Tomini Bay in Gorontalo offers significant potential for amphidromous goby-fry, a group of fish found in at least five estuaries in the area, namely Bone-Bolango, Paguyaman, Bilungala, Tombulilato, and Taludaa Estuaries. Preliminary results were limited to only two locations in estuarine waters, namely the Bone-Bolango and Paguyaman rivers. Further exploration of goby-fry species in various locations within Tomini Bay is essential to enhance knowledge about the abundance and aid conservation efforts. Therefore, this study identified the goby-fry species and created their distribution map in the waters of Tomini Bay Gorontalo. The samples used were obtained from daily catches of fishermen in the five estuaries during the recruitment period from February to September 2022. These samples were categorized based on their morphological similarities and specific melanophore patterns. Distinct groups with different melanophore patterns from those previously reported were identified as newly recorded species, photographed, and described in terms of their morphology. Furthermore, two specimens from each newly recorded species underwent molecular identification using the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene for DNA amplification and were analyzed through the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) method. The phylogenetic tree was constructed using the Maximum Likelihood Method. The results showed the existence of nongoby-fry species caught together with goby fry school. A total of 75,881 goby-fry and 1,687 nongoby-fry were successfully collected. Among the goby-fry species, 13 were identified, including three new records, namely Eleotris fusca (Forster, 1801), Sicyopterus microcephalus (Bleeker, 1855), and Sicyopus zosterophorus (Bleeker, 1856). This study also documented the existence of nongoby-fry species, namely Anguilla celebesensis (Kaup, 1856), Moringua microchir (Bleeker, 1853), and Microphis leiaspis (Bleeker, 1854). It significantly contributed to the understanding of fish biodiversity in Tomini Bay.

El estudio del tracto digestivo de especies de la familia Eleotridae ha sido poco abordado a pesar de su importancia para entender la fisiología de los peces, su nutrición, asociaciones tróficas y aplicación en acuicultura. El chame Dormitator latifrons es una de las especies de la familia Eleotridae con gran potencial para la acuicultura, de la cual se conoce muy poco sobre su sistema digestivo. Este trabajo describe la morfología e histología del tracto digestivo de D. latifrons y compara las variables morfométricas entre estadios y sexos, en 127 ejemplares recolectados en un sistema de cultivo. A cada pez se le registraron los datos biométricos y posteriormente se extrajo el tracto digestivo el cual fue descrito, medido por secciones, y se fijaron fragmentos de tejido en formalina neutra al 10 % para análisis histológico. Las muestras de tejido fueron procesadas por la técnica de inclusión en parafina y teñidas con hematoxilina y eosina; los datos morfométricos fueron comparados entre estadios y sexos. El tracto digestivo estuvo compuesto por boca, faringe, esófago, estómago, intestino y ano; y cada sección presentó las cuatro capas de tejido concéntrico (mucosa, submucosa, muscular y adventicia/serosa) características del sistema digestivo de los peces. Morfológicamente lo más distintivo fue la presencia de un estómago tubular en forma de “I”, bien delimitado y con abundantes glándulas gástricas tubulares. La longitud y el índice intestinales fueron significativamente diferentes entre estadios y sexos, posicionando a los juveniles en el nivel trófico omnívoro mientras que los adultos se posicionan como herbívoros; el análisis por sexo mostró un índice intestinal significativamente menor en las hembras respecto a los machos. Los resultados muestran un comportamiento politrófico del chame D. latifrons que podría estar asociado al hábitat, a la disponibilidad de alimento, o la madurez sexual. La presencia de un estómago funcional permite clasificar a esta especie como gástrica y abre la posibilidad de estudios futuros sobre la fisiología digestiva de esta especie y composición de la dieta idónea para organismos cultivados, temas hasta ahora muy poco atendidos.

Abstract A little-studied characteristic of the Mexican native fish Dormitator latifrons is the effect that the color of the bottom or lining of ponds or tubs can have on their growth and blood parameters under controlled conditions. After a quarantine period in prophylactic treatment, an initial assay was performed. The organisms were grouped into four treatments (white, yellow, blue, and black) in triplicate, with 30 individuals with an average weight of 34.7± 2.5 g and average size of 12.5 ± 1.5 cm per tank. The trial lasted 60 days, after which a final biometry to all specimens and blood extractions to six random organisms per tank were performed. The following hematological and blood chemistry parameters were evaluated: erythrocytes, cell counts, and differential counts, as well as glucose, albumin, a/g ratio, and total proteins. Final weight, weight gain, and specific growth rate presented statistical differences between treatments (p0.05). The growth results suggest that dark pond bottoms promote the adaptation of Dormitator latifrons by allowing it to avoid detection by predators through the adoption of a cryptic coloration. However, the species shows a great capacity for crypsis, being able to change its pigmentation to adapt to different bottom colors.

Objectives. Evaluate experimentally the effect of the food ration on the accumulation of total ammonia nitrogen and the survival of D. latifrons. Materials and methods. A completely randomized experimental design was implemented, without 72 h water replacement, 10 fish per replicate and three replicates per treatment, with feed rations of 2, 4, 6 and 8% in relation to biomass and 35% protein balanced shrimp feed. Water quality variables and survival were recorded every 24 h. Results. Total ammonia varied between 1.05 and 7.80 mg*L-1, while non-ionized ammonium varied between 0.33 and 2.27 mg*L-1. Total ammoniacal nitrogen (5.16±1.70 mg*L-1) and non-ionized ammonium (1.56±0.48 mg*L-1) were significantly (p<0.05) higher in the 2% ration; however, this ration showed the highest survival (56–100%). Survival was reduced in all treatments; rations of 6 and 8% recorded mortality from 24 h. LD50% at 72 h was estimated with a food ration of 5.54% with respect to biomass. Conclusions. Dormitator latifrons resists concentrations of non-ionised ammonium above 1 mg*L-1. In intensive cultures of D. latifrons, a food ration less than 4% of biomass should be used, with water replacements at least every 48 h to avoid mortalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objetivos. Evaluar el efecto de la ración alimentaria en la acumulación de nitrógeno amoniacal total y la supervivencia de juveniles de D. latifrons en condiciones experimentales. Materiales y métodos. Se implementó un diseño experimental completamente aleatorizado, sin recambio de agua por 72 h, 10 peces por réplica y tres réplicas por tratamiento, con raciones de alimentación del 2, 4, 6 y 8 % en relación con la biomasa y alimento balanceado para camarón al 35 % proteína. Diariamente se registraron los parámetros de calidad del agua y se contabilizaron los organismos muertos. Resultados. Las concentraciones de nitrógeno amoniacal total oscilaron entre 1.05 y 7.80 mg*L-1 y el amonio no ionizado osciló entre 0.33 y 2.27 mg*L-1. La ración de alimentación al 2 % mostró valores de nitrógeno amoniacal total (5.16 ± 1.70 mg*L-1) y amonio no ionizado (1.56 ± 0.48 mg*L-1) significativamente (p < 0.05) mayor al resto de tratamientos; sin embargo, mostró las mayores supervivencias (100 – 56 %). La supervivencia se redujo en todos los tratamientos; las raciones de 6 y 8 % registraron mortalidad desde las 24 h. La DL50 % a las 72 h se estimó con una ración de alimento del 5.54 % con respecto a la biomasa. Conclusiones. Dormitator latifrons resiste concentraciones de amonio no ionizado por encima de 1 mg*L-1. En cultivos intensivos de D. latifrons se debe emplear una ración alimentaria menor al 4 % respecto a la biomasa, con recambios de agua al menos cada 48 h para evitar mortalidades.

The early Miocene palaeolake Manuherikia in Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand is a prime source for reconstructing the terrestrial and freshwater biota of past Zealandia. Otoliths of fishes that once lived in this lake system were first described in 2012. Here we report the results of extensive additional sampling resulting in a total of 16,500 fish otoliths from a wide set of stratigraphic levels and environmental settings within the Bannockburn Formation near St Bathans. Six new species are described: Galaxias crassus, Galaxias naviculus, Galaxias nitidus, Galaxias polei, Galaxias tholus, Mataichthys asymmetricus. The entire freshwater otolith-based fish fauna of the Bannockburn Formation now encompasses 17 species, 10 in Galaxiidae, 2 in Prototroctidae and 5 in Eleotridae; all families present in the freshwater systems of New Zealand today. Correlation with putative related extant taxa reveal that the fishes from the Bannockburn Formation were relatively large, often at the upper margin of the extant sizes of fishes in the respective groups or even larger. This 'Gulliver' fish fauna is consistent with other fossil and extant 'gulliverisms' observed in various Zealandian biota. Environmental and putative evolutionary explanations, aspects of the taphocoenosis and possible stratigraphic implications of the otolith assemblages are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe two new species in the genus Gobiomorphus, a radiation of fresh and brackish water gudgeons known from Australia and New Zealand. These species are a prominent component of New Zealand's freshwater ichthyofauna and most are widely distributed throughout both the North and South Islands. Two of the inland species, G. breviceps and G. basalis, are composed of disjunct northern and southern populations that are distinguishable with molecular data. We examine individuals from across the ranges of both species, identify morphological differences between them, and describe two new species: Gobiomorphus dinae n. sp. (distinct from G. basalis) and Gobiomorphus mataraerore n. sp. (distinct from G. breviceps). Although the species are similar, they vary in dorsal spine count (G. dinae) and pectoral fin ray count (G. mataraerore). We provide mitochondrial COI sequences for each species pair to facilitate identifications by DNA barcoding. These species represent examples of divergence in allopatry, with diagnostic characters arising over the last 2−5 million years in the G. breviceps/G. mataraerore pair, and fewer than 2 million years in the G. basalis/G. dinae pair. We also designate a lectotype for G. basalis (the paralectotype is G. cotidianus) in order to clarify confusion surrounding the original syntypes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. To identify and determine the infection parameters of the metacestode Parvitaenia in different culture stages of Dormitator latifrons and to evaluate the histological damage caused by this parasite. Materials and methods. Forty-five specimens were examined, 15 in each phase: prebreeding, pre-fattening, and fattening, to identify the metacestode and tissue damage caused using conventional parasitology and histology techniques. Prevalence, intensity, and median intensity were calculated. A Mood’s median test evaluated the difference between intensity per culture phase. Total length, weight, condition factor, and hepatosomatic index were correlated with intensity by linear correlation analysis. Liver fragments were evaluated to identify the tissue damage. Results. A total of 29,151 cestodes were found and were identified as Parvitaenia cochlearii. Cestode prevalence was 100% in each culture phase. The median intensity ranged from 22 to 625 individuals and showed significant differences between culture phases (X² = 29.391; p<0.0001). Intensity showed moderate positive correlation with total fish length (r² = 0.45; p<0.05) and low correlation with weight (r² = 0.38; p<0.05). In less parasitized livers, fibrosis and congestion around the cysts were observed, while in livers with high levels of infection, parenchymal reduction, fibrosis, and increase in melanomacrophage centers were observed. Conclusions. This is the first report of P. cochlearii on D. latifrons in aquaculture. We suggest that there is a tendency for cestode accumulation during fish growth, which could have negative implications for trade. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A baseline survey of Bolano Sau Lake in Parigi Moutong District, Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia in 2019 found an eleotrid goby (local name payangka) with characters conforming to the genus Giuris, long considered monophyletic as G. margaritacea/G. margaritaceus but recently found to comprise at least eight species. This study focused on the molecular (DNA barcoding) identification and phenotypic characters of the payangka. Methods: Payangka samples were collected from August to December 2019 in collaboration with local fishermen, weighed and measured, and preserved in 75% ethanol. Length, weight, sex (n=111) and 17 morphometric characters/six meristic counts (n=42) were recorded. DNA barcoding was performed on a fin clipping preserved in 96% ethanol. Homologous nucleotide sequences were obtained from public (GenBank and BOLD) databases, analysis conducted in MEGA X, and phylogenetic trees edited in the Interactive Tree of Life (iToL). Results: Within the deeply divided Giuris clade, the payangka sequence resolved into a sub-clade identified as Giuris laglaizei (Sauvage 1880), a recently resurrected taxon, based on a sequence provided by Philippe Keith. The length-weight relationship (L = 0.0087∙W3.162) indicated mildly allometric positive growth. Size distribution differed significantly between male and female fish with significantly larger mean size of males (13.56 cm) than females (11.62 cm). The meristic formula was: D VI-I,8 A I,8 P 13 V I,5 C15. Phylogenetic analysis indicated four Giuris species in wetlands around Tomini Bay and five in Sulawesi. Conclusions: This first record of G. laglaizei in Indonesia advances knowledge of Wallacean and Indo-Pacific Gobiiformes biogeography and highlights the need for a revision of the conservation status of the taxa currently grouped under Giuris margaritacea/G. margaritaceus in the IUCN Red List and FishBase databases. The data will inform biodiversity and fisheries management at local and regional levels.

Abstract Background Carp gudgeons (genus Hypseleotris) are a prominent part of the Australian freshwater fish fauna, with species distributed around the western, northern, and eastern reaches of the continent. We infer a calibrated phylogeny of the genus based on nuclear ultraconserved element (UCE) sequences and using Bayesian estimation of divergence times, and use this phylogeny to investigate geographic patterns of diversification with GeoSSE. The southeastern species have hybridized to form hemiclonal lineages, and we also resolve relationships of hemiclones and compare their phylogenetic placement in the UCE phylogeny with a hypothesis based on complete mitochondrial genomes. We then use phased SNPs extracted from the UCE sequences for population structure analysis among the southeastern species and hemiclones. Results Hypseleotris cyprinoides, a widespread euryhaline species known from throughout the Indo-Pacific, is resolved outside the remainder of the species. Two Australian radiations comprise the bulk of Hypseleotris, one primarily in the northwestern coastal rivers and a second inhabiting the southeastern region including the Murray–Darling, Bulloo-Bancannia and Lake Eyre basins, plus coastal rivers east of the Great Dividing Range. Our phylogenetic results reveal cytonuclear discordance between the UCE and mitochondrial hypotheses, place hemiclone hybrids among their parental taxa, and indicate that the genus Kimberleyeleotris is nested within the northwestern Hypseleotris radiation along with three undescribed species. We infer a crown age for Hypseleotris of 17.3 Ma, date the radiation of Australian species at roughly 10.1 Ma, and recover the crown ages of the northwestern (excluding H. compressa) and southeastern radiations at 5.9 and 7.2 Ma, respectively. Range-dependent diversification analyses using GeoSSE indicate that speciation and extinction rates have been steady between the northwestern and southeastern Australian radiations and between smaller radiations of species in the Kimberley region and the Arnhem Plateau. Analysis of phased SNPs confirms inheritance patterns and reveals high levels of heterozygosity among the hemiclones. Conclusions The northwestern species have restricted ranges and likely speciated in allopatry, while the southeastern species are known from much larger areas, consistent with peripatric speciation or allopatric speciation followed by secondary contact. Species in the northwestern Kimberley region differ in shape from those in the southeast, with the Kimberley species notably more elongate and slender than the stocky southeastern species, likely due to the different topographies and flow regimes of the rivers they inhabit.

Objetivo. Identificar y determinar los parámetros de infección del metacestodo Parvitaenia en diferentes fases de cultivo de chame Dormitator latifrons y evaluar los daños histológicos ocasionados por este parásito. Materiales y métodos. Se revisaron 45 ejemplares, 15 en fase de pre-cría, 15 en pre-engorda y 15 en engorda para identificar el parásito mediante técnicas de parasitología convencional; y se calcularon los parámetros de infección prevalencia e intensidad promedio. Los daños tisulares fueron evaluados fijando fragmentos de hígado y procesados con la técnica de inclusión en parafina. Se evaluó la diferencia entre la intensidad por fase de cultivo mediante la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis. La longitud total, peso y factor de condición de Fulton se correlacionó con la intensidad mediante un análisis de correlación lineal. Resultados. Se encontró un total de 29151 cestodos, identificados como Parvitaenia cochlearii. La prevalencia del cestodo fue de 100 % en todas las fases de cultivo. This is the first report of plastics ingestion by the neotropical fish Dormitator latifrons. The stomach contents of 20 specimens (10 males and 10 females) collected in La Segua wetland (Ecuador) were assessed visually. Frequency of occurrence (FO) of plastics was 50% and the plastic load (PL) was between 5 and 55 particles per individual. Ninety-seven percent of plastic particles found were microplastics (<5.0 mm), and 3% were larger. No significant differences were found in PL between females and males (>0.05). No significant correlation was found between fish size and PL (>0.05). Fibers were the most frequently observed category, and transparent and blue colors were the most abundant. The results suggest high levels of plastic pollution in waters of La Segua wetland that may represent a threat to both the ecosystem and the people who rely on it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Se realizó un trabajo experimental con juveniles de chame Dormitator latifrons con el objeto de evaluar la sustitución de harina de pescado en un alimento balanceado por harina de torta de sacha inchi (Plukenetia volubilis) y su efecto en el crecimiento y la supervivencia en cultivo intensivo. Un total de 360 organismos con peso promedio de 49,7 ± 4,42 g, fueron distribuidos al azar en doce tanques de geomembrana de 2 m de diámetro con 2000 L de agua/tanque, con una densidad de siembra de 15 chames/m3, durante 100 días. Se utilizaron cuatro dietas experimentales con 35% de proteína cruda: D1 (50% harina de sacha inchi-HSI y 50% harina de pescado-HP), D2 (75% HSI y 25% HP), D3 (100% HSI) y DC (100% HP), cada una con tres réplicas. Al final del estudio no hubo diferencias significativas tanto en las supervivencias (> 98,89%), como en incremento de peso de los peces entre los tratamientos dietéticos, pero con una elevada variabilidad de respuestas (6,9 - 14,2 g). Adicionalmente, las relaciones longitud total-peso total de las diferentes dietas no mostraron variaciones significativas, sugiriendo condiciones fisiológicas similares. Las tasas de crecimiento en el presente estudio son menores a las reportadas en investigaciones previas con piensos comerciales, dónde la densidad de siembra fue menor (hasta la mitad de la utilizada en el presente estudio). Los resultados muestran que, el uso de harina de sacha inchi es equiparable al uso de harina de pescado, lo cual sugiere la factibilidad del uso de sacha inchi como sustituto de harina de pescado en dietas balanceadas, aun en altas proporciones.

The rivers of southeastern Australia host a species complex within the carp gudgeon genus Hypseleotris that includes parental species and hemiclonal hybrid lineages. These hemiclones can be difficult to distinguish from their parent taxa, making delineation of species unusually difficult. We approach this historical taxonomic problem by using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping to distinguish individuals of each species and hemiclones, enabling us to quantify the variation among evolutionary lineages and assign names to the species. Hypseleotris klunzingeri remains valid and does not have any hemiclones. We describe Hypseleotris bucephala and Hypseleotris gymnocephala from the Murray-Darling Basin and Hypseleotris acropinna from the Murray-Darling as well as eastern coastal streams north of the Mary River, part of the range attributed to H. galii. We further split H. galii to distinguish a species from the Mary River, Hypseleotris moolooboolaensis. We designate a neotype and redescribe H. galii due to uncertainty about the source and species identity of specimens used in the original description. We reconcile previous taxonomies, provide new common names for parental species, and advocate using the scientific names of both parents when referring to the hemiclone hybrids to avoid confusion with previous common names that did not distinguish parental taxa and hemiclones.

Sulawesi is an island famous for its biodiversity, including many endemic species. In particular, Sulawesi has the highest number of gobies in the world, including species with potential as food and/or ornamental fishes. The exploration of freshwater ichthyofauna is important in the context of Indonesian and global biodiversity. This research aimed to identify gobies found in the Luwuk Banggai area of Central Sulawesi, as a contribution to the exploration of Indonesian ichthyofaunal biodiversity. Gobies were sampled from January to March 2019 in the Biak and Koyoan Rivers. The sampled fish were measured and identified based on morphological characteristics. A total of 52 specimens were collected, and identified as belonging to 17 species within two families, the Gobiidae and Eleotridae. Gobies from the Koyoan River comprised 32 specimens from 8 species, while 20 specimens belonging to species were found in the Biak River. Only two species were found in both rivers: Stiphodon semoni and Sicyopterus lagocephalus. These results augment the body of knowledge regarding the presence and distribution of gobies in Indonesia

The present work is a review of the literature on the native Mexican fish Dormitator latifrons. The aim is to contribute to the integration and systematization of current knowledge to make it easier to identify existing knowledge gaps and breakthroghs Moreover, promote the successful cultivation and protection of this species whose consumption is increasing in Latin America. A review of the articles related to D. latifrons published in international and regional databases was carried out. The articles reviewed focus on taxonomy and systematics, phylogenetic, geographic distribution, ecology, physiology, reproduction, development, pathology, health, and the technologies used to cultivate this fish species. The conclusion is that, even though the cultivation of D. latifrons is of commercial interest in some countries, there are still significant gaps in our knowledge of biology and, consequently, the domestication potential of the species. Groups of Dormitator latifrons in triplicate (4.1 ± 2.0 g and 6.2 ± 1.0 cm) were fed experimental diets containing four levels of substitution of fishmeal (FM) by soybean meal (SM) (0, 40, 70, and 100%, respectively). The diets were formulated to be isoproteic (35% crude protein) and isolipidic (8.0% crude lipids). The effect of each treatment on growth was evaluated and its implications on the cost of feeding. After 60 days of feeding, there were no significant differences in the fish's proximate composition (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences between the diets (P < 0.05) in the evaluated biological indices: total growth increase (TGI), specific growth rate (SGR), thermal growth coefficient (TGC), and survival (%). Feeding costs decreased significantly as the proportion of soybean meal in the diet increased. The results indicated that substituting FM by up to 100% of SM can promote adequate growth in D. latifrons without affecting body composition and survival while also reducing operative costs during the fattening process. The Lago Mare phase at the end of the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) in the Mediterranean has long been known for the Paratethyan affinities of its biota. The taxonomic level of these affinities and their origin, however, is subject to divergent interpretations. Here, we have studied otoliths of the Gobioidei from late Miocene and early Pliocene deposits from Italy and Greece and revised earlier studies including time-equivalent data from Romania and NW Turkey. Nowadays, gobies constitute the most speciose marine fish family in Europe and the most diverse endemic family in the Ponto-Caspian region. Furthermore, they are highly adapted to nearshore shallow marine, brackish, and freshwater environments, which makes them excellent candidates to explore short-term connections of waterways of different nature. The normal marine late Tortonian and pre-evaporitic Messinian deposits of the studied Italian and Greek locations contained a rich and diverse goby assamblage, but species with Paratethyan affinities were very rare and possibly originated from connections during the early Serravallian (late Badenian) and early Messinian (early Meotian). A rare fauna from a paralic environment from Cessaniti, Calabria, similar to the mangrove environments found in the present-day Guinea coastal area, revealed two species of the family Eleotridae and no gobies with Paratethyan affinities. Cessaniti provides a unique opportunity to recognize the presence of this type of environmental context with a unique gobioid assemblage in the Neogene of Europe. The shallow-water brackish-influenced sediments of Strada degli Archi just below the MSC show an increasing influence of Paratethyan gobiid taxa (Proterorhinus yigitbasi, Zosterisessor exsul n. sp.), which are not present in time-equivalent normal marine environments, but have also been identified in the Dacic Basin of Romania. Sediments of the stage 3 ot the MSC, especially those that accumulated during the Lago Mare event, were dominated by a diverse goby assemblage with Paratethyan affinities, while indigenous Mediterranean goby taxa disappeared probably because of the lack of suitable conditions for neritic demersal stenohaline fishes, except for the nektonic Aphia minuta. The sediments of the stage 3 of the MSC also included in one particular location and level the unusual Enigmacottus socialis n. gen., n. sp., a putative member of the family Psychrolutidae of uncertain origin, which constitutes about 70% of all otoliths obtained from that interval in Italy. Beginning with the Zanclean, the goby assemblage of the Mediterranean shows an almost exclusively Atlantic-Mediterranean composition. A total of 15 new species are described, 12 in the family Gobiidae, two of the Eleotridae, and one putative Psychrolutidae. We assessed the prevalence of life history variation across four of the five native amphidromous Hawai'ian gobioids to determine whether some or all exhibit evidence of partial migration. Analysis of otolith Sr.: Ca concentrations affirmed that all are amphidromous and revealed evidence of partial migration in three of the four species. We found that 25% of Lentipes concolor (n = 8), 40% of Eleotris sandwicensis (n = 20) and 29% of Stenogobius hawaiiensis (n = 24) did not exhibit a migratory life‐history. In contrast, all individuals of Sicyopterus stimpsoni (n = 55) included in the study went to sea as larvae. Lentipes concolor exhibited the shortest mean larval duration (LD) at 87 days, successively followed by E. sandwicensis (mean LD = 102 days), S. hawaiiensis (mean LD = 114 days) and S. stimpsoni (mean LD = 120 days). These findings offer a fresh perspective on migratory life histories that can help improve efforts to conserve and protect all of these and other at‐risk amphidromous species that are subject to escalating anthropogenic pressures in both freshwater and marine environments. Abstract Gyrodactylus mojarrae n. sp. is described from the gills of the Neotropical cichlids Thorichthys maculipinnis, Rocio octofasciata, Vieja zonata and V. fenestrata from several localities across southern Mexico. The new species is erected on the basis of the morphology of the haptoral elements (anchors, bars and hooks), and its phylogenetic position within the Gyrodactylidae is evaluated based on the analysis of partial sequences of the ITS1, 5.8 rRNA gene and ITS2. Gyrodactylus mojarrae n. sp. differs from other congeneric species by having hooks with a straight shaft and recurved point, pointed toe and convex heel, presence of reduced superficial anchor roots, by the number and disposition of spinelets of the male copulatory organ, and the absence of shield and lateral processes of the superficial bar. Molecular circumscription of isolates of G. mojarrae n. sp. from different host and hydrological basins showed that these isolates are conspecific and represent a distinct lineage from other congeners, including newly sequenced isolates of Gyodactylus sp. A and Gyrodactylus sp. B from Astyanax mexicanus (Characidae) and Gobiomorus dormitor (Eleotridae), respectively. Genetic affinities of Gyodactylus sp. A and B indicate that they might represent undescribed species infecting freshwater fish from the Americas. The practice of modern evolutionary and ecological research is interdisciplinary, with the process of evolution underpinning the diversity on display. However, the inference of evolutionary patterns can be difficult owing to their historical nature. When the biological units and evolutionary relationships involved are unclear, interpreting any ecological and biological data can be problematic. Herein we explore resulting issues when evolutionary theories rely on an unclear or incomplete biological framework, using some Australian freshwater fish (carp gudgeons: Hypseleotris, Eleotridae) as an example. Specifically, recent theories regarding the role of developmental plasticity on ontogeny and speciation have focused on this group. However, carp gudgeons have complex, and as yet incompletely understood, species boundaries and reproductive biology. Even basic data for the recognised taxa, relating to their phylogenetic relationships, life histories and species distributions, are unclear, have often been misinterpreted and are still in the process of being assembled. Combined, these factors make carp gudgeons a relatively poor group on which to apply more advanced evolutionary theories at the moment, such as the role of developmental plasticity in diversification. The observation of the cephalic free neuromast pattern of the genus Eleotris allows to classify the specimens in different groups of species but, as diagnostic characters without overlap are scarce, the morphological identification of the species is difficult. However, genetic analyses, particularly with barcoding (COI), facilitate the discrimination between species. In a recent study on the phylogeography of Eleotris fusca Bloch & Schneider, 1801 in the Indo-Pacific area, two species have been revealed although they present the same cephalic free neuromast pattern. The first one included specimens mainly from the Pacific Ocean and the second one, specimens from the Indian Ocean. They are separated with a mean pairwise divergence of 5.6% and present 32 diagnostic nucleotide substitutions in the 585 bp of COI sequenced. After the examination of all the available types of the synonym of E. fusca from the Indian Ocean, we revalidated the name of Eleotris klunzingerii Pfeffer, 1893. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Allomogurnda multicincta, n. sp. is described on the basis of 168 specimens, 11-36 mm SL, collected from Malas Creek, a small tributary of the Sepik River, Papua New Guinea. Morphological and preliminary genetic comparisons indicate it is closely related to A. nesolepis, which is widely distributed in northern New Guinea. The new species differs from A. nesolepis and all other members of the genus in typically having fewer predorsal scales (15-18 versus 15-24, but usually 19-21 for A. nesolepis and usually 18-27 for other congeners). Moreover, unlike other members of the genus, which have a peculiar scale orientation in the interorbital region, featuring many scales with freely exposed anterior margins, only the anteriormost 1-3 scales exhibit this condition in A. multicincta.
