Abstract

Although peer-led health education is common, the long-term impact of being a peer educator is under-studied. The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate the long-term impact of being a peer sexual health educator. The sample consists of African American young adults who had served in this role. Being a peer sexual health educator had perceptual, cognitive, and relational impacts. This study has implications for the design and evaluation of sexual health programs.

Abstract

This article addresses the planning, implementation, and recommendations of one medical library in reaching out to users in the mobile environment. A three-pronged approach was adopted by the Mobile Committee that addressed this issue and included the creation of a mobile web page , Mobile LibGuide , and recurring library drop-in support sessions targeted at specific student populations. Attendance at drop-in sessions was popular as was the use of the Mobile LibGuide. Increased use of the mobile web page is anticipated as a result of inclusion in The George Washington University Mobile App in spring 2011.

Abstract

In order to reach out to diverse segments of the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library's patron base, librarians developed new initiatives and roles to expand their scope of responsibilities. New outreach initiatives included a film series with panel discussions, an instructional technology series by faculty for faculty, two exhibits, an annual art show, and a faculty authors reception. Each initiative broadened the skills of the participating librarians, extended the presence of the library into the community, and brought individuals from different corners of the institution together at the various events.

Abstract

Computer-based systems (CBS) can provide information to help individuals analyze their health care needs and make decisions about management of health problems. This article discusses the development of a CBS that delivers an individualized educational intervention for continence health promotion. System development included cycles of prototype design, testing, analysis, and redesign. Knowledge acquisition, representation methods, and design decisions are discussed. Participants completed 4 rounds of usability testing and a pilot test, which resulted in enhancements to both the CBS and the expert system feature that produced individualized feedback. This iterative design process involved users throughout system development. User involvement resulted in a tutorial to explain navigation and other features of the CBS, graphics to enhance the written message, and clarification of continence-related content. The procedures resulted in an informative, usable product; they can be used to develop systems that provide information about symptom self-management for other health conditions.
