3. Perceived Proxemic Distance and Instructional Videoconferencing: Impact on Student Performance and Attitude.

Abstract

A study examined instructional videoconferencing to determine the effects of manipulating the perceived proxemic distance between students and an on-screen instructor on students' recall and attitude response ratings. Subjects, 43 undergraduate students from a multi-section introductory public speaking course at a large midwestern university, were subjected to essentially the same videoconference experience, except that 22 were exposed to a shot content of 51.85% of the screen height taken up by the instructor's head height (the near group), and the other 21 exposed to a shot content of 14.81% of the screen height taken up by the instructor's head height (the far group). Subjects responded to a 10-item fill-in-the-blank instrument after the videoconference. Results indicated that the near group scored significantly higher than the far group. Findings suggest that a videoconferencing environment designed to create the impression of social distance may enhance the ability to recall information and positively affect attitudes concerning the videoconferencing experience; and that designers of mediated learning environments should consider the nonverbal communication construct of perceived proximal distance early in the design phase of course development. 4. Applying Cognitive Theories to Multimedia Instructional Designs.

Abstract

Noting that cognitive science has developed a number of theories relevant to learning and the development of thinking skills, this paper contains an attempt to broaden the limited application of cognitive science by developing four distinct categories of applicable cognitive theories for multimedia instructional design. The paper summarizes the four categories (organismic developmental, information processing, behavioristic, and contextualistic) to provide a more complete foundation from which to select an appropriate design philosophy. The paper then addresses how certain design features may appear in the context of computer-assisted instruction when built around the various cognitive theoretical stances. The paper concludes that contextualism (which incorporates the individual, the environment, and the system acting one upon the other) appears to hold the greatest promise for future research. Abstract

Percussion primer are used to ignite fixed ammunition propellant charges with a very high functional reliability. In order to achieve this high degree of reliability, extremely sensitive primary explosive compositions are selected as the initiating materials. Medium caliber ammunition percussion primers typically consist of lead styphnate and antimony sulfide. Although highly effective, these heavy metal compounds have been identified under 40 CFR 401.15 as toxic pollutants and should be replaced or eliminated. This project evaluated Metastable Intermolecular Composites (MIC) as potential replacements for the hazardous composition currently used in medium caliber ammunition percussion primers. MIC offers a non-toxic alternative to conventional military primers. Candidate MIC primers were evaluated in the laboratory for ignition characteristics and ballistically tested in 25mm cartridges for ammunition requirement conformance., The original document contains color images.

Abstract

This study develops a technology category framework to enable the investigation of a possible moderating effect of technology type on adoption behavior by extracting and analyzing the technology descriptions from 950 papers covering over 20 years of technology acceptance research. We utilize both human judgment and statistical techniques by using the results of the manual sorting of technology descriptions by six individuals as input for a multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis to group them into hierarchical cluster structures. 46. Renal transplantation associated with HIV infection: A Saudi Arabian experience and review of the literature

Abstract

Of 504 kidney transplant recipients attending our center, 6 developed serological evidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection (1.2%). All 6 patients had been transplanted abroad. Of those, 3 died (mean time from transplantation to death 37 months), 2 having developed full‐blown AIDS and the 3rd from opportunistic infections related to immunosuppressive drugs. Of the remaining 3, one developed Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) which responded to reduction in immunosuppression, but this patient was subsequently lost to follow‐up. The other 2 are asymptomatic with stable renal function. Sixty cases with HIV infection reported in the World Literature were reviewed. The incidence of Western blot positivity among renal transplant recipients ranged from 0.12% to 6.12%. Accelerated course of HIV disease was observed in this population, particularly in those who were HIV‐seropositive prior to transplantation. This study reviews various aspects of HIV infection in renal transplant recipients, including route of infection, natural history of the disease, effect of immunosuppression, allograft function, and whether opportunistic infections are related to immunosuppressive drugs or HIV infection.
