tilapia was observed on both the supplemented groups N5 and N10. Higher levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL); and lower levels of the low-density lipoproteins (LDL) were evident in both supplemented groups, while the cholesterol and triglycerides (TG) levels were similar among groups. Ω-3 PUFAs were the significant FAs profile of tilapia fed on N. oculata-supplemented diets in terms of eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and n3/n6 ratio. Concerning the gene expression pattern, heat-shock protein70, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase, and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) were elevated significantly in both supplemented groups. IL-10 is only upregulated in the N10 group. The lipid metabolism-related gene expression showed downregulation of only fatty acid synthase (FAS) in both supplemented groups, with no statistical changes in Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα). Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), and the apoptotic related genes [caspase3 and Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)] showed insignificant changes among groups. The histopathological examination of the intestine, liver, and spleen supports our findings and confirms the benefits and safeness of N. oculata dietary inclusion. Collectively, N. oculata is a very promising nutraceutical for improving fish health and sustainability of aquaculture production. Graphical Abstract

Objective: To investigate the relation between sleep quality and glycemic control among type 2 diabetic patients.

Abstract The current investigation deals with the simple and ecological synthesis of CaO, MgO, CaTiO3, and MgTiO3 for the photocatalytic dilapidation of rhodamine B dye. CaO was procured from chicken eggshell waste by calcination process, while MgO was produced by solution combustion method using urea as a fuel source. Furthermore, CaTiO3 and MgTiO3 were synthesized through an easy and simple solid-state method by mixing thoroughly the synthesized CaO or MgO with TiO2 before calcination at 900 °C. XRD and EDX investigations confirmed the phase formation of the materials. Moreover, FTIR spectra revealed the existence of Ca–Ti–O, Mg–Ti–O, and Ti–O which resembles the chemical composition of the proposed materials. SEM micrographs revealed that the surface of CaTiO3 is rougher with relatively dispersed particles compared to MgTiO3, reflecting a higher surface area of CaTiO3. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy investigations indicated that the synthesized materials can act as photocatalysts under UV illumination. Accordingly, CaO and CaTiO3 effectively degraded rhodamine B dye within 120 min with a photodegradation activity of 63% and 72%, respectively. In contrast, the photocatalytic degradation activity of MgO and MgTiO3 was much lower, since only 21.39 and 29.44% of the dye were degraded, respectively after 120 min of irradiation. Furtheremore, the photocatalytic activity of the mixture from both Ca and Mg titanates was 64.63%. These findings might be valuable for designing potential and affordable photocatalysts for wastewater purification.

Comprehension of the long-term effects of irrigation on basic soil characteristics and quality is essential for sustainable land management and agricultural production, particularly in arid regions where water availability is limited. This study aimed to investigate long-term irrigation effects on soil quality, soil organic carbon (SOC), and nitrogen (N) stocks in the arid lands of Egypt. Seventy soil samples were collected and analyzed to determine various soil properties. A soil quality index (SQI), SOC, and N stocks were computed. ANOVA and PCA analyses were used to identify significant differences between alluvial soils in the southwest part of the investigated area and coastal marine soils in the northeast of the study area. The results demonstrated that most of the studied soil parameters had significantly greater values in alluvial compared to coastal marine soils. Long-term irrigation led to an 8.00% increase in SOC and 7.22% increase in N stocks compared to coastal marine soils production. Furthermore, a 39.53% increase was found in the SQI upon long-term irrigation practice. These results suggest that shifting from rain-fed in coastal marine areas to irrigated production systems in alluvial fields can improve soil quality, SOC, and N stocks. Therefore, further studies are required to investigate the impact of additional factors, such as irrigation method and salinity status of sub-surface soil layers, to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainable land use.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory disease of the colorectal area that demonstrates a dramatically increasing incidence worldwide. This study provides novel insights into the capacity of the exogenous β-hydroxybutyrate and ketogenic diet (KD) consumption to alleviate dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced UC in rats. Remarkably, both interventions attenuated disease activity and colon weight-to-length ratio, and improved macro and microstructures of the damaged colon. Importantly, both β-hydroxybutyrate and KD curbed the DSS-induced aberrant NLRP3 inflammasome activation as observed in mRNA and protein expression analysis. Additionally, inhibition of the NLRP3/NGSDMD-mediated pyroptosis was detected in response to both regimens. In parallel, these modalities attenuated caspase-1 and its associated consequences of IL-1β and IL-18 overproduction. They also mitigated apoptosis as indicated by the inactivation of caspase-3. The anti-inflammatory effects of BHB and KD were confirmed by the reported decline in the levels of inflammatory markers including MPO, NFκB, IL-6, and TNF-α. Moreover, these interventions exhibited antioxidative properties by reducing ROS production and improving antioxidative enzymes. Their effectiveness in mitigating UC was also evident in the renovation of normal intestinal epithelial barrier function, as shown by correcting the discrepancies in the levels of tight junction proteins ZO-1, OCLN, and CLDN5. Furthermore, their effects on the intestinal microbiota homeostasis were investigated. In terms of autophagy, exogenous β-hydroxybutyrate upregulated BECN-1 and downregulated p62, which may account for its superiority over KD in attenuating colonic damage. In conclusion, this study provides experimental evidence supporting the potential therapeutic use of β-hydroxybutyrate or β-hydroxybutyrate-boosting regimens in UC.
