The background and contextual meaning of the discourse used, especially in political messages and news content, shape how audiences perceive it. Particularly due to its influential power over the masses, the language used by the media is highly significant. How news is presented with what kind of headline, content, and surrounding context plays a crucial role in constructing the conveyed meaning. In this regard, the 31 March 2024 elections in Turkey, which have had long-lasting implications, and the language used by the media provide an excellent subject for analysis. Therefore, in this study, a critical discourse analysis was conducted on visual and written news texts published on 1 April 2024 in the national-level newspapers in Turkey, including Akşam, Cumhuriyet, Korkusuz, Milliyet, Posta, Sabah, Sözcü, Takvim and Yeni Şafak, regarding the 31 March 2024 Local Elections. News related to the topic was analyzed using Teun Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model, leading to conclusions about the biased behavior of the newspapers and how they presented the news in that direction to the readers. This study delves into the perspectives of Turkish labor unions (TÜRK-İŞ, HAK-İŞ, DİSK) and employers' associations (DİSK, TİSK) about Turkey's EU accession. Employing Critical Discourse Analysis, it uncovers how these narratives mirror the intricate interplay of economic, political, and social elements in EU-Turkey relations. Analyzing speeches and documents, the research spots common and differing viewpoints. The findings reveal a universal desire for just EU integration, but with distinct emphases on sovereignty, economy, and social justice. This work sheds light on Turkey's unique position in EU affairs and the influence of various interest group narratives on international policy-making.

This study uses Fairclough's model of critical discourse analysis with regard to 15 ayahs from the Qur'an's Madani Surahs to delineate how God deals with hypocrites' claims in order to decode the ideological view of hypocrites' discourse and improve critical Qur'anic knowledge about hypocrites. This study examines the ideological structures at the descriptive level to reveal the central meanings in the deep structures of these ayahs and to understand the Qur'an's discoursebuilding methods against hypocrisy. This study is distinguished by its use of an interdisciplinary approach to examine ayahs while also using classical and contemporary interpretations. Based on the data analysis, the Qur'an uses discursive constructions at the descriptive level, including semantic opposition, conditional and negative statements, indirect quotations, modality, active and passive verbs, rhetorical questions, and explicit criticism when dealing with hypocrites to refute and rebuke the discourse of hypocrisy. The exploration of the ayahs' discourse at the interpretive level reflects the context of the situation at the time of revelation and the psychological element that reflects the presence of hypocritical discourse in society. At the explanatory level, the analysis demonstrates the depth of how the Qur'an confronts the hypocrites' claims to persuade the audience by constructing religious, functional, and motivational criticisms, as well as by using monotheistic ideology and belief in the afterlife. Bu çalışma, deliliğin kültürel temsilini bir sosyal içerme meselesi olarak sorunsallaştırarak yerli televizyon anlatılarında delilik söylemlerine odaklanmaktadır. Çalışma, üretilen söylemlerin yaşanmış deneyimi olan kişileri ne dereceye kadar failliklerini ve deneyimin kolektif boyutlarını öne çıkaracak şekilde güçlendiren veya kişileri nesneleştirme ve deneyimi bireyselleştirme yoluyla güçsüzleştiren mesajlar ürettiğini incelemektedir. Deliliğe dair popüler anlatılar, deliliği bir hastalık veya anomalite olarak gören tıbbi söylemin hakimiyetindedir. Tıbbi perspektiften çerçevelenen bu temsiller, deneyimi bireyselleştirdiği ve karmaşıklığını görünmez kıldığı gerekçesiyle deliliği sosyokültürel perspektiften incelemeyi öneren disiplinlerce eleştirilmiştir. Literatür, son yıllarda televizyon ve sinema anlatılarında deliliğin tıbbi temsillerinin yanı sıra deneyimin farklı katmanlarını ortaya çıkaran sunumlarının da belirmeye başladığını göstermektedir. Bu çalışma, bu verilere dayanarak yerli televizyon anlatılarında delilik temsillerinin çeşitlenip çeşitlenmediğini incelemek için son yılların en popüler televizyon dizilerinden biri olan “Kırmızı Oda”ya odaklanmaktadır. Çalışma engellilik çalışmalarının sunduğu eleştirel perspektiften yararlanarak Kırmızı Oda dizisini Eleştirel Söylem Analizi yöntemiyle çözümlemektedir. Bulgular, Kırmızı Oda dizisinin klişelerin ötesinde bazı alternatif söylemler sunmasına rağmen deliliği baskın bir şekilde hastalık, anomalite ve kişisel bir trajedi olarak çerçeveleyerek hakim söylemleri yeniden ürettiğini göstermektedir. Çalışma, engellilik çalışmalarının eleştirel perspektifini kullanarak, delilik hakkında üretilen popüler anlamları, ayrımcılık, erişilebilirlik ve savunuculuk temaları ile ilişki içinde incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır.

The depiction of identity in foreign policy analysis is typically presented as inherent or predetermined. However, discursive approaches within the field, particularly poststructuralism, have emphasized foreign policy discourse's influence on identity formation. The main aim of this paper is to elucidate the performative relationship between identity and foreign policy through a poststructuralist lens, even in situations that are not existential or geographically proximate crises. This study employs a critical discourse analysis methodology to examine the performative dynamics between foreign policy discourse by the Justice and Development Party (AKP) policymakers and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) about distant natural disasters and the construction of the Turkish national identity. The study presents three primary findings: firstly, the AKP's foreign policy discourse recognizes the Indonesia and Pakistan disasters as significant events, in contrast to the case of Haiti; secondly, this discourse constructs a homogenous Turkish identity; and thirdly, this homogeneous Turkish identity qualifies by several signifiers and is distinguished from external others.

Bu durum analizinde, çocukların okuyabileceği bir haber metninin yalın anlamının yanı sıra çocukların algı boyutundaki öneminin, metindeki örtük mesajları anlayıp yorumlamalarında görsellerin işlevinin ve savaşın medyada yer alış biçiminin diyolojik açıdan ifade edilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmanın katılımcılarını İstanbul Bakırköy’deki bir ilkokulun 4. sınıfına devam eden altı çocuk oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın verileri odak grup görüşme soruları ve doküman incelemeleriyle toplanmıştır. Haber metninden yazılı ve karikatürlerden ise görsel doküman olarak faydalanılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler eleştirel söylem analiziyle çözümlenmiştir. Haber metninin analizi ile elde edilen sonuçlar, çocuklara yönelik üslubu içerdiği ve Türkiye’nin yardımsever bir ülke olduğu vurgusu ile bitmiştir. Çocuk gerçekliğini önemseyen ve çocuğa göreliğe uygun anlayışta bir metin olduğu söylenebilir. Katılımcı çocuklardan elde edilen verilerin analizi sonucunda, savaşın sınırlı bir yaşamı gerektirdiği, konfordan uzak, yaşam hakkının yitirildiği, ırkçılık ve ayrımcılığı var ettiğini, savaştaki çocukların diğer çocuklarla eşit olamadığını ve birçok zorunluluk içinde oldukları, çocuk haklarının ihlal edildiği belirtilmiştir. Katılımcı çocuklar savaş olgusu içinde empati kurduklarında kendi yaşantılarından örnekler vererek iyi oluş hallerinin savaşın çocukların da hakkı olduğunu dile getirmiştir. Çocukların sözcük seçimlerinde birinci tekil ve çoğul şahıs tercih ederek kendilerini önceledikleri, savaşa karşıt olduklarını ifade edebilme adına savaşı anlatmak istediklerinde olumsuzluk hissi ve anlamı veren sözcük seçiminde bulundukları görülmektedir. Katılımcı çocukların vatanı olan Türkiye’yi savaş halindeki ülkelere yardım eden konumda gördükleri ifadelerinde yer almaktadır. Katılımcı çocukların söylemlerinde “hak, insan ve çocuk” gibi sözcük ve kavramların kullanımına bakıldığında tüm çocuklar için eşitlik talebinde oldukları vurgulanmaktadır. Haber metniyle ilişkilendirilen karikatürlere dair katılımcı çocukların söylemlerine savaş insanının kıyafetlerinin yıpranmışlığı, evsiz kalmaları ve bu sebeple ev hayalleri olduğu ve son olarak göç etmeleri biçiminde yansımıştır.

Anadolu Rock müziğinin en önemli temsilcilerinden olan Cem Karaca’nın yaptığı müzikle olduğu kadarsol siyasi duruşu ile de öne çıktığı bilinmektedir. Şarkılarında komünizm propagandası yaptığı iddiasıylahakkında yargılama süreci başlatılan Karaca, yurt dışında olduğu sırada 12 Eylül 1980 Askeri Darbesigerçekleşmiştir. Hakkındaki yargı sürecinin tamamlanması için geri çağrılan Karaca bu talebi reddetmiş,sonrasında da 1983’te Türk vatandaşlığından çıkarılmıştır. Karaca, darbe yönetiminin ardından ANAP(Anavatan Partisi) döneminde yumuşayan siyasi atmosfer sayesinde 1987’de Türkiye’ye dönebilmiştir.Bu çalışmada amaç, Suskunluk Sarmalı Kuramı’nın Türk basınındaki etkisini Karaca’nın vatandaşlıktançıkarılışı ve Türkiye’ye dönüşü süreçleriyle ilgili haberler üzerinden araştırmaktır. Bu çerçevede Cumhuriyetgazetesindeki haberler, eleştirel söylem analizi yöntemiyle çözümlenmiştir. Bulgular, Cumhuriyetgazetesinde Karaca’nın hem vatandaşlıktan çıkarılışına hem de Türkiye’ye dönüşüne ilişkin haberlerdefarklı tutumlar yansıtılmasına karşın her iki süreci işleyen haberlerin de resmi söylemle uyumlu olduğunugöstermektedir. Hem darbe yönetimi sürecinde hem de ANAP döneminde, muhalif olma iddiasındakibir gazetedeki haberlerin bile baskın görüşle örtüşmesi, ‘Suskunluk Sarmalı’nın varlığını açıkça ortayakoymaktadır.

Online networks are effective communication spaces where discourses are produced and ideas are shared. On the other hand, the discourses produced in these networks sometimes turn into hate speech. On the other hand, the discourses produced in these networks sometimes turn into hate speech and are reproduced by spreading rapidly with the opportunities provided by digitalization. One of the groups where hate speech is produced in online networks is the Syrian refugees who came to Turkey due to the civil war in their country in 2011. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the hate speech produced in reader comments. The research focuses on the reader comments of the news about the attacks on Syrian refugees in Altındağ on 10 August 2021. In this context, the data related to the news were obtained from the news website ensonhaber.com and analyzed with Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model. As a result of the research, it has been seen that hate speech against Syrian refugees is produced through reader comments. It has been determined that these discourses are produced in the context of content that includes othering, racist approaches, and incites violence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dünya üzerinde ortaya çıkan ilk vakanın ardından salgından en çok etkilenen grubun yaşlılar, kronik rahatsızlığı olanlar, kanser hastaları, kronik solunum yolu hastalığı olanlar ve sağlık çalışanları olduğu sürekli olarak kamuoyuyla paylaşılmıştır. Bunun yanında yaşlarından dolayı birden fazla hastalığa sahip olan yaşlıların COVID-19’dan daha çok etkilendiği ve yaşlıları korumak için mecbur kalmadıkça dışarı çıkmamaları gerektiği hem hükümet söylemleriyle hem de medya yoluyla sürekli olarak hatırlatılmıştır. Özellikle 11 Mart 2020’de ülkede ilk vakanın görülmesiyle vaka ve ölüm sayılarının yaşlılar üzerinden açıklanması, salgının tehlikeli boyutunu gözler önüne sermiş ve yaşlılar için “evde kal” çağrısı yapılmıştır. Bu çağrılar yaşlıların risk altında olduğunu hatırlatmak ve onları korumak için yapılırken zamanla halk tarafından bu söylemlerin yönü değişmiş ve yaşlıların özellikle sosyal medya yoluyla damgalandığı, ötekileştirildiği ve nefret söylemine maruz kaldığı görülmüştür. Bu çalışma, Twitter’da gençler tarafından yaşlılara yönelik olumsuz söylemler içeren tweet’leri anlamlandırmak amacıyla yapılmıştır. Çalışmanın amacına bağlı olarak nitel araştırma yöntem ve teknikleri kullanılmış ve pandemi döneminde Twitter’da paylaşılan tweet’ler sürekli okumalar sonucunda temalar altında toplanarak Teun A. van Dijk’ın eleştirel söylem analizi yöntemiyle analiz edilmiş ve yaşlıların pandemi dönemiyle birlikte karşılaştıkları sorunlar değerlendirilmiştir.

Eğitim, örgün ve yaygın ağlarda toplumun değerleri, anlam-değer dünyası, refleksleri gözetilerek yürütülen bir süreçtir. Toplumsal değişim ve dönüşümler etkiledikleri tüm diğer faktörler gibi eğitimi de etkilemektedir. Eğitim surecinde hem öğreticiler hem öğrenciler açısından temel kaynak ders kitabıdır. Ders kitapları akademik içerikler kadar sosyal, kültürel içerikleri de bünyesinde barındırmaktadır. 19. yüzyıldan bu tarafa sosyal bilimlerin neredeyse tüm alanlarında gündem olan modernizm eğitimin de gündeminde yer almaktadır. 20. yüzyılda zirvesine ulaşan modernizm, yeniliklerle beraber maddi, manevî çözülmeleri de getirmiştir. Bu bağlamda eğitimin kurumsal politika belirleyicileri bu çözülmelere önlemler almıştır. Bu araştırmada kod çözme, yüzey yapının arkasındaki semantik katmanlara ulaşma olarak tarif edilen eleştirel söylem analizi yöntemi kullanılmış; MEB onaylı Türkçe ders kitaplarında modernizmin çözücü, bozucu etkilerine yönelik inşa edilen söylemler analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma bünyesinde modernizmle ilişkili yabancılaşmanın, popüler kültürün ve popüler kültür etkisindeki dil pratiklerinin, kapitalizmin inşa ettiği ben merkezli insan tipinin eleştirildiği; hedef kitlenin davranış ve tutumlarının metin söylemiyle manipüle edilmeye çalışıldığı; hedef kitlenin zihinsel şemalarının şekillendirilmeye çalışıldığı tespit edilmiştir.

The communication dimension of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has caused serious destruction worldwide, is at an important point. It is seen that there are changes in the advertising strategies of brands in this process, where different methods are used especially in the media and advertising fields. In this context, this study examines how the pandemic is used in advertisement launched during the Covid-19 process. In this direction, in this study, how the pandemic was handled in advertisements launched during the Covid-19 pandemic process and how it was used in advertisements by brands was analyzed by the method of critical discourse analysis. Therefore, the aim of this study is to reveal how brands try to benefit from a health-related issue and how this effort is revealed in advertisements. Within the scope of the research, the advertisements of three different brands that were broadcast on television channels and operating in different sectors during the Covid-19 pandemic in Turkey were examined. According to the findings, it is seen that advertisers prepare advertisements with emotional tones and consciously benefit from the appeal of fear. As a result, it should be considered as a reflection of the current system that brands try to benefit from this fear in their advertisements at a time when individuals are afraid of losing health. Even in a pandemic that threatens human health, this effort in order not to decrease of consumption rate shows once again the ravage of the capitalist system.

İngiliz Kültürel Çalışmaları medya metinlerini de ideolojik yeniden üretimin gerçekleştiği ve aynı zamanda ideolojik mücadelenin verildiği bir alan olarak görmektedir. Din ve ideoloji ilişkisi, medyanın ideolojik olduğu görüşüyle bir araya geldiğinde çok katmanlı bir alan oluşturmaktadır. Bu çalışma, Messiah dizisi bağlamında Mehdi/Mesih inancını incelemeyi ve din, kültür, ideoloji, politika, hegemonya ve medya açısından dizinin topluma ilettiği mesajları görünür kılmayı amaçlamaktadır. Dizide yer alan, uluslararası ilişkiler kapsamında dini, siyasi, kültürel temsillere ve kodlara ilişkin söylemler, anlamın dil aracılığıyla inşa edildiğini vurgulayan ve eleştirel paradigma içinde yer alan inşacı temsil yaklaşımı ve Van Dijk’ın kavramlarından yola çıkılarak eleştirel söylem analizi yapılacaktır. Birinci sezonu oluşturan dizinin on bölümü üzerinden yapılan analizde, dizinin söyleminin dinin ideolojik yönünü hem birleştirici hem de ayrıştırıcı niteliği açısından vurgularken bilinen din ve inançları tartışmaya açarak bunların yerine yeni bir din ve düzen söylemi inşa ettiği tespit edilmiştir.

The aim of this study is to examine the aims of the Kanal Istanbul Project with Gee's critical discourse analysis method. According to Gee's Critical discourse analysis method, language has seven functions such as giving (not) importance, introducing practices, creating identities, establishing relationships, policy (distribution of social goods), connections and sign information systems. In addition, there are six tools for revealing these functions, such as social languages, intertextuality, speeches, discourse, positioned meaning and figured worlds. This study is based on the 'Connections Building' function, one of the functions of language, and the 'Figured Worlds' tool from the tools. In other words, in the text to be analyzed, the connections building function of the language has been tried to be revealed through figured worlds. The subject of the study is the Kanal Istanbul Project; method is Gee's critical discourse analysis method. The importance of the study is to bring Gee's analysis method to the national literature in detail, to exemplify how to apply this method with the Kanal Istanbul Project and to analyze the text with the aims of the project in terms of the connections building function of the language. As a result of the study, it was concluded that with the Kanal Istanbul Project, many events, situations, subjects and scenarios have a function of making connections between figured worlds and language. Mankurt and kozkaman are concepts that have been expressed with increasing frequency by Turkish politicians in recent years and have found a parallel place in the Turkish press. When examined in terms of origin, it is possible to say that both concepts are derived from the Epic of Manas. The concepts of mankurt and kozkaman, which are still up-to-date today, and the stories in which the concepts make sense, offer important opportunities to make sense of today's political and cultural world. The main purpose of this study is to reveal what the concepts of mankurt and kozkaman from the Epic of Manas mean, in which contexts they are used today and the reflections of these contexts in the Turkish press. In the existing literature, mankurt and kozkaman concepts are frequently examined in the context of literature, and the political dimensions of the concepts, their reflections in the press generally ignored. The study evaluates this situation as problematic. The media is among the most important devices of today in informing and raising awareness of individuals and societies, transferring the collective memory to future generations and shaping the attitudes and behaviors of individuals. In this direction, it is very important to examine the reflections of the concepts in the media. In this context, the representations of the concepts of mankurt and kozkaman between the years 2015 - 2020 in Turkish newspapers Yeniçağ, Yeni Şafak, Sabah, Hürriyet, Cumhuriyet and Evrensel, which have different ideological publishing understanding, have been analyzed in accordance with the critical discourse analysis method developed by Teun Van Dijk. According to the data obtained, the concepts are used in conjunction with nationalist discourses, the public is warned against the "terrorist elements" with these concepts, the person or people who belittle their country and culture, and denigrate their own country to the "imperialist states" are described as mankurt and közkaman. The media, which has very important functions in the life of societies, and which is used in the policy development of states or people with its pioneering role in matters such as news, information, etc., aims to reach people from all walks of life, and this feature positions it as a means of mass communication. Within the scope of this study, it aims to evaluate the role of the media in the presentation of the coup or memorandum news, which is very closely related to society and the public. As an example, the news texts of two newspapers representing different views on the subject, which is described as the "retired admirals' statement" in April 2021 in the media, were handled, and analysis was tried to be made within the framework of T. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis as a qualitative research method. In the findings obtained as a result of the study, it was concluded that the media has an important role in creating discourse, as well as a social power, and it has a direct effect on the ideological view on the texts and the discourse preferences completely differ in line with their ideological view the comments and evaluations are included in this direction. Neoliberalism supports the realization of monetary policy by independent central banks, which are independent of politics, where expertise and science come to the fore around the principles of technocracy. In this study, central bank independence is examined in terms of support of political parties in the context of adaptation to neoliberalism and technocracy in Turkey. Neoliberalism in Turkey is completely settled with the "Transition to Strong Economy Program" in 2001. Before and after this program, election statements announced in 1999 and 2002 by political parties were selected as the analysis of the material in order to determine the preferences of political parties regarding central bank independence. Statements regarding central bank independence in the election statements were analyzed using the Critical Discourse Analysis method. The findings show that parties with different ideologies and different wings of politics support the independent central bank in monetary policy and announced it to their voters for the purposes of price stability, lowering inflation, reducing public deficits, and preventing the intervention of politics. As a result, political parties have adapted to neoliberalism and supported central bank independence, even if it was incompatible with their ideology and voters' preferences. Each political party has abandoned its own ideology in the economy, and each has turned into a neoliberal political institution. Under the rule of technocracy, monetary policy has gained a neutral identity in the face of social problems in the context of scientific and expertise principles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents a qualitative analysis of how newspaper articles represent Syrian refugees. The research is a cross-sectional study covering the period between 28 February 2020 and 15 May 2020, when Turkey opened the European border gate to immigrants. In the research, the news about Syrian refugees published in the newspapers Hürriyet, Sabah, and Sözcü, which have the highest circulation and different publication policies, were examined. To reach the news, the keywords "immigrant", "refugee", "asylum seeker" and "Syrian" were searched in the newspaper archives. The research question is: How are the Syrian refugees represented in the news by the newspapers with the highest circulation and different publication policies? The study is based on the analysis of the dimensions of text, discursive practices, and social practices, which Fairclough systematized in his critical discourse analysis. Findings indicate that the news about refugees are taken out of context, refugees are positioned as objects rather than subjects, and similar representations are preferred, mostly by creating an implicit us/them distinction. These representations and discursive and social practices contribute to the reproduction of existing power relations. The results of the study show that the publishing policies of the newspapers do not always differentiate their news content, and sometimes they adopt similar discourses and representations in certain periods. Cinema is affected by the political, economic, social, and, cultural changes of the society it is in. For this reason, cinema, especially comedy, is one of the oldest and most important types, besides reflecting changes of the country it is in. Since 1960Õs radical social-economic changes have happened in Turkey. This paper examines the impact of the social upheavals on comedy cinema (1970-2010) in Turkey. The article is to provide analysis of the reflections of the social upheavals that occurred in the aftermath of two dramatic periods (1960-1980/1980-2010) in the country. The paper first discusses the main characteristics of the eras when the films were made. Then, selected samples of Turkish comedy films are examined drawing upon Norman FaircloughÕs critical discourse analysis.
