Teaching physical sciences in English as the Language of Learning and Teaching (LOLT) has presented numerous challenges, particularly for learners who are not proficient in the language. The South African government is increasingly considering the use of indigenous languages as the medium of instruction for subjects such as physical sciences, sparking debates regarding the effectiveness of indigenous languages in teaching and learning. This study aimed to explore stakeholders' perceptions regarding the use of Tshivenda scientific language for the concept of electricity. Utilizing qualitative interpretative case study methodology, the researcher conducted interviews with two grade 10 teachers, three parents, and two groups of grade 10 learners from selected schools to investigate their views on using Tshivenda scientific language register to teach physical sciences. The findings indicate that stakeholders view the adoption of scientific language registers in Tshivenda as a positive initiative. They believe it will provide learners who struggle to understand physical sciences when taught in English with an opportunity to learn effectively in a language they are familiar with. Therefore, the study recommends expanding the development of scientific registers in Tshiven?a to cover other topics in physical sciences.

Students believed physics was one of the most challenging sciences in education, and their interest in learning physics was lacking. Therefore, this study aims to enhance students' understanding and creativity in the STEAM learning system on electricity by creating a project (Paper Circuit) using the students' creativity at the junior high school level - quantitative research with a pre-experimental design used for this study. The population is 8th grade and 9th grade (50 students adapted to the curriculum used in the school) in one of the Junior Secondary Schools located in Bandung and Cimahi, Indonesia. The data is obtained from the pretest-posttest results, which show that the average pre-test score was 57.04 and the post-test score was 76.64. The nonparametric test was tested using the Wilcoxon test to measure student understanding. The results from e Wilcoxon are 0.000, which shows sig. <0.05, which means there is a significant difference between pre-test and post-test. Students' creativity is obtained from the Creativity Product Analysis Matrix (CPAM), and the result for Project 1 is 73.71%, categorized as enough, and Project 2 is 83.13%, categorized as good. Based on the result, Paper Circuit STEAM project-based learning can enhance student understanding and creativity. STEAM project-based learning can be used as an alternative teaching strategy in junior secondary school.

This research aims to develop ECARsites, an online site designed to support data-related activities in science learning and to facilitate the implementation of data, computational thinking (CT), and self-directed learning (SRL) practices in a more contextualized and relevant way for students. The approach used design-based research (DBR) methods, focusing on developing high-quality learning products or systems that meet user needs. The study was conducted at MA X in Magetan, Indonesia, involving four middle school science teachers and eighteen middle school students. The research findings showed that DBR can be an effective method of professional development for science teachers, focusing on developing relevant and contextual innovations for students. Integrating data practices, CT, and SRL frameworks into the DBR process facilitated the development of students' scientific thinking skills, leading to a more immersive and appropriate science education for today's digital age. The study highlights the importance of using real data in teaching, involving students in data processing, and supporting teachers in designing and implementing data-driven learning. The study also emphasizes the importance of effective professional development in computational thinking and self-directed learning and the need for investment in long-term professional development programs to prepare teachers for an increasingly technology-dependent world of education.

Universities have a wealth of new digital tools and methodologies at their disposal for educational processes. It is difficult to know which of the many options to use, but it makes sense to combine methodologies to increase student satisfaction and, above all, to reduce drop-out rates. The study used a questionnaire survey in a mass course to see how satisfied students are with the technical services of Moodle, the quality of teaching, and its usability. The students' learning habits and what content they use on the Moodle LMS (MLMS) platform of our own institution in Hungary is also examined. The use of MLMS as an educational tool, not only in distance learning but also in full-time education, is significant at our university, and its strengths have been successfully translated into benefits for students. The results confirmed our preliminary assumptions. The analysis suggests that the MLMS was a good choice as course outcomes improved, drop-out rates decreased, and student satisfaction increased.

This study aimed to examine the efficacy of school-based e-cigarette preventive interventions via a systematic review and meta-analysis. We searched Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus, CINAHL, Cochrane, and clinical trial registries for studies published between January 2000 and June 2023 using keywords for e-cigarettes, adolescents, and school. Of 1566 double-screened records, 11 met the criteria of targeting adolescents, evaluating an e-cigarette preventive intervention, being conducted in a secondary school, using a randomized controlled trial (RCT), cluster RCT, or quasi-experimental design, and comparing an intervention to a control. Pre-specified data pertaining to the study design, outcomes, and quality were extracted by one reviewer and confirmed by a second, and where necessary, a third reviewer. Meta-analyses found no evidence that school-based interventions prevented e-cigarette use at the longest follow-up, which ranged between 6 and 36 months post-intervention (OR = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.16, 1.12; p = 0.09). However, subgroup analyses identified significant effects at post-test and when studies with < 12-month follow-up were omitted. No effect was found for tobacco use at the longest follow-up (OR = 1.01, 95% CI = 0.65, 1.59, p = 0.95); however, reductions in past 30-day tobacco use (OR = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.39, 0.89, p = 0.01) which encompassed e-cigarettes in some studies were identified. Narrative synthesis supported these mixed results and found some school-based interventions prevented or reduced e-cigarette and/or tobacco use; however, some increased use. School-based interventions were also associated with improved knowledge (SMD = - 0.38, 95% CI = - 0.68, - 0.08, p = 0.01), intentions (SMD = - 0.15, 95% CI = - 0.22, - 0.07, p = 0.0001), and attitudes (SMD = - 0.14, 95% CI = - 0.22, - 0.06; p = 0.0007) in the short term. Overall, the quality of evidence was low-to-moderate. School-based interventions hold the potential for addressing e-cigarette use, however, can have null or iatrogenic effects. More high-quality research is needed to develop efficacious interventions, and schools must be supported to adopt evidence-based programs. This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the efficacy of school-based preventive interventions for e-cigarette use. It provides crucial new knowledge about the efficacy of such interventions in preventing e-cigarette use and improving other outcomes (e.g., tobacco use, knowledge, intentions, attitudes, and mental health) among adolescents and the key characteristics associated with efficacious interventions. Our findings have important practical implications, highlighting future research directions for the development and evaluation of e-cigarette preventive interventions, along with the need to provide support to schools to help them identify and adopt evidence-based programs.

Objectives: More than 2.5 million middle and high school students in the United States reported current use of e-cigarettes in 2022. With continued curiosity and initiation of e-cigarette use among youth, it is critical to explore new and innovative ways to communicate about the dangers of e-cigarettes. The purpose of this study was to determine youth never-user and ever-user interpretations of a novel, educational comic book, 'The Villainous Vape'. Method: A 43-question survey was distributed to a convenience sample of middle and high school students across Kentucky. Results: Of the 76 respondents, 85.5% (n = 65) reported having never using e-cigarettes and 14.5% (n = 11) reported having tried e-cigarettes at least once in their lifetime. Never-users were more likely to say that the comic book would be an effective method of e-cigarette education for their peers, compared with ever-users. In addition, never-users were more likely to report that the comic book deterred them from using e-cigarettes. Conclusion: Further research is needed to determine how perceptions of story-based education through novel comics affect young people's health decisions regarding e-cigarette use.

Contribution: The evaluation of analog-to-digital conversion methods constitutes a key component of an Instrumentation course. This study introduces an affordable educational platform based on Arduino UNO board designed for teaching analog-to-digital conversion concepts, supported by virtual instruments (VIs). Background: ADCs are electronic devices found in a wide range of consumer electronics, such as smartphones and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. In order to investigate the fundamental aspects of ADCs, a data acquisition system is required. However, high-quality ADC systems tend to be expensive. Alternatively, cost-effective microcontrollers can serve as an educational platform for conducting experimental procedures, including tests, characterization, and calibration. Intended Outcomes: The proposed experiment concentrates on elucidating the theoretical foundations of analog-to-digital conversion, along with providing in-depth insights into the technical details involved in characterizing and calibrating ADCs. Application Design: Four VIs have been developed and are employed to investigate concepts, such as resolution, nonlinearity, aliasing, and to determine offset and gain errors. Findings: The learning experience and the usability of the system were assessed through questionnaires distributed to a total of 105 students. In addition, the final exam was used to assess the performance of 29 students. The results indicate that the students significantly improved their ability to understand, apply, and analyze essential aspects of ADC after engaging in the experiments, demonstrating substantial learning gains.

Contribution: This study provides an implementation of a partially flipped classroom with gamification aspects that has shown a statistically significant increase in student performance relative to traditional lecture. Background: Electronic Circuits is a challenging required course for first-year students in the Electrical Engineering degree program at National Taiwan University. Students taking the English section have historically performed lower than other Chinese sections, likely due to their diverse backgrounds and less familiarity with Taiwanese-style exams. Intended Outcome: This study applied flipped-learning-with-gamification teaching methods to evaluate their effectiveness in improving students' motivation to solve ungraded practice problems and increase student performance. One-third of the class was a condensed in-class lecture with supplemental online videos, while two-thirds was a problem-solving session with students in teams. A class gameboard (leaderboard) and weekly concept cards (badges) were used to motivate the students to complete weekly ungraded practice problems. Findings: The results showed that the flipped-learning-with-gamification approach increased the average of the English section's normalized quiz and exam grades by 11.6% compared to the previous year, such that the section's average performance matched that of the other sections (control groups). Results also found that higher grades were most strongly correlated with higher completion rates of in-class problems and were uncorrelated with lecture attendance. Survey results showed that students liked the gamification aspects of working in teams, receiving concept cards, and completing challenge problems more than the course gameboard.

Contribution: This study uses a qualitative research method to analyze interviews where participants simplified an electric circuit while explaining their thought process. Background: Rearranging circuit diagrams is a fundamental skill in electrical and electronic engineering, yet students can struggle with unfamiliar configurations. Current research in the discipline is often quantitative, centered on conceptual understanding. By using a qualitative method, the process of "How" students interact with circuit diagrams is investigated. Research Question: How do students approach circuit diagram simplifications? Methodology: 15-min individual discussions with ten participants (undergraduate years 1-4) simplifying an unconventionally presented circuit diagram were recorded. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to identify common themes. Findings: (1) Participants initially rely upon pattern recognition to solve circuit problems before applying other analysis techniques; (2) two rearrangement methods were identified: "component focused," where combinations of components are grouped and then connected together, and "ground focused" where components in the circuit are related to ground and then connected together; (3) students using a ground focused strategy were less hesitant in their circuit rearrangement process; and (4) students broadly used mechanicalistic methods of error checking, selecting software tools rather than applying conceptual understanding.

Infants are immersed in a world of sounds from the moment their auditory system becomes functional, and experience with the auditory world shapes how their brain processes sounds in their environment. Across cultures, speech and music are two dominant auditory signals in infants' daily lives. Decades of research have repeatedly shown that both quantity and quality of speech input play critical roles in infant language development. Less is known about the music input infants receive in their environment. This study is the first to compare music input to speech input across infancy by analyzing a longitudinal dataset of daylong audio recordings collected in English-learning infants' home environments, at 6, 10, 14, 18, and 24 months of age. Using a crowdsourcing approach, 643 naïve listeners annotated 12,000 short snippets (10 s) randomly sampled from the recordings using Zooniverse, an online citizen-science platform. Results show that infants overall receive significantly more speech input than music input and the gap widens as the infants get older. At every age point, infants were exposed to more music from an electronic device than an in-person source; this pattern was reversed for speech. The percentage of input intended for infants remained the same over time for music while that percentage significantly increased for speech. We propose possible explanations for the limited music input compared to speech input observed in the present (North American) dataset and discuss future directions. We also discuss the opportunities and caveats in using a crowdsourcing approach to analyze large audio datasets. A video abstract of this article can be viewed at https://youtu.be/lFj_sEaBMN4

This study employed a non-equivalent quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control-group design to study the effect of the PhET simulation intervention on students' engagement, satisfaction, and academic achievement in the learning of direct current electric circuit concepts among Bhutanese students. We analysed the pre- and post-test scores and perceptions of 57 ninth-grade students, divided into experimental group (EG, n = 29) and control group (CG, n = 28), from one high school in Paro District, Bhutan. The EG students were taught with the PhET simulation intervention, while the CG students were taught with the traditional chalk-talk method. The pre- and post-test scores were collected with the Electric Circuits Conceptual Evaluation (ECEE) inventory. Mean, standard deviation, a two-sample t-test, and multiple linear regression (MLR) were computed using R and RStudio. The t-test revealed a statistically significant difference in the mean post-test scores of CG and EG students. MLR analysis further confirmed that this difference was due to the PhET simulation intervention, ruling out the influence of other confounding variables. Additionally, an instrument called the PhET Engagement-Satisfaction Questionnaire was developed to assess EG students' engagement level and satisfaction with the PhET simulation intervention. Confirmatory factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha calculation confirmed its validity and reliability. Data from the PhET Engagement-Satisfaction Questionnaire unveiled significant impact of the PhET simulation intervention on students' engagement level and their overall satisfaction, reinforcing prior research. However, further research with a larger sample size, incorporating lesson observations, interviews, and our measurement tool, is necessary to ascertain whether the findings it yields align with the present study's findings.

Recently, multiple health organizations and advocacy groups have pushed for giving an R-rating for movies depicting tobacco imagery. This study examined several predictors of U.S. adults' opinion toward an R-rating policy for movies depicting cigarette smoking. We used data from the Health Information National Trends Survey (2020 cycle), for a nationally representative sample of 3,865 US adults (aged = 18). The outcome variable was opinion toward an R-rating policy (support, neutral, and oppose) for movies depicting cigarette smoking. A weighted adjusted multinomial logistic regression analysis with comparisons of support versus oppose, support versus neutral, and neutral versus oppose was performed. About 48.2% of respondents were supportive of, 31.1% were neutral toward, and 20.7% were opposed to an R-rating policy. Adults aged 50 to 64 years (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.28, p = 0.008) and =65 years (aOR = 4.54, p <0.001) (vs. 18-34 years) were more likely to support the R-rating policy than oppose it. Non-Hispanic Black respondents (vs. non-Hispanic Whites) were 1.74 times more likely to support than oppose the policy (aOR = 1.74, p = 0.04), whereas adults with a household annual income of US$75,000 or more (vs. <$20,000) and those with moderate (vs. liberal) political viewpoints were more likely to be neutral than oppose the policy. Former and current e-cigarette users (vs. never users) were less likely to support than oppose the policy. Tailored messaging addressing the rationale behind R-rating policy should be directed towards communities based on age, race/ethnicity, household income, e-cigarette usage, and political ideologies.

Online reading has become an essential part of our life. Online reading has emerged as an active interdisciplinary field of scientific study in the past two decades. In order to develop a global view of the area, we conducted a bibliometric study on 7486 articles retrieved from WoS and Scopus databases published from 2004 to 2023. We analyzed the development trends in publications and citations, revealed the current major research themes, identified future research topics and most productive authors, affiliations, journals and countries. First, the publications and citations have been growing constantly in the past 20 years. Second, internet, e-book and comprehension have been the most frequently discussed topics. Third, three major themes have been revealed. The first theme emphasized the unique feature of online reading, which included the sub-themes of text features of hypertext, utilization of e-books, online health resources, and social interaction on line. The second theme had to do with education and learning. The third theme was related to health literacy. Fourth, education and medicine would attract researchers' attention in future research. Finally, the USA leads the total publications in the area of online reading. Our study contributed to the theory building by providing a detailed understanding of online reading research from an international perspective. We used two databases, WoS and Scopus, and improved the development of search terms, data filtering and data analysis. Implications for researchers, scientists and educators were discussed.

This study aimed to examine the integration of four elementary science teachers' technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) components during emergency remote teaching. Data sources included teaching video recordings and stimulated interviews conducted after analyzing the teachers' teaching videos. The data were analyzed by identifying the practical TPACK (TPACK-p) segments and by adopting the enumerative and constant-comparative approaches. Major findings of the analysis were (i) the integrations seen in the teachers' maps become richer and more diverse as their TPACK-p proficiency increases; (ii) the learner and assessment components are the most prominent components when the teachers can integrate learners into the lesson; and (iii) the instructional management and curriculum-design components have limited integrations with other TPACK-p components. The results are discussed in light of related literature and implications are provided for science teacher education. Remote science teaching courses should be incorporated into preservice teacher education programs. Likewise, professional development programs should train in-service teacher for distance science teaching.

Background: In this paper, we explore the role digital health education can play in physical education. We argue that the use of digital media and technologies has been accompanied by fundamental changes in basic sports pedagogical categories such as body, movement and experience. In doing so, we advance the thesis that increasing digitalisation offers multi-layered and partly paradoxical opportunities and risks for health education, which have not yet been sufficiently discussed from a sports pedagogical perspective in a digitalised world. Objective: To develop a deeper understanding of these changes, we aim to analyse the mechanisms, opportunities and challenges created by digital health education in physical education, with a focus on the use of tools such as wearables. Method: We draw on a Bildung-oriented perspective rooted in German-speaking pedagogy. With this in mind, we first look at the possibilities and limits for digital health education in physical education at the surface level, before we offer a deeper investigation of body, movement and experience in a digitalised world. This leads us to critical reflection at a structural level. Results and Conclusion: Supposedly clear distinctions between 'virtual' and 'real', and 'digital' and 'analogue', are increasingly untenable. On the one hand, the use of digital technologies can convey reductionist images of humankind and a narrow understanding of education. On the other hand, students can experience differences between supposedly objective and subjective views of their bodies and their movement behaviour using digital technologies. This can lead to Bildung processes in which the relationship between oneself and the world is questioned, which in a sense constitutes a form of Bildung-oriented digital health education.

The research purpose is to investigate the ways of using new technologies in music education and help scholars analyse the motifs of national music culture and folklore in modern "electronic music." The research uses the oscillation coefficient to identify the key features of electronic music, combined with folk music, the rich melisma and the method of changing the speed of sound. The combination of different sound processing tools and the additional noise is typical for national music. The scholars developed and introduced learning approaches to ensure electronic music making, providing editorial approaches to working on musical compositions and learning the specifics of intonation techniques for compositions. Moreover, the research proposes ways to develop technical skills to create melodies and skills of harmonic instrumentation of music. The utilization of contemporary technologies such as NCH TwelveKeys, Ardour, NanoStudio, and n-Track Studio has facilitated the incorporation of learning mechanisms into the process. Such an approach to teaching influences the creation of high-quality musical compositions "from scratch" (1.98) and "improvised compositions" (1.82). The compositions focus on the combination of electronic music with national and folk music elements. The practical research significance is the possibility of improving skills in electronic music making, combining different musical genres and using the possibilities of modern technologies. The research prospects entail the analysis of the quality in the creation of electronic and popular compositions, alongside the exploration of the amalgamation of diverse components from national and folk music traditions.

Retrospective alcohol use data are prone to recall bias, a limitation that could be addressed with real-time ecological momentary assessment (EMA) tools. We aimed to (1) introduce a simple (single-click) EMA methodology for collecting real-time alcohol use data, and (2) investigate the EMA methodology's performance relative to established alcohol use data collection tools. In March-April 2021, we sampled undergraduate students (n = 84) and collected a week of alcohol use data. Participants entered their real-time drinking start times using our EMA methodology, self-reported their drinking details in daily surveys, and a subsample recorded their breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) using smart breathalyzers. We estimated the accuracy of our EMA methodology in collecting alcohol use data relative to data collected by daily surveys and breathalyzers. Overall, 199 drinking events were recorded with the EMA methodology. Numbers of drinks recorded with the EMA methodology were correlated with self-reported daily surveys (r = 0.82, p < 0.001) and BrAC readings (r = 0.69, p < 0.001). Sensitivity and specificity of the EMA methodology in detecting heavy drinking relative to daily surveys were 82% (95% CI [67%, 92%]) and 97% (95% CI [85%, 100%]), respectively. These were 74% (95% CI: [64%, 83%]) and 92% (95% CI: [85%, 96%]) for binge drinking. Similar results were found when we used breathalyzers as the reference standard test. We developed an EMA methodology for collecting real-time alcohol use data (alcohol drinking start-time, frequency, magnitude, patterns, and pace). Our findings support the utility of our EMA methodology in collecting alcohol use data among college students.

This study has two purposes: To clarify how industrial design relates to electronics knowledge and to determine whether industrial design education is sufficient for teaching it. As digital product design is frequently focused on the design of virtual interfaces until recently, less attention was paid to the design of physical interactions and electronic interfaces. There is increasing interest in electronics education in industrial design, yet electronics is still a bottleneck for many industrial designers. What electronics knowledge industrial designers should have and whether they know it is debatable. Therefore, the study presents a literature review and thematically analyzed interviews to determine its scope. Then, a survey is planned based on the concepts which interviewees remark on. The survey aims to determine whether senior-grade and fresh-graduate industrial designers use correct reasoning in design cases based on electronics. Findings remark that two-thirds of the participants failed in the critical electronics domains and their reasoning scores are distributed equally depending on whether they took electronics courses. Therefore, it is discussed that there is a need for developing a common understanding of the role of electronics in design education. And it is recommended that the approach may focus more on a hands-on terminology education.

Electricity is a very important concept in learning Physics. Mastering this concept can make learning Physics meaningful and relatable to real life problems. However, literature indicates that students have poor conceptual understanding of concepts about electricity. The current research aims to improve Form 5 (aged 17 years) students' understanding of direct current circuits by using Concept Cartoons Worksheets. Concept Cartoons are A single-group pre-test/post-test investigation was carried out using seven Concept Cartoons Worksheets designed to address common conceptual misconceptions about direct current circuits with a total of 30 physics student participants. The seven Concept Cartoons were modified based on the Concept Inventory Test "Determining and Interpreting Resistive Electric Circuit Concepts Test (DIRECT). Concept Cartoons Worksheets were used to correct students' misconceptions about direct current circuits and to increase their level of conceptual understanding. The data collected were analysed quantitatively to obtain percentages, means, and t-test values. The descriptive statistics showed an increase in the level of student's conceptual understanding after the use of Concept Cartoons. The t-test analysis reported that the difference was significant. The results show that Malaysian students do have misconceptions about electricity concepts. However, Concept Cartoons Worksheets are effective to overcome students' misconceptions about electrical concepts, specifically toward current circuits. Concept Cartoons are not only effective in overcoming misconceptions among students, they are also refreshing and unique because of the cartoons presented while relating to Physics concepts that are abstract.

Encouraging student engagement is a key aim in any educational setting, and allowing students the freedom to pursue their own methods of solving problems through independent experimentation has been shown to markedly improve this. In many contexts, however, allowing students this flexibility in their learning is hampered by constraints of the material itself, such as in the electronics laboratory, where expensive and bulky equipment confines the learning environment to the laboratory room. Finding ourselves in the position of teaching one such laboratory course at the undergraduate level, we sought to encourage students to learn through independent investigation and the pursuit of personal projects, by providing a more flexible and inquiry-based learning environment and allowing them to take their measurement equipment--and their learning--beyond the laboratory itself. We present this project as a case of design both for and by students, with the lead designer undertaking the project after attending the course in question, and pursuing its development as a foundational step in their graduate career. We discuss the challenges and opportunities we encountered over the course of the design and development process, and the eventual key output of the project: a portable, low-cost, integrated electronics experimentation platform called the WinterLab board.

Virtual microscopes are computer or web-based programs that enable users to visualize digital slides and mimic the experience of using a real light microscope. Traditional light microscopes have always been an essential teaching tool in health science education to observe and learn cell and tissue structures. However, studies comparing virtual and real light microscopes in education reported learners' satisfaction with virtual microscopes regarding their usability, image quality, efficiency, and availability. Although the use of virtual or web-based microscopy is increasing, there is no equivalent decrease in the number of schools utilizing traditional microscopes. We conducted a scoping review to investigate the comparative impact of conventional and virtual microscopes on different aspects of learning. We report a relative effect of virtual and light microscopy on student performance, long-term knowledge retention, and satisfaction. Our results show that virtual microscopy is superior to traditional microscopes as a teaching tool in health science education. Further studies are needed on different learning components to guide the best use of virtual microscopy as a sole teaching tool for health care education.

This study analyzed data from a survey distributed to teachers in an urban school district in New Jersey. The survey asked teachers about their past and current perceptions of, and practices with, the use of classroom technology and in particular one-to-one devices. Findings reveal teachers generally perceive technology as positive in teaching and learning, but also noted some limitations. The biggest takeaway from this study is that teachers believe they can improve both their technology skills and their methods of technology integration into instruction, provided they are given the necessary time to learn, use, and practice with technology and one-to-one devices.

This research is part of the integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the Moroccan education system, our objective being to evaluate the use of computer-assisted experimentation (CAEx) in learning to encourage the authorities of the Ministry of National Education, Vocational Training and Sports to adopt the CAEx program in the teaching and learning of physics so that it becomes compulsory for all high schools. To evaluate the impact of using CAEx in the study of free oscillations of an RLC circuit (a linear circuit containing an electrical resistor, an inductor, and a capacitor). A study was conducted with 40 Moroccan students in the second year of the scientific baccalaureate option life and earth sciences at the high school Abdellah Laroui in the city of Fez, as this work aims to highlight the effect of the use of CAEx on the learning of students. Using the methodology of pre-test and post-test with an experimental group (20 students) and a control group (20 students). The results of both groups are analyzed with IBM SPSS 21 statistical analysis software the results obtained from the post-test show that the average of the tests addressed to both control and experimental groups has a significant difference. In addition, non-directive and directive interviews were conducted with the students of the experimental group. Indeed, the content of the grid of open and closed questions was elaborated in agreement with the teachers of physical sciences of the high school Abdellah Laroui, concerning the use of CAEx in learning and to know the degree of satisfaction of the integration of CAEx in the study of free oscillations in an RLC circuit. In addition, the data were processed by Sphinx v5 software. This study showed that CAEx integration had a positive effect on student learning. It can be said that CAEx plays an important role in the grasp and assimilation of scientific concepts, and it represents a solution to make the student more attentive and serious. Computer Aided Instruction can develop a spirit of initiative in the learner.

The aim of this study was to examine prospective science teachers' pedagogical content knowledge in terms of their approach to error. For this purpose, a data collection tool consisting of 5 questions for conceptual understanding of electrical circuits and steps containing correct and incorrect explanations for each question was prepared and applied to prospective science teachers. This study was carried out using case study method, one of the qualitative research approaches. The participants consisted of 30 prospective science teachers studying in 4th Grade in a state university. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis method. The findings showed that the rate of prospective teachers who provided correct explanations in the solution of the questions about electrical circuits was high. In addition, the rate of detecting the solution steps given incorrectly was at a moderate level. It was revealed that very few participants who identified the wrong solution steps were able to make correct explanations for the solution of the question. Majority of the participants had some misconceptions such as "Generators are constant current sources", "Local reasoning" and "Regardless of how the generator and light bulbs are connected in the circuit, if the number of generators increases, the brightness of the bulb increases". These misconceptions were evaluated as an indication that prospective teachers' pedagogical content knowledge was not at a level that could be considered sufficient in terms of understanding the student. In this context, error-based activities can be included in teaching in order to prevent the formation of misconceptions, incomplete and/or incorrect information in students or prospective teachers, and to correct existing misconceptions. The effects of error-based activities on individuals' learning can be investigated in future studies.

The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is on the rise among young adults, with higher public acceptance than traditional tobacco. A study in Taiwan employed concept mapping to explore risk and benefit perceptions of e-cigarette use among college students. The study involved 100 college students from 11 Taiwanese universities, with 50 being e-cigarette users and 50 non-users. Data collection and analysis were done with the GroupWisdom™ platform. Participants engaged in brainstorming, rating and sorting their perceptions, which were analyzed using multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analyses. The participants' mean age was 19.24 years, and 55% were male. This process resulted in the identification of 10 clusters encompassing 64 statements, with 3 clusters focused on risk perceptions, 6 on benefit perceptions, and 1 dealing with e-cigarette regulations. Notably, risk perceptions were rated higher than benefit perceptions. Non-users held significantly higher risk perceptions and lower benefit perceptions across the nine clusters related to e-cigarette use. Concept mapping proved to be an effective tool for understanding college students' perceptions. These findings can assist health educators in comprehending college students' viewpoints on e-cigarette use and in developing targeted interventions. Additionally, exploring benefit perceptions may enhance students' critical thinking skills regarding e-cigarette advertising.

Spinal alignment can be assessed without radiation using three-dimensional ultrasound imaging (3DUS). Reliable measurements could inform the ideal arm position for scoliosis radiographs. This study determined the inter-evaluator reliability of axial vertebral rotation (AVR) measurements and sagittal curve angles in healthy females from 3DUS spinal images in standing with two common radiograph arm positions: Chin and abduction (Abd). Three novice evaluators (R1, R2, and R3) measured images once. The Bland-Altman bias and limits of agreement (LOA) were calculated. T5-T12 kyphosis measurements met our bias and LOA error threshold only for R1 vs R2 in the Chin position [-0.53° (-10.7,9.7)]. The distance between the bias and the LOA also met our acceptable threshold of 5° for all mean AVRTwist, and all but one AVRTwist measurements (R1-R2_Chin = 5.9°). Three lordosis measurements did not meet our acceptable threshold (R1-R2_Chin, R1-R3_Chin, and R2-R3_Abd). The inter-evaluator reliability of novice evaluators was adequate and did not differ significantly between positions.

Student learning in simple electric circuits has been an important area in physics education research. This study builds off a previous investigation that applied the conceptual framework model to examine knowledge integration in student learning of simple electric circuits and developed a multiple-choice concept test for assessing knowledge integration in simple electric circuits. In this study, a conceptual-framework-based teaching intervention was developed and implemented in a controlled study with high school students in China to evaluate the effectiveness of the new instruction. Using the instrument developed in the previous study, a pretest, a post-test, and a delayed post-test were conducted with both groups of students. The delayed post-test was included to further evaluate knowledge retention as evidence of knowledge integration. The results suggest that the conceptual-framework-based teaching intervention was effective in promoting knowledge integration compared to the existing instruction.

Many students who enroll in a first course in linear algebra major in STEM disciplines other than mathematics. Teachers who serve such students may find it difficult to provide authentic problems from these broader areas that ignite students' interest in linear algebra. In this paper, we highlight an interdisciplinary learning activity that engages students in using linear systems of equations to model the behavior of practical electric circuits. This exercise fits nicely into standard introductory linear algebra curricula and is designed to excite students majoring in engineering, physics, or applied mathematics. We also include references to a collection of open-access resources to support instructors who want to use this material in project-based, flipped-learning, inquiry-oriented, or independent-study environments.

Purpose: Many studies have illustrated the vast advantages which blended learning has to offer to the learning community. However, when a learner accesses a digital platform, one cannot ignore the negative repercussions which the learner would be subjected to in the process. Our study tries to analyze the negative repercussions of digital media distractions on their wholistic development. Design/methodology/approach: Information pertaining to the use of digital media among students for blended learning and the consequent distractions faced by them in the process was elicited through a well-structured questionnaire from pre-university and university students. The PLS-SEM model was constructed to identify the effect of digital distractions on students' academic performance, outlook of life and health, keeping counseling and spiritual inclination as moderating variables. Findings: From our research, we inferred that the students' time spent on a digital platform was directly related with their time spent on blended learning and their tendency to get distracted. However, they were more prone to e-distractions than e-learning. Furthermore, e-learning did not enhance their academic performance. However, distractions had significant negative repercussions on their mental health. Counseling that the students were getting in their educational institutions did not play any significant role in improving their mental health. Originality/value: Studies which have been undertaken to analyze the negative repercussions of blended learning on the wholistic development of students are scarce. Given the increasing popularity of blended learning among South Asian students in recent times, our study has tried to bridge this gap.

Objective: College students use electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) more often than any other US demographic group. In a novel application of the acquired preparedness model, we examined how proximal (e.g., cognitions) and distal (e.g., dispositional) influences accounted for ENDS use and dependence. Participants: Undergraduates (N = 1075; 72% female, 74% White) from seven US campuses completed an online survey between October 2019-March 2020. Methods: We modeled ENDS use and dependence, respectively, as zero-inflated Poisson distributions with impulsivity as an independent variable and perceived risks and benefits of e-cigarettes as mediators. Results: Students higher in impulsivity perceived more benefits and, in turn, reported greater ENDS use and dependence. Curiosity and friends' use motivated ENDS initiation; stress management and nicotine motivated continued use. Conclusions: ENDS interventions should be tailored to students higher in impulsivity, as they hold more favorable perceptions of ENDS, and should enhance skills to manage stress and nicotine cravings.

This paper outlines how ideas of 'degrowth' might be used to reimagine sustainable forms of education technology. In essence, degrowth calls for a proactive renewal of technology use around goals of voluntary simplicity and slowing-down, community-based coproduction and sharing, alongside conscious minimalization of resource consumption. The paper considers how core degrowth principles of conviviality, commoning, autonomy and care have been used to develop various forms of 'radically sustainable computing'. The paper then suggests four ways in which degrowth principles might frame future thinking around education technology in terms of: (i) curtailing current manipulative forms of education technology, (ii) bolstering existing convivial forms of education technology; (iii) stimulating the development of new convivial education technologies; and (iv) developing digital technologies to achieve the eventual de-schooling of society. It is concluded that mobilisation of these ideas might support a much-needed reorientation of digital technology in education along low-impact, equitable lines.

The authors develop, use, and evaluate a spherical video-based virtual reality (SVVR) app for teaching operations management. The app contains a 360-degree photo- realistic copy of real factory environments with blended information and gamified exercises. To solve a learning assignment, students virtually immerse themselves in the factory using the app on their smartphones with virtual reality headsets, tablets, or computers. The authors developed the SVVR app together with an industrial partner, implemented it in a graduate-level course on production and operations management, and evaluated it by drawing on app user data, assignment grade scores, and an evaluation survey. The results show that students reported an overall positive learning experience and that students who engaged more in the SVVR app performed better on the assignment. This paper contributes to the literature on SVVR with evidence of the learning effects of SVVR in an operations management curriculum. It provides an example of how SVVR enables virtual factory visits, integrates gamification elements, and can be integrated into teaching.

Literature on student ideas about circuits largely focuses on misunderstandings and difficulties, with seminal papers framing student thinking as stable, difficult to change, and connected to incorrect ontological categorizations of current as a thing rather than a process. In this paper, we analyzed 417 student responses to a conceptual question about electric circuits using a lens consistent with resources theory. We found that though indicators of substance-based reasoning about current are common in student responses, this reasoning is not predictive of other difficulties reported in the literature, such as "current is consumed" or "the battery is a constant source of current." We also found that students use substance-based reasoning in resourceful ways, suggesting that substance-based reasoning may in fact be a productive starting place for instruction on circuits.

Military culture involving, for example, a lack of autonomy and hierarchical structure, has hindered Taiwanese military students' English learning and increased the difficulty to obtaining learning materials. In particular, English for specific purposes (ESP) vocabulary learning is difficult for military students when English is used as a medium of instruction. Mobile technology can be adopted to assist such students in learning ESP vocabulary. However, studies on this topic are limited. Therefore, the present study investigated military students' acceptance of mobile-assisted engineering vocabulary learning. We recruited 45 military students to complete a 4-week mobile-assisted engineering vocabulary learning task using Quizlet. A questionnaire was administered, and their responses were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. The results revealed that system characteristics positively influenced the perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness of Quizlet. Perceived usefulness positively influenced behavioural intention through attitude towards use. However, perceived ease of use did not significantly influence perceived usefulness or attitude towards use because of the limited convenience of studying at the military base. App developers and teachers should consider military students when designing apps and make design choices to maximise the ease of use of their apps outside of the classroom. The present study provides insight into mobile-assisted ESP vocabulary learning.

High-immersion virtual reality (VR) is an increasingly valued environment for language learners. Although reading constitutes a core language skill, practicing reading in VR has received little attention. In this between-subject, quantitative study, 79 intermediate learners of English at a German university were randomly assigned to view an interactive, multimedia-rich story under two conditions. In the experimental condition, subjects (the VR group) experienced the story using a high-immersion VR headset. In the comparison condition, subjects (the video group) watched a video recording (ie, screencast) of the same VR experience. In both conditions, the story was presented using identical captions in English, which served as the reading comprehension text. In addition to measuring the impact of VR on reading comprehension, validated questionnaires yielded data on the subjects' intrinsic motivation, sense of presence and cognitive load. The analysis produced several findings. First, t-tests revealed the VR group was associated with statistically significantly higher reading comprehension scores compared with the video group (p = 0.03). Second, Wilcoxon signed-rank tests showed that the VR treatment elicited statistically significantly higher levels of motivation (p [less than or equal to] 0.0001) and sense of presence (p [less than or equal to] 0.0001). Cognitive load was not significantly different between the groups (p = 0.22). Our main implication is that VR can be beneficial for reading practice.

The purpose of this article is to describe how to teach students to use smartpens to record notes in their classes. Notetaking is a complex cognitive process that requires students to listen, process, organize, and record notes, while dealing with the temporal demands of trying to record notes fast enough to keep up with the teacher. Fortunately for students with disabilities, smartpens can help them compensate for slow writing and processing speed by allowing them to record partial notes and then easily amend them after the lecture.

Science education reforms advocate modeling as a core practice in which "analogy" is a significant form and "analogical modeling" is a creative process for scientific explanation and discovery. This study adopts the self-generated analogical modeling approach involving electricity, which considers all the modeling subprocesses and includes two subtopics (circuits and energy) with incompatible ontological presuppositions as a conceptual space to develop an analogical modeling competence (AMC) instrument. Two constructs," phenomenon-related abductive premises" (Phenomenon-AbPr) and "analogical modeling processes" (AMP), that describe the increasing sophistication of students' AMC (i.e., Level 0 experience to Level 4 high-order relation) are considered. The procedures utilize a construct-based approach of developing an assessment to validate the underlying constructs and subtopics to develop the mapping between the target and the analogical models, design items, and determine outcome spaces. Data were collected from 294 Grade 6 students to examine their AMC. The item response theory technique based on the Rasch partial credit model was used to validate the two-phase model. Student results revealed that the infit and outfit mean square values were between 0.75 and 1.33, indicating acceptable item fit. Results revealed that students scored highest on the open series circuit and lowest on electric energy in the Phenomenon-AbPr phase. Most students demonstrated relational mapping in the analogical model validation (Level 3) stage, which performed best in the AMP phase. However, they struggled to transfer factors during the analogical model application and deployment (Level 0). Implications for science assessment and teaching are discussed.

Background: Cognitive load during AR use has been measured conventionally by performance tests and subjective rating. With the growing interest in physiological measurement using non-invasive biometric sensors, unbiased real-time detection of cognitive load in AR is expected. However, a range of sensors and parameters are used in various subject fields, and reported results are fragmented. Objectives: The aim of this review is to analyse systematically how physiological methods have been used to measure cognitive load and what the implications are for the future research on AR-based tools. Methods: This paper took the systematic review approach. Through screening with 10 exclusion criteria, 23 studies, that contain 3 key elements: AR-based intervention, cognitive state examination and physiological methods, were identified, analysed and synthesised. Results: Physiological methods in their current form require reference to provide meaningful interpretations and suggestions. Therefore, they are often combined with conventional methods. Many studies investigate the effect of wearable devices in comparison with non-AR stimuli, which has been controversial, but detection of different causes of cognitive load are on the horizon. Eye-tracking is the method most used and most consistent in the use of its parameters. Conclusions: A multi-method approach combining two or more evaluation instruments is essential for the validation of users' cognitive state. In addition to the AR stimuli in question, having another independent variable such as task difficulty in experiment design is useful. Statistical approaches with more data input could help establish a reliable scale. The future research should attempt to dissociate cognitive load caused by different effects such as device, instruction, and other AR techniques as well as intrinsic and extraneous aspects, in a better experimental setup with multiple parameters.

The Society of Music Analysis report indicated that digital music often sits uncomfortably within a curriculum where the main focus is on the non-digital. This article takes as its starting point a broad definition of digital music as both a type of music and a way that music is represented. It will examine how digital music has altered the music landscape within informal and formal educational settings, and it will explore conflicting notions of music literacy while suggesting that traditional arguments about the value of notation fluency in the digital age may be misdirected. Ultimately, it will propose a definition of 'critical music literacy' in which Western standard music notation is not the crucial consideration, with implications for the design of music curricula and for progression.

Raspberry Pi Pico, based on chip RP2040, is an easy-to-use development microcontroller board that can provide flexible input/output functions and meets the teaching needs of basic electronics to first-year university undergraduates. This article presents our blended laboratory design using Raspberry Pi Pico for the course unit Digital Circuits and Systems. Considering the impacts of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the reduced number of students attending the in-person laboratory, we provide an alternative approach using an online Raspberry Pi Pico simulator produced by Wokwi for those students who cannot attend the physical laboratory. The entire laboratory is designed by design-based learning pedagogical methodology and consists of three dependent sessions. Throughout the three laboratory sessions, first-year undergraduates are expected to understand the basic digital logic and electronic circuits by building a simplified interactive traffic light controller system using Raspberry Pi Pico and Python programming. The intended learning outcomes, full details of the blended laboratory design, and the laboratory design evaluation results are given and discussed in this article to verify the effectiveness of the blended laboratory design using Raspberry Pi Pico. By analyzing the empirical data collected from laboratory participants, the effectiveness of the proposed blended laboratory design can be well supported, and all intended learning outcomes are successfully achieved subject to the impacts of COVID-19.

To writing anything on a keyboard at all requires us to know first what to type, then to activate motor programmes for finger movements, and execute these. An interruption in the information flow at any of these stages leads to disfluencies. To capture this combination of fluent typing and typing hesitations, researchers calculate different measures from keystroke-latency data--such as mean inter-keystroke interval and pause frequencies. There are two fundamental problems with this: first, summary statistics ignore important information in the data and frequently result in biased estimates; second, pauses and pause-related measures are defined using threshold values which are, in principle, arbitrary. We implemented a series of Bayesian models that aimed to address both issues while providing reliable estimates for individual typing speed and statistically inferred process disfluencies. We tested these models on a random sample of 250 copy-task recordings. Our results illustrate that we can model copy typing as a mixture process of fluent and disfluent key transitions. We conclude that mixture models (1) map onto the information cascade that generate keystrokes, and (2) provide a principled approach to detect disfluencies in keyboard typing.

Argumentation plays a central role in the development and justification of scientific knowledge. Learners could attain a more scientifically acceptable conceptual understanding by attending argumentation-based discussions. During argumentation-based discussions, students need to activate some metacognitive processes related to concept learning, such as being aware of their and others' existing concepts, monitoring the consistency between their own claims and counterclaims, and evaluating the validity of the evidence they applied to justify their claims. In this article, some prompts were inserted that aim to activate preservice science teachers' (PSTs') metaconceptual processes explicitly and systematically into the stages of Predict-Observe-Explain activities, one of the ways to engage students in argumentation. This activity aimed to facilitate PSTs in constructing more scientifically acceptable concepts about simple electrical circuits by ensuring the activation of various metaconceptual processes as they justify or reason the validity of different claims.

Technology is advancing and metaverse is gaining popularity. The magic of metaverse is beyond our imagination. In simple terms, the metaverse refers to a virtual shared space that exists online, where people can interact, socialise, work, and play using digital avatars, just like they do in the real world. It is a combination of virtual reality, augmented reality, and the internet, all rolled into one immersive environment. Virtual reality (VR) immerses users in entirely computer-generated environments through headsets, while augmented reality (AR) overlays digital information onto the real world, enhancing the user's perception. This paper introduces new strategies to bring healthcare into the metaverse by providing solutions to the hurdles that have kept us from exploring this idea. These include reducing data transfer delays in the metaverse, making VR headsets more affordable, accurately predicting diseases by studying symptoms, and creating a platform for medical professionals to practice procedures on avatars before performing them on real patients. Metaverse has immense scope of revolutionising the healthcare and we are yet to unfold its complete usefulness.
