Este texto apresenta parte dos resultados da pesquisa intitulada “50 anos do CAU-UFRN: emergência e evolução da pesquisa na área de Projeto e seus rebatimentos no ensino”, que objetivou documentar e analisar o processo de introdução da investigação científica neste campo no âmbito do Departamento de Arquitetura e do Curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte e sua evolução ao longo dos anos. A investigação levantou, em um primeiro momento, os projetos de pesquisa coordenados por professores da área de Projeto, observando temas, objetos de estudos, abordagens teóricas e métodos empregados, assim como as contribuições para o ensino de graduação e de pós-graduação e para a produção de conhecimentos científicos nessa área. Em um segundo momento, foram levantados os projetos de concurso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo que obtiveram premiação ou menção honrosa, envolvendo estudantes e professores do curso. O período observado, dos anos 2000 até os dias atuais, coincide com o início da pós-graduação, a criação do Laboratório de Projetos Integrados (LAPIs) e do Grupo de Pesquisa Projetar, fatores fortemente associados. Quanto às pesquisas, os resultados evidenciam a diversidade temática, de abordagens e métodos empregados indicando a transversalidade da pesquisa neste campo e seu diálogo com outras áreas de conhecimentos, além de uma significativa produção científica dos pesquisadores envolvidos, o que também inclui estudantes de graduação e de pós-graduação. Quanto aos projetos de concurso, as premiações e menções honrosas recebidas são indicativos da qualidade do ensino, da pesquisa e da extensão realizados neste curso.

Abstract Glial scar formation represents a fundamental response to central nervous system (CNS) injuries. It is mainly characterized by a well-defined spatial rearrangement of reactive astrocytes and microglia. The mechanisms underlying glial scar formation have been extensively studied, yet quantitative descriptors of the spatial arrangement of reactive glial cells remain limited. Here, we present a novel approach using point pattern analysis (PPA) and topological data analysis (TDA) to quantify spatial patterns of reactive glial cells after experimental ischemic stroke in mice. We provide open and reproducible tools using R and Julia to quantify spatial intensity, cell covariance and conditional distribution, cell-to-cell interactions, and short/long-scale arrangement, which collectively disentangle the arrangement patterns of the glial scar. This approach unravels a substantial divergence in the distribution of GFAP+ and IBA1+ cells after injury that conventional analysis methods cannot fully characterize. PPA and TDA are valuable tools for studying the complex spatial arrangement of reactive glia and other nervous cells following CNS injuries and have potential applications for evaluating glial-targeted restorative therapies.

A presença de elementos naturais em ambientes escolares tem se tornado cada vez mais escassa, especialmente nas grandes cidades. Esta é uma questão preocupante, dado que a natureza pode proporcionar ambiências pedagógicas voltadas para o bem-estar, cuidado ambiental e aprendizagem significativa dos estudantes. Diante disso, foram conduzidos mapeamentos para analisar a presença da natureza em escolas do ensino básico. A proposta incluiu croquis para visualização da distribuição dos elementos naturais na estrutura física da escola e a elaboração de uma fórmula matemática que calcula o nível de natureza nela disponível. Os procedimentos permitiram a construção de uma ferramenta de avaliação objetiva dos ambientes escolares e suas áreas verdes, possibilitando um diálogo mais efetivo com as escolas sobre o tema. Estas diretrizes destinam-se ao uso em pesquisas conduzidas por estudiosos da Psicologia Ambiental e áreas afins. Concluindo, esta proposta pode contribuir para o desenvolvimento de indivíduos e escolas mais sustentáveis.

Background: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a reliable procedure commonly performed in older patients with degenerative diseases of the cervical spine. Over 130,000 procedures are performed every year with an annual increase of 5%, and overall morbidity rates can reach as high as 19.3%, indicating a need for surgeons to gauge their patients’ risk for adverse outcomes. Frailty is an age-associated decline in functioning of multiple organ systems and has been shown to predict adverse outcomes following various spine procedures. There have been several proposed frailty indices of various factors including the 11-factor modified frailty index (mFI-11), which has been shown to be an effective tool for predicting complications in patients undergoing ACDF. However, there is a paucity of literature assessing the utility of the 5-factor modified frailty index (mFI-5) as a risk stratification tool for patients undergoing ACDF. The purpose of this study was to analyze the predictive capability of the mFI-5 score for 30-day postoperative adverse events following elective ACDF. Methods: A retrospective review was performed using the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database from 2010 through 2019. Patients older than 50 years of age who underwent elective ACDF were identified using Current Procedural Terminology ([CPT] codes 22554, 22551, 22552, and 63075). Exclusion criteria removed patients under the age of 51, as well as those with fractures, sepsis, disseminated cancer, a prior operation in the last 30 days, ascites, wound infection, or an emergency surgery. Patients were grouped using mFI scores of 1, 2, and 3+. Univariate analysis, using chi-squared and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests, was conducted to compare demographics, comorbidities, and postoperative complications across the varying cohorts based on mFI-5 scores. Multivariate logistic regression, including patient demographics and preoperative comorbidities as covariates, was performed to evaluate if mFI-5 scores were independent predictors of 30-day postoperative adverse events. Covariates including race, BMI, sex, ASA, and comorbidities were included in regression models. Results: The 45,991 patients were identified and allocated in cohorts based on mFI-5 score. Rates for superficial surgical site infection (SSI), organ/deep space SSI, pneumonia, progressive renal insufficiency, acute renal failure (ARF), urinary tract infection (UTI), stroke/cardiovascular accident (CVA), cardiac arrest requiring cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), myocardial infarction, bleeding requiring transfusions, deep vein thrombosis/thrombophlebitis, sepsis, septic shock, readmissions, reoperation, and mortality incrementally increased with mFI-5 scores from 0 to 3+. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that mFI-5 scores 1 to 3+ increased the odds, in a stepwise manner, of total complications, cardiac arrest requiring CPR, pneumonia and mortality. Summary: CNS injuries are associated with profound changes in cell organization. This protocol presents a stepwise approach to quantitatively describe the spatiotemporal changes in glial cell rearrangement in the injured murine brain, which is applicable to other biological contexts. Herein, we apply common immunolabeling of neurons and glial cells and wide-field microscopy imaging. Esse artigo é derivado de uma apresentação que aconteceu durante o IVADS2023. Ele proporciona ao leitor uma visão geral de temas selecionados pela Comissão Organizadora para serem trabalhados pelos grupos participantes do workshop em seus estudos preliminares de arquitetura para ocupação da área em estudo. O texto tem origem em investigações concluídas e em andamento no Grupo Projetar/ UFRN, e seu conteúdo abrange dois conceitos ligados à criatividade enquanto objeto de estudo: economia criativa e ambiências criativas. Após apresentar tais ideias e associá-las ao projeto de arquitetura (genérico), as considerações finais fazem breve referência às propostas desenvolvidas no evento e ressaltam a importância destes assuntos como desafios a serem enfrentados no âmbito da atual práxis projetual no campo da Arquitetura e do Urbanismo.

Background: Previous work suggests that proprioceptive information from ankle and hip are crucial in maintaining balance during upright standing; however, the contribution of these proprioceptive information during stepping balance recovery in not clear. The goal of the current study was to assess the role of ankle and hip proprioceptive information on balance recovery performance by manipulating type 1a afferent in muscle spindles using vibratory stimulation. Methods: Twenty healthy young participants were recruited (age = 22.2 ± 2.7 years) and were randomly assigned to balance recovery sessions with either ankle or hip stimulation. Trip-like perturbations were imposed using a modified treadmill setup with a protecting harness. Vibratory stimulation was imposed bilaterally on ankle and hip muscles to expose participants to three condition of no-vibration, 40Hz vibration, and 80Hz vibration. Kinematics of the trunk and lower-extremities were measured using wearable sensors to characterize balance recovery performance. Outcomes were response time, recovery step length, trunk angle during toe-off and heel-strike of recovery stepping, and required time for full recovery. Bupropion is an atypical antidepressant indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and smoking cessation. It is also used off-label for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Its mechanism of action includes the selective norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI). The drug is available in immediate-release (IR), sustained-release (SR), and extended-release (XL) formulations. Common side effects are typically mild and include anxiety, insomnia, headache, dizziness, constipation, and nausea. Rarely, cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions may occur. We describe a 23-year-old man who developed severe and diffuse urticaria and angioedema 4 weeks after initiation of bupropion XL for MDD and ADHD. The bupropion was stopped, and he was treated with levocetirizine, diphenhydramine (oral and topical), and methylprednisolone with complete resolution of his symptoms within 2 weeks. Due to a good initial therapeutic response to the medication, a trial of bupropion SR was initiated. The patient again had a favorable therapeutic response without any dermatologic side effects.

Wine is often described with emotional terms, such as surprising, disappointing, or pleasant. However, very little has been done to understand the role of emotions in wine tasting and characterise this link between emotions and wine. Many studies have looked at the extrinsic factors that can improve the emotional experience of tasters when discovering a wine, but few have been carried out on the emotional impact of the organoleptic characteristics of wines. The present study aims to determine if the automatic component of emotion has a measurable output (motor and physiological) when tasting wine. If so, does wine tasting induce a concomitant activation of the different components of emotion, such as subjective feelings or physiological and motor responses? Sixty-five connoisseurs tasted seven different red Bordeaux wines with different sensory properties and quality levels pre-defined by wine experts. Emotions were measured using subjective (subjective feelings measurement using self-declarative questionnaires) and automatic (physiological measurements such as skin conductance and heart rate, or motor measurements through facial expressions) methods. The results showed that there was a measurable physiological and motor emotional output in wine tasting. The results also highlighted that changes in the autonomic nervous system in a wine-tasting situation are structured around the dimensions of pleasantness and arousal. Motor measurements taken through facial expressions showed a marginally significant difference between wines providing pleasant and unpleasant emotions for the activation intensity of action units. The relationships established between these components, as well as their concomitant activation, allow us to define wine as an emotional object.

Background: The 5-factor modified frailty index (mFI-5) has been shown to be a concise and effective tool for predicting adverse events following various spine procedures. However, there have been no studies assessing its utility in patients undergoing anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF). Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the predictive capabilities of the mFI-5 for 30-day postoperative adverse events following elective ALIF. Methods: The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database was queried from 2010 through 2019 to identify patients who underwent elective ALIF using Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes in patients over the age of 50. The mFI-5 score was calculated using variables for hypertension, congestive heart failure, comorbid diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and partially or fully dependent functional status which were each assigned 1 point. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression models were utilized to identify the associations between mFI-5 scores, and 30-day rates of overall complications, readmissions, reoperations, and mortality. Results: 11,711 patients were included (mFI-5=0: 4,026 patients, mFI-5=1: 5,392, mFI-5=2: 2,102, mFI-5=3+: 187.
