Increasing concern about safety in the workplace has led recently to government-mandated guidelines for chemical hazard information dissemination. The primary format for chemical information for workers is the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). This article reviews the need for MSDSs, details the type of information found on them, includes sample MSDSs for collodion and acetone, and outlines the hazards inherent in these compounds. In the final section, we provide recommendations for safe handling of collodion and acetone, giving specifics on personnel education, ventilation requirements, storage, appropriate responses to a spill or fire, work area procedures, and disposal.
