La pandemia provocada por la COVID-19 ha acelerado la digitalización de la educación, revelando varias deficiencias en el proceso. Una de las principales preocupaciones es la falta de preparación de muchos docentes para desarrollar una evaluación educativa de calidad en entornos online, lo cual es fundamental para mejorar el aprendizaje del estudiante. Por ello, este trabajo pretende explorar la importancia que el profesorado de las universidades madrileñas otorga a la evaluación educativa, y su conocimiento y práctica evaluativa. Se realizó un estudio mixto de corte descriptivo transversal (n = 139) mediante un cuestionario online elaborado ad hoc (α = .70). Los datos cuantitativos se analizaron mediante técnicas de estadística descriptiva e inferencial; para los de corte cualitativo se establecieron tres categorías: uso, características y estudiantes. Los hallazgos del estudio indican que la mayor parte del profesorado considera que los docentes universitarios poseen escasa formación sobre evaluación educativa (79.1%), por lo que se requiere una instrucción específica (93.6%) que incida en cómo realizar una evaluación adecuada en entornos online (89.2%). Esto coincide con investigaciones previas que resaltan la falta de formación como una de las principales dificultades que enfrenta el profesorado, resultando vital su actualización y formación continua para garantizar una educación superior de calidad.

IntroductionThe prevalence of myopia has increased significantly in recent years including an earlier onset of myopia development on the pediatric population. The main objective of the study is to compare CUVAF (Conjunctival Ultraviolet Autofluorescence) in children with and without myopia to validate its usefulness as an outdoor protective biomarker.MethodsA case–control observational study was conducted in a child cohort from subjects that attended to the Ophthalmology Department of Clínica Universidad de Navarra for an ophthalmological examination. The general exclusion criteria were (among others): amblyopia, congenital myopia, general ophthalmic disease, and any conjunctival alteration that might difficult the measurement of the CUVAF area. All participants underwent an automatic objective refraction under cycloplegic effect, biometry to measure axial length (AL) and central corneal radius (CCR), and completed a questionnaire about their lifestyle habits. A total of 4 images of the bulbar conjunctiva were taken with blue light in order to quantify the CUVAF area.ResultsA total of 263 subjects (6 to 17 years old) were analyzed with no significant differences in demographic data between case group and control group. There were 50 non-myopic subjects (19%) and 213 myopic subjects (81%). In relation to the outdoor activities (OA), myopic subjects spent significantly fewer hours per week outdoors than the control-group (p = 0.03). About the CUVAF area, the differences between groups were statistically significant, showing that the myopic group has a significantly smaller CUVAF area than the control-group (0.33 ± 0.72 mm2 vs. 0.78 ± 1.22 mm2; p = 0.0023), likewise, the frequency of CUVAF area absence between both groups showed an odds ratio (OR) of 2.52 (CI95% 1.33–4.74). A Pearson correlation test was done, obtaining a strong significant inverse correlation between myopia degree-CUVAF area (r = 0.1877; IC95% 0.068–0.302), and also ratio (AL/CCR)-CUVAF area (p = 0.002 and p = 0.04) respectively.ConclusionCUVAF is a useful biomarker for OA and it has an inverse relationship with myopia degree also in pediatric age, especially after the age of 12, so it could be useful to differentiate the risk of developing myopia. Having a CUVAF area greater than that corresponding to age, protect to myopia 2.5 times, being almost 5 times the protection in case of high myopia.

Summary: Studies on sensory information processing typically focus on whisker-related tactile information, overlooking the question of how sensory inputs from other body areas are processed at cortical levels. Here, we present a protocol for stimulating specific rodent limb receptive fields while recording in vivo somatosensory-evoked activity. We describe steps for localizing cortical-hindlimb coordinates using acute peripheral stimulation, electrode placement, and the application of electrical stimulation. Millions of patients and their caretakers live and deal with the devastating consequences of spinal cord injury (SCI) worldwide. Despite outstanding advances in the field to both understand and tackle these pathologies, a cure for SCI patients, with their peculiar characteristics, is still a mirage. One of the most promising therapeutic strategies to date for these patients involves the use of epidural electrical stimulation. In this context, electrically active materials such as graphene and its derivates become particularly interesting. Indeed, solid evidence of their capacity to closely interact with neural cells and networks is growing. Encouraged by previous findings in our laboratory on the exploration of 3D porous reduced graphene oxide (rGO) scaffolds in chronic cervical hemisected rats (C6), herein we report their neuro-reparative properties when chronically implanted in complete transected rats (T9-T10), in which no preserved contralateral neural networks can assist in any observed recovery. Electrophysiological recordings from brainstem regions show antidromic activation of a small population of neurons in response to electrical stimulation caudal to the injury. These neurons are located in the Gigantocellular nucleus of reticular formation and vestibular nuclei, both regions directly related to motor functions. Together with histological features at the lesion site, such as more abundant and larger blood vessels and more abundant, longer and more homogeneously distributed axons, our results corroborate that rGO scaffolds create a permissive environment that allows the invasion of functional axonic processes from neurons located in brainstem nuclei with motor function in a rat model of complete thoracic transection. Additionally, behavioral tests evidence that these scaffolds play an important role in whole-body mechanical stabilization (postural control) proved by the absence of scoliosis, a higher trunk stability and a larger cervico-thoraco-lumbar movement range in rGO-implanted rats.

Abstract Pollution by metalloids, e.g., tellurite and selenite, is of serious environmental concern and, therefore, there is an increasing interest in searching for ecologically friendly solutions for their elimination. Some microorganisms are able to reduce toxic tellurite/selenite into less toxic elemental tellurium (Te) and selenium (Se). Here, we describe the use of the environmentally relevant β‐proteobacterium Aromatoleum sp. CIB as a platform for tellurite elimination. Aromatoleum sp. CIB was shown to tolerate 0.2 and 0.5 mM tellurite at aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the CIB strain was able to reduce tellurite into elemental Te producing rod‐shaped Te nanoparticles (TeNPs) of around 200 nm length. A search in the genome of Aromatoleum sp. CIB revealed the presence of a gene, AzCIB_0135, which encodes a new methyltransferase that methylates tellurite and also selenite. AzCIB_0135 orthologs are widely distributed in bacterial genomes. The overexpression of the AzCIB_0135 gene both in Escherichia coli and Aromatoleum sp. CIB speeds up tellurite and selenite removal, and it enhances the production of rod‐shaped TeNPs and spherical Se nanoparticles (SeNPs), respectively. Thus, the overexpression of a methylase becomes a new genetic strategy to optimize bacterial catalysts for tellurite/selenite bioremediation and for the programmed biosynthesis of metallic nanoparticles of biotechnological interest.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) encompasses various acquired or genetic diseases sharing a common phenotype. The understanding of pathogenetic mechanisms and the determination of the functional effects of each etiology may allow for tailoring different therapeutic strategies. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as key regulators in cardiovascular diseases, including DCM. However, their specific roles in different DCM etiologies remain elusive. Here, we applied mRNA-seq and miRNA-seq to identify the gene and miRNA signature from myocardial biopsies from four patients with DCM caused by volume overload (VCM) and four with ischemic DCM (ICM). Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis were used for differentially expressed genes (DEGs). The miRNA–mRNA interactions were identified by Pearson correlation analysis and miRNA target-prediction programs. mRNA-seq and miRNA-seq were validated by qRT-PCR and miRNA–mRNA interactions were validated by luciferase assays. We found 112 mRNAs and five miRNAs dysregulated in VCM vs. ICM. DEGs were positively enriched for pathways related to the extracellular matrix (ECM), mitochondrial respiration, cardiac muscle contraction, and fatty acid metabolism in VCM vs. ICM and negatively enriched for immune-response-related pathways, JAK-STAT, and NF-kappa B signaling. We identified four pairs of negatively correlated miRNA–mRNA: miR-218-5p-DDX6, miR-218-5p-TTC39C, miR-218-5p-SEMA4A, and miR-494-3p-SGMS2. Our study revealed novel miRNA–mRNA interaction networks and signaling pathways for VCM and ICM, providing novel insights into the development of these DCM etiologies.

El bienestar animal (BA) del ganado en régimen de manejo extensivo, ha sido muy poco estudiado y dentro del ganado bovino, la raza de lidia, es muy interesante en este aspecto por sus particularidades etológicas y su comportamiento agresivo. Se desarrolla un protocolo de valoración optimizado en base al proyecto Welfare Quality®, con el fin de integrar y evaluar el BA en las instalaciones, en el comportamiento de grupo, en los signos fisiológicos y en el manejo. Para ello se han evaluado 6 explotaciones distintas, 3 de ellas situadas en la región de Extremadura (España) y 3 en la región de Querétaro (México). Se escogieron 10 animales de cada subgrupo, formados en base al momento productivo y a los propios lotes de cada ganadería: vacas madres, sementales y lotes de animales de diferentes edades. Cada indicador de BA recogido en el protocolo se valoró en una escala de 1 a 5. La metodología de toma de datos desarrollada funcionó de forma adecuada. En general, las 6 ganaderías presentan una calificación óptima en todos los parámetros, si bien cabe destacar diferencias en cuanto a la distancia de aproximación, siendo menor en aquellas explotaciones en las que se manejan con mayor frecuencia a los animales, también reflejado en la curiosidad mostrada por los animales. Es importante destacar que el estudio refleja una alimentación adecuada, tanto a largo como a corto plazo (condición corporal y llenado ruminal) en las 6 ganaderías. En cuanto a la salud (respiración y mucosas, estado de pezuñas e índice de cojeras) se obtuvieron unos valores óptimos de BA. Se aprecia cierta diferencia entre las ganaderías de España y México en cuanto a la condición corporal de los animales, siendo sensiblemente menor en México, donde en invierno es la época seca, con menor cantidad de pasto.

Como fruto de la pandemia, nos hemos visto obligados a una precipitada virtualización de la enseñanza que ha supuesto un cambio radical sin previa valoración sobre la mejor manera de hacerlo. La investigación reciente pone de manifiesto, además, que a esta preocupación por adaptarse a la enseñanza online se ha sumado la carencia que los docentes perciben en su capacitación para evaluar al estudiantado (hombres y mujeres) con éxito en entornos de e-learning. Producto de esta situación y de los retos que derivan de ella, se lanza un curso online dirigido al profesorado universitario con un doble propósito. Por un lado, pretende ofrecer una formación rigurosa, completa y actualizada sobre evaluación educativa y, por otro, proporcionar estrategias y recursos para una evaluación eficaz y de calidad en Moodle. Los objetivos planteados en el presente trabajo son: a) Exponer el proceso de diseño y puesta en marcha de esta formación docente en modalidad online; y b) Evaluar la satisfacción de los participantes con el curso y con su proceso de aprendizaje, así como la percepción de utilidad para su labor educativa. Los resultados obtenidos y la gran acogida del curso indican que este tipo de formaciones son necesarias y provechosas para desarrollar la labor docente.

The canonical arsRBC genes of the ars1 operon in Pseudomonas putida KT2440, which confer tolerance to arsenate and arsenite, are followed by a series of additional ORFs culminating in phoN1. The phoN1 gene encodes an acetyltransferase that imparts resistance to the glutamine synthetase inhibitor herbicide phosphinothricin (PPT). The co‐expression of phoN1 and ars genes in response to environmental arsenic, along with the physiological effects, was analysed through transcriptomics of cells exposed to the oxyanion and phenotypic characterization of P. putida strains deficient in different components of the bifan motif governing arsenic resistance in this bacterium. Genetic separation of arsRBC and phoN1 revealed that their associated phenotypes operate independently, indicating that their natural co‐regulation is not functionally required for simultaneous response to the same signal. The data suggest a scenario of associative evolution, akin to Pavlovian conditioning, where two unrelated but frequently co‐occurring signals result in one regulating the other's response – even if there is no functional link between the signal and the response. Such surrogate regulatory events may provide an efficient solution to complex regulatory challenges and serve as a genetic patch to address transient gaps in evolving regulatory networks. La cornamenta del toro de lidia es la parte anatómica más delicada de este animal, dado que su carácter ofensivo y estresable hace que sufra lesiones traumáticas durante el año previo a la lidia. Actualmente, se protege el cuerno con una funda de fibra de vidrio, con el objetivo de proteger su integridad. Con este trabajo, se pretende estudiar la resistencia mecánica del cuerno del toro de lidia; se analiza la posible influencia del enfundado. Para ello, se ha recogido cuernos de 50 toros de lidia de 4 a 5 años; 25 de ellos habían sido enfundados 6 meses antes de su lidia. Se ha analizado la resistencia mecánica del cuerno: cepa, pala y pitón; se utiliza el equipamiento Instron Electropulse E10000, siguiendo una metodología similar a la empleada por Horcajada et al. (2009). Se realiza tres pruebas de resistencia mecánica: compresión directa, tracción indirecta y flexo-tracción. Todas reflejaron una alta resistencia del cuerno, sin diferencias entre sus partes. Se observa un efecto beneficioso del enfundado, favorece el espesor del estuche de queratina en la cepa del cuerno; el cual fue mayor en los cuernos de los animales enfundados. Además, se comprueba una mayor resistencia de los cuernos enfundados en la prueba de tracción indirecta. Por otra parte, los cuernos de mayor longitud y diámetro resistieron presiones más altas, absorbiendo el hueso cornal, mayoritariamente, la presión ejercida.

Abstract Pesticides residues can occur in ground and surface waters, and potentially react with chemicals used for water disinfection treatments, such as chlorine. This can lead to the formation of unknown reaction products, which can be more toxic and/or persistent than the active substances themselves, and therefore become a potential risk for human health and environment. Thus, in the framework of the EU Regulation 1107/2009, the identification of these by‐products and their potential risk should be assessed. Within the European Food Risk Assessment (EU‐FORA) Fellowship Programme, the fellow studied the behaviour of herbicides belonging to the families of imidazolinones and sulfonylureas in waters treated with chlorine disinfectants. Due to their physicochemical properties, these herbicides are susceptible of reaching natural waters. In fact, some of them have been detected in water monitoring programmes. During the experimental part of the present work programme, reactions between the active substances and the most used chlorine disinfecting reactants (hypochlorite and chloramines) were performed. Degradation kinetic parameters such as half‐lives and degradation constants were calculated. Results showed that herbicide degradation was both pH and chlorine/chloramines concentration dependent. In order to identify the degradation by‐products, high‐resolution mass spectrometry experiments were performed, and a possible route of formation of these compounds was proposed. Finally, their risk assessment was carried out by using tox/ecotoxicological properties determined by QSAR methodology and FOCUS modelling for hazard and exposure assessment, respectively. These results will contribute to the definition of a risk assessment scheme for pesticides by‐products potentially occurring in drinking water.

Diversos estudios relacionan la concentración plasmática de testosterona con un comportamiento agresivo del animal. En ellos se han estudiado diferentes especies animales, pero se desconoce cómo es esta relación en el toro de lidia, perteneciente a una raza bovina singular por su selección etológica hacia la agresividad. En este trabajo se analizó de forma objetiva el comportamiento en el ruedo de 302 machos adultos de la raza bovina de lidia. Se registraron 33 parámetros etológicos, el número y gravedad de las caídas experimentadas por el animal y el tiempo de las cuatro fases del espectáculo, para correlacionar dicha información con la concentración plasmática de testosterona. Los resultados mostraron diferencias en la media de concentración plasmática de testosterona entre ganaderías y entre las líneas genéticas de procedencia estudiadas en la muestra. Igualmente se constata una correlación positiva entre la concentración de testosterona y un grupo de ocho parámetros etológicos, que señalan ejercicio físico del animal; por otro lado se observó una correlación negativa con los parámetros etológicos: “sale suelto”, “querencia” y “tardea”, sinónimos de falta de casta, lo que podría indicar una correlación positiva entre la testosterona y la agresividad, como indica la bibliografía.

El estado de alarma derivado de la COVID-19 supuso para la mayoría de países un salto precipitado hacia la virtualización de sus enseñanzas, careciendo de tiempo suficiente para realizar una valoración más pausada del contexto y de la metodología que se debía emplear. Este hecho produjo lo que algunos autores han denominado «enseñanza remota de emergencia», enfatizando la diferencia entre la enseñanza online tradicional y la derivada del estado de alarma, que en muchos casos supuso una mera trasposición de las clases presenciales a un entorno virtual. Ello puso de manifiesto las carencias formativas que la mayoría de docentes (hombres y mujeres) tienen sobre la pedagogía de la evaluación a distancia, siendo precisamente esta uno de los aspectos que más ha preocupado a la comunidad educativa por considerarse, ya por sí misma, un reto complejo al que enfrentarse. Por esta razón, el presente trabajo pretende, en primer lugar, poner de manifiesto algunos de los retos que implica la evaluación educativa en los entornos online y las necesidades que en este sentido percibe el profesorado universitario, valorándolas además en un estudio exploratorio. Adicionalmente, dicho estudio pretende conocer su percepción acerca del proceso evaluativo en dicha etapa, analizar el conocimiento y uso que hace de la evaluación en Moodle y explorar su interés en ampliar su formación sobre dicha cuestión.

71 - Formación del profesorado universitario sobre la educación educativa

El libro que presentamos en este número de la revista se centra en las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC) y en el uso que hacemos de ellas hoy en día. La sociedad actual se caracteriza por la inmediatez, la innovación, la interactividad y la inmaterialidad que trae consigo la cuarta revolución industrial o la revolución digital. Esta era tecnológica incorpora a nuestra vida diaria las TIC y aspectos como la automatización inteligente o la hiperconectividad en todos los ámbitos, incluyendo el laboral y, en consecuencia, el educativo. Así, nos encontramos con que las competencias digitales se están convirtiendo en requisitos imprescindibles en los puestos de trabajo, transformando los que ya existían y generando otros nuevos, fruto de la digitalización de la sociedad. En las páginas de este manual se abordan las diferentes utilidades y aplicaciones de las TIC, las herramientas y técnicas asociadas, su correcto uso y el impacto y empleo de las mismas en la sociedad que nos está tocando vivir. En conclusión, en este texto cabe destacar la utilidad tanto de las TIC como de la gestión del conocimiento para los distintos ámbitos de la vida cotidiana. La obra ofrece una visión general sobre el recorrido y alcance del tema, pero aporta también definiciones claras sobre los distintos conceptos, facilitando además recomendaciones y herramientas para ponerlos en marcha.

Myelin, critical for the correct function of the nervous system, is organized in different patterns that can include long non-myelinated axonal segments. How myelin patterning is regulated remains unexplained. The carbohydrate-binding protein galectin-4 (Gal-4) influences oligodendrocyte differentiation in vitro and is associated with non-myelinable axon segments (NMS) in cultured neurons. In consequence, Gal-4 has been proposed as a myelin patterning regulator, although no in vivo studies have corroborated this hypothesis. We used Gal-4-deficient mice (Lgals4-KO) to study the role of Gal-4 in cortical myelination in vivo. We show that cultured neurons of Lgals4-KO mice form NMS that are regulated as in control neurons. In addition, oligodendrocyte/myelin markers expression measured by biochemical and immunochemical means, and cortical myelin microstructure studied by in-depth image analysis appear unaltered in these animals. Consistently, myelin displays an essentially normal function assessed by in vivo electrophysiology and locomotion analyses. In conclusion, cortical myelin of Lgals4-KO mice does not show any significant defect in composition, organization or function, pointing to a negligible role of Gal-4 in myelination in vivo or, as discussed, to unknown mechanisms that compensate its absence.

Gluten-free products (GFP) are a good choice for the replacement of cereals when following a gluten-free diet due to celiac disease (CD). However, commercial GFP are made with highly refined flours and may contain more fat, sugar, and salt, and less fiber and micronutrients than gluten-containing analogues, thus challenging the nutritional adequacy of the diet. The aim of this study is to assess the contribution of GFP to the diets of children and adolescents with CD. Food intakes were assessed in a cross-sectional study on 70 children and adolescents with CD (aged four to 18, 50% females), using three 24-h dietary records. GFP consumption reached 165 g a day and comprised mostly bread and fine bakery ware, followed by pasta. La cornamenta en el toro de lidia (TdL) es uno de los elementos anatómicos más importante del animal, ya que le confiere su carácter ofensivo y a la vez le dota de pureza e integridad. En la actualidad se protege el Cuerno (C) durante el último año de cría del toro con una funda de fibra de vidrio. Con el presente trabajo se pretendió estudiar la dureza del C del TdL analizando la posible influencia del enfundado en la misma. Para ello se han recogido los C de 390 toros (4-5 años -a-) y novillos (3 a) en plazas de toros de España y Francia, contando con un grupo control de individuos no enfundados de 60 animales. Se ha analizado la dureza de las 3 partes del C: cepa, pala y pitón, mediante la utilización de un durómetro PCE-D shore®. A su vez, se recogió información biométrica del C, se anotó la presencia de lesiones en la cornamenta y la capa del animal. Se observa que los C de los animales enfundados presentaron una menor dureza superficial, tanto a nivel de la cepa como del pitón. Los C que mostraron alguna alteración como escobillado o astillado entre otros, la dureza superficial del pitón fue menor. Y, por último, los C de los toros jaboneros resultaron ser más blandos, fundamentalmente a nivel del pitón, que los pertenecientes a animales con otras capas.

To study the influence of thiamethoxam exposure on colony strength and pathogen prevalence, an apiary (5 colonies) was placed in front of a plot sown with winter oilseed rape (wOSR), just before the flowering phase. Before sowing, the seeds were treated with an equivalent application of 18 g thiamethoxam/ha. For comparison, a second apiary (5 colonies) was located in front of a separate 750 m plot sown with untreated wOSR. Dead foragers at the entrance of hives were assessed every 2–3 days throughout the exposure period, while the colony strength (number of combs covered with adult honey bees and brood) and pathogens were monitored each month until the following spring. Foraging on the wOSR crop was confirmed by melissopalynology determination of the corbicular pollen collected periodically, while the chemical analysis showed that exposure to thiamethoxam was mainly through nectar. There was an increase in the accumulation of dead bees in the apiary exposed to thiamethoxam relating with the control, which was coped with an increment of bee brood surface and adult bee population. However, we did not find statistically significant differences between apiaries (α = 0.05) in terms of the evolution of pathogens. We discuss these results under hormesis perspective.

La osteocondrosis es un proceso degenerativo de las superficies articulares. Es una enfermedad descrita ampliamente en el caballo, con escasas referencias bibliográficas en bovino y prácticamente inexistentes en la raza de lidia. El objetivo de este trabajo fue informar sobre la prevalencia de osteocondrosis en toros y novillos, estudiar sus posibles causas y analizar la repercusión de esta patología en la movilidad del animal durante la lidia. Para ello se han estudiado 120 animales de la raza bovina de lidia, de 3, 4 y 5 años, lidiados en diferentes plazas de toros. Durante el faenado de las reses posterior a la lidia se realizó un estudio macroscópico de las articulaciones carpo-metacarpianas, estudiándose la presencia de lesión en las caras articulares implicadas y su grado de gravedad. Paralelamente se grabó la lidia de cada animal para el análisis de su movilidad y evaluación del síndrome de caída. Los resultados reflejan una lesión del cartílago articular en mayor o menor grado en aproximadamente el 80 % de los animales estudiados, apareciendo en el 63 % de los casos sobre la cara medial de la articulación y mayoritariamente de forma bilateral. Se observa una influencia negativa en la tasa de caídas manifestadas por el toro durante la lidia, lo que hace necesario nuevas investigaciones y estudios dirigidos a determinar sus posibles causas: factores genéticos, nutricionales y los inadecuados protocolos de entrenamiento entre otras.

Arsenic is a toxic element widely distributed in nature, but numerous bacteria are able to resist its toxicity mainly through the ars genes encoding an arsenate reductase and an arsenite efflux pump. Some “arsenotrophic” bacteria are also able to use arsenite as energy supplier during autotrophic growth by coupling anaerobic arsenite oxidation via the arx gene products to nitrate respiration or photosynthesis. Here, we have demonstrated that Azoarcus sp. CIB, a facultative anaerobic β-proteobacterium, is able to resist arsenic oxyanions both under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Genome mining, gene expression, and mutagenesis studies revealed the presence of a genomic island that harbors the ars and arx clusters involved in arsenic resistance in strain CIB. Orthologous ars clusters are widely distributed in the genomes of sequenced Azoarcus strains. Interestingly, genetic and metabolic approaches showed that the arx cluster of the CIB strain encodes an anaerobic arsenite oxidase also involved in the use of arsenite as energy source. Hence, Azoarcus sp. CIB represents the prototype of an obligate heterotrophic bacterium able to use arsenite as an extra-energy source for anaerobic cell growth. The arsenic island of strain CIB supports the notion that metabolic and energetic skills can be gained by genetic mobile elements.

In this case report, we analyze the possible causes of the poor health status of a professional Apis mellifera iberiensis apiary located in Gajanejos (Guadalajara, Spain). Several factors that potentially favor colony collapse were identified, including Nosema ceranae infection, alone or in combination with other factors (e.g., BQCV and DWV infection), and the accumulation of acaricides commonly used to control Varroa destructor in the beebread (coumaphos and tau-fluvalinate). Based on the levels of residues, the average toxic unit estimated for the apiary suggests a possible increase in vulnerability to infection by N. ceranae due to the presence of high levels of acaricides and the unusual climatic conditions of the year of the collapse event. These data highlight the importance of evaluating these factors in future monitoring programs, as well as the need to adopt adequate preventive measures as part of national and international welfare programs aimed at guaranteeing the health and fitness of bees.

We developed a new database to evaluate the nutritional composition of lactose-free products from Spain. The database includes dairy products and other products, all of which show the “lactose-free” declaration on their label, accounting for 327 products in total. Of these, 123 are dairy products, 16 are non-dairy products which include a dairy ingredient (5%) and 188 items (57% of the sample) are non-dairy products that do not contain any dairy ingredient. The main subgroups are yogurt (25%), milk (24%), and cheese (17%). Nineteen percent of the compiled products included nutritional claims on their labels. Most lactose-free products did not contain either added sugars or low- or no-calorie sweeteners (58%), while 34% included added sugars and only 6%, sweeteners or a combination of both (2%). We found that 19.5%, mainly within the milk subgroup, were fortified with vitamins A, D, E, K, B9, and B12, P, and Ca. There were no significant differences in the nutritional composition between lactose-free products and traditional products. According to the NOVA classification, 55% of compiled lactose-free products were ultra-processed, and 20% processed. The array of lactose-free products marketed in Spain proves that there are enough, both in quantity and quality, to satisfy the dairy needs of lactose intolerants.

Artificial insemination (AI) with cryopreserved semen is still unreliable for extensive pig industry application. Adding seminal plasma (SP) could improve post-thawing quality, but its suitability could vary. We applied a simple cold-shock test (CST, 5 min at 0 °C) on neat semen for classifying ejaculates (n = 63) as resistant or sensitive, obtaining two SP pools (CST-resistant: SPr, sensitive: SPs). Subsequently, frozen/thawed spermatozoa from six boars were incubated (37 °C) in MR-A® extender (control), 20% SPr, or 20% SPs, and analyzed at 0, 2, and 4 h. SP improved total and progressive motility, with a higher effect for SPr and STR (p < 0.05), decreasing kinematic parameters VCL and VAP, ALH, and BCF. Sperm viability was unaffected. SP increased apoptotic and membrane disorder ratios, and acrosomal damage, not affecting the chromatin structure (DNA fragmentation and immaturity by SCSA), protamination (CMA3), or disulfide levels (mBBr). However, the proportion of spermatozoa with elevated free thiols (disulfide bridges reduction) significantly increased. Results support a stimulatory role of SP on thawed semen, with additional benefits from SPr. The effect of SP and especially SPr after AI should be tested since CST could be a practical test for selecting suitable ejaculates in AI centers.

The present article responds to the need of the technical preparation of the teachers those that teach Elements of Economy and Labor Legislation (EELL) in the Centers of the Technical Education and Professional sphere (ETP) in Pinar del Río. The article revealed the theoretical considerations about the process of these professionals' improvement and the professional technique, the study and bibliography valuation related with the topic that can contribute to the design of a new performance strategy, starting from the existent tendencies in the national region.

The 50th Anniversary of Anales de Pediatría is a good time for the celebration of events and tributes, and also for critical thought.Anales de Pediatría is the official publication of scientific expression of the Spanish Association of Paediatrics (AEP). It has been published continuously since October 1968. The journal Anales has contributed so much to the narrative of the advances in Spanish paediatrics, as well as the AEP.Throughout its 50 years of history, the editorial teams of the journal have worked to streamline its management, improve the quality of the content, and to ensure its dissemination and national-international visibility.From 1968 to 1972, Anales was published as a Journal-bulletin.From 1977 until 2000, presence of original articles.Since the year 2000, continuous modernisation and recognition with international journals of prestige, indexing in SCI-JCR, impact from 2009, electronic management of manuscripts, Spanish/English from the 2014 Edition.The evolution of the journal is reviewed in this article. With this, the AEP history committee wants to collaborate in a greater understanding of the development of Spanish paediatrics, as well as to present the history of Anales to its authors and readers.The History committee proposes that a small percentage of space is destined for the humanities and to the humanisation of paediatrics. Best information will ensure the best care for children and also for paediatricians. During the past years the consumer’s awareness about the importance of welfare of animals used for food production is increasing. In this way, studies and systems to evaluate and monitor the quality of the welfare, mainly in intensive systems productions, have been developed and guidelines and protocols with parameters to be determined have been published. However, they all have various problems and there is no universally accepted methodology. Therefore, based on criteria and parameters based on the animal and on facilities and handling recommended on the aforementioned project and other variables considered important for dairy cows health and welfare by professors from the Departments of Animal Production and Medicine, Surgery and Veterinary Anatomy, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of León, a free software program (Happy Cow) has developed by students of the School of Industrial Engineering and Computer ULE that achieves two objectives: to be used as a teaching tool to develop students competencies and skills necessary for the evaluation of animal welfare using parameters based both on animals and facilities, and to improve the welfare of farm animals, identifying critical points and weakest, providing information and recommendations that could be used by each producer from assessments made on his farm.

Durante los últimos años la concienciación de los consumidores sobre la importancia del bienestar de los animales destinados a la producción de alimentos ha ido en creciente aumento. Así, se han desarrollado estudios y sistemas para evaluar y controlar la calidad del bienestar principalmente en las especies explotadas en sistemas intensivos y se han publicado protocolos con diversos parámetros a determinar. Sin embargo, todos ellos presentan problemas no existiendo una metodología universalmente aceptada. Por ello, partiendo de criterios y parámetros basados en el animal y en los alojamientos y manejo utilizados en protocolos existentes y en otros considerados importantes para la salud y el de bienestar de las vacas de leche por profesores de los Dpts. de Producción Animal y de Medicina, Cirugía y Anatomía Veterinaria de la Facultad de Veterinaria de León, se ha desarrollado un programa de software libre (Happy Cow) por parte de alumnos de la Escuela de Ingenierías Industrial e Informática de la ULE, que permite alcanzar un doble objetivo, ser una herramienta docente para que los alumnos desarrollen competencias y habilidades necesarias para la evaluación del bienestar animal usando parámetros basados en los animales y en las instalaciones, y mejorar el bienestar de los animales en la granja, detectando los puntos críticos y aspectos más deficientes, proporcionando información y recomendaciones a cada productor a partir de las evaluaciones realizadas en su granja.
