We propose a novel MIMO-WDM Volterra-based nonlinear-equalisation scheme with adaptive time-domain nonlinear stages enhanced by filtering in both the power and optical signal waveforms. Mode-division multiplexing has shown its ability to significantly increase the capacity of free-space optical communications. An accurate alignment is crucial to enable such links due to possible performance degradation induced by mode crosstalk and narrow beam divergence. Conventionally, a beacon beam is necessary for system alignment due to multiple local maximums in the mode-division multiplexed beam profile. However, the beacon beam introduces excess system complexity, power consumption, and alignment errors. Here we demonstrate a beaconless system with significantly higher alignment accuracy and faster acquisition. This system also excludes excess complexity, power consumption, and alignment errors, facilitating simplified system calibration and supporting a record-high 5.14 Tbit/s line rate in a single-wavelength free-space optical link. We anticipate our paper to be a starting point for more sophisticated alignment scenarios in future multi-Terabit mode-division multiplexing free-space optical communications for long-distance applications with a generalised mode basis.

A representative researcher pursuing a question has repeated opportunities for empirical research. To process findings, she must impose an identifying assumption, which ensures that repeated observation would provide a definitive answer to her question. Research designs vary in quality and are implemented only when the assumption is plausible enough according to a KL-divergence-based criterion, and then beliefs are Bayes-updated as if the assumption were perfectly valid. We study the dynamics of this learning process and its induced long-run beliefs. The rate of research cannot uniformly accelerate over time. We characterize environments in which it is stationary. Long-run beliefs can exhibit history-dependence. We apply the model to stylized examples of empirical methodologies: experiments, causal-inference techniques, and (in an extension) ``structural'' identification methods such as ``calibration'' and ``Heckman selection.''

We demonstrate a novel method to ionize molecules or molecular clusters by proton transfer at temperatures below 1 K. The method yields nascent ions and largely eliminates secondary reactions, even for notoriously "delicate" molecules. Protonation is achieved inside liquid helium nanodroplets (HNDs) and begins with the formation of (H$_{2}$)$_{m}$H$^{+}$ ions as the proton donors. In a separate and subsequent step the HNDs are doped with a proton acceptor molecule, X. Proton transfer occurs between X and the cold proton donor ions inside a helium droplet, an approach that avoids the large excess energy that is released if HNDs are first doped and then ionized. Mass spectra, recorded after stripping excess helium and hydrogen in a collision cell, show that this method offers a new way to determine proton affinities of molecules and clusters by proton-transfer bracketing, to investigate astrochemically relevant ion-molecule reactions at sub-kelvin temperatures, and to prepare XH$^{+}$ ions that are suitable for messenger-tagging action spectroscopy., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, electronic supplementary information

We experimentally demonstrate the enhanced atmospheric turbulence resiliency in a 137.8 Gbit/s/mode mode-division multiplexing free-space optical communication link through the application of a successive interference cancellation digital signal processing algorithm. The turbulence resiliency is further enhanced through redundant receive channels in the mode-division multiplexing link. The proof of concept demonstration is performed using commercially available mode-selective photonic lanterns, a commercial transponder, and a spatial light modulator based turbulence emulator. In this link, 5 spatial modes with each mode carrying 34.46 GBaud dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying signals are successfully transmitted with an average bit error rate lower than the hard-decision forward error correction limit. As a result, we achieved a record-high mode- and polarization-division multiplexing channel number of 10, a record-high line rate of 689.23 Gbit/s, and a record-high net spectral efficiency of 13.9 bit/s/Hz in emulated turbulent links in a mode-division multiplexing free-space optical system.

We introduce the domain adaptation and randomization approach for calibrating neural network-based equalizers for real transmissions, using synthetic data. This paper derives a novel pilot-aided phase and channel estimation algorithm for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with phase noise and quasi-static channel fading. Our novel approach allows, for the first time, carrier phase estimation and recovery to be performed before full channel estimation. This in turn enables the channel estimation to be calculated using the whole frame, significantly improving its accuracy. The proposed algorithm is a sequential combination of several linear algorithms, which greatly reduces the computational complexity. Moreover, we also derive, for the first time, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for a MIMO system, where phase noise is estimated using only angular information. Our numerical results show that the performance of our phase estimation algorithm is close to the proposed CRLB. Moreover, when compared with the conventional Kalman based algorithms, our proposed algorithm significantly improves the system BER performance.

When making a decision based on observational data, a person's choice depends on her beliefs about which correlations reflect causality and which do not. We model an agent who predicts the outcome of each available action from observational data using a subjective causal model represented by a directed acyclic graph (DAG). An analyst can identify the agent's DAG from her random choice rule. Her choices reveal the chains of causal reasoning that she undertakes and the confounding variables she adjusts for, and these objects pin down her model. When her choices determine the data available, her behavior affects her inferences, which in turn affect her choices. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for testing whether such an agent's behavior is compatible with the model.

In many choice problems, the interaction between several distinct variables determines the payoff of each alternative. I propose and axiomatize a model of a decision maker who recognizes that she may not accurately perceive the correlation between these variables, and who takes this into account when making her decision. She chooses as if she calculates each alternative's expected outcome under multiple possible correlation structures, and then evaluates it according to the worst expected outcome.

Experiments suggest that people fail to take into account interdependencies between their choices -- they do not broadly bracket. Researchers often instead assume that people narrowly bracket, but existing designs do not test it. We design a novel experiment and revealed preference tests for how someone brackets their choices. In portfolio allocation under risk, social allocation, and induced-value shopping experiments, 40-43% of subjects are consistent with narrow bracketing and 0-16% with broad bracketing. Adjusting for each model's predictive precision, 74% of subjects are best described by narrow bracketing, 13% by broad bracketing, and 6% by intermediate cases.

We propose and axiomatize the categorical thinking model (CTM) in which the framing of the decision problem affects how agents categorize alternatives, that in turn affects their evaluation of it. Prominent models of salience, status quo bias, loss-aversion, inequality aversion, and present bias all fit under the umbrella of CTM. This suggests categorization is an underlying mechanism of key departures from the neoclassical model of choice. We specialize CTM to provide a behavioral foundation for the salient thinking model of Bordalo et al. (2013) that highlights its strong predictions and distinctions from other models.

We report on the production and study of stable, highly charged droplets of superfluid helium. Using a novel experimental setup we produce neutral beams of liquid helium nanodroplets containing millions of atoms or more that can be ionized by electron impact, mass-per-charge selected, and ionized a second time before being analyzed. Droplets containing up to 55 net positive charges are identified and the appearance sizes of multiply charge droplets are determined as a function of charge state. We show that the droplets are stable on the millisecond time scale of the experiment and decay through the loss of small charged clusters, not through symmetric Coulomb explosions., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, published in Physical Review Letters

Low energy electron attachment to mixed (H$_2$)$_x$/(O$_2$)$_y$ clusters and their deuterated analogues has been investigated for the first time. These experiments were carried out using liquid helium nanodroplets to form the clusters, and the effect of the added electron was then monitored via mass spectrometry. There are some important differences between electron attachment to the pure clusters and to the mixed clusters. A particularly notable feature is the formation of HO$_2$$^{-}$ and H$_2$O$^{-}$ ions from an electron-induced chemical reaction between the two dopants. The chemistry leading to these anions appears to be driven by electron resonances associated with H$_2$ rather than O$_2$. The electron resonances for H$_2$ can lead to dissociative electron attachment (DEA), just as for the free H$_2$ molecule. However, there is evidence that the resonance in H$_2$ can also lead to rapid electron transfer to O$_2$, which then induces DEA of the O$_2$. Ion-molecule reactions between clusters of H$_2$/D$_2$ and O$_2$ in liquid helium nanodroplets were initiated by electron-induced ionization (at 70 eV). Reaction products were detected by mass spectrometry and can be explained by a primary reaction channel involving proton transfer from H$_3$$^{+}$ or H$_3$$^{+}$(H$_2$)$_n$ clusters and their deuterated equivalents. Very little HO$_2$$^{+}$ is seen from the reaction of H$_3$$^{+}$ with O$_2$, which is attributed to an efficient secondary reaction between HO$_2$$^{+}$ and H$_2$. On the other hand HO$_4$$^{+}$ is the most abundant product from the reaction of H$_3$$^{+}$ with oxygen dimer, (O$_2$)$_2$. The experimental data suggest that HO$_4$$^{+}$ is a particularly stable ion and this is consistent with recent theoretical studies of this ion., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

We report the first experimental study of the attachment of multiple foreign atoms to a cationic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). The chosen PAH was coronene, C$_{24}$H$_{12}$, which was added to liquid helium nanodroplets and then subjected to electron bombardment. Using mass spectrometry, coronene cations decorated with helium atoms were clearly seen and the spectrum shows peaks with anomalously high intensities ("magic number" peaks), which represent ion-helium complexes with added stability. The data suggest formation of a rigid helium layer consisting of 38 helium atoms that completely covers both faces of the coronene ion. Additional magic numbers can be seen for the further addition of 3 and 6 helium atoms, which are thought to attach to the edge of the coronene. The observation of magic numbers for the addition of 38 and 44 helium atoms is in good agreement with a recent path integral Monte Carlo prediction for helium atoms on neutral coronene. An understanding of how atoms and molecules attach to PAH ions is important for a number of reasons including the potential role such complexes might play in the chemistry of the interstellar medium., Comment: 14 pages. 2 figures

Expanding the use of physical degrees of freedom to employ spatial multiplexing of data in optical communication is considered the most disruptive and effective solution to meet the capacity demand of the growing information traffic. Development of space-division-multiplexing methods stimulated research on spatial modulation, detection and processing of data, attracting interest from various fields of science. A passive all-dielectric metasurface with near-unity transmission is used to engineer spatial mode profiles, potentially of arbitrary complexity. The broadband response of the metasurface covers S, C, and L bands of fibre communications. Unlike conventional phase plates, the metasurface allows for both phase and polarization conversion, providing full flexibility for mode engineering. We employ the metasurface for both mode modulation and mode multiplexing in free-space optical communication, and demonstrate that it is capable of mode multiplexing with an extinction ratio in excess of 20 dB over the whole C-band with negligible penalty even for 100 Gb/s DP-QPSK signals. These results merge two seemingly different fields, optical communication and metamaterials, and suggest a novel approach for ultimate miniaturisation of mode multiplexers and advanced LiFi technologies.

The chemical and physical properties of molecular clusters can heavily depend on their size, which makes them very attractive for the design of new materials with tailored properties. Deriving the structure and dynamics of clusters is therefore of major interest in science. Weakly bound clusters can be studied using conventional spectroscopic techniques, but the number of lines observed is often too small for a comprehensive structural analysis. Impulsive alignment generates rotational wavepackets, which provides simultaneous information on structure and dynamics, as has been demonstrated successfully for isolated molecules. Here, we apply this technique for the firsttime to clusters comprising of a molecule and a single helium atom. By forcing the population of high rotational levels in intense laser fields we demonstrate the generation of rich rotational line spectra for this system, establishing the highly delocalised structure and the coherence of rotational wavepacket propagation.
