Early childhood educators play an essential role in providing child care for families and learning and development supports for young children, yet they have long faced challenges due to low wages. Recognizing this, the District of Columbia (DC) introduced the Early Childhood Pay Equity Fund in 2022. This first-of-its-kind initiative aims to bridge the pay gap between early educators and teachers at public schools, addressing historical inequities and improving recruitment and retention efforts. This report provides an in-depth exploration of early educators' experiences with the Pay Equity Fund during its initial year of implementation. Drawing on data from surveys conducted in May 2023 and follow-up focus groups, the report offers insights into the transition from direct payments to an opt-in payment structure by employers in FY 2024. It covers educators' introduction to the Fund, their application and payment experiences, financial impacts, and perceived benefits for child care programs and the broader early childhood education field.

We study the global symmetries of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-orbifold of N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory and its marginal deformations. The process of orbifolding to obtain an N=2 theory would appear to break the $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ R-symmetry down to $\mathrm{SU}(2)\times \mathrm{SU}(2)\times \mathrm{U}(1)$. We show that the broken generators can be recovered by moving beyond the Lie algebraic setting to that of a Lie algebroid. This remains true when marginally deforming away from the orbifold point by allowing the couplings of the $ \mathrm{SU}(N)\times \mathrm{SU}(N)$ gauge groups to vary independently. The information about the marginal deformation is captured by a Drinfeld-type twist of this $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ Lie algebroid. The twist is read off from the F- and D- terms, and thus directly from the Lagrangian. Even though at the orbifold point the algebraic structure is associative, it becomes non-associative after the marginal deformation. We explicitly check that the planar Lagrangian of the theory is invariant under this twisted version of the $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ algebroid and we discuss implications of this hidden symmetry for the spectrum of the N=2 theory., Comment: 42 pages + appendices, 7 figures

We propose a numerical method to estimate one-point functions and the free-energy density of conformal field theories at finite temperature by solving the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger condition for the two-point functions of identical scalars. We apply the method for the critical O(N) model for N = 1,2,3 in 3 $\leq$ d $\leq$ 4. We find agreement with known results from Monte Carlo simulations and previous results for the 3d Ising model, and we provide new predictions for N = 2,3., Comment: 5 pages plus supplemental material

We consider protected operators with the same conformal dimensions in the ultraviolet and infrared fixed point. We derive a sum rule for the difference between the two-point function coefficient of these operators in the ultraviolet and infrared fixed point which depends on the two-point function of the scalar operator. In even dimensional conformal field theories, scalar operators with exactly integer conformal dimensions are associated with Type-B conformal anomalies. The sum rule, in these cases, computes differences between Type-B anomaly coefficients. We argue the positivity of this difference in cases in which the conformal manifold contains weakly coupled theories. The results are tested in free theories as well as in $\mathcal N = 2$ superconformal QCD, necklace quivers and holographic RG flows. We study the spin chain model which captures the one-loop spectral problem of a prototypical example of an $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT in four dimensions. Up to date, this spin chain model remains unfathomable; the coordinate Bethe Ansatz does not lead to a solution from three magnons on, as the Yang-Baxter equation is not satisfied by the two-magnon scattering coefficients. In this paper, we find a long-range solution to the eigenvalue problem for three magnons. Remarkably, the scattering coefficients of our solution together with the position-dependent corrections, obey an infinite tower of Yang-Baxter equations. Our method of solving the three-magnon problem is interesting in its own right and generalizes the coordinate Bethe Ansatz approach to cases where the permutation symmetry is broken., Comment: 49 pages, 6 figures

We study conformal field theories at finite temperature in the presence of a temporal conformal line defect, wrapping the thermal circle, akin to a Polyakov loop in gauge theories. Although several symmetries of the conformal group are broken, the model can still be highly constrained from its features at zero-temperature. In this work we show that the defect and bulk one and two-point correlators can be written as functions of zero-temperature data and thermal one-point functions (defect and bulk). The defect one-point functions are new data and they are induced by thermal effects of the bulk. For this new set of data we derive novel sum rules and establish a bootstrap problem for the thermal defect one-point functions from the KMS condition. We also comment on the behaviour of operators with large scaling dimensions. Additionally, we relate the free energy and entropy density to the OPE data through the one-point function of the stress-energy tensor. Our formalism is validated through analytical computations in generalized free scalar field theory, and we present new predictions for the O(N) model with a magnetic impurity in the $\varepsilon$-expansion and the large N limit., Comment: 38 pages, 2 figures

Researchers are increasingly using language models (LMs) for text annotation. These approaches rely only on a prompt telling the model to return a given output according to a set of instructions. The reproducibility of LM outputs may nonetheless be vulnerable to small changes in the prompt design. This calls into question the replicability of classification routines. To tackle this problem, researchers have typically tested a variety of semantically similar prompts to determine what we call "prompt stability." These approaches remain ad-hoc and task specific. In this article, we propose a general framework for diagnosing prompt stability by adapting traditional approaches to intra- and inter-coder reliability scoring. We call the resulting metric the Prompt Stability Score (PSS) and provide a Python package PromptStability for its estimation. Using six different datasets and twelve outcomes, we classify >150k rows of data to: a) diagnose when prompt stability is low; and b) demonstrate the functionality of the package. The Helsinki Speech Challenge 2024 (HSC2024) invites researchers to enhance and deconvolve speech audio recordings. We recorded a dataset that challenges participants to apply speech enhancement and inverse problems techniques to recorded speech data. This dataset includes paired samples of AI-generated clean speech and corresponding recordings, which feature varying levels of corruption, including frequency attenuation and reverberation. The challenge focuses on developing innovative deconvolution methods to accurately recover the original audio. The effectiveness of these methods will be quantitatively assessed using a speech recognition model, providing a relevant metric for evaluating enhancements in real-world scenarios.

We apply reinforcement learning (RL) to generate fine regular star triangulations of reflexive polytopes, that give rise to smooth Calabi-Yau (CY) hypersurfaces. We demonstrate that, by simple modifications to the data encoding and reward function, one can search for CYs that satisfy a set of desirable string compactification conditions. For instance, we show that our RL algorithm can generate triangulations together with holomorphic vector bundles that satisfy anomaly cancellation and poly-stability conditions in heterotic compactification. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm can be used to search for reflexive subpolytopes together with compatible triangulations that define fibration structures of the CYs.

This paper focuses on the runtime verification of hyperproperties expressed in HypermuHML, an expressive yet simple logic for describing properties of sets of traces. To this end, we first consider a simple language of monitors that can observe sets of system executions and report verdicts w.r.t. a given HypermuHML formula. In this setting, a unique omniscient monitor observes all system traces, and, in this sense, it is 'centralized'. However, in a possibly distributed system, having a centralized entity is undesirable; hence, we also provide a language for 'decentralized' monitors, where each trace has its own monitor, and monitors for different traces can yield a unique verdict by communicating their observations. For both the centralized and the decentralized settings, we provide a synthesis procedure that, given a formula, yields a monitor that is correct (i.e., sound and violation complete). A key step in proving the correctness of the synthesis for decentralized monitors is a result showing that, for each formula, the synthesized centralized monitor and its corresponding decentralized one are weakly bisimilar for a suitable notion of weak bisimulation.

Real 3-manifold triangulations can be uniquely represented by isomorphism signatures. Databases of these isomorphism signatures are generated for a variety of 3-manifolds and knot complements, using SnapPy and Regina, then these language-like inputs are used to train various machine learning architectures to differentiate the manifolds, as well as their Dehn surgeries, via their triangulations. Gradient saliency analysis then extracts key parts of this language-like encoding scheme from the trained models. The isomorphism signature databases are taken from the 3-manifolds' Pachner graphs, which are also generated in bulk for some selected manifolds of focus and for the subset of the SnapPy orientable cusped census with $<8$ initial tetrahedra. These Pachner graphs are further analysed through the lens of network science to identify new structure in the triangulation representation; in particular for the hyperbolic case, a relation between the length of the shortest geodesic (systole) and the size of the Pachner graph's ball is observed., Comment: 35 pages; 23 figures; 7 tables

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have recently become the state-of-the-art tool for large-scale image classification. In this work we propose the use of activation features from CNNs as local descriptors for writer identification. A global descriptor is then formed by means of GMM supervector encoding, which is further improved by normalization with the KL-Kernel. We evaluate our method on two publicly available datasets: the ICDAR 2013 benchmark database and the CVL dataset. While we perform comparably to the state of the art on CVL, our proposed method yields about 0.21 absolute improvement in terms of mAP on the challenging bilingual ICDAR dataset., Comment: fixed tab 1b

We study CFTs at finite temperature and derive explicit sum rules for one-point functions of operators by imposing the KMS condition. In the case of a large gap between light and heavy operators, we explicitly compute one-point functions for light operators. Turning to heavy operators we employ Tauberian theorems and compute the asymptotic OPE density for heavy operators, from which we extract the leading terms of the OPE coefficients associated with heavy operators. The effect of nonlocality on the optical response of metals lies at the forefront of research in nanoscale physics and, in particular, quantum plasmonics. In alkali metals, nonlocality manifests predominantly as electron density spill-out at the metal boundary, and as surface-enabled Landau damping. For an accurate description of plasmonic modes, these effects need be taken into account in the theoretical modelling of the material. The resulting modal frequency shifts and broadening become particularly relevant when dealing with the strong interaction between plasmons and excitons, where hybrid modes emerge and the way they are affected can reflect modifications of the coupling strength. Both nonlocal phenomena can be incorporated in the classical local theory by applying a surface-response formalism embodied by the Feibelman parameters. Here, we implement surface-response corrections in Mie theory to study the optical response of spherical plasmonic--excitonic composites in core--shell configurations. We investigate sodium, a jellium metal dominated by spill-out, for which it has been anticipated that nonlocal corrections should lead to an observable change in the coupling strength, appearing as a modification of the width of the mode splitting. We show that, contrary to expectations, the influence of nonlocality on the anticrossing is minimal, thus validating the accuracy of the local response approximation in strong-coupling photonics.

We discuss the possibility of self-hybridisation in high-index dielectric nanoparticles, where Mie modes of electric or magnetic type can couple to the interband transitions of the material, leading to spectral anticrossings. Starting with an idealised system described by moderately high constant permittivity with a narrow Lorentzian, in which self-hybridisation is visible for both plane-wave and electron-beam excitation, we embark on a quest for realistic systems where this effect should be visible. We explore a variety of spherical particles made of traditional semiconductors such as Si, GaAs, and GaP. With the effect hardly discernible, we identify two major causes hindering observation of self-hybridisation: the very broad spectral fingerprints of interband transitions in most candidate materials, and the significant overlap between electric and magnetic Mie modes in nanospheres. We thus depart from the spherical shape, and show that interband--Mie hybridisation is indeed feasible in the example of GaAs cylinders, even with a simple plane-wave source. This so-far unreported kind of polariton has to be considered when interpreting experimental spectra of Mie-resonant nanoparticles and assigning modal characters to specific features. On the other hand, it has the potential to be useful for the characterisation of the optical properties of dielectric materials, through control of the hybridisation strength via nanoparticle size and shape.

The performance of time-independent, orbital optimized calculations of excited states is assessed with respect to charge transfer excitations in organic molecules in comparison to the linear-response time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) approach. A direct optimization method to converge on saddle points of the electronic energy surface is used to carry out calculations with the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) functionals PBE and BLYP for a set of 27 excitations in 15 molecules. The time-independent approach is fully variational and provides a relaxed excited state electron density from which the extent of charge transfer is quantified. The TD-DFT calculations are generally found to provide larger charge transfer distances compared to the orbital optimized calculations, even when including orbital relaxation effects with the Z-vector method. While the error on the excitation energy relative to theoretical best estimates is found to increase with the extent of charge transfer up to ca. $-2$ eV for TD-DFT, no correlation is observed for the orbital optimized approach. The orbital optimized calculations with the LDA and the GGA functionals provide a mean absolute error of $\sim$0.7 eV, outperforming TD-DFT with both local and global hybrid functionals for excitations with long-range charge transfer character. Orbital optimized calculations with the global hybrid functional B3LYP and the range-separated hybrid functional CAM-B3LYP on a selection of states with short- and long-range charge transfer indicate that inclusion of exact exchange has a small effect on the charge transfer distance, while it significantly improves the excitation energy, with the best performing functional CAM-B3LYP providing an absolute error typically around 0.15 eV., Comment: 42 pages, 8 figures; SI 4 pages, 2 figures

A novel reconstruction method is introduced for the severely ill-posed inverse problem of limited-angle tomography. It is well known that, depending on the available measurement, angles specify a subset of the wavefront set of the unknown target, while some oriented singularities remain invisible in the data. Topological Interface recovery for Limited-angle Tomography, or TILT, is based on lifting the visible part of the wavefront set under a universal covering map. In the space provided, it is possible to connect the appropriate pieces of the lifted wavefront set correctly using dual-tree complex wavelets, a dedicated metric, and persistent homology. The result is not only a suggested invisible boundary but also a computational representation for all interfaces in the target.

We propose a machine learning approach to study topological quantities related to the Sasakian and $G_2$-geometries of contact Calabi-Yau $7$-manifolds. Specifically, we compute datasets for certain Sasakian Hodge numbers and for the Crowley-N\"ordstrom invariant of the natural $G_2$-structure of the $7$-dimensional link of a weighted projective Calabi-Yau $3$-fold hypersurface singularity, for 7549 of the 7555 possible $\mathbb{P}^4(\textbf{w})$ projective spaces. These topological quantities are then machine learnt with high performance scores, where learning the Sasakian Hodge numbers from the $\mathbb{P}^4(\textbf{w})$ weights alone, using both neural networks and a symbolic regressor which achieve $R^2$ scores of 0.969 and 0.993 respectively. Additionally, properties of the respective Gr\"obner bases are well-learnt, leading to a vast improvement in computation speeds which may be of independent interest. There has been recent interest in novel Clifford geometric invariants of linear transformations. This motivates the investigation of such invariants for a certain type of geometric transformation of interest in the context of root systems, reflection groups, Lie groups and Lie algebras: the Coxeter transformations. We perform exhaustive calculations of all Coxeter transformations for $A_8$, $D_8$ and $E_8$ for a choice of basis of simple roots and compute their invariants, using high-performance computing. This computational algebra paradigm generates a dataset that can then be mined using techniques from data science such as supervised and unsupervised machine learning. In this paper we focus on neural network classification and principal component analysis. Since the output -- the invariants -- is fully determined by the choice of simple roots and the permutation order of the corresponding reflections in the Coxeter element, we expect huge degeneracy in the mapping. This provides the perfect setup for machine learning, and indeed we see that the datasets can be machine learned to very high accuracy. Subject: In this article, convolutional networks of one, two, and three dimensions are compared with respect to their ability to distinguish between the drawing tests produced by Parkinson's disease patients and healthy control subjects. Motivation: The application of deep learning techniques for the analysis of drawing tests to support the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease has become a growing trend in the area of Artificial Intelligence. Method: The dynamic features of the handwriting signal are embedded in the static test data to generate one-dimensional time series, two-dimensional RGB images and three-dimensional voxelized point clouds, and then one-, two-, and three-dimensional CNN can be used to automatically extract features for effective diagnosis. Novelty: While there are many results that describe the application of two-dimensional convolutional models to the problem, to the best knowledge of the authors, there are no results based on the application of three-dimensional models and very few using one-dimensional models. Main result: The accuracy of the one-, two- and three-dimensional CNN models was 62.50%, 77.78% and 83.34% in the DraWritePD dataset (acquired by the authors) and 73.33%, 80.00% and 86.67% in the PaHaW dataset (well known from the literature), respectively. For these two data sets, the proposed three-dimensional convolutional classification method exhibits the best diagnostic performance.

We present an analytic, Mie theory-based solution for the energy-loss and the photon-emission probabilities in the interaction of spherical nanoparticles with electrons passing nearby and through them, in both cathodoluminescence and electron energy-loss spectroscopies. In particular, we focus on the case of penetrating electron trajectories, for which the complete fully electrodynamic and relativistic formalism has not been reported as yet. We exhibit the efficiency of this method in describing collective excitations in matter through calculations for a dispersive and lossy system, namely a sphere described by a Drude permittivity. Subsequently, we use the analytic solution to corroborate the implementation of electron-beam sources in a state-of-the-art numerical method for problems in electrodynamics, the discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method. We show that the two approaches produce spectra in good mutual agreement, and demonstrate the versatility of DGTD via simulations of spherical nanoparticles characterized by surface roughness. The possibility of simultaneously employing both kinds of calculations (analytic and numerical) facilitates a better understanding of the rich optical response of nanophotonic architectures excited by fast electron beams., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

This paper studies the complexity of classical modal logics and of their extension with fixed-point operators, using translations to transfer results across logics. In particular, we show several complexity results for multi-agent logics via translations to and from the $\mu$-calculus and modal logic, which allow us to transfer known upper and lower bounds. We also use these translations to introduce terminating and non-terminating tableau systems for the logics we study, based on Kozen's tableau for the $\mu$-calculus and the one of Fitting and Massacci for modal logic. Finally, we describe these tableaux with $\mu$-calculus formulas, thus reducing the satisfiability of each of these logics to the satisfiability of the $\mu$-calculus, resulting in a general 2EXP upper bound for satisfiability testing., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2209.10377

When a (super) conformal field theory is placed on a non-trivial manifold, the (super) conformal symmetry is broken. However, it is still possible to derive broken Ward identities for these broken symmetries, which provide additional constraints on the theory. We derive and apply the broken Ward identities associated with the (super) conformal group on the thermal manifold $\mathcal{M}_\beta = S_\beta^1 \times \mathbb{R}^{d-1}$ and $\mathcal{M} = T^2 \times \mathbb{R}^{d-2}$.
