8. Comparison of Two Different Mindfulness Interventions among Health Care Students in Finland: A Randomised Controlled Trial

Abstract

We investigated the short- and long-term effects of two different evidence-based mindfulness training on students' stress and well-being. A randomised controlled trial with three measurement points (baseline, post-intervention, and 4 months post-intervention) was conducted among undergraduate students of medicine, dentistry, psychology, and logopaedics at the University of Helsinki. The participants were randomly assigned into three groups: (1) face-to-face mindfulness training based on the Mindfulness Skills for Students course (n = 40), (2) a web-based Student Compass program using Mindfulness and Acceptance and Commitment therapy (n = 22), and (3) a control group that received mental health support as usual (n = 40). The primary outcome was psychological distress measured using the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation Outcome Measure (CORE-OM). Secondary outcomes included hair cortisol concentrations and a wide range of well-being indicators. Psychological distress increased in all the groups from baseline to post-intervention, but significantly less so in the intervention groups than in the control group. At 4-month follow-up, were found no differences between the primary outcomes of the control and intervention groups, but the participants who continued practising mindfulness at least twice a week were less stressed than the others. Our results suggest that participating in a mindfulness course may mitigate health care students' psychological distress during the academic year, but only if the participants continue practising mindfulness at least twice a week.

10. Individual Differences Limit Predicting Well-being and Productivity Using Software Repositories: A Longitudinal Industrial Study

Abstract

Reports of poor work well-being and fluctuating productivity in software engineering have been reported in both academic and popular sources. Understanding and predicting these issues through repository analysis might help manage software developers' well-being. Our objective is to link data from software repositories, that is commit activity, communication, expressed sentiments, and job events, with measures of well-being obtained with a daily experience sampling questionnaire. To achieve our objective, we studied a single software project team for eight months in the software industry. Additionally, we performed semi-structured interviews to explain our results. The acquired quantitative data are analyzed with generalized linear mixed-effects models with autocorrelation structure. We find that individual variance accounts for most of the $R^2$ values in models predicting developers' experienced well-being and productivity. In other words, using software repository variables to predict developers' well-being or productivity is challenging due to individual differences. Prediction models developed for each developer individually work better, with fixed effects $R^2$ value of up to 0.24. The semi-structured interviews give insights into the well-being of software developers and the benefits of chat interaction. 17. Using Experience Sampling to link Software Repositories with Emotions and Work Well-Being

Abstract

Background: The experience sampling method studies everyday experiences of humans in natural environments. In psychology it has been used to study the relationships between work well-being and productivity. To our best knowledge, daily experience sampling has not been previously used in software engineering. Aims: Our aim is to identify links between software developers self-reported affective states and work well-being and measures obtained from software repositories. Method: We perform an experience sampling study in a software company for a period of eight months, we use logistic regression to link the well-being measures with development activities, i.e. number of commits and chat messages. Results: We find several significant relationships between questionnaire variables and software repository variables. To our surprise relationship between hurry and number of commits is negative, meaning more perceived hurry is linked with a smaller number of commits. We also find a negative relationship between social interaction and hindered work well-being. Conclusions: The negative link between commits and hurry is counter-intuitive and goes against previous lab-experiments in software engineering that show increased efficiency under time pressure. Abstract

During the past years, psychological diseases related to unhealthy work environments, such as burnouts, have drawn more and more public attention. One of the known causes of these affective problems is time pressure. In order to form a theoretical background for time pressure detection in software repositories, this paper combines interdisciplinary knowledge by analyzing 1270 papers found on Scopus database and containing terms related to time pressure. By clustering those papers based on their abstract, we show that time pressure has been widely studied across different fields, but relatively little in software engineering. From a literature review of the most relevant papers, we infer a list of testable hypotheses that we want to verify in future studies in order to assess the impact of time pressures on software developers mental health., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Aim Methods Results Conclusion Our aim was to fill a gap in the research about the prevalence of developmental coordination disorder (DCD) among internationally adopted children. We explored the prevalence of signs of DCD and the associations between those and behavioural problems six and 18 months after adoption.The data came from the ongoing Finnish Adoption Study 2 and this research focused on the international adoptions of children under 7 years of age between 2012 and 2016. Their motor development was tested with the Movement Assessment Battery for Children, Second Edition to identify DCD symptoms. Behavioural symptoms were measured using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Only children aged 3 years plus were tested.The 95 children (70% boys) arrived in Finland at a mean age of 3.3 years. Six months later, 35% of the 49 children who were tested had clinical DCD symptoms and this has fallen to 13% of 67 at 18 months. Symptoms at 6 months were associated with higher internalising CBCL scores at 18 months.DCD symptoms in internationally adopted children were double the rate in the general child population 18 months after adoption. Abstract

This article explores how authoritarianism as a factor in child‐rearing values (CRV) is associated with political orientation, party support, and policy preferences among voters and societal elites in the Nordic context, which is characterized by social trust and solidarity, feelings of affinity, and a modest degree of ideological polarization. Based on a representative citizen survey conducted in 2018 (n = 4,076) and an elite survey conducted in 2020 (n = 948) among Finnish political, administrative, advocacy, business, and influence elites, our findings suggest that authoritarianism in Finland mostly relates to culturally conservative, and less to economically conservative, political orientations. While authoritarianism is connected to policy preferences and political orientations on both cultural and economic dimensions, it has more relevance for preferences regarding cultural issues than economic ones. Our findings support the notion that authoritarianism plays a role in political orientation mainly in the cultural realm. Overall, our study indicates that authoritarianism as captured by the CRV scale might be a politically important underpinning among both citizens and societal elites also outside the U.S. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
