2. Effects of a Homework Implementation Method (MITCA) on Self-Regulation of Learning

Abstract

The MITCA method (Homework Implementation Method) was developed with the purpose of turning homework into an educational resource capable of improving students' self-regulated learning and school engagement. In this paper, following current theoretical frameworks, we evaluate the effect of the MITCA method on students' self-regulated learning. In general, MITCA includes the assignment of diverse, concrete and valued by the students tasks which are completed on a weekly basis. We analyze the differences in self-regulation strategies in a sample of 533 fifth (n = 270) and sixth graders (n = 262) with an age range of 10-12 years old (47.5% boys and 52.5% girls), who were about equally distributed to an experimental and a control group. Trained teachers used MITCA to prescribe homework in the experimental group for twelve weeks. The students of the experimental group reported significantly higher time management and environmental management. However, there were no significant differences observed in other aspects of self-regulation, and the experimental group did not perceive a deficit in these areas. Our results indicate the effectiveness of MITCA on students' self-regulation of learning and discussed in light of current theories and evidence in the field.

3. Using Self-Reflection to Support Teacher Professional Learning and Development of Their Digital Competence: A Multi-Case Study Using SELFIEforTEACHERS

Abstract

This report presents a multi-case qualitative research study on how to support teacher professional learning and development of their digital competence, through a self-reflection process using SELFIEforTEACHERS (SfT). The study investigated how SfT can be used in different settings and what factors, enablers and barriers affect its effective implementation. Moreover, it investigated how self-reflection using SfT can support teachers' agency and efficacy for their professional development in using digital technologies in teaching and learning. The report presents the theoretical assumptions that guided the research and discusses the main pertinent findings across the cases, based on the evidence amassed for the individual case studies. Findings are reported from 13 individual case studies conducted in six European Union Member States and are based on thematic analyses using an explanatory case study approach. Main findings indicate that SfT embedded in professional development activities can support teachers in developing digital competence, while at the same time collected aggregated data can support professional development planning. The report concludes with recommendations for teachers, school leaders, teacher trainers and educators, and policymakers.

5. Cognitive and personality predictors of school performance from preschool to secondary school: An overarching model

Abstract

In this article, existing research investigating how school performance relates to cognitive, selfawareness, language, and personality processes is reviewed. We outline the architecture of the mind, involving a general factor, g, that underlies distinct mental processes (i.e., executive, reasoning, language, cognizance, and personality processes). From preschool to adolescence, g shifts from executive to reasoning and cognizance processes; personality also changes, consolidating in adolescence. There are three major trends in the existing literature: (a) All processes are highly predictive of school achievement if measured alone, each accounting for ∼20% of its variance; (b) when measured together, cognitive processes (executive functions and representational awareness in preschool and fluid intelligence after late primary school) dominate as predictors (over ∼50%), drastically absorbing self-concepts and personality dispositions that drop to ∼3%–5%; and (c) predictive power changes according to the processes forming g at successive levels: attention control and representational awareness in preschool (∼85%); fluid intelligence, language, and working memory in primary school (∼53%); fluid intelligence, language, self-evaluation, and school-specific self-concepts in secondary school (∼70%). Stability and plasticity of personality emerge as predictors in secondary school. A theory of educational priorities is proposed, arguing that (a) executive and awareness processes; (b) information management; and (c) reasoning, self-evaluation, and flexibility in knowledge building must dominate in preschool, primary, and secondary school, respectively. acceptedVersion

7. Effects of face and name presentation on memory for associated verbal descriptors

Abstract

Sixty-four participants were tested on immediate and delayed recall of verbal information about people accompanied by photographs of them, in comparison to verbal information about people accompanied by written names of them. Forty-two descriptive sentences were shown in a fixed random order, each associated with a photograph of one of 6 people (7 facts per depicted person), and another 42 sentences were paired with the written name of one of 6 people (7 facts per named person). Participants had to recall as many facts about each face or name as they could, 5 min after the presentation and then a week later. More information was recalled when paired with a photographic image than when paired with a name, especially in the delayed recall condition. Facts referring to a certain face or name were not attributed to a different face or name. Females excelled males on both short- and long-term retention of information. Face-related performance improved significantly when participants became aware of the precise design and memory demands of the task, but name-related performance did not improve.

Στόχος της έρευνας ήταν η μελέτη προστατευτικών προβλεπτικών παραγόντων και παραγόντων κινδύνου της πρόθεσης εγκατάλειψης μεταπτυχιακών σπουδών. Η έρευνα βασίστηκε στη Θεωρία του Αυτο-Προσδιορισμού. Συνολικά συμμετείχαν 288 μεταπτυχιακοί/ές φοιτητές/ριες. Οι συμμετέχοντες/ουσες κλήθηκαν να απαντήσουν ηλεκτρονικά σε ένα ερωτηματολόγιο που αποτελούνταν από κλίμακες αυτο-αναφοράς, οι οποίες αξιολογούσαν την αντιληπτή υποστήριξη και ματαίωση των αναγκών από τους/τις καθηγητές/ριες, την οικογένεια και τους/τις συμφοιτητές/ριες τους, την αντιληπτή επάρκεια και αυτονομία, το αυτόνομο και ελεγχόμενο κίνητρο και την πρόθεση εγκατάλειψης των σπουδών. Για τη στατιστική ανάλυση εφαρμόστηκε ανάλυση διαδρομών. Ελέγχθηκαν δύο μοντέλα. Στο πρώτο, τις εξωγενείς μεταβλητές αποτελούσαν οι μεταβλητές της ικανοποίησης των αναγκών από φορείς του πλαισίου, ενώ στο δεύτερο η ματαίωση των αναγκών από τους ίδιους φορείς. Διαμεσολαβούσες μεταβλητές και στα δύο μοντέλα ήταν η επάρκεια, η αυτονομία και το αυτόνομο/ελεγχόμενο κίνητρο, ενώ εξαρτημένη μεταβλητή η πρόθεση εγκατάλειψης σπουδών. Στο πρώτο μοντέλο σημαντικοί προγνωστικοί παράγοντες αναδείχτηκαν η υποστήριξη των αναγκών από τους/τις καθηγητές/ριες, η επάρκεια και η αυτονομία, ενώ στο δεύτερο η ματαίωση των αναγκών από τους/τις καθηγητές/ριες και τους/τις συμφοιτητές/ριες, η επάρκεια, η αυτονομία και το αυτόνομο κίνητρο για τις σπουδές.
