1. Towards a Change Taxonomy for Machine Learning Systems

Abstract

Machine Learning (ML) research publications commonly provide open-source implementations on GitHub, allowing their audience to replicate, validate, or even extend machine learning algorithms, data sets, and metadata. However, thus far little is known about the degree of collaboration activity happening on such ML research repositories, in particular regarding (1) the degree to which such repositories receive contributions from forks, (2) the nature of such contributions (i.e., the types of changes), and (3) the nature of changes that are not contributed back to forks, which might represent missed opportunities. In this paper, we empirically study contributions to 1,346 ML research repositories and their 67,369 forks, both quantitatively and qualitatively (by building on Hindle et al.'s seminal taxonomy of code changes). We found that while ML research repositories are heavily forked, only 9% of the forks made modifications to the forked repository. 42% of the latter sent changes to the parent repositories, half of which (52%) were accepted by the parent repositories. Our qualitative analysis on 539 contributed and 378 local (fork-only) changes, extends Hindle et al.'s taxonomy with one new top-level change category related to ML (Data), and 15 new sub-categories, including nine ML-specific ones (input data, output data, program data, sharing, change evaluation, parameter tuning, performance, pre-processing, model training). While the changes that are not contributed back by the forks mostly concern domain-specific customizations and local experimentation (e.g., parameter tuning), the origin ML repositories do miss out on a non-negligible 15.4% of Documentation changes, 13.6% of Feature changes and 11.4% of Bug fix changes. The findings in this paper will be useful for practitioners, researchers, toolsmiths, and educators.

Abstract

Anemia among adolescents in Indonesia has increased since 2007 until now, as well as worldwide. Anemia had affected their growth and development, along with cognitive abilities, making them susceptible to infectious diseases. Cognitive ability is closely related to the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of adolescents as internal factors. This study was an introductory study in the development of nutrition education based on local wisdom for adolescents with anemia as early prevention. A qualitative study was conducted in October 2020 in Cirebon District, West Java. The participants consisted of 10 people (eight stakeholders and two experts). Data were collected through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with instruments as a guide in collecting information data. Data were recorded with the subject's consent, transcribed word for word, and analyzed based on the listed theme by the researcher. Results from the survey stated that using digital development 4,0 learning models will be applied through blended learning and integrated into students' extracurricular activities, using a variety of learning methods and media according to adolescents' development. Thus, this study involved various government sectors to apply the nutrition education model in schools through government policies. Furthermore, it may become a preventive measure for adolescents with anemia.

Abstract

Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially in Machine Learning (ML), have introduced various practical applications (e.g., virtual personal assistants and autonomous cars) that enhance the experience of everyday users. However, modern ML technologies like Deep Learning require considerable technical expertise and resources to develop, train and deploy such models, making effective reuse of the ML models a necessity. Such discovery and reuse by practitioners and researchers are being addressed by public ML package repositories, which bundle up pre-trained models into packages for publication. Since such repositories are a recent phenomenon, there is no empirical data on their current state and challenges. Hence, this paper conducts an exploratory study that analyzes the structure and contents of two popular ML package repositories, TFHub and PyTorch Hub, comparing their information elements (features and policies), package organization, package manager functionalities and usage contexts against popular software package repositories (npm, PyPI, and CRAN). Through these studies, we have identified unique SE practices and challenges for sharing ML packages. These findings and implications would be useful for data scientists, researchers and software developers who intend to use these shared ML packages.

Abstract

Objective: To determine consensus, using Delphi methodology, on the critical procedural steps for intravascular intrauterine transfusion (IUT) for the treatment of fetal anemia. Methods: We conducted a two‐part Delphi survey of international experts in fetal intervention. The first round of the survey proposed 32 potentially critical steps for the IUT procedure. Participants were asked to rate all steps on a Likert scale ranging from 1 (not important) to 5 (absolutely essential). We calculated the mean Likert score and 95% CI for all steps. Procedural steps were determined to be critical if the lower bound of the 95% CI was ≥ 3.0 and were excluded if the upper bound of the 95% CI was ≤ 3.5. In the second round of the survey, participants were asked specific questions regarding parameters associated with the procedural steps determined to be critical in the first round. Results: Overall, 49 individuals from 24 different countries (six continents) participated in both rounds of the Delphi survey. The median length of experience in fetal medicine was 21 (range, 4–38) years. The median number of IUT procedures performed annually per respondent was 20 (range, 2–80). Of the 32 proposed procedural steps, 20 were determined to be critical and 12 non‐critical procedural steps were excluded. Respondents indicated that an individual should perform a median of 20 (range, 10–50) IUT procedures during training to attain competency, and that the median number of IUT procedures required annually to maintain competency was 10 (range, 5–20). There was marked variation between respondents in how they performed the following critical IUT procedural steps: preparation of donor blood, preoperative medication, maternal anesthesia, site chosen for cordocentesis, use of fetal paralysis, method for determining fetal hematocrit, postoperative care and decision to schedule a subsequent IUT. Conclusions: The findings of this international Delphi survey can be used to standardize the approach to performing IUT. An experienced fetal interventionist should perform the procedure, and in centers in which IUT is performed infrequently, referral to a more experienced center should be considered. Calculating the specific volume of blood to transfuse at the start of the procedure and undertaking continuous fetal heart‐rate monitoring once the gestational‐age threshold for viability is reached were ranked highest in the intra‐ and postoperative phases of the procedure, respectively. © 2024 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. 18. Assessing Textbook Outcome After Implementation of Transversus Abdominis Release in a Regional Hospital

Abstract

Background: The posterior component separation technique with transversus abdominis release (TAR) was introduced in 2012 as an alternative to the classic anterior component separation technique (Ramirez). This study describes outcome and learning curve of TAR, five years after implementation of this new technique in a regional hospital in the Netherlands.Methods: A standardized work up protocol, based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, was used to implement the TAR. The TAR technique as described by Novitsky was performed. After each 20 procedures, outcome parameters were evaluated and new quality measurements implemented. Primary outcome measure was Textbook Outcome, the rate of patients with an uneventful clinical postoperative course after TAR. Textbook Outcome is defined by a maximum of 7 days hospitalization without any complication (wound or systemic), reoperation or readmittance, within the first 90 postoperative days, and without a recurrence during follow up. The number of patients with a Textbook Outcome compared to the total number of consecutively performed TARs is depicted as the institutional learning curve. Secondary outcome measures were the details and incidences of the surgical site and systemic complications within 90 days, as well as long-term recurrences.Results: From 2016, sixty-nine consecutive patients underwent a TAR. Textbook Outcome was 35% and the institutional learning curve did not flatten after 69 procedures. Systemic complications occurred in 48%, wound complications in 41%, and recurrences in 4%. Separate analyses of three successive cohorts of each 20 TARs demonstrated that both Textbook Outcome (10%, 30% and 55%, respectively) and the rate of surgical site events (45%, 15%, and 10%) significantly (p < 0.05) improved with more experience.Conclusion: Implementation of the open transversus abdominis release demonstrated that outcome was positively correlated to an increasing number of TARs performed. TAR has a long learning curve, only partially determined by the technical aspects of the operation. Implementation of the TAR requires a solid plan. Building, and maintaining, an adequate setting for patients with complex ventral hernias is the real challenge and driving force to improve outcome.

Abstract

To understand global changes in the Earth system, scientists must generalize globally from observations made locally and regionally. In land change science (LCS), local field-based observations are costly and time consuming, and generally obtained by researchers working at disparate local and regional case-study sites chosen for different reasons. As a result, global synthesis efforts in LCS tend to be based on non-statistical inferences subject to geographic biases stemming from data limitations and fragmentation. Thus, a fundamental challenge is the production of generalized knowledge that links evidence of the causes and consequences of local land change to global patterns and vice versa. The GLOBE system was designed to meet this challenge. GLOBE aims to transform global change science by enabling new scientific workflows based on statistically robust, globally relevant integration of local and regional observations using an online social-computational and geovisualization system. Consistent with the goals of Digital Earth, GLOBE has the capability to assess the global relevance of local case-study findings within the context of over 50 global biophysical, land-use, climate, and socio-economic datasets. We demonstrate the implementation of one such assessment - a representativeness analysis - with a recently published meta-study of changes in swidden agriculture in tropical forests. The analysis provides a standardized indicator to judge the global representativeness of the trends reported in the meta-study, and a geovisualization is presented that highlights areas for which sampling efforts can be reduced and those in need of further study. LBN works by combining the IOP-lowering effects of the prostaglandin analogs (through the uveoscleral pathway) with nitric oxide-induced relaxation of the trabecular meshwork and Schlemm’s canal. Nitric oxide-induced relaxation of the trabecular meshwork and Schlemm’s canal leads to increased outflow through the trabecular meshwork and thus lowering of IOP. LBN has now been shown in multiple clinical studies to be effective and safe. In this article, we summarize the clinical trials that led to LBN’s approval as well as the comparative studies that have been done to evaluate the efficacy of this drug as compared to other US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved therapies for OAG and OHT. We then review the side effects of treatment that were seen in each of these studies. Finally, we will attempt to discuss the place of this drug in therapy for patients with OAG. Abstract

Abstract The SABER instrument on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics satellite continues to provide a long‐term record of Earth's stratosphere, mesosphere, and lower thermosphere. The SABER data are being used to examine long‐term changes and trends in temperature, water vapor, and carbon dioxide. A tacit, central assumption of these analyses is that the SABER instrument radiometric calibration is not changing with time; that is, the instrument is stable. SABER stratospheric temperatures and those derived from Global Positioning System Radio Occultation measurements are compared to examine SABER's stability. Global Positioning System Radio Occultation measurements are inherently stable due to the accuracy and traceability of the measured phase delay rate to the Système Internationale definition of the second. Differences in global annual mean SABER and COSMIC lower stratospheric temperatures show little significant change with time in the 11 years spanning 2007–2017. From this analysis we infer that SABER temperatures are stable to better than 0.1 to 0.2 K per decade.

Abstract

The Nimbus 7 limb infrared monitor of the stratosphere (LIMS) instrument operated from October 25, 1978, through May 28, 1979. Its Version 6 (V6) profiles and their Level 3 or zonal Fourier coefficient products have been characterized and archived in 2008 and in 2011, respectively. This paper focuses on the value and use of daily ozone maps from Level 3, based on a gridding of its zonal coefficients. We present maps of V6 ozone on pressure surfaces and compare them with several rocket-borne chemiluminescent ozone measurements that extend into the lower mesosphere. Daily, synoptic maps of V6 ozone and temperature illustrate that they are an important aid in interpreting satellite limb-infrared emission versus local measurements, especially when they occur during dynamically active periods of northern hemisphere winter. We then show a sequence of V6 maps of upper stratospheric ozone, spanning the minor stratospheric warmings of late January and early February 1979. The map sequence of V6 geopotential height reveals how ozone was changing in the vortex and at the centers of adjacent anticyclones. We also report on zonal variations of the tertiary ozone maximum of the upper mesosphere and its associated temperature fields during winter. These several examples provide a guide to researchers for further exploratory analyses of middle atmosphere ozone from LIMS.

Abstract

SABER (Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry) is a 10-channel infrared radiometer that is one of four instruments on the NASA TIMED (Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics) satellite mission to study the structure, energetics, chemistry, and dynamics of the Earth’s mesosphere and lower thermosphere. The TIMED spacecraft was launched into a 625 km circular polar orbit (74.1º inclination) via a Boeing Delta II rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base on 7 December 2001. SABER continues to operate nominally and collect data routinely as it has for over 21 years. Over 2,200 peer-reviewed journal articles have been published worldwide using SABER data. A list of these articles is included in the Supporting Information accompanying this paper. This paper presents a detailed technical description of the SABER instrument including major subsystems of the instrument and technical performance parameters. This paper comprehensively describes the instrument and its components and provides final instrument design and performance parameters. The motivation for this paper is to document this information permanently for future reference. The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) of Utah State University designed, fabricated, and calibrated the SABER instrument in close collaboration with NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton University, and Global Atmospheric Technologies and Science (GATS).

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering efficacy and safety of 10 and 15 µg bimatoprost implant in patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) or ocular hypertension (OHT). Methods This randomized, 20-month, multicenter, masked, parallel-group, phase 3 trial enrolled 528 patients with OAG or OHT and an open iridocorneal angle inferiorly in the study eye. Study eyes were administered 10 or 15 µg bimatoprost implant on day 1, week 16, and week 32, or twice-daily topical timolol maleate 0.5%. Primary endpoints were IOP and IOP change from baseline through week 12. Safety measures included treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) and corneal endothelial cell density (CECD). Results Both 10 and 15 µg bimatoprost implant met the primary endpoint of noninferiority to timolol in IOP lowering through 12 weeks. Mean IOP reductions from baseline ranged from 6.2–7.4, 6.5–7.8, and 6.1–6.7 mmHg through week 12 in the 10 µg implant, 15 µg implant, and timolol groups, respectively. IOP lowering was similar after the second and third implant administrations. Probabilities of requiring no IOP-lowering treatment for 1 year after the third administration were 77.5% (10 µg implant) and 79.0% (15 µg implant). The most common TEAE was conjunctival hyperemia, typically temporally associated with the administration procedure. Corneal TEAEs of interest (primarily corneal endothelial cell loss, corneal edema, and corneal touch) were more frequent with the 15 than the 10 µg implant and generally were reported after repeated administrations. Loss in mean CECD from baseline to month 20 was ~ 5% in 10 µg implant-treated eyes and ~ 1% in topical timolol-treated eyes. Visual field progression (change in the mean deviation from baseline) was reduced in the 10 µg implant group compared with the timolol group. Conclusions The results corroborated the previous phase 3 study of the bimatoprost implant. The bimatoprost implant met the primary endpoint and effectively lowered IOP. The majority of patients required no additional treatment for 12 months after the third administration. The benefit-risk assessment favored the 10 over the 15 µg implant. Studies evaluating other administration regimens with reduced risk of corneal events are ongoing. The bimatoprost implant has the potential to improve adherence and reduce treatment burden in glaucoma. Clinicaltrials.gov Identifier NCT02250651.
