Holland has found that his theory of vocational choice is a fair predictor of college women's vocational choices. This study investigated the applicability of Holland's theory to women employed full-time. The relationship of the criterion variables of achievement (salary) and job satisfaction to the predictor variables of homogeneity, consistency, congruency and role choice were investigated. A stratified sample of 348 women employed as factory workers, research scientists, teachers, bank employees, managers and supervisors, and commercial artists, interior decorators, writers represented Holland's six occupational types. An inverse relationship existed between homogeneity and salaries for Social and Artistic sub-groups. No relationship existed between homogeneity and salaries for the Total group or the Realistic, Investigative, Conventional, and Enterprising sub-groups. Moderately satisfied women in the Total group had significantly higher homogeneity scores than either the satisfied or dissatisfied women in the Total group. No significant difference was apparent between satisfaction and homogeneity when the group was divided into sub-groups. (Author)

In team sports analytics, long-term player tracking remains a challenging task due to player appearance similarity, occlusion, and dynamic motion patterns. Accurately re-identifying players and reconnecting tracklets after extended absences from the field of view or prolonged occlusions is crucial for robust analysis. We introduce SportsSUSHI, a hierarchical graph-based approach that leverages domain-specific features, including jersey numbers, team IDs, and field coordinates, to enhance tracking accuracy. SportsSUSHI achieves high performance on the SoccerNet dataset and a newly proposed hockey tracking dataset. Our hockey dataset, recorded using a stationary camera capturing the entire playing surface, contains long sequences and annotations for team IDs and jersey numbers, making it well-suited for evaluating long-term tracking capabilities. The inclusion of domain-specific features in our approach significantly improves association accuracy, as demonstrated in our experiments. Access to the plasma chamber in a stellarator reactor is essential for maintenance and diagnostics. However, the complex geometry of stellarator coils, often characterized by their strong twisting, can severely limit the space available for access ports. This study introduces a novel optimization approach in which access ports are represented as closed curves on the plasma boundary. By carefully selecting a set of objectives and penalties related to the access port, we demonstrate the first stellarator coil optimization explicitly targeting improved access port size. The trade-off between magnetic field quality and port size is analyzed through the Pareto front of their respective objectives. The optimal location of a port is explained using a current potential approach. Finally, we show that additional shaping coils, such as windowpane coils, can enable the crossing of the Pareto front to achieve superior configurations., Comment: 41 pages, 18 figures

We evaluate the roles general relativistic assumptions play in simulations used in recent observations of black holes including LIGO-Virgo and the Event Horizon Telescope. In both experiments simulations play an ampliative role, enabling the extraction of more information from the data than would be possible otherwise. This comes at a cost of theory-ladenness. We discuss the issue of inferential circularity, which arises in some applications; classify some of the epistemic strategies used to reduce the extent of theory-ladenness; and discuss ways in which these strategies are model independent., Comment: 34 pages, forthcoming in Philosophy of Science

Friedl and L\"oh (2021, Confl. Math.) prove that testing whether or not there is an epimorphism from a finitely presented group to a virtually cyclic group, or to the direct product of an abelian and a finite group, is decidable. Here we prove that these problems are $\mathsf{NP}$-complete. We also show that testing epimorphism is $\mathsf{NP}$-complete when the target is a restricted type of semi-direct product of a finitely generated free abelian group and a finite group, thus extending the class of virtually abelian target groups for which decidability of epimorphism is known. Lastly, we consider epimorphism onto a fixed finite group. We show the problem is $\mathsf{NP}$-complete when the target is a dihedral groups of order that is not a power of 2, complementing the work on Kuperberg and Samperton (2018, Geom. Measurement of the power spectrum of high redshift 21 cm emission from neutral hydrogen probes the formation of the first luminous objects and the ionization of intergalactic medium by the first stars. However, the 21 cm signal at these redshifts is orders of magnitude fainter than astrophysical foregrounds, making it challenging to measure. Power spectrum techniques may be able to avoid these foregrounds by extracting foreground-free Fourier modes, but this is exacerbated by instrumental systematics that can add spectral structure to the data, leaking foreground power to the foreground-free Fourier modes. It is therefore imperative that any instrumental systematic effects are properly understood and mitigated. One such systematic occurs when neighboring antennas have undesired coupling. A systematic in Phase II data from the MWA was identified which manifests as excess correlation in the visibilities. One possible explanation for such an effect is mutual coupling between antennas. We have built a numerical electromagnetic software simulation of the antenna beam using FEKO to estimate the amplitude of this effect for multiple antennas in the MWA. We also calculate coupling predicted by the re-radiation model which is found to be somewhat lower than the coupling coefficients produced by the simulation. We find that with many approximations both types of mutual coupling predictions are somewhat lower than the minimum necessary to detect the brightest 21 cm models. However more work is necessary to better validate the required level of coupling and to verify that approximations did not under estimate the level of coupling., Comment: 9 pages, 15 figures; submitted to MNRAS

Wave-like dark matter may feature quadratic couplings to ordinary matter. This carries profound consequences for the phenomenologies of such models. It changes the dark matter density around dense objects made from ordinary matter such as planets and stars, thereby changing the sensitivity of direct detection experiments on Earth as well as implying forces on other ordinary matter objects in the vicinity. In this note we study the time dependence of the dark matter field around spherical objects of ordinary matter. This work indicates the time-scale on which accelerating objects settle into a stationary state and delineates the applicability of stationary solutions for experimental dark matter tests. We also use this to understand (and effectively eliminate) the infinities in energies, forces, and pressures that appear when naively comparing the total energy around objects with different size but the same total number of ordinary matter particles., Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures

Immunohistochemical (IHC) stains play a vital role in a pathologist's analysis of medical images, providing crucial diagnostic information for various diseases. Virtual staining from hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained whole slide images (WSIs) allows the automatic production of other useful IHC stains without the expensive physical staining process. However, current virtual WSI generation methods based on tile-wise processing often suffer from inconsistencies in content, texture, and color at tile boundaries. These inconsistencies lead to artifacts that compromise image quality and potentially hinder accurate clinical assessment and diagnoses. To address this limitation, we propose a novel consistent WSI synthesis network, CC-WSI-Net, that extends GAN models to produce seamless synthetic whole slide images. Our CC-WSI-Net integrates a content- and color-consistency supervisor, ensuring consistency across tiles and facilitating the generation of seamless synthetic WSIs while ensuring Sox10 immunohistochemistry accuracy in melanocyte detection. We validate our method through extensive image-quality analyses, objective detection assessments, and a subjective survey with pathologists. By generating high-quality synthetic WSIs, our method opens doors for advanced virtual staining techniques with broader applications in research and clinical care.

We report the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of J$/\psi$ at forward rapidity ($1.2<|\eta|<2.2$) in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data were collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. The second Fourier coefficient ($v_2$) of the azimuthal distribution of $J/\psi$ is determined as a function of the transverse momentum ($p_T$) using the event-plane method. The measurements were performed for several selections of collision centrality: 0\%--50\%, 10\%--60\%, and 10\%-40\%. We find that in all cases the values of $v_2(p_T)$, which quantify the elliptic flow of J$/\psi$, are consistent with zero. The results are consistent with measurements at midrapidity, indicating no significant elliptic flow of the J$/\psi$ within the quark-gluon-plasma medium at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV., Comment: 369 authors from 72 institutions, 12 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. We present the first forward-rapidity measurements of elliptic anisotropy of open-heavy-flavor muons at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The measurements are based on data samples of Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. We investigate the growth of two-dimensional (2D) crystals on fluctuating surfaces using a phase field crystal model that is relevant on atomic length and diffusive time scales. Motivated by recent experiments which achieved unprecedented fast growth of large-size high-quality 2D crystals on liquid substrates, we uncover novel effects of liquid surfaces on microstructural ordering. We find that substrate fluctuations generate short-ranged noise that speeds up crystallization and grain growth of the overlayer, surpassing that of free-standing system. Coupling to the liquid substrate fluctuations can also modulate local randomness, leading to intriguing disordered structures with hidden spatial order, i.e., disordered hyperuniformity. These results reveal the physical mechanisms underlying the fast growth of 2D crystals on liquid surfaces and demonstrate a novel strategy for synthesizing disordered hyperuniform thin film structures., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

In this work the influence of $5|7$ dislocations in multiplayer graphene stacks (up to six layers) is examined. The study is conducted through a recently developed Phase Field Crystal (PFC) model for multilayer systems incorporating out-of-plane deformations and parameterized to match to density functional theory calculations for graphene bilayers and other systems. The specific configuration considered consists of one monolayer containing four $5|7$ dislocations (i.e., two dislocation dipoles) sandwiched in between perfect graphene layers. The study reveals how the strain field from the dislocations in the defected layer leads to out-of-plane deformations that in turn cause deformations of neighboring layers. Quantitative predictions are made for the defect free energy of the multilayer stacks as compared to a defect-free system, which is shown to increase with the number of layers and system size. Furthermore it is predicted that system defect energy saturates by roughly ten sheets in the stack, indicating the range of defect influence across the multilayer. Variations of stress field distribution and layer height profiles in different layer of the stack are also quantitatively identified., Comment: 11 pages, 18 figures

We present a mesoscale field theory unifying the modeling of growth, elasticity, and dislocations in quasicrystals. The theory is based on the amplitudes entering their density-wave representation. We introduce a free energy functional for complex amplitudes and assume non-conserved dissipative dynamics to describe their evolution. Elasticity, including phononic and phasonic deformations, along with defect nucleation and motion, emerges self-consistently by prescribing only the symmetry of quasicrystals. Predictions on the formation of semi-coherent interfaces and dislocation kinematics are given., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

A connected undirected graph is called \emph{geodetic} if for every pair of vertices there is a unique shortest path connecting them. It has been conjectured that for finite groups, the only geodetic Cayley graphs are odd cycles and complete graphs. In this article we present a series of theoretical results which contribute to a computer search verifying this conjecture for all groups of size up to 1024. The conjecture is also verified for several infinite families of groups including dihedral and some families of nilpotent groups. Two key results which enable the computer search to reach as far as it does are: if the center of a group has even order, then the conjecture holds (this eliminates all $2$-groups from our computer search); if a Cayley graph is geodetic then there are bounds relating the size of the group, generating set and center (which {significantly} cuts down the number of generating sets which must be searched)., Comment: 27 pages, 4 tables, 3 figures. Jersey number recognition is an important task in sports video analysis, partly due to its importance for long-term player tracking. It can be viewed as a variant of scene text recognition. However, there is a lack of published attempts to apply scene text recognition models on jersey number data. Here we introduce a novel public jersey number recognition dataset for hockey and study how scene text recognition methods can be adapted to this problem. We address issues of occlusions and assess the degree to which training on one sport (hockey) can be generalized to another (soccer). For the latter, we also consider how jersey number recognition at the single-image level can be aggregated across frames to yield tracklet-level jersey number labels. We demonstrate high performance on image- and tracklet-level tasks, achieving 91.4% accuracy for hockey images and 87.4% for soccer tracklets. This paper discusses the results of the third edition of the Monocular Depth Estimation Challenge (MDEC). The challenge focuses on zero-shot generalization to the challenging SYNS-Patches dataset, featuring complex scenes in natural and indoor settings. As with the previous edition, methods can use any form of supervision, i.e. supervised or self-supervised. The challenge received a total of 19 submissions outperforming the baseline on the test set: 10 among them submitted a report describing their approach, highlighting a diffused use of foundational models such as Depth Anything at the core of their method. The challenge winners drastically improved 3D F-Score performance, from 17.51% to 23.72%., Comment: To appear in CVPRW2024

Given a Coxeter group $W$ with Coxeter system $(W,S)$, where $S$ is finite. We provide a complete characterization of Boolean intervals in the weak order of $W$ uniformly for all Coxeter groups in terms of independent sets of the Coxeter graph. Moreover, we establish that the number of Boolean intervals of rank $k$ in the weak order of $W$ is ${i_k(\Gamma_W)\cdot|W|}\,/\,2^{k}$, where $\Gamma_W$ is the Coxeter graph of $W$ and $i_k(\Gamma_W)$ is the number of independent sets of size $k$ of $\Gamma_W$ when $W$ is finite. Specializing to $A_n$, we recover the characterizations and enumerations of Boolean intervals in the weak order of $A_n$ given in arXiv:2306.14734. We provide the analogous results for types $C_n$ and $D_n$, including the related generating functions and additional connections to well-known integer sequences.

Stirling permutations are parking functions, and we investigate two parking function statistics in the context of these objects: lucky cars and displacement. Among our results, we consider two extreme cases: extremely lucky Stirling permutations (those with maximally many lucky cars) and extremely unlucky Stirling permutations (those with exactly one lucky car). We show that the number of extremely lucky Stirling permutations of order $n$ is the Catalan number $C_n$, and the number of extremely unlucky Stirling permutations is $(n-1)!$. We also give some results for luck that lies between these two extremes. Further, we establish that the displacement of any Stirling permutation of order $n$ is $n^2$, and we prove several results about displacement composition vectors. A novel form of the current potential, a mathematical tool for the design of stellarators and stellarator coils, is developed. Specifically, these are current potentials with a finite-element-like basis, called \textit{current potential patches}. Current potential patches leverage the relationship between distributions of magnetic dipoles and current potentials to explore limits of the access properties of stellarator coil sets. An example calculation is shown using the Helically Symmetric Experiment (HSX) equilibrium, demonstrating the method's use in coil design and understanding the limits of the access properties of coil sets. Current potential patches have additional desirable properties such as of promoting sparse current sheet solutions and identifying crucial locations of shaping current placement. A result is found for the HSX equilibrium that shaping currents covering only 25\% of the winding surface is sufficient to produce the equilibrium to a good accuracy, provided a toroidal field is pre-supplied.

We perform a systematic study of permutation statistics and bijective maps on permutations using SageMath to search the FindStat combinatorial statistics database to identify apparent instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP). Cyclic sieving occurs on a set of objects, a statistic, and a map of order $n$ when the evaluation of the statistic generating function at the $d$th power of the primitive $n$th root of unity equals the number of fixed points under the $d$th power of the map. Of the apparent instances found in our experiment, we prove 34 new instances of the CSP, and conjecture three more. Furthermore, we prove the equidistribution of some statistics and show that some maps have the same orbit structure, thus cyclic sieving holds for more even more pairs of a map and a statistic. The maps which exhibit the CSP include reverse/complement, rotation, Lehmer code rotation, toric promotion, and conjugation by the long cycle, as well as a map constructed by Corteel to swap the number of nestings and crossings, the invert Laguerre heap map, and a map of Alexandersson and Kebede designed to preserve right-to-left minima. Our results show that, contrary to common expectations, actions that exhibit homomesy are not necessarily the best candidates for the CSP, and vice versa., Comment: 32 pages, 4 figures

We examine the justification for taking the Event Horizon Telescope's famous 2019 image to be a reliable representation of the region surrounding a black hole. We argue that it takes the form of a robustness argument, with the resulting image being robust across variation in a range of data-analysis pipelines. We clarify the sense of "robustness" operating here and show how it can account for the reliability of astrophysical inferences, even in cases -- like the EHT -- where these inferences are based on experiments that are (for all practical purposes) unique.
