Abstract

New strategies have to be introduced for the management of agricultural and public health insects to overcome the problems associated with long-term use of synthetic insecticides. Plant-based natural products are among the possible and available alternatives to be applied for insect management. Among the plant secondary metabolites, monoterpenes have been widely studied for their applications in insect control. In this review, we focus on the studies describing the insecticidal and grain protection activities of monoterpenes against stored product insects. In addition, the biosynthesis and chemistry of monoterpenes as well as their possible modes of action and commercialization opportunities are summarized. The present review emphasizes the importance of monoterpenes as target-specific, biodegradable, environmentally safe grain protectants as well as their possible practical use as a tool in integrated pest management programs. Abstract

Frequent inspections on sorghum and maize crops during seasons of 2021 and 2022 in some regions in Bani-Suef governorate, Egypt, discovered unprecedented invasions of Spodoptera frugiperda(J. E. Smith). Accordingly, our study on Beauveria bassianaand spinetoram was supporter to the Food and Agriculture Organization’s tendency in adopting biorational insecticides against S. frugiperdain Egypt.Exposure toxicity of LC25values at 48 h of B. bassianawere 2.7 × 106and 5.2 × 106conidia mL−1and spinetoram were 0.019 and 0.048 mg L−1against the 2nd and 4th instar larvae laboratory strain of S. frugiperda, respectively. Sub-lethal effects (LC25) were accomplished on biological parameters against both instar larvae. LC25of B. bassianareduced adult emergency (89.91 and 91.05%) more than spinetoram (75.99 and 79.49%) against the 2nd and 4th instar larvae, respectively. The 2nd instar larvae exposed to LC25of B. bassianasuppressed female fecundity (0.00 eggs) more than spinetoram (19.74 eggs). Enzymatic activity of lipase in hemolymph, fat bodies, and mid-gut of the 4th instars at 48 h showed significant drop in B. bassianamore than spinetoram. Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) levels in hemolymph for both insecticides were equal and exceeded the control. Fat bodies and mid-gut possessed the highest GST activity in B. bassianafollowed by spinetoram and the control. Residual efficacy of spinetoram exceled B. bassianaat their field rates under semi-field condition in Bani-Suef along the two seasons of maize crop against both instars. Eventually, B. bassianaalongside spinetoram could afford good control especially on early instar larvae of S. frugiperda.

Abstract

The toxic and developmental properties of the three essential oils isolated from Artemisia monosperma, Origanum vulgare and Schinus molle were evaluated against Culex pipiens. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis showed that capillene (36.86%), d-pulegone (77.45%) and α-phellandrene (29.78%) were the most dominant compounds in A. monosperma, O. vulgare and S. molle, respectively. The toxicity of the oils was evaluated against larvae, pupae and adults of C. pipiens after treatments of the 1st instar mosquito larvae with different concentrations of oils. The oils of O. vulgare, A. monosperma and S. molle caused 77.33, 64.0 and 56.67% larval mortality at 100 mg/L, respectively. The oils showed a strong cumulative toxicity with LC50 values of 10.27, 12.75 and 14.52 mg/L for O. vulgare, S. molle and A. monosperma, respectively. Moreover, the oil of O. vulgare strongly inhibited adult eclosion with IC50 value of 10.50 mg/L. Furthermore, the oils caused significant prolongation of the larval and pupal periods. Abstract

Understanding reproduction is essential for controlling pests and supporting beneficial insects. Among the many factors allowing optimal reproduction, sperm availability is key to sex ratio control in hymenopteran parasitoids since males are haploid and only females come from fertilization. Microplitisrufiventris (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) is a solitary endoparasitoid of some noctuids. This insect could be used for the control of the cotton leafworm Spodopteralittoralis. Under controlled conditions, sperm quantity was measured in virgin males at 1, 5, 10, and 15 days, it increases in adult males until the fifth day. Sperm stock of control males increased from 2500 at one day to 6700 at 15 days. With the control climatic condition being 25 °C, we tested the effects of a time-limited increase of temperature that can be found in Egypt (36 and 40 °C) during one day at the early pupal stage. Emerging males had 1500 and 420 sperm at 36 and 40 °C, respectively, both lived shorter than the control. The sperm potential of males is dependent on both age and temperature during the early pupal stage. It could have dramatic consequences on the sex ratio of M. rufiventris in natural and controlled populations.

Evaluation studies were carried out to simulate realistic field exposures of sulfoxaflor and flonicamid against Aphis gossypii at foraging time of Apis mellifera. Semi-field trials of field rates of sulfoxaflor and flonicamid against A. gossypii laboratory strain at 48 h of exposure had equipollent overall mean of mortality of 62.50 and 63.50%, respectively in season of 2020, likewise 60.50 and 62.50%, respectively in season of 2021. Lethal time values (LT1) had ranges of 51.33–32.46 days for sulfoxaflor and 49.00–39.55 days for flonicamid. Laboratory trials on foraging honeybees (∼21 days old) at 5 h of exposure showed an excellence for sulfoxaflor (5.00%) in overall mean of mortality compared to flonicamid (2.75%) in season of 2020. Likewise, sulfoxaflor (4.75%) surpassed flonicamid (2.75%) in season of 2021. The highest LT1s on honeybees for sulfoxaflor and flonicamid reached 27.45 and 10.94 days, respectively. International Organization for Biological Control classified both insecticides to be harmless on honeybees. Survival foraging bees exposed to LD50s of the tested insecticides had malformed digestive tracts gradually vanished along week of exposure. Abstract

Cotton is an important agro-industrial crop across the globe. Improving the fiber quality and yield potential of cotton are major commercial targets for cotton breeders. The cotton lint yield is computed by multiplying three fundamental yield constituents: average boll weight, boll number per unit ground area, and lint percentage. The cotton species Gossypium arboreum exhibits a wide range of desirable traits, which are absent in the congener Gossypium hirsutum. Four parental lines of G. hirsutum and G. arboreum, with significant differences in boll-related traits, were used to develop the following four F2 populations: Mei Zhongmian × Chimu Heizi (MC), Mei Zhongmian × L-02292-3 (ML), Dixie king × Suyuan 04-44 (DS), and Dixie king × Pamuk (DP), in order to study complex traits, such as boll weight (BW) (g), lint percentage (LP) (%), boll upper width (BUW), boll medium width (BMW), boll lower width (BLU), and boll length (BL) (mm). In segregation populations, extensive phenotypic differences and transgressive segregation were observed. The results show that most of the correlation clusters were negatively associated with boll weight and lint percentage. The positive correlation clusters were observed among boll upper width (BUW), boll medium width (BMW), boll lower width (BLW), and boll length (BL). Seven of the twenty-four extracted principal components had eigenvalues > 1. This accounted for 62.2% of the difference between the four F2 populations. Principal component 1 accounted for 15.1% of the overall variability. The variation in principal component 1 was mainly attributed to boll lower width (BLW), boll medium width (BMW), boll upper width (BUW), boll length (BL), and boll weight (BW) of the ML population. The heritability estimates varied between high, medium, and low for various traits among the studied F2 populations. Interestingly, all traits demonstrated low genetic advance, which indicates that non-additive genes controlled these characters and that direct selection for these traits is not beneficial. Abstract

Rice–wheat (RW) rotation is the largest agriculture production system in South Asia with a multifaceted role in maintaining the livelihood of people. The customary practices and indiscriminate use of synthetic fertilizers have culminated in the decline of its productivity and profitability during the past two decades, thus affecting the sustainability of wheat. Safe Rock® Minerals (SRM) is a multi-nutrient rich natural rock mineral with great potential to manage soil degradation, reducing the input of fertilizers, improving soil fertility, and plant health. Thus, a field trial was conducted at the research farm of ICAR—Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi from 2016 to 2018 to evaluate the impact of Safe Rock® Minerals (SRM) on biometric parameters, productivity, quality, and nutrient uptake by conventional wheat and System of Wheat Intensification (SWI) in the wheat–rice cropping system. The results indicate that SWI performed better in terms of growth, yield, and quality parameters than conventional wheat. Among nutrient management practices; the highest growth, yield, and yield attributes of wheat were achieved with the use of SRM application 250 kg ha−1 + 100% Recommended Dose of Fertilizer (RDF). SRM application also increased grain protein content significantly.
