The incidence of cancer throughout the world is increasing with the prolonged life expectancy that has resulted from improvements in standards of living. About half of all cancer patients receive radiotherapy, either as part of their primary treatment or in connection with recurrences or palliation. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has estimated that approximately 2500 teletherapy machines were in use in 1998 in developing countries and that 10000 such machines may be needed by 2015. The preparation of this Safety paper was initiated as a result of an expected increase in the construction of radiotherapy facilities, and in response to Member States that have requested practical guidance regarding the design and shielding of such facilities. In this work, The Harshaw Model 4500 Manual TLD Reader was used for Thermo Luminescence Dosimetry (TLD) by using a set of 20 chips Dosimeter TLD-100. A comprehensive set of measurements were performed for five different sites inside and outside the accelerator. The obtained results showed agreement with published data in some location while the results of the working staff site were within the limits of the recommended permissible dose where it was about 0.5 m Sievert per year.

These ulcers pose a therapeutic challenge with multiple modalities proposed for treatment, but with scarce evidence of efficacy of any single modality. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of iron oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ) and carbon black in micro and nanoscales incorporated into an epoxy adhesive matrix for gamma-ray attenuation. The composites were prepared via a simple and cost-effective synthesis method. The grain size of powder NPs was measured using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), and the particle size was about 20 ± 5 nm and 31.46 ± 2 nm for carbon and Fe 2 O 3 , respectively. The morphological properties were characterized by a scanning electron microscope, which indicated the excellent dispersion of NPs, which blocked almost all pores of the composite and increased the capability of radiation attenuation. In addition, the chemical composition of samples using energy dispersive X-rays (EDX) and the compressive strength were measured. Furthermore, the linear and mass attenuation coefficients were determined experimentally for incident photon energies of 59.51-1408.01 keV emitted from γ-ray sources using the sodium iodide scintillation detector NaI. A comparison was conducted between the experimental data and theoretical results that obtained from XCOM software, examined the validity of the experimental results. The relation deviation rate was found to vary between 0.0008 and 2.83%. Furthermore, the measurement of the relation deviation rate between the linear attenuation coefficients of micro and nano composites revealed a range of values between 1 and 25%. Also, shielding parameters such as half-value layer (HVL), tenth-value layer (TVL), mean free path (MFP), and effective atomic number (Z eff ) were measured. Moreover, the equivalent atomic number (Z eq ), absorption, and exposure buildup factors for prepared samples were calculated. The results showed that the incorporation of Fe 2 O 3 NPs enhanced the shielding capability of the composites, as evidenced by the significant reduction in gamma-ray transmission. The composite materials exhibited excellent mechanical strength, making them suitable for practical applications in radiation shielding. Furthermore, it was determined that the elevation in N-Fe 2 O 3 concentration resulted in a direct increase in the linear attenuation coefficient, from 0.314 to 0.519 cm -1 at 0.5951 MeV and from 0.099 to 0.124 cm -1 at 0.662 MeV. Nevertheless, a slight increase was discerned in the identified mass attenuation coefficients at 0.1332 and 0.1408 MeV. The experimental data for MFP, HVL, and TVL demonstrate that the EFeC4 sample exhibits optimal performance, with values of 1.9, 1.3, and 4.4 cm at 0.5951 MeV, and at 0.661 MeV, the values are 8.04, 5.57, and 18.52 cm, while at 0.1408 MeV, the values are 12.06, 8.36, and 27.78 cm, respectively. Overall, this research highlights the potential of iron oxide-carbon/epoxy composites as efficient and reliable materials for gamma-ray protection in various fields, including nuclear power plants, medical facilities, and space exploration., (© 2024. This study helps in managing waste glass and greening the environment by incorporating laboratory waste glass into mortar production to make an eco-friendly shielding material against gamma rays. The efficiency of using waste glass powder as a cement replacement or addition in mortar production was studied by using two waste glass sizes: micro glass (particle size range from 10.09 to 24.73 μm) and nano glass (particle size range from 10.57 to 26.42 nm) to design different mortar specimens with varying percentages of fine glass powder from 0 to 30%. Compressive strength and flexure strength were evaluated to determine mechanical properties. The results indicated that adding WGP to mortar positively affects the characteristics of cementitious composites. The linear and mass attenuation coefficients of the samples were experimentally determined using a NaI detector and various radioactive sources (Am-241, Ba-133, Eu-152, Cs-137, and Co-60) with gamma energies ranging from 59.53 to 1332 keV. The obtained coefficients were then compared to the theoretical values of the composites using XCOM software to verify their accuracy. Additionally, the half-value layer, tenth-value layer, mean free path, and effective atomic number were computed. Rice straw is considered an agricultural waste harmful to the environment, which is abundant in most parts of the world. From this point, the present study is devoted to preparing new composites of two types of glue based on rice straw as a plentiful, low-cost matrix. Straw glue samples were prepared by mixing 20% wt. of rice straw with 80% wt. of animal glue (RS-An) and polyvinyl acetate (RS-PVA C ) at different thicknesses of 1, 2, and 3 cm. The chemical composition of the prepared samples was identified by energy dispersive X-ray analysis and their morphology was examined using a scanning electron microscope. The mechanical test explored that RS-An and RS-PVA C respectively required a stress of 25.2 and 25.5 MPa before reaching the breaking point. γ-ray shielding performance was analyzed and determined at numerous photon energies from 0.059 to 1.408 MeV emitted from five-point γ-rays sources using NaI (Tl). Linear attenuation coefficient was calculated by obtaining the area under the peak of the energy spectrum observed from Genie 2000 software in the presence and absence of the sample. The experimental results of mass attenuation coefficient were compared with theoretical data of XCOM software with relative deviation ranging from 0.10 to 2.99%. Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation code was also employed to validate the experimental results. The relative deviation of XCOM and Geant4 outcomes was 0.09-1.77%, which indicates a good agreement between them. Other radiation shielding parameters such as half value layer (HVL), tenth value layer, and mean free path were calculated in three ways: experimentally, theoretically from the XCOM database, and by simulation using Geant4 code. Additionally, effective atomic number (Z eff ), effective atomic number (N eff ), equivalent atomic number (Z eq ), and buildup factors were evaluated. Melt quenching technique was used to create Bismuth Boro-Silicate nano glasses with compositions of 45SiO 2 -10CaO- 25Na 2 O- xBi 2 O 3 - (20-x) B 2 O 3 (where x is 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mol %). Standard point sources AM-241, Ba-133, Co-60, Cs-137, and Eu-152 were used in the radiation experiment to evaluate the attenuation coefficients spanning the energy range of 59.51 keV to 1048.01 keV. The findings show that adding Bi 2 O 3 in place of B 2 O 3 increases the following: radiation protection efficiency (RPE%), transmission factor (TF%), absorption buildup factor values (ABF), exposure buildup factor values (EBF), mass attenuation coefficients (MACs), linear attenuation coefficients (LACs), and radiation protection efficiency (RPE%). This study not only provides an innovative technique for producing rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) composites, but it also offers a way to reuse metallurgical solid waste. Rigid polyurethane (RPUF) composite samples have been prepared with different proportions of iron slag as additives, with a range of 0-25% mass by weight. The process of grinding iron slag microparticles into iron slag nanoparticles powder was accomplished with the use of a high-energy ball mill. The synthesized samples have been characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, and Scanning Electron Microscope. Then, their radiation shielding properties were measured by using A hyper-pure germanium detector using point sources 241Am, 133 BA, 152 EU, 137Cs, and 60Co, with an energy range of 0.059-1.408 MeV. Then using Fluka simulation code to validate the results in the energy range of photon energies of 0.0001-100 MeV. The linear attenuation coefficient, mass attenuation coefficient, mean free path, half-value layer and tenth-value layer, were calculated to determine the radiation shielding characteristics of the composite samples. The calculated values are in good agreement with the calculated values. The results of this study showed that the gamma-ray and neutron attenuation parameters of the studied polyurethane composite samples have improved. Moreover, the effect of iron slag not only increases the gamma-ray attenuation shielding properties but also enhances compressive strength and the thermal stability. Radioactive iodine isotopes especially 131 I are used for diagnosis and treatment of different types of cancer diseases. Due to the leak of radioactive iodine into the patient's urine in turn, the wastewater would be contaminated, so it is worth preparing a novel adsorption green material to remove the radioactive iodine from wastewater efficiently. The removal of 127 I and 131 I contaminants from aqueous solution is a problem of interest. Therefore, this work presents a new study for removing the stable iodine 127 I - and radioactive iodine 131 I from aqueous solutions by using the novel nano adsorbent (Nano ZnO/MWCNTs) which is synthesized by the arc discharge method. It is an economic method for treating contaminated water from undesired dissolved iodine isotopes. The optimal conditions for maximum removal are (5 mg/100 ml) as optimum dose with shacking (200 rpm) for contact time of (60 min), at (25 °C) in an acidic medium of (pH = 5). After the adsorption process, the solution is filtrated and the residual iodide ( 127 I - ) is measured at a maximum UV wavelength absorbance of 225 nm. The maximum adsorption capacity is (15.25 mg/g); therefore the prepared nano adsorbent (Nano ZnO/MWCNTs) is suitable for treating polluted water from low iodide concentrations. The adsorption mechanism of 127 I - on to the surface of (Nano ZnO/MWCNTs) is multilayer physical adsorption according to Freundlich isotherm model and obeys the Pseudo-first order kinetic model. According to Temkin isotherm model the adsorption is exothermic. The removal efficiency of Nano ZnO/MWCNTs for stable iodine ( 127 I - ) from aqueous solutions has reached 97.23%, 89.75%, and 64.78% in case of initial concentrations; 0.1843 ppm, 0.5014 ppm and 1.0331 ppm, respectively. For the prepared radio iodine ( 131 I - ) solution of radioactivity (20 µCi), the dose of nano adsorbent was (10 mg/100 ml) and the contact time was (60 min) at (pH = 5) with shacking (200 rpm) at (25 °C). The filtration process was done by using a syringe filter of a pore size (450 nm) after 2 days to equilibrate. The removal efficiency reached (34.16%) after the first cycle of treatment and the percentage of residual radio iodine was (65.86%). The removal efficiency reached (94.76%) after five cycles of treatment and the percentage of residual radio iodine was (5.24%). Recently, there has been a surge of interest in the application of radiation-shielding materials. One promising research avenue involves using free-lead metal oxides/polymer composites, which have been studied for their radiation shielding and characterization properties. This study reinforced the dimethylpolysiloxane (silicone rubber) composites with micro- and nano-sized particles of tin oxide, cadmium oxide, and bismuth oxide as additive materials. The composites were tested with 20 and 50 weight fractions, and their attenuation coefficients were measured using a NaI(TI) detector at gamma-ray energies ranging from 59.54 to 1408.01 keV. Also, the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were observed and compared with those of free silicone rubber. The results showed that the 50% nano metal oxide/SR composites exhibited better thermal stability and attenuation properties than the other composites, also possessing unique attributes such as lightweight composition and exceptional flexibility. Consequently, this composite material holds immense potential for safeguarding vital organs, including the eyes and gonads, during radiological diagnosis or treatment procedures. This research aimed to examine the radiation shielding properties of unique polymer composites for medical and non-medical applications. For this purpose, polymer composites, based on poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) as a matrix, were prepared and reinforced with micro- and nanoparticles of ZrO 2 fillers at a loading of 15%, 30%, and 45% by weight. Using the high purity germanium (HPGe) detector, the suggested polymer composites' shielding characteristics were assessed for various radioactive sources. The experimental values of the mass attenuation coefficients (MAC) of the produced composites agreed closely with those obtained theoretically from the XCOM database. Different shielding parameters were estimated at a broad range of photon energies, including the linear attenuation coefficient (μ), tenth value layer (TVL), half value layer (HVL), mean free path (MFP), effective electron density (N eff ), effective atomic number (Z eff ), and equivalent atomic number (Z eq ), as well as exposure buildup factor (EBF) and energy absorption buildup factor (EABF) to provide more shielding information about the penetration of γ-rays into the chosen composites. The results showed that increasing the content of micro and nano ZrO 2 particles in the PMMA matrix increases μ values and decreases HVL, TVL, and MFP values. P-45nZ sample with 45 wt% of ZrO 2 nanoparticles had the highest μ values, which varied between 2.6546 and 0.0991 cm -1 as γ-ray photon energy increased from 0.0595 to 1.408 MeV, respectively. Furthermore, the highest relative increase rate in μ values between nano and micro composites was 17.84%, achieved for the P-45nZ sample at 59.53 keV. These findings demonstrated that ZrO 2 nanoparticles shield radiation more effectively than micro ZrO 2 even at the same photon energy and filler wt%. Thus, the proposed nano ZrO 2 /PMMA composites can be used as effective shielding materials to lessen the transmitted radiation dose in radiation facilities., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

In this work, the effect of adding Pb nano/microparticles in polyurethane foams to improve thermo-physical and mechanical properties were investigated. Moreover, an attempt has been made to modify the micron-sized lead metal powder into nanostructured Pb powder using a high-energy ball mill. Two types of fillers were used, the first is Pb in micro scale and the second is Pb in nano scale. A lead/polyurethane nanocomposite is made using the in-situ polymerization process. The different characterization techniques describe the state of the dispersion of fillers in foam. The effects of these additions in the foam were evaluated, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) have all been used to analyze the morphology and dispersion of lead in polyurethane. The findings demonstrate that lead is uniformly distributed throughout the polyurethane matrix. The compression test demonstrates that the inclusion of lead weakens the compression strength of the nanocomposites in comparison to that of pure polyurethane. The TGA study shows that the enhanced thermal stability is a result of the inclusion of fillers, especially nanofillers. The shielding efficiency has been studied, MAC, LAC, HVL, MFP and Z eff were determined either experimentally or by Monte Carlo calculations. The nuclear radiation shielding properties were simulated by the FLUKA code for the photon energy range of 0.0001-100 MeV.

This study investigates the gamma radiation shielding properties of cement-ball clay matrix composites doped with micro- and nano-sized cadmium oxide (CdO) particles. The linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) was determined using a sodium iodide (NaI) detector and five radioactive point sources with energies ranging from 59.5 to 1408 keV. The LAC values obtained were compared to the XCOM database and found to be in good agreement. The composites' half-value layer (HVL), tenth value layer (TVL), mean free path (MFP), effective atomic number (Z eff ), equivalent atomic number (Z eq ), and absorption buildup factor (EABF) were determined. The results showed that the addition of CdO particles improved the radiation-shielding behavior of the composites and increasing the weight fraction of CdO particles increased the shielding effectiveness. The results also illustrated that when nano-sized CdO particles were compared to their micro-sized counterparts, there was a significant enhancement in radiation shielding effectiveness. For instance, a composite material composed of 50% cement, 41.7% ball clay, and 3.8% nano CdO at an energy level of 0.0595 MeV exhibited a remarkable 12.2% increase in attenuation, surpassing the performance of the micro-sized sample with an equivalent concentration. Similarly, another composite consisting of 50% cement, 33.3% ball clay, and 16.7% nano CdO demonstrated a significant 15.4% increase in attenuation at the same energy level, when compared to the micro-sized sample. This work is an attempt to employ the electric arc furnace (EAF) slag as a by-product material to develop an alternative and environmentally friendly material for gamma-radiation protection applications such as in medical and industrial areas. For this purpose, different concentrations of micro-sized EAF slag (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 500, and 800 phr) were incorporated as fillers in the natural rubber (NR) matrix to produce the shielding composites. In addition, nano-sized EAF slag particles were prepared by using a high-energy ball milling technique to investigate the effect of particle size on the gamma-radiation shielding properties. The synthesized micro and nano EAF/NR composites were tested as protective materials against gamma-radiation by employing NaI(Tl) scintillation detector and standard radioactive point sources ( 152 Eu, 137 Cs, 133 Ba, and 60 Co). Different shielding parameters such as linear and mass attenuation coefficient, half value layer (HVL), tenth value layer, mean free path, effective atomic number (Z eff ), and effective electron density (N eff ) were determined to assess the radiation shielding capability of the EAF/NR composites. Furthermore, equivalent atomic number (Z eq ) and the exposure buildup factor values for photon energy in the range from 0.015 to 15 MeV were also computed by Geometric Progression method. The experimental results of micro EAF/NR composites showed that at 121.78 keV, EAF0 composite (without EAF slag content) had the lowest μ value of 0.1695 cm -1 , while the EAF800 composite (which was loaded with 800 phr of micro EAF slag) had the highest μ value of 0.2939 cm -1 at the same energy, which in turn decreases the HVL from 4.09 to 2.36 cm, respectively. Therefore, increasing the filler weight fractions of EAF slag in the NR matrix, increases the shielding properties of the composites. Moreover, the NR composite reinforced with 800 phr of nano EAF slag has better gamma-radiation shielding efficiency compared to that filled with 800 phr of micro EAF slag. Sheets of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) loaded with magnesium oxide in micro and nano were synthesized with different weight percentages of micro-MgO (0,5,10,20 and 30% by weight) and nano-MgO (5 and 30%) and shaped in form of disc and dog bone shape. The morphological, mechanical, and attenuation characteristics of each concentration were determined. The linear attenuation coefficients (LAC) of the prepared discs were calculated using a well-calibrated scintillation detector and five standard gamma-ray point sources ( 241 Am, 133 Ba, 137 Cs, 60 Co and 152 Eu). The LAC was theoretically calculated for HDPE/micro-MgO composites using XCOM software. A good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results was observed. The comparison between micro and nano-MgO as a filler in HDPE was evaluated. The results proved that the loaded nano-MgO in different proportions of HDPE produced greater attenuation coefficients than its micro counterpart. The addition of nano MgO with different weight percentage led to a significant improvement in the mechanical properties of HDPE, the ultimate force and ultimate stress increased as the concentration of nano MgO increased, and the young modulus of HDPE also increased with increasing concentration of micro and nano MgO., (© 2023. Improving mortar shielding properties to preserve environmental and human safety in radiation facilities is essential. Conventional cement mortars, composed of cement, water, and lime aggregate, are crucial for radiation shielding. Using recycled aggregates to produce new mortar and concrete compositions has attracted the attention of several researchers. In the current study, waste marble and iron slag as aggregates are used to create novel cement mortar compositions to study the aggregate's impact on the radiation attenuation capability of the mortar. Three mortar groups, including a control mortar (CM-Ctrl), were prepared based on cement and waste marble. The other two groups (CM-MIS, CM-NIS), contained 25% iron slag at different particle sizes as a replacement for a waste marble. The study aims to compare iron slag in their micro and nano sizes to discuss the effect of particle size on the mortar radiation capability. For this purpose, the NaI scintillation detector and radioactive point sources ( 241 Am, 133 Ba, 137 Cs, 60 Co, and 152 Eu) were utilized to measure several shielding parameters, such as the linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), half-value layer (HVL), tenth-value layer (TVL), and mean free path (MFP), for the produced mortars at different photon energies. Furthermore, the transmission electron microscope (TEM) is used to measure the particle size of the aggregates. In addition, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) is utilized to acquire the cross-section morphologies of the prepared mortars. According to our findings, mortars prepared with nano-iron slag and waste marble offered superior shielding capabilities than mortars containing natural sand or fine crushed stone. The nano iron slag mortar can be utilized in place of typical sand mortar for applications as rendering or plastering materials for building medical diagnostic and CT scanner rooms, due to its improved shielding abilities.

Due to the present industrial world, the risk of radioactivity is notably increasing. Thus, an appropriate shielding material needs to be designed to protect humans and the environment against radiation. In view of this, the present study aims to design new composites of the main matrix of bentonite-gypsum with a low-cost, abundant, and natural matrix. This main matrix was intercalated in various amounts with micro- and nanosized particles of bismuth oxide (Bi 2 O 3 ) as the filler. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) recognized the chemical composition of the prepared specimen. The morphology of the bentonite-gypsum specimen was tested using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SEM images showed the uniformity and porosity of a cross-section of samples. The NaI (Tl) scintillation detector was used with four radioactive sources ( 241 Am, 137 Cs, 133 Ba, and 60 Co) of various photon energies. Genie 2000 software was used to determine the area under the peak of the energy spectrum observed in the presence and absence of each specimen. Then, the linear and mass attenuation coefficients were obtained. After comparing the experimental results of the mass attenuation coefficient with the theoretical values from XCOM software, it was found that the experimental results were valid. The radiation shielding parameters were computed, including the mass attenuation coefficients (MAC), half-value layer (HVL), tenth-value layer (TVL), and mean free path (MFP), which are dependent on the linear attenuation coefficient. In addition, the effective atomic number and buildup factors were calculated. The results of all of these parameters provided the same conclusion, which confirms the improvement of the properties of γ-ray shielding materials using a mixture of bentonite and gypsum as the main matrix, which is much better than using bentonite alone. Moreover, bentonite mixed with gypsum is a more economical means of production. Therefore, the investigated bentonite-gypsum materials have potential uses in applications such as gamma-ray shielding materials.

This study aims to explore the radiation protection properties of white mortars based on white cement as a binder and Bi 2 O 3 micro and nanoparticles in proportions of 15 and 30% by weight as replacement sand. The average particle size of micro- and nano-Bi 2 O 3 was measured using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The cross-sectional morphology and distribution of Bi 2 O3 within the samples can be obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), showing that nanoscale Bi 2 O 3 particles have a more homogeneous distribution within the samples than microscale Bi 2 O 3 particles. The shielding parameters of the proposed mortars were measured using the HPGe detector at various γ-ray energies emitted by standard radioactive point sources 241 Am, 133 Ba, 60 Co, 137 Cs, and 152 Eu. The experimental values of the prepared mortars' mass attenuation coefficients (MAC) match well with those determined theoretically from the XCOM database. Other shielding parameters, including half value layer (HVL), tenth value layer (TVL), mean free path (MFP), effective electron density (N eff ), effective atomic number (Z eff ), equivalent atomic number (Z eq ), and exposure buildup factor (EBF), were also determined at different photon energies to provide more shielding information about the penetration of gamma radiation into the selected mortars. The obtained results indicated that the sample containing 30% by weight of nano Bi 2 O 3 has the largest attenuation coefficient value. Furthermore, the results show that the sample with a high concentration of Bi 2 O 3 has the highest equivalent atomic numbers and the lowest HVL, TVL, MFP, and EBF values. Finally, it can be concluded that Bi 2 O 3 nanoparticles have higher efficiency and protection compared to microparticles, especially at lower gamma-ray energies.

In the current study, the gamma-radiation-shielding characteristics of novel gypsum-lime-waste marble-based mortars reinforced with micro-PbO and nano-PbO powders were investigated. In total, seven mortar groups, including a control mortar (named GLM), were prepared. The other groups contained10, 20, and 30 wt.% of both micro-PbO and nano-PbO as a waste marble replacement. This study aimed to explore the effect of particle size and concentrations of PbO powders on the γ-ray-shielding capability of GLM mortars. For this purpose, an HPGe detector and five standard radioactive point sources ( 241 Am, 133 Ba, 137 Cs, 60 Co, and 152 Eu) were employed to measure different shielding parameters, including the linear attenuation coefficient (μ), mass attenuation coefficient (μ m ), mean free path (MFP), half-value layer (HVL), and tenth-value layer (TVL), for the prepared samples in the energy range between 59.53 keV to 1408.01 keV. On the basis of μ m values, other significant shielding parameters such as effective atomic number (Z eff ), effective electron density (N eff ), equivalent atomic number (Z eq ), and exposure buildup factor (EBF) were also computed to explore the potential usage of the proposed mortars as radiation protective materials. The results reported that the smallest HVL, TVL, and MPF, as well as the largest attenuation values, were obtained for mortars reinforced by nano-PbO compared to those containing micro-PbO. It can be concluded from the results that the mortar samples containing nano-PbO had a remarkably improved gamma-radiation-shielding ability. Thus, these mortars can be used for radiation shielding on walls in nuclear facilities to reduce the transmitted radiation dose.

This paper introduces a new approach of testing piezoelectric nanofibers as antibacterial mat. In this work, both Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and PVDF embedded with thermoplastic polyurethane nanofibers are synthesized as nanofibers mat via electrospinning technique. Then, such mat is analyzed as piezoelectric material to generate electric voltage under different mechanical excitations. Furthermore, morphological and chemical characteristics have been operated to prove the existence of beta sheets piezoelectricity of the synthesized nanofibers mats. Then, the synthesized nanofibers surfaces have been cyclically stretched and exposed to bacteria specimen. It has been noticed that the generated voltage and the corresponding localized electric field positively affect the growth of bacteria and reduces the formation of K. penomenue samples bacteria colonies. In addition, the effect of both stretching frequency and pulses numbers have been studied on the bacteria count, growth kinetics, and protein leakage. Our contribution here is to introduce an innovative way of the direct impact of the generated electric field from piezoelectric nanofibers on the reduction of bacteria growth, without depending on traditional anti-bacterial nanoparticles. The use of radiation is mandatory in modern life, but the harms of radiation cannot be avoided. To minimize the effect of radiation, protection is required for the safety of the environment and human life. Hence, inventing a better shield than a conventional shielding material is the priority of researchers. Due to this reason, this current research deals with an innovative shielding material named EKZ samples having a composition of (epoxy resin (90-40) wt %-kaolin clay (10-25) wt %-ZnO-nano particles (0-35) wt %). The numerous compositional variations of (epoxy resin, kaolin clay, and ZnO-nano particles on the prepared EKZ samples varied the density of the samples from 1.24 to 1.95 g/cm 3 . The radiation shielding parameter of linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), half value layer (HVL), tenth value layer (TVL), and radiation protection efficiency (RPE) were measured to evaluate the radiation diffusion efficiency of newly made EKZ samples. These radiation shielding parameters were measured with the help of the HPGe detector utilizing the three-point sources (Am-241, Cs-137, and Co-60). The obtained results exposed that the value of linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) and radiation protection efficiency (RPE) was maximum, yet the value of half value layer (HVL), and tenth value layer (TVL), were minimum due to the greater amount of kaolin clay and ZnO-nanoparticles, whereas the amount of epoxy resin was lesser. In addition, it has been clear that as-prepared EKZ samples are suitable for low-dose shielding applications as well as EKZ-35 showed a better shielding ability.

In this work, morphological and attenuation parameters of gamma ray protection were studied. Dimethyl polysiloxane (Silicon Rubber) Mixed with micro-size and nano-size lead oxide particles at different weight percentage were prepared. The morphological structure of PbO/SR composites was investigated by SEM test, according to SEM images the nano PbO particles are more uniform micro PbO particles. The radiation attenuation test was carried out using 3" × 3" NaI (TI) detector for (Am-241), (Cs-137), (Co-60), (Ba-133), and (Eu-152). The effect on attenuation property of SR-PbO shown that the increase of PbO filler significantly increases the linear attenuation coefficient and improve the other radiation protection parameters especially at low gamma energy. It's found that a significant agreement between the experimental result and theoretical result from Xcom program. In this study it's found matrix filled with nano-PbO have higher gamma shielding ability compared to micro-PbO matrix at the same filler concentration. This work aimed to intensively study polypropylene samples (PP) embedded with micro- and nanoparticles of Bi 2 O 3 for their application in radiation shielding. Samples were prepared by adding 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% of Bi 2 O 3 microparticles (mBi 2 O 3 ) by weight, and adding 10% and 50% of Bi 2 O 3 nanoparticles (nBi 2 O 3 ), in addition to the control sample (pure polypropylene). The morphology of the prepared samples was tested, and also, the shielding efficiency of gamma rays was tested for different sources with different energies. The experimental LAC were determined using a NaI scintillation detector, the experimental results were compared with NIST-XCOM results, and a good agreement was noticed. The LAC values have been used to calculate some specific parameters, such as half value layer (HVL), mean free path (MFP), tenth value layer (TVL), and radiation protection efficiency (RPE), which are useful for discussing the shielding capabilities of gamma rays. The results of the shielding parameters show that the PP embedded with nBi 2 O 3 gives better attenuation than its counterpart, PP embedded with mBi 2 O 3 , at all studied energies.

Recently, polymers have entered into many medical and industrial applications. This work aimed to intensively study polypropylene samples (PP) embedded with micro and nanoparticles of PbO for their application in radiation shielding. Samples were prepared by adding 10%, 30%, and 50% by weight of PbO microparticles (mPbO) and adding 10% and 50% PbO nanoparticles (nPbO), in addition to the control sample (pure polypropylene). The morphology of the prepared samples was tested; on the other hand, the shielding efficiency of gamma rays was tested for different sources with different energies. The experimental linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) was determined using a NaI scintillation detector, the experimental results were compared with NIST-XCOM results, and a good agreement was noticed. The LAC was 0.8005 cm -1 for PP-10%nPbO and 0.6283 cm -1 for PP-10%mPbO while was 5.8793 cm -1 for PP-50%nPbO and 3.9268 cm -1 for PP-50%mPbO at 0.060 MeV. The LAC values have been converted to some specific values, such as half value layer (HVL), mean free path (MFP), tenth value layer (TVL), and radiation protection efficiency (RPE) which are useful for discussing the shielding capabilities for gamma-rays. The results of shielding parameters reveal that the PP embedded with nPbO gives better attenuation than its counterpart pp embedded with mPbO at all studied energies.

In this study, synthetic silicone rubber (SR) and Bi 2 O 3 micro- and nanoparticles were purchased. The percentages for both sizes of Bi 2 O 3 were 10, 20 and 30 wt% as fillers. The morphological, mechanical and shielding properties were determined for all the prepared samples. The Linear Attenuation Coefficient ( LAC ) values of the silicon rubber (SR) without Bi 2 O 3 and with 5, 10, 30 and 30% Bi 2 O 3 (in micro and nano sizes) were experimentally measured using different radioactive point sources in the energy range varying from 0.06 to 1.333 MeV. Additionally, we theoretically calculated the LAC for SR with micro-Bi 2 O 3 using XCOM software. A good agreement was noticed between the two methods. The NaI (Tl) scintillation detector and four radioactive point sources (Am-241, Ba-133, Cs-137 and Co-60) were used in the measurements. Other shielding parameters were calculated for the prepared samples, such as the Half Value Layer (HVL), Mean Free Path (MFP) and Radiation Protection Efficiency (RPE), all of which proved that adding nano-Bi 2 O 3 ratios of SR produces higher shielding efficiency than its micro counterpart.

We prepared red clays by introducing different percentages of PbO, Bi 2 O 3 , and CdO. In order to understand how the introduction of these oxides into red clay influences its attenuation ability, the mass attenuation coefficient of the clays was experimentally measured in a lab using an HPGe detector. The theoretical shielding capability of the material present was obtained using XCOM to verify the accuracy of the experimental results. We found that the experimental and theoretical values agree to a very high degree of precision. The effective atomic number ( Z eff ) of pure red clay, and red clay with the three metal oxides was determined. The pure red clay had the lowest Z eff of the tested samples, which means that introducing any of these three oxides into the clay will greatly enhance its Z eff , and consequently its attenuation capability. Additionally, the Z eff for red clay with 10 wt% CdO is lower than the Z eff of red clay with 10 wt% Bi 2 O 3 and PbO. We also prepared red clay using 10 wt% CdO nanoparticles and compared its attenuation ability with the red clay prepared with 10 wt% PbO, Bi 2 O 3 , and CdO microparticles. We found that the MAC of the red clay with 10 wt% nano-CdO was higher than the MAC of the clay with microparticle samples. Accordingly, nanoparticles could be a useful way to enhance the shielding ability of current radiation shielding materials.

Polymers are often used in medical applications, therefore, some novel polymers and their interactions with photons have been studied. The gamma-ray shielding parameters for Polymethylpentene (PMP), Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), Polyoxymethylene (POM), Polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF), and Polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE) polymers were determined using the Geant4 simulation and discussed in the current work. The mass attenuation coefficients ( μ / ρ ) were simulated at low and high energies between 0.059 and 1.408 MeV using different radionuclides. The accuracy of the Geant4 simulated results were checked with the XCOM software. The two different methods had good agreement with each other. Exposure buildup factor (EBF) was calculated and discussed in terms of polymers under study and photon energy. Effective atomic number ( Z eff ) and electron density ( N eff ) were calculated and analyzed at different energies. Additionally, the half-value layer (HVL) of the polymers was evaluated, and the results of this parameter showed that PCTFE had the highest probability of interaction with gamma photons compared to those of the other tested polymers.

The gamma-ray shielding ability of various Bentonite-Cement mixed materials from northeast Egypt have been examined by determining their theoretical and experimental mass attenuation coefficients, μ m (cm 2 g -1 ), at photon energies of 59.6, 121.78, 344.28, 661.66, 964.13, 1173.23, 1332.5 and 1408.01 keV emitted from 241 Am, 137 Cs, 152 Eu and 60 Co point sources. The μ m was theoretically calculated using the chemical compositions obtained by Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX), while a NaI (Tl) scintillation detector was used to experimentally determine the μ m (cm 2 g -1 ) of the mixed samples. The theoretical values are in acceptable agreement with the experimental calculations of the XCom software. The linear attenuation coefficient (μ), mean free path (MFP), half-value layer (HVL) and the exposure buildup factor (EBF) were also calculated by knowing the μ m values of the examined samples. The gamma-radiation shielding ability of the selected Bentonite-Cement mixed samples have been studied against other puplished shielding materials. Knowledge of various factors such as thermo-chemical stability, availability and water holding capacity of the bentonite-cement mixed samples can be analyzed to determine the effectiveness of the materials to shield gamma rays.

The gamma radiation shielding ability for CaO-K 2 O-Na 2 O-P 2 O 5 glasses were experimentally determined between 0.0595 and 1.41 MeV. The experimental MAC results were compared with theoretical results obtained from the XCOM software to test the accuracy of the experimental values. Additionally, the effect of increasing the P 2 O 5 in the glass composition, or reducing the Na 2 O content, was evaluated at varying energies. For the fabricated glasses, the experimental data strongly agreed with the XCOM results. The effective atomic number (Z eff ) of the fabricated glasses was also determined. The Z eff values start out at their maximum (12.41-12.55) at the lowest tested energy, 0.0595 MeV, and decrease to 10.69-10.80 at 0.245 MeV. As energy further increases, the Z eff values remain almost constant between 0.344 and 1.41 MeV. The mean free path (MFP) of the fabricated glasses is investigated and we found that the lowest MFP value occurs at the lowest tested energy, 0.0595 MeV, and lies within the range of 1.382-1.486 cm, while the greatest MFP can be found at the highest tested energy, 1.41 MeV, within the range of 8.121-8.656 cm. At all energies, the KCNP40 sample has the lowest MFP, while the KCNP60 sample has the greatest. The half value layer (HVL) for the KCNP-X glasses is determined. For all the selected energies, the HVL values follow the order of KCNP40 < KCNP45 < KCNP50 < KCNP55 < KCNP60. The HVL of the KCNP50 sample increased from 0.996 to 2.663, 3.392, 4.351, and 5.169 cm for energies of 0.0595, 0.245, 0.444, 0.779, and 1.11 MeV, respectively. The radiation protection efficiency (RPE) results reveal that decreasing the P 2 O 5 content in the glasses improves the radiation shielding ability of the samples. Thus, the KCNP40 sample has the best potential for photon attenuation applications.

The over-reliance on antibiotics and their enormous misuse has led to warnings of a future without effective medicines and so, the need for alternatives to antibiotics has become a must. Non-traditional antibacterial treatment was performed by using an aray of nanocomposites synergised with exposure to electromagnetic waves. In this manuscript, electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofiber mats embedded with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were synthesized. The nanocomposites were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Current-Voltage (I-V) curves, and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) along with analysis of antibacterial impact against E. coli and S. aureus bacteria, studied by bacterial growing analysis, growth kinetics, and cellular cytotoxicity. The results indicated a spherical grain shape of silver of average size 20 nm and nanofibers' mean diameter of less than 100 nm. The nanocomposite mats showed good exposure to bacteria and the ability to sustain release of silver for a relatively long time. Moreover, the applied electromagnetic waves (EMWs) were shown to be a synergistic co-factor in killing bacteria even at low concentrations of Ag NPs. This caused pronounced alterations of the bacterial preserved packing of the cell membrane. Thereby, the treatment with nanocomposite mats under EM wave exposure elucidated maximum inhibition for both bacterial strains. It was concluded that the functioning of nanofiber with silver nanoparticles and exposure to electromagnetic waves improved the antibacterial impact compared to each one alone.

Low cost scintillation detectors as compared with HPGe detectors are considered to be one of most important radiation detection tools. Therefore, these detectors can be manufactured in different shapes and work at room temperature without any cooling systems, which added an extra advantage to it. This work presents a study of a cubic detector with a rectangular cavity in different experimental setup geometries, using standard point-like gamma-ray sources, where the efficiency of the detector in these geometries was the target to be studied. According to this aim, the data from the experimental measurements was used to determine the detector efficiency. An analytical calculation of the detector efficiency was done by using a new mathematical expression, this mathematical expression depends on the efficiency transfer technique and effective solid angle calculations. To support the mathematical model, the source-to-detector arrangement was simulated by Geant4 Monte Carlo code. The contribution of oleyl amine as a biodegradable and simple aliphatic compound containing amine functional group (-NH 2 ) was discussed in this work with respect to the remediation process of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution. Manganese oxide nanoparticles were synthesized via combustion synthesis and then functionalized with oleyl amine to form a new nanosorbent (NMn 3 O 4 -OA).The characteristics of this nanosorbent were examined using different instruments, such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray powder diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The HR-TEM images confirmed nanoscale range for NMn 3 O 4 -OA between 41.30 and 61.86 nm. The influence of diverse parameters on remediation of Zn II /Co II was examined, involving pH of metal ion solutions (pH 1-7), reaction time (1-60 min), solid amount (5-100 mg) and ionic concentration (0.1-2.0 mol/L). The optimum conditions were found pH 7 and 5-20 min reaction time for the two metal ions. Acellular dermal matrices have become a mandatory tool in reconstructive breast surgery. Since their introduction, they have been considered to be nonreactive and nonimmunogenic scaffolds. However, some patients who undergo implant-based breast reconstruction with acellular dermal matrices develop postoperative cutaneous erythema overlying their matrices, a condition commonly referred to as red breast syndrome. The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of this phenomenon. An analysis was conducted on consecutive patients who underwent acellular dermal matrix- and implant-based breast reconstructions and developed red breast syndrome that was treated surgically between April of 2017 and June of 2018 at the authors' institution. During surgery, 1-cm specimens of acellular dermal matrix were sampled and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Observations were charted to score and record the presence and thickness of biofilm, and for identification of bacteria. These measurements were performed using Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended software. Six postmastectomy breast reconstruction patients were included, all with AlloDerm Ready-to-Use-based reconstructions. All specimens were colonized by various bacteria ranging from Gram-negative bacilli to Gram-positive microorganisms. Biofilm was present in all studied specimens. The cause of skin erythema overlying acellular dermal matrix grafts, and the so-called red breast syndrome, may be related to contamination with various bacteria. Although contamination was omnipresent in analyzed samples, its clinical significance is variable. Even if acellular dermal matrix-based reconstructions are salvaged, this could come at the price of chronic local inflammation.

In the present work, high density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix mixed with micro-sized and nano-sized Cadmium oxide (CdO) particles of different concentrations were prepared by compression molding technique. The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of particle size and weight percentage of CdO particles on the gamma radiation shielding ability of CdO/HDPE composites. The mass attenuation coefficients of pure HDPE, micro-CdO/HDPE and nano-CdO/HDPE composites were evaluated at photon energies ranging from 59.53 keV to 1408.01 keV using standard radioactive point sources [ 241 Am, 133 Ba, 137 Cs, 60 Co and 152 Eu]. Adding micro and nano CdO particles to the HDPE matrix clearly increases the mass attenuation coefficients of the composites and the improvement is more significant at low γ-ray energies. The effect of particle size of CdO filler has an important role on the shielding ability of the composite. The experimental results reveal that, the composites filled with nano-CdO have better γ-radiation shielding ability compared to that filled with micro-CdO at the same weight fraction. A relative increase rate of about 16% is obtained with nano-CdO content of 40 wt% at 59.53 keV, which attributed to the higher probability of interaction between γ-rays and nanoparticles. From this study, it can be concluded that nano-CdO has a good performance shielding characteristic than micro-CdO in HDPE based radiation shielding material.

A comparative study between two nanosorbents, nanopolyaniline (NPANI) and nanopolyaniline coated with nanosilver oxide (NPANI-NAg 2 O) is explored to dispose the divalent species of Zn/Co from water and radioactive isotopes 65 Zn/ 60 Co from radioactive wastewater using batch and column techniques. NPANI-NAg 2 O nanocomposite was synthesized via solid-solid reaction. Characterization was achieved using FT-IR, TGA, XRD, SEM, HR-TEM, and surface area analysis. The images of SEM and HR-TEM confirmed the success of the modification process and the particle size was found in the range 28.78-68.28 nm (NPANI) and 25.74-85.71 nm (NPANI-NAg 2 O), respectively. Solution pH, contact time, solid dosage, and ionic concentration of the metals were studied as fundamental factors. The obtained results indicated that the optimum conditions to dispose Zn/Co divalent species using NPANI were pH 7 and 30-33 min, while NPANI-NAg 2 O exhibited the optimum conditions at pH 7 and 20-30 min. The maximum removal capacities were 100.1 and 139.75 mg/g for Zn(II) and 57.93 and 112.1 mg/g for Co(II) using NPANI and NPANI-NAg 2 O, respectively. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

A novel material was designed using layer-by-layer functionalization of nanobentonite with nanopolyaniline and oleic acid to produce an efficient NBent-NPA-OA nanosorbent to adsorb the divalent ionic Zn/Co and their radioisotopes 65 Zn/ 60 Co from tap water and radioactive wastewater. The new nanosorbent was characterized by Fourier-transform-infrared (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and determination of surface area. The NBent-NPA-OA particle size was ranged between 9.45 and 33.60nm according to HR-TEM analysis. The FT-IR exhibited several characteristic absorption peaks due to the existence of deposited layers of nanopolyaniline and oleic acid on the surface of nanobentonite surface. Different experimental parameters including, initial pH, contact time, nanosorbent, initial concentration of the target metals and interfering ions were varied, investigated and optimized to evaluate the removal efficiency of the divalent ionic Zn/Co from their solutions by the action of NBent-NPA-OA nanosorbent. The collected batch equilibrium results confirmed the efficiency of newly functionalized NBent-NPA-OA nanosorbent to uptake the divalent ionic Zn/Co from their solutions (10.0mL of 0.01mol/L) with maximum capacity values 2.916 and 1.960mmolg -1 , respectively using 5.0mg nanosorbent, pH 6.0 and 20min contact reaction time. The multistage microcolumn system was successfully implemented to remove the divalent ionic Zn/Co from tap water in addition to their radioisotopes 65 Zn/ 60 Co from radioactive wastewater. Scintillation crystals are usually used for detection of energetic photons at room temperature in high energy and nuclear physics research, non-destructive analysis of materials testing, safeguards, nuclear treaty verification, geological exploration, and medical imaging. Therefore, new designs and construction of radioactive beam facilities are coming on-line with these science brunches. A good number of researchers are investigating the efficiency of the γ-ray detectors to improve the models and techniques used in order to deal with the most pressing problems in physics research today. In the present work, a new integrative and uncomplicated numerical simulation method (NSM) is used to compute the full-energy (photo) peak efficiency of a regular hexagonal prism NaI(Tl) gamma-ray detector using radioactive point sources situated non-axial within its front surface boundaries. This simulation method is based on the efficiency transfer method. Most of the mathematical formulas in this work are derived analytically and solved numerically. The main core of the NSM is the calculation of the effective solid angle for radioactive point sources, which are situated non-axially at different distances from the front surface of the detector. The attenuation of the γ-rays through the detector's material and any other materials in-between the source and the detector is taken into account. A remarkable agreement between the experimental and calculated by present formalism results has been observed.

Gamma-ray detectors are widely used in many fields like environmental measurements, medicine, space science, and industry, where the detector geometrical, total, photopeak efficiencies and peak-to-total ratio could be required. The calculation of the detector efficiency depends mainly on the value of the geometrical efficiency, which depends on the solid angle subtended by the source-detector system. The present work introduces a direct analytical method to calculate the geometrical and total efficiencies of CdZnTe gamma-ray detector using off-axis isotropic radiating γ-ray [point, disk, and cylindrical] sources. To test the validity of the present work, the results are compared with some published data and also to prove how much it is important to determine the efficiency of difficult gamma-ray detection arrangement.

Hypertrophic burn scars pose a challenge for burn survivors and providers. In many cases, they can severely limit a burn survivor's level of function, including work and recreational activities. A widespread modality of prevention and treatment of hypertrophic scarring is the utilization of pressure garment therapy (PGT). Despite the magnitude of the problem of hypertrophic scarring and the ubiquitous use of pressure garments as therapy, strong clinical evidence of the efficacy of PGT in the literature is lacking. Some of the challenges facing measurement of efficacy of PGT on hypertrophic scarring are lack of clear definitions for degree of hypertrophic scarring, inability to quantify pressure applied to scars, patient noncompliance to strict PGT time schedules, and inability to conduct randomized controlled trials comparing PGT to no therapy for ethical reasons since PGT is considered a standard of care. In this review, we attempt to summarize and analyze evidence-based literature on PGT and its efficacy in burn hypertrophic scars published in English language in the past 15 years.

This work provides an empirical formula to calculate the FEPE for different detectors using the effective solid angle ratio derived from experimental measurements. The full energy peak efficiency (FEPE) curves of the (2″(*)2″) NaI(Tl) detector at different seven axial distances from the detector were depicted in a wide energy range from 59.53 to 1408keV using standard point sources. The distinction was based on the effects of the source energy and the source-to-detector distance. A good agreement was noticed between the measured and calculated efficiency values for the source-to-detector distances at 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50cm., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. A new theoretical approach was used to calibrate and calculate the full-energy peak efficiency of the NaI (Tl) detectors based on the direct statistical method proposed by Selim and Abbas for cylindrical detectors. In addition, the self-attenuation of the source matrix, the attenuation by the source container and the detector housing materials were considered in the mathematical treatment. Results were compared with those measured by a cylindrical NaI (Tl) detector with resolution (FWHM) at 662 keV equal to 7.5 %. (152)Eu aqueous radioactive spherical sources covering the energy range from 121 to 1408 keV were used. In comparison, the calculated and the measured full-energy peak efficiency values were in good agreement.

To calibrate the co-axial HPGe semiconductor detectors, we introduce a new theoretical approach based on the Direct Statistical method proposed by Selim and Abbas (1995, 1996) to calculate the full-energy peak efficiency for cylindrical detectors. This paper is a comprehensive review of hand burn injuries. The different classifications of thermal burns, out- and inpatient care, indications for escharotomies as well as surgical management, skin substitutes, and paediatric hand burns are thoroughly reviewed.

The concentration of 10 elements has been determined in fingernail and hair of four groups representing normal and hepatosplenic (bilharzial) subjects. Samples were collected from rural inhabitants to the east of Alexandria City and irradiated with thermal neutrons from a Triga Mark III Reactor, for 10 minutes. Measurements were made using HPGe detector, ADC and PDP 11/34. The analysis were performed using the RAYGUNprogram. The results showed an increase in the concentration of Al, Cl and I in both fingernail and hair of bilharzial patients than normal while Mg, Ca, K, Mn, Cu, and Sr decreased. Most of the elements showed a higher concentration in fingernail than in hair.

The effect of neutron doses from a D-T compact neutron generator on the liver cells of adult male and female albino Swiss mice was investigated. Fast neutrons (14.5 MeV) were delivered to the whole body in a single dose or in two, four, six or eight equal doses separated by 3-day intervals. The lowest dose, 100 rem, was given for an exposure time of 6 hours and was then steadily raised to 912 rem for an exposure time of 48 hours. During exposure the neutron flux was controlled by the activation foil technique. Animals were killed for testing after each irradiation. Histological examination of the hepatocytes in the light microscope showed marked degenerative changes only after the longer irradiation periods (24, 36 and 48 h). Electron microscopy showed cytological (cytoplasmic and nuclear) changes in the hepatocytes after only 12 hours' irradiation. Densitometric scans of electron micrographs of control and 12 h-irradiated livers indicated that the control hepatocyte interphase nucleus contains approximately 72% heterochromatin, while the irradiated nucleus contains only 64% heterochromatin.
