Many Australians who work outdoors (notably, farmers and graziers) routinely kill venomous snakes. We argue that this attitude is misguided and dangerous. Despite their fearsome reputation, venomous Australian snakes pose little risk to human health (snakes kill an average of less than three people per year in Australia). Also, snakes confer a substantial benefit by consuming agricultural pests such as rodents. We estimate the magnitude of that benefit with data on snake diets, feeding rates and abundances. The most valuable rodent‐controllers are Brownsnakes (genus Pseudonaja), which are rodent‐specialists as adults and are abundant in agroecosystems across much of Australia. We calculate that a free‐living adult Eastern Brownsnake consumes at least 50 mice per year (probably twice that number), and that population densities of Brownsnakes in agricultural areas can exceed 100 per km2. Thus, Brownsnakes remove thousands of mice per square kilometre of farmland per year. That offtake plausibly reduces rodent densities because Brownsnakes take all age classes and both sexes of rodents by hunting in burrows. Tolerating Brownsnakes also would benefit the environment (e.g. less reliance on toxic chemicals) and the health of humans and domestic pets (fewer rodent‐mediated diseases) and counter‐intuitively, might reduce rates of snakebite (because many bites occur when a snake is attacked). Snake venoms constitute a complex blend of proteins and peptides, with their toxicity and pharmacological effects varying depending on their geographic origin. Naja haje, a venomous snake of significant medical importance in regions like Morocco and North Africa, can inflict severe pain, swelling, and neurotoxic symptoms upon biting. Without prompt medical intervention, these symptoms can rapidly worsen, potentially leading to fatal outcomes. Understanding the venom’s components is crucial for developing effective antivenom therapies. Specific antibodies that target the venom’s toxic elements are essential for neutralising its activity. Therefore, we conducted a proteomic analysis of these elements within Naja haje venom using gel filtration, HPLC, and mass spectrometry. Our findings identified eight fractions, among which fractions 5 and 6 exhibited notable toxicity, with fraction 5 resulting in mortality. Furthermore, we observed a prevalence of 3FTx, a diverse component in Naja venom, alongside short-chain neurotoxins such as short neurotoxin, cytotoxin, and muscarinic toxin-like proteins. Recognising these harmful elements is crucial for developing precise antivenom treatments. This investigation represents the first proteomic analysis of toxic fractions from Naja haje venom in Morocco, providing valuable insights into venom composition and aiding in the development of targeted therapies. Introduction There is a significant shortage of observational studies on neurotoxic snakebite envenomation in the Philippines. This lack of data, especially concerning treatment using Purified Cobra Antivenom (PCAV), has prompted the initiation of this foundational study. Methods The target population included snakebite patients admitted to the Eastern Visayas Medical Center and treated with PCAV between 2016 and 2020. A retrospective chart review was conducted for data collection. The investigation analyzed the hospital stay and patient features of individuals who were administered either lower or higher doses of PCAV. Results Eighty-two patients were identified during the study. Of these, 27 (33%) were under 20 years of age and 50 (61%) were male. Most patients, totalling 75 (92%) were hailed from rural areas. Of the 82 patients, 59 (72%) received one or two ampoules of PCAV during the course. However, patients who received more than two ampoules had a longer median hospital stay than those who received less than three ampoules [96 h (interquartile range, IQR 66–122) vs. 125 h (IQR 96–218), P  = 0.038]. The study reported five in-hospital mortalities (6.1%). Conclusions The individuals who needed a high dosage of PCAV tended to have more extended hospital stays, yet over 70% of the patient population required a lower dosage. To gain a clearer understanding of the burden of neurotoxic snakebites and determine the optimal PCAV dosage based on disease severity in the area, a more comprehensive, prospective study is recommended. Snake envenomation poses a significant risk to Malaysians and country visitors. Malaysia witnesses an estimated 650 snake bites per 100,000 population annually. The primary treatment for snake envenomation involves administering antivenom derived from horses, despite its drawbacks, such as anaphylactic reactions and serum sickness. Identifying the venom proteome is crucial for understanding and predicting the clinical implications of envenomation and developing effective treatments targeting specific venom proteins. In this study, we employ an immunoprecipitation assay followed by LC-MS/MS to identify antigenic proteins in five common venomous snakes in Malaysia compassing of two families which are pit vipers, (Calloselasma rhodostoma and Cryptelytrops purpureomaculatus) and cobras (Ophiophagus hannah, Naja kaouthia, and Naja sumatrana). The immunoprecipitation assay utilises a 2 % agarose gel, allowing antigenic proteins to diffuse and bind with antibodies in the antivenom. The antivenom utilised in this research was procured from the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute (QSMI), Thailand, including king cobra antivenom (KCAV), cobra antivenom (CAV), Malayan pit viper antivenom (MPAV), Russell's viper antivenom (RPAV), hematopolyvalent antivenom (HPAV), neuropolyvalent antivenom (NPAV), banded krait antivenom (BKAV), and Malayan krait antivenom (MKAV). The protein identified through these interactions which are exclusive to the cobras are three-finger toxins (3FTXs) while snake C-type lectins (Snaclecs) are unique to the pit vipers. Common protein that are present in both families are L-amino acid oxidase (LAAO), Phospholipase A2 (PLA2), and snake venom metalloproteinase (SVMP). Identifying these proteins is vital for formulating a broad-spectrum antivenom applicable across multiple species.

Estimation of evolutionary relationships among lineages that rapidly diversified can be challenging, and, in such instances, inaccurate or unresolved phylogenetic estimates can lead to erroneous conclusions regarding historical geographical ranges of lineages. One example underscoring this issue has been the historical challenge posed by untangling the biogeographic origin of elapoid snakes, which includes numerous dangerously venomous species as well as species not known to be dangerous to humans. The worldwide distribution of this lineage makes it an ideal group for testing hypotheses related to historical faunal exchanges among the many continents and other landmasses occupied by contemporary elapoid species. We developed a novel suite of genomic resources, included worldwide sampling, and inferred a robust estimate of evolutionary relationships, which we leveraged to quantitatively estimate geographical range evolution through the deep-time history of this remarkable radiation. Our phylogenetic and biogeographical estimates of historical ranges definitively reject a lingering former ‘Out of Africa’ hypothesis and support an ‘Out of Asia’ scenario involving multiple faunal exchanges between Asia, Africa, Australasia, the Americas and Europe.

Snakes contain three types of phospholipase A2 (PLA2)-inhibitory proteins in their blood, PLIα, β, and γ, which protect them from their own venom, PLA2. PLIβ is the snake ortholog of leucine-rich α2 glycoprotein (LRG). Since autologous cytochrome c (Cyt c) serves as an endogenous ligand for LRG, in this study, we purified snake LRGs from various snake serum samples using Cyt c affinity chromatography. All purified snake LRGs were found to be dimers linked by disulfide bonds. Laticauda semifasciata and Naja kaouthia LRGs showed no inhibitory activity against L. semifasciata PLA2 and weak inhibitory activity against Gloydius brevicauda basic PLA2. Elaphe climacophora PLIβ had weaker inhibitory activity against G. brevicauda basic PLA2 than G. brevicauda and Elaphe quadrivirgata PLIs, which are abundant in blood and known to neutralize G. brevicauda basic PLA2. Protobothrops flavoviridis LRG showed no inhibitory activity against basic venom PLA2, PL-X, or G. brevicauda basic PLA2. Binding analysis of P. flavoviridis LRG using surface plasmon resonance showed very strong binding to snake Cyt c, followed by that to horse Cyt c, weak binding to yeast Cyt c, and no binding to P. flavoviridis PL-X or BPI/II. We also deduced the amino acid sequences of L. semifasciata and P. flavoviridis LRG by means of cDNA sequencing and compared them with those of other known sequences of PLIs and LRGs. This study concluded that snake LRG can potentially inhibit basic PLA2, but, whether it actually functions as a PLA2-inhibitory protein, PLIβ, depends on the snake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The complex range of envenomation symptoms necessitates ongoing innovative approaches for the effective treatment of snakebite victims, especially those resulting from krait species. The present case series provides a comprehensive clinical assessment of krait bite patients ( three male patients) in the Emergency Department (ED), emphasising the distinct clinical implications, cutting-edge perspectives, and critical requirements for reporting such occurrences. To identify both shared traits and unique attributes among the cases, authors analysed clinical records, laboratory data, treatment methods, and outcomes. Within the case series, three patients exhibited diverse envenomation symptoms. Notably, discrepancies were observed in the timing and severity of conventional neurotoxic indicators. Additionally, some individuals showed unusual coagulopathic symptoms, which posed challenges in diagnosis and treatment decisions. It is noteworthy that one patient demonstrated resistance to traditional antivenom therapy, raising the possibility of the need for individualised treatment plans. The wide range of clinical manifestations emphasises the importance of individualised care strategies and thorough surveillance. By illustrating the diverse clinical course of krait envenomation and the challenges it presents to healthcare professionals, present case series contributes to the current body of knowledge. Recent studies have found correlations between the shape of snake teeth/fangs and diet. These studies were done at a very broad phylogenetic scale, making it desirable to test if correlations are still detectable at a narrower evolutionary scale, specifically within the family Elapidae. To this end, we studied fang shape in a dense selection of elapids representing most genera worldwide (74%). We used three-dimensional geometric morphometrics to analyse fang diversity and evaluate possible correlations between fang shape, fang size, and diet. We detected weak phylogenetic signal for both shape and absolute fang size, and found that evolutionary allometry contributes a small proportion of the among-species variation. The distribution of elapid fangs in morphospace was found to be surprisingly conservative, with only a few outliers. The only three dietary categories that were found to have a significant effect on fang shape are mammals, lizards, and reptile eggs, with mammals having a significant effect also on absolute but not relative fang size. Our results show that there are disparate patterns in fang-diet relationships at different evolutionary scales. Across all venomous snakes, previous work found that fangs are strongly influenced by diet, but within elapids our study shows these same associations are weaker and often non-significant. This could result from limitations in these types of studies, or could reflect the fact that elapids are a relatively young clade, where recent extensive divergences in diet have yet to be mirrored in fang shape, suggesting a lag between changes in ecology and dental morphology. Snakebite is one of the most common complaints related to wilderness medicine. Venomous snakebite manifestation is divided into local and systemic envenomation. For the Elapidae group, the most feared complication is respiratory muscle paralysis due to neurotransmitter malfunction at the neuromuscular junction level which leads to respiratory insufficiency. However, there is a lack of evidence or case report incidence to suggest that it can potentially associate with the development of stroke disorder. We present a rare case of massive posterior circulation infarct in a middle-aged gentleman following a cobra bite. He was brought to our center few hours later following the bite and antivenom was administered. He improved shortly after receiving it. However, he had an abrupt drop in his conscious level several hours later. Noncontrast-enhanced computed tomography (NCCT) brain was performed immediately, but stroke disorder was excluded prematurely. Repeated NCCT imaging which was done 12 h apart showed massive posterior circulation infarction with hydrocephalus. He succumbed to death 3 days later. Given its rarity, the evolution of his clinical condition warrants clinician's early suspicion of potential stroke-related complications that can occur following a cobra bite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Invasive plants are a threat to natural ecosystems worldwide, with urban wetlands being some of the most susceptible and highly modified environments of all. The tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) is a top predator that persists in urban wetlands of south-western Australia, many of which have been degraded by introduced kikuyu grass (Cenchrus clandestinus). To evaluate the potential impact of kikuyu grass on habitat quality for tiger snakes we quantified the structural features of habitats within wetlands degraded by kikuyu grass and compared them to wetlands with native vegetation. We also examined tiger snake prey availability, assessed predation risk for juvenile snakes using clay models, and measured the thermal quality of the vegetation. Proliferation of kikuyu grass has reduced habitat structural heterogeneity by reducing available bare ground and increasing vegetation density. This homogenisation of habitat structure had little effect on the predation risk for juveniles or the thermal properties of tiger snake shelter sites; however, one key prey species, the motorbike frog, had significantly lower abundance in the most impacted habitat. Habitat types with more structural complexity also offered tiger snakes more stable thermal regimes and lower predation risk. These findings indicate that the current extent of kikuyu grass invasion offers overall similar habitat quality for tiger snakes to native vegetation and may contribute to their persistence in urban wetlands; however, both tiger snakes and their anuran prey may benefit from increased habitat structural complexity. Micrurus apiatus es una serpiente de coral poco conocida que se distribuye desde el este del Istmo de Tehuantepec, México hasta el oeste de Honduras, incluyendo la Península de Yucatán. Describimos su dieta, variación morfológica y patrones de actividad basados en datos de 107 especímenes de museos provenientes de los estados de Campeche, Quintana Roo y Yucatán, así como datos publicados. Su dieta consiste principalmente de otras serpientes, no fueron encontradas preferencias en el tipo de presa entre sexos, edades o estaciones; su alimentación ocurre a lo largo del año, observándose un ligero aumento en la temporada de lluvias. Agregamos ocho presas nuevas, incluyendo a Adelphicos visoninum, que representa un nuevo registro geográfico para Campeche, y sugerimos una dieta homogénea entre clases de edad, sexos y estaciones. Micrurus apiatus presenta dimorfismo sexual en longitud hocico-cloaca, longitud total, largo de la cabeza, escamas ventrales (mayor en hembras), longitud de cola y escamas subcaudales (mayor en machos). Micrurus apiatus mostró actividad durante todo el año, con un patrón de actividad aparentemente bimodal, con un pico de actividad a fines del invierno y primavera y el otro pico a mediados de verano y otoño. El momento de los eventos reproductivos de M. apiatus es similar al de otras serpientes de coral con patrón de color de anillos negros dispuestos en mónadas. Estudios adicionales sobre esta especie y otras relacionadas aumentará nuestra comprensión sobre cómo su ecología difiere de aquellas especies con un patrón de anillos negros dispuestos en tríadas y bicolores.

The transition from terrestrial to aquatic life by hydrophiine elapid snakes modified targets of natural selection and likely affected sexual selection also. Thus, the shift to marine life also might have affected sexual dimorphism. Our measurements of 419 preserved specimens of six species of aipysurine snakes (genera Emydocephalus and Aipysurus) revealed sexual dimorphism in mean adult snout–vent length (SVL), body width relative to SVL, lengths and widths of heads and tails relative to SVL, and eye diameter relative to head length. Females averaged larger than males in all taxa, and generally were wider-bodied with shorter and wider tails and smaller eyes. For other traits, sexual dimorphism varied among species: for example, relative head length ranged from male-biased to female-biased, and head shape (width relative to length) was highly dimorphic only in A. laevis. The transition to marine life may have eliminated male–male combat (reducing selection for large males) and favoured visual rather than pheromone-based mate-searching (favouring larger eyes in males). Variation in head-size dimorphism may reflect intersexual niche partitioning, with different taxa following different trajectories. Repeated evolutionary transitions from terrestrial to aquatic life in snakes provide a powerful opportunity to explore selective forces on sexually dimorphic traits.

Evolutionary shifts from one habitat type to another can clarify selective forces that affect life-history attributes. Four lineages of snakes (acrochordids and three clades within the Elapidae) have invaded marine habitats, and all have larger offspring than do terrestrial snakes. Predation by fishes on small neonates offers a plausible selective mechanism for that shift, because ascending to breathe at the ocean surface exposes a marine snake to midwater predation whereas juvenile snakes in terrestrial habitats can remain hidden. Consistent with this hypothesis, snake-shaped models moving through a coral-reef habitat in New Caledonia attracted high rates of attack by predatory fishes, and small models (the size of neonatal terrestrial snakes) were attacked more frequently than were large models (the size of neonatal sea snakes). Vulnerability to predatory fishes may have imposed strong selection for increased offspring size in marine snakes.

Abstract Identifying risk areas for envenomation by animals is relevant for public health, such as strategic distribution of antivenoms. Coral snakes are highly diverse in the Amazon, inhabit natural and human-modified environments, and the outcome of the cases tends to be serious and potentially lethal due to their neurotoxic venom. By integrating species’ geographical records and environmental variables, we used species distribution modeling to predict the distribution of coral snake species in the Brazilian Amazonia. We analyzed the relationship between the predicted distribution of coral snake species, along with envenomation data in the region, to propose actions to reduce the number of cases and to provide tools for a better policy of public health. We conclude that the entire Amazon shows high environmental suitability for coral snakes, and such suitability explains little about the incidence of cases. This is probably due to the low human density in the Amazon and to coral snake traits such as secretive habits and non-agressive behavior. Differently from other venomous snakes, the scenario regarding coral snakebites precludes the detection of prominent geographical areas of concern and demands a broad and equitable availability of health centers throughout Amazonia and along other areas of occurrence of the genus Micrurus.

Abstract Snakebite envenoming is a major global health problem that kills or disables half a million people in the world’s poorest countries. Identifying the biting snake and its habitat use is key to understanding snakebite eco-epidemiology and optimizing its clinical management. To prevent and combat the neglected snakebite disease, we characterize the morphology, geographic distribution, habitat use, and snakebites of medically important venomous snakes in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Despite Philodryas spp. not being considered of medical importance by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, we also explore their data once the bites may require medical intervention, may cause death, and their consequences are underestimated. Methods: We assessed taxonomy and geographic data from specimens housed in scientific collections, the literature, and the Notifiable Diseases Information System. Our data revealed fragility in the morphological characters recommended to distinguish Bothrops jararaca from B. jararacussu, identify the subspecies of Crotalus durissus and distinguish the species of Philodryas. To help identify these species, we present an identification key to the venomous snake species from Rio de Janeiro based on the morphological data collected. We record the genera Bothrops and Micrurus in all mesoregions of the state. Here, we provide the first record of C. durissus in the Serrana region, supporting the hypothesis of geographic expansion of the species in the state. The crotalic antivenom must not be missing in Médio Paraíba, Centro-Sul Fluminense, and Serrana, where the rattlesnake C. durissus occurs. Bothrops bilineatus and Lachesis muta have historical records presented for the first time herein. However, these species are likely endangered or extinct in the state. There were 7,483 snakebites reported between 2001 and 2019, with an annual average of 393.8 cases. The Bothrops genus is responsible for the majority of accidents. The highest number of cases occurred in the Serrana region, the largest pole of family agriculture in Rio de Janeiro. We improve the identification of venomous snake species, better delimit their distribution, and update the number of cases of snakebites, thus providing greater precision in the attention to this problem in Rio de Janeiro. We emphasize the importance of clinical studies to test using bothropic-crotalic antivenom and heparin in all mesoregions to treat B. jararacussu envenomation; and mechanical ventilation, atropine, and anticholinesterases in the emergency health centers in the Metropolitana and Norte Fluminense regions due to the occurrence of the coral M. lemniscatus in these areas.

Objective: We attempted to study the complications of snake bites so that early recognition and institution of proper treatment can save the lives of many children. Methods: This Hospital based prospective observational study was conducted in Srirama Chandra Bhanj Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack from December 2020 to November 2022 among children aged 1-14 years with a history of snake bites admitted to our ward, through the outpatient department and emergency department. Results: Our study showed, that snake bite cases were predominantly seen in 8 -11 years of age with a male: female ratio of 2.9:1, as these age group children are actively engaged in outdoor games like playing near riverside and bushy areas in playgrounds. Acute markers as depicted by serum LDH, D-Dimer, Fibrinogen, and Ferritin were significantly high among haematotoxic cases due to secondary infection and correlated with cellulitis and necrotic ulcers which accounted for 57.1%. Conclusion: Healthcare providers should be made aware that a history of circumstantial evidence such as sleeping on the floor at night with sudden onset of pain abdomen, vomiting, and inability to keep the eyes open should prompt neurotoxic snake bite and ASV as well as Atropine, Neostigmine should be started. The red-bellied black snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) is a member of the Elapidae family and is distributed on the east coast of Australia. The species is known to feed on a variety of ectothermic prey, including frogs and lizards. It is also known to be ophiophagous (snake-feeding), and stomach-content analyses suggest that P. porphyriacus also exhibits cannibalistic behavior, yet this extreme case of ophiophagy has rarely been documented. Marine environments show strong cycles at daily (tidal), monthly (lunar) and seasonal timeframes, and the behavioural responses of marine organisms to such cycles may depend upon ecological and behavioural traits that differ between the sexes. Underwater observations of free-ranging olive sea snakes (Aipysurus laevis, Hydrophiinae, Elapidae) at a site on the southern Great Barrier Reef revealed sex-based divergences in the effects of abiotic cycles on snake activity. Female snakes were active primarily on high and rising tides that allowed access to shallow-water sites for foraging. In contrast, male snakes were active primarily on low and falling tides, especially near the time of the full moon (when tidal range is highest), conditions that may restrict a female snake's ability to evade a courting male. Males were common on the coral-reef site during winter (the mating season), but were rarely seen during summer, whereas females remained on the reef year-round. Repeated island colonisation by Australian tiger snakes (Notechis scutatus) has become a model system demonstrating how prey size on islands influences a snake's body and jaw size. Tiger snakes on islands with large prey have relatively longer jaws compared to their mainland counterparts, due to diet-induced phenotypic plasticity followed by assimilation of favourable traits. We present the first examination of the effects of diet on all skull elements that are involved in feeding, by analysing shape and size differences using CT imaging and a combination of linear measurements and three dimensional geometric morphometrics. We compared two populations of tiger snakes, one from Carnac Island, where the snakes were first introduced approximately 100 years ago, and another from Herdsman Lake on the mainland (a putative source population). Each population was divided into two groups, one was fed small prey and the other large prey. While snakes from the island exhibited relatively longer trophic bones at birth, they also had slightly slower growth rates for these elements regardless of diet. The island forms showed diet-induced plasticity within specific trophic elements, the mandible and palatopterygoid, which grew longer when the snakes were fed larger prey. Importantly, skull plasticity was expressed only after prolonged dietary stress, and was not clearly observable until the snakes approached adulthood. We hypothesize that this plastic response resulting in increased gape may be adaptive, allowing ingestion of large prey items available to adult tiger snakes on Carnac Island. Envenomation by snakes in Elapidae and Viperidae families have been associated with respiratory failure in dogs and cats. Mechanical ventilation may be required for hypoventilation due to neuromuscular paralysis or hypoxemia due to pulmonary hemorrhage or aspiration pneumonia. Median incidence of dogs and cats with snake envenomation that require mechanical ventilation is 13% (0.06–40%). Standard treatment of snake envenomation in dogs and cats includes prompt administration of appropriate antivenom and management of envenomation complications such as coagulopathy, rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney injury. When mechanical ventilation is required, overall prognosis is good with appropriate treatment. Standard anesthetic protocols and mechanical ventilator settings are generally appropriate, with lung protective ventilation strategies typically reserved for patients with pulmonary disease. Median survival to discharge for cats and dogs with elapid envenomation is 72% (76–84%) with 33 h (19.5–58 h) median duration of mechanical ventilation and 140 h (84–196 h) median hospitalization. This article reviews indications for mechanical ventilation in cats and dogs with snake envenomation, and discusses ventilator settings, anesthetic and nursing considerations, complications and outcomes specific to this disease.

The first survey of sea snakes (Elapidae, Hydrophiinae) at the remote Entrecasteaux atolls, Coral Sea, was conducted using remote unbaited 360° video cameras (RUV360), in 2021. We detected 49 snakes belonging to at least six species (Aipysurus duboisii, A. laevis, Hydrophis coggeri, H. macdowelli, H. major and H. ornatus) at the two largest atolls, Surprise and Huon. Three more are probably present (Emydocephalus annulatus, H. peronii, H. platurus), highlighting the richness of these atolls. No snakes were detected at neighboring smaller atolls. The lack of sea snake observations at the five small atolls may be due to the insufficient area of suitable habitat. Compared to assemblages sampled using the same method in New Caledonia (at Nouméa = A. laevis, E. annulatus, Laticauda sp., H. macdowelli, H. major, H. ornatus; at Touho = A. laevis, H. ornatus), and assemblages sampled with different methods at the Chesterfields (A. duboisii, A. laevis, E. annulatus, H. coggeri, H. laboutei, H. peronii, H. platurus), the Entrecasteaux atolls exhibit a high sea snake species richness. RUV360s appear to sample the diversity of sea snakes more effectively than did baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS) within the Great Barrier Reef (which detected only A. laevis, H. curtus, H. ocellatus). The evolution of bright 'warning' colours in nontoxic animals often is attributed to mimicry of toxic species, but empirical tests of that hypothesis must overcome the logistical challenge of quantifying differential rates of predation in nature. Populations of a harmless sea snake species (Emydocephalus annulatus) in New Caledonia exhibit colour polymorphism, with around 20% of individuals banded rather than melanic. Stability in that proportion over 20 years has been attributed to Batesian mimicry of deadly snake species by banded morphs of the harmless taxon. This hypothesis requires that banded colours reduce a snake's vulnerability to predation. We tested that idea by pulling flexible snake-shaped models through the water and recording responses by predatory fish. Black and banded lures attracted similar numbers of following fish, but attacks were directed almost exclusively to black lures. Our methods overcome several ambiguities associated with experimental studies on mimicry in terrestrial snakes and support the hypothesis that banded colour patterns reduce a non-venomous marine snake's vulnerability to predation. Snakebite is a significant health concern in Africa, particularly due to neurotoxic envenomation which can lead to neuromuscular paralysis and respiratory failure. In Nigeria, snakes from the Elapidae family are a notable cause of envenomation cases, though these incidents are underreported. This review examined case reports of neurotoxic envenomation in Africa, highlighting the clinical impacts and the efficacy of available antivenoms. Preclinical studies showed that the polyvalent antivenom from the South African Institute for Medical Research (SAIMR) was highly effective against neurotoxicity with a protective efficacy (R) of 1346.80 mg/mL, while clinical assessment emphasized the need for high-dose antivenom therapy along with supportive measures like mechanical ventilation. Unlike hemorrhagic envenomation, where antivenom promptly resolves bleeding, neurotoxic cases often require additional interventions. The review underscores the necessity for tailored approaches in antivenom therapy to address the complexities of neurotoxic snakebites and reduce their public health burden in Africa. There is an unmet need for economical snakebite therapies with long shelf lives that are effective even with delays in treatment. The orally bioavailable, heat-stable, secretory phospholipase A₂ (sPLA₂) inhibitor, LY333013, demonstrates antidotal characteristics for severe snakebite envenoming in both field and hospital use. A murine model of lethal envenoming by a Papuan taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus) demonstrates that LY333013, even with delayed oral administration, improves the chances of survival. Furthermore, LY333013 improves the performance of antivenom even after it no longer reverses neurotoxic signs. Our study is the first demonstration that neurotoxicity from presynaptic venom sPLA2S can be treated successfully, even after the window of therapeutic antivenom has closed. These results suggest that sPLA₂ inhibitors have the potential to reduce death and disability and should be considered for the initial and adjunct treatment of snakebite envenoming. The scope and capacity of the sPLA2 inhibitors ability to achieve these endpoints requires further investigation and development efforts.

Sinomicrurus peinani is a new species of the genus Sinomicrurus (Serpentes: Elapidae) from China and Vietnam in 2020. In this study, we successfully sequenced mitochondrial genome of an individual S. peinani. The complete mitochondrial genome of S. peinani is a circular molecule with the entire length of 19,477 bp. The base composition is T (28.1%), G (11.9%), and GC (38.5%), which contains two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, 13 protein-coding genes, one origin of replication gene (D-loop), and two non-coding control regions, an origin of light-strand replication, and a 2346 bp non-coding region between tRNA-N and tRNA-Y. A maximum-likelihood (ML) tree of S. peinani and 13 other related species was constructed. The DNA data presented here will be useful to study the evolutionary relationships and genetic diversity of S. peinani.

Introduction: Snakebite is recognised as a neglected tropical disease and a cause of substantial morbidity and mortality. Whilst the most medically important snakes are typically native of Asia, Africa, Latin America and Oceania, the possibility of encountering these snakes is no longer limited by geography due to an increasing number of exotic (non-native) snakes being held in captivity. Methods: A retrospective review of snakebite enquiries to the UK National Poisons Information Service (NPIS) between 2009 and 2020. Enquiries about the European adder (Vipera berus) or where the identity of the snake was unknown were excluded. Results: There were 321 exotic snakebites in 300 patients involving 68 different species during this period. Ten patients were bitten on more than one occasion. The majority of patients (64.5%) were male. Most bites were inflicted by snakes of the family Colubridae (184/321, 57.3%); seventeen bites resulted in moderate symptoms (predominantly swelling of the bitten limb). There were 30 (9.3%) bites by Viperidae and 14 (4.3%) bites by Elapidae. All severe cases (n = 15) resulted from bites by either Viperidae (n = 10) or Elapidae (n = 5). Antivenom was given in 17 cases. One fatality was recorded. Conclusions: Despite their low incidence, exotic snakebites present a substantial challenge for UK healthcare professionals. Although rare, these bites typically occur in individuals (usually male) who keep snakes as part of their occupation or hobby and are therefore at risk of multiple bites. Bites can result in venom hypersensitisation and the risk of venom-induced anaphylaxis. Rapid access to expert clinical advice is available in the UK on a 24-hour basis through the National Poisons Information Service and is strongly recommended in all cases of exotic snakebite. Feeding observations in free-ranging nocturnal snakes are rare, primarily due to their cryptic behaviour and activity patterns. We describe a feeding observation in a free-ranging Grey Snake Hemiaspis damelii in the Murrumbidgee catchment, southern NSW. Hemiaspis damelii is an anurophagous (frog-eating) specialist, yet the feeding ecology and prey of H. damelii in southern NSW is unknown. Our observations provide the first recorded prey items from the southern parts of its range and highlight a potential feeding strategy used by small anurophagous elapids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The eastern small eyed snake (Cryptophis nigrescens; CN) is an uncommon cause of snakebite in Australia despite the widespread distribution of the snake along the east coast of Australia. Diagnosis of envenomation relies on identification of the snake which is often not possible with animal snakebite cases. This study examined the immunoreactivity profile of CN venom towards specific rabbit IgG made against the medically relevant snake venom immunotypes found in Australia (tiger, brown, black, death adder and taipan). A simultaneous sandwich ELISA format was used to quantify CN venom binding to venom specific Protein A purified rabbit IgG. The binding profiles demonstrated weak binding of CN venom to rabbit IgG made against both tiger (N. scutatus) and black snake (P. australis) venoms with approximately 0.19% and 0.069% cross reactivity, respectively. However, the concentration of venom likely to be present in the urine of CN envenomed patients and the low cross reactivity suggest that envenomed veterinary patients are unlikely to be detected in the commercial snake venom detection kit. It is possible that CN envenomation is more common but may be underdiagnosed where snake venom antigen detection is relied upon solely. Serum biochemical abnormalities also overlap with other snake species found in the same geographical area. In respect of antivenom therapy, administration of tiger snake antivenom is supported by the binding data, but due to the low cross reactivity multiple vials may be required. This study reports OCP and PAH concentrations in the tissues of stranded sea snakes from Sharjah, UAE. Samples from 10 Hydrophis lapemoides, 2 Hydrophis ornatus and 1 Hydrophis curtus were analyzed. Muscle, liver and fat tissues were extracted using micro-QuEChERs, followed by d-SPE and analyzed using GC/MS. Higher concentrations of OCPs were detected, while PAHs were more frequently detected. Significant correlations suggest that OCPs and PAHs do bioaccumulate in the tissues of sea snakes. Additionally, OCPs with lower log Kow (octanol-water partition coefficient) values were mainly detected in the muscle samples of H. lapemoides, whereas OCPs with higher log Kow values were more commonly present in the liver and fat samples. The venoms of Australasian elapid snakes are known to possess coagulant activity, including some with strong procoagulant activity and others with anticoagulant activity, although the latter are less well known. This study investigates the anticoagulant activity of Australasian elapid snake venoms, and whether this activity is neutralised by commercial snake antivenom and varespladib (PLA 2 inhibiting agent). Clotting assays were completed for 34 species of Australasian elapids. Antivenom neutralisation assays with tiger snake antivenom (TSAV) were performed on five species to determine if there was cross-neutralisation. Varespladib neutralisation assays were also completed for the same five species. All Pseudechis species venoms had anticoagulant activity, except P. porphyriacus, which was procoagulant. Pseudechis species venoms had similar anticoagulant potency ranging from the most potent P. colletti venom to the least potent P. butleri venom. The three Austrelaps (copperhead) species venoms were the next most potent anticoagulants. Six further snakes, Elapognathus coronatus, Acanthophis pyrrhus, A. antarcticus, Suta suta, Denisonia devisi and D. maculata, had weaker anticoagulant activity, except for D. maculata which had similar anticoagulant activity to Pseudechis species. Tiger Snake Antivenom (1200mU/mL) neutralised the anticoagulant effect of P. australis for concentrations up to 1 mg/mL. TSAV (1200mU/mL) also neutralised P. colletti, D. maculata, A. superbus and A. pyrrhus venoms at their EC 50 , demonstrating cross neutralisation. Varespladib neutralised the anticoagulant effect of P. australis venom at 5 μM and for venoms of P. colletti, D. maculata, A. superbus and A. pyrrhus. We found anticoagulant activity to be present in six genera of Australasian snakes at low concentrations, which can be completely neutralised by both antivenom and varespladib. Estimation of evolutionary relationships among lineages that rapidly diversified can be challenging, and, in such instances, inaccurate or unresolved phylogenetic estimates can lead to erroneous conclusions regarding historical geographical ranges of lineages. One example underscoring this issue has been the historical challenge posed by untangling the biogeographic origin of elapoid snakes, which includes numerous dangerously venomous species as well as species not known to be dangerous to humans. The worldwide distribution of this lineage makes it an ideal group for testing hypotheses related to historical faunal exchanges among the many continents and other landmasses occupied by contemporary elapoid species. We developed a novel suite of genomic resources, included worldwide sampling, and inferred a robust estimate of evolutionary relationships, which we leveraged to quantitatively estimate geographical range evolution through the deep-time history of this remarkable radiation. This report details the case of a 51-year-old man with a Tiger snake bite who developed systemic envenomation, coagulopathy and thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) requiring renal replacement therapy. He received plasma exchange as additional therapy while awaiting confirmation of the cause of the TMA. We discuss clinical decision making in detection of systemic envenomation and management of the rare complication of TMA, as well as current Australian guidelines around antivenom administration. Investigating snake venom is necessary for developing new treatments for envenoming and harnessing the therapeutic potential that lies within venom toxins. Despite considerable efforts in previous research, several technical challenges remain for characterizing the individual components within such complex mixtures. Here, we present native and top-down mass spectrometry (MS) workflows that enable the analysis of individual venom proteins within complex mixtures and showcase the utility of these methodologies on King cobra ( Ophiophagus hannah ) venom. First, we coupled ion mobility spectrometry for separation and electron capture dissociation for charge reduction to resolve highly convoluted mass spectra containing multiple proteins with masses ranging from 55 to 127 kDa. Next, we performed a top-down glycomic analysis of a 25.5 kDa toxin, showing that this protein contains a fucosylated complex glycan. Finally, temperature-controlled nanoelectrospray mass spectrometry facilitated the top-down sequence analysis of a β-cardiotoxin, which cannot be fragmented by collisional energy due to its disulfide bond pattern. The work presented here demonstrates the applicability of new and promising MS methods for snake venom analysis.

Candida auris represents one of the most urgent threats to public health, although its ecology remains largely unknown. Because amphibians and reptiles may present favorable conditions for C. auris colonization, cloacal and blood samples (n = 68), from several snake species, were cultured and molecularly screened for C. auris using molecular amplification of glycosylphosphatidylinositol protein-encoding genes and ribosomal internal transcribed spacer sequencing. Candida auris was isolated from the cloacal swab of one Egyptian cobra (Naja haje legionis) and molecularly identified in its cloaca and blood. The isolation of C. auris from wild animals is herein reported for the first time, thus suggesting the role that these animals could play as reservoirs of this emerging pathogen. The occurrence of C. auris in blood requires further investigation, although the presence of cationic antimicrobial peptides in the plasma of reptiles could play a role in reducing the vitality of the fungus., (© The Author(s) 2024. Venom is a dynamic trait that has contributed to the success of numerous organismal lineages. Predominantly composed of proteins, these complex cocktails are deployed for predation and/or self-defence. Many non-toxic physiological proteins have been convergently and recurrently recruited by venomous animals into their toxin arsenal. Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) is one such protein and features in the venoms of many organisms across the animal kingdom, including snakes of the families Elapidae and Viperidae. Understanding the evolutionary history of this superfamily would therefore provide insight into the origin and diversification of venom toxins and the evolution of novelty more broadly. The literature is replete with studies that have identified diversifying selection as the sole influence on PLA2 evolution. However, these studies have largely neglected the structural/functional constraints on PLA2s, and the ecology and evolutionary histories of the diverse snake lineages that produce them. By considering these crucial factors and employing evolutionary analyses integrated with a schema for the classification of PLA2s, we uncovered lineage-specific differences in selection regimes. Thus, our work provides novel insights into the evolution of this major snake venom toxin superfamily and underscores the importance of considering the influence of evolutionary and ecological contexts on molecular evolution. Coral snakes in the genus Micrurus are venomous, aposematic organisms that signal danger to predators through vivid coloration. Previous studies found that they serve as models to several harmless species of Batesian mimics. However, the extent to which Micrurus species engage in Müllerian mimicry remains poorly understood. We integrate detailed morphological and geographical distribution data to investigate if coral snakes are Müllerian mimics. We found that coloration is spatially structured and that Micrurus species tend to be more similar where they co-occur. Though long supposed, we demonstrate for the first time that coral snakes might indeed be Müllerian mimics as they show some convergence in coloration patterns. Additionally, we found that the length of red-coloured rings in Micrurus is conserved, even at large geographic scales. This finding suggests that bright red rings may be under more substantial stabilizing selection than other aspects of coloration and probably function as a generalized signal for deterring predators. The rinkhals (Hemachatus haemachatus) is a well-known venomous elapid found in greater South Africa and the eastern highlands of Zimbabwe. To evaluate its current-day (mostly 2012–2021) distribution in central South Africa and Lesotho, we examined various media sources, including Facebook, for photographic and videographic records. Records were posted or shared to a Facebook group Free State Reptiles and Amphibians (including adjacent areas and Lesotho) and saved electronically for future reference. In total we accumulated 208 Facebook records for 152 unique localities. Several localities were vague or broad, and therefore most of the original submitters of records were contacted in an attempt to confirm or refine them. Of the 139 individuals contacted, 68 (49%) responded regarding 96 records and they either confirmed the given locality names, could not add to the information, or refined them. In total, 131 (63%) of the 208 Facebook records were confirmed/verified and were thus usable for plotting on maps. The 131 records represent 86% of all verified media records, whereas only 14% (21 records) are from platforms such as iNaturalist, iSpot and ReptileMAP. All verified media records, together with literature and unpublished museum records, were plotted on a map. Our evaluation, based on verified records, showed that the rinkhals still occurs widely in the northern, central and eastern Free State Province, and several new records extend its known range westwards in central South Africa. New records indicate that it still occurs in western Lesotho, as well as the Maluti Mountains in the north of this country. Our study is the first to make extensive use of Facebook records for evaluating the distribution of a southern African reptile. We contend that a large body of photographic and videographic records for reptiles and amphibians exists on social networking sites, such as Facebook, and proper evaluation and documentation of these records can contribute significantly to knowledge of present-day species distributions. Abstract Research on interactions between humans and deadly snakes has focused on situations that result in high rates of snakebite; but we can also learn from cases where snakes and people coexist peacefully. For example, coastal bays near Noumea, in the Pacific archipelago of New Caledonia, are used by thousands of tourists and snakes, but bites are rare. Our long‐term studies clarify reasons for this coexistence. Although 97% of snakes encountered in standardised snorkel surveys were a harmless species Emydocephalus annulatus, we recorded dangerously venomous taxa often enough (one snake per 8 hr snorkelling) that we would expect many risky human–snake interactions in these crowded bays. However, the risk is reduced by low overlap between humans and snakes in the timing of activity, both seasonally and on the diel cycle. Mate‐searching male snakes, the group most likely to approach divers, enter the bays only in cooler months of the year when few beach users are present. Also, snakes tend to be active by night, whereas people are not. Risk is further reduced by spatial divergence: bare‐footed beach users stay in sandy areas rather than the adjacent coral‐reef areas that are preferred by snakes. The response of snakes to disturbance is also important: most sea snakes are reluctant to bite even when harassed. Water currents frequently push sea snakes against hard objects, perhaps explaining why the snakes do not interpret brief contact with a human as an attack. The ability of snakes to flee is increased by uniformly high body temperature, and a complex three‐dimensional aquatic environment. Thus, the danger of snakebite for recreational users of these popular beaches is reduced by aspects of human and snake behaviour that (a) decrease encounter rates and (b) render snakes unlikely to bite even if contacted. The risk to snakes is also reduced because snakes are more difficult to detect and kill underwater than on land. As a result, thousands of snakes and people coexist harmoniously within these small bays.

In the present study, we investigated the cardiotoxic potential of Micrurus frontalis venom. Twelve guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) were distributed in two groups (n = 6), named control and envenomed. Control groups received 0.2 ml of PBS/BSA, while envenomed group received 0.2 ml of the same solution containing 450 µg/kg of M. frontalis venom. Both were intramuscular injections. Electrocardiography, echocardiogram, blood count, and serum biochemistry were performed before and 2 h after inoculation. Necropsy was performed, and histological and ultrastructural analysis of the heart were conducted. First clinical signs were presented as early as 18 min after venom inoculation. All poisoned animals presented flaccid paralysis of both hind and forelimbs, followed by fasciculations and respiratory arrythmia. However, the animals did not die in the first 2 h of poisoning. ECG of the poisoned animals revealed severe ventricular arrythmias, corroborated by reduction of both ejection and shortening fractions, increase in CK, CK-MB, troponin, cardiomyocyte degeneration, fragmentation and mitochondrial damage. M. frontalis venom causes severe heart damage, eliciting both morphological and arrhythmogenic effects after only 2 h of envenomation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
