We report measured cross sections for radionuclides produced via proton irradiation of stacked nat La foils at the Isotope Production Facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Incident proton energies of approximately 100 MeV were degraded to ten energy positions ranging from 88 MeV to 46 MeV. HPGe gamma spectrometry was used to quantify residuals at LANL and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Of particular interest was the cross section of 134Ce due to its potential as the imaging component of a theranostic pair with 225Ac. Theoretical values from TENDL (2017) proton libraries are compared with the experimental cross section measurements of 134Ce and other radionuclides.

$^{72}$As is a promising positron emitter for diagnostic imaging that can be employed locally using a $^{72}$Se generator. However, current reaction pathways to $^{72}$Se have insufficient nuclear data for efficient production using regional 100-200 MeV high-intensity proton accelerators. In order to address this deficiency, stacked-target irradiations were performed at LBNL, LANL, and BNL to measure the production of the $^{72}$Se/$^{72}$As PET generator system via $^{75}$As(p,x) between 35 and 200 MeV. This work provides the most well-characterized excitation function for $^{75}$As(p,4n)$^{72}$Se starting from threshold. Additional focus was given to report the first measurements of $^{75}$As(p,x)$^{68}$Ge and bolster an already robust production capability for the highly valuable $^{68}$Ge/$^{68}$Ga PET generator. Thick target yield comparisons with prior established formation routes to both generators are made. In total, high-energy proton-induced cross sections are reported for 55 measured residual products from $^{75}$As, Cu, and Ti targets, where the latter two materials were present as monitor foils. These results were compared with literature data as well as the default theoretical calculations of the nuclear model codes TALYS, CoH, EMPIRE, and ALICE. Reaction modeling at these energies is typically unsatisfactory due to few prior published data and many interacting physics models. Therefore, a detailed assessment of the TALYS code was performed with simultaneous parameter adjustments applied according to a standardized procedure. Developing targeted α-therapies has the potential to transform how diseases are treated. In these interventions, targeting vectors are labelled with α-emitting radioisotopes that deliver destructive radiation discretely to diseased cells while simultaneously sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. Widespread implementation requires advances in non-invasive imaging technologies that rapidly assay therapeutics. A number of accelerator-based isotope production facilities utilize 100- to 200-MeV proton beams due to the high production rates enabled by high-intensity beam capabilities and the greater diversity of isotope production brought on by the long range of high-energy protons. However, nuclear reaction modeling at these energies can be challenging because of the interplay between different reaction modes and a lack of existing guiding cross section data. A Tri-lab collaboration has been formed among the Lawrence Berkeley, Los Alamos, and Brookhaven National Laboratories to address these complexities by characterizing charged-particle nuclear reactions relevant to the production of established and novel radioisotopes. In the inaugural collaboration experiments, stacked-targets of niobium foils were irradiated at the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (E$_p$=200 MeV) and the Los Alamos Isotope Production Facility (E$_p$=100 MeV) to measure $^{93}$Nb(p,x) cross sections between 50 and 200 MeV. The measured cross-section results were compared with literature data as well as the default calculations of the nuclear model codes TALYS, CoH, EMPIRE, and ALICE. We developed a standardized procedure that determines the reaction model parameters that best reproduce the most prominent reaction channels in a physically justifiable manner. The primary focus of the procedure was to determine the best parametrization for the pre-equilibrium two-component exciton model. This modeling study revealed a trend toward a relative decrease for internal transition rates at intermediate proton energies (E$_p$=20-60 MeV) in the current exciton model as compared to the default values. 225 Ac is a valuable medical radionuclide for targeted α therapy, but 227 Ac is an undesirable byproduct of an accelerator-based synthesis method under investigation. Sufficient detector sensitivity is critical for quantifying the trace impurity of 227 Ac , with the 227 Ac / 225 Ac activity ratio predicted to be approximately 0.15% by end-of-bombardment (EOB). Superconducting transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters offer high resolution energy spectroscopy using the normal-to-superconducting phase transition to measure small changes in temperature. By embedding 225 Ac production samples in a gold foil thermally coupled to a TES microcalorimeter we can measure the decay energies of the radionuclides embedded with high resolution and 100% detection efficiency. This technique, known as decay energy spectroscopy (DES), collapses several peaks from α decays into single Q-value peaks. In practice there are more complex factors in the interpretation of data using DES, which we will discuss herein. Using this technique we measured the EOB 227 Ac impurity to be (0.142 ± 0.005)% for a single production sample. This demonstration has shown that DES is a useful tool for quantitative measurements of complicated spectra.

This laboratory study investigated design features for artificial reefs to be used as enhanced juvenile lobster habitat. These features included size of brick shelters, size of rocks in rock piles, and the character of the underlying substrate. Experiments using brick shelters tested the ability of two lobster sizes (50-59 and 82-89 mm CL) to enlarge shelters by digging in sand-gravel bottom. If the gravel size was 1-2 cm both lobster sizes occupied > 90% of shelters by 22 h and the difference between occupancy at 2 and 22 h was not significant. If gravel size was 3-5 cm or 6-8 cm fewer shelters were occupied and the excavation of the sand/gravel took longer. Piles of three sizes of rocks were each placed on hard bottom as well as sand/1-2 cm gravel bottom, and the number of lobsters occupying each rock pile noted after 2-days. Six times more 70-79 mm CL lobsters and 1.7 times more 50-59 mm CL lobsters occupied rock piles on sand/gravel than hard bottom. For all rock sizes and substrates combined...

A novel model of arterial thrombosis was developed. A mechanical endothelium-denuding injury was created (using a scalpel blade) on harvested, freezer-stored rat carotid arteries. Vessel length of 5 mm. were grafted into the femoral arteries of recipient SpragueDawley rats using microvascular anastomotic technique. Patency rates in untreated animals were compared with those in animals receiving systemic aspirin or heparin. The control group patency after 2 hours of flow was 15%, while grafts in aspirin- and heparin-treated animals achieved 35% and 95% patency rates, respectively. Uninjured non-frozen carotid grafts in untreated animals yielded a 95% patency rate, while frozen grafts achieved an 80% patency. Therapeutic levels of aspirin, heparin, and urokinase were confirmed through tail bleeding and whole blood clotting tests, as well as platelet aggregation studies and scanning electron microscopy of the graft lumenal surfaces. A long-term series using syngeneic grafts placed in recipients (Lewis-to-Lewis) and employing systemic heparinization demonstrated maintenance of patency for 4 weeks. Scanning electron microscopy revealed good re-endothelialization, well advanced by one week. Histology confirmed the regrowth of endothelial cells, but showed sparse cellular repopulation of medial and adventitial layers. The mechanical injury model was compared to enzymatic deendothelialization (using trypsin or collagenase), for which patency rates were similar (10% and 0%, respectively). Trypsin de-endothelialized vessels were tested in vitro for the amount of active trypsin remaining bound to the lumenal surface; no detectable activity was found when trypsin inhibitor was applied following trypsin treatment. The versatility of allowing both in vitro evaluation and in vivo patency assessment demonstrates the uniqueness and value of this new model, offering an avenue toward more direct investigations of surface-mediated thrombotic processes.
