AbstractParents with intellectual disabilities face many challenges when coming into contact with child protection systems. This article, written by a parent with an intellectual disability and her allies, looks at what the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation (the Commission) had to say about the topic. Examining the Final Report of the Commission and drawing upon the testimony of an Aboriginal mother with an intellectual disability, the authors agree with the Commission that urgent action is needed to address the over-representation of First Nations Australian families who have a parent with a disability in Australian child protection systems. However, the Commission also needed to pay attention to the needs of all parents with disabilities, and in particular, parents with intellectual disabilities. Person-centred planning (PCP) has underpinned disability service provision in many Western countries for the past 30 years. For many people with an intellectual disability, family members are central to this process and are important allies in facilitating positive change. This article presents findings from an evaluation of a family resourcing and capacity building project in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Accounts from families show the merits of such work, but family efforts can be undermined by apathy and discrimination to disability from extended family, community and service providers. Asking families to be the primary support in PCP initiatives may potentially ignore the impacts of structural and psycho-emotional disablism on all family members. For families to support people with intellectual disability in PCP, there is a need to acknowledge and respond to the material, cultural and personal challenges for all family members in planning processes.

This paper reviews existing approaches to inclusive, co-produced and agentic research in disability, and shares related reflections from a co-produced digital storytelling project. The project, which included self-advocates with intellectual disabilities, academics, and support staff was undertaken in Queensland, Australia, in 2018. This paper reflects on the potential and limitations of inclusive research methods by, and with, people with intellectual disabilities. We reflect on and analyse our experiences using a co-production framework and consider how this project increased participation and agency by, with, and for people with intellectual disabilities. The paper concludes with a summary of learnings and recommendations for future co-produced research activities including the importance of taking time to build capacity and establish the required foundations for more inclusive research. Historically, researchers tended to conduct research on people with intellectual disabilities instead of researching with people as co-researchers. Time and deliberate efforts are needed for all people involved in co-produced research, be they people with disabilities, family and carers, advocates, disability workers or academic researchers, to work together in ways which share power and decision-making. This project reflects on the processes used to co-produce individual digital stories and a group digital story about the activities of a long-established group of self-advocates. This includes reflecting on how the digital stories were shared and received; and how the research findings have been communicated, to date, including at a national conference about intellectual disability. People with an intellectual disability in prison can be at increased risk of victimisation, segregation and isolation (Mullen ). Prison systems usually have very few resources to cater to this group's particular needs, and many people may re-enter the community with little or no rehabilitation, poor social connections, poor mental health and little chance in finding employment and living a crime-free life (Baldry et al. ). Gathering the lived expertise of ex-prisoners with an intellectual disability can help others to better understand these experiences. This article is about Anna Boodle's story of imprisonment in Queensland, Australia. Anna participated in a larger PhD study on the life stories of ex-prisoners with an intellectual disability. It is apparent from her story, and the other stories in the study, that there is a need for more humane responses to people with an intellectual disability who offend. Anna's story is a tale of hope to others that a good life is possible after imprisonment.

AbstractPeople with intellectual disabilities find it difficult to find meaningful work, to feel safe in the workplace, and to feel like they belong. In this article, two self-advocates with intellectual disabilities and two of their supporters discuss what meaningful work for people with intellectual disabilities means to them. Several recommendations from the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation (the Commission)) on employment for people with disabilities are discussed. The authors also call for better working conditions, more choice in the types of employment, and equitable wages. The Australian Government needs to have a vision of employment for people with intellectual disabilities and they need to involve people with intellectual disabilities in making the changes that are needed. Young people with cognitive disabilities (YPWCD) are overrepresented as offenders in the criminal justice system. However, most existing research on this topic examines overrepresentation in courts and corrections rather than at the police gatekeeping stage of the criminal justice process. Furthermore, while the views of other groups have been documented, the perspectives of service providers - who often bear witness to YPWCD's interactions with police - have yet to be examined. This research addresses this gap by analysing qualitative interviews with service providers from Queensland, Australia, using the three most common theoretical explanations for the overrepresentation of PWCD (the susceptibility, differential treatment and psychosocial disadvantage theses) as an analytic framework. A number of implications emerged from the study. There is a need to take a critical and intersectional lens to YPWCD's experiences, as well as to equip police to work with YPWCD to de-escalate interactions with this group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
