This article details how the FALKE research project (Fachspezifische Lehrerkompetenzen im Erklären; Engl.: subject-specific teacher competency in explaining) integrates 14 heterogeneous disciplines in order to empirically examine the didactic quality of teacher explanations in eleven school subjects by bringing together trans-, multi-, and interdisciplinary perspectives. In order to illustrate the academic landscape of the FALKE project we briefly outline the nature of the transdisciplinary German “Fachdidaktiken” (Engl.: subject-matter didactics, i.e., special academic disciplines of teaching and learning specific school subjects). The FALKE project required the willingness of all researchers from eleven participating subject-matter didactics to rely on both the concepts and the methods of educational sciences as an overarching research framework (transdisciplinary aspect). All researchers of subject-matter didactics had to develop a shared conceptual, methodological, and administrative framework in order to empirically investigate commonalities in and differences between “good explanations” across the range of school subjects represented (multidisciplinary aspect). The additional perspectives of researchers in speech science and linguistics proved fruitful in recognizing rhetorical and linguistic aspects of teacher explanations (interdisciplinary aspect). Data management and statistical analysis were provided by the discipline methods of educational sciences. Rather than reporting empirical results, we here discuss opportunities and challenges as well as the lessons learned from the FALKE project regarding cognitive-epistemic reasoning, communication, and organization.

This volume summarizes the monitoring activities and results at the ‘Chicken Creek’ catchment for the period 2005 to 2010. The development in all ecosystem compartments is assessed, classified, and compared to more mature systems with regard to functional relevance and succession stage. In a final synopsis, the whole catchment is evaluated with regard to ecosystem development and an outlook is given on the expected trends both in the short and the medium term. In diesem Band werden die Dauerbeobachtungen und ihre Ergebnisse im Einzugsgebiet "Hühnerwasser" im Zeitraum 2005 bis 2010 zusammengefasst. Die Entwicklung aller Ökosystemkompartimente wird abgeschätzt, eingeordnet und mit weiter entwickelten Systemen hinsichtlich funktioneller Relevanz und Sukzessionszustand verglichen. In einer abschließenden Zusammenfassung wird die ökosystemare Entwicklung des Gesamteinzugsgebietes bewertet und ein Ausblick auf die erwarteten kurz- und mittelfristigen Trends gegeben.

In this first volume of the series ‘Ecosystem Development’, the geographic situation of the artificial catchment 'Chicken Creek', its construction and fundamental structures, as well as an outline of the comprehensive monitoring program are introduced. Established in autumn 2005 thanks to financial support from the Brandenburg University of Technology and the State of Brandenburg itself, the monitoring program was set up in order to document the highly dynamic development of this initial-phase system and describe the newly emerging structures both qualitatively and quantitatively. The data provided by the central monitoring project can also be used as the fundamental basis for a number of other scientific projects. The objective of this series is to document this important research site, including the changes occurring during the ongoing initial stages of ecosystem development. Whereas this volume presents the site itself and the general concept of the monitoring investigations, the following volumes in the series will present the results gathered during each phase of the investigative period. In diesem ersten Band der Schriftenreihe "Ecosystem Development" werden die geographische Situation, der Bau und grundlegende Strukturen sowie das umfassende Monitoringprogramm im künstlichen Wassereinzugsgebiet "Hühnerwasser" vorgestellt. Im Herbst 2005 konnte mit finanzieller Unterstützung durch die BTU Cottbus und das Land Brandenburg das Monitoringprogramm eingerichtet werden, um die hoch dynamischen Entwicklungen dieses initialen Systems zu dokumentieren und die sich neu entwickelnden Strukturen sowohl qualitativ wie auch quantitativ zu beschreiben. Die durch das zentrale Monitoring gewonnenen Daten können als grundlegende Basis für zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Projekte genutzt werden. Das Ziel dieser Schriftenreihe ist die Dokumentation dieses wichtigen Forschungsgeländes mit seinen Veränderungen während der andauernden Initialphase der Ökosystementwicklung. Während dieser Band die Fläche selbst und das generelle Konzept der Monitoringuntersuchungen vorstellt, befassen sich die folgenden Bände der Reihe mit den Ergebnissen verschiedener Untersuchungszeiträume.
